Patriots sign QB Cam Newton to replace Tom Brady

"Tonight I think it's exciting to see what Newton can do a healthy Newton with Josh McDaniels and bill ballot check in this offense sieve juggernauts if you well and remember McDaniels they run a very innovative offense that Matt Werner ram mentioned it last hour in twenty ten they draft Gronk Aaron Hernandez they go to that too tight and sat before everybody else they have in the NFL did then it's copy cats city they hurried up shortly thereafter before chip Kelly was even hired by the eagles and now that's commonplace and this new read option type offense the Newton is a master of the patriots haven't done it given Tom Brady's obvious limitations in that category so this picture offense last year was a boring offense to watch it was a slog it was a struggle it wasn't exciting it was the first time where if you're a patriots fan you looked wistfully at the other teams and said why why can't we have Josh Allen yeah there is a ton of pics but always teases interesting to watch why why can't we have Lamar Jackson Pat Mahomes Ryan Tannehill why why can't we have to Shawn Watson why can't we have a quarterback who can move a little bit who can do more than the ball on the territory a five yard screen pass to a double covered Julian Edelman why well healthy cam Newton gives the patriots a more dynamic offensive attack I mean let's face it this was not a very good offense with Tom Brady especially in the second half of last season I think that there is that thirsty to try something new in belt check the is a really smart guy and smart people want new challenges and I think him new night I think introducing that element of offense which is going to come anyway because Jarrett Stidham is more mobile too so either way the patriots were gonna introduce more of that read option modern type NFL offense but and I think that excite spell check and probably excites McDaniels and in terms of where they're going as a running a running based offense Newton obviously is far more dynamic in that category the Brady too and if Sony Michelle returns to form a franchise and left guard this offseason me not to the patriots about their starting center David Andrews back healthy and they have three guys who can now play full back including two players who they drafted this year that's clearly the direction the patriots are moving find a really good and versatile defense and I Bella check as one league does this as the week goes this way Belichick is going that way and that you see that the roster construction of this team and I can even help

