Scott Kelly would turn me and say well. Dave you're the doctor. Would you think so for this particular set of circumstances now. I'm the leader and the other people on the team. You're listening to me and that's a form of leadership that I would refer to as distributed and it's basically recognizing all the different skills of the people that make up the team so as was a hospital. CEO Even though ultimately responsible for the organization if it was a financial issue I defer to my CFO. They know way more about finances than I do. I'm the CEO they're the CFO. It's their job so we defer to their input and I think that's really important to create a humble environment where people are willing to listen to each other and recognize nuys each other's skills and certainly give credit where credit's due we often talk about the difference between the arrogant confidence in humble humble confidence in people that we watch and displays such arrogance. It's difficult to to follow dumb. No one wants to be around them and that was one of the things that really struck me with you with you. When I first met you may be during nine years ago. It was was that humble confidence that you had whenever you spoke and I was impressed by death in one of the chapter in your book. the title dieted the title of the chapter. Is the longest two minutes of my life. Tell us where you were and what that was like because I have a stance that that also helped with your humility. love to for you to tell us aww that those two minutes when you lift off to go into space on the space shuttle the last thing that you do on the checklist is at t minus two minutes and you have two minutes to think about what's going to happen and of course two minutes later you're going to be sitting on top of seven and a half million pounds of rocket thrust taking you from being stationary flat on your back on the surface of the earth in the spatial to eight and a half minutes later traveling twenty five times the speed of sound which is roughly five miles house or eight kilometers every second. That's faster no bullet and that's a remarkable ride so when I was in training I was very curiously. What do you think about in that two minute minute time period because we've all seen what happened with challenger we all know intellectually and saw what happened with Columbia and things this is pretty scary so around around the astronaut office in never flown in space. I wanted to know what people had been in space. Were thinking so they said some people William what's the longest two minutes of your life. It's incredible incredible. It seems like it just goes on and on forever and time slows down and then there's other people who say it say the fastest two minutes your life seeing you know. I just closed the visor. My spacesuit sued I turn the oxygen then we're lifting off a two minutes just disappear and then there's those really pragmatic type C C. It's two minutes just look at the clock so for me I remember lying flat on my back t minus two close advisor turn the oxygen on and looking straight up out of the overhead windows thinking wow what a beautiful day for launch but I had an additional task to add turn on the cockpit voice recorder so I did that and took roughly fifteen twenty seconds or so and then being very type A. I checked that again and then had the check it a third time so my first minute was basically turning on the cockpit voice recorder but then I'm back to enjoying the view and then at t minus thirty seconds. I had this huge reality. Check you know the literally within thirty seconds or so. I'M GONNA be sitting on top of a controlled explosion but by the time my brain was able to process that information it was t minus six point six seconds. The main engines had started were monitoring for performance of the main engines solid rocket boosters and kicked within six seconds later and at that point. You know you're going someplace really fast. Wow who women experience and yet you your journey really speaks to the fact that that with the right mindset and capabilities anything is possible. Can you share with us for those with a fixed mindset. what you would say to those people so you know even today. If you read in the business literature there's people who have a fixed mindset and then there's those that have the growth mindset people who Zi opportunity people who are willing to have bold visions and go out and try and accomplish really audacious goals and I think in the business world having having that growth mindset is probably something that generates greater corporate success and having a fixed mindset. Many people would say no. That's impossible possible if I listened to the people that told me it was impossible. I never would have done any of the things that I did. I would not have become an astronaut because I was told that was impossible. When my marks weren't very good I was told it was impossible to get into medical school. Fortunately I just didn't listen to those people. I dismiss them. All and I think the most important thing to remember from this has don't let other people define your dreams for you no matter what age you are there your dreams so if you're eighty five and you decide do you. WanNa start. Singing in a choir goes singing choir for goodness sakes. You know life is short and we have an opportunity to live our lives to the fullest. I'd say embrace the Opportunity Fortuna is such an important message not to let other people's limitations of what they think people both of become your limitations talking about the AH capabilities debt we have you also talked about followership when I first met you you you were talking so much about leadership followership so where did that come from as astronauts were given a lot of training and in leadership that they send us to the National Leadership School where we learn not only leadership but followership and followership first of all. It's an active process. A lot of people people think oh my goodness thank. I'm I'm not the leader of the team. I just part of the team so I I don't work as hard well. That's not true at all as a member