"That's not the way it is anymore. They could take him out and ending early when they have to, and really manages innings. Really, really effectively, So I think we're seeing the benefit now of some great management By Dave Roberts. In the past, and Dave Roberts and the justice that Mark Pryor is helped Clayton make overall the very good game planning they have Jim. We're seeing the best version of Clayton that we've seen in a while. And as you mentioned this is now one of the best starts he has gotten off to in the last half dozen years of very good sign for the Dodgers right now, early on in the season, Marosi is joining us, John one more thought about the Dodgers before we move on, if anybody was expecting them to have a World Series hangover. They fire out 13 and three. They've got a plus 38 run differential. What do you make of their starts so far to the season? Well, Jim, I'm glad you asked that way because we should make sure that we point out they have a former M V. P and Cody Bellenger on the injured list. Right now. They also hot Jock Peterson and Kiki Hernandez, two of the mainstays in the lineup. In recent years. And so what happens? They take Zack McKinstry, a 33rd round draft pick from Central Michigan University here in the Great State of Michigan, and they make him into a consistent everyday player through some great player development. They've got a phenomenal player development director in will rhymes. That is how you become a dynasty. In modern baseball. You can spend money like the Dodger spend, but then you could develop players the way the Rays develop players and all the sudden you're missing Bellenger and you plug McKinstry and look how well he's playing. And I also want to point out to talk about how Mookie Betts continues to amaze us. Remember that game saving catch he made the other night. That's playing his second position. You've playing center field. He's playing there because calendars out and that just speaks to the versatility of this team. They're off to such a great start. And the final point that I'll make to Jim is that they've brought in some players who haven't won yet. Trevor Bauer hasn't won. Yet. You're changing out of few key pieces he bringing Cory can able in the bullpen. You bringing Jimmy Nelson in the bullpen? You've got four different relievers already have recorded saves. Jim, It is just about impossible to find a glory weakness on the divers roster right now John Marosi back in the jungle, and they will run it back starting Thursday with a four game set. So, John. What about the other end of the spectrum? You've got the Yankees. They've lost five in a row. They've got the worst record in the American League. Exactly what is happening to them right now? Is it a bad start or their legitimate causes for concern? The great question, Jim. I think it's a combination of both. And actually, as we speak right now, Brian Cashman is meeting with the media in New York. It doesn't sound like there's any announcement and he sort of shake up. This is what a GM in New York should do when the team's playing poorly, be out front. Be accountable. Explain what's going on. One thing I've noticed in the metrics back this up fangraphs dot com has them as The worst team in the American League East at hitting fastballs. And so if you're getting overwhelmed by fastballs and not producing, and your rotation isn't quite lined up either. You're gonna have a challenging season. And the thing that I think makes me the most concerned right now, Jim is the A L East is a pretty mediocre version of itself. The Jays don't have Springer or Tasker Hernandez. The Red Sox are getting by with really a creative roster and some good managing early this season by Alex Cora. But that's not a great Red Sox team. The Rays are off to a whole home star, too. And yet the Yankees can't take advantage, and that's what makes me concerned the overall depth of the club. We just talked about that McKinstry and names like Railly with the Dodgers and how how good they are with some young players. The Yankees don't quite have that same level of depth. They've had some injury issues and some age showing up and they have not been able to infuse that young depth to support them..
Dodgers' Bellinger has hairline fracture in left leg
"L. a. times the beat writer for the dodgers is reporting the dave roberts said that a recent test showed a hairline fracture in cody. Bellinger's leg and roberts says it's not a day to day thing. He said it's a fractured his left. Fibula show cody is not in the lineup. Obviously today no gavin lex today or aj pollick as well today tonight. Excuse me and this bellinger thing now that the dodgers have a lot of depth right. That guy's an mvp candidate right the last several years for the most part outside of a weird wacky season last year l. i. That is not the news you want to hear of your dodger fan.

