Joining us now is Secretary of State from Missouri, J ashcroft, who is helping lead a effort of Missouri, Florida and West Virginia out of Eric, which is a very important story here. Secretary of State ashcroft welcome to the program. What is ER IC or Eric? And they say it's bipartisan, but what is the truth? Please explain. Thanks for having me. Eric was supposed to be an organization run by states that would share election data and use that to clean up their voter rolls and look for people that were trying to vote in multiple states or did vote in multiple states. I joined Eric with that goal in mind and about a year ago I realized that there were some things wrong with it. They weren't requiring states to share data that would help us find people that were voting in multiple states. They were requiring us to try to get people registered to vote that had already said they didn't want to be registered to vote. Instead of just cleaning up our voter rolls, they were restricting how we could use the data that we got from them inside our state to make the best use of the people's money. And of course, many states that surround Missouri, we have 8 states that surround us 5 of them weren't a part of Eric. So it really just didn't make sense for us to stay in it. And I think what really should be talked about is why wasn't Eric willing to focus on going after vote fraud, making sure that the roles were cleaned. Why weren't they willing to make those necessary changes? Sure. So CNN claims that it's bipartisan. Give us some background. Who started Eric? Where did this come from? When they say things are bipartisan, I get a little uneasy. Tell us about it. Well, probably bipartisan means it's the worst of both worlds. You know, there's bad stuff with one party, good stuff with the other when they agree it's really bad. This was started by the pew foundation that I believe there was money from the Soros foundation that came into it. It was started by about 7 states that wanted to get together both Republicans and Democrats. But for me, it's not about who started it. It's not about, frankly, it shouldn't be bipartisan. It should be nonpartisan. The administration of elections should be like a good basketball referee that runs a good game and you never notice the referee because what you're focused on is the game and it's running well. This should be an organization that's wholly focused on making sure that we have good election registration roles that are clean. We send people to the right polling place and if people do cheat and vote multiple times, we can come after them with the big stick of government. They didn't do that. They're not willing to prioritize that. In fact, there's a gentleman on the board named David Becker. That's a hyper partisan lefty. He's not even a voting member. And what I suggested was, why don't we get rid of non voting members? And some of them said, well, you can have a hyper partisan conservative on there. I said, no, that's not the point. The point is not to be partisan with the administration of the elections. The point is for us to run good, nonpartisan elections, and that the people decide as they wish..

"Will fight through the BS and the garbage. But how do you get fair and free elections? You have to fight and win to make them fair and free. And we needed another stark reminder that we have incompetent people running the show in Arizona. Well, you know, officials in Maricopa County disagree as you might well imagine. Here's Bill Gates. Remember he was with us a couple of days ago. The county supervisor who was here on sound on today reacting to Carrie Lake, listen. It is a fence for Carrie Lake to say that these people behind me are slow rolling this. When they're working 14 to 18 hours. So I really hope this is the end of that now. We can be patient and respect the results when they come out. And so the count will continue into the weekend. The outcome of these two, again, will determine whether Georgia is the tiebreaker when the runoff between senator Warnock and Herschel Walker happens on December 6th. And we spoke one week ago right at this time about what was about to happen in these midterm elections. In a fascinating conversation with major Garrett, CBS News chief Washington correspondent author of the book, the big truth. And we wanted to bring him back exactly one week later because of his unique perspective on the stakes in this cycle. And because he's a connoisseur of Kentucky bourbon, major, welcome back. It's great to be with you. When we spoke last week, did you think the house would still be up in the air? On Friday? I thought it was possible, but like many reporters who were talking to Republicans very close, we watching house races and the underlying polling data and Democrats who are doing the same. It felt as if there would be more Republican victory sooner on election night than manifested. We're all looking at Virginia and Rhode Island and Connecticut and Indiana's first congressional district is early bellwethers. And by about 9 30 on election night, those were coming back either as toss ups or lean Democrats in many cases. Republicans only won one of three races they targeted in Virginia, didn't win the one in Rhode Island, didn't win Indiana. Didn't win anything they had circled the map on in Pennsylvania. And so it became clear that this was if there was going to be a Republican resurgence or enough to get a majority, it would probably have to happen out west. And my