"They've got a great offense, a line coach Bill Cal and who's been great everywhere he's been. So if there's one thing they can lean on the season running game and so being that the bengals probably aren't as good of a team as the ravens since they can keep that game close and they can keep feeding those war daddy's in the backfield. Nick. Chub bream hunt. I think that really gives Baker. Up Much better opportunity for success because the thing that Baker's GonNa do best in my opinion is he's a guy that throws the football very accurately when he's on the move when he's out of the pocket. So those bootlegs those play actions that this offense. is a huge staple of can be really good for Baker. But you gotta be in a situation where you honestly can run the football because you need to make defense respect the play action that's where you get that separation and you get the space in the secondary to deliver the football and so that's what I'm. I'm optimistically going to expect from this game effective running game Baker. Mayfield getting a high percentage of play action passes and completing high percentage of those and. Getting those players and ball the playmakers. Obviously you got Odell wh why? Why can't we see the? Oh, the connection like Kyla Murray play just one game with the Andre Hopkins, another other different receivers but they're also they're also Odell is a first rate A. Plus playmaker in the National Football League is proven to be why don't we see that? Why don't we see the ten catches Y- Y Y we didn't come out of the game with Carl Amaury Against San Francisco same. Boy He's just trying to force it in there, and that's the reason why they're not connecting. He just keeps trying to force the what why why do we keep hearing this? What's going on? I don't get paid enough to answer all the questions. I I wish. I wish I was standing here saying. Collar Mary Baker Mayfield they they delivered to their man Cooley in week one I mean that would be great but it just didn't happen and I. The only thing I can say is Baker. Just didn't have the confidence and he was afraid to make mistakes he played about to lose. He played dot to throw an interception because. I it seemed like he felt a little bit of pressure. He felt the pressure of the season, right? Everybody knows the third year for quarterback is huge because teams have to make a decision about that fifth year option and they either pick it up. And you're the man and they might do a long term deal or sometimes they just let you play out and then all of a sudden it becomes potentially a quarterback controversy right? They bring in other quarterbacks to compete, and then it's not your job to lose anymore and so you know it seemed like Baker played a little bit not to. Lose and I. Hope that a week to kind of reflect on that and realize that that's not how it gets the best version of himself out. We see that Baker Mayfield from year one or just a gun singer. He's letting rip he's confident and throws because it's got the playmakers you throw it up del adults healthy again this year I think everybody. All six thousand fans in that stadium tonight I seem Cleveland to good if that's a fifty fifty ball with Odell and the defensive back at Odell, come down with nine out of ten of those. Let it rip. I guess and I guess that that fifth year option that's just another part of the backdrop and the minute I have left with you give me the Bengals of success story tonight that could actually send the browns into that Oh to a onto tailspin. What do he got? Two things Brown secondary banged up. They struggled last week Bengals got a lot of weapons that receiver Joe. Borough did a nice job throwing with five wide receivers on the field. So the big weakness right now in this game is GonNa be right tackle Bobby Hart and Myles Garrett Bobby got eaten up pretty good last week by Joey Bosa Myles Garrett same type of player how do you eliminate mile and how do you give your team and opportunity to take advantage of the weakness in the browns secondary well, one is going to be put five receivers on the field putting four receivers and tight end or or running back showing a lot of quick game but also run at Myles Garrett. If he's on the backside, he still fast and he's so quick. He's GONNA run plays down. He's GonNa make a Lotta Hay from the back side. But if he's on the front side of those run plays, they have an opportunity to get the old team there, and then maybe a little bit in the inside of that Brown's defense 'cause the linebacker core the. Browns little bit banged up there a little bit better run game than they are in the past game but I still think you soften things up by running at miles and then you put a bunch of receivers on the field and let Joe Borough go quick game outstanding food for thought, have a great broadcast and Joe. Thanks for the time brother will chat soon. Thanks, rich. Dad said Joe Thomas. Bacon himself. Nice career.

"Free Year. Come on now wait a minute. Your listeners don't understand that the way we see. It on the other side of the podium guy sit on the other side of the a commissioners on my lap. That's right. So I, have to listen to you guys banner and forth. Through the whole event, but but it is special. Just, like having Chris Berman at the enshrinement, which is really special. We've told craftsmen as long as you breathe, you can come the. And I feel the same way about you. Thank you David that that means a lot. I got the president and CEO of Pro Football Hall of fame here and One of the things that you're so excellent David is is realizing the moment step can be created and that how fans can feel in those moments because we feel like we're there. Okay like that's that's what you're talking about about that jacket dinner. That's what you're talking about about everything to do with the festival that is the pro football hall of fame and your your bringing into ushering in the the class. By knocking on their doors at the Super Bowl where they're stationed in their rooms waiting for that, knock on the door and the video of you knocking on the door and seeing the moment that these guys are informed by you that they are now football immortal is amazing wh. When did you come up with that concept? Walked me through that David I'll pay my first year here we did decide to bring all the eighteen finalist. Back to the Super Bowl, which was in New York that year. New York New Jersey the honor show was going to be at the radio city. Music. Hall and we went along as we normally do on selection Saturday and I started calling people when I called Michael Strahan because he was living in New York. And on the other side of town, we had to Russia over then they call Derrick. Brooks because Derek was a friend of mine before I got this job and I just want to tell my buddy he was in the hall of fame. And then they called the Punter Ray guy from Oakland. And Ray had been eligible for twenty nine years. And not gotten the call or what we would say now is the knock. and. He almost didn't answer because I marry a code seven four as you know, instead of three, three zero and he you know he did and that's a great day baker the new president of the hall of fame. And then he said Yes sir and that slow southern. Mississippi. Draw and I. Said Ray. It is my great pleasure and with that I could hear him drop the phone I could hear him fall to the ground. His wife Sandy is going honey baby are you okay and this goes on for like two minutes and I think Oh my God I've killed my first hall. and. He got to his speed after about two minutes, which is you know you know several airtime, Michael, Irvin's. Feel more than two minutes doing last week for you. But you know two minutes is a long time and he got up in many said Hey Mr President I'm sorry he's as just want you to know I don't think I understood until now how much this meant to me? And you know my thought was man we gotta let fancy that the up. And since then we've kind of been on this journey of you know you know again I love knocking on the door of Kurt Warner because having been commissioned arena football at mental to me But I've every one of them cries you know Jerry Kramer. WHO WAITED FORTY FIVE YEAR For. Goodness. Sakes and and when that happens what is absolutely incredible. Riches. And you've seen this I think some of your interviews, but for this special moment. you know Jerry Jerry Jones had his family and side. He's got eight billion dollars and this was something money couldn't buy. They're going nuts. But at that moment when you tell them, they're all crying. they're not thinking about how much money they made. They're not thinking about their records, their rings or their Lombardi's I guarantee you You know we we walked on the set there and CBS, for Bill Cowher and the next day. Johnson. Yes, and I guarantee you the Jimmy. Johnson was thinking about his mother I, absolutely know it I. Think about their dad wouldn't let him quit or their coach that encouraged them to do more teammate that sacrifice to get him into the hall and it's a special moment. It's. There are so many moments like that. When you knock on the door when you give them the jacket when they unveil their bust when we presented their hall of Fame Ring of Excellence in the fall in for their stadium you know John. Stallworth, had the great line when you put that jacket on me, it was like all the history of the League. Surrounded me from the day I. Leave up a Pigskin to the presentation of that lasts Lombardi and it's it I. Think it actually has a significant impact on them and and you know a lot of our hall of famers are your friends. You know like Terrell or Michael and. I've seen guys you know frankly Randy Moss. It changes every one of their lives instead of being. Somebody who played the game they are now a yell the him, the absolute ambassador the best there's ever been in this game you know there've been about three, hundred, thirty million that have played the game five million college. tomorrow night tonight. Sorry we will unveil Twenty five thousand, four, hundred, Eighty, eight names and Centennial Plaza of those who played the game professionally in the first year of the NFL. But there's only three hundred and twenty six right now in the hall of fame, there's only one hundred, seventy, six living goal jackets. So this is really a leak company and and what I love about what we do rich here. I really don't think about the the worship of football he rose and I don't even think it's about the worship of the game. Of Football. But every one of these guys you know and you know them, well, they did not fall out of bed grade they fought to be great. They persevered to be great and they're not perfect people you know for them being great was not coming out your nose and blood coming out of your mouth and and fighting for every yard to be great. But I think we can learn from that had to be a better father or a better mother better company or community, and maybe right now a better country So we call it the Church of football here in Canton Ohio. And it's a, it's a wonderful place to be David Baker pro football hall of fame President and CEO. We are having this conversation I know the NFL one, hundred season was last year. But today is, in fact, the day one, hundred years ago the NFL was born. This is the one hundredth birthday of the NFL today as you and I are talking the twenty first century however his hit a canton. Walk me through. A couple of minutes we have left here about the improvements you mentioned about than centennial ceremony that you're having tonight I know that you've got the draft coming to Cleveland in twenty twenty one as well. Walk me through what you've got David Well I'll tell you tonight what we're. GonNa do the good people can't know how the NFL does a lot for a lot of cities but I can't think of any city that does more for the NFL than can't know how and they raise twelve and a half million dollars themselves. To memorialize the first century of the NFL, which started right here in Canton on September seventeenth of nineteen twenty, exactly one hundred years ago from today with ten teams came together They elected a native American and maybe one of the best athletes ever walked the face of the Earth Jim Thorpe to be their president and you know that became the NFL to what it's going to be today. So in this award winning park that will unveil tonight at halftime of the bingles browns game. you know there are monuments to every city to every hole NFL team to dating in racine and Providence But like I also said there are there are. Pillars for every decade that have the name of twenty, five, thousand, four, hundred, and eighty, eight players every single player. If you played it down in the.

