"Subways probably has more experience and would be easier to control a hotel or at least they a chain of hotels. You know if you had the wind encore if you had Mandalay Bay and you could probably control that a little bit more but there will be far less for families to David Aldridge senior. Nba writer here on the rich. Eisen show and so what about the format or are you hearing? 'cause you know You you already here Some like Steve Kerr seen. He's figuratively on a beach right now. That we're there. And then you hear Damian Lillard and I think he's every right to say I I don't want to leave my family and my home or even bring them across the country. If I'm just playing out a string like you put me in a term where I've got a shot where I can I can do my dame time stuff then I'm in Where where does that stand right now? Do you think David I think if you you know to. To kind of you know generalize in terms of where they are. I think more people want more games right. So my guess is you will have some sort of tournament type of playoff format. Where whether it's one team whether it's two teams per conference and you wind up with twenty teams in this thing or you come up with some way where everybody's involved now. I'm not I've been asking a lot of people the last few days. Well Golden Faith already been eliminated from the playoffs how you eliminate especially by the way the most the most dangerous fifteen seed in the history of fifteen exaggerated Klay Thompson healthy right. But you're not get it. Look I know you want compelling programming to lay off again you want you dying in the playoffs. I get it. You know what I mean by There's a basic fairness you get. It's not like you played five days and then you shut down. You played sixty five. Okay you blame. Most of the season you played eighty plus percent of the season all ready so there has to be some sort of fairness regards to that those that percentage of the season meaning. Something you know doesn't have to mean everything but it should mean something right. I think there's a I think the argument of the Milwaukee the world is somewhat compelling. We did play a lot of the season. We were really good for most of that. Yes we should be able to take some of that advantage to the post season and I and I tend to agree with that so I think it will be. I don't think it'll be all thirty. I just can't see that I don't know how you can other than other than than playing those five seven games at the you know to get to you. Know they have obligations to their local. Tv markets in their local TV partners. So everybody's gotTa get to Seventy Games So that they don't lose more money you'll so you'll do you'll you'll do that right. So all thirty teams will play to get the seventy. But how how you then say that. It's okay for Cleveland in New York Golden State to compete for a championship. This year Steph. Just doesn't seem right to me. David Aldridge here on the rich. Eisen show on a few minutes. Left with you I've I've been conducting last dance exit interviews for a lot of people who now that now that it's all in the books Did you learn anything watching I? I can't say I learned anything and that's just because I'm old and I was there some up. I saw most of it. I mean you forget something. There's that's a different. That's a different point. Like I just forgot that Rodman just went to Vegas in the middle of the season right about that. I didn't remember that. I just forgot that he in the middle of the finals just left to go. Wwf and it just it just kind of reemphasize to me. You know what? I think a phenomenal job Phil. Jackson did coaching three years. Because it could've gone off the rails a hundred times you know So you forget things that happen And I'm just what I felt branches. I'm just glad that younger viewers and younger people who like the NBA. Now you know fans under forty who weren't there or they were infants when when that was going on. I have no recollection of it. I'm just glad that they have some sense. Not only of how good Michael Jordan was. 'cause he was that good and you remember he was that good. I mean that is. We're not making that. He was one of the greatest players if not the greatest player. Voltaren right but how competitive and dynamics league was in terms of the rivalries Passan's and the hatred and all of those things that's those teams had for one another and how compelling that Meza Games and so it wasn't and what. I'm what I'm trying to explain to people that you know. Eighty five eighty four could be a hell of a game if they really hate each other and every possession is a battle. You know to be like this. I mean it's not just about it's not just about you. Know shot efficiency all the time you know part of why some of US older people really came to love the NBA was because the competition was so visceral and real you know and and that and that made it compelling even though they didn't score a hundred and fifteen points every game you know like it was still really fun to watch those games back in those years slowly. It was me too and I do remember part of the conversation being at the time and this is legit and now you look back like what the hell are people even saying like. Yeah but the western conference was so weak when Jordan would just win all the time right and then you saw and you also just saw to the the the the the people who he beat he beats magic he beats Malone and Stockton he beats Barclay and Phoenix. He Beats You Know Reggie Miller on the way he beats Patrick Ewing every single damn time and then he beats Gary Payton in the sonics when they were terrific. And then you see you know the the Pistons. Ooh He couldn't beat to start then he'd vanquishes them on the way and the number of people who every single time. I'd sit there. I'm like you know what every fan base is GONNA get. There's during this ten part documentary. Every fan base is GonNa get theirs and then they showed the trivia the number of sixty teams Jordan in the Phil Jackson Pippen Bulls eliminated numbers at seven of them sets third number and absurd and Shaquille O'Neal in Orlando. He wound up. Taken out to you know I. It really was just remarkable in that regard..