"New York City people in their twenties. I wasn't isn't the only Asian guy in the field all races. Like I said it was co ED so There was at least one female on the on the field at any given time but it was actually very good leaking all actually shot to all the women that played off for the season. No but I mean that. Take no question like they know what time it was. I I mean so us out there like Charles once after the the third one. I was just like this is ridiculous. This guy can't not to me leaders here for the game okay. So that's what it is. They it felt like he was going to be Al Bundy. Poke is touchdown type store. I feel like an part of me feels like that's not your only one. No that was that was like by foreign but I had they had maybe like two other picks the whole year. I didn't play a ton of safety. I played primarily linebacker But Yeah Yeah Okay what it is. I'm gonNA give you props. I mean I just haven't seen it so I just got to take your word for and since you've never lied to me I just I believe uh-huh believe it's all true what I don't like the you always keep telling I'm just telling stories. "Surf and turf podcasts. We superbowl champion Willie. Cologne was going on everybody. I am Steven. Shay very exciting weekend of divisional round. Yes they're all some say the best weekend of football in the year. I can see that this week. We've got AFC AN NFC championships. The championship Sunday Dunk and Dan which most people consider the best day of football as far as quality. You got two games the final four. Yeah very exciting. We Got David Andrews Patriots Center the Big Fan of on the on the show today Very great interview very very open like talked a lot about the Patriots. Tom Brady Bill Belichick along with the whole patriots. When you just got it you got it? You gotTA pretend I thought he was very fond of Joe. Judge I'm sure we'll put that clip out and socials well YouTube channel. We subscribe to Youtube Place. No but yeah so some great stories from him. I really good interview but I wanNA talk about This past weekend the Divisional Football Games A couple of things happen. That were very interesting. one of which was it just A shift in the analytical way of thinking so analytics guys are always talking about pass pass pass you know running. The football is good. But you know you don't want to be run heavy but you look at the teams that won this weekend especially on Saturday. You had the San Francisco Forty niners miners who rushed for one hundred. Eighty seven yards which was way more than the Vikings. I think the Vikings had Forty forty total yards rushing so one hundred forty seven yard disparity in that. And then also you look at you know tractor. CEO Derrick Henry Him and the Titans going into Baltimore and shocking the world running over them him. You know being a rush. I think they had over two hundred yards rushing. You know you says shocked the world. I don't think to many were too. Many people were around too. Many people were shocked. I think it was more so I don't think people were shocked. I don't only people were shocked at Tennessee one game I think people are more shocked. How bad tomorrow played again? Right so is the is the common question. The Baltimore beat themselves or Tennessee. Really win that game. I'm on the side. That Tennessee really went out and won that game but I understood. Why have a theory rather On why Baltimore lost again go on well I mean it goes back. Lamar Jackson played last game in a season season Nuruddin marking room. The stars didn't play Pittsburgh pretty much had a chance to you know. Go ahead if they would have beat the Baltimore. Ravens Guide in in happened ally. Tennessee Tennessee goes and by all accounts beats the New England patriots in Foxborough which is extremely hard to do Chuck Chuck double-check loss at his own. Game they ran the ball. They were efficient named. Didn't beat themselves. Ryan Tannehill look good. Tennessee moves on the Baltimore. When you go into the second round of the Playoffs playoff game right that divisional around especially after beat New England Tennessee's confidence was through the roof? They were for them. They had did very had their ahead accomplished a lot of people thought they couldn't -CCOMPLISH so now they're going into a Baltimore. They've already proved it to themselves playing with house money right. They are approved it to themselves that we can take on anybody. Put Us in a ring with anybody we can knock love they go to Baltimore. You're in a play. A Baltimore team. Hasn't technically played in three weeks because it was the last game against Pittsburgh nineteen days in between games right. They didn't play the they had to buy. And then that weekly up to the game. You're talking about a team. The Tennessee titans who running about run a ball their physical outfit. They don't beat themselves. And they flat out get after the quarterback in different facets and then they all by the way to your point they have the best running back in the playoffs. Derek nine goes is Baltimore team. WHO's been out trying to figure it out? You're you're putting in quarterback who by the way his last playoff game. He didn't play that well so his psyche hint plus him being out for three weeks plus top of continuing This kind of Mo in this. Mvp Path that he has taken on. Tennessee was the tougher outfit strong. Alfred more mentally prepared outfit. This is why you do not starters the last week no matter what your playoff. Whatever your implications are you always play your starters because if Lamar Jackson? I'm saying if Lamar Jackson played that at least half against Pittsburgh he would have been more prepared for that game against Tennessee. Because Pittsburgh's a tougher outfit. They pride themselves being physical. They pride themselves running the ball he would have had a better taste and a better feel for what was to come now. He didn't know Tennessee He he didn't know who's GonNa be playing Tennessee. Pittsburgh to lose Feminine Played Tennessee but he would have been more equipped and more mentally prepared. Then I think he was game against Tennessee. Yeah I think it's easy to go back and say that. But like hypothetically Lamar Jackson got hurt or anything like that. Then you're looking at. You always get her Stephen Che. That's football in two thousand seven. The Bucks had left guard. I believe it was was at that time Aaron Sears. who was a very good player and got hurt