You know the ground in mid season form and we've got some guys that you could tell. Been working out and almost like everybody and our our hitters air looking good. You know, the pitches of don't strikes and Man. These guys look like they're almost ready to go. I mean, realised that they still gotta beware of shoulders, hamstrings, quads and things like this off tissue. Muscles, especially but I know the guys are excited already ready to go, You know, does he? We're talking about Graham and coal. And sure. As though you know the horses around baseball and Verlander, Of course you wanted him And he he was banged up a little bit before just before the break. I think came in March. How is he right now? Does it He's great, I say, I think it's probably help him no more than anybody, you know? Yeah. He had a growing problem that he had a surgical repair feeling something a lad gave him time to heal. And you know, he said he feels like he did a couple years ago. So I was trying to figure out how the quality any replaces 50 especially with Cole, you know, sitting for us for New York and Verlander Hood. Do you not feel like better now that I know in the for land was back to himself, that they had to ask you this about you with the covert 19 with that changed our whole world. Coming into spring trader You got signed. Crane brings you in had that news conference. I wish you did that. For my own standpoint, I wish you didn't have to be part of that May of Kulpa. News conference that they had. I thought that was unfortunate. That's putting it mildly weren't family radio, So the next point your team was going to catch all kinds of hell. From folks around Major League baseball, but it's probably good it's got to be significantly lessened. You can't have anybody you know at practice, and we're limited to maybe just 60 games. Is that that that you can't you break there? Well, you d'oh, you know on one hand, but you'd rather play the whole season on hand, but they avoid. I mean, you know, America was angry, You know that. But in the fort, everyone in Fort Myers with the Boston Red Sox choir. You know they were you know, they were angry. You know, we went into Ah, Port ST Lucie would have met our You know they were angry. I mean, you know, everybody was angry and So you know, we did catch a break, You know, so they speak. I mean, you don't want to catch a break at the expensive You know, like, I know the whole world on a pandemic And you know a lot of people dying under. You know, you have to. You have to deal. You know, you know that the players the cards that you're dealt with. I mean, I mean, it's I mean, there's been a lot of things happened this year and six months. I mean, this is probably on President and my only you know the Scambos. God makes no Ah, police brutality and protest And, you know, I mean, crunches LeMond rules right now on no, but on you and I'm really proud of One of our young people the way they stuck together, because you know we were back in the sixties. You know, during the civil rights in the protest, and you know the dogs and hoses, stuff all over the country and Anti prom, anti conformity, anti everything. I was right there in Berkeley. So lived at speed ship. No. Yeah. So I like to say I'm proud of are, you know young because I got a son. You know who's in that same category One going is over, right? Proud. And he raised money. Ah, on instagram for those that were, you know the people that especially, you know, minorities in our home town that were You know that rebooted and vandalized So you know again. Like I said, I'm extremely proud of you. You know you were mentioned in Berkeley dust, the weave weave. No new on off a long time I was watching. Ah, I think a special CNN had the other night about 1968. What struck me is how similar things that were going on, then are happening now. It's it's um Maybe you're watching this. You're saying my God it's 50 years later. You know, what have we done here? You know, Take it out, making your teachings of the most damning Not around long enough to see it right? And you know, we've been around for a long time. You know, you know things haven't really changed that much in on, And there's time to think about changing now realized how how do you know how much things that remain the same and so Boy. I mean, you know, it's not a time bomb. We can put it out. Yes and Dusty Baker Guest does the 15th all time in major league history with 1863 wins all time. That is, uh, that's a great number..

