"So if you look at the end of 71 actually, they are beginning to pick up results. So the kind of the signs were there. But yeah, yeah, they were quite evenly matched the lotus with the Ferrari and the tyrol in 72. In terms of raw pace, but the lotus was just a much better overall race car, I think. And all these years later, we're still talking about tires as a central issue in Formula One, but it was no different in 1971, 72. Was there anything about his age? His lack of experience almost in that he was perhaps more malleable, adaptable to driving cars, unlike some of the older drivers who were perhaps a little slower to learn, or is that not the case? I think it depends on the individuals. But certainly, if you look at MO's career, adaptable is probably fair to say it's one of his strengths because once his F one career ended he went off to IndyCar, one 8500 and the IndyCar championship. So I think it's down to the individual abilities and their willingness to go with it. I think he formed a pretty strong relationship with Colin Chapman as well. Maybe not quite the Clark Chapman thing, but I think even Colin said, because Emma talked about this from the interview. He was going to say, you know, I've got close to drives before and it's painful when things go wrong. And they get killed because obviously you lost Clark and rent quite close together. So I think it was the right person right team right time. But I think also we should probably mention you might be getting on to it Martin, but Jackie Stewart, the other opportunity that comes along in 1972 is that Jackie Stewart by the end of 71 is the best ride in the world. I think probably without any question. Once rinse killed, there's not MOs are coming guy, Jackie X he's probably the next one, he's quite close. Pedro Rodriguez until he was killed in 71. So Stuart is the king coming into 72. But a combination of I think the lotus being better, am I being ready for it? And of course, Jackie got duodenal ulcer during the year. So if you look at a couple of his performances before he misses the French Grand Prix I think it is. Yeah, he has no, that's where he returned. So he missed the Belgium Grand Prix. He has a couple of years, a couple of uncharacteristic errors, not really on it, not feeling well. He misses a race. So I'm not in any way trying to put a damper on ammo championship campaign. But I think that gives an opportunity, but I did do some stats. I think you'll like. So I went through each race by race to work out who was ahead of who in their head to head before mechanical intervened or they finished. And of the 9 races that I thought you could make a call on. It was 5 four to MO. That's a deserving champion. But interestingly, when Stuart comes back from the French Grand Prix, the number of points here in ammo scores exactly the same. The absolutely neck and neck. Autocourse and also what both put Stuart number one in their driver ratings at the end of the year. But am I took the title? I think that's, I think that's probably that's probably fair. They were quite head and shoulders above the others. Ix was good in the Ferrari, but it didn't finish enough races, wasn't consistent enough. So yeah, you mentioned Colin Chapman a final word on him and the lotus. Of course, he had a reputation for building a car which would get to the flag and just get to the flag. That was his philosophy of why would you have a car that would do any more than it needs it needs to do and perhaps have a reputation for fragility in places. But what that car had evolved to a stage of, what was the reliability like in the 72 season? How did that benefit MS and Philip? Yeah, it was pretty good. It was pretty on a par for the time that they weren't as reliable as cars as we come to expect them now, but it was on a par with the others. I think that was a combination of lotus being able to turn their attention back to the 72 after the turbine, the turbine thing. Beefing up things for the suspension and sorting out with the tyres because obviously with the stick side, you're putting more loads through everything. So even if you had a reliable car, you're suddenly putting more through it and you'll break your finding new things to break and as you say, Chapman was always towards the ad lightness. Quote, he was always, if he could get away with something that thin, then he would get away with it. So, but I think by then they'd hone the car enough. It was thin, but it was thick enough. And I think I don't think Emma was ever known as a car breaker. Yeah, kind of a nice smooth him and Ronnie Peter and obviously the teammates, the following year, you had Emily that could set the car up and was kind of the almost the mature head at that point, even though Ronnie joined the same time Ronnie would drive it sideways, but faster. And they were great sort of combination, really, although they both end up losing the championship. But yeah, and I think by 72, the car was ready, and I loved it. It was the curry pictures best car, best car of his whole career. He comes back to drive because in fact, you mentioned the lotus launch a month or two ago. They actually also classic team lotus Clive Chapman Colleen's Colin son. They got all the existing low to 72 chassis together for that and the gather gathered them together. Some fans I was hoping to go to that, but unfortunately, couldn't in the end. But yeah, it's in some brilliant, brilliant photos of MO there with all the 72s behind him, which is really very, very cool. Bear in mind that he also won the world champion McLaren M 23, which is another great F one design. I think that gives you an idea of just how a one he felt with that car. You always want to beat your teammate as the first person because they're an equal machinery. So who was his teammate in 72? It was Dave walker. Who? Exactly. Our listeners are asking. He was an interesting story that I'd really like to know more about. So this is a challenge for me for the future perhaps, but yeah, he was quite highly rated coming up through the ranks like most of them are when they get to F one, but he had an awful season. I think maybe there are times when obviously you build yourself around your best asset, don't you as a team. So maybe he just he got all the love, but I'm sure lotus mechanics of people at the time would say, well, no, that's not, that's not why it happened, but he, yeah, he didn't he scored a point. It completely no, he didn't go point. He could barely finish in the top ten. I think if it was on 2022 scoring he'd have scored three points. Destroyed by his teammates. And then left four to one. They put rain even early in for a couple of races who I think did a probably did a better job. It was kind of actually he was a rival if you like compatriot of Ronnie Peterson. Who then joined the team and then suddenly had two number ones in the team which eventually put him nose out of joint. Not because of anything Ronnie did later on famously because I think everyone loved Ronnie Pete and but now I put a Dave walker yeah that's the sort of the sad story really. For whatever reason it just didn't happen for him when he got his chance in F one. Right, coming up on the podcast. We will find out how the 72 season went and what eventually won it and made Emerson Fittipaldi a record breaker. And find out about the crash on the way to the track in Italy that had something Italian fans even stealing parts of the car from the roadside.

"And we're back on the alcohol. Podcast dave walker joined by gina. Kelly and we're going through your voicemails in reaction to the falcons loss in week. Two of the twenty twenty one. Nfl season against division rival the tampa bay buccaneers. We've gone through five of these. And yeah i it's about what i expected You're gonna love the last one. We're going to close out with a bang just for people believe me for those i previously so i know it's coming ahead of time that way like we're not getting like an infomercial in in the voice mail because it has happened before but Let's just jump into the next one. Let's see where this goes. What's going on this falcon here. Hey see potential name. That's something i couldn't say. We warn we gotta take the with around. Sometimes you know Talk about three phases. Though the puncher come on man you gotta give them something that put us behind. And i think that kinda hurt us when we got a little momentum you know they kind of gave it right back to so Kudos may feel this week. No he didn't get totally embarrassed. But let's talk about matt hennessy. I mean come on. I mean he. He's blocking dead. People like the kid who who knew that he grew up to become matt. Hennessy domain. no we got outmatched. We were outmatched but we weren't outplayed. I don't feel like a like you know. Playing probably one of the best teams ever could be you know from top to bottom and we gave them gave them fix and i mean mad some food and recessions at the end but i mean i i was impressed and i've seen the identity starting to know heads so let's just build off of that in the like doors michael as man gotta have face a first of all. I want this guy to please call back every single week. i think. I think that i need to hear that you know i mean what he said is correct. I definitely did see signs of what this team could be life. Keep saying like at least they had some fight in them So yeah. I really enjoyed hearing from that gentleman. That was nice uplifting message we get along those means days. I will do to say matt. Hennessy is the kid from the six sense has gotten that one has disrupted my week. Wait the most spectacular voicemail mail. I just absolutely loved it. Start to finish g. We've talked about this before. And i just wanted to reiterate this One of her friends on twitter. Betsy has said this before she. She intimated perfectly like falcons fans on twitter. Just have the best sense of humor and obviously in reaction to having to deal with this team but voicemails like that. I think sort of back that up you know where we just absolute comedy brilliance falcons loss. Also i my adopt the phrase. He got sometimes. You gotta take the lemon with the lime. yeah appropriate. i think for for a lot of things in life. Absolutely great voicemail. All right i think this is our first international voicemail coming up next Which is really cool. We have quite a few falcons fans in the uk but also in all of europe. Like we've got a really big contingent of falcons fans in germany and this fellow is calling a belief from The norwegian area. I won't be half dozen. Or so. European falcons stance. That's the pull another long story of unfortunate events which led to a fifteen year old norwegian kid watching his favorite team blow at twenty eight to three lead at six. Am now school now. It should be noted that before the year. I was not hopeful. The falcons of instilled a great deal of pessimism me over the years. And i have a sizable amount. Riding on the falcons to win under a seven and a half games as such. I wasn't a horrified by week..