right before the place because we played in week seventeen and they miss? The wildcard occurred game. And you know it was Kinda curtains for our season I I am a proponent of resting versus Russ but it is that looks like it doesn't sit thus he plays plays them in a practice and they were there and they wear pads. You can't turn that on. You have to continuously trained and disciplined and focus and keep that level of intensity Especially in the playoffs and they lost that. I guess what you can point to that the ravens are fairly young young team. Like Lamar Jackson. is a young quarterbacks. They're young at the receiver position. They're talking about him did you. Did you believe Bolt when you when you saw Tennessee. See in Baltimore play. Did you feel like you're looking at the Baltimore. Ravens meet personally. No I didn't I mean the first drive bill good until Mark Andrews couldn't real in a pass but I think the bigger question with all this is you know everyone had gone to pass the ball past passable. Is that era of football unless you have a patrick. Mahomes is or even Shawn Watson in a losing effort type talent that can throw for a ton yards. Is this formula of defense and running the ball actually the super bowl formula and has nothing really changed. No I think. That's just that's just a makeup of their team their identity I mean they have an office align that a couple of years a couple of years ago when John was with the Pittsburgh steelers you know he complimented that offers a line I think. Derrick Henry Does the same for this office a lot. There let it they do a great job zone blocking he runs downhill and he's able for a guy who is he. Can he can redirect uncut on Don which is hell of impressive. And he runs behind on his pat so I think him and office have chemistry. That's that's their makeup their identity and I think that's what they rely on and I think back to the identity where Mike Gabel came came from being when he was a pat even when he was in Kansas City. He comes from a kind of A. You know a birthing place where running backs are dominating Clinton even though he had brady and but you know when he was the past they still had to give running back and they still had a physical office. So I don't I don't I think Tennessee right now is hungry. They get it and I think they know I think when you have now beaten the pats and you have now been Baltimore. Their confidence it is is is through the roof going into the playoffs. You need that Kana blind confidence like there's no way we're GONNA lose this game and they have it right now so if you're trying to build a team up from scratch your middle of the road team close the playoffs. Or maybe you're just trying to full rebuild. Are you trying to go the you know. Look for a diamond in the rough as far as getting top tier blue chip quarterback Like you know ever for the nets next Patrick Mahomes or are you going to concentrate on the short term. Maybe just get game manager quarterback And you know build around the offense aligning them run game in a fierce defense. All I'm going to build around the office of Line Line in defense alone and 'cause you you need to be able to run a ball you gotta be stopped ball. You get a quarterback commands a game and he don't have to have the big arm he just has. It has to be able to make the right place in situation football. You can go far. Yeah what's interesting is like. That's kind of what the ravens were built around like. There are running team like they ran the ball to death on teams and played good defense. It just didn't work out for them this week. Tennessee pretty much did what they do other teams or did other teams. Yes something I want to talk about also. Is that this quote from last week show with Nick. Mangold picked up little steam. I knew the exhequer occur in a lot of people around bar sore. Kind of Chirpin me and you know The fact that I ran a four four forty at jets fast asked in two thousand eight. Your story your words. My starting I mean is a true story. I I'm not saying you're lying. I think you'd only when that. Yeah I've been I mean there's never caught on tape. There are no like in that. You said your father was which WHO's with you. There's a guy a guy roomed with uh-huh Hofstra who actually comment on my instagram. So I remember that is real time ship. Yeah but There is another memory that I want to bring up on this podcast so I don't think it's necessarily as impressive as four. Forty which you know is speaks for itself. The numbers don't lie sneeze at nothing to sneeze at but I did play a little bit of flag football as as a mid twenty in New York City in one game in particular. Okay this was down by the East River. I have a photo of myself at the game. there's no actual film of this happening my wife if my wife actually did attend this game so I played fly football for one season. Actually I think kind of with a I had one other a friend played and we played with a group of strangers. Things Zok sports and so it was coed league but it was for the most all guys and you had to have. I think one year on the field at all times so as a social thing and you know you got to know the teammates but it was mainly me and one friend who just go and we love to play football so we played so this particular. Yeah played safety There was one quarterback for the team who had a somewhat of a slow release good core by strong arm all that stuff. Whatever for whatever reason was about to be Al Bundy Poku six touchdowns store whatever for whatever reason I could? I could read this guy like a book. Five interceptions you game. Five hundred thousand one game. I believe I had Three real won the Hail Mary than in the first half to have four and a half and I had five total for the game. The problem is the store. You don't have any proof and you don't even have any holidays of you ever doing. I mean who goes in like tapes. They're like a wreck football games. I mean I can. I can guys exactly Stephen J with what like phones are going to have like a kind of and this was The two thousand thirteen games since the day. You know the time all right well. There are multiple wall when they're way more witnesses for this one because it's a it's more recent either way more people feel nobody's necessarily paying attention to a guy running just forty or national product. Nobody's paying attention. Asian safeties too. I mean it was. We're talking about you know the Working Class.