"In East Amid Coleman in New York. Dave Simms out in Seattle, Larry Doby Jr was AA lot of fun to talk to you last hour. Good guy, the sun off the great Larry Doby, the Hall of Famer and and, of course, John Miko, the John Mayko joining us Last hour as well. 877337 66 66 is the phone number. Dave. I could talk to this our next guest forever. Okay about anything on DH. That's why it's always a pleasure to bring her in the lovely Kim Jones is going to join us right now and say hello to all her friends on the fan. She is a fixture on the fan most times, and she's going to join us were lucky enough to have her as a guess right now. Hi, Kim. Hello, Eddie and Dave. Wow. What a treat on this July 4th weekend. How are you guys doing? Well, kim, and let me just say two things. We are there. That's all you need to say. Days. We are good state. Penn State alum. I enjoy your work. I see when when I'm not baseball Motive tune into you guys on NFL Network. Thank you. You gotta you do great work. Import. You got it. You guys have a lot of fun. You got a lot of good people there on some of my knowledge. Baldy Maverick. Molly went to Duke with that Larry Doby Junior was there. Kim. You know, Eddie and I were talking about baseball and baseballs. You know that guys are checking out right now, in terms of Hey, I'm gonna pass on this season. What's your thoughts on the viability of getting this season started in the NFL and complaining. Well, you know, I'm I'm generally always helpful. I think that's the only way through this life of ours, you know, and not false hope and not crazy hope, but but I am hopeful. I'm optimistic. I think the NFL benefited. Unlike the other sports in terms of the calendar, there's no denying that the NFL also showed some guts in continuing with free agency and the draft when there were some You know, to me odd calls that those things which can happen all you know, remotely and the attacks and phone calls and computers and that kind of stuff. There were all kinds of calls to not have those things the NFL went forward. I think it was their most successful draft ever the way the real nature of it all. So now you know the NFL's going to hope that some of that good fortune continues with this virus and with e. The idea that they can get on the field at the end of this month and then find a way through preseason then and then, obviously, hopefully the regular season. I, You know, I wish I had a crystal ball guys, I don't but but I am hopeful and optimistic. You know, it doesn't give you pause at all Kim list and I think you know, we know football is probably the most contact sport. We're going to the MBA. Obvious little of closer contact in baseball. Baseball is having its problems. The MBA too. Does it give you pause when you see that on kind of a daily basis, some of the things that air Piling up in the other sports. It does. You know, I have to believe that they are working on Something for the face area. I don't know that I'm not reporting that. But I have to believe that they're looking at options to at least take the you know, Offensive lineman, defensive lineman. Well, you know, a foot apart, breathing all over each other, and and other things to take that out of it. I don't know that. I have to believe you know, brighter minds than I or at work on this show, And you know, I would think that they are You know, looking for a way to minimize some of that up close and personal contact that you know the breathing on each other that, you know so alive. All that stuff. I mean, we never really think about it. But now we have Teo and I have to believe they're thinking of that. Stop. Look. Yeah. I came to my mind the other day when I was when I was talking to, you know, distant from to some baseball players, and they're going through saliva tests, basically for Cove it and I'm thinking Well, you know, there was saliva galore here in football football. On almost every play and you get so that obviously brings a little bit of concern. But yeah, that's interesting that there would be working. I don't know that Eddie if it's even occurring in my conversations with people like this conversations, you know, they've already figured out that they have to address it. Somehow I have to believe And they have a lot of good people at all of the people who's doing his right down. Still doing the helmets. I mean, they're they're different helmets that have been improved over the years changed, but yeah, but I gotta believe they have somebody brown engineers and think of the business. That would be you know, if they could come up with something? Something that smart business I guarantee you is certainly in the work, right? You are guaranteed. They tell me this would you? Thoughts on Limiting or it'll eliminating the preseason games. Yeah, interesting. Listen, players don't love preseason games. We can all go back over the history of this league and talk about Preseason injuries that have affected teams, then the whole way through. They affect careers, you know, and it's one thing If you get injured in week four of the regular season, it's another if you're getting injured. You know, in week three of the preseason, for heaven's sake, So I understand that players don't love them. Players don't want to play in them all the time. Some players don't play in them, which is smart, in many cases, in my opinion. Um, I don't know if there's an opportunity to find sort of a a balance here or is the NFL will be the player's union on this and say. Yeah, it's more important that guys get their bodies in tune. They can do some hitting and practice which we actually don't see much of anymore guy. Maybe not not back in the day hitting in practice because, you know, I used to cover two a days in Albany longer, But you know, maybe if there's no preseason work, and we already know that you can't Scrimmage against other teams during the week. You can't have practice against other teams. They've eliminated that for this year as well. Maybe the teams do a little more of that help get their brother and their teammates into shape for the regular season. Maybe that's what we see. How is the fact that they've limited those kind kinds of engagements with other teams, practices, scrimmages and everything? How do you think that will affect play? Say they do get to start the season at the assigned date? Yeah, I mean, listen, it could be raggedy early on, but I think we I think we often think that I've I've also covered teams that have obviously had coaching changes, which means scheme changes and everything else. And sometimes early on, Those teams are finding their way versus the more stable team that you might have a few rough patches. But what is more in tune early, so I think that's the natural Sort of just a natural theme of football, especially when you change up. The Giants have obviously changed coaches again, so they were always going to have a bigger learning curve. This year. You could argue it's even bigger now, and I would not argue against that. It is a big one. It's a big learning curve for a first time head coach. And for players that are pretty young, the giant have a pretty young roster. So that was always going to be the case and obviously the virus and the after effects. The current effects of all of this have have magnified that there's no doubt about that. Could could we see some raggedy football early? Yes. I think we'll most of us be grateful just to see football early. I think that answer is also yes. Kim Jones of the NFL network and a big big part of W F A N and has been over the years as well..

