"The horrific school shooting shootings in Texas. And the usual responses, but they're even more virulent than ever. Immediately, it's gun laws. I'd like to know what gun laws. Well, one, which is worth debating. Is should you be able to get a gun at 18 or only a 21? It would have zero impact on gang violence. And what you just saw now is extremely rare. It's emotionally understandable to have reactions. To one event, there are, this is not the only school shooting, obviously, although I did read to you, and it is not insignificant. The school shootings have taken place in Europe in the last 25 years. And as I pointed out, you have to compare America to all of Europe 300 million to 300 million. It can't compare America to Germany or at the France or Hungary or whatever. You got to have to compare it to all of Europe. And it is true if there were no guns in the United States, there would be no gun violence. There would be violence, but there wouldn't be gun violence. But since you can't get rid of all the guns, you have to deal with the reality as it exists. That's redundant. You have to deal with the reality. Reality does exist. And I'd like to know what we should do. My view is more fathers would be more helpful than more gun laws. My view is that more religion and God in kids lives. Would be more effective than more gun laws. How many people in general? How many murderers went to church regularly? Prior to their committing murder. I don't mean a family killing. The family family murder is universal. It is tragic. It is, but it's a different subject. But how many people? How many murderers went to church that week? It is not even considered because we're really not talking about guns. It's an important thing for people to understand the passion on both sides is not about guns as guns. They represent something more to both sides. And one big big aspect, if not the biggest. Is, should the state be the only entity that has guns? For the left, the answer is yes, for the right the answer is no. That's really underneath it all. That is really the subject. The left believes in essentially unlimited power of the state, including to shut you up. The use of the Department of Justice now to jail the centers what has been done to people who went into. Congress on January 6th, people still in solitary confinement beaten and imprisoned, whereas nothing analogous happened to almost anyone in the incredibly violent riots of 2020. Because those rioters had the ideology of the Democratic Party. And the rioters, if you wish to call them of January 6th, did not. And the fact that they wanted to have even a commission. Which they have now postponed. What was it called again? This information unit, whatever was it called? Disinformation governments board? Governments. Yeah, governance board. Yes. The DGB as opposed to the KGB. That's right. I should have remembered that. The DGB. This information government board. That is an important thing the real passions come from something way deeper than just guns. The power of the state versus the power of the individual. The hatred of the founders of this country on the part of the left is not because they had slaves. It is because of their ideas, and their ideas were that the individual should be more powerful than the state. They don't like that. The left everywhere is for power. And the an America was founded to profoundly limit the power not only of the state, but even of the majority. That's why there's a U.S. Senate, and that's why there is an Electoral College. The left is exactly correct. The founders that did not believe in pure democracy. They keep talking democracy, but we didn't found a democracy. We found that a republic. Not the same thing. The individual is to be powerful. The bigger the state, the smaller the citizens, the statement I came up with years ago, we have a bumper sticker if you want to put it on your car. The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen. Yes. Thank you. David. Congressman David dreyer, a true gentleman. Good man. He liked that line, and he recorded it as it were. That's what the ultimate issue is about. But it is amazing how little power they want people to have to take care of themselves that they wouldn't even want armed adults at schools. That is a giveaway only the police should have weapons, and of course they want fewer police, which is really a terrific idea in a society that has the amount of violence we do. Or any society. So, that's what it is. That's really what the gun debate is about. The power of the state versus the power of the individual, and so you have two risks. You have the risk that the state will use it its power, irresponsibly, and you have the risk that the individual that individuals will use their power irresponsibly. Again, that's a left right divide. We on the right fear government more than we fear individuals. That's correct. The 100 million people, non combatants, not talking war, a 100 million people that were killed by governments in the 20th century. Is considerably more than individuals have killed. The state is a very scary thing..