"You know you you have i think these perceptions of like this almost rockstar party lifestyle day it's it's a physical ass job and your jobs on the line so it only makes sense to take care of your shit but you know again kind of at that level i guess you know in terms of hotels whether you're at in the college level or the nfl level like staying fucking holiday right i mean like it's like five star in i mean how how do they accommodate for security you guys have your own rooms share rooms like yes as a rookie you're gonna share rooms and then what you know you're not a vet technically but after you know second or you have to earn your keep you get your own room which is definitely nice just to just to decompress specially everyone's different before games and how they like to handle themselves and in college it was definitely more of a shock when guys you know we go stay at the ritz carlton in college and had a buddy always took the robes that was coming home with ropes and they never fit six seven three thirty so they never fit it was it was not a good site nfl guys more and more used to it you know but it's interesting it's there's a lot of security a lot that goes into a lot of moving parts which is crazy especially the super bowl this year we had like national guard out in front of the hotel it was nuts humvees dudes like it was some crazy stuff at the super bowl this year and it's usually not like that usually pretty relaxed and game days are pretty secure you know you know dogs everywhere and you know it's a i to me it's a logistical nightmare couldn't even imagine especially traveling but you know we we've got our own team security and then you know local police officers and things like that that are usually with us.

"Is unreal people crazy down there they love that stuff and it's an arms race to an extent you know i'm big college football which to me just didn't matter and i think put get you know now it's new best thing and flashy thing who's got the cooler uniforms and within today that don't really matter what matters is winning and at the end of the day i i would rather go to a place where i could have success and win rather than take cool pictures and uniforms or play video games yeah i guess the in terms of travel to when you travel as as a college team what's that like man you're definitely spoiled in the military you're fucking not yeah heard stories and let me tell you it's yes now like that that's for sure from college then fell i mean they're both first rate and you know nfl you do a lot longer trips college pretty short flights you know mean tall sec yeah i mean i think the first furthest i ever went and college was missouri you know like our flight but no security twos ordered ship yeah you do whatever you wanna planes like i mean now i mean guys standing up on planes and it's just like there's no rules you know but man it was fun traveling definitely was you know and i think i think it's always you know even now i'm you know the nfl level just being able to get away sometimes you know you eat dinner with those dudes and all that come rotary playing cards in the hotel room whatever it may be just bullshitting on the bus or playing and laughing and you know sometimes i just sit there just you know you just hear people laughing and it's just it's just there's nothing like it and.

"One of the things too that that again like a lot of these questions i know people are curious about it myself included but going back to some of the college stuff first of all i guess the you know we talked about in integrating from a team in taliban but is there an element to to me it seems like there is whether it's football basketball whatever is there an element of almost kind of like a rock star status at college when you're when you're division one starting football player like college a fun college real short answer yeah i mean you know i guess every college experiences different but you know at the university of georgia football skiing and h you know we we had some good times and you know a lot of drinks we didn't pay for may we had we had a blast and even go to fucking class like is that we did we did now we did go to class i i still gotta go back and get my degree at some point but i mean guys did have to put in the work you know i mean i will say that to some extent you know it's not as i think college athletics gets a bad rep on underwater basket weaving and stuff i mean you gotta go to class you gotta do you gotta take care of your business and i think that's part of growing up and becoming a young man as you know you gotta take care of your shit so you can play football and you know but he had grown up in college man you know wherever the football players were that's will bar was to be at and you know we had a good time and you know there's probably some people that probably thought we were astles probably were and.

"Kids you know from such early level and i think how hard to describe them you've done it and seeing it and yeah i think for people sometimes that aren't in that world you know is kind of it's a special thing but you know i think that if i world war like that would be a lot better place no amen on that i mean you know between the military and we were talking earlier before we started recording about you know there's so many parallels between not just football team sports in general but especially football at that level i think because you know it's one thing to for it to be a hobby in high school or whatever but went you know and i think it's a lot it's easy for a lot of fans or or observers of professional sports and even myself included to you know to kind of be dismissive about you know the mental stress and pressure that exists when around of it is that you've job you know your livelihoods online like to me that's you know yes it's a game but it's not a game when it comes to that you know and so the parallels that exist between you know whether it's come rotary or team and talented whatever and the value that that kids get from that growing up i think is is imperative notorious about him and i played a lot of different sports too but and then obviously in the military that was it was a huge you know huge element of me kind of coming into my own as a as a man and and figuring out what what's right and what's not and what you know what to worry about what not to worry about and you know but but to me the i think it's a lot of times people have these misconceptions about professional sports in in some ways that way and i think that's one of them but.