"The decision that he would ah HIV test the entire league because if they wouldn't allow magic back any to find out who who also needs to be out did there's there. There's probably some truth there. I don't know if it was specifically in a meeting a this was conveyed to players individually as they and their agents called the League but that was certainly conveyed to those players that that you know we wanted me to test them test. Everybody and you know. I don't think anybody what he wanted. And I don't think anybody wanted that. Smokers so right now that That was a quick decision You know and again he the way he played in the All star the game and the incredible variety put on that day. Really I think started to kind of ease people's uncertainty and discomfort comfort with playing on the floor with him and against him last one for you David. You've got a good personal story of dealing with David Stern where you might have been on the wrong business end or A. AH ANYTHING OR A A story. That leaps to mind about David Style I got I got cussed out many times by Davies. Turn many on the phone. Oh it was almost always almost always involving the lockout You know I was. I'm old enough not that I've covered three of them so It was not fun. Those are not fun. Fun Times at all And because of the difference between the Union which is comprised the four hundred players each of each of whom has an opinion about this and has you know dozens of lawyers is it are also Willing to talk to you about it the NBA had one person speaking for it. And that was David Stern because he threatened everybody else was six or seven figure in your fines if they talked including owners I mean he find Michael Jordan he find Micky arison during lockouts. He Find Ted Leonsis during lockouts for seemingly innocuous she was things they said During those lockouts about one issue the other so he wasn't playing around so you didn't get you just didn't have access us to a whole lot of league people and so what would happen. Is that when you're covering. You would talk to union people will tell you this is what we want and this is where the League is being unreasonable. And so you would put that out. There and David didn't like that because he made. It seem like you know you were. You were backing the the union in this So you let you know about it. Firstly Profane -ly And I happened multiple times over the years while I was covering the league. You know and it was just so different you know you're getting screaming match people all the time you know people don't like what you wrote or what you said or what you did and you know and those things all happen. It's part of doing the job rich. I'm sure you've had issues over the years with people you don't ever you'll take it personally. You don't remember them. Your I remember when David Stern Chris. It wasn't a vent David. Stern cursed him out because he made you feel about two inches tall. But again if you had your if you had your information mation correct. He'll be willing to listen to what you had to say. That's the most important thing having your information. Correct love Love the call. David thank you happy new to you you and yours. And let's chat it In about actual sports as opposed to life and things like this will we'll chat down the road wrench my best to you and your family. Happy New Year. Thanks for happened right back at Ya at David Aldridge. DC on twitter. I follow him. You should as well amen. I know what he's talking about covering lockout. Ah I covered one I was the host of an NFL network show during the lockout. Most of my hair went during the lockout. Because you want just can we all get along and get back to playing games. I mean can we do that and we're just trying to report the facts. We're not trying to take sides here when there's billions in the pot and the kitty here we'll talk to Charles Barkley and our number three a little bit more eight four or four. Two zero four rich is the number down but Chilling out right here. On the rich Eisen show green room couches. "MVP Obviously Asleep heisman trophy winner from my From my Alma Mater Michigan Great Chat with him You get if you missed any of it. You can go to our youtube page which is just a We we we love seeing the numbers on our youtube. Page show You could go down an algorithm wormhole by the way great band. Not a fantasy team named out. I I think that I think Donald Mike my guy. James Dolan opened up for for Algorithm Ormeau only because he owns the venue. Yeah it's well done. That's a great line right there Bruce FELDMANS GONNA join us here in Studio In just a matter of moments to talk about college soot ball that but some of the things we did not hit with desmond including His scoop with the athletic today that the browns are all in on urban Meyer and can't wait to chat with him on that our number three Charles Barkley is going to join me to On the passing of of David Stern who I met just a couple couple of times and I just knew when I was talking about because I didn't cover an NBA AT ESPN I was. I didn't baseball and boxing Stewart. Dan Patrick where the host of Sports Center for most of the NBA stuff. While I was there and when I did meet him I just knew that you had to be buttoned up completely I was totally intimidated humiliated by the guy. I'm not GonNa lie and then when I met him when I was out here for the NFL network. It was when there was an NBA All Star game out here and there was some event that was happening. I met him in the lobby of a hotel and chatted with him and just went up to him and talk to him and I don't remember exactly what he said to me because again I was intimidated by etes and he told me towards the end of the conversation. He enjoyed watching what I was doing on the NFL network and said something to the effect. I don't remember the exact words words that I chose the wrong network to leave. ESPN to work for