"It's It's interesting to me to tell you the kind of person he is that you know he was a hell of a football player and maybe a better football player than he was baseball player For all we know, I don't know that, but That's what he wants to talk about. Like he doesn't want to talk about what he's known for. He's a Hall of Fame baseball player. Wanna brag on himself? He wants to talk about another sport that it was this very good. It'll be a couple three times on occasions. I said, You know, I'm a little bit more familiar with Mr Robinson story, but I'm catching up with with what you went through, and I would ask him about specific guys. They would just sort of go silent. I said, Okay, that speaks by local check his move on to the next guy. Yeah. Okay. How about this guy? Silence. Sometimes. Sometimes silence speaks volumes. That's one of the great pictures. They always talk about the picture. For the moment that did or didn't happen. It's Cincinnati When Pee Wee Reese put his arms armor and Jackie Robinson closed. There was a similar thing picture. Believe it if it still exists of Lou Boudreau. I want a similar type of thing or there was some kind of interaction had never been heard of. Ah, I think what I think it hit a home run, and people like parts of country flip that when they were shaking hands at home plate. Well, that's you know, that's cool. That's Ah. But who did Larry Jr DeLarge into play with white socks? That way he played it, Dude, I believe before your started, Duke And played in the Lake, Wisconsin. And below. Okay, I wonder who that is, but it was like it was. That's what I think his dad ended up with the White Sox on that was Indian. You played most of scoring, that would clearly and I'm not joking here up Number 1959 He played 20 game 21 games with a white sidewalk and then then he managed for what a couple cups of coffee against the world. So, Yeah, that was funny. That's a good piece of history right there. Larry Doby Junior's contribution to our society into baseball. A pretty significant, absolutely All right. We're coming up to. Ah, four o'clock on the fan Kim Jones going to join us next hour. Jim Duquette will join us as well. In the five o'clock hour. We'll take you right up until six o'clock at Coleman and Dave Simms with you on the fan. This anniversary weekend..

"In the east and a little afternoon out in Seattle, where Dave Simms is and we'll see if we can keep your head straight there for a little bit, all right. I'm fine. It's that says, Oh, this modern technology. Ah, well, see how we'll see how it goes on. If that we'll figure out something else and hook it up that way. But it sounds fine Nuts will be there until six o'clock tonight. Kim Jones, Jim Duquette, Larry Doby Junior in just a little while, but you know what Dave at this time of the year? This guy comes in, as you know, like, sort of the house experts and there are two things the Indianapolis 500 the anniversary of W F AM because nobody knows more about the anniversary of W F an or the Indianapolis 500 then Our own. John Miko, the recently retired Jon maker, who you just heard Do an update at three o'clock, mink. I had a day of any boy. Who are you? Are you doing? I'll tell you, I'm doing just five. There was a time and date. First of all congratulations for all the awards well done out in Washington, and the course is being with the Mariners. But David I usedto have a lot of discussions about doing play by play. Back in the days and in the story of David and and it's not so much a lot of it was philosophy as the one story that I remember. Let's see if Dave remember says Dave was doing temple football at the time, and the temple football was in a struggling mode and they were getting ready to think that the day after we chatted, you were going to apply to Manhattan. Kansas game. Kansas State. Yeah, Way had a lengthy discussion about how to to change what, whether you change or conduct yourself or whatever. If the game became lopsided Kansas State with Bill Snyder was really good at that time. And you remember that day Ay, ay dio and I was a heck of a trip, the the Little Apple. And what were we talking about? Because I tell you what I got fairly comfortable with. I'm never forget one time at Rutgers. We didn't goes on TV, doing the biggest game of the week with Jeff Bostick at sea under the third coat here in Morgantown, West Virginia. It's a mountaineer, 66 records nothing. We'll be back with more right after this, and it was the same kind of stuff. Is that what you're that? That's probably where you going with this. Our discussion. Our discussion was not so much the play by play more discussion was how you close the game. How did you announced the final quarter? And and I know, I remember telling you, I said, you've got to keep the same energy Yes, and and you players. Are giving 100% That does not give Yeah, they give 100% too lowly One time. You're exactly right down there. Forget one time. Another time with Boss like we're doing a game in Philly. And we was on a Friday and we went down. He wiped that Jeff Plastic. You went through Super bowls with the Redskins. He wiped out like three or force cheesesteaks and Jim Simpson. This is pretty good. Anyway, we got to see my old man was still around, and he said, Yeah, I was watching a game last week. It was ah, one thing this is Ah, If the game sucks, doesn't suck doesn't mean you have to suck. Keep your keep your energy up because what we discussed I'm not so sure in a blowout game that they're playing 100% on the field, But who knows? You know you got Tio exactly 1/3 4th Three guys on on one team are playing there. But there's no question I had done a lot of games like that. Exactly. Hey, I didn't feel get back in the saddle today. Make do a few updates now was pretty good. Ah, Cee Lo wrote the two o'clock. And I said, No, I'll take care of the three I'll write the whole thing. Really. How good is that? I'd be somebody writes your updates. How greatest as That you have not done before, right? Yeah, I see what I was going to retire. Great. Yeah, well, somebody write my updates for me. Hey, Here you go, Honey. Get me rewrite. Uh what When you when this date rolls around, it's not July 1st. I understand that, but you know when we're celebrating it this weekend, But when it rolls around what's It's like one of the first few couple of things that you think of I think from my standpoint, the first thing I think of is the first anniversary. I think that that is the most important anniversary because at that time And I don't know about you, Eddy. I didn't know whether they be a first anniversary on and you know that that's Ah. I mean, they're so you could write a book about FAA and people have Ah, and you can spend the entire book on the first year, but I didn't know that there was going to be a first. But when I miss came aboard late, I guess would be early in the second year. That solidified everything. And we were on our way. You know, John Shannon was was the guy who brought me down and and he had actually hired me for something called Enterprise radio. Remember that 1981 was the precursor the ESPN radio, but ESPN had. It just wasn't time before you know, it was. It was not the wrong year. ESPN radio was, I think came into being about 45 years later. And way we got through. I think I'm going to say nine or 10 months didn't get through a year. I know that we're on and I was out of work again after that, and s O. That's the same feeling I had about FAA and like if you get to a year, I think I may be able to stay while it's up. So when I got to July or July 1st of 1988 it felt pretty good. Actually make that the point. I don't know if it felt safe, but it felt pretty good. That's so both of you guys were here.