"Podcast dave walker. I'm with my co host. Gina forever matt online. Kelly almost said thomas. Just like our last voicemail. Threw me off We're listening to what you our listeners. Readers have to say about the falcons eagles game and if nothing else. This has been incredibly entertaining. I love all of you. Thank you for listening to the podcast. By the way we've been around for several years and We don't say this enough. And i know gene feel the same way but we really really appreciate you guys listening and You make this possible and we appreciate the support. You've given us all these years. Absolutely all right next voicemail. Here we go Just let them speak for themselves. I'm the south cans. Fan and from idaho which sounds weird by itself but It's it's been and i've been through you know younger person. But i've seen seen some things for sure talking sin and my real short life span the so far but There are all kinds of performance was really something else really really something else. Rivals that of Some of the worst performances from those super bowl years. But alas i hope why because next season live it really good draft pick. Those are my thoughts. Thank you bye-bye one game in. We're talking about draft. Picks bulkin falcons fan I do love the beginning of the season. Because you know we just don't have enough to go off of yet for any team. I mean it's it's impossible to know how this is going to shake out. And the falcons really did not give us much. Feel good about on sundays. So i do completely understand the overreacting in that direction. Just like oh you know top five drag here we Nfl economic drafted a quarterback. Maybe not that could workout. Who knows of my word. I got nothing to add to that. That was absolutely perfect. Next voicemail here we go just bad. Nece i wanna know though. Why asti falcons rally the other night. I saw michael vick in person. And i love my colleagues. Don't get me wrong. But where's the love for demo anderson. Why does this franchise not love. The dirty birds needed now. Talk about that. 'cause i don't wanna talk about game adults for moving forward week too. Thanks guys. that's that's actually an interesting question. I do not have an answer for that You know jamali. Under sending a heck of a nice guy. Obviously firmly entrenched in falcons history. He's had some pretty generally minor run-ins with the law. You know obviously. So has michael vick and you know i'm not i'm not making any kind of commentary about that. I mean you know. Serve his time. I've talked to him since about the work that he continues to do to help. Prevent dogfighting and You know i feel like he has He has atoned and learned from most importantly learned from what he went through there. But yes so. I don't know if it's You know his run-ins with law in the past air if there's some other kinds of bad blood there but i do think that that's an interesting question. Yeah i really do not know the answer to that. I mean literally the player that invented the dirty bird And was the. They're bringing back the dirty thing this year and henry ford so actually it would make a lot of sense to bring them all into something you a hundred percent and he was the running. Back ezekiel over eighteen hundred yards in the year. The falcons went to their first super bowl. He was absolutely dominant in that offense and unfortunately his career ended with two straight years with an acl tear which was advocating. But yeah i actually do under the same thing. It's such a great point. And that's why we love these voicemails. We get such interesting points like this but jamal jamal anderson with three as defensive mentioned all anderson we all. I think that makes sense to all of us. It makes sense but he's not being brought back for special events and being honored. Thanks but jamal. Winston the running back to as that one is confused. The the wrong jamal. Think the falcons have actually tried to erase his name from wikipedia in fact so to be fair. Alkan says it that we have two jamaa andersen's and one of them is somebody that we never once again as as our favorite writer. Fuck colleague would say matt chambers. He's a bust who next. What our longest voicemail. This one almost hit three minutes. I'm going to let it play out because there's some good points here But here we go yeah. Hey alcoholic Matt year twenty three been a fan my whole entire life And i'm i'm quite. I'm i'm sick of this team. You guys Is just so tough i. I'm already not a huge fan of what this regime has done in the front office. I mean just. I mean obviously we have to stick it out and see where they go. obviously more than one way to skin a cat but just starting right out the gate. I'm just not a huge fan of anything they've done. I mean you know. They drafted right tackle doping. They would change his position. Lately was making sense expecting for him to be manageable which didn't make any sense. I just feel like there's some delusion when in this front office that they can just kind of Stern by in and and that's going to be okay and it's just not Between you know mayfield looking god awful and and you know. I wasn't a fan of the draft. Either out by you know the thing which may take that. There was also other guards. There was other guards on the board at that time. Worry play injury autism last. Why not just take one of them. Wide say somebody else in and completely switched them completely swisher position but anyway I was on the justin feels train Just the quarterback and you go on from there. Looking team is going nowhere next couple years. You're going to need multiple giraffes to even think about competing competing. And by that on that ryan will have been close to forty and we who the hell knows what he's going to look like ben so why even risk that and keep kicking the can down the road anywhere in you know. Everybody says oh you. Can't trade them this much money and all of this all. There's not get the financial aspect. But i feel like if you're gonna trade him you're gonna trade mean you're going to have to eat the money you're gonna have to eat the dead cap anyway so it doesn't matter just waiting isn't gonna do anything so i was. You know. definitely on just accuse train and then you know just being metal just middling. I think that's the final thing is just being average and and you know not being good enough to where you're drafting and twenty eight or thirty two or something like that but not being bad enough to where you're drafting in you know and i just think that maybe not just the top on the top or something like that but you know at sixteen seventeen. What would you really expect so I think that that's purgatory in. Its own and so I appreciate you guys Listening so Cheaper bulk reward. Wow there was a lot there gina. Yeah he something released. The doubts me at that i think is valid. Point was his He mentioned Jalen mayfield having to switch positions and david as you know that is one of my biggest pet peeves when people are like oh offensive. Linemen are interchangeable because all the positions are very different actually and is a very big adjustment to from playing. You know exterior lines imperial lines so Yeah i think that you know. A lot of people have questions about what they were thinking with. Mayfield and i think that after what we saw him do on sunday by those fair and i had this conversation with someone else recently as well the the whole mindset and to be fair this is not just the falcons but there is a mindset in draft..