fully intimating the NBA TV that he that he had helped create and launch. Should have been the spot for me and I almost as well. You didn't offer me anything. You know. Commissioner I just decided to keep my mouth shut. Just laugh and move on somebody who had far more interaction with this man Because he was covering the NBA one of the top and his profession. When I was at? ESPN formerly of the Washington Post Philadelphia Inquirer so many years with TNT now the editor in chief of the athletic DC. He wrote a great piece. You should check out right now He's David Aldridge back here on the rich Eisen show. How are You d a good man? How are you doing happy New Year to you too? I give view the floor on your memories of David Stern first blush now that he's Passed on at the age of seventy seven David. Well you know it's it's kind of hard to kind of encompass all of it and you know a soundbite he was a consequential person With regard to do a sport which is now the second most popular sport on earth behind soccer and he had a lot to do with that both domestically and internationally You know people have asked me over the last twenty four hours or so something some virk variation of well. Well he Michael Jordan Magic Johnson Larry Bird and and I I grant you all of that. That's exactly true. He was very fortunate that not only. Hey those players but Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing and Isaiah Thomas and John Stockton and Carl Malone all of those players came into the league basically at the things that He created the platform upon which all of those players became superstars. He was was the guy that created opportunities for people to see those players. Not only on the court but also be able to see them off the court soon be able to watch them on videos to be able to watch them around the world with the rights deals with the NBA made with all the various countries. Choose see them in Olympic competition on the enormous stage with the Dream Team All of those things were because David. Let's turn one of those things to happen or at least was able to make them bigger I I asked people frequently if if Mike Trout was walking down Hollywood and vine how much notice when he wouldn't get a lot of attention And that's not a critique of baseball all but it just tells you that you know it doesn't happen in every sport with every superstar Um and it didn't the NBA under start. So how did he do it because is you know obviously the NFL And and and it's star players. There's the issue in many different ways Also face mask ask just in front. You don't see the face of the player in the same way that obviously you would for for Major League Baseball And there is nothing out there there except the player on an NBA court and the uniform. He's wearing what. What did stern actually do? Well the important thing I think the biggest thing was that he put the attention on the court. I mean you remember when he got there. There was that infamous. La Times story that said seventy five percent of the League was on drugs the the games were on tape delay so even if you were an NBA fan. I remember watching Finals Games at eleven thirty at night You know if you wanted to watch them. Because that was the only way to watch them He instituted the salary cap which allow teams pre all all teams is really to be able to field competitive teams because the Lakers weren't spending four times as much on salaries everybody else You know the main thing was that he put the emphasis on the game and on the floor and let people see his players. See those players. You know do what they do which is performance incredibly incredibly high levels so I think that was the first thing you know. In addition to that he really pushed the League's corporate sponsors the answers to use players in advertisements. That was not normal when he did that. You didn't think black players selling shoes user selling soft drinks or selling hamburgers. They did. That didn't happen. You know he was able to do that through his whatever. Force personality intimidation Dacian threat to go somewhere else. negotiator businessman as well as you know an entertainment guy but NBA players started being seen on commercials. That happened because David Stern you know. And that was A huge change in terms of to your point people recognizing nizing these star players in this sport whereas in other sports they did not. They weren't giving those types of opportunities as long as we're kinda hitting the way back machine as well David. I mean just a a year after he became commissioner. Was the famed eighty five draft. We're Patrick Ewing He pulled the envelope out of the Ping Pong Ball. All I guess terrain if you will and out of the envelope logo was the the Knicks logo You know there's still so much oliver or stoning about that. Do you think there was any any. There's any smoke to that fire about. What happened in that eighty-five draft with you go into the next as I've often said wretched the NBA? And the business of conspiracies. It really sucks at it okay. That's great if if if if it was all about don't make New York good. How's that working out? You know what I mean you know it was all about making Chicago good. How's that worked out since Jordan left you know I mean so? It's it's it's ridiculous and and you know it's easy to say because you don't require any proof and if someone says this is ridiculous and here's why that's just more evidence of a conspiracy among people who believe and those sorts of things so there's nothing you can do to keep people from from doing that every year before the draft. If the Knicks the Lakers are involved. They're going to get the first pick we all know what's rig and then when they don't get the first pick like neither of them got last year and they didn't get the second pick either people say well they're just doing this to make New Orleans good because New