of a team you have responsibilities as to the team you have to come prepared having read the material if there's material to read ringing your ideas etcetera so followership is an active process in some cases it requires courage if I tell the senior team that I'm working with the hospital or in any CEO environment that I want you to speak up some people feel intimidated to speak up and give the CEO bad news but you know what I would rather hear the bad news and be able to figure out a solution than not hear the bad news so so we want people to be able to leverage this opportunity to courageously contribute and a multi multi professional interdisciplinary collaborative collaborative environment. That's really to me what followership Saul vote and it's those environments that really inspire creativity and innovation when your co creating together regardless of level within the organization. There's no question on the speaking circuit I do corporate development and things and often will be with a group of thirty people and I'll ask them a question and nobody in the room wants to answer. I don't want to be embarrassed in front of their friends and this. Is You know we talked followership. This is your followership. Moment is get your your obligation is now to answer. The question doesn't matter who does it doesn't matter the answers correct. It's an opportunity to have dialogue around this and then once you point that out to people then they realize oh yeah you're right. You know like I really should be speaking up and contributing the I don't really get a chance to ask this often. They don't know many people people that have lived in space and lived under waters about what it was like to also live underwater. You described that whether in space or under I see the majestic beauty of our planet with something you came to cherish more and more with each mission. So what was it like you know I was really lucky to be able to explore explore both final frontiers final frontier of space but also the final frontier of exploring the undersea world. Living under water is an amazing experience. The biggest biggest difference between living underwater and being in space is underwater. You have neighbors all the fish neighbors so winter outside on the wreath and you're swimming around and you see a school of fish. Besides it's really an incredible thing and we we go out and do what's called a dawn dive. Hugo before the sunrise is it's generally five thirty thirty in the morning pitch black and you know you've got flashlights with you and things to make sure you don't get lost and we're using these guiding. God ropes on the bottom of the ocean and things to to get to where we need to get to on the reef so he tether off for lying on the bottom of the ocean and you see this. BIL- phosphorescent plankton swimming around beside you glowing in the dark just absolutely spectacularly beautiful and then as the sun comes up the water goes from being black black and you can't see anything to then being a very deep deep purple and then a lighter purple and even more later purple and then finally it's shade of blue and then ultimately becomes this beautiful Blue Turquoise environment you look up at the surface purpose and it's absolutely spectacular and you realize what a gift we have to live on such a beautiful planet in I. I wrote a book for children. It's called destination estimation space a guide to living on other planets in the solar system well living on Mars would be a lot of fun but clearly the best planet live on our solar system is the earth you know when I read your book I I was it was just spellbound by how you described when you were in space or underwater in deep sea it's it was so captivating and so your your roles have evolved right and when we talk about the world of work evolving dismissed this means that capability that is required of our leadership roles to also evolve. What do you feel the most important capabilities for leaders today in the future. It's a great question I would say lifetime same love of learning and a passion to continuously develop yourself the when I retired as a hospital. CEO Oh prior to my retirement maybe a month or so before it was going to retire was giving a mentoring session to twenty. Mba students that came up to the university you and which is just fantastic you know the they're all university. Students are incredibly talented really really smart people and they've they're reading the business literature and things so we're having this fantastic dialogue and towards the end of it. I asked the group how many hours a week do think I spend reading and learning and trying to develop myself and one person put up their hands while you're at the end of your career your boat to retire. I'd say probably zero they said well you know actually spend between ten and fifteen hours a week developing myself and I think that that's something that's is an opportunity for all of us to think about this lifetime love of learning about continuously improving. I'm one of these people that I love buying books so whether playing the guitar whether it's going hiking or learning how to water ski or whatever I'll go by book and I read about that I get all passionate what about it then I try and learn from the experiences of others generally go and take courses get trained from people who actually know what they're doing but it sat lifetime commitment for self development development that I think is really important and it's the one thing that aligns all astronauts astronauts like everybody else. There's a wide range of different personalities every astronaut I know Oh loves learning and it's really a lifetime commitment to self improve. We never stop learning yeah. It's really living with wondering continuing need to be curious to inspire that lifelong learning. I have to ask just as an aside. Are you good Golfer Norma terrible golden but I'm working on it but I bet you have a Gulf literature so in addition to your successful career. You also have a very busy family. Life and your wife also has a successful career as a commercial airline pilots.

