"Is a lifestyle. It's a way of being where your personal struggles that we have is a daily. Perhaps an episode situation. When something is an episode we have a choice how going to look at it but if the foundation for our life is gratitude gratitude. We have breath to breathe. We have food clothing shelter. That is a place of having that gratitude everything we do as opposed to random life events happening and we have a choice of what do we do with that. Yes i think what happens is that we make the permanent things where we make the temporary things permanent. Yes three details when we do that. It messed with our foundation in my field. We have what's called. Emotional forecasting basically says when you take a snapshot of your life right this second one things seem dire when they seemed so overwhelming and the new forecast into the future. This is how my life is always gonna be. This is the despair. I'm going to feel and unfortunately when we do that. We don't come from a place just like you said of overcoming adversity that place of power we come from a place of this is my life so my thoughts are are perhaps data data victim and once again i'm not minimizing anyone struggle but a victim victim like mentality and the next thought builds off of that and the next thought builds off of that so it becomes a foundation of i can't can't do anything so when we do that emotional forecasting when it's using an unhealthy way that is unfortunately what we will become because whatever what man thinks is what he will become absolutely and talked about growing up in the projects and all that kind of stuff but we never i never had poor or or insufficient dreams. My dreams are always full and they were always for the best and i think that there's nothing wrong with with desiring the best for your life you know and and there's and you might not always attain that may or may not always get that but along the way you're gonna grow in along the way you're gonna get something has and so that's the other thing that i think has been pretty important. Especially for me is <hes> wanting to always get the best the best that that they have to offer as best at that situation has to offer for me <hes> and not settling for anything other than that because because for me anyway if i do that then i feel like i've cheated myself some and there's nothing wrong with that type of self care. I think there is a certain time hi to be selfish. <hes> that makes sense just so that you can give to others because you need to have something to give yes yes. I think there's nothing worse than us not taking self care and when we don't know for me if i do all these things and then the next thing i know i'm like does crabby mean person and i'm like go. James are the self-help person in new york. You can't even to yourself whatever it may be but i think i think you're absolutely right but i really liked that. You come from a place of asking asking yourself. These are my words not yours. What am i learning about myself in this situation right now when you when you have that mentality you can be incredibly proud of yourself that i've overcome. We're come something. I didn't realize that i've already passed that test them in the past and now i'm continuously doing doing really well net or you can remind yourself okay. We'll dame's for example your your uh. <hes> lohan patients today. Patience is something you get to practice doesn't mean even necessarily want it but you get to practice so in that moment every opportunity whether we want to or not is a beautiful time a wonderful time. Choose have the self development and growth just simply by saying. What am i learning about myself right this second yep for me. It's <hes> three. I call it. The three rs reflect regrouping relaunch. I do on a regular basis. I'd like to see where i am. What is it that i did that was good in that situation. That wasn't good situation death. Get yourself back together in novelist relaunch back out into the marketplace so to speak and i do that on on a regular basis. That's amazing wonderful tip for all of us switching gears to your book getting undressed from paralysis to purpose. What do you want the biggest takeaway for all your readers to have. I think the biggest takeaway is that <hes> getting undressed is something that we all do and the most important aspect are the clothes that you're that you're putting on because it's an indication of where you're heading your identity your identity you know the the things that we took off last night we that was yesterday and and we're going to put on something today. That's gonna be an indication of where we're going and that regardless of the situation situation. You're in <hes> as long as you're breathing. There's a possibility that it could get better that there's hope for you and i want people when they read michael edit and have an audience in mind when i wrote the book that i had a purpose i had a purpose in mind and the purpose was that the reader would find the inspiration asian and encouragement to move forward from a difficult place to a better place ness as something a stumbling boxers a stepping-stone absolutely and that's really the <music> awesome it <hes> desire i have for the beautiful just even thinking about the whole concept of getting undressed and redressing oneself to piggyback off of what you said <hes> those labels that we have for herself and sometimes events we automatically assume is who we are. You went through a divorce. You're divorced with your bankruptcy or bankruptcy or bankrupt person. You are mark <hes>. You're a heartbroken person. Whatever it is we create these labels and then the label or from that events and then all of a sudden we become but your your book itself from the the way. I understood that getting undressed. Is you decide who you're going to be does. Does this situation. Tell you're going to tell you who you're going to be. Were you determine here going to be based off of how you present yourself not only to yourself in the mirror present yourself to the world around you absolutely and there's vulnerability