"Podcast official podcast of atlanta falcons on the sp nation. Podcast our dave walker. In the wake of the falcons absolutely ugly loss to the philadelphia eagles in week. One of the twenty twenty one. Nfl season rim. Take a look at the players that actually played well to shortlist or three up three down. And we're going to look at stats in particular some of the advanced stats from. Pf who played well. Who didn't play. Well i suspect you guys when the who some of those things are. but let's jump into it. I i wanna start with our three up in. Our three down from writer will mcfadden that the alcoholic. You covered that monday at the site guys. Go there to check it out real quickly. I think this is a good list to start off with starting with the guys who are actually up because Let's start with the positive in this case is a few of them. As there were the first one lists has to be half back quarter l. patterson he was arguably one of the biggest surprises on sunday. He looked like an absolute stud at running back. He was a phenomenal runner. He averaged nearly eight yards per carry on. Just seven carries fifty four yards total He looked better than our lead back. Mike davis and i don't want to throw davis under the bus here because the offensive line which we'll get to in a little bit was not doing him any favors. But patterson showed that in a traditional running back role. They weren't using him in a gadget type capacity. They were using him as a pure runner and he was getting it done and kudos to him. I think he deserves more touches. Going forward a look forward to seeing what he can do on a regular basis with even more carries. Hopefully he can get into that. Ten twelve maybe fifteen. Carry mark Periodically just so we can see if that productivity can continue but really impressed with what patterson did second on wheels list linebacker jacob to yo to mariner. Now he ended up with the only sack of the day. And that's fine. I think This is one of those guys that for where he came from undrafted. And what we've asked from him. I think he has absolutely given us more than what we could have expected And honestly he's he's a guy that has carved out a decent role for himself now. Should he be a starter probably not. That's an indication of the quality of this defense but realistically as rotational guy. I think we're getting just a ton of good stuff. From jacob and really proud of his development within the falcons organization over the past few years third on the list last name will mention. here is offensive. Lineman chris lindstrom with everything that went bad on the offensive line. He was actually one of the few bright spots on the offensive line. He and jake matthews really the two guys. We expected to be the stalwarts on the offensive line. They held to that. They were incredibly reliable. They were the only two guys on the offensive line that had a decent afternoon and as a third year. Interior offensive lineman. It's nice that he's got that clamped down at this point even though he did face some difficult matchups in this game It looks like he's really beginning to round into very solid and maybe even better starter on the inside the offensive line now for the three down top of this list. It's going to come as no surprise. Offensive lineman jalen mayfield. We'll talk about his. Pf grade here a little bit but clearly you don't need the pf grades to see. This guy was absolutely outmatched for the entire afternoon. The interior pass rush with john. Hargrave fletcher cox. Clearly just overwhelmed. Mayfield over and over and over again. Matt ryan had little to the time of the pocket. The running game was decent enough So some credits him there. But as a pass blocker he was absolutely devastatingly. Bad how bad we'll get into that in just a little bit but jalen mayfield tops. The three downlist next after him. This one's interesting. But i can't can't argue it russell gauge and i don't think this is russell gauges fault. I think this is going to come back to what was happening with the lack of protection but also with arthur smith. He was not drawing up the plays to get gauge involved. Engaged probably had a favorable matchup Through portions of this game and You know this is a guy who expected to be wide receiver to on this offense this year and realistically he was invisible in this game he had. I think one target and it ended up being a ball that went out of bounds and gauge can be so much more than that. We saw that last year he had. There were seven hundred yards receiving. Whether or not he's a true wide receiver too. I think still remains to be seen but as an additional option in the passing game. I think he's a quality target. I think he's someone that matt ryan showed. He trusts already. And it's sort of criminal that he was completely invisible in this game Although to be fair most of our Receiving options were visible throughout this game. Because how bad the offensive lineman played throughout finally last name on this list. And it's not gonna come as a surprise but another interior offensive lineman this one center matt hennessy. And this is a guy you know he and jalen mayfield both. Were facing some really really good interior. Pass rushers and fletcher cox in giovan. Hargrave and i wanted to completely hold that against him. I don't think we have to write these guys off. We can hold multiple things to be true the same time. Hennessy and mayfield were absolutely dreadful. Impasse blocking And yet they're still reason to believe that with time they can turn into decent starters But in the short term we need that development to come quicker and sooner because we may lose matt ryan to injury if they continue to play this poorly and obviously the game looming on the horizon against the bucks. You have an absolutely fierce front four is it. Doesn't look like things are going to get any easier for these. Two offensive linemen We'll have to see what head coach. Arthur smith can do to help these guys improve in the week and or to adjust the scheme so that they're not exposed repeatedly like they were on sunday Hopefully that will get fixed. Hopefully the issues with these guys where penalties were concerned as well. We'll be addressed in this coming week but again or three up three down the guys that are at the top list quarter. Patterson jacob tokyo to mariner chris lidstrom the guys rounding out the bottom of the list. Jalen mayfield wide receiver. Russell gauge in the offensive. Lineman matt hennessy. Let's talk about those. Pf grades and i want to start with the offense. I want to start with the guys who actually held up there in the bargain and the name at the top of the list are highest graded. Pf offensive player was quarter. O- patterson zero surprise there. Twenty four total snaps. Seventy four point eight overall grade which is very good Next to him and this is something to watch in the coming week to see how this one plays out He only had nine snaps. So take this with a grain of salt. This obviously could just be small sample size and if you blow it up it could go south very quickly but offensive. Lineman drew dolman who they have listed here at left guard. Thinking took most of the snaps left guard nine snaps Our second highest graded offensive lineman sixty nine point. Four seventy three point one on the pass block one of our best pass blocking grades of the day so he played very well number three on the list..