"I'm Dave Williams with Amy Shadrach. Good to have you with us on this Tuesday morning looks like we are going to get a little bit rain today. Maybe maybe not it's kind of the way brands foot. Yeah. Yeah. It's storms are bail barely possible. During the afternoon. He's talking about North Texas, specifically the Metroplex. Of course, there are other parts of the state western Texas to eastern Texas, where there is there are going to be storm systems blowing through today to develop into huge hail makers and even possibly strings of tornadoes. But again that is not expected at all in our area. So we just kinda pass it along with what you're seeing in the clouds. We may not even get rain. But it is going to be cloudy like, this, can I tell you a happy story that happened to be at this, please. Because I'm a lot of times, we we tell stories in someone who's done something where we're selling your parking space in line when we have the microphones off during commercial breaks and stuff, you're crabby. Don't lie. That's not true. Are your pants on fire? So I'm coming out of the grocery store, and I'm putting my bundles in the in in the trunk and there's an older gentleman that that comes along. And I'm done emptying my wagon as I call it cart or shopping cart card from Boston. Yes. And he said, I'll take that. And put it away for you. Well, how nice was that all of this guy? Estimate. Maybe sixty okay late fifties. Maybe sixty. So I thank you probably thought you were hot, mama. No. I'm just saying it's being nice. You get to be my age. You can do things like that. And women don't feel like you're hitting on him. He said, I'll take that. He was going that way to put it away in the in the slot. It is nice. You have people who want to help you when they take the card from you. When you're finished with it and take it into the store. Right. So they have no Tyrian motive he had no alterior motive. Yes. Thank you to him. Nice to hear that kind of thing. Again, you know, coming from California, maybe listened. Maybe he didn't know it was me. Yeah. Now. He's going. Wow. Wow. That why? No seriously. We came from California more than seven years ago. And I can't I still can't get over. How much nicer more considerate people are here. And I think a lot of Texans complain about getting cut off and horns honking and all that stuff. Believe me, and I'm not I'm not picking on California. But there are other parts of the country to where you would be stunned at how. Just. Oblivious, people are to your your situation to. Yeah. To your situation and your very existence. There's a guy in Colorado by the name of Levi Roberts. He's thirty seven years old, and he is a doofus. The picture of him earlier. Amy Facebook bail because you look at this guy, and you go, okay, I'm going to go a couple of blocks away. This guy is nuts. He tried to rob the well, he did rob the same Dairy Queen twice in less than two hours. Why did rob a Dairy Queen? If you're going to run the risk of going to jail. Wouldn't you look for something with a little bit better payoff, neck a Bank or something then a Dairy Queen twice in less than two hours? How much how much stuff do you think they sold since you rip them off the first time and both times he was there. He tried to hijack a car any failed both times. But the first time when officers responded, they had no luck finding him. So he did a good job disappearing. The I get away. But not the second time. I. They got him. He's in a blizzard of trouble. And that's where the whole. Yes. Some fifty five KLIF traffic.

"Right now. I'm Dave Williams. Amy's not here today. She had a tough time. I'll tell you what she was out of out of town for all of last week on family business with her family and that took him on a couple of airline flights. And I'm telling you next time, I have to fly someplace I'm going to get my reservation, and I'm going to hang up phone, and then I'm going to call my doctor's office and make an appointment because I know I will need it after I get off the airplane. She's sick. With a terrible cold tweeted us at two o'clock in the morning said she's got a fever. So hopefully, my good friend and partner will be back with me tomorrow. But any case we soldier on? All right now about the about the. The Muller report. And all the all the inter workings of the paper, shuffling and the accusations. And the subpoenaed documents and witnesses related to the Trump administration's decision to add a citizenship. Questioned to the twenty twenty cents is Linda Kenyon in Washington following an force. Good morning. Linda, good morning. Yeah. So tell us about this. I think this is kind of new on most people's radar the twenty twenty cents a citizenship question. Yeah. Apparently, the house oversight committee today is going to issues Pena for testimony from various people involved in the decision to add a citizenship question on the twenty twenty centers, including commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, the controversy with that is the census is supposed to count the number of people in a district that has a lot to deal with drying congressional districts providing essential services to us districts and so forth. And the problem is that if it's not an accurate count than those those folks can be underserved. If people who for instance, are asked if they are citizens decide that they're afraid to answer that question. So not only are they under served, but all the other people who are citizens could be under served as well. Just the sentence down every ten years. If there's a mistake done in terms of population on your one, can you imagine what's going to happen on your ten? The flip side of that question is that why wouldn't you want to know who is a citizen, and who isn't just interested in your particular district so on and on we go, but apparently this citizenship question that was added to the this is the first time it has been done. And and so the congress wants to know why the the question was added in the first place. Well, why wouldn't immigrants legal or otherwise want to answer? The question. Is it a fear that they're going to be rounded up and hauled back to wherever they came from or something? Yes. Indeed. That is in fact, the fear and right now even a lot of legal immigrants apparently are afraid to answer that question. And so they are in the shadows. If you will and that doesn't do well for particular congressional district in terms of drawing district who who these folks would be representing again essential services that we all pay into that the federal government provides. Yeah. Well. Well, I don't know, you know, census census questionnaires, they ask you all kinds of stuff, including a lot of personal stuff about about religion and race and so forth, and how many TV's you have in your home and stuff like that. This does seem like it would be central to proper government representation. Yeah. Yeah. And and then if it's not a proper representations in what happens when as I say, if it's done every ten years if the couches are on year one and by the time he gets year ten it's really skewed. All right. Well, Linda, thank you very much for bringing us up to date on that. There's Linda Kenyon in Washington. The F is dead. The alliance of American football is out of business. We've got more of that coming up in just a couple of minutes right now, seven forty five and with traffic.

"Jeff along with Dave Williams vote. My wife is listening because this is going to make her very happy. And I don't mean to to find joy in other people's misery. But you know, a few years ago, I went to work at a job in Chicago. And she didn't really want to move out there. Simply because of the weather. That's the only reason right. It's a beautiful city is a wonderful city. I didn't stay very long. So we didn't have to move there. I went without her. So she's just like, I just don't I don't wanna live where it snow, and I don't know. I don't wanna live where they've got. Icy wind and right now in Chicago, it is twenty one below zero at all.