I'd like to ask if you'd consider retiring in Miami or Florida for that matter after spending some time in the Sunshine State now I hate Florida Anna. I don't hate Florida but it does turn your body into just like a humidity tent step outside arizona-based Super Bowl by far I've had a gas. Yes no I mean. I haven't seen the sun really but yeah scruple you went to the beach. Hank must be nice couple times. Hank would you retire in Florida. Sure Yeah I don't I don't have a problem with Florida. Humid Smash Right. Yeah what's the better deal by two for for the price of one or buy one get one free to price our To for the two for the price of one because it sounds like it's more because you've got the number two in there and the number one Yeah yes also when you to buy one get one free if you're getting let's say two pairs of like the same shirt or like the same shirt and you're getting two of them you get the first one first of all. Don't buy that shirt right doing a buy one. Get One free shirt shirt. That's what I'm saying. So if you buy a shirt and you pay for the shirt. And they're like oh here's another one. That's second shirt. Even though it's the exact same feels like a piece of shit right. I guess a bad shirt shirts by giving me the shirt two for the price of one. It's just like oh they're both on sale right right happy birthday to birthday cat and old but still kickin. NPF T- since you are both of legal age to run for president. What would the first thing you would do in office as the president of the United States probably put a cigar an entrance vagina? Nice Nice Nice. That's usually could stuff to do. Yes the Oval Office Sue Rule Monday is a national holiday. Done also no no more taxes. That's going to be a challenge bad. We'll figure it out later. No more taxes for me. Yeah which I've just been abusing only using the points to do like massages and relaxation stuff But I think I'm probably going to get. I'm going to try to get a six pack at some point. I have a question it can. You have a midlife crisis. If you've already accepted that you're midlife like I don't I don't really go out. I don't do any of that stuff. So I don't know is that am I eligible for midlife crisis. Yes I I feel like midlife crisis when you keep trying to chase it trying to be the young guy basically for the next fifteen years any crisis you can have it can make a midlife crisis and technically but you know what I'm saying like I don't but you you might chasing an early. I don't WanNa be young anymore right now. No I rea- I don't WanNa be on but that could change but but when you gordy stop going out less than zero. Yeah if you start going out more than going out zero so you start going out once a week. Midlife crisis become the club got got it got it. Okay I think about this understood. I don't think I'm going to have that happen. We could die. That's the point we get potentially morrow right and so that would mean that are midlife crisis. Already happened when we were seventeen years old right and so like our midlife crisis is I WANNA get a high school degree right. And that's what I did from my midlife crisis and bought a minivan hank after hearing that Andy actually last too. Many many are calling age age. Thirty five the baby back bitch here. Is this year. Hey boys would you guys walk the Bachelor but instead of people picking their soulmate is just still rivers I deciding who is favoured kid is of course it sounds like the best television program and it's probably going to be the one with the biggest arm yes absolute just the best athlete is his favourite. The actually this is how Phil River should decide is next team. He should have all his kids. where a t shirt for like anyone who's interested in them and just throw the ball up like it's the fourth quarter and he's down a score and whoever intercepts it that's team he goes? It's like Ed his wedding. When he's throwing the bouquet he stands tosses it over his head and they fight fight for right? I liked perfect. No He's got through real and run around it. Stop around in panic. Okay and then throw it up and then whoever gets it it. You're going to that team Phil. And then he has to put a garter belt on the kid that catches it. I hope is in it for Phil. It's not phil addicted again. As we've said on the show oh he is going to be faced with the choice of staying at home with nine kids and having more sex more kids are going to work and getting a break from those nine kids. "Four pound yorkie. Yeah Yeah Yeah. It's almost lost his life several times when I got up to go to the bathroom in the milk and I saw Christopher what is your favorite most obscure scare item in the hall of fame. My thing you walk by and you always stop and maybe look a little bit more so not hall of Famer but an item. I always interested like cleats cleats. Football's however goes. You know I think for me I mean I mean we've got stuff there you know Tom Brady got in trouble. Able for deflating all right. Okay let me too. Paul Brown Hall of fame coach. He had a ball warmer. That looks like this pineapple thing that you put the ball in right so the his quarterback would have a warm ball on cold days. There is enormous stuff there like I said six million picture forty million dollars and a ton of stuff right but I would tell you seriously. My favorite place is the gallery. Yeah I mean. There's a lot of nights that I'm leaving work in. It'll be midnight. Yeah and nobody's there and I'll walk through those bronze Boston coach Madden. They're important in your company and what you do so that's what I love about it I'm I'm I'm getting paid for doing something that I really love. This is why he's actually going to be in. The hall of fame is because the question was. Do you ever picture yourself the whole fame and you just went on to describe all the great qualities of the people that are in the hall of fame in football. And how much you love you. That's that answer very. He's saying why you shouldn't be in the whole fame was actually the best campaign ad that you could ever be in the hall right in my only last my last question was going to be. That's the sort of Larry a little bit. Because he was he was very very good. Sixty percents he's very very maybe. Is there an the animal wing of the hall of fame for so for example. If swagger to the new Brown's dog I think he's still undefeated at home if he ends his career undefeated at home. I feel like there should be an animal wing. You know what We we have talked at one point in time about having other hall of fame there we do have the Ford Hall of fans. It's okay so on Friday. I will also knock on the door of one of the three finalists Z.. Hotel I'm fifteen. Yeah I'm fourteen but we can. We can be in the room open. I'll keep it open. Let's see it is Tampa Bay Stephen J o they guy with a big nut or whatever's wrong these are always guys who you'd recognize course art to different stuff but the guy who won last year Where from Pittsburgh Miami and from Chicago? Okay actually pick three that first year. What about it? But there's a Ford Hall of fans that is very very I love that. What about the Seattle Seahawk? You know him the guy that sits in a row. I don't think he was a nominated this year but all those guys participate in. What's the process? Just like. Who's the best fan or is there like a community service? Only it's online and you can see bleep. It out. I think they vote on it. Say One more time we'll bleep it again bleacher report. Interpreters I actually. You're speaking of different hall of fame. "That's nice that isn't complement of every minute. I got butterflies in my head. You're on anyway. We talk about you for knock on my own door congratulations. PFC Thank you fifty. You didn't play football because you were quote to literally too big to play football. Yeah and what does that mean you were. You were a great basketball player. He played in college in prose where they weighed you to play football as a kid. Okay Okay and when I was eight or ten years old you know about. PF and eight ear all day and they would have put me with You know with fifteen year old right But I we kinda corrected this and the next generation with both my kids leads right. Sam played in the NFL. The three time all American Asi and Ben Played both in high school in Summit. Do can and and But I've always leaves love football. The most basketball got me to college. Right for me I it's important because we all come from someplace. Yeah you know for me. My Mom and dad couldn't read a right and if it wasn't for sports I wanNA gone to college. Oregon Law. School had the opportunity to play around the world. And I certainly wouldn't certain with guys like you here probably downgrade. Yep and you know. We're sitting in a pretty special place. I love that story though because you are. You know the guy who's basically in charge of the history of the game you're the president. CEO Hall of fame. And you love football from everything. I've