It's dave walker. We're looking at the falcons versus eagles key matchups. And of course our prediction going into this first game the two thousand twenty one nfl season. I games in atlanta. This should be interesting all right. Let's talk about the eagles offense this one again. Let's start in the trenches. The eagles lost their longtime stalwart left. Tackle jason peters. He went to a different team but they sort of stumbled into what could potentially be a good starting left tackle for them for the future in jordan lada. He came in last year as a twenty eight seventh round draft. Pick originally drafted to play on the defensive side of the ball and last year really finish the year strong at left tackle and has given them a lot of hope that he could be the for their future. There so you know. I don't want to crown him yet. As a great left tackle but the potential looks like it's there at minimum. He played well twenty twenty. This could be where the falcons could try to explain a little bit. He's a bigger guy. three hundred forty six pounds according to pf some. Maybe dante tried to use his speed to get around him That remains to be seen now in on the other side lane johnson. It feels like he's been league forever. he was. He came out in two thousand thirteen. Really top notch right. Tackle for most of his time in the league Little bit of dip in performance last year some injuries and whatnot obviously hampered him and kept him out for the back half of the season but again equality right tackle. Hopefully he's back to health if you're an eagles fan and then on the inside brandon brooks at right guard Right now it's unclear. He missed all of twenty twenty It's unclear if he's gonna be ready to go for this game. He was one of the players on the injury report. If they have a backup there again that could be a spot. That the falcons target with someone like grady jarrett with bullard to try to get some interior. Push into to disrupt hurts. And of course we know that dean pees likes to blitz he likes that a gap blitz especially with the linebackers and safeties. That could be an area where they try to attack up the middle of this offensive line. Jason kelsey what can you say about this guy. He's been a phenomenal center first entire career. But he's almost thirty four years old. Now alex mack played his mid thirty s or the high level Kelsey did see a little bit different performance last year. How much of that was the coaching staff. Probably enough that you know. I would feel comfortable saying kelsey still equality starter but this again is something to keep an eye on. I do think he's probably going to return to form this year they do. Have i think a better offensive minded coach heading the team. Now we'll see if it makes the difference but kelsey is has been for almost this entire career one the best centers in the league and then it left guard. isaac somali. He has a player that again. Decent enough not necessarily going to blow your socks off miss some time as well last year in you know we'll see if he's fully healthy so in the past the eagles had a really dominant offensive line. I think they have the potential to be that this year. But they need guys to be healthy like brooks kelsey like johnson. My father needs to continue that level of performance that he showed up at the end of last year. Maybe take a step forward But i think there are enough question marks here on the offensive line. Sort of like. What the falcons. except i. i think this is much better. Unit in the falcons are putting out right now. But they've got some age here. And i do think there are some opportunities for someone greg jarrett to disrupt the middle of that line. And really when we're talking about the falcons defensive line it's pretty much great jarrett and a bunch of guys. I do think. Jonathan bullard has the potential to be a decent player this year. He looked good in the preseason. Whether or not that carries forward came out in two thousand sixteen is a third round pick and he's been sort of just average although his pass rush grade doesn't indicate he can get to the quarterback according to pf app so we'll see if he can deliver on that here in atlanta So those are the guys. I'm gonna watch on the falcons defensive line. And of course you know the falcons outside linebackers. I do think a lot of people have said this. And i think there is reasonably optimistic. I think dante valor is going to have a bounceback season. What he did. Two years ago with the rams with aaron donald on the field. Well you aaron. Donald is a once in a lifetime. Talent but grady. Jarrett's are really good guy at pressuring up the middle in the way that aaron donald did i also think fowler is going to be schemed better under veteran defensive coordinator dean pees who i think is gonna be the big sort of Changing factor for the falcons defense this year. Now as for the guys on the opposite side of fowler. Right now it looks like it's going to be too we. ot mariner Potentially stephen means these are decent enough guys. I don't think either of these guys is going to be up there for eight or nine sacks maybe a handful of saxe between the two of them really the the wildcard here is data boo ogundipe. And what this fifth round draft pick can do. He's looked really good in camp. The falcons seemed to be really high on him. He was getting first team. Snaps in the preseason I'm not sure if he's going to play a lot or not. We'll see how that plays out but it looks like he has some potential. It'll be interesting to see how many snaps he gets once the actual game start. Let's talk about what the eagles have In talent outside of the trenches now jalen hurts to be clear was second to last. Npf grades in two thousand twenty now. He inherited a terrible situation with what happened with carson. Wentz in that whole fiasco The coaching staff. Obviously that they moved on from It sounds like philadelphia's really confident in what hurts is going to do this year. He is very quarterback. I think he's got the the athletic talent to be successful. But if you've watched any tape of hurts. He is just a half second behind on his reads in the nfl. That is a lifetime of difference. he regularly would hitch his passes where he had just that brief half the second quarter of second of hesitation and those hesitations or the difference between a completed pass interception in the nfl Now do i think he can overcome that. Yes absolutely will. He overcome that instantly as the starter in this first game of the season. I think that's a big question. Mark and dean pees is going to try the scheme up as much pressure as possible. Now this is where things could get. Dangerous for the falcons. If you try to go after hurts repeatedly He also has the ability to to move and you could get out into space and really caused some damage..

"At this moment. From what i've seen again unless government Unseats him for the time. I think he's running back to break. Now when it's number eighty four in the backfield. We he showed promise he's a big guy. It's it's weird. Looks i mean again. Eighty four. I think he played wide receiver in college. He's always good so he's gonna a weird position. I think but seen a lot of us set of all these guys you know whether that's screens Out of the backfield or just straight up runs a i. I don't know a whole lot about lean dolman a know that he's shown some promise in belief in new york and what he was doing there. I was a bit surprised by that. About quadri allison was was Pretty good we're all surprised. Yom in the Gasping number forty two kayla pompey. Both those guys had dispositions lockdown pretty good but regardless they must feel pretty confident about him to have on the practice squad in to keep these three Walked in on as the top. Three guys for this offense right now because definitely used a lot because if one thing that arthur offenses it's designed out of the run. It's it's runs set. Triffid things in assing can get over people often. Forget that's how the kyle shanahan offense was designed to. Oh absolutely it was designed to get openings for devante freeman in. Seven coleman opened up play. Action did to make matt ryan that much better. And i think that's that's what we're going to get. You know barring any travesties on the the offensive line seems like an inevitable travesty. Offensive line here. Yeah le- let's knock on wood and hope that that does not come to swish in that. The coaching staff sees something. We're not seeing. I do want to talk about the side of the ball. In particular dean pees what he's going to bring to the table but before we do that. Take a quick break. We'll be right back. And we're back on the falcons. Like podcast dave walker joined by myles garrett of fox five. And we're talking about the falcons team is a whole going into this. Twenty twenty one season. It's right around the corner. This upcoming sunday at home hosting the philadelphia eagles. We talked about the offense to talk about this defense and start at the very top. Because this name. I think you mentioned earlier in the podcast. He's a guy that i think is inspiring a lot of confidence vans and i do want to remind people. This blow blows my mind that the twenty twenty defense actually finished fourteenth in devi away. They were against the run which was crazy. Wow and nineteenth against the pass which kind of makes sense. But yeah when. I looked at those like this is. This is a better group than i thought they were. In twenty twenty. And now they have a guy like dean pees coming in. Who told them he wants them to be that defense that we saw against kansas city. When the falcons nearly shopped a the chiefs at the tail end of the twenty twenty season so miles your take on this. Highly respected veteran defense coordinator has been in the league. Maybe i think longer than you've been alive. Yeah yeah he really aged me there. He's really old. Let's clear he's now it's fair it's very But yeah i know there is. There is something to be said at every stop. That being visas been had his head success again. It might be a little bit. Different with the the falcons now. Because i think this is the least talent he's ever had to work. Went into the cup. Board isn't.