"Yeah one of the things i'm curious about just just kind of thinking about prepping for this interview was obviously in high school like you're going to school with these kids are all basically from georgia and from that town for that matter when you cross up into or crossover rather into college curious about the dynamic of sports at that level which you know i mean division one collegiate athletics i mean that's basically pro without being paid what what is the dynamic like of of having a team of now going you know from the local you know municipality level to now where you've got guys from all over the country like i'm curious about the you know if there's clicks or or you know issues with integrating team members from all over the country i know in the military like there wasn't but it was because we're all on the same team bleeding the same blood red and all that it was kind of similar experience yeah you know i think sometimes i'm ignorant to things that go on in the world because i've grown up in this football bubble and you guys from you know white black asian whatever it is whatever you're rich poor though pairs one parent two parents and is just everyone comes together and you just put all that behind you and and sometimes i have to talk to myself and realize you know there's a lot of stuff going on in this world and it's hard for me to see that sometimes because you don't see that you know it is you know i mean you know so my best friends on our football team grew up nothing like me didn't grow up in the same whatever it may be and beth and that's what's so cool about and so unique about the military football is that you know you put all that bullshit aside because hey we gotta go out and you know we got to beat the defense in practice today you know you might have little rub and heads and camp you know guys going at it you compete and you're tired of hitting each other but you know once seasonals around i mean everyone's just all the bullshit aside we're all here together we gotta go beat whoever whoever's coming up on that schedule and man i think that's just i think that's what's so cool about sports and teachers.

"That was really kind of you know what we did we played football played sports and went on on the weekend and girls got involved in that kind of change times but you know and yeah no right and you know and then fortune enough for me i was able to get a scholarship to georgia and in there was not much of recruiting process it's all i wanted to do is play football for the university of georgia and you know i was where i was born raised and you know what to there and then thought about quitting wanted to quit wanted to come home and just hunt and fish and no shit dad said that that wouldn't happen and you know luckily he kind of talked me into stay in and i don't he didn't have talked me into hard but there was a time where i just you know didn't think for me and what what was it about it that that made you feel that way just it was just tough i mean anybody goes off college or whatever it is you know your way from home for the first time you know i was always kind of ever since i started playing football play with guys older than me two to three years we had to play my weight so i play with guys older and you know and i was good and i got to georgia and i was just another person and you know especially being a teenager boy you get a little cocky you know you get you start hearing people tell you how good you are you gotta realize really that good and that took me a little time and you know school was tougher knows a lot of different things and i just wanted to go hunt and some and i was kinda wasn't able to do that and.

"I was crammed in there pretty good yeah yeah i mean should i i was the prizes but but yeah one thing that you mentioned the the morning routine during the season you talk about a hot tub is there like a fucking monster hot tub they're like forty of them like if you're all get that traditional that silver tub warp polls you kind of see and then we've got you know i mean i'd say it's a pretty big hot tub you know pot coal tub and you know later later the season go especially colder and colder gives them for getting friendly in there yeah definitely so especially when you know eight degrees outside it real friendly i i don't don't doubt doubt it that one thing i'm curious of just you know from a as somebody who works out and growing up watching football like always wondered watching some combine stuff what's your your your pr for squat bench and deadliest man it's been a long time since i've really just hit one rep max is you know this morning we had like four sets of to think it was and you know try to stay around four seventy five for squats yeah for squats dead lift ivan dead lifted in no gosh along time do more power cleans things like that but you know the last time i did lifted it was four or five on a trap war then bitch man most of ever done is three seventy five for set of thirty so so i guess would you say in college did you were you more geared towards that type of stuff than your now's more functional now or.

"You know that that come rodri piece i think is there's a huge parallel between military groups in in football teams and i think that's why you see so much energy like an off seasons and training camps with military guys in whatever but even some of your coaches have our prior prior vets right yeah yeah i know our long coach was a marine and you know there's something special about it and you know i i can't you know say my five or six best friends you know they might not play nfl football or even college football but they all played football with me at some point there's some about that bond you create with those type of guys and you know for me that's always been something that's detroit to the game and you know like i said there's just you know how it is there's some special about that going through a time was hard and socks and yeah you got to rely on each other and you know you know push comes to shove you can rely on that person yeah no the the hottest steals forged in the or the hardest deal rather four jihadist fire that that bond same thing with me i mean the guys that i went through buzzword through or were in in whether it's training or at the team or even as instructors like that shit that you go through together just yeah it forms a special thing for for everybody and it said it's neat to see that parallel but just one real quick thing just kind of i like to throw a little lightning round at at the guests just kind of some off the wall questions that are that are more lighthearted is to kind of kind of get things rolling but one thing i know i'm curious of at that level like in terms of your morning routine in this is both off season and during during the during the season i'm assuming there's a pretty stark contrast between can you.