"Yeah, back at you again as a matter of fact, in the three o'clock hour today on Sunday at Coleman here in New York The state of Washington. National Sports Caster of the Year for the last two years, Dave Simms on Seattle. Did you like how I suddenly slipped? Thank you, sir. Good afternoon, while that's right now afternoon it's afternoon here in Seattle. I think you trade with me Right now. We got 66 Sunday at 93. It's brutal up a cup of hot coffee. I don't know why I 95 degrees out in human. It's just it's awful. Around. Come on, man, You know, I know. You know, I'm gonna get the ice coffee. I don't know what I was doing. I don't know what I was thinking. They had a lot fun yesterday doing the show and we'll have more fun. Today is a matter of fact. Kim Jones going to join us? Little bit later, Duke Jim Duquette will join us as well. I think Larry Doby Junior is going to Jonas Jonas, Son of Larry Doby. Great lover knew our his dead on this date. 1947. Of the color barrier in the American League. And what are your names? Career? Great man passed a few years ago. There's good friend. Play football Do play in the minor leagues for awhile. Good guy. Great. Good players, So I'm a little older than you, Dave. So I actually and I started watching baseball. Probably when I was about seven or so. So I do remember Larry Doby. Remember how good a player he Waas Tio. He was trade with the Indians later with white socks, and before he retired, went into the hall. I think, but 20 years ago, so I don't know exactly. But it was about 20 years ago. I think Went into inducted into the Hall of Fame fame is a player 1998 98 22 years ago in back of a careers I look at the number I mean, he made the All Star game from 1949 through 1955 twice led the league in home runs once an R B eyes. Uh, leading slugging once on O P s about player. Yeah. How about this That I mean, nobody paid attention to O P s back in that day, but for three's out of three straight years, he had over a 900 0 ps on number three straight. Yeah, there's 51 or 50 53 52 somebody, but Probably best year was 50 for when they went to the World Series and ended up getting sweat there, but he had a great year that year 32 in 1 26 8 47 Oh, P s. That's that's big time, and I mean he posted to 101 154 games. In those years. He played 153 675 plate appearances. It's the most in his career and officially bees. He had 5 77 So I mean, that's every day. A man you know you got him in the lineup. He was Let's see. 8 76 career. Oh, Pius, hey, was was solid, solid player played every day Hardnosed player. Very good, Very, very good player. I remember when I was young and again, he retired. You know, I was still working like that. And you go up to Boston to say yes. The American looks at it. I did the time I started really paying attention to baseball. The ace had left Philly. So from figured, 1957. I'm figuring that's when I picked up baseball. Actually, a guy named George Anderson play second base on a limited basis because it went on to become a Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson. There's some bad Phillie teams, man. They let the What was that the whiskey It's rolled didn't move him and it didn't work out. Robin Roberts toiling and this static is gonna go on headset. You do have a little static on your static in Seattle. Live live from Mars, everybody. Um, yeah, but 1957 I think was here first start really getting looking Baseball aboutthe. Same time for men in love with it Ever since. I listen to. Ah, Louise Ross. Awhile ago, you had a press conference over at Citi Field is the Mets continue to workout to Graham through. Ah, some today. Let's see. What we're going to do is simulate again this afternoon, which is, which is good news. They're going to start that do some sim games. They've been doing live BP, They'll get into that. Um, Ed Rosario, Their shortstop, will get his first workout this afternoon. They have the starter's out there the other day, But human it's Andre Semanas was was subbing for Rosario Church is one of their top prospects. You guys have so many new names. Yeah, well, you know, it's unbelievably mean. It's the same with our club in Seattle. We got a bunch of kids start now, so And if I started running banter, you wouldn't know. Maybe here's Here's old name. That is kind of interesting. According to what Louis said today. Melky Cabrera, who you Well know, man, melt, man. There you go. Switch hitter, but he Ah Louise says that he's he's got a shot for the club, You know, obviously with the expanded rosters to because he is a career to 85 hitter always hit wherever he's been, But he can dhd and they actually said they may try. I'm a little bit of first base, which I thought kind of strange, but Is he's been an outfielder. I don't think he's ever played first base. Maybe he's messed around there a little bit, but it's It's another spot you could. But he's a switch hitter and listen. He can hit and he's versatile. So No one. I don't have a guy like that coming