"No longer broadcasting from the hand Kate the earth will be broadcasting live and I'm told it sounds it sounds a little bit better so thank you but good lord is it hot in here so I am may or may not post pictures I'm again I'm shamed by the amazing studios of Michael and Brian but I am working on it when welcoming into the program his name is David Erin off he is a director of the division of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt at school of medicine David how are you a doctor how are you Sir I'm doing very well then thanks for having me on well listen I know you guys are very busy over there at Vanderbilt and I know that there's a lot of things to talk about it let's just go down a couple of very basic questions then we'll get into some of the more complicated stuff how crazy is it right now over their dander bill well we're prepared for something like this and we do the best we can to gear up for something like an epidemic or now a pandemic so we're doing what we can to meet the needs of our community and obviously as you know from the news there's a lot more activity going on right now with this corona virus and it definitely has us on our toes so you said that you ready for an epidemic but now this is now a pandemic and have you seen an increase in patients coming in with corona virus what have you seen differently there on the ground yeah so we're definitely seeing a lot more activity at our diagnostic centers around the region and our hotline that we man for taking calls from patients and employees who are concerned that they may have a corona virus we know from the state department of health that Tennessee is seeing a pretty dramatic uptick in cases and we're seeing a lot of that because our diagnostic capacity is coming online so for sure we're seeing at all of our touch points with the public clinical and through the internet and through phone more contact being made with concern about corona virus it is interesting too because I was talking about this in the opening segment where I mean yeah it's terrible that more people are being you know he was a corona virus being diagnosed with a confirmation of the corona virus the good news is that that means that these test kits are getting out there and it also means that you know we know who's guided and who doesn't and so when you say that there's been an uptick what is the age range if you can say of people who are getting it I I someone reported it's mostly millennials yeah I mean a lot of what were what are the data I know right now are mostly national data that the CDC is releasing and for sure we're seeing cases in all age ranges what we're seeing across the age ranges is that the severity of the infection tends to be worse in older adults so as we get about sixty seventy eighty years old that's where the severity and even the least validate the infection is most a concern yeah and I guess obviously that is a very big concern let's say you go down to basics now because I'm I'm getting hit on my social media with people asking various questions David Aronoff joining us director of the division of infectious disease at Vanderbilt school of medicine so the basics as far as corona virus goes wash your hands yeah we're gonna do all this social distancing and some of these other things that a lot of people are doing what other things can people do to ensure that they don't get the coronavirus yeah I mean you mentioned some really important points this is a pretty contagious virus that is shed through the respiratory system so coughing is certainly a good way to spread it and sneezing but even talking to people can release little droplets so that's why we tend to say stay six feet away from people near you and tried to not be in large or even small gatherings particularly with strangers see who'd you don't live with good hand hygiene is really important because we know this virus can survive on our finger tips it can survive on even our countertops for a few days and so those are some of the important things up apart from just simple basics if you have a cough obviously not to go out in public but cough into the corner of your elbow not into your hand and if you do happen to sneeze or cough into your hand wash your hands those kind of basics did you know I know this is been of some debate and I know that everybody's got a different answer but how long has this been here do you think well that's a really good question we think this virus is new to keep all sent probably originated in bats and we really think that it emerged in China in late December and we all know that that really became a large outbreak and spread to South Korea and and Italy and is now all over the world but it's a it's a it's a real testimonial to just how quickly this virus can spread that were now facing it all over the United States within just a matter of months despite really rigorous aggressive public health met measures all over the world to try to slow the spread things I find fascinating about this whole thing and in M. and ask you the question because some folks have different answers from others and live course I'm a layman clearly but we're taking all of these precautions and you'll have some people that say well this is just like the flu in one of the things that I say and I have been saying is yes it is just like the flu with the exception that people are walking around contagious for two weeks and don't even know it and so you know two weeks ago I may have infected someone and then that person is infecting a whole bunch of other folks and so it goes is that the big difference between corona virus and it realizing there's a bunch of other types of flu out there but is that the big difference between corona virus in a typical flow I think you've hit the nail on the head on a really big difference is that ability to spread it without being sick which is a big difference the other is that this seems to be more severe in terms of causing death and so you know people have said numbers like ten times more lethal or twenty or thirty but it is certainly more dangerous of a virus right now and I think in part that's because we as humans have never seen this virus before the flu changes year over year we get a new vaccine year over year but