read more than pretty pretty much. Anyone who's ever walked this earth and you play but that almost as poetic and perfect because that's how much you love it. That's kind and I appreciated. Did I do love it and again what I love about sports and this may be a serious topic for you guys know but what I I'll tell you what I care about it is. There are so many lessons you can learn from sports. Yeah I got the greatest job in the world because I'm hanging with some of the best football players in the world but I've learned that they're pretty good people and the game isn't just for those guys who have a bronze bust or those guys who got paid for it like my son The game is for guys who become firemen and soldiers. There's an police officers and fathers and respectfully you know when your life is you know screwed up and every one of us are at some point. Okay when your life is screwed up you don't go back to your chemistry teacher. You're calculus teacher for life advice but I'll tell you almost all of us go back to that coach and I really really believe that. It's because that coach teaches you how to keep going when you don't think you can or can't so I love this because there are so it's it's it's great football and man. I love football But I don't love it as much as John Madness or some of the other guys that I've been with I mean that's here they You Know Bill Belichick Bill Check on our Blue Ribbon Committee okay. And he said it was one of the best days of his career. This guy with eight rings you know talking talking about you know being at the hall of fame on that day. Making history by selecting the centennial. Class these guys love the game right and and to me. It's it's It's a fun game to be with your friends to scream and yell to cheer for your team to drink a beer but there are so many wonderful wonderful lessons in it and it's done. It's a lot for me. Sports has done a lot for me. It's a lot for my two boys right and I hope that I and we can get back to it. Yeah so you've been all over. TV The last couple of weeks. You surprised bill calories apprised Jimmy Johnson. The waterworks started to flow. You were saying there were so it was great because you got to see them in the moment where they realized. And it'll hit them like the culmination of my career is that I'm amongst US elite group and you've got to see that that reaction the action just from looking at you and you've kind of you've been famous over the years for like we said you're knock on the door. That's what happens that Saturday before the Super Bowl right you go around you tell everybody Eddie. Congratulations made it. I'm wondering if there's one person who's door you may have knocked on. That was more memorable than the others whether it's for a strange reason or for something that spoke not you know that's like asking me which one of my kids do. I love the most. Actually let me ask you that if the kid that went to USC or the kid that went to Duke son been says. I love him most. I love them both the same okay but I will tell you a PFC it it's I learned a lot my first year. We didn't have time to knock on the. You're so we had to call guys. We had to get across Newark to Radio City Music Hall where they were going to be revealed again life to the nation so I called Michael Strahan first. Because he was Eddie's house Then Call Derrick Brooks because I knew Derrick Brooks. I considered him a buddy. Wanted to give some news to good buddy my third one Mr Ray guy. Punter Bene- finalists twenty. Nine years he'd been eligible and My Area Code on my phone seven four from Orange County so it's not three. Oh from Ken He. He almost didn't answer but fortunately I don't like the fifth ring he did. And he's got this great southern Mississippi draw and he said Yes sir and I said hey ray this Dave Baker on the new president the hall of fame. I'd been there two months. said he said Yes sir and I said I just WanNa tell you that it is my great pleasure and I got that far and I could hear ear him fall to the floor. His phone is rattling around his wife. Saying honey baby are UK. And I thought I killed my first hall of Famer I I am. Yeah but it was like two minutes. One thing you can't do. It was two minutes to get him up. And and which is longtime when you're trying to get somebody on the Air Radio City music easy call and it occurred to you man you know we need to let fancy how important this is and so from there you know and knocked on-drove medicine store four and he got he got he. There've been a couple of times that he hadn't made it so he got tired of waiting and felt he didn't make it again and he left in the main game. The door I told you a a little bit about Brett farve right yeah. Kurt Warner was special for me. Because I'd been commissioning Rena Football League You know But Ron woolfe was an interesting guy because He came to the door Yeah thank goodness. And he had A. We was resplendent with Thai issues resigned assigned But he didn't WanNA wrinkle pants. They were hanging over a chair. And so I had this camera crew with me like your guys here and I said I said Hey Ron. I got good news and bad news. The good news is you're in the hall of fame. You're going to Ken as the bad news is you're on national. "Bud Light Seltzer. It is unquestionably unquestionably. Good that's a hell of a tagline unquenched. Don't even think about asking me if bud light sensors good because you can't it's unquestionably good. And now Dave Dave Baker White Pork raspberries have a bluish purplish hue so white raspberries Bark raspberries evident. Never did you do an image search. No I just I literally google do blue raspberries exist and this is a blowout. That's crazy the white bark raspberry mind blown anathema. Something completely different. Okay we now. Oh come on a very very very special guest I it is the president and CEO of the pro football hall of fame. David Baker. You know him he is the one who knocks we're GONNA get and all of that but before we start I want to read The business card. You gave us a business card almost instantly which that's a classy move because you're like like hey I feel like I'm a friend for life if I ever get in trouble. I'm going to give you a call. Well that's that's good for free admission to the pro football hall of Fame Bitch. Oh I thought it was just like this. I'm David Baker. Here's my here's you let me know when you're coming we'll roll out okay. Perfect so fuck you on the back. It says honor the heroes of the game preserve service history promote its values celebrate. Excellence everywhere so can you explain how you guys came up with this mission statement and what it means means the mission statement is something that drives every decision that we try to make the football team and it's not always easy but to honor the heroes of the game Not only the pro football overhaul famers but every guy who ever played in the NFL has an archive and that archive can be added to So it's not just the three three hundred twenty six guys who have a bronze bust. It's all those other guys. Twenty seven thousand guys who played and we can talk about that in a second to To preserve its history. We got six million pictures forty forty million documents that preserve the game And then it's to promote its values. It's not just about the worship of the football hero or even the worship the game of football but you know we as fans take every one of these guys fell out of bed great. Not One of them did right There's not a guy in the hall of fame whose quarterback didn't yeah throw a lot of incompletions or running back through fumbled the ball or linemen. Who missed a blocker defensive? Guys that MS tackle These guys had earned their greatest. They had to fight for it. They had overcome adversity. And it's really about the values that they use the you know the they are truly truly committed people they persevere they don't give up they They're disciplined their diligence. And how do they use those values to drag a lot of other people to greatness And then lastly usually at celebrating excellence. Everywhere you know when you look at the life of Of Roger Staubach you know or a bill cower Jimmy Johnson who just made it in with the Blue Ribbon Committee You know you may not be a hall of fame coach or Hall of fame quarterback But you know those same values can help us learn how to be a better dad. Better Mom Or a better you know broadcasts professional or thank you. That was very nice you it can also help us learn how to be a better community and country. I want a lot of lessons. From Brett farve about how to become better at the Internet Notably like it doesn't matter how many times screw up as long as you succeed like one or two more times than you screwed up. You could be a hall of fame or anything look. Look what got you here fifty. Yeah I mean it's incredible but I I will tell you you know. Brett was one of those guys when we selected his class. It was ten hours of work with all of our