Orleans Los Anthony Me Davis. Yeah because the real emphasis of the NBA has to make sure the New Orleans market continues to thrive. I mean come on so you can truck in those things if you one I don't believe in that I would never say never about anything right. You know the ability to pull that off require. The same amount amount of Belvedere would take to cover up the Kennedy assassination for the last fifty two which allows people still believe. David Aldridge here on the rich. Eisen show to me I'd say well you know one of the most important if not the most important things that David Stern did or his handling of a situation when he was commissioner was Magic Johnson Having to leave the game because of being HIV positive and then returning to the game. I've got Charles Barkley on an in our number three and I'm wondering what you can Bring to light about David stearns handling of that matter and its importance David well. There's no there's no question I really do believe that you know the NBA's response to Magic Johnson being HIV positive was one of the first. It wasn't for when the first but it was one of the first real turning points in terms of public awareness and understanding about HIV. Okay and AIDS Because look we all thought we all thought the same thing we conflated HIV AIDS. So if you had any of you had eight you're going to die. That's what we all thought thought back in the eighties. You know And so the League was able and that and it wasn't just that was not just crackpot theory there were NBA all stars. Who believe the same thing you know? Believe that if if magic sweated on them they could get HIV And so the League had to be very out front on that and and in saying that he was gonNA play not just in the not just in the All Star game but in the on the dreams heap. You know I mean that was. You can't fathom how big the Dream Team was in nineteen ninety two and the fact that he was allowed to play encourage the play on. That team was just a huge huge. I think turning point people's understanding and maybe empathy towards others who had HIV and AIDS and again stern was right at the center. Rows of the League's kind of evolution because it was not it was not a linear decision. It took them some time to reach that decision. It took them a few weeks to come to reset decision but after consulting with the top medical people at the time they did reach that decision and it was a true that he basically basically told some of the players in a meeting that he was in that That if if they didn't agree to let magic back in or at least be on board with.

"How much do you think are, I guess, to what extent do you think the NBA's success as a sport as an entity is tied to having these ongoing rivalries Beit between player or teams that, that sort of fans can tie themselves to you mention Blaker Celtics, and obviously, the Celtics. And pistons, do you think that contributes in a pretty major way to the league's health? I don't I don't think there's any doubt that the league would not have survived. If not for the overarching rivalry the one that saved the league in my opinion is bird and magic that is the one that set the stage for all of the others that followed including Isaiah and Michael, if not for bird and magic. I don't know that the NBA would have made it we all know, the litany of problems at the NBA had throughout the seventies, and the irony, of course, is that today, people say that they're tired of dynasties, and they're tired of the warriors, they want somebody else to win. And I consistently point out and nobody. Can refute? This is the most democratic small d era of the NBA was the nineteen seventies, you had seventeens when a championship during that decade seven different teams won championships during that decade and it was received. So well that the games were broadcast on tape delay. Yep. And you had stories in the LA times, it said, seventy five percent of the league's players were on drugs. So that's how much people enjoyed that democratic era where the Sonics when a championship and the bullets when a championship, and the Trail Blazers wanna championship, and the bucks wanted championship, and Boston when a championship and Golden State when a championship nobody watched it. Okay. So the NBA has always been built going back to Russel, and wilt on rivalries on one player versus one player or one team versus one team when it got back to rivalries, with burden magic the league began to flourish again and began to thrive again, and that catalyst created the decade. I think really turned the league's fortunes around that was the eighties with the Celtics winning three titles in the Lakers, winning five with bird in northeast. Big city, Boston and magic in. Out west in LA, you had coast to coast coverage in terms of fans wanting to root for one of those teams or one of the other, they either loved magic in hated the Celtics. They loved bird and hated the Lakers. So yet, something for everybody, and it was legitimate great basketball played at the ultimate level, and it's very important. I believe to me that both of those teams were teams. So it wasn't just bird scoring fifty points or magic scoring sixty it was the Celtics moving the ball around having the big three, having Dennis Johnson, and the Lakers was Showtime, which included worthy environ- Scott but also had Kareem at the back end and magic orchestrating all of it. And those two teams playing great team basketball. I think helped elevate the NBA helped bring the NBA back from the abyss. So certainly rivalries to me are the heartbeat of the NBA because most teams don't win championships less than ten teams have won more than eighty percent of all the championships in the history of the NBA. So this is nothing new usually few teams dominate. But what keeps the league, I think, vibrant and going is the strength of its rivalries between it's great teams..