it's not new to humans and we have some immunity to it and it doesn't do things that were not anticipating but this is a this is a different ball game and we're learning a lot as we go but I I think those two things that it can spread without symptoms for a pretty long period of time before people develop symptoms and it's really quite dangerous particularly in older adults are people who have immuno suppression reduced immune systems I think that's really key have you seen a family friend phrases correctly so if you were in a state let's say went to a concert let's say that I went to a concert last night would I be seeing symptoms immediately or within two weeks I understand that it can show up within two weeks but the further out I get from that concert is at the close of the the further I get from you know all of that possible spreading and then I quarantine myself the further you get from that that concert the last likely it is that you're going to come down with a crowd of virus or are you just as susceptible the morning after and you know how we can six days after are you you've read it totally correctly that the longer you go without developing symptoms the less likely it is that you'll get symptoms or get sick on average it's about four or five days after exposure most people once they get infected it'll be about four or five days before they start to get symptoms it can happen a little sooner and can even happen is latest two weeks or even later than that but every day that goes by where you're not getting symptoms is reassuring I know that you talked about the big ten times the very least vality between corona virus and the flu regarding you know older folks right in and everybody knows that it makes all the sense in the world but I want to talk about that then this may be an unfair question I wanna talk about this so that that ten percent lift ality rate we don't know how many people actually have the corona virus so the more people you just said a moment ago that we're seeing the numbers go up substantially because more people are being tested and we're finding that more people have the corona virus but the more people that are tested in the more people are confirmed to have it are you seeing that ten percent did that ten percent rate is it going up along with the number of cases or is that percentage rate gonna go down because we now have more people confirmed to have it but less people are dying yeah really good point and I'm these numbers are subject to move for lots of reasons were probably going to have new drugs available that will help and will learn how to take better care of people that have infection what we know so far is that when people of all the people in the world who have had a positive test and R. have symptoms about two to three out of every one hundred of those people are dying from the infection and not two or three percent is on evenly distributed over age so young people critically below twenty years of age tends not to die from this infection their rates are very low in patients who are above the age of sixty or seventy have higher rates and there may be five or ten percent as you as you mentioned but you said something really important which is that we don't really know how many people have been infected and gotten no symptoms at all and that could be a pretty large number and really what we're going to need for that is not the kind of testing we're doing right now where we look for the virus in a person with symptoms but is really an antibody test where we can come through later after this infectious disease epidemic or pandemic is over and checked people's blood to see if there if they were exposed and and ask them questions do you remember being sick and and then we'll get a better feeling for the population of people who really did get infected and had no idea and then we'll get a better understanding of just what percentage of people who were infected died and that'll certainly be lower than two or three percent but hello we don't really know right now what is the problem to a doctor is it's allergy season and so every year my listeners know this every year I go through allergy season and it just kills me and so if I'm out at you know say you know what the best by buying a microphone and I sneeze then all of a sudden people are scattering because they I think that I've got the corona virus when I just got allergies I then I thought I would use my entire life I know what it feels like bye try convincing other people of that and so that you you know hear your spot on there now question people bring up sars people bring up the H. one N. one and now we have the corona virus what's the big difference between these well sars which came out in two thousand two also from hi Hey Ryan a reason in China and spread that is Rick closely related to this corona virus in fact they have now both been renamed it the first one is called sars coronavirus number one and this one is called sars coronavirus number two they're really related viruses they both came from bats that first one though was a little different in that it tended to cause pneumonia in other words a lower deeper respire twenty tract infection not an upper restored respire twenty tract infection so runny nose sore throat would be less common and shedding seems to be really tightly coupled to symptoms so it wasn't that hard so to speak to control that epidemic because as soon as someone got symptoms you could isolate them and use protective equipment and prevent spread this corona virus C. as we've discussed causes is shared through the nose and throat and can be shared with outside M. terms and people can go several days without symptoms they can get a very mild disease that is not an ammonia so clinically they're very different even though they are highly related viruses both of those stars that first sars and now this covert nineteen illness really distantly related to the flu they're very very different viruses and the flu has really been in human populations for a really really long time all right let me ask about the bats and I don't know if this is an unfair question but if the folks over there in China know that you know these viruses come from bats is there anything they can do to stop this.