off your bench. You know, I think that helps an awful lot. So hey, signed him. Yeah, they sound in just a few days ago. Just prior to coming in. They can slash with the best of anyone a batting title. I think he did. Yeah, I'd have to check out. I don't remember. But I think it's possible you and you know, how do you feel about this? How do you fit about D h now in the national legal Easter this year? I think it's here for good. My side. Like I've always said that I'm not. I'm not a d h man. I'm just not because I like I like the National League style play, and I like having those decisions put on the manager to, you know, stick with your starter, or, you know, go to your pen. I like that in the game A TTE the same time. I've always said I'm not going to go kicking and screaming. It's going to change. It's gonna happen, and I think I think you put it in now. I don't see them taking it out. Next year. I'll be shocked if they do they do find, but I think it's here and that's that's just the way you go. Yeah, I grew up nationally guy. I've been doing baseball here in the American League now 13 years going into your 14 what? You've got to be used to it by now. Yeah. You know, I don't have a problem with it. And it keeps a guy like Nelson Cruz in the game. Big happy, And you're Martinez of Harold Baines in the Hall of Fame measures in the Hall of Fame. Big Poppy will go in the Hall of Fame. L Nelly may have a shot. I just like the offensive component and knowing that And it's I don't want to say I don't want to equate it to softball or anything like that. But it's nice to know that you got a hammer in the for five or six, but that could drive. That's a run and it's you know, it's all about scoring runs. "Gonna talk to her mask and all that. But in a lot of fun, it's interesting. You say that about being weird. Spread out right before you came on. About last 15 20 minutes. David Price said he's going to bag the season. Freddie Freeman has has the virus. Mike Trout is wavering eyes, everybody, you know, staunchly behind plan right now. Is there any Any wavering anything with the guys on your ball club that you've spoken with. Uh, stars I know, Know, know, we've been having different groups come in and out. And those pretty staggers been long days to these trainers in the coaching, but But so I haven't spoken to everybody but As far as I have heard, And you know, I didn't know David David Price is playing this year. Yeah, that just that just moved in the last few minutes. Wow. I did not hear that. Yeah, He just he opted out from the Dodgers Dodgers just announced that a short while ago. You know, Stephen, we're talking about Steven Matz of the match. You know, one of the things I I guess a misconception or at least it seems that way at this point that when pictures came back, you know how ready they'd be and whether they could ramp up in time. It seems like you know a lot of the guys air. I know Clayton Kershaw's that he's going to go on throw five innings on Monday, Sures err seems to be okay. But you seem to be on track that you might be able to go fairly deep your first time. At least that's the sense that you get kind of around baseball. Do you feel that that'll be the case? Yeah. You know, the biggest thing that holds me back right now is if you know. Through who are any on a week from Wednesday? Okay? This past Wednesday, so Now I'm kind of far out from Actually facing hitters, So it's like all this travel and then getting tested in quarantine and that kind of coming back into schedule. It's kind of like throwing me off a little bit, really, if I would have Jump, you know? Just blowing right up here and got started. I would have been registered five. But I mean I could I could still probably throw five. But it's kind of like it's going to be probably too. Two weeks. Insides aren't in the game at this point now. Wow. So that's the only thing that holds me back travel in the quarantine all that. Do you think they'll think they'll be a little careful, you know, kind of air on the side of caution with with all you guys right now, at least in the first week or something. Yeah, I think so. I think there's no point in the first time unless you feel like you personally need to like, maybe Kershaw Chirchir like to do that, But I don't think it's necessarily Super important going Throw five. You know, I think he isn't into it a little bit. Make sure your good and then kind of random back up from there. But, you know, I could technically be good to go for Last year. Steven Match with us from the Mets, Young left hander You went 11 and 10 last year. What kind of things you looking Tio build upon improve for this season. Just everything that the main thing I I would love to improve on just going deeper into games. You know, that was kind of my mind. That is You're going deep into the game. There's normally stuff going, right. So whatever that looks like from there, I just want to go deeper in the game. I don't want to be pitching the 78 penny.