"Podcast fisher. Podcast the atlanta falcons on the sp. Podcast dave walker have joined by my partner. Crime virtual talk about the falcons last. Preseason game preseason game three of the twenty twenty one season they will be at home sunday night of all times to face. The cleveland browns. Who also going to be playing some starters and yes that includes they're infamous quarterback So evan first of all how you doing man. I'm doing well. dwi how you doing. I'm good. This is got me intrigued. We weren't sure if we were. We're going to see starters but it sounds like we will. We may not see every last one of them. But every indication from arthur smith in an interview with rich eisen and what he said to the media today would seem to indicate we will see starters for some period of time. What are you looking forward to. From the starters you know if we just starting on the offensive side of the ball boy. That seems like an obvious point here from but what are you looking for to most from being able to potentially see the starters competence good Play calling. I don't obviously expect them to come out with like you know their secret. Top secret plays in stuff in blois away but just some light. Decent play calling In situational play calling that makes sense because in the past couple of years there wasn't a whole lot of that Maybe some good Blocking would be nice if we see some of the starting lot of offensive line You know and then it's like i think the big thing everybody wants these obviously cow pitch. But let's see how matt ryan in cockpits connect in a game assuming both of them play. I think how pits is more likely Matt ryan probably not as much if he does play. I can't imagine it's more than one or two series Just because at this point you know he. He's a veteran. he doesn't really need it But yeah i mean. That's kind of what i wanna see You know calvin ridley. We kind of know what. We're getting there but i think towel pits is the big one that everybody's going to tune in to see. Yeah absolutely He may only play a couple of series and that remains to be seen. I don't think. I think it's pretty clear we're not going to get the full quote unquote dress rehearsal. The people always talk about right Arthur smith even said you know everything's changed. That is no longer a thing that coaches think about. They didn't even game plan this week in the same way that they used to for preseason game three so i think that's a strong indicator that they're probably gonna pull the starters relatively early more like what you've seen in the past in a preseason game to where the as you mentioned you know guys were in for a series or two and that's what i'm expecting especially with some of the veterans matt ryan calvin ridley Jake matthews guys who. They know exactly what they're going to get out of them. There's not a lot of questions there. and then even a little bit further down With someone like chris lindstrom hayden hers. But yeah i wanna see pits But you mentioned early kind of want to see just the overall flow the offense and maybe most importantly how does this sort of new patchwork offensive line. Look how this hennessy look. We haven't seen a ton of him but he has sort of become like the unchallenged. Starter at center you know they brought in drew dolman and i don't think dominance challenged him at all for that spot which hopefully is good news about hennessy. Like they've they've sat him like a presumed starter which is right. That could be a really good sign. Offensive line holds up as well. This too oh. God yeah absolutely backs. Yeah yeah because we haven't seen patterson at all my davis we saw little all sin. But then you know beyond that. It's like the deontay form in caleb huntley battle so right running back should be interesting. Yeah to that point. What about the guys. Further down the roster on the offensive zone ball. Who is. i'm looking at this. i. I'm curious about jalen mayfield. You know we'll get some reps at left guard. Could he push josh andrews. Were that starting position You and i have talked about ryan zule and how good he is. Look to this preseason. Is he a guy. That's gonna carve out a spot at the back end of this roster guy john rain yeah john rain the titan four in my mind is he going to show enough to secure that position or the teen could look for cuts elsewhere to try to shore up that fourth in there's no certainties here and then the other big one it you know there's if there's not already a lot to look at the receiver battle once you get past ridley gaijin zacchaeus news zacchaeus. We haven't seen any of either You know between christian. Blake chris in john green antonio none taj sharp who's probably the favourite for the four five slot in them. Frank darby trevor davis frank rb lifted last week with that was one game You know there's gonna be a battle there too so yeah concerning Darby scott over at the mothership even said in his mailbag today scott bear. He felt like frank darby was on the outside looking in. It may not make them lustre so definitely name to pay attention to sunday nights. A great point on that one. And of course i think we're we're sort of dancing around it. But how did we not mention josh. Rosen josh rosen. I mean right now. The falcons backup quarterback comes down to a failed first round. Pick who is on his fifteen in four years and a undrafted free agent quarterback with a big arm and athleticism but who is radically inconsistent like. This is the backup quarterback position right now. So yeah what about josh rosen. Do you think it sounds like he's going to get some playing time in this one to properly evaluate them. Has your opinion changed on. You know what it looks like for him as far as making this team no just because a lot of the reports have just been practice reports We need to see what he's gonna do in a game in. Obviously he hasn't had a ton of time to learn the playbook but I mean it's it's up for grabs. I don't think he's ever been in a better situation than he is right now to be a quarterback to all the other teams. It's like like san francisco for example was less news on. They like go in. It's like oh. Wow they call chain a hand. Didn't see a whole lot there. I guess he got rid of him. No it's jimmy. Garoppolo in trevor lancer are trevor lance trae lancer there neither one of them were getting so there was no reason to keep rose in around But in this situation all of a sudden you've got john. Matt ryan established his quarterback one within beyond that. It's like josh rosen. Comes in his competition is sleep. A franks Undrafted quarterback hasn't taken a regular season. Snap I can't imagine a better situation for josh rosen. To come in if you know if he's going to make the roster if he doesn't..

Today's podcasts we've got back for the first time. The actually my apologies. Michael for that Michael rothstein veteran reporter for espn. Who has been in training camp both in atlanta and miami. I wanna ask you about that Because From what i understand. They actually practiced on the surface of the sun at one point during camp inside the sun. It's i got out fairly very exciting. And by the way. I mean you just call me old right there so i'm gonna steal gina's perpetually mad vine and i'm going to be mad online. You've you've angered both of us in the span of we were recording about ninety seconds. This this is my lot in life. All right so We have michael matt online rothstein with us and we're gonna talk about his impressions. I wanna i wanna talk about atlanta. I mike. It's you've come down. You started you've been in detroit for years. What's been like for you covering this team. I mean not just the weather but the transition that cities like how has it been. How's that transition been. I mean i mean the surface of the sun like let's just say no. It's been good. It's like anything else. It's a transition. It's getting used to everything. Getting used to different commute getting use to different traffic patterns getting used to seeing accidents like us all yesterday literally across eighty five into that was possible but i guess logistically it could be Just getting new team. I don't know a lot of these players. I don't know a lot of these coaches. it's you know the relationship of things starting all over again. I haven't really had to do that. Despite all the coaching in general manager rosser turnover changes in detroit. There was still some people. I could rely on account on hold on Which that hasn't been the case so it's all new and obviously in a kobe pandemic time where we don't have locker access and you don't get really the time to develop relationships like i had done in the past in detroit that changes things and it makes it a little bit more overboard of a little bit different but i think overall it's gone pretty well You know it's the end of the damn still watching so bombs talking about players about football and about their lives in that part of the job. Does it changes just the scenery. That's different and the fact that i have gone through waging much fifty one hundred. Spf sunscreen over last month. And you know i. I don't really have a costco cord. Needs maybe get one of those. Because i think that's just what i need to do is buy sunscreen and buy a book. I mean i between italy and detroit detroit between new york atlanta. I slipped up i. There's so many times reports..