elite media selectors. Who really work hard on this? They all your long But it took ten seconds for him to be selected. I turned to the Green Bay Kazak. They were supposed to give his presentation and I said the next. You know Finalist is Brett Brett Farve and I turn to the guy from the green break that he says. Hey I've got a presentation but you really want it. Yeah and I kind of paused looked at the room so now let's move on it's spread far. That's that's interesting so I I did not know this as part of the selection process. There's a media organization that is assigned to make your case for you. Almost they're a trial attorney trying to convince jurors it starts with the presentation of five minutes for those guys and we didn't even hear the one for Brett but when I knocked on his door He knew I was GONNA knock on his door. I knew before I ever came to that city. I was GONNA knock on his door but when I told him he was one of the three hundred and two best players coaches and contributors others to ever play the game at that time. I I gotTa Tell Ya. He stuck his hands in his pocket like a ten year old kid and he just hung his head and and the word I would express wish humility. Yeah he knew the shoulders he stood upon. Even if you're Brett Farr right and and and then if I could big cat yeah we take over the honor show. Our our guys were in the audience who are hall of Famers Walk Up on stage and shake his hand We then have a press conference afterwards and he happens to be next to me as we started and I said how you you're doing he goes are you kidding he is. I just shook the hand of Roger Staubach and I would've thought these guys played golf day and he said No. You don't understand all my in life. I dreamed of being Roger Staubach right and he paused for saying he goes. Hey I guess I'm on his team now right right right and I said forever. It's pretty and so so it's a IT'S A. It's a great moment when that happens. I mean that's fantastic because it is like you know every single generation the generation before then they looked up to the guys that were there and then they join them so I just want to really quickly go back to how the actual selection goes down. Because I think it's fascinating so you guys are all room. It's fifty people right. Forty eight forty forty eight hundred elite selector elite selectors And you have people come up make the case so you whittle it down from a pool of how many to choose really every year it. This is a different. Because it's the centennial writer and we're having twenty for twenty twenty But most years it'll be eighteen finalists okay. Generally that's a a a senior and contributors that make up three and then it is players and coaches who make up the other fifteen finalists right and the seniors seniors and coaches You know kind of go out on their own And then when we get to that fifteen you go from fifteen to ten. And then you kind of whittle it down to five and now what is that room like our people. Arguing is the greatest sports debate of all time like complaining about the coffee. Yeah it seems like a fascinating place to be well Listen we we've learned a long time ago the way to get elite media there is food. Yes okay so for you guys today but no I think it gets. It's one of those things Pf Peter King told me that he does a ton and twenty interviews all year round just to prepare for that one day and and we've got guys like John Clayton and Sal paolantonio and Jerry Bell from USA Today. And these guys take it. I wish fans could see. Yeah how seriously they take it it and most of them say that it's the most important day of their year. Well an knowing how much NFL fans love the NFL. I think we should probably put it in unlike the middle of April and make it a TV show. Well listen we. You know we had to watch it. WH- where they had the whole editorial board. Sit Down they put it. That'd make it very well I'll tell you there's things that we're looking at in the future. That might be a little bit different right but I I will tell you these guys you know. I didn't get this the job just because I'm smart and good looking Got Four hundred pounds and you need big Guy who to run this meeting giving any back to have the best knock of all time. I think that was really just resume right. He's a piece of wood here DOT COM. That's he can. Do you mind.

"Know not might be I mean we have. I think we have the panthers. Yeah yeah well speaking of questions at you you know we try to always ask questions may not get asked by every other interview Would you like to to use this time to apologize for skipping the Sun Bowl. That's the greatest question I ever got. Don KNAPP said that it set a bad message for the kid bad message for the kid out. So would you. I have seen shouldn't say things like that when you have like a history. Wake not good things. I won't go that far but you know yeah I apologize to everybody the cavs I apologize to the kids. What's actually like you to apologize directly to apologize for missing the sun go ahead? What's your son's name? It's little cat. We call little cat little born yet but now born absurd. Absurd to see you this little. Okay I'm so sorry that I can't explain enough how apologetic I am for for missing the symbol. You know if I could do it again and I will replay assemble just for little. I'm actually GonNa hold you pass. Oh Yeah I am actually upset. You skip the Sun Bowl because the sun bowl is the famous Game that Ryan Pace went and watch Mitch trubisky and was like Damn they lost the Stanford. I got a draft. This guy played. You might have have been drafted by the bears. History might have been different. You're absolutely right and that's my fault. Yeah that's because you might have fallen behind by a lot more points. And and Mitch would have tried to press a little bit receptions right and then they would decision by me do you. Do you feel like a little slighted that everyone talks about who pass on Patrick Mahomes or does Shawn Watson and that drafted not who Christian McCaffrey. Now I mean I I I get that from me. Like man. They picked Christian McCaffrey instead of PAT. Mahomes that's terribly unhappy with her. I mean I. It's hard to complain. You go eight you know obviously your competitor and you want to be the first pick. But I couldn't go into a better organization. Great Charlotta Bass. I'm not just saying that either so I like Charlotte. I went to a great team. You know with Guy I got guys like Olsen on the team or I gotta come into the League and Learned from him hanging out with him. So it's been good things worked out pretty well for you overall. Yeah and I. I grew up a redskins fan. We got you know Ron Rivera now up there. I'm actually very very excited. I'd kind of the redskins have had a mutual parting of ways over the last five years. Let's put it that way but now I'm actually reinvigorated because I believe in that guy. I think you know when when he left the panthers everything you heard on his way out was nothing but admiration and And glowing praise. So can you convince me that the redskins are going to super super bowl. Well I think when when you know you you said it. Best when he left. I mean the Carolinas. Were you know just thankful that you got some time with them. And he's is a great leader. Great Coach He's got a great staff and he's a winner you know I mean the the League is such a revolving door I mean. No one lasts forever and You know it's very rare at least so you know when I think about coach of your I think of a great leader who's consistent You Know He. He's not afraid to to put the hammer down. You know when needed which I think is something that you know in. The League is much as it's needed a lot more than you know people think so He's a great coach. He's obviously got a lot in the Carolinas staff going onto him and I'm excited to just except for when we planned but all the other games. Yeah so your your whole family. Incredible athletes like your. Obviously your dad played in the the. Nfl Your brothers are incredible. Athletes your brother. Who is a quarterback at Michigan Dylan? Yeah see in love with football. He loves football the ball he loves football. He's in love with coach Harbaugh. Yeah he's a good friend of ours and he is sniff mouth. He's going to sniff them out on. He's he said so. Dylan's been there three years now. Okay so he harb on him or close obviously so I hope I hope he's the guy hope that You know they can finally get over that Little Hump of Ohio State and and go from there but yes. He's in love with football. Do you think you would have been able to make in the NBA. It's tough man. I mean unbelievable basketball player and he played all the sports. Yeah I'd have been a great ten th Man D. League player Sam. You're the best defense is spent. We need a foul Yup. I'm in we need someone to maybe turn it over but probably not a man Did you get recruited to play. I mean who Northern Colorado Actually where my Dad's coaching now