"Mesquite police chief David gill called the officer's death a senseless act of violence saying he had been on the job for over two decades That's the latest I'm Julie Ryan This is Bloomberg intelligence with Alex Steele and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg radio When you look across global Wall Street one of the areas that has just seen continued growth in assets under management is private equity as investors look for returns in an extraordinarily low yield environment It's got an outlook for private equity for 2022 We can do that with Paul Goldberg Bloomberg intelligence senior banks analyst So Paul I just see it all the cash that these big funds are raising Billions and billions of dollars What are they going to do with it all Hopefully they go in they invest this fall It doesn't well for returns That's the risk There is some risk for returns and the companies the private equity managers do acknowledge it When their projection of returns are slightly smaller but if you think of it as a bigger picture there global they invest over different sectors It's not just private equity And the way they invest now is very different It's thematics So they go after things like life sciences So warehouse and they go after the growth areas rather than just trying to find deals So okay to that point though I feel like whenever I talk to anyone from the different shops they're all telling me relatively the same thing Life sciences energy transition ESG stuff how do they distinguish themselves in this pool I think that distinguished by the different asset classes that they're invest So for example if somebody like Blackstone they are very broad based But somebody like there is on the other hand they're very specifically involved in direct lambda Somebody who is like an Apollo take off their smaller margin products and go after the insurance assets So they really each one of them has somewhat of a niche even though the overall overall overlap For the big fees that they charge I wonder if the adjusted returns are there particularly since we've had such strong markets over the last several years which really suggested maybe these valuations are paying or going to result in subpar returns How have the returns been for this sector Tariffs have been very strong They dropped obviously in the first quarter of last year when the markets pulled back and revaluations happened But ever since they've been very strong they've been doing double digits in many cases 20 plus percent returns So in different compared to the overall S&P 500 which has been rallying Talk to him about their investments and alternative assets and sort of how each shop distinguishes that Well in many cases the big areas where they grow in this credit So that direct lending any kind of variations of credit where they can see where they can take the public credit to turn it into a private investment and they can earn a 150 to 200 basis points of extra yield on that Just because of lack of liquidity So that's one big area The other big areas are obviously infrastructure and that's where some of the ESG comes in and anything in real assets And then they all have gone after retail including some of the more recent announcements that you've seen like Apollo making a deal just in the recent days on the more retail distributions So one of the questions I have is who's investing in these private equity firms these days Is it still the traditional pension funds and things like that Or are we seeing some new type investors coming in I would say 85 to 90% still did very traditional investors The insurance companies again in a lot more interested and they actually partner in or the private equity manager is actually buying their assets to manage them But private equity managers are really gearing after retail there Credited investors they also build a lot of retail products So today it could be anywhere between 5 or 10% in terms of the inflows They see there's been a third of their influenza eventually Maybe within three to 5 years Wow Yeah That's a lot I wonder the big pie of that because did they just think that everyone's going to become a retail investor Or is it going to be super competitive which then leads to the question of fees et cetera I would probably assume that those still out of a credit to investors out there who are not involved in the market So that's number one Number two they coming up with a lot of different products that the traditional investor can access So you don't need to be in a credit investor And these products will typically be more marginal fee Products that can accommodate the traditional investor Hey Paul just real quickly here We see the deals when they get announced on a merger Monday How about the sales How have the unwinding in the monetizations of these investments gone over the last several years There have been very good probably over the last 12 months 15 months So Jonathan grey president of Blackstone said it's a good time to sell And try to elaborate demand is great and M and a environment So it's been really strong It's built out Not just that not only the realization is what happened The carry the interest and the fees that these guys open and carry the interest multiply several times since the bottom of the innate It is it has been and I think we'll continue to be a good time to be in the private equity business those guys always seem to do well Bloomberg intelligence senior banks analyst Paul Goldberg thanks so much Now from PE to ESG joining us now shaheen contractor Bloomberg intelligence ESG analysts ESG's were super hot the ETFs super hot Are they still super hot as we wind up the year here So that's a great question So definitely we've seen ESG assets continue to grow specifically for ETFs we've seen them reach about 360 billion in third quarter And that's about a 55% increase from last year The one challenge though that we see is that the whole base for these ETFs are very concentrated which could lead to some problems for sustainable long-term growth But still growing for now Where is this money coming from Who's investing in these ETFs It's a great question It's largely institutional investors right now So ESG continues to be a way to extract these large pension funds these large institutions to these kinds of PTS And I think we see it more in the institution rather than the advice or the retail side What will eventually change that I think it's maybe better definitions of ESG better understanding of what goes into the funds and what these funds offer Right now it's very opaque Nobody really understands what any sign is when they say they're in ESG fund Just amazed at the growth of the ESG business because I'm just not sure what's in it what makes a company ESG compliant Who tells me if a company I'm investing in is ESG compliant Is it not the SEC It's not the CFTC How should I think about that It's a good question I think that's one of the main challenges we have right now A lot of the ESG data the analysis that goes into it is from voting provider from rating agencies from publicly disclosed sources of information And the one thing I continue to be amazed by is sort of the dread of ESG strategies within more and more sort of what I call diversification We've gone from sort of ESG to thematic ones like climate change to even more niche ones like climate transition And all these words mean very different things to many different people So I completely agree with the challenge Which is why I feel like it's good.