"Dave walker. Today's podcast doing something a little bit. Talk to an author who has written a new book that is going to be released. Soon about loser ville. Yes we're talking about. Atlanta atlanta sports. This one looks really interesting. let me get to our special guests on the podcast. He is a historian and author and freelance writer is an editor at the espionage. In sight down the drive which covers the cincinnati bearcats and most importantly he is the author of loser. Ville how professional sports remade atlanta and how atlanta remade professional sports. Talking about clayton shooter clayton. Thanks for joining me david. Thanks so much for having me. I appreciate it yeah. I'm looking forward to this. When you messaged me on twitter. I thought okay here. We go And then i saw your book was about. And i thought oh boy this is something that falcons fans can probably relate to and not just to be clear. This is not just specific to the falcons to all of the atlanta franchises. And even some that have since left the city. So why don't you give us a background on the book and let's start with the title. Where did the title come from. Because obviously there's probably some atlanta fans are gonna feel a little bit triggered by loser ville. Oh certainly it's not intended that way. The purpose of the title is to evoke a particular time and place in history of atlanta in nineteen seventy five lewis grizzard who later became a well-known southern numerous. You is the editor of the time. And he did a to art front eight series called loser volt us. Essentially a synopsis of the previous ten years of atlanta wrote sports beginning in the mid sixty of the braves. The falcons hawks of the nba and eventually be flames room. National hockey league game doubt down any city leaders in atlanta whether they were part of the political establishment or corporate establishment a tremendous amount of effort into making lanta a major league city and things hadn't quite turned out as they expected a figure the terms team to be sorts of prestige. It'd be it sorts of civic unity. It would be something that the would bring the city together and it didn't quite happen that way either on the field or at the box office all of these teams many of whom had managed was basically nude a pro sports troubled on the field and the teams overtime all eventually into struggled box off. It's to enlarge part b. of the teams on the field struggles but also due to due to some factor. It's specific atlanta market and factors. We ended up shaping a lot of other cities in south and west which became major professional sports cities too so in essence. My book is a story of atlantis. Pursuit of pro sports and the response by atlanta sports fans do these teams in the united sixties. Nineteen seventies and onward. Yeah i think it's important to note those franchises for fans of these teams especially. Listen to this podcast. Follow the falcons. Those franchises have had more success in recent years. The braves had string success in the nineties. With a ra- constantly contention. The hawks have had mixed levels of success throughout the years. The falcons certainly have been far more successful. I think in the arthur blank era than than previous to that but absolutely ownership is such a big part of any story like this go. Yeah and but in that timeframe. You're mentioning that i i guess. Ten years is called the first decade of those teams atlanta. They were all pretty miserable. Franchises with atlanta falcons sort of Being one of the the worst in the nfl extended period of time How bad was it and do you feel like the the history of those teams. You've just mentioned that. I want you to dive into that a little bit more. The ownership of those teams. 'cause i think falcons fans in particular that go back to pre arthur blank days know how important the the ownership is king. Speak a bit too. That i'll start with the falcons. The falcons owner rankin smith. He owned the team through the late. I guess early two thousands. Broadly life considered a very layer friendly owner. But he was just not a football guy. Who's an insurance a well insurance salesman in a city. He happens to have been a fraternity brother. Carl sanders was the mayor of georgia in the mid nineteen sixties and as the nfl as as atlanta was pursuing an nfl team. He tacked the shoulder risk fraternity brother and said. Hey step up. This is this is your chance to help the city out and Franken smith rose to the occasion. Spent nope boasted. Nine million dollars in nineteen sixty five to secure a franchise with more than anybody had an nfl team with the time ads on atlanta builds stadium atlanta fulton county stadium. Put them in a position to get an nfl team. And in many ways the falcons struggles were shaped by having inexperienced ownership group football. Any of these words is a very specialized business and you can be the best insurance salesman in the world but not really equipped to succeed at running an nfl franchise and unfortunately for much of the teams early history. They relied on close associates at the smith. Family people who are graded insurance but maybe weren't experts at football to played prominent roles in running the organization in nineteen sixty seven..

"We're back on the alcoholic. Podcast dave walker. I'm joined by jake gordon at sports. At l. and we're talking about the falcons cornerback position. That's corners than the defensive side. Very taught about quarterbacks had to clarify that with jake before we got into the podcast. And like i think. I would actually prefer to talk about The qb's here talking about how awfully pay franks six foot seven. That's just it's just weird all right so in the first half. We talk about agents rail favorite row. Chris will. Kendall sheffield all right. Let's get into this guy. Because i feel like there is a perception issue with him. That is part of it is fair but at the same time i think there is also as with many positions in the nfl. This has been my experience their positions. Where if you do your job. Well you don't get noticed and if you dear job poorly it's you're like an air traffic controllers. Something goes terribly wrong. And it's the same thing with jake matthews. It's he can you know. Hold down the left side for ninety five percent of the game and he gives up that one sack in you hear the fans all saying he's the worst left tackle in the nfl might know he's demonstrably not and i'm not saying by any stretch that isaiah oliver is a good corner that said i don't think that he is the moving pile of human trash that some of our fans make out. What do you think about isiah oliver. What kind of role do you think he can have on this defense or am i be feel free. If i'm off base and you think he is human trashed. Please feel free to put that out there as well. now i'm going to be boring. I i gotta agree with you there. And i think isaiah. Oliver is a bit of a victim of hype when he was drafted..

Joined by dave the chief at alcoholism. We're talking about the linebackers. Going into the twenty twenty one season. We've talked about the two starters atop dave. I want to get your thoughts on michael walker. Because let's be honest. Twenty twenty season was rough for rookies. And you know we look across the board age rayle who. I feel like had a great season for a rookie corner. Hennessy was quite bad in is probably going to be our starting center in of that just came down to the fact that these guys did not have a proper rookie training camp. They didn't have a normal offseason regiment They didn't even have preseason games with which to sort of get their legs up to speed. They were just sort of thrown into the fire with camp virtual camps with zoom meetings arguably the worst ways to come into the league and yet michael walker according to pf is one of our better defenders. He didn't get a a ton of snaps he didn't he wasn't playing every single down. But as you mentioned when he did play he was playing fairly well and again for rookie. Who's taken later rounds. This feels like yet another player. Where maybe there's something narrow in the same way when we started seeing flashes from foyer three years ago Do you feel like we're seeing something similar with walker. Are you optimistic about his long term potential especially now. You've got a veteran defensive coordinator like greenpeace coming in and mentoring him absolutely. you know. I look at walker. And i i see a really good young linebacker like full stop no qualifications. Obviously he played like a third of the defensive snaps. Almost half of the special teams snaps a year ago. So we got enough of a look at him to thank. You know our.

"Back on alchoholic. Podcast dave walker. I'm joined by the one and only will mcfadden. We're talking about the falcons tight end group heading into two thousand twenty. One talked about the two guys at the top cow. Pinson hayden now excited. I think both bizarre. If you couldn't hear that voice in the first half of this is to me one of the most fun position groups sorta keep our eye on for the season but the guys who are at number three number four and maybe number five on this roster they matter as well we'll and i think the the first thing that jumps to mind he is not going to be receiving tight. End but the falcons clearly thought they traded for. They clearly thought this guy was so on a wanted to having locker room. He is a phenomenal inline. Blocker in maybe in the way that hayden hearst and cal will not be this year He is undeniably a fantastic locker room. Presence in which was gonna piss. Kiss off some of our But i think his values being understated. Because one thing falcons fans wanna see one thing. Arthur smith wants to see is a successful running game again this year. And i think he's gonna be a big factor. Now i'm talking about lee smith We we pulled away from the buffalo bills. This guy has. He's thirty three. Okay and i just want to reiterate this. He is thirty three as a blocking tight. End in the nfl. Some of you may be just sort of laughing at that. I think that is a testament to how good he is at what he does the fact that he has lasted. Essentially you know a decade plus in this league being doing something. That is sort of an under appreciated aspect of disposition. And he's still going and the team brought him in. And i want to give them the benefit of the doubt here that they knew that he was going to be the kinda guy that contributes on the field it contributes in mentoring. A guy like cockpits and this guy that's going to be a strong presence in the locker room. D feel the same way or my overstating Maybe a little bit too much. What lee smith could mean for falcons issue no. I don't think you're ever stating anything with that. Because like you said it was notable to me that they traded for him. I mean this was somebody who i can't imagine out there's always stuff behind the scenes. Wear you know everybody kind of expects one thing or believes one find out that actually know two or three teams were in on this person. And so what ends up looking like maybe a head-scratching move turns out to make sense in the context of all the matters really are with these thirty two teams think and two teams thought. This dude was worth adding than and you wanted him then. Yeah that's all the matters at the end of the so. I looked at this because he clearly does that. Niche levin toilolo the loose stock blocking damned role. And that is something where it look if you're going to draft kyle pits at number four and you've got already kind of a receiving tight