"Do this on the every Johnny if you could call that guy that I just gave you his phone number if you could call him and tell him yes we are on for three thirty five that would be appreciated coming up here in the next ten minutes can you are welcomed into the Phil Valentine show Gavin about David Erin off and he is director of the division of infectious diseases over there the Vanderbilt school of medicine so I have all kinds of questions to ask him that is a coming up here three thirty five on super talk ninety nine seven W. T. N. so as far as the task force press conference earlier today I want to just sort of give you the a cliff notes because there is a lot there and one of the things though that I thought was really interesting was when the president was asked this question do you see any repercussions on China yeah now here is that the reason why that is such an important question it is clear that the president knows that this thing like like we all know that this thing came from China and they didn't tell us right away in the matter of fact yeah I don't still don't believe that they've told us everything you know trying his out there saying oh yeah that this this coronavirus it's in our past now we're well on our way to recovery how do we know I don't trust China's first you can throw them so the president says yeah you know what I'm not gonna comment on that that's what the president said I'm not gonna comment on that that tells me that the president is thinking very seriously about doing something regarding China and I don't know what that is I don't know if it's sanctions but I'll tell you what he is most certainly not happy that China has been out there blaming America saying that it was us that started this whole corona virus and you know one of the things that I've I find interesting is the fact that you have the Chinese and they're saying that yeah this whole thing came from United States and you know what they they have the sort of a military event big games in our military went out there and they have the corona virus and they spread it you know the story if you've been listening last couple of days to meet and so that's what China's been accusing you wanna talk about appropriate bed fellows you know we we sometimes talk about strange bedfellows you want to talk about appropriate bedfellows you've got China you've got Russia and you've got Iran to three of them are out there trying to push forward this narrative and so now the president is not tipping his hand now one of the things that I find interesting and and I'm I'm going to put on my tinfoil hat for just a second just a second because I don't believe that the Chinese said did this intentionally dot let me ask you a question think about the trade wars the trade wars that we've just had with China why is it that we were able to pummel China in the most recent trade war it's because of the strength of our economy so wouldn't make sense for China to do something to try and destroy our economy think about that would it make sense and again I've got my tinfoil hat on I'm just throwing this out there wouldn't make sense for the Chinese to try to do something to destroy our economy because that's how we've been able to do not destroy their economy to get the upper hand in trade well the answer to that question is yes now the president was asked directly do you think that Chinese did this purposely in the president's smartly said no I I I don't think that they try to do this purposely that's the president's opinion and I believe the president but you know I like to throw things out there because one I I find them interesting because you know I I started speaking a little bit too you know some friends and we started talking about this I get a group text and we started talking about this and we started going down the rabbit holes of all of the craziest theories that you could possibly think of as to where the corona virus started and why so that was one of the things that you know I I throughout but see what they don't understand is that our economy he's been built one on obviously capitalism but but over the last you know three years since president trump came on board is deregulation and tax reform and creating the environment for jobs and success in hiring and raises and bonuses and all the things that the president has been able to do in the past three years you can't say that about China's economy and so here we are but we've been through what we've been through and I I we're going through hell at some point I'm going to be able to say we're all going to be able to say we've been through hell and back but we're not there yet but hopefully soon we will be able to say that we've been through hell and back and the president and said something to the effect of this he was asked you know how long before Americans can get back to their lives how long until we can all get back to normal and the president said you know very soon I hope but it's almost an unfair question but what I can tell you is that I am a lot more comfortable with president trump doing everything that he's doing verses if we would've had Hillary Clinton at the helm or if you would have had you know or could have somebody like Joe Biden it's three thirty on super talk ninety nine seven W. ten are coming up next I am going to speak to that virologists today he is director of the division of infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt school of medicine given the name of David "I couldn't agree more. It actually makes you like so like relatable and strong. That's why Bethany drives me nuts because I don't think she's good at taking accountability. Better in the last couple of see signs that I agree with. But I do often think she's put in positions to take down ability for things like there's no accountability that needs to be taken like saying that she didn't think Arinda enough for the nutcracker is just going to say like she couldn't thank during a more for the nutcracker. Would. Are you kidding me? First of all did you see her? She was literally crying like screaming at the top of her lungs. Yes. And apparently what they sent him on like during the didn't even get it for me. Like, I she gave me her guy. And then like, I went back and forth. I paid for it. Like it was him. And I on whereas like he just a gave her the contact. Oh, she's like, here's a guy. Call right, but still and lease and she was very appreciative in the berkshires or wherever they did it like, I'm sorry. She they put her in these positions. They hold her to a higher standard. That's true. I'm also just like a Bethany. Just and I owned that like I would venture to the death. I love her so much. Did you always love Lisa before the season? No. I've always known that Leeson anti-trump was the way that she was. Yep. Me too. If you can't be my friend, and please don't be my enemy like she was manipulating back Taylor Armstrong. I know it's I've known from the very beginning team. But there's yes, that's where it started to unravel. Oh, my weight and forget on this season. How fucking Vander pump started. She had brandy engine shoot. Which Brady was her rider died like a really good friend friends with kenan's like you're gonna put her in that position. Oh with the lady who broke up your family. Unreal. Unreal. Okay. Speaking of unreal. I don't know. That's my right from people magazine, David foster jokes that he'd be in jail right now if his daughter had wanted to go to college, basically of David Erin, foster put up a screen shot of a tech such from her dead on Ceram.