co author, David Becker, said to many outlets, including CBS, we may not know for days upon days upon days because California votes count its votes slowly and typically that doesn't matter because margins are so wide there. Well, they're close in several house races. Those races are still awaiting verdicts and that's why we don't have a House majority yet. And they've got a good half a million votes or something to count in California. It's this is really just a way CBS News calculates that some networks and cables have projections up. We don't. What we do is we describe where we think the floor for both parties in the house is. And we believe the floor currently for the Republicans in the House is two 13 and the floor for Democrats is two O 6. We don't offer projection numbers that say plus or minus off that. We think that's too confusing. We believe the floor for Democrats two O 6, the floor for Republicans two 13, meaning Republicans are closer to that magic number of two 18. They sure are. In the Senate, we talked a lot last week about the fact that democracy was on the ballot, the fact that we could have states stacked with people who deny the results of the 2020 election, it didn't happen quite that way. I know a lot of things are still up in the air in Arizona and things could still happen. But there seem to be largely a rejection to that type of rhetoric. And what's really been turned into a narrative that it was a bad night for Donald Trump. But were people saying no to the phenomenon that you and I were talking about? They were. And look, our book, the big truth, wasn't on the ballot in any respect, but what we argue in the book, and it's really not an argument. It's a celebration first of all of election administrators and poll workers around our country and full observers who do this work every election and do it better than any other country on the planet, celebration of that. And a complete declaration of the facts of the 2020 election and how we can believe in election results going forward. All of that was vindicated on Tuesday night. Because all the procedures worked and the results are believed and many Republicans who were once playing with the notion of denialism conceded exactly what they should do in America. You try your best and if you lose, you can see that we began to see that. There really is a noticeable voter rejection in many places under lots of different circumstances of the idea that denialism is a believable thing. It's not. And not only that, for Republicans, I would say this to this entire party. It's destructive. If you have a candidate who tells swing voters, you might be conspirators in a crime against democracy and it's not true. You know what they're going to do? They're not going to vote for you. And that played out over and over and over again. What a scenario to imagine. If you're down at the MGM at national harbor later tonight, a major, what are the odds look like for Democrats keeping the house? Is that even a conversation we have with a straight face?

"Very, very probably do it again, okay? Very, very much. Very, very those t-shirts are already out there, right? Oh, yeah. It doesn't take a lot boy. Not on this night in Iowa, chuck grassley in the house. It was outdoors actually. John Deere hats everywhere. Oh, that's nice, well. Get ready. That's all I'm telling you first. Yeah. Get ready. Okay, and then the reports are everywhere. November 14th. Which is all, you know, it's basically what he's already said, just two more varies. So people like me will play it for you. And of course, Donald Trump is not on the ballot next Tuesday, but a lot of his chosen candidates are, and as we've discussed, many, including those who continue to question the outcome of the 2020 election, are poised to win. President Biden spoke about that last night to listen. It's estimated that there are more than 300 election deniers on the ballot all across America. This year, we can't ignore the impact. This is having on our country. It's damaging its corrosive and its destructive. With candidates for Secretary of State, attorney general, of course governor, potentially stacking states like Arizona with yes election. Deniers and boy, I know that can be qualified in a lot of different ways and I'll have to deal with that after. But that's why I wanted to talk with major Garrett tonight. As everybody goes into it, hopefully a big thinking weekend. The CBS News correspondent chief Washington correspondent is out with a new book, but he co wrote with David Becker, it's called the big truth upholding democracy in the age of the big lie. There are few working journalists in Washington who have his sense of history. And I want to welcome you major to Bloomberg sound on. Thank you for joining us. I'm very, very, very, very, very, very very happy to be with you. Very, very well done. You not only work to debunk conspiracies in this book surrounding the 20 election, but you move the ball forward here to next week and beyond. Could you have imagined when you started writing this that so many politicians who say Joe Biden stole the election would be nominated and poised to win? I feared it might be true and one of the reasons that David and I felt compelled to write the book was to have something permanent, comprehensive, one place where you can get all the answers you're looking for about this fundamental question. And look, I don't consider it an unimportant question. Was the election in 2020 stolen? That's