"So I think I was contract as faras like that I would keep up. What? I was just getting exactly like like where you left off. You. You You felt like you did. You were in pretty good shape When you When you came yesterday. Yeah, definitely. We have a good group of guys in Franklin and National area that we Way had a bunch of guys that would be in a field And, you know, once a week, throw a lot of TV. Thankfully, the virus didn't hit too bad when I was down there, So you know, after our little shelter in place, we kind of got back out and after it, you know, I was throwing morning clutch hitters by the end of it, so it was really good. The virus didn't just a tornado. Remember that when that happened back in? What was that? That was you weren't there. I think it's time. I know. You're what I think your wife, asshole, but it missed. I missed you by a little, I think, right? Yeah. And then we have these things called a straight line. Wind came through it took took down trees. I lost power for, like, five days of No, that is a great How was it? Ah, getting, you know, getting back and getting on to citifield, even with social distancing, and that was it a little stranger or didn't feel good, Steve. Ah little boat. Definitely strange. I mean, it was expecting going in, you know. Talking to Brody and some of the other guys. You know Louis and Hafner They do that It's going to be an advantage. If we take this very seriously, you know, and we keep guys forget the virus. It could potentially be an advantage. If I do that They were going to be very strict with Social distance thing and wearing lab keeping guys apart everything, and so far, they've done a great job, you know, and taking very seriously, But on the other hand, it was great being out on the field and just kind of Throwing the ball around to be in the stadium just felt felt great to be out there. Stephen, How do you guys have you? You look at your starting rotation that stack that up against Thea other teams in their division I know from, you know, I'm in the American League West and I look at that your division. I think it's pretty stacked up. You know how How do you guys You know? How do you compare yourself to the other rotations in your division? Yeah, I think I mean, I'll take up against anybody. I mean, I think you know it's tough to lose, Noah, but, um, you know, we have.

"Sports Radio 66 Back together again and back on the fan and the five o'clock hour at Goldman, Dave Simms here. I'm in New York. He's in Seattle. Um, Carp is down in Washington. I think anyway, and we're gonna head down there right now. And welcome in the voice of the Washington nationals on their TV side. Bob Carpenter, our friend Bobby, How are you doing? Well, Eddie, great to hear your voice. I'm actually not in D C yet. Okay. Live in Tulsa, Oklahoma have for many decades, but four of them heard so. But so I guess we have all parts of the country Representative click. So, David, the great Northwest here on the Eastern Seaboard. And I'm somewhere in a flyover state in between you all good to hear your voice. Carp didn't hear. Hey! Ah! What would you do with your world Championship ring? Well right now it's it's over at my house. And you know, I have I have. I built a moat around the house. I got a couple of attack dogs. So if anybody has any ideas, forget it. You know, I think it was about Maybe a week and 1/2 ago, when we got our rings, they are the size. Of the Is there a least bigas any Super Bowl ring I've ever seen. And you guys know me. I'm not exactly an offensive lineman. I could almost get two of my fingers and I hear it. So when I put it on those above my knuckle It is very large, and it's actually my second ring I had won with the Cardinals back Ino four. That's already got swept by the Red Sox. But, you know, we did get a ring that had Some nice diamonds and a red ruby cardinal on it. That says nationally champions, but it's It's the ultimate when you get a ring that says world champions on its nice and I feel very grateful, unfortunate. That the learner family included the broadcasters in on that and I don't know it may end up in the safe deposit box is in about two weeks. I'll be heading back up to D. C. Wow. Well, you and everything, but it's not anything you walk around town. No, no way. Yeah, that's that's probably a good idea. You on FB deserve it anyway. And I, you know and and listen, it has to be special. Just because of what that team went through. Ah, last season. You know when you guys are We're sitting at what was at 1931 1 on. Yeah, well, you know, it's interesting that you bring that up because I was I remember doing the math last year. Obviously, that's 50 games into the season, right? Quite 1/3 of the way but only four game short of that. And to get the 90 wins out of the 112 remaining games. The Nationals had to win 71. Wow. Of those 112 to get the nineties. Well, they won 74 of those games to get to 93. And probably had as much. Momenta Mohr. You know, maybe more than anybody in baseball, the addicts. Just a great run. And, of course, the you know, the 1931 that was on the heels, and I know you remember this weekend at Citi Field. It's when the Mets swept the nationals. We had a bullpen melt down almost every night. I think we led in all of the games. And you're jittery. Yes. And then met. You pulled out a little bit of magic. I said, Hey, man, I got to give those Mets fans credits. The atmosphere in your ballpark. That weekend was anything I've seen regular season play off you name it. In my 36 years doing Major League baseball. The Mets fans were unbelievable than that somehow gathered themselves from a devastating weekend. They got things turned around. They got trade Turner back healthy. They got Anthony. Run. Don't back healthy. The bullpen sort of figured out. Poor Sean do little. The guy couldn't comb his hair by September left arm. You know, he he was the only guy getting anybody out and he had one or two of those meltdowns in New York. It was great. It was a great case study in staying together, not panicking. As Davey Martinez said. Our manager go want to know every day they were able to do that, and it's a testament to team sports. You can get off to a start like that and still win a championship. Now you get off to a start like that, in 2.5 weeks. Your dead weight. It's not gonna happen. It's the beauty of baseball Long season, It's the marathon and the nationals were able to be one of the greatest comeback stories. People were comparing them to the miracle Braves. 19 for attack. I think it was either night there was either 1914 or 1916. Yeah, came back at one dependent, and it was that historic what the nationals did last year. I gotta ask you a personal question. Anthony Rendon's killed us last time were in D. C. And, as, uh, This pandemic is wrecked a true trip to D. C because we're going to be planned. You guys at your place? But who's ran down to free agency Now I'm going to see him while next year let's say 19 times along with Trump. Good luck getting them. I'll tell your pictures that tell me about it. I mean trout's gonna be batting second with Ren. Don't behind them on Connie, behind. Both talked to Gabi about that in about 1/2 hour, but Who? What's the story of third who's taken over third base for Ren? Don't who are really like Well right now it appears And maybe the short season helps this kid. His name is Carter Key Boom number one draft pick. About three years ago, he had an older brother Spencer, who is the catcher in the organization. Great family. Great parents have gotten to know them over the years. He's a really good kid. He physically he looks like Cal Ripken man. Well, he's a He's a big told Lynnfield he can play shortstop. In fact, he played some there last year. When trade Turner was hurt when you got hit by the pitch and broke his finger. Hey, got off to kind of a good start. But, you know, you know how that goes, guys. It was a figure. Okay, He can hit the fastball that you're not going to see any more of those. At the big League level, So he was up for about two weeks. And, you know, hit a buck something but went back to AA trip away out there in Fresno and had a pretty good season. He's a big, strong kid. He's got power. He's a line drive fitter. He's a plus defender with good hands and a good arm. But right now we have trade Turner at shortstop..