But nobody TI OPI Traffic center and the longstanding crash remains in college park on the outer loop between Route one in 95 along the left side of the roadway, and I believe that was caused by some flooding. And now listen. We found a crash on 95 south bound leave. It's going to be close from 1 98 along the left side of the roadway. And also on the inner loop of the Beltway Afterward, 50 believe we have one stuffed in the roadway, which was causing those delays. But that started to recede. Now we still have quite a bit of traffic passing through a two headed toward to 14. Now, listen says to 14 westbound at bright Seat road. It's flooding and you have to turn on the bright side road. If you're in the westbound direction of Central Avenue coming inbound from the Beltway headed toward the district, eastbound traffic is getting by, but Route. 50 is not getting by traffic closed in both directions because of flooding there. and gamble maker of aligned probiotic a daily supplement to support digestive health containing a probiotic strain developed by Gastroenterol just with twenty years of research Morris align probiotics dot com this is morning edition from NPR news I'm David Grange NO well king good morning in Saint Louis a lawsuit has revealed divisions among officials over race policing and the court system in that suit the city's top prosecutor is alleging that there's a racist conspiracy against her NPR's label Fadhel brought us the story and a quick note there is some offensive language here St Louis circuit prosecutor Kym Gardner won by a landslide in two thousand sixteen she promised to work toward ending mass incarceration and to treat crime as a public health crisis well more than three years into her term every time she tries to change things she says she's blocked the powerful few is stopping reforms that we know can make our city safe we know can address the racial disparities in the lack of trust with the crime of justice system she's accusing among others the police union the city and the special prosecutor of a conspiracy to deny the civil rights of racial minorities by trying to house the first black prosecutor elected in Saint Louis what was one of the last roles was Lamar Johnson Johnson the black man who was convicted of murder twenty five years later gardeners office says they found overwhelming evidence that he's innocent that is a tactic made up witness statements the prosecutors paid the sole witness who has since recanted a gardener can't get a new trial the Attorney General argues it would violate state law so the legal battle is headed to the state Supreme Court when the price he says that there's that manifest injustice and we filed a motion for new trial most jurisdictions even in the state of Missouri would work together to find some mechanism to correct that wrongful conviction but the city named in the lawsuit says there's no collusion taus Gardner mayor Lyda christen like Gardner is a Democrat she says she wants her to succeed we know I know the history of race in this city in this country and we all have to work against that but they're just has not been a conspiracy race has a long and difficult history and leasing and prosecution here black drivers are ninety one percent more likely to be stopped by police in Missouri and white drivers like people are over represented in the prison population under represented on police forces the city has had to pay out nearly three million dollars as a result of racial discrimination lawsuits since two thousand fourteen the head of the Saint Louis police officers association Jeff Florida is named in Gardner suit as a co conspirator I think that the whole thing was a grand distraction and was the last active the desperate woman he says can gardeners worried about an investigation it's getting closer to her door when Gardner took office you charge the Republican governor air Crichton's over allegations of sexual misconduct and blackmail he was dismissed in a deal that included his resignation but now gardeners in the hot seat the investigator she chose to look into the case has been indicted on charges of perjury and tampering with evidence gardeners office was raided and she's being deposed again Aurora there's been a lot of ballyhoo about the fact that the Kim is the first African American female prosecutors Saint Louis but I mean we're not critical of her because she's the first one critical of her because she's the worst the worst worst says because he views her criminal justice reforms as amnesty and he blames her for higher homicide rates what roda is a controversial figure himself he has said Gardner needs to be removed from office by force or by choice many accusing him of inviting violence against her on the fifth anniversary of Michael brown's death that's the black unarmed teen whose killing led to the Ferguson protests Rhoda posted online happy alive day Darren for the white officer who shot brown there is a culture of discrimination racism in other biases in our police department that's sergeant heather Taylor the president of the ethical society of police and she says order is part of that culture our organization represents mostly black officers and was founded in the seventies to combat discrimination she says they don't agree with everything Gardner does but her members are disappointed in the city's response to the suit to say that some there is no merit in her talking about racism he is being targeted by the site was police officers association is that that's a that's a slap in the face when they know they know that we were established because of racial discrimination Taylor says there's no question there's racism with the loss it will have to prove conspiracy the same investigation that critics point to as an example of gardeners failures is at the center of gardens case her lawsuit alleges the investigation is a colluded effort to unseat her despite her mandate from voters if you call the appointment of a special prosecutor to dig into the handling of the former governors case unprecedented and calls the prosecutor ethically compromise it also cleans the entire investigation is a mechanism to quote for it and impede her efforts to establish equal treatment under law black progressive female prosecutors backed chair in the Saint Louis rally women have themselves been described as controversial like Marilyn Mosby the