a really important question. It's an important question about any election. And deserves to be answered. And it has been. I like to sometimes talk about this in NFL terms. There have been more than 100 video reviews of the same play. They've all upheld the original call. Okay? And it's not close. It's not as if there is one part of the cleat hanging ever so slightly over the sideline. Making the difference between a first down or a fourth down or a touchdown or a non touchdown. It's not close. All the video reviews, all of the courts, all of the people who have been asked for the quote unquote evidence have either provided evidence that doesn't exist that doesn't say what they say it does, or walked away. And let me give you a very specific contemporary, very recent example. There is a documentary out there. It has the number 2000 in it. I won't. Right. Grace it with its full title. But it has the title 2000 in it. I think I made that up. Let's say $30 to watch it. You have to be $30 to watch. You do? Okay. Wow. Yeah, this is not seen it. This is one of the parts of this. And it's two jurisdictions in our country. Arizona and Georgia. Said, you know what? This looks interesting to us. And went to the producers of this film. And said, we would like to see your evidence. Nothing was given to the law enforcement entities in Arizona and Georgia. Nothing, because it would have to withstand what? Scrutiny. It would have to actually prove what is tantalizingly, but deeply deceptively suggested, and that's what's part of this whole carnival of lies around the 2020 election. And there's actually a very good news story. Not only about the 2020 election, but about what's going to happen on Tuesday, which is our elections are local. There is no federal department of elections. We do this locally. We do this at the city, county, neighborhood, and precinct level, 10,000 of them across our country, Americans, your neighbors do this hard work. Many of them volunteers, many of them professional election administrators, some Democrats, some Republicans, some independents, but all devoted to one thing. Making sure people can cast their ballots, calmly safely, accessibly, and that those ballots are accurately counted. Yeah. And we do that work in our country now better than we've ever done it before. Well, you know, even close. Joe Biden or whoever is writing the speech last night, crystallized your point pretty well last evening. Listen to how he puts it. The great irony. About the two 20 election is

"Consumers small businesses and and even larger entities across the country We have we have constantly grown and started new lines of business started new ways of thinking always challenged ourselves to do better and to do more and as a result we are now a fairly sophisticated complex organization Which is a lot different from the the organization. I joined in nineteen ninety nine with a pretty basic roundup of checking savings credit card. As i mentioned my intro the majority of your peers in the late nineteen ninety s. Were focused on using the lower cost infrastructure of an online bank only as a deposit acquisition platform what prompted first internet bank to expand beyond that to loans and even to serve cuss beyond consumer market sensitive small businesses. It really the the desire to do more than just deposits and to be a full service. Bank came from our ceo and founder. David becker who was not a banker by trade but rather a small business owner himself he. He has been an entrepreneur since the age of eight when he had his first paper route and he's owned a business ever. Since and through that process he was a. He was running software companies in the late eighties and early nineties when i first started to work with him and he always found that his bankers wanted him to structure his business differently than he thought he ought to or they were restricting access to capital that he felt would have helped him to grow his business said through those experiences he wanted to be able to truly serve a business owner and and help them to grow their business and not to dictate how to run their business his idea about building a better banke always in the back of his mind was. Let's let's be able to work with the small business owner but the direct to consumer market certainly in the late nineties. When we were getting off the ground was a clearer path. Amazon had launched. Maybe not offering the robust lineup of products. That it does But we were starting to see more online only direct to consumer models and that was a very clear path forward so as we've been able to expand our small business offering into small business lending which we launched in twenty nineteen and even continue to diversify the products and services that were offering. That's been a longtime goal of ours and so we're so pleased to be able to be fulfilling match so when the position of online banking started to move to digital banking or mobile banking especially mobile banking. What did your organization needs to do to adapt to the way. Consumers wanted to engage on a smartphone. As opposed to their computer mogul banking has really been a game changer for us primarily because it brought the ability to do a check deposit in a very fast way and it was something that was always a hang up for us was getting deposits into the bank shore. We had a c. h. And wires and direct a positive payroll. But you always get that one. Little check may be from a neighbor or a friend