"Four. What do you think I'm Hugh Hewitt on the Hugh Hewitt show? Welcome back, America, you Hewitt life from the West Coast today. Two American journalists have been killed in Ukraine today among them peers. Zach risky, a cameraman for Fox News. We know that Benjamin hall is injured as well. I don't know the extent of his injury. Joining me now is Leland vitter. Many years at Fox News, now the anchor for news nation now. Good morning, Leland. How are you? Hey, good morning. Tell us about Pierre. I know you worked with him. An incredible man. Cameraman by trade, but he turned into a photographer, a producer, a video editor, equipment repairman, phenomenal friend, occasional therapist, and warzone to war zone. And when I worked with Pierre during my four years overseas, what was incredible is that two things were true when you showed up at a story with Pierre, which is number one is whatever the story was, he had already been there. He already knew more about the story than you did. We like to say as young foreign correspondents that Pierre probably had forgotten more about war than we would ever know. And two, he had this incredible smile that brought a sense of calm and relaxation to the most dangerous of situations. And it was pretty incredible that oftentimes when the rest of us would have our hearts and our throats and want to scream, Pierre had a chuckle because he had been through so many situations like that before and was able to help so many of us through whatever situation we were in. You know how many of the night I've talked to people like Dexter filkins, John Fisher burns, Tom ricks, and they are always full of accolades for the team that supports them. They're the face, they're the writer, they're you, the person in front of the camera, et cetera. For every year, for every John Fischer burns, there's a Pierre, and I hope I'm saying Zach was correctly, if I'm not correct me. Say it first again. Zack chef ski. Zach chevsky, thank you, Pierre, Zach chevsky, is the cameraman who died and obviously we've got other journalists injured over there. Benjamin hall, among them. I don't know what it's like to be in a war zone, but it must be just a constant grind, Leland. It really is. And I think it speaks to Pierre's moral courage and I use that those words with deference to what it means, but Pierre understood the risk. There's a lot of guys out on what we used to call the circuit going from war zone to war zone who are the glory hounds who enjoy the adrenaline rush and living out there. He wasn't like that. He understood and now more than ever, that having somebody there on the ground to tell the truth and to see what was happening and report that back matter that there was value in that and that it was important for the world to see through unfiltered eyes, what was happening and he believed in that. And he believed in that higher calling and as we talked about PR yesterday with friends, the one thing that kept coming, we kept coming back to his Pierre died doing something that he knew was really in truly important and he truly cared about it and he'd been out there for 20 plus years. He was back in Afghanistan all the way back before 9 11. Covering covering war correspondent conflict. From Ernie pyle forward, war correspondents know what to do. And there's a fallen journalist memorial underway, congressman David dreyer, former congressman, organizing it. I hope it picks up momentum to honor people like this..

I decided after many, many years of chasing kids and working, I was going to vote because I was not going to let that woman get in. So when I went to go vote and I had my I got a registration card to vote. When I went there, the woman said to me, well, I'm sorry, but you're not on the list. And I'm got my card right there in my hand. And I said, what do you mean? She goes, well, you can't vote. Well, there was a cop standing outside the door and I yelled. Go get that cup and bring him in there. And I know more than that, can you imagine she actually found my name? That's something she had a deadly must have heard me say that I was not going to vote for Hillary. Triple 8 9 7 one S 8 GA triple 8 9 7 one 7 two four three. I am Larry elder we are relief at dot com studio. We're talking about the device that speech Joe Biden gave about voting rights, and whether I do this true that these dastardly Republicans are suppressing the vote when it comes to black and brown voters. If that's the case, they're not doing a very good job of it. All of that in more triple 8 9 7 one S 8 GE. Peter is in Orange County. Peter you're on the Larry hill to show. Thank you so much for calling. Do we have Peter? What's up, mister state from south central happy MLK day? What's up with you? Happy MLK day to you too. Oh. Go rams. I'm watching a great game today. Go Brown. Very funny. You know, it's a bummer. I feel sorry for you because you didn't make it, but I wish the Cleveland Cavaliers will at least they're doing good. Well, they're playing. They're playing a lot better. They're playing a lot better than I thought they would the Cavaliers are. Yeah. Anyway, on this, they never mind my favorite quote, darkness can not drive out darkness, only like to do that. They can not drive out hate, only love can do that. That is a quote I live by. And that's also why I don't believe in cancel culture because I believe work with that one. Plus, I watched an episode of moral court online recently and I've really fascinated by our hosting and speaking style. If only that show wasn't canceled after a season, you're really great though nonsense judge. Well, Peter, thank you. Thank you so much for that. He's talking about a court show that