some vulnerability with since yes there s the one last thing on the title of the book. It's interesting because i had to teach myself how to get undressed. When i was in the rehabilitation nations that you have to relearn everything once you germs your lose lose the use of your legs and so they taught me we have. I remember it being taught how to get dressed and that was like one of the greatest days in the rehab center for me because i was about independence about moving forward where that evening there was an emergency in the in the rehab center in no one came to help me get undressed and i either was going to sleep in my chair or is going to figure out a way to get undressed and and get in bed and have a good night's rest was struggle. It was a struggle but i figured it out and that's where the title of getting undressed came from because that to me was a pivotal point that led to my independence and gave me confidence that i could do now what i needed to move forward. Wow thank you so much for sharing that. What a beautiful example of tenacity but your determination and just a lesson for each one of us understand that we have a choice. Do we wait for someone or do we do it on our own and that is an amazing powerful lesson. I think you can teach us. Thank you james yeah my pleasure. It has been a fantastic time talking to these today but if my listeners like to find for more information about you to purchase your book getting undressed from promises to purpose where they find all this information online okay <hes> the book is available on amazon and also from my website. "David reviews his book getting undressed from paralysis to purpose does scherzer's personal journey of how discovered purpose in the midst of personal tragedy he he realized that particular break from his own problems for the benefit of helping others with their problems he could purpose into action. He teaches. You do not have to experience a tragedy in your own life to make a change change personal transformation. Welcome to my david thank you. It's great to be here. Yes i'm really looking forward to this. Your story is incredibly inspirational. I know you have so much involved with alison awesome. Thank you once again now when you were a teenager. Your life totally changed what happened. Absolutely i was fifteen year old sophomore in high school and <hes> one week before basketball tryouts. I had gotten a clean bill of health in our ready to go and try out and one of my goals was always to make our high school basketball team. One of my goals and i do that freshman year so i was disappointed about that. I spent that whole next year working as hard as i could get myself ready putting putting in the work just just doing things that were gonna put me in a better position <hes> well on october nineteenth nineteen seventy nine. It was a friday. I went to school that day. We had exam zam so we had a short day afterwards. We played basketball. My back was bothering me just a little bit nothing crazy. I thought maybe i slept funny or something like that. <hes> <hes> and as the day progressed. I wasn't quite myself. I played that day with the guys but i didn't have quite lifted that. I normally would have sir. I went home home and away down for a while and you know back in the day robitussin and land down that was a cure for everything and so the heck lay lay down and i get up i woke up and <hes> i literally just about collapsed onto the floor my gosh and so i grabbed grabbed a table. I called my parents and clearly they came running in and from there we went to the hospital which thanks that he was across the street and we went to the emergency room about five hours later for them to run some tests and a blood vessel had erupted on my spinal cord omega so spinal spinal aneurysm which is pretty rare and <hes> we did some quick exploratory surgery but there was nothing they could do at that point and so in less than a thirty six hour period you know when i went from walking to eighty six wow. I can't imagine what that was like. It doesn't matter what age you are to go from to have well for one you had these hopes hopes and dreams of you're gonna make the basketball team. That was your mission in a time and then all of a sudden to have this quote random event happened literally change your life. I can't even imagine what that was like feel. How did you come to terms with it or come to grips with it because i don't know how that minimizes your experience but what was. What was it like for you well. You know it's interesting. I i credit my parents awful lot because we grew up and i think i think we were poor but i'm not really sure as an amazing that's wonderful life france and and so one of the things they always taught us was about being thankful for the things that we did have it. We never talked about the things we didn't have and so. There were things that were put into me as a child but i didn't know any better when this happened but then to move forward you know that was that was my gold at the time <hes> i oh i didn't know the severity of it. I didn't understand the complexity of it but i knew that i needed to move forward and my goal is to get back to school now all circa. I'm thinking i'm going to be okay. You gonna be okay because you've never experienced that before. Obviously it's like being sick and all of a sudden. You'll be absolutely because you haven't experienced anything like that like i said i had a clean bill health a week prior and so <hes> i am really grateful just ahead some great friends and family and you know faith faith cakes in really helped me to move forward and for me. I didn't know any better might my parents always taught us when other thing and he said they they taught us that there are two types of people those that complain about getting wet or those who get an umbrella. I told us the importance of having having an umbrella in life because there's going to be some rain. There's gonna be some difficulty in what you wanna. Do is try to protect yourself to be as dry as you can. Yes which is a proactive and anticipatory is proactive