or your grandmother on your birthday. And how do you get that deposited into the bank. So the ability to do mobile deposit capture was really important for us but also because we have such an on the go customer base We tend to have a customer who is perhaps traveling for work Very much not tied to a desk but Constantly on the go and being able to carry that phone or that that bank in your pocket was was critical to our success. So having that that robust banking experience right there in the palm of the hand we knew was going to be important so important in fact that we had it in the almost quickly after we launched in nineteen ninety nine. We were won- chain are. We were offering mobile banking on flip phones With with lines of tax so certainly not the the user interface that we see today with touch great touchstone bones Or touch screen phones rather But offering mobile banking very early and that has been a very important farm out for us. So why your competition was limited. Two decades ago virtually every finances toossion offers digital bank resist today. There are also dozens of digital banks. What's the difference between the way you serve the marketplace and the way most traditional banking organizations currently deliver mobile digital banking services. I think what really sets first internet apart. Jim is that we are customer. Centric and customer obsessed and have been since we launched in fact the idea behind first internet bank was do we make banking better for our customers. And it's that idea of wanting to do better by the customer that really makes us think about not just the online experience or the user interface but also the processes that are behind the scenes. We call it digital dna at first internet bank. And it's just this ability to understand that the online the mobile the digital banking experience needs to be inherently different than the in person banking experience and to be able to make that seamless to the customer in digital format. Sometimes means we are like that that duck that looks calm on the surface but his paddling like hell underneath so we'll have we'll have processes in place to make the user experience as friction less as seamless as possible because we understand the the digital experiences is just what they are seeing and maybe not so much. What's behind the scenes. Now because this has been the way your disease have been to the beginning. Do you see that your customers both small business and consumer based may expect more from you to do a better than a traditional bank here that are locally based are doing digital banking. And does it help you that. Your continuous thought process is only on improving the digital experience. If you're going to call yourselves first internet bank you'd better be darn good the online part of it right jam and and i think that yes. It does there. There is an expectation from our customers. And there's an expectation from our teams that we will do better and be better. And the like i said it extends beyond just what is on the user interface but also what we are doing behind the scenes to make that easier for the customer from the start. We've offered at an expanded range of services through our website Through online banking as well as through mobile banking. That many other banks did not offer. We understand that you may need to make a decision at two in the morning that you want to open a cd. So we make that an instant process for customers who already have a relationship with us to lock into the rate on their cd. We understand that you may have an inquiry that goes beyond the traditional balance last twenty transactions. So we have from the very beginning offered a variety of services on that we we constantly hear from other providers that other banks are not asking for this but because we have to deliver just as much of the bank as we can and through five inches of screen real estate we need to be able to deliver an.

"Thank you, Erin and happy 4th July Traffic in just a moment. But first, let's learn a little bit more about yesterday's Supreme Court ruling on voting rights. It upheld a pair of Arizona laws here is Jan Crawford, the to Arizona voting provisions had been on the books for years. The first discards ballots cast in the wrong precinct. The second ban so called ballot harvesting where third parties other than family collect piles of absentee ballots. Internal man. Arizona Attorney General Martin Runavik argued the case in favor of the voting laws. Why do you defend this? I want to make sure that everyone has the ability and the right to exercise the franchise. We also want to make sure that everyone has confidence in the process and they respect the results, and that's what these blocks are designed to do. Six justices on the court agreed that neither provision violated the Voting Rights Act because they were not enacted with a racially discriminatory purpose and states have an entirely legitimate interest in the prevention of fraud. But the course three liberal justices said the decision undermines the Voting Rights Act because laws like Arizona's discriminate against minority voters. In a statement, President Biden said he was deeply disappointed. It is critical that we make a distinction between Voter suppression. And suspension. The decision comes as 48 State legislatures have introduced 389 bills this year alone that could restrict voting access. CBS NEWS Election Law contributor David Becker the need for some kind of basic.