state's attorney for Baltimore we've lived through the personal professional ethical attacks on our company and our leadership abilities and are in many cases still living through these attacks and yet we are here to tell Kim and everyone else we shall not only over we shop from we shall prevail and performing the after the rally most we got a voicemail she posted online she wrote this is why I stand with Kim one one thing worse than a bad in power woman back in power black woman who's got public weighing in her hands if we'd known you all we're going to be this much trouble we would pick their own it's so when it comes to what's happening in Saint Louis what we're saying is searching people aiming to double down on aiming to maintain power and control that's our son ray at the Brookings Institution his research focuses on racial and social inequality and its intersection with gender as of twenty fifteen just one percent of prosecutors in the United States for minority women in three in five states have no black elected prosecutors backing garner's office the prosecutors being debriefed on possible candidates for her court diversion program she she had known prior to this okay no mention reviews police for forces a suspect is part of her push for rehabilitation rather than incarceration and which she says is an example of with angering her opponents the people told me they elected me to fight they told me they wanted me to reform the system they wanted me to dress the trauma in the root causes of addressing the crowd just system as a public health crisis she says that's what she was elected to do Lana falls in this this is NPR news planning for the end of the world as we know it can be expensive a new venture aims to make communal underground bunkers more affordable the common man's survival shelters well is that a whole bottle of middle class the.

"And from Sony pictures classics with made in a new film about the journey of the first ever all female sailing crew competing in the Whitbread round the world race and overcoming obstacles when many said they couldn't achieve their dream now playing from K. Bucks down in support of the David gill Qian's W. let him on a memorial fund established to strengthen NPR's commitment to training and protecting journalists in high risk environments and from the sustaining members of this NPR station it's morning edition from NPR news I'm no well king and I'm Rachel Martin negotiations over brexit could be further complicated by the new British prime minister Boris Johnson one of the biggest sticking point is how to handle the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as part of the European Union this border has been effectively erased if brexit actually happens the border will likely come back Johnson's predecessor Theresa may negotiated this agreement with European leaders for so called back stop that would have avoided a physical border with check points between the two jurisdictions but the idea never got parliamentary approval and Boris Johnson now has other plans the values its independence and indeed it self respect could agree to a treaty which song the way our economic independence and self government as this storm so how's that sitting with Ireland's leaders joining us now is Daniel mole hall he's the Irish ambassador to the U. S. thanks so much for being with us good morning to you good to be here I'm gonna ask you to do a bit of work for us when we consider this border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland there are so many political security diplomatic sensitivities can you attempt to explain to an American audience why this is so complicated one of the moments the border between now and the two parts of Ireland is like the border between New York New Jersey to see miss border people move back and forth goods and services move back and forth because we're both members of the European Union when the United Kingdom leaves the European Union means of Northern Ireland would also leave and therefore if they were to leave the customs union and the single markers northern out it will be in the different regulatory and customs environment for the rest five from the rest of Ireland and that would create problems for the flow of goods across that border because our will be a member the single market and northern on would not be so we're not talking here about the movement of people nobody is a difficulty about that was there was told free movement of people between Britain out of that was going to come what may it's all about customs about what happens in on an island where you have two different customs and regular three jurisdictions how is that managed and the way to manage it as far as we're concerned as to how the closest possible agreement between the UK and the European Union which will allow for the free flow of trade and that's the outcome we hold for but that doesn't happen we need an insurance policy that come what may there will be no border on the island of Ireland and that's what what date is contained in the with strong agreement which is currently a matter of contention in Britain between different groups who take different views and the fact is that it has been possible to get it through parliament so far and now we have a new British prime minister we must wait and see what happens when the new prime minister gauges with the European Union what is your suspicion about book how Boris Johnson is going to approach this problem well that's a matter really far for prime minister Johnson who might know from our time together in Brussels in the early nineteen nineties I wish you well in fact everyone in our room which is in well we want to see a successful break we want to see Britain leave the European Union in an orderly fashion to that minimizes the economic damage to Britain to European Union and two hours and particularly that avoids any damage to our peace process on the on the bottom because the border and on the course is not just an economic border it's also a border which is surrounded by political sensitivities and that's why it's politically so important for the peace process that we avoid disrupting that profits by hardening dot board in any way and everyone has the same view by the way the U. K. Ireland and the European Union nobody wants to be a hard border the on the run and the problem is how do you make that