end a little bit more of a hybrid than a pure receiver like an angry type but a pretty much a receiving tight end and hayden. Hearse you need somebody to put out there when you need the tough yards. And that's where. I think the move to get lee. Smith makes a lotta sense because he's cheap. I mean he's he's old he's experienced. He knows what to do. He's seen a lot of situations that are going to be thrown at him. So you don't really have to while you're working on grooming kyle pits and you're working on seeing what you can get out of hayden hers before you have other not to let him hit free agency next offseason or whether or not he can be part of your team. That's a lot of coaching energy to invest in two players ukraine. Needs somebody over here. Who just knows what the hell they're doing and don't have to pay attention to him a lot. And that's lee smith and oh by the way he can help develop somebody like kyle pits and the finer points of blocking he can help hayden hearst in the same way like there are so many guys on football teams in in locker rooms. Who just kind of know their role they come in. The coaches are frank. With and say look. You're not here to get seven hundred yards this season here. You're here to help us on four th and one. You're here to help us at the two yard line. And you're here to help develop this guy that we just invested a lot in and teach them how to be a pro and the other part of this is i. Don't know this for sure but this move strikes me as the type of move where some coach. On this falcons. Staff has either worked directly with lee smith before or is very close with a coach who worked directly with lee smith and who was recommended. Very highly to the falcons coach. So i don't know that for a fact that's pure speculation but that's what this move made me think of because in your one of your coaching regime. You're looking for culture guys. You're looking for guys that you know. Operate the same way you want your team to operate. They approach it philosophically from the same way that they're going to set the tone and that's just when i saw the lee smith move. That was my very first thought was okay this dudes coming in here to bash some heads and to set the tone in the locker room. That's what he's here to do and your last point is such a point one. Because i'm not going to dance around it. We we heard from many reporters wants. Dan was gone. in including jeff schultz From the athletic. Who has been covering the falcons for quite a while that there was a distinct lack of accountability in the locker room under dan. Quinn and i think that arthur blank and The rest of the falcons ownership felt like that was something. That had to be corrected. And it's one thing for the coach to establish the locker room and what. He expects all of his players but that coach needs someone. He needs several guys. Several leaders several veterans to carry that message into the locker room to every single player to make sure it resonates to make sure that they're hearing it it's one thing for the coach to do it in to reinforce what his expectations are. But you need those guys. Those guys like lee. Smith matt ryan these veterans who made a long career in the nfl to reinforce that message to every single gone roster. And i think to your point. Very strong one. I i agree wholeheartedly. I think lee smith guy. He's going gonna be one of those guys who's gonna come in and he's going to bash heads like said he's gonna be in there on fourth and one he's going to be in there on third and short and he's gonna get at most seven yards receiving but this is a guy that's going to help arthur smith coaching staff from the inside revamp. What the locker room is. Because that apparently was in the issue over the past several years with this team. And if arthur smith is going to rebuild this roster in the way that he wants to he needs guys like this. You're going to carry that message for him against a very important point So we may not see him on the stat line much but i think his impact will be seen in other ways in. That's something. I'm very interested seeing how that plays out and i just real quick i. I don't want to necessarily like there are absolutely some some good leaders and players. Stillman's locker room is your that accountability. Thing certainly was a factor. But i do think that the locker room probably didn't need a full overhaul but yes an infusion of new people just like there was in twenty fifteen in two thousand sixteen right. I'm a firm believer in turnover within the locker room to keep motivated. Keep guys hungry. Get new perspectives. Dig all while in good but there are some good young leaders. I think On this falcons roster already. Yeah absolutely and they just. They need as many of those voices as they can get especially for new coach coach..

"Dave walker. I'm joined by fellow writer on necas. We're talking about the falcons roster going into twenty twenty one specifically offensive line. The first half. We talked about jake matthews. Chris lindstrom or concerns with kayla gary. Now let's talk about That left guard spot because center. There's not a guaranteed starter there Let's talk about some of the names. That right now are at the top of that list. I think If you were to ask most people who do you think would be the day one starter at left guard if it was built just around who's on the roster today i think most people say it's probably gonna be josh andrus. Who is the one of the few veterans in this group. And we'll talk about the the youth on this roster in just a minute is in. My mind is probably gonna be josh andrews. The other name. I think that people are sort of clinging to as someone that the again for reasons you mentioned in the first half a non is someone that was drafted by this. Regime is jalen mayfield The rookie out of michigan Who is sort of a consensus head. Scratcher of the draft but a lot of people feel like There were other guys that could've taken when they took mayfield. Maybe his draft position didn't make sensors talent but left guard a andrews mayfield. Anyone else what do you think about position. And how concerned you that this is a question. Mark thing into the season this other than edge. Right now is the biggest question mark on the balkans roster completely. Because you know i understand. Love guard has been a position of weakness for the past few years. Because thomas dimitrov could not evaluate offense to save his life and he had a you know gave james carpenter up some big money to play a below average football for the past few years. But you know two carpenters credit. He was better last year than he was on the year before that like he wasn't carpenter wasn't an abject disaster out guard last year his pass. Blocking was you know solid sixty two according to a pro football focus and you know he someone who still someone whom. I'm sure the fan base isn't losing any sleep over him leaving and you know i'm they're welcoming him now. Being on their offspring mortga josh andrews last her endless light joe. Josh andrews his pass blocking he may james carpenter. Look like david brock. Dra concern. I mean like his pass blocking great according to pf was in eighteen point one word. I almost didn't even know that it could get that. Low it among among offensive lineman who played at least twenty percent of their team's snaps lost. Your josh andrews had the third lowest ask blocking grade in the nfl and this is among like over two hundred players along the offense line. So you know. He's someone who is always a below average passed last year was was really the first year where he really you know kind of playing time. He had fewer than one hundred snaps Of time before last season and last year he was just dreadful. Also you know hopefully like you said. Arthur smith can work some agic with him. And but you know. I'm going to be incredibly incredibly nervous. If he's lining up at left. Guard for the falcons. But you know right now is the proverbial favorite is because jalen may feel is pretty raw like jalen mayfield's feels like a pick you make per year to right but he may have to. You know be thrown into the fire and your one right away because you know daily mayfield. Someone who played at the tackle position in In most assignment college. But he's gonna take into a guard. Position is because he's he's better suited for that by his skill set his ram score. Was you know pretty poor. A four point something. I forgot what ugly it was as a tackle but when he kicks into guarded it's above seven point. Oh which is which is very solid Mayfield as someone whom. I'm going to be rooting for him in this In the offensive line training camp battle. Because if we're if we're going to be week at position. I'd rather we'd be weak with a a young rookie right. Learning and hopefully improving as time goes along because josh andrews is thirty years old. I don't really expect him to be good. But you know This is why this is why. Caleb mcgarry is so important because you can have you can have a weak link along the offensive line. You're not gonna find really very many or even maybe even any offensive lines in the nfl where they have five very good starters. You know you can afford to have that. Weakness can't afford to have three positions of weakness along the offensive line. Because that's just that's just a disaster waiting up. Yeah and this is i. i'm with you. Edge is a concern but this one in my mind is probably if not the biggest. It's right there it's second With with the edge position And you mentioned josh andrews. Six years of experience. He's thirty years old It would be surprising if he suddenly became a decent starter You know that would be some dark magic dark. Lord magic from arthur smith to turn that around to that degree This past week on colic live a myself in aaron freeman of the fans of the lock. Dhanjal can spot cast a guest on this podcast. Many times we were talking about this and aaron. Basically his one of his takes was the starting left guard is not currently on the roster and He making the case that he doesn't he thinks don't ultimately either trade for somebody or look for veterans that gets cut. You know to be a flyer at left guard. And i think he's probably on something I i'd be a lot more comfortable without either of these options because remember the last time the falcons did that was with andy. Le'veon's it'll be tree right and ended up being a very solid starter. You know for what. It's worth. I give i give democrat a lot of credit for making that. That was very savvy. I think that was after the four three season game where they just they just saw. What a disaster. The line was and that third preseason game against miami and they're like all right we we can't we can't have we'll see. I'll be very eager to see. Just how josh andrews and jalen mayfield perform and you know the young guy that center course In the preseason you know then we can possibly reassess our comfort level A few weeks from now. Yeah and that's it. I i feel like we have to add that caveat for the entire offense of lying because To the point. I was making earlier. The death for the falcons on offense right now going dresden. This is there's no doubt. Yeah it looking at the roster The for the offensive. Lineman purely offensive lineman Players with at least three or more years of actual experience in the league. There are three players for the offensive. Line Jake matthews matt gono and josh andrews who we just talked about otherwise injured. Yeah and ain't to exactly ghana's injured so to healthy players.