and so again that was my mindset and with with with that as my foundation i begin to move forward looking for the things that i could do and sue <hes> whatever the therapists were asking me to do. I wanted to do those to the best of my ability because my goal was to to move forward and get out of rehab as quickly as possible. Get back to school and kind of get get going again and that's that's an amazing thing that your parents were able to instill still that way comes from a place of power or place of victimhood and of course. I don't minimize anyone's struggle because there's a proper time for grieving but there there comes a time of what do you do with the situation at hand. I recently just did a show which talked about radical acceptance. It's a fancy term in my field which basically says you accept the facts as they are. Dr doesn't mean you agree with. It doesn't mean you like it as to put someone off the hook or get someone off. The hook simply is it. These are the facts. What do you do with your life to move forward and not sounds like that was an amazing thing that your parents parents were able to teach you and that's why successful amazing person that you are because you can use that as a platform to help people to find your purpose in that absolutely i <unk> i. I never denied existent what happened but i never gave it the right to ruin my life. I was i had the i had the power to deal with the adversity to to minimize to minimize its power in my life. You know i i overcome. I like overcoming. I don't like i don't like surviving and so hello to overcome is the surrender something powerless and adversity comes to all of us and i find adversity is an unforeseen situation that has has the potential the potential to leave negative lasting impact and how you deal with that determines the impact that it has in so for me how i saw this was this was not that great thing especially after seeing others in the rehabilitation center who situations were much worse than mine much worse than i could have ever imagined. I never knew that people were in such dire physical situations and that changed my perspective immediately. I was like you know something and i'm not so bad. I think i can do this in sometime. It helps yeah definitely give you perspective. What was a pivotal moment for you when you found your own purpose because that's one thing you teach is is to help others helps you with your purpose. What was the defining moment for you. Well i think over time high. I learned about my purpose. <hes> as i was coaching basketball all in dealing with using teaching in high school i began to understand that there was a gift ahead to connect with people and that and that they were inspired. I didn't know that they they were inspired by what i was doing. What i was saying until years later and they come back and they share these things with you and i began to understand of the joy that i would get from hearing stories of how my life helped people to achieve things and that's when i begin to say i believe that might gifting are part of my purpose and then my purpose shouldn't be something that i have to kinda discover outside of who i am if that makes sense. It's an intrinsic gift so in other words. You don't have to work at it. You don't have to practice it and so when you do that it just comes out effortlessly comes naturally absolutely maybe that's a great way of saying it and so clearly i've worked on on worked on it once i figured out that's what it was to try to affect it but <hes> that gift of being able to connect with people and to share things that <hes> other people can say with may not necessarily have the same impact. That's begin to understand that i'm really here to help others through my life and with the things that i say and do and i think what you do a fantastic job a little bit of time that you and i have discussed is there's a joy about you. There's this this element of self assurance. You're relaxed within yourself and there's a joy of hope. Maybe that's from looking for. There's a hopeful air about you. Which i think is an amazing thing regardless of what you've experienced. You're able to instill that opened other people so i think that's a beautiful gift able to give 'em and the other element is you don't do this to get any credit you do this once again and so hope and people and i think that's why you can relate so well people because as we all know there's people who perhaps get on stage and they're looking for attention. They're looking for all those different types of things but your story is is. You and you are working through that not only in your own life every day. It's a new struggle new journey by you. Have that hope that you can sell other people so i just wanted to let you know that that's what i see in you so far well the issue mentioned struggle because because i i wanna make it really clear to people walking is walking is much better. Let's just put that out and and and so there are days in there are moments when i struggled when i don't feel like doing this and i don't feel like getting in and out of a car that day doing the things i have to do. I was recently on a trip <hes> in north carolina and i had some health issues that were very difficult but thankfully there was someone there that i could get some help with <hes> and so the in the midst of all of that they're still is room to be thankful. I might not be thankful for everything that has happened to me but i can be thankful in everything so there's a place for gratitude because it could have been worse i could have been by myself not had helping those types of things and so as as you said the absent hope leads people to despair and and i just believe in hope and i believe that there is a positive outcome on the other other side of your of your struggle because victory is a great thing to have and you learn so many anything in the process in sometime. It is uncomfortable at some time. It is hard so i just i just wanted to make that clear that the struggle does continue. I mean it's been forty forty years now and every day. I have to have a new resolve each day to make this day the best they can be because you know what i mean and not get more than today exactly. That's a beautiful beautiful sentiment. You know it also makes me think of the difference. Between gratitude is.