"W D you in this'll time, The Canceling of voter registration says not as Vegas in years past, when anywhere from a quarter to a half million were wiped from the rolls. This year's total is 113,000 be a J. C. Says these reporters who have changed their address. Been voted in a few years or have had election mail that couldn't be delivered and was returned about 12,000 are those who passed away. Critics say the so called purchase penalize voters who didn't move but decided not to cast ballots for several years. Georgia has also begun sharing info with other states to help identify voters who are not valid. Rob Stadler GNN news Thanks so much for being with us today. It's the Martha Zoller show. And, um, if you were called, we talked to a guy ah few weeks ago related to this voter bill that came out on David Becker was his name and we posted the It's in show clips if you want to go buying and listen to it, but he mentioned Georgia was going to start participating and be one of 31 states that participated in this database because while I believe elections will be controlled locally, there is a challenge when you're in a state like ours, and any state where people move around. And you don't know they've moved around. Now there is participation through this database between voter registration offices in different counties so you can find out When someone has moved from, you know, Hall County, Georgia to Fayette County, Kentucky, and you can take them off of the Hall County Georgia rolls and put them on the fate County worlds, So I think that's really positive, keeping a clean And and up to date voting list and it's not just, you know, I'm gonna take a little bit of issue with rob that it's not just people that didn't vote for a couple of years. You the way it goes in Georgia, you don't vote for four years. Then you get a letter voted all you get a letter. If in a year you don't respond to that letter, you get another letter and then And if a year you don't respond to that letter now it's been six years since you voted. You get another year to let people know you're still out there. So after seven years of not voting Then they take you off the rolls. I don't think by anybody's definition that is being you know, unkind or suppressing someone if you didn't vote for seven years. You're probably not going to vote or you've probably moved. I mean, I would imagine if somebody's going to whole election cycles without voting. They've probably forgotten whether or not they actually are registered or they don't care. You know it's okay in this country. You don't have to. We the only countries that have 100% turnout are Communist countries. Okay? You can vote if you want to, or not Vote. Heck, some in some counties, your precinct might change three times and 70 years. I mean, if you're not checking in with in seven years, you're gonna be completely lost anyway, So I'm glad George is participating in this database. I think it will help keep things better, and it's with 31 States. That are already participating. And I think that's real positive. Let's go to the phones and talk to Tom in Gainesville. Hey, Tom, how you doing? Good morning, everybody. Good morning. Jo. Jo Jo always always bring me up a little bit. And if you're gonna make it to 110, I wish you the best on your recovery job. If you're gonna make it to 110 with your attitude, and I'm surprised I'm still around mine. Anyway. That's not why I called. I called about Bill Gates. Not not because of his unfortunate family situation, which is always always ashamed, But I called about his not pie in the sky. But chalk left in the sky notion that we're gonna stop the sun from heating up the urine and put a damper on global warming by doing that now we all know that plant. Bob Oxygen. Things you missed if you have to go to bed before closing out the joint session here's Barry Black Chaplain of United States Senate with the final prayer use us. Bring healing. And unity. Who are hurting and divided nation and world. Thank you. Well what you have blessed our lawmakers to accomplish. In spite of threats to liberty, the vice president made a statement to those who wreaked havoc in our capital today. You did not win. Violence never wins. Freedom winds. This is still the people's house and then nearly 15. Hours after the session opened, vice president Pence announced the tally that made it official 306 to 2 32. Votes for president of the United States are as follows. Joseph R. Biden Jr. Of the state of Delaware has received 306 votes. Donald J. Trump with the state of Florida has received 232 votes. The announcement of the state of the vote. The president of the Senate. Shall be deemed of sufficient declaration of the person's elected president and vice president of the United States each for the term beginning on the 20th day of January. 2021 that was the tally of votes. Final tally of injuries came from the acting. Metropolitan Police chief, Robert Continue to Wednesday night news briefing. He spoke about the department's police officers who were injured. When that mob reached the capital at least 14 MPD officers have sustained injuries during the demonstrations. One member suffered serious injuries after he was pulled into a crowd and assaulted. He is currently hospitalized, undergoing testing for treatment for his injuries. One officer received significant facial injuries from being struck by projectile and is also Hospitalized. The additional injuries are not a serious in nature but are nonetheless concerning and four people died during the protest kind of the Metro D. C. Police. One woman shot by police and three others died as result of medical emergencies. California Congressman Mike Thompson is now among a growing number of business and civic leaders and lawmakers who on President Trump removed from office either by invoking the 25th amendment. Or by impeachment. We need to do everything we can to make sure he doesn't do any more harm to our country. It seems as though he's trying to burn down the institution of representative government on his way out the door and just as a refresher constitutional expert David Becker, explaining that would work the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet. Beside the president is unable to perform his duties as president, they transmit a letter to the president, pro temporary of the Senate. At that point, the vice president becomes president until and unless the vice president himself submits a letter saying he is indeed able to perform his duties. Then, at that point the president can continue on or the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet can continue with another letter, saying he's unable to perform his duties, in which case this would go to Congress for a vote, and it would need two thirds of the vote in each house of Congress. And there might actually be bipartisan support for something like that at this time. Publican. Wyoming representative Liz Cheney says the president was clearly responsible for what happened to have for the first time in the history of the nation of president who refuses to leave office and concede after.