"The clay conversation show david aldridge believes that the lakers will land either coli klay thompson or kemba walker and look as landing kemba walker really a landing the main whatever that's like getting yeah so the the reality is this is that as much as i think clay is really awesome and i think he'd be a perfect complement to the brian and great for the lakers and all that if you look at the warriors situation of the four guys i'm i'm in counting i'm not gonna demarcus in this equation yet of the four core guys if you had to tell me and you had to pick one as far as who's the most replaceable as crazy as this sounds it would probably be clay because what he would draymond does defensively and the ability to handle and and and get the assists and get guys involved and do all the little dirty work and the little things and things like that you could find another shooter that now maybe they won't be as good defensively maybe they won't be as good as shooter as clay but because you have steph and you have k d and you have draymond you could find the guy that can play that role and you adjust increase the usage for the other three this is fine this is going to sound crazy till you george and product to a lot of listeners but i tend to think that out of all the guys that are most replaceable katie is actually the one for work sipa reason and it's actually part of the narrative has why people think he will leave and that is they weren't without and they weren't convincingly without him they wants thirty three games without him they beat him with russell wes as teammate so to me katie is a luxury more so than the satiety if katie were to leave and they were to replace him with obviously a lesser talent but still ran the warriors system with draymond clay and steph i would dare say you know they were still be.

"Bay alarm what have you got to lose coors light colder cleaner and crisper for those who thirst and even steph curry many taught the david aldridge and nba tb early tonight he said game three is gonna test immaturity for all the things you in amino hasn't said he say hey if we want to put out foot on the throat in his basketball team i'm paraphrasing what he said then we can't go out there and do what we did in game two versus houston other gained three for example game four last year in the nba finals the mere fact that he understands that emits at the david aldridge clearly tells him once again clean allow golden state to be awake when they had them dead to rights potentially in game one before that over time the other factor in game three tomorrow night freddie and with with the agent orange hausky report right earlier tonight on the nba draft pregame show on espn and seven o'clock eastern time our where he's saying hey lebron could be looking team with paul george possibly out in la you know and we're already looking ahead to wears lebron going and they haven't lost a game at home yet and i am i'm a huge believer in in that old saying it's always a series until somebody loses at home even though the cavs did lose game one at home in round one nineteen and everyone had them written off in the nba finals again it's amazing that narrative right that it doesn't feel like they have any not even a punchers chance that gave them a punchers chance coming into this series because of lebron i didn't i said they're gonna get my hands up completely dead and i still do because they haven't lost at home yet i mean everyone had them written off against boston after being down to boston and golden state i totally agree with you but they still you would agree that everyone had boston taking care of the cavs after they were down to i think i think people didn't think.

"The spurs at a two games series lead k d spoke with tnt's david aldridge when it was done thank you very much kevin your coach said that the spurs punched your team in the mouth in the first half get off the debt you know we try to just play to their physicality i did a good job with the niners the ball is planned physical out the ball and they play with a lot of energy and passion first half and we have to do a better job of match nothing that third quarter we came out we got to turnovers and sparked a quarter we've got going a bit and you know we just tried to make good players on both ends got klay thompson going in the second half you know he doesn't need a lot so how did you create the space necessary to get him going coach great place you know in order for him to get a couple of strains and you know the mismatches and clay to knock down the shots and he did tonight from for the rest of the series they will be desperate as you know what has to travel with you as you play against them oh we gotta be focusing locked down from the beginning starting to practice the ball and just to get ready he's got prepare right and we'll be fine go out there and play hard we knows a hostile environment not play well at home nicaragua be behind him so we're looking forward to plano all right back you can thank you very much david aldridge of tnt with kevin durant now to the other side of the san antonio spurs down to win the series gregg popovich their head coach moments ago with the media coach is this some more discouraging loss for it because of what you got from aldridge and patty mills in the fact that it looked like you guys competed at a greater level than on saturday that'll put adjectives on losses lawsuit to win so got nothing to do with.

"Big contributing players to big time playoff teams the contracts worry huge and mainly lebrun goes to lakers he's still finds liu all day of former teammate maybe he he'd want him to stay who knows but magic johnson knows he needs to strippeddown mv lean going forward starting tomorrow night it also means to me that basel ball is indeed the pick well that's what i wanted to get to 'cause i understand the flurry of activity to get to lebron james that everybody wants to get to lebron james but if you trade and jalal russell has basically you're only playmaker it seems to say okay we're gonna draft lawns a ball and yet off yet david aldridge just reported that the lakers were willing to give up the number two overall pick to sacramento and get the number five in return and mike i don't think ball would drop to five so i am now in a position of saying to you i don't know what's really going on here i don't want the in the strategic moves on member i've been point guard to magic johnston likes a whole lot is the aaron fox always liked them like the entire college basketball season seems he would indeed be available in five because sacrament i was talking about getting in mid five i don't know that but i know that i know the magic johnson has light deer and fox all along maybe you knew that did you know that brooke lopez is the alltime leading scorer for the nets i had no idea that.