"With james fill out that form to get started today focusing on gratitude. We all like to receive compliments when someone says to be done a really good job or we look really nice. Today we feel really good and many times it can change your outlook on the day or perhaps even that moment what happened well. Somebody pointed something out to you that they really liked about you. They focus on something. That was important to them. I am in positive psychology. We teach that you focus on the things that are going well in your life that is really all you'll see if we continually talk about our problems are focusing everything everything. We don't have not really all you're going to see around you. When you were a child and people in your life would encourage you those words that they said really helped you set the tone own for what your future looks like and gave you the confidence the encouragements the discipline to push forward in your life and so when you would hear those things it became truth for you. It became your reality. I can't do this with hard work and dedication. I can overcome this obstacle. Those words that were spoken over you helped you focus and become the person today. It's the same concept with gratitude. Gratitude is the perception or what we look at our how we see the world to determine how we interact with the world all around us. If i'm continually focusing on what i don't have i'm not grateful for the things i do have when we come from a place of gratitude and joy that we have of what we have it starts to change our world and what's really important to us. It comes from a place of surplus in other words. It comes from a place of meeting. All of your needs instead of coming from a place of a deficit. I don't have this amount of money. I don't have this car. I don't have a spouse. I don't have the job that i want all of those thoughts it creates a negative could have environment for us. Remember in psychology. We teach that whatever you perceive to be true now the bridge your beliefs determines what you feel what you feel determines what you do so so if my thoughts are always on. "Up to ten years in prison. David Cook is the top prosecutor in Macon Georgia about eighty miles southeast of Atlanta, and he joins us to explain why he won't bring charges onto this law. Welcome, thanks. I'm glad to be here. I want to begin by saying that the Georgia law as well as those in other states. These laws are all on hold while they're being challenged in court. So is your statement that you're not going to bring prosecutions purely hypothetical for now? I responded to questions about it that were asked by local media, and by my constituents they wanted to know what was going to happen. Once this law came into effect. So I just went straight to it. I looked at it and I said this law is unconstitutional, and I'm not going to enforce it unconstitutional because of the supreme court decision Roe versus Wade. Many opponents of abortion are hoping that the supreme court will strike down the road versus Wade decision. Would that change your calculus? Right now. I'm looking that this violates the supreme law of the land, so based on that I'm saying what my oath requires me to do. Now, if the law changes, then maybe I'll need to do something else. I just wanna be clear when you say unconstitutional argued strictly referring to the Roe versus Wade supreme court decision. Or is there some thing else in the constitution that you think makes this law illegitimate, regardless what the supreme court might say, I think that Roe versus Wade as based on Griswold versus Connecticut recognizes the right to privacy. And so based on that this laws unconstitutional, if the supreme court strikes down Roe versus Wade, it's still on tiredly clear to me, whether you would then comply with this state laws, written. I think if Roe versus Wade is overturned struck down. Then the consequences are going to be far greater than just abortion. Now, if someone performs an abortion and that causes a woman. To die or does something terrible. And this is the law that I have to work with to hold them accountable, then, of course, I would need to do something in that circumstance and prosecute them, not only for violating the law, but really something, this immoral and wrong in that they were careless and killed a woman, so there are complicated situations that are gonna come out of this. If Roe versus Wade is overturned the Georgia law includes only limited exceptions for rape, or incest. You worked as a prosecutor in Georgia sex crimes unit. Did that experience interacting with victims of rape incest, affect your view here? Well, let me just say that I've spent my entire career protecting women and children and doing everything I can to get Justice for them, and I'm not about to abandon them now. And that helped inform my decision to I need to say as the low is written right now. It says that there are exceptions for Raper incest, but it requires a police report to be filed. Now, we know that's not how that works that most victims of rape, or incest, or other types of sexual assault. Never report their crimes, and those that do report them report. It years or months later is not like they're going to do that immediately. That's just not what the data and our experience shows, what about the prosecutors who think your decision not to prosecute under. This is inappropriate call for a prosecutor to make. I think they disagree on my analysis, but I don't think they can legitimately say that it's not my call to make when you're the district attorney the buck stops with you, you decide where to concentrate your prosecutorial resources. I prefer to use those resources to go after the people who threaten our families the most rapists, and murderers and gang members, and people who distabilise our society that is what I prefer to do.