okay. They recruited me to play. I was GONNA play football and basketball. You know wasn't wasn't going to but they asked me to see us you and then Detroit Fun. Okay I think you meet the right choice. So Yeah Yeah so yeah recruited some highlights and you were just I mean you have obviously incredible athleticism thrown down. Yeah Damn I may because it's tough though the guards are six five in the NBA. The point guard so I I would have been uh an anomaly. I'd like to see the dunk over. The goalpost is a celebration one time because how that would surprise a lot of people yeah. Maybe I'll do that next year. I'll have to be early in the year when the legs are a little fresher though the first game when you have a lead. Because I think it's a penalty now fourth quarter. The legs are pretty gas though. You know it's a lot of volume through beginning. I might have to be a tone sadder I you know I series touchdown I like that. Yeah I think that might have to apply like that. He's as little multiple choice for you. Would you describe yourself more as a gym rat. A Ham eggs guy sneaky athletic or coach on the field tough gym rat gym rat. I one last one leave. Yeah that's a big big Jim Raga. Ah I've always wondered about the first in last out guys because eventually have two of them on the same team. Now there's only one and what point is it too much at. What point do you get there too early really like? I'd rather sleep the extra thirty minutes and be you know what I mean right. I think that's a that's more old school now. I actually love to sleep and I love to do my process but if my process Ossis now is over I go home Chris McCaffrey Lazy Narrative. Questions offseason heightened voted really. Tell you that they didn't vote because they just didn't watch your plan. That's true story. There's face men my my my mother's right next to me at a dinner heisman dinner. And you're just like sorry I had to I go. I got to know if I should have gone to the deal but yeah I don't know that's wild store. Yeah all right one last question. It's kind of a stupid question. But how do you get your traps to look so awesome. I think traps are genetic honestly fuck or like I wanted you like all right. Here's the ask. Yeah I've got twenty minutes in the gym now. I don't know I mean I think you know do do like cleans. I think that might get the under trap. Workout don't focus solely on the on the trap. Graf okay dead lifts big lead. Lift a bag of chips from the yeah. It's fine chips and then picking you know you'd better get worse. Stay the same well like that. Getting better getting worse football. Is there anyone your failure. It's not athletic. That's my last question. No because I hear such good athletes that just shows up to a family dinner and it was like. Hey I'm doing crosswords now. I mean no we all play. Yeah I would have rather play. Obviously I play in little brothers. Both play football. I played multiple sports. We got lucky. We had hit the gene pool. which was which was nice? Fortunate do you ever. Did you call John. elway uncle John. I do not call John John. Never even when you're never call him Meikeljohn. Okay all right. Well Chris McCaffrey. Thank you very much. Appreciate it Go check out verizon. Do Community Service. It's going to be a lot. We're busy doing service till next football to quit. My personal favorite flavor Black Cherry. I Love Black Cherry anything. I don't is Black Cherry. An actual fruit or is it just a flavor nature. Yes Black Cherry. Uh of course. Okay because I know that Blue Raspberry is not found in nature. I don't think I noticed that one is soon. Okay well. I'm an idiot when it comes to fruit. "And save five dollars off with you with code. PMT Okay here. He is Christian. McCaffrey okay we now. Welcome on very special guest. It is running back from the Carolina Panthers Christian McCaffrey. He's here with horizon. First Question I have to ask you. You're doing doing the one more Sunday campaign with horizon and here's what the campaign is. PF T they want us to use all the time we watched football and then use that time for volunteer services community service in the off season. Do you realize how much you guys are going to be out of a job. I don't think we have enough time to volunteer. With how much football not only do I watch the Games. I grind tape all twenty two junkie on a break that down. So that's yeah that's like eighty hours a week. I'm I mean after you're GONNA have to open up your off season right so my other verizon question is you. Are you now in charge of getting us. Good Cell Service in every single stadium. Yes that's my job so we can tweet to you. People came to me with any of your verizon questions now okay that was a bad mistake. So you're GONNA pay for that one we'll have we'll have all business pete escalate or Chris. If you can't get service so can we call you a future hall of Famer. I wouldn't wouldn't say that you can I you know I don't know if I'll I'll agree. I mean I was looking through it like you. Now you you're twenty three years old. Now you have Most receptions by a running back in one game most receptions by running back in the season three guys to do a thousand yards receiving a thousand yards rushing in your twenty three. I think your future hall of Famer appreciate this so say everyone that's helped start. Let's start introducing myself. You are a Swiss army knife but the big question is how quickly can you decipher text from Cam. Newton takes a minute. I have to go see translation on the on the instagram feed. But I ended up getting done It's tough you know. It's another language that that I don't know how he understands it but he makes do with it. You know. That's his thing. Have you ever watched them like type. It out I've never seen a lot. I think he's keyboards set to to that To that whatever call it so he he's types normally but it comes out the way you know it comes out. Yeah Yeah we're friends with Greg. Olsen he said that he thinks a lot of the reason why he gets passes is because he can decipher. What can anyone exactly? That's why he's been in a league. So the only reason greg estate leaks because Have you met and talked with your new coach. I have yeah okay I talked with Taco coach rule talk coach. Brady a little bit I'm really excited. And I think those guys are you know you look at the history of turning teams around who have been struggling and Coach will what he did at Temple. What he did at Baylor and I think I honestly think we got the right guys to do that to you? Know we need a lot of guys step up but we got a good young bunch mixed with some veteran guys so should be good. Did you bring up the fact that be spit on himself in the ball game. I didn't even see that clip. That's news to me. Oh we need to write on these actually said we like Matt Rule. We think he's a great coach in. NFL owner when you see him on yourself. That's awesome off the next year to have him but right basic basic things myself. All the time Matt Drool ear off when you talk. Did you get to meet him. Face to face face face wearing Kerak he wasn't wearing a smock. Change it right. I think he said he's retiring Smith. I hope he I hope it makes. It makes a comeback. I'm a fan of the smart to be. Yeah me too here we go. Oh it's bad he's pick directly on himself like right down and I think it was indoors doors to wasn't a wind something down. He's dehydrated stressed for that game. That's for sure. Thick spit superstar is working hard. I can respect. I gotTa have a serious question. You have always wondered about you. Know when when teams changed ownership the actual who'll like day to day stuff that impacts the athletes. Like how 'cause I always figure it out you go about your job you've got you know the things that you need to work on that you know when you go in there does. Is there like a palpable all sense in a building win. New owner takes charge. I think You know I I only only know from you. Know the transition from Mr Richardson. Jason and Mr Teper And I would definitely say there was a new. There was definitely a new field in the building And anyone who knows Mr Teper knows that he is such a presence He wants to be a part of it He loves talking with the players. You know he loves being in an an and he is in and he's a guy who's not afraid to to make moves that he thinks things are going to help us win so as a players it's exciting because you know that He wants to be on the forefront of new technology new treatments You know he's building a new facility obviously done so much with our team already so from a player's perspective it does matter and it and it's really cool to see when you have an owner. He's like that. What about the The Shield at the fifty fifty yard line do you. Are you going to miss that. They change in the shield to I love the just Jones obsess over yeah we obsess. Richardson was he wanted to give respect to the league. Kept it as the shield at the fifty yard line. I like Yeah I mean you.