"Okay, that I guess we'll be in the papers for tomorrow. But you were talking about minor league ball because he hit it struck a chord with me back. You know, it's one thing that that I guess I worry about with the game of baseball. No minor league season. This year you wrote about the minor leagues and obviously the condensing of the minor leagues to come. You know, I don't worry about the Louisville's and the Oklahoma City is in the round rocks and places like that, But I do. Worry about, you know, say the Hudson Valley renegades or ah, the smaller towns in the Midwest because that's that's where you get you know the people who are going to fall in love with this game and future generations. And and now you know, those those places are gone and all in a lot of cases and That concerns me, probably more about the game down the line. Yeah, I couldn't agree with that. But that's more. I mean, you're like I mean, you know you have We have to be lucky, and I was lucky. I was born in New York. So obviously my first contact with baseball is the best of the Yankees. Most people weren't most people's contact with baseball is hundreds of miles away from usually team and so the first time we're actually able to see professional baseball players may be, you know. A classic short guy who's got those shadow big. It's a big league, but you know you couldn't have to actually make a living playing baseball for summer, and there are millions of people who came to baseball that way. And you're right. That's not going to be on option for a lot of these cities anymore. This is so discouraging, but that seems to be the way baseball is headed. Um, You know what I wrote about? The column was here and I got to cover north to two small short scene in Class 18 94. The Valley renegades up in Fishkill on the futures of cardinals over Augusta Do Juries just amazing. Every day you get your pack and go You know the impact of these players having small communities, but you multiply that by all the other teams that were around in the country. That you have allowed people to truly embraced baseball for the first time, and that's going to take it away. I mean, it's just that that could be irreplaceable part of baseball Solan I'm just not sure how you reported that. I don't think you do. I don't fake it. I know that you could make it up, but I think that's gonna be real problem. I really do. Yeah, that's gonna be difficult and Having read a lot about those talents and oh, man, so many jobs. Not only with the ball club Yeah, I mean the players. But, you know, people work on the ball club and they all Ansel everything. So no question about a back, always good talking to you even better reading you. Hopefully we get through this season and maybe a couple of other sports seasons as well and hopefully we keep chugging along. Got a lot to get through, but hopefully it all works out for the best, but it's just so looking forward that all settling, it's really been a lot of fun talking with you guys. "For an ESPN NINETY. Three ninety four and economic four. So I didn't really know him and I just remember I type Met Him once with the white sox couple years before that and then so now he comes to us and I went in and introduced myself. So I'm and I tell you what I thought I could talk. We talked about so many things you talked about his family. I got after like we had a conversation at his at his walk. I think it was after workouts. Like an hour and Change. It was amazing and just Just a wonderful open for me that that I know I mean. He's a people person He loves the talk and and he loves his family and he and another time I went to put his home In my son we're doing some business. Brio mad our place from golfing. He's got every you know he's. His home is magnificent and he around. He's got he's got closets bigger than my first couple of apartments here in New York. So I mean it's He's become a friend and and you know when I had I went to my press thing. He he called his old man over to me. And you're GonNa be alright me through the process and everything so the Griffey's Griffey's a big of my book. I really so I tell people all the time you do too. I'm sure you know what's this person like. What's this person like? And they asked me about Ken Griffey Junior. And my answer. Always is you know what my personal experience wasn't great where you walk in his visiting a reporter that he doesn't know actually with the reds when this happened any remember him sort of corrupting humping at me a little bit and then him waiting because he's you know basically. I was standing over waiting for him to talk. I'm watching him interact with the clubhouse kids and they love him and athletic trainer and they love him and so the way that I came away and you know better than I do. The way it came away. Was you know what he he? He's lived in this fishbowl of attention so knuckleheads like me. You know he doesn't need folks like me But I so I can understand why he kinda keep me at arm's length but I tell friends all the time I guarantee you that if you're you his next door neighbor you would love him. 