happen in a situation where Britain leaves the customs union and leave single market that's the puzzle that privacy Johnson and the European Commission leaders have to resolve I'm hopeful that that will that they will find a solution but it's really a matter for for the U. K. and for the bridge by me this you determine how he wants to proceed Daniel Mulhall Ireland's ambassador to the United States thank you for your time you're very welcome president trump's statements and actions have put race at the center of the twenty twenty campaign some Democrats want to focus on health care or economic inequality but older civil rights activists a major force in the Democratic Party want a candidate who will confront trump on race NPR political correspondent awesome how it has the story Linda long lives in Alabama and she's seen a lot in her seventy years but she says she's never seen a president incite racial fears like president trump never seen it this bad I mean I've never seen anyone else in the place of authority and in that I'm going to say in the White House that seems to create animosities among people rather than trying to unite people I met long in Detroit this week at the annual and double ACP conference she told me it feels like the country is sliding backwards I think we're in the reconstruction reconstruction like what happened after the civil war let's keep body and an eighty two year old from New Jersey I met him as he ate breakfast while waiting to hear from a slate of presidential candidates he's impressed with some of them but he's also disappointed they have not used stronger language to confront president trump change comes down no one at this point have come forward to say I'm running against slime ball Reverend al Sharpton told me he also wants to hear the candidates be more explicit I have not heard them aggressively come all and say one day he's using race to these races and three this is what I will do Sharpton says trump will try to mobilize voters based on racial fear and if Democrats want to win they cannot shy away from a conversation on race just because it's uncomfortable this week the and double ACP unanimously voted to support the impeachment of president trump Arthur Fleming from Dallas is one of those and double ACP members Fleming says Democrats need to realize we are not living in normal times and if they do that they could unite the country now United crashed on me that all the races that support him is gonna turn not races uniting the country sounds kind of basic but it was probably one of the most common things I heard among these activists they want a president who sees them as full Americans and they don't feel they have that right now but for Fleming dealing with racism in this country is not just a moral obligation racism to their security issues and national security issue he says look at the ads Russia put on social media in the twenty sixteen election that blacks bang that African American men so let's send it to as you that they know where the baddie former vice president Joe Biden told a largely African American crap at the national urban league conference in Indianapolis yesterday that we are in a battle for the soul of the nation it's the main theme of his campaign and a message that resonates with some of these activists along with criminal justice reform and housing mark morale leads the national urban league is not the racial conversation around issues alone it's the movement of America becoming a much more racially diverse country and America becoming a nation that doesn't have a dominant black population by numbers racial group even though these changes may be politically challenging Morial sees a big upside is is democratic candidates are engaging black voters more than they ever have before a small college NPR news Indianapolis this is NPR news on the next fresh air who is the greatest yeah all right all right we'll hear from three members of the band ranking tanking they perform contemporary versions of songs from the Gullah "So DIGI are Crossley racing which is difficult ones race team they compete in the cannon pro series they compete in the arc racing series. And of course, the truck series. Well, they were an architect recently at new spirit, and they have now been issued a l six penalty coming out that test Kerry. L six that's intense. That is so the absence. What happened to initiate this before I go into what they are penalized. With now is they? Apparently at this architect, they brought their an N car. Which is I run at new Smyrna? So you're to test it new Smyrna for Arca. They'd rather can't in-car which does compete at news fear now. Which is a problem. Right. Sure. Apparently what I'm hearing. It took an architecture with the Canaan motor in it, which is basically our car in the canon car. The same thing other than Motors, basically for the most part not much different. So they tried to get away with it either. They tried to or it was on his mistake. I'm not sure, but they're going to be fighting this. They're they're definitely going to try to get this overruled. But so what the penalty is an essence is the whole team will not be able to compete for three races to start the year off, which includes clean in the counties. David Gill and will not be able to feel any cars of any kind for three races. Tiger gives the driver of this thing that this test session who probably had no idea what was going on is now also banned for three days. Wow. And the crew chief Chad Walter is also banned for three races all three the car owner driver and crew chief all be docked five thousand dollars as well. Which pretty big for a you know, a local regional racing series. And then on top of that driver and owner who's one hundred points for the season. So you're missing three races. All ready on top of that you start at negative one hundred points. Why even bother right? So I think NASCAR is made it very clear that there's no testing policy is not to be messed with. And I think think that should definitely send some shockwaves around. No, kidding hope. Jimmy's. Okay. You know tests. Did you hear that? He did a swap with Formula one guy. What we haven't heard on the show like seventy five times. Do we have audio of that? All right up next. We've got driver spotlight, which means is not Jimmy. It's Kyle Larson here on L W, David take it away. I'm David Gill..