I did call moral court. We did it. I think it was in the year 2000. Not mistaken. And it was, in my humble opinion, the best court show ever, that includes Judge Judy, which I think is a wonderful court show that is no longer an original production, but more important was on just for one year it was on a 135 some odd markets. And it was on first in New York late at night like 1 o'clock in the morning. It did so well they put it to 11 o'clock. In LA it beat all of its competition, including local news and the young and the restless the soap opera. And in Chicago after the show was canceled, the station that carried it kept running it for almost 6 years. So one years of show that kept running it for almost 6 years, so you know what the verdict is. You already know the outcome of the case, but they were still running them because they felt they felt they thought they were entertaining. And when the show was canceled, after the show got counted, the numbers went through the roof. They just waited another week or two or three before canceling it. I think that show would still be on. Anyway, it was a wonderful court show, and from time to time, I tried to revive it. Once you went to court show his day, I just awfully difficult to bring it back. And I've never been able to succeed in bringing it back, but every now and then I'll walk down the street and somebody will call me the judge. I want you the judge and moral court. And when the show was on the air, I was invited to the Washington capital, to dine in the house, cafeteria. By congressman David dreyer. From California, so we're going to security four or 5 different security stops. And many of the security guards were black, and they said, judge, judge, judge. And of course, members of Congress don't watch television. And so David said, why are these people reacting this way? I've come through here with heads of states and these people have not reacted this way. Why are they reacting this way towards you? I told them about my show called moral court, and I said it is very popular people among black people. And he was pretty impressed with how people reacting to me. Anyway, the show lasted for just one year. And Las Vegas ran it for three or four more years. I was in Las Vegas after the show had gotten canceled maybe a year so after that in a hotel room getting ready to get rest and go downstairs for a meeting, and it was on TV. So a lot of people kept running it in different markets because it was so popular. Kind of a cult favorite now. Anyway, thank you very much for that.

"That out. Congressman I got to talk to you about build back better. Before we run out of time. Actually, I'm going to talk to you about the Chinese. Do you know Wang honing as the chief theorist or the Chinese Communist Party? I read that long form piece last month about the impact of his academic work on Xi Jinping. So I'm loosely familiar with. Okay, so the palladium piece, I'm calling attention to it in a column, which will be in the post today. It seems to me that the search for core values explains a lot that he is after, explains a lot of what G is up to. How do we influence them to understand it can't be Leninist Marxist theory? That will collapse. You're talking about how do we convince the members of the Chinese Communist Party or the Chinese people here? The Chinese Communist Party. Well, it's the former. I think it's going to be very difficult to convince she and a small cadre of true believers because I think we underestimate the extent to which they are committed leninists. This is a point that Matt pottinger, David feith and others have made repeatedly. And ultimately, they believe having studied extensively. The ways in which the Soviet Union went wrong and failed, they believe they've learned from those mistakes and perfected that Leninist model. And now are using technology to perfect totalitarianism. And so, ultimately, I think, ours long term strategy needs to involve on some level, driving a wedge between the party and granted the party is 80 million members. It has more members than Germany has citizens, but the core party and the Chinese people, because the Chinese people, in many ways, I believe over the long term are our allies, the Chinese people are the biggest victims of the repression of the party. And ultimately, I do think this model, if we hold firm if we stay strong, if we merely defend the borders of the free world right now in foremost among those, are the borders of Taiwan. Ours is a defensive strategy. We're not trying to take territory or upend the status quo. We're trying to defend it. If we do that, I believe over the long term, their model will collapse. But it does count on us, returning, and I say returning because I think we've abandoned it to the model of freedom and responsibility, individual responsibility and subsidiarity here in America. We're actually moving in some ways towards a CCP light model where we want the federal government to do everything for us to end where we began hue. If we go further down that path, we will actually defeat ourselves. We will become the very thing. We are trying to defeat and that's really what concerns me over the well put. We'll come back to this because I do believe there's an opportunity to persuade Wang. Mister Wang, that there will not work. Last quick question, have you heard from Ron Johnson yet? Whether he's running in 2022. I have not. I suspect he will run, and I will be fully supportive of him. I know he's going to win that. The Democrats are going to nominate a crazy progressive that is out of step with the common sense values that Wisconsin, I told dear, I can guarantee you that here. I know that.