I could see the head I see out of the top which is a pretty cool look And he was giving me this hug like both hands full embrace race around my back and I was like. Hey Hey Joe I guess I guess you're on. MD May right now Joe Buck pacifier in his mouth. Joe Buck was tripping on Molly. Last night he had a candy necklace. Let's around his neck. He was shirtless. He's shorts on. Here's the whole thing with touch your face dude so awesome. You look good though it is this. This is definitely I feel like the most. CNBC in Super Bowl. We've had in five years Miami. Yeah Yeah right the the Miami vibe though. Everyone's let's hear you know what I mean. You don't skip the Miami Super Egypt the Minnesota Super Bowl. You don't skip the Miami superbowl so you just walk down. The street people everyone and celebrities everywhere and people going to the beach and not going to radio. Yeah listen I'm I'm very much enjoying the NFL like the shirts and stuff that they put out. I know we talked about earlier earlier this week. How I enjoy super bowl? Merchandise the shirts that they've got here Miami or fire like they are the pink. It's the green. It's the crazy eighties. Designs is on them. I'm going to go back with like a whole new order. That Shit kind of Candy Ass Little Bit Candy Aspirin. Guess what we're in Miami Jim Ryan during the coin flip. I hope not neither Joe Montana Tan who Dan Marino will get brought out there to flip rolled up one hundred dollar bill really tightly. That's really mean. Tim Reno is really good guy and I like Acre Lot. He's just so well adjusted like he loves life and Salad get to catch up a year. Later what the catch up. The the one year anniversary interview Dan Marino. Again and just type out the transcript and try to ask them the exact same questions in the same cadence. Are we see we get him to stay a little bit longer or we could do a table. Read with him of last year's interview might be actually better it definitely his answers will be would be better being able to read and we could change his name to like a different quarterback that he hates. Who Does Dan Marino? Hate every quarterback with a super bowl ring right that I'm trying to remember on CBS. When someone referred to Dilfer he shrink? Who Wears it? When they said Peyton? Manning might end up like a Dan Marino. Dan Marino was right there. Like what the Fox Hilson. So yeah. We'll we'll print up the transcript and have it instead of Dan Marino Safe Phil Simms for his lines and then at the end demery. It'll be like man that's still some sure an asshole right right that was you Dan. Yes the whole issue all all right. Let's get to our interviews. We've got a great interview with Christian McCaffrey. And then an all time with David Baker the largest man actually probably. Yeah probably the largest this guy we've ever had. not surprised I guess that he got in considering E. took it to a different level with TV contracts made a lot of money for the game took it into a different era yeah he's one of those it's like why do not in already yeah comic Marvin Miller yeah baseball I was a little bit surprised by that one or is it some other ones Donnie shall and and cliff tires are both a little bit before my time I I read you know I know the teams of Donnie shell played on a wood heater he was for the Steelers teams that were just absolutely spectacular are you know click Harris was a cowboy enough said so those two guys get in our let's run through a couple other ones he Jim covert I remember him with the bears as an offense of linemen I don't remember Bobby Dylan who was a D. back for the Packers Austin Dillon Tate today they made the right call Jack I was a beast yeah okay and we we was on the the body Packers of assuming yeah I'll wait like even before that it was like ten years before the merger all really okay yeah see played like late fifties and into the sixties mid fifties yeah okay all right so don't reach sixties they'll go back a little bit at New York Jets tackle Winston hill not that familiar with him but lions defensive tackle out Alex Karras who was a great player and also went on to be an actor he was in blazing saddles which Mike if you haven't seen it is an all time classic a movie that would never get made today because it's incredibly politically incorrect and he was the father in Webster which one of your favorite TV shows yeah Webster Webster and Bobby don't fill but Alex Karras is also said suspended for an entire season for gambling on football did you know that yeah early sixties yeah I miss the season are Scott Chicago cardinals this it tells you how far back that goes tackle Duke Slater goes into the hall of fame Cleveland Browns wide receiver Max speedy bears defensive and and sprinkle near giants GM George young who I remember he was a he was a guy who was there during the Parcells run when Bella check was it a says that when they had an unbelievable group of assistance there and he drafted very well guys like Phil Simms some guys really under the radar at large Taylor helped really kind of build that team cell George young goes and we know bill Cowher a Jimmy Johnson they they got their surprises on TV this past weekend what do you think of Calar I don't I think ours I don't think he's all famous hourly there I think is like the on this list of qualified to talk about this from worry lines up with my viewing yeah I you know I know he won one he got to another any was there a long time it's a great story because he's he's a Pittsburgh guy grew up there you know all that good stuff but what what's she in for longevity you know I mean I don't know I'm a a are they considering like contributions as a broadcaster to that kid I mean he's not that good only has been doing it that long what is your is on an hour a week yeah exactly yes I know it not look exactly are the interesting thing is that they they're some the hall of fame centennial class was selected by a special Blue Ribbon panel which included hall of fame board selectors league historians hall of Famers and bill Belichick yeah so there were thirty eight finalists were chosen from a list of three hundred nominees over the past five months and the hall of fame class of twenty twenty comprised of modern era players will be selected in Miami beach on February first the day before the Superbowl so you're wondering like the word the wise all these you know older guys well the the guys you probably saw play we you know we'll be getting in that cell that was that's the way that that that check out but shall I do go back to die shell for a minute now and I'll get to the reason why you wanted to do this for for a couple reasons but he's the fifth member of that steel curtain team Joe Greene mean Joe green Jack Lambert Jack ham Mel blunt and now dot a shell goes in from that Pittsburgh team but I am we should probably place for people again which we will little back but one of the coolest things I I heard was the the audio conversation between Harold Carmichael and and David Baker who's the the president of the pro football hall of fame but Carmichael goes and he was at all decade nineteen seventy selection when he retired he held the league record with a reception and a hundred twenty seven consecutive games he had a touchdown reception on almost fourteen percent of his career touches that's awesome any finishes his career with really good numbers in any near where you know again it wasn't like it is today where they pass as much as they did but in a plane thirteen years and really that's a little bit misleading you really play twelve years that thirteen year with the cowboys only played two games but he had almost nine thousand yards seventy nine touchdowns averaged more than fifteen yards per catch he was a stud and from nineteen seventy three to nineteen eighty two no receiver had more receptions yards touchdowns are games played that's pretty awesome do you wonder why it took that long but it was great to see him get and I'll tell you the other guy I mention this before we took time out they get send that never played a down in the NFL yet maybe had more of an impact than any name that we just right off that's the sable what NFL films did for the National Football League what which Steve sable date with his dad add both local guys and of course if you you know NFL films right over there mount laurel what they did to promote the game of football in the sixties when it was no where near the number one sport the country I mean you had baseball you a boxing your college football all ahead of professional football what they did to highlight the game to shine a different spot like to be creative in an artistic with the way that you look at the game utilizing classical music slow motion yeah replays you different camera angles you name it what they did to change the way that people look at the game was nothing short of remarkable and a and it's a shame that it's happened posthumously Steve got to win the Elbe doctors father into the hall of fame at the times the was battling brain cancer but for him to get in I thought was flat out awesome yes not he yeah got it back everything's under the contributions that side you have still to this day yeah I mean he tell me somebody who is more deserving I'm telling you AP is deserving is anybody so the one that I and I know Jodie touched on this when I was coming and I was listening to him and he's dead on about this it's a real shame and I I don't know if it's gonna happen former night I I I really hope it does but it's a real shame that I Joe Klecko didn't get it again this year if if you're not familiar with me you know when you hear Dan Klecko on our air doing eagles post games and and like you work with during the football season a damn good friend of mine but Joe was a great player he's a local guy grew up in Chester went to temple but was a phenomenal player for the jets eat play from seventy to seventy seven to eighty eight and the first Jeez for five years of his career the sac wasn't even cactus that so and he was a guy who literally you could play everywhere he played the tackle he played nose tackle he played defensive end you could move asides yeah you can move in every single place on the football field and all the guy did was the lever and and it's unfortunate because nose tackles indeed tackles are gonna put up monster numbers think about you know a guy like Fletcher **** could have a big game but because he's at being occupied by two tacklers or maybe is not getting a sack he's just he's creating the pressure somebody else gets the sack that happens often times you know but it it but a lot of those years even look like I was playing end they can keep the sack is that in other words like for example I seventy eight he was a defense of an I. seven eighty he was a defense of an eighty one he was a defense of that then he moved more inside your starting in in eighty two eighty three and the rest of his career but I know Gary Myers of Jody had on earlier in his show was a guy who really pushed for kind of the way ray push for for a tiny the Donald you know in a domino kind of pushed we double push for Dawkins yet Dawkins yeah double push for doc hold on which bush for Dawkins Gary Myers push for collect but it's he didn't get a ton of votes in the US and and that's you know probably not a great sign but I hope at some point they come to their their senses and and Joe Klecko gets and but that was that was the one that kind of stood out to me I know you know drew Pearson went on his his harangue about not getting in but that was one that stood out so what what it since we're on this Mike let let's play the Carmichael again so this this is it the audio of the phone call David Baker calling Harold Carmichael and letting him know that after all these years because Carmichael's but after this for a long time after all these years he finally got it my great grandma and to hear that you're gonna have a bronze bust in canton Ohio hello all men you're going to be a member of the centennial class and we're we're gonna tell you and keep your legacy alive forever yeah or what you're talking okay thank you great that's pretty cool I mean I think that's a genuine reaction right there what you got from hell Carmichael and it's it's well deserved you know this isn't just some sympathy vote that this is a guy who deserve to be at and your was ahead of his time in terms of the size and was versatile what could catch a long ball was a great are you know fade end zone alley OOP I could go over the metal versatile could do almost anything and you know play the game at six foot eight we came out of southern a small school and went on to have some great years for short was very good the playoffs still had amazing career so happy