'cause you could see how is relationship was with people in the clubhouse. Yeah he's the he's the Best I've ever seen it. I've been lucky to cover a lot of sports. And he takes care of those guys at and he does a lot of stuff he doesn't WanNa be doesn't WanNa show he told me chapter and verse. About yeah. I was born with a lot of talent but I work my butt off and I was up in my batting cage at one o'clock in the morning and nobody saw me. And he he's he's grumbles the that'd take a lot of batting practice. Yelich four o'clock five o'clock he'd already done at one two o'clock. Am Come on and then there were many times. I'm totally in his first run through Seattle. That he was big with the children. You know make a wish. And all those kinds of groups and befriending kids and making you know just making them feel at ease and and walking welcoming them into the clubhouse and giving them everything and eat some now. He's he's fabulous in every there's no question all right. What was it like to to watch Felix Hernandez do work there artiste? I mean I grew up in the sixties. So you know I'm a Colfax Shell Gibson Guy This guy did a little bit different The change up The breaking ball is just ridiculous and then when when I got there no seven I mean he could hump it up. He was consistently ninety five. Plus and again you know I. I don't have this totals in front of me. But I can guarantee he should have at least eighty more wins on his window because there have been so he went one year where I think he broke our seaver record or something most games seven innings plus one run three hits and half and most of those games were no decisions though. Decisions or heartbreaking losses. He leaves the game with a lead. And somebody gives up to bomb to win at eighth and ninth inning mean so much heartbreak in his easy to root for and during that time when he had not support would he's pitched better to gave up to pit two hits and struck out nine. One what are you talking about? But he said I just got to do a better job. And he firmly firmly believe that best thing for him is the pitch at his optimum and be a great teammate. And I don't think in terms of being a team I never heard that word about Felix during my time with temps would've been like seven through this past year. Yeah you know what was really cool. was that After he signed that big contract he he lived in Seattle during the offseason. Remember hearing that from folks on the organization how unusual that was and again. It reminded me that what I was saying about. A junior and the reaction to the clubhouse guys never forget when Felix sign that long-term deal When he was getting are getting off an elevator yet the ball and they're all employees are waiting for them and they gave them a big cheer and he he began to cry. Yeah he did and I. I remember you know live here. I live here in New York so I saw that when they posted it online and I thought it was one of the neatest things I've ever seen in sports. You know. They put out online in a hole in all of SAFECO field to mobile fly. Everybody down to the basement going Felix comes out to the news kind of pretend you know everybody in the building. Was there a couple of three hundred people? And he. He shed tears man. It was It was emotional and it was really it just shows you how much he meant to. Seattle the other thing of. Course when they started the king's Court and when he was dealing man and he would have. They'd have those Blue and gold placards and people would come in and they charge a reasonable fee. You go and sit in the left field corner near the foul pole and where these gold t shirts. I'll never forget that before. They formalized that there would be a group of people down there and phillies would be. You know he'd be a six or seven bending and you'd have five or six strikeouts and I elvis. I this chant I'm going there saying KKK. And I said wait a minute I just said. Kkk On them on actually broadcast on Cape Ripa. Strikeout people write anything misconstrued here. You know what I'm talking about. Who is your big influences? And broadcaster got a lot Bill Campbell for one did the Phillies sixers enables in Philly. "I'm doing you know and just we had some nice weather this weekend. You know that's something you know. We take what we can get these days right. Yeah it's absolutely beautiful up here. In the northeast it's supposed to be for the next few days So over the weekend Japan reported the exhausted protocol. Sixty seven pages that came from Major League Baseball sent to the Players Association. And I'm sure that for some players reading that it'll be somewhat daunting but my first thought when I read it. Was You know what to this point? A lot of the people who are involved in generating this or the doctors and the lawyers in everyone's GonNa feel like they need check every box and do their job. What do you think I just think? They're so many so many considerations and I think we see that from what we've heard and seen about different states trying to open up and everything else and obviously for a a world like Major League Baseball Micro Environment. Whatever it is they do have to consider everything. And I definitely think that's why you get lists that are exhausted like that. All right coming up. We're going to be talking with Dave Sims the play by play man for the Seattle Mariners. And I'M GONNA be asking him about his signature home run calls in other words the homerun calls it. He'll use repeatedly not like the the one that Joe Buck Jackpot cad when he called Kirk Gibson's home run in the nineteen hundred eight world series. Where he says. I cannot believe what I just saw. this is these are the calls that broadcasters make on a regular basis on home runs and I sent an email on Sunday evening about this and it got me. Going and thinking about you know the different homerun calls. They were here. And there's so many great ones and must be like John. Sterling needs to have a category.