"Is dave walker. Joined by gina. Kelly and kevin. I talked about the quarterback position. What it looks like going into twenty twenty one before we get to the backup players which know everyone is just eager to talk about. I do wanna sort of wrap up with this Matt ryan's thirty six. We know at this point who he is player. He is not going to suddenly start running a four four forty he is not going to be scrambling quarterback will not with that attitude. Turn on his high school tape on his high school tapers. Tell me he's not running quarterback. Please do not limit dave's ability to make twitter jokes about matt ryan. It's one of the greatest things. I'm al gore's it really is but poor. Sarah ryan probably holds her breath every single time out. There scrambling yeah. She's just thinking. Come home to our twins please. Especially when you see like you know saints linemen come barreling down at him But that happens even when he's in the pocket so that's neither here nor there. He's not scrambling quarterback where we're going to put that into the atmosphere But we do know. You know his his strengths His his cerebral quarterback is one of the smartest quarterbacks in league. He's got a quick release He is one of the best pocket quarterback. You'll see he knows how the climb the pocket he has. Great pocket movement great Sense of where he is in the pocket and he throws with incredible anticipation. He'll throw receivers open His very much attritional quarterback. He is not in the new mold if you will. They athletic quarterbacks to patrick mahomes of the world so i think we have to view everything within the lens of who matt ryan. He is not he is. He is a bit of a throwback. He is more like a tom. Brady is more like a peyton manning than the is patrick mahomes And it is not a criticism. It's just a realization. Imagine those that that. We're not saying anything that matt ryan doesn't know doesn't want to go out there and scrambled ten times fourteen times a game. That's not his His best utilization. So as we talk about ryan and we talk about the quarterback position. I know for a lot of fans they look at it in light of. Oh well he is. Not these guys will yeah. He's not he's not a patrick mahomes. He is not. You know. An aaron rodgers with who can flick his wrist and throw the ball. Ninety yards downfield So within that context. I think it's important to say we know worth we're matt ryan fans. The three of us here have watched him for almost fifteen years. Now and we're fans but we know who he is we know his limitations. And we're still optimistic within the context of those limitations so Gino go here first with you. Any last thoughts on your outlook for matt ryan in twenty twenty one. Yeah just one last thing. I'm expecting his doubts. Probably be hopefully more passing touchdowns than last year but as far as the yardage pretty close to the same You just gotta factor and losing polio jones to the titans the a trade An also add an additional games. The schedule i think that those two things will balance out. Probably be right around six hundred yards so shearim hopefully about thirty touchdown so that's been pretty consistent with his performance over the course of this freer. I'm i'm really excited about this. Offense looks like under this new regime. Absolutely kevin any final thoughts on matt ryan before we go to the very very exciting backups behind him one of them somewhat exciting the other one you know maybe less but yeah i mean i the big thing that i think we're gonna see is while it's not gonna be tennessee. We're gonna see ryan's passing attempts drop probably significantly because they're always been one of the past heaviest quarterback or coordinators in the nfl. The falcons were behind in every game. it was just just a bad situation there so i think we'll probably see ryan more around five hundred to five fifty passing attempts. Maybe more towards five fifty with the extra game factored in but you know for reference Ryan tannehill last year in. Sixteen games only had four hundred and eighty-one passing attempts which is almost what one hundred hundred forty less than ryan had the. And you know ten yards because of it but Tenure also had thirty three touchdowns because arthur smith is a red zone genius and i mean that's the big thing is is. It's going to be a more efficient passing attack. Which is what really matters not volume so we could see ryan drop one hundred twenty fewer passes But get more touchdowns and more yards per attempt and still almost replicate his stats from the previous year in terms of yardage. Because of it so i think the big thing is you know. Can't arthur smith replicate his red zone genius because if they can get to seventy plus percent red zone efficiency like he did in tennessee. Each of the last two years. I mean that is huge. I'm does all if all you changed. Last year was atlanta's red zone efficiency from fifty three percent which was almost the worst in the league. thanks to cutter to tennessee's first ranked reds and efficiency which was seventy five percent. The falcons would have been a top aide offense in scoring just with that one actually play team but often almost certain way because you add thirty or forty points to their total with that maybe even a little bit more. So i mean they lost a lot of games by a point by a couple points you know they lost eight. I think one score game so It doesn't take much to turn that around. So this is why. We're gonna see the falcons picked as a trendy team to kind of turn it around and You know this is the big test for further smith. All the data are going to say it was all derrick henry. Derrick henry didn't score touchdowns taniela thirty three of them. And he wasn't throwing them all to derrick henry so much more than just henry. It's going to be different in atlanta. You know you don't have henry there to lean on but I think it will be good Maybe not great just first year. It might take a year or two to to get fully settled but yeah excited to see how ryan fares in this new offense. Yes and to be fair In the first year in her hand in two thousand fifteen That was still even though they had some rough spots very rough spots. That was a much more entertaining offense. In general you could tell there was a lot going on and Towards the end of two fifteen you could see the the lights beginning to to turn on for everybody. I suspect we'll see that sooner. Because as you mentioned this is a west coast offense at its core. A do think matt ryan is going to adapt a little bit quicker to arthur smith than he did to call shanahan but this is. This is the big question mark. So let's go and talk now about some of these backup. Quarterbacks there are two currently on the roster and i think the falcons sort of stunned everybody by not drafting a quarterback even in the six or seven th round. May people thought. Okay if you're if you're committing to quarterback you gotta take at least you know sometime in day three and they didn't they waited and they ended up grabbing philippi. Franks a free agent. Rookie of arkansas. Twenty three years old. This is a big kid is six foot six To thirty four You know. I think the scouting report on him in. I'm gonna lean on you kevin for this here in a second big arm but a terrible footwork and Questionable accuracy at times and then they also signed veteran. aj mccaren of alabama. He is thirty years old. He's been in the league for about seven years because last was with cincinnati and aj mccarron is like if you're going to say computer designed me a white quarterback with no outstanding traits whatsoever. You would get aj macaire. That would be what would spit out of the computer algorithm. I think he's he doesn't have a big arm is not you know he's six three so he's he's decently size. He's not athletic. He's not really great in the pocket. He's just sort of he's vanilla ice cream of of the ice cream flavors so not the thing you order sort of the thing you lean on if you absolutely have to nothing to hate about him but anything to.