"A somehow figured out how to use proteins to Get Inorganic Minerals to deposit. Suppose we could do that with cocaine or working on that now. So as you get semiconductor crystals to be forman pattern ways if we can succeed without could really transform a whole industry so I think the short term things will get a readout in. The short term are primarily medicine but then with our Zeta making strides in In I catalysis end You know in chemistry producing Producing compounds that'll be another interesting area so I think it's going to be very exciting because you know the spinouts will push stuff that's more mature and we're supposed to be an engine of discovery and innovation here and people. I think we'll continue to. We have a couple of new companies that we spinning out in the next six months and I doubt continue to push the frontier of knowledge and technology and spin. Those things out you know. So it's it's GonNa be exciting are the more mature areas. The ones where more of the biology itself has been worked out. So for instance like I'll to cancer you know. There's a lot of understanding now about the tumor. Immune system interaction there. There's there's a contextual backdrop that you can operate him when designing a brand new protein you kind of know what properties you want. You described them early to super importantly making whereas if you look at something like Alzheimers for instance where like the pathophysiology of the disease itself is still like. We're working on that. Like how would you even begin to design something optimally? Listen extremely good point and when I when I mentioned earlier that it was a confluence of things one of the things. I should've mentioned. Is that our understanding of biology. Lack of biology has got the point where we can pinpoint specific targets. Were for example. You had a high affinity binding protein. You might cause you might cure disease. And so you're right. Interleukin two the Interleukin two receptors. An is a excellent targeted validated whereas Alzheimer Alzheimer's is much more difficult. These were not sure really where to target so with protein design You know we. We have control over on the biochemical individual molecule level. But it doesn't help in cases where you don't understand the biology well enough to you have to be able to come up with specifications of an ideal protein. What is properties would be Where if you could that you would have a good chance of curing disease and requires a more advanced understanding of the of the of the disease in the case of medicine. I saw one article about you recently. Where you said you don't travel very much but and this is an important point. I think it speaks to how you manage your time. We touched on it earlier. do you do you say no to a lot of those kinds of David come speak halfway? I'm sure you get it. All the time comes back all around the world. I probably a couple invitations. Go somewhere every day and it's just not it's not feasible. I mean I I would like to but I feel like I have a big group year end. I feel like my job is here and I also old project but I I. It's not a very very efficient use of my time to go get on a plane. I travel somewhere. You know and give a talk which I already heard uses mytalk and I might meet a few people that come back. Also concerned about releasing to co two the atmosphere or to do on every trip obviously and so. I really try and stay here as I basically I. I try and be here every day. And you don't feel like you're missing out on that Intellectual Cross. Fertilization happens that a lot of conferences of you know. I could be to some extent but it's always a balance you know ended up. I feel like you know I encourage people like to go to meetings and have those sort of interactions but I I feel like my my real work is here and I mean it's good to go out every once in a while said it's important. Stay open and learn new things but But ultimately you know were the stage now where the the question is is actually going on solving problems rather than just said you just can't keep taking information in and their other sources of ways of getting information in so it's really just you know every moment is precious at stop if a l almost invariably when. I come back from a trip the next day when walking around the lab if you've Caution so excited you're white. I ever leave fascinating stuff. Joe Horrigan leaves Pro Football Hall of Fame after 42 years

"Joe Horrigan. Yes. Forty two years, the keeper of the flame at the pro football fame his last day on the job as yesterday. Mean so would you see the buildings still standing? I don't know. Personally held it up in confirmed. But one of the nicest sweetest guys. ESPN did a story about have over the weekend. I mean he has been doing everything for the hall of fame. And in terms of a great story when we first. When we. Like the sweetest man he would be the ones calling the hall of famers on the phone to let them know. A couple times doing pretty cool, rich because. Yeah, because we all right? So I'll tell story here. So we're on the air in, in Houston, Texas, at the Super Bowl for Super Bowl thirty eight our first one we ever did. Okay. Or the calendar year two thousand four NFL season two thousand three year that the patriots. The panthers. And then we watched them beat the eagles the next year Jacksonville. So reason why I'm bringing this up is our set was right near in the convention center, I ever NFL total axis set right near the main convention center dra- hall like the largest room in the convention center where they held all the press conferences, including for the pro football hall of fame. Now all you folks out there. No, the pro football hall of fame class is announced now at the NFL honors they try to keep it quiet. David Baker, the president of the pro football hall of fame walks around and knocks on doors of hotel rooms were all the eligible finalists are holed up with their families hoping to hear that knock on the door, and it's created some really amazing video moments where David Baker lets the players know that. They're now fully enshrined. They're immortal. It's like a very nice. It's, it's like a publisher's clearinghouse moment without the check. Right. So that's the way it's done now. And they try and keep that quiet until it's announced that the NFL honors a used to be they just announced in the press conference. That's it. And the players who were finalists were invited to the Super Bowl city and those that thought they were gonna make it showed up. Others were working on TV in many other parts of their their lives. There were working professionally at the Super Bowl and for just happened to be there, and some just wouldn't show because they didn't wanna show up to the host city and then find out they didn't make it. It's expensive. You know, and it stinks. I remember one year Warren Moon. Told me the year he got in Warren Moon. Was in town, and he was driving in a car. Somewhere around the city. I forget, what city was announced he was ending his driving in a car, and he was either going to get the phone call from the hall to say that he was in and he'd show up at the convention center drive convention center, or you didn't get the call, Dr the airport. Town. So that's the way it used to be. We're sitting there. And our green room was right next to our NFL, total access at, and John Elway and Barry Sanders, went in that year together. Jill. Look that up for me, make sure that this might not a pulling this story here. Was it? John Elway in Barry Sanders. Think went into the same pro football hall of fame class in the summer of two thousand four. And they were announced N Houston together, and they were. Correct. And they were in our green room. They were in our green room, just chilling out before they were being brought into the draft hall into the into the convention center, press conference hall room. And being announced. And we got an idea at the NFL network. You know what? Let's make this a thing. Like we had video of them waiting, and just we could have interviewed them and like, okay so players are here. And the press conference is going there. Let's televise the press conference. So the next year, I was the host of the press conference, and it was. Difficult. Tap dancing for me when I'm up there and hard-bitten media of the NFL world was used to just having the announcement happen. Right. And those who were there showing up and they'd be there, and they'd find out the rest of them. Instead, we just drew. We I think I kinda Jim great it like we try to draw out and the people in the room. The media members room really getting pissed off. So next year, it was just like we're gonna nounce them and wait for the people to come and show up, and then I would interview them, but sometimes it would take them five ten minutes to get to the convention center. And then the meantime, we would Joe would get the guys who was not who are not there on the phone for me to interview live. I remember those. Joe a couple of times me on live NFL network television. Just trying to tap. That's I forget the name of the guy, you don't have to look it up either. He was a veterans committee. And shrining who had been out of public life for very long time. And I'll be honest with you, who I never heard of I had no idea, he played like it was really from a long time ago. But we were so desperate to fill time. Joe got him on the phone. I don't wanna say. Joe got the guy on the phone, and as we're coming back from commercial break, he tells me, so and so's on the phone, but he probably can only answer questions because he has dimension. Mike ally. Gosh and Joe then ran away. Because he had another phone call to make. Sweetheart. I mean this guy is just so and I just was okay. You know, this is a great moment for this man, I asked him a couple of questions. He was able to actually answer them. But Joe gave me that nice little heads up. You know, hey, just right heads up for you. I may not be able to answer a single question. Guy. He just a sweetheart of a guy and I just wanted to say, thank you, Joe, he's out there, driving around, or he's on the driving range, or wherever somebody just let them know gave a

"Dr David Baker is the institute's director. He spoke with geekwire right now. Now, there's a projection that's made before each flu season or maybe six months before he's flu season about what strains of flu are likely to be you know, coming through. And then a vaccine is prepared specific those strains, but those predictions can be wrong. So their goal is a one time lifetime immunization against flu beyond that the protein design. Researchers are working toward a vaccine against things like HIV and even cancer. Now, this grant money comes through something called the day ships project. It's a collaborative run through Ted that awards money for nonprofits pursuing big goals like this the U dub protein design team one of just eight recipients chosen for more than fifteen hundred applications nationwide. Carleen Johnson, KOMO news. This year's flu season, by the way, has peaked later than usual with health officials seeing a spike in cases just weeks ago, it's winding down. Now, according to the state health department with one hundred seventy six confirmed flu deaths so far and that doesn't clued one child. Not nearly as bad as last year when eighty thousand people nationwide died from the flu. And the vaccine was only about thirty six percent effective. Tonight's the deadline for several bills in the state legislature. As komo's Eric Heintz reports, a key member of the state's Democratic Party is not in Olympia because of illness, including the flu Senator John McCoy is chairman of the Senate Democratic caucus today. Lawmaker is missed a few days of work in the Senate as he recovers from flu and pneumonia. There's a deadline today for the Senate and house to act on bills coming from the opposite chamber with the seventy five year old has not been in the Senate in the past week. He told the Everett herald, he's feeling better. But instead a date for returning to work. Eric Heintz, KOMO news springing forward and falling back could soon fall by the wayside a Bill to keep daylight saving. Time year round has been approved by the state Senate. And now it faces a five o'clock deadline this evening. This is Joel gentlemen, apparent who likes the idea? I don't know what the economic impact of that is. But certainly.

UW institute developing lifetime flu vaccine gets $45 million award

"Progress toward a universal lifetime flu vaccine just got a big boost with. A grant awarded to the university of Washington school of medicine's institute for protein design from komo's Carleen Johnson. David Baker, the U dub institute's director has big dreams. He wants to attract some of the sharpest world thinkers to work with him in the field of protein design one of the goals to create a flu vaccine that lasts for life. He spoke with geekwire vaccine current vaccine's just are not very effective. So we're coming up with completely new ways of designing flu vaccines taking advantage of the new protein design methodology with felt here at the institute, and they were just awarded forty five million dollars to do that work. This time supports the money comes through the day ships project. It's a philanthropic collaborative run through Ted focusing on projects that fuel massive change all over the world. The protein team was one of just eight nonprofit selected from fifteen hundred applicants cracking the flu vaccine could put researchers on a path toward more difficult vaccines for malaria, hepatitis C, and even cancer.

Football Hall of Famers threaten boycott over health coverage

"Allnight Antonio Brown wasn't on hand with the Steelers Monday. Could we see a hall of fame ceremony with fellow hall of famers absent from there is a group of all of that's demanding health insurance coverage and a share of NFL revenues or the former players will boycott the induction ceremonies. Eric Dickerson is leaving the group. He chatted with our Bob Leon outside the lines. The guys deserve this. I mean, we play the most dangerous sport. It is in sports. Pro football, and they deserve it. This way overdue when you go to the hall of fame, and you see the guy can't hardly get around. And they'd have no health care. A lot them have Medicare, Medicaid, the you know, that that's fine. But there's no hill Q, and it should be healthcare. I mean, major league baseball has it. They have a great pension plan. But we don't. Major league baseball. If you play one day and major league baseball, you know, you have health care for the rest of your life. He play forty three days and you had to play for three days. You get thirty thousand for the rest of your life ten years, you get two hundred thousand rescue not even close to that. I gotta say I won't forget, my my good friend deacon Jones when he said to me, Sarah, how much I said, well, I have like forty one I said, I'll probably get like twelve hundred dollars. So you know, what I get? I got two hundred dollars two hundred fifty dollars a month. He said, what am I gonna do with two hundred fifty dollars a month? I think the perception is that all NFL players are rich, and we haven't made, and that's just so far from the truth at your letter is addressed to the head of the hall of fame. "Votes that you need then then i get it but you look at not only his numbers you look at the class he's walking in there with randy moss ray lewis earlier the fact that he got in now shows he should have been in long ago and so you know selfishly i'd much rather have t o go there and include in his speech some shots at the hall of fame voters for for not having him in there sooner but also much rather the pro football hall of fame go high on this and do the tribute thing or whatever you're gonna do a guy who gave a lot of attention the nfl didn't do anything really off off the field i mean all you think about off the field stuff look there was distractions there were postgame moments that were sit ups in the driveway but there wasn't you know there wasn't testing positive any violence off the field i mean i i look at that and i go look he gave a lot of the league i get him not wanting to show up i wish he would but i'm not gonna i'm not gonna bash them for it i would like for him to be there because i think it matters if you were an all time great in your around your contemporaries and also played the same position you really should be there i think for david baker in the national football league as far as the as far as all famous concert mad i really believe that they should have a video i think that it took nor the that he's not gonna be there i think is wrong i think they should have a video think chris laser gentleman te'o it just like do the old johnny carson you know it's just moving along just show like the video i just do that and you're gonna mail him his jacket so obviously he's he's definitely not coming by least te'o and just do that and then you'd be even if it looks posthumously i don't care you know he should do that though can you.

"I i don't know all i know and i said this to te'o if he was gonna be here tomorrow but i'm told these canceled many of his appearances they was planning on making i know he's made some on other shows on the last few days didn't really mention any of this correct i didn't see any of this win of any of this has not you're making a mistake deal and again i don't know what has happened here and i'm assuming an i should make any sumptious i should make any subjects but on no is i don't know of a single person that would step foot in that hall of fame and talk to people like david baker and joe horrigan who run the organization and have been the director of exhibits and communications and enjoy oregon runs the event and deals with the hall of famers personally i don't know of a single one that has been offended or been made to feel offended by any of them and it's an incredible weekend harry carson and if it has to do with the fact that it took a while to get harry carson essentially told the hall of fame voters don't even consider me anymore you've passed on me enough and wasn't even in the the the super bowl city when the announcement was made that he finally got he just screw it i'm flying hawaii and when he finally landed after twelve hour flight and turned his phone on and there were like one hundred messages he found out he was in the hall of fame you know what he did he turned around and went back.

"And click on the segment post questions or comments onto the website or tweet us our twitter handle is at forum and again our guest here in studio is david baker energy and clean tech reporter for the san francisco chronicle they also the energy commission talked about new energy standards in addition to this mandatory rule what else came out of this well the commission every couple of years goes through this process of of basically tightening up the standards for efficiency for buildings and this started as kind of a quiet thing back in the nineteen seventies and it was i i would say a radical idea at the time moore they basically were saying okay your house needs this any new home that's built here has to meet these certain standards and every couple of years they revisit them and tighten them up and they're on things about the quality of your windows how leaky they can be actually there about things like installation what materials you can use and it sounds dry as all get out but it has a huge cumulative effect over time since those standards were first imposed in the seventies electricity use per person in california has stayed more or less the same even as we added all kinds of gadgets to our houses and if you look at those figures for the rest of the country use has gone way up per person because those gadgets but here in the state because they keep revisit putting all these dry little details every few years art usa stayed pretty much the same and that means we don't need as many power plants out there to supply us it also adds to the cost of a house too so there's a bit of a trade off there well i'm getting comments here right away i'm going to go to your calls by the way listeners who are being screened to call us now about the grid let me read it a couple of comments that are coming vincent ben says it's all about the grid if the grid is not smart having all these power generating facilities distributed won't be affective and beth writes the western power grid is stressed and aging and california's prone to brownouts in the summer so it won't seem making solar requirement could relieve some of the.