"And when I hear you opening the Monday show with baseball off the top, my friend I am excited, especially in April, and that is a great sign. I think it has something to do with that. So, Cal rivalry going on right now has nothing to do with that, John. And you know exactly where I'm going with it. You can't read my mind perfectly, man. I was so fired up if we go back to Friday. A John. I was really excited for that series. Now that we have seen this series, in your opinion, how great was that? And then what does that tell you about the battle between these two teams that we can expect over the course of the season? A great weekend for baseball. That's the headline for me, Jim because it lived up to the billing to the hype, but we had three great games that were in doubt. Late. The signature Mookie Betts catch. Yeah, the Clayton Kershaw R B I yet David Price with the key R B I on then, of course, the Padres answering yesterday with a game they had to have now. It's hard to say a must win in April. But this is going to be a rivalry we watch unfold during the season, and it would have been certainly not a great look at all for the Padres to be swept on their home field. In April by the reigning World Series champions. So yesterday was a very important statement by the Padres. We know Todd teeth is not yet fully himself, but Machado and Hosmer delivered big for the Padres. Him overall, so many great storylines and the thing I love about this rivalry. What you said earlier in the show is exactly right. This is the best thing going in baseball right now, and what's making it special is the characters involved. We know these players. You may have strong opinions about them. You may like them. You may not like them, too, depending on where you're at around the country. What we have characters with stories that we know and I think that's giving this rivalry a great texture. First Apollo during the course of the season extremely well, said John Marosi is joining us. I agree with you, John like normally would seem absurd. To call a game in April a must win game, but I think the Padres had to have that game and they get it. You know, You also pointed out John on Twitter that through four starts this season, Clayton Kershaw's ER is 2.19 his second best deal Ray at the point this point in this season over the last five years for a while, now, people have been looking to bury him and saying that his best baseball's behind him. How does he look to you so far this year? Very good. Jim. His fastball is lively. It is up in the zone. It's moving. The breaking stuff is sharp again. I think, Jim as we look back over the last couple years, and certainly Clayton spent some time on the injured list. Going back the last several years at various points. And then I believe that he was the beneficiary of a lighter workload Last year, I certainly he would have loved to have a full seven months season. We all realize that everybody wanted that. But at the end of the day, he has pitched Ah, lot of innings. Jim and a lot of them have been high stress eating a lot in October. Ah, lot of times when he was out there. During previous incarnations of the Dodgers when they didn't have quite the same level of supporting cast when he had to be the workhorse late in the season. That's not the way it is anymore. They could take him out and ending early when they have to, and really manages innings. Really, really effectively, So I think we're seeing the benefit now of some great management By Dave Roberts. In the past, and Dave Roberts and the adjustment that Mark Pryor is helped Clayton make overall the very good game planning they have Jim. I will say this older rosters like the Yankees have You don't necessarily see a ton of growth in them in a positive way of the year goes along older roster. Not performing well in April is usually a very bad combination. John Marosi breaking down the American League East completely. I can't even follow any of that. He answered All my questions, John. What about Ronald Kuna junior and leaving yesterday's game to do an abdominal issue? What have you heard about that?.

"With Yankees Red Sox. No disrespect to Boucher in there. I know he's began keeping. But after a while you get kind of burnt out on that. Don't you like every Sunday Yankees Red Sox every Sunday. So now you're bringing in a couple of newer teams that playing the game in the more is a little more flare out there on the field. I think he's a good I think it's good for baseball, no matter how you slice it, and I believe there. They're meeting again this weekend. Oh, nice. I think I got it. I think they go to Dodger Stadium this weekend. Yeah. Why? Wait around? Let's go again. It's a four game set. Actually. Yeah, they go. Thursday. Thursday. Money. 30 Sunday. You might need to see what Constantine the UMP is doing for that. Seriously, maybe get like, has a couple of tacos with him and watch the game team. I wanna, you know, toss Dave Roberts and Jace Tingler copes. Can I get Constantine.

"I was nervous. I was scared. I was excited. It was freezing. Cold at fenway park. Were down three zero. I see mariana on the mound. And i'm like gosh. I'm just scared right and Maury wills who. I have his jersey right behind. Me always told me says. Dr one of these days. You're going to steal a base and you'd have to steal a base with everyone in the ballpark nausea steal. And you can't be afraid to take that base and so that was kind of the one angel on one shoulder and the other angel for these baseball fans. Bill buckner who in eighty six. There was a ball between his legs. And from that point on red sox fans blamed him for that losing other world series and that was game six of losing game seven anyway but regardless i had built on the other side so for me mori one out. I was prepared for that opportunity. Got a great job Through over three times almost got me. Think the second throw over. But after as base-stealer you once eighth rover once two times three times. It just lock. She win your instinct with everything and mind you. I had played in over a week since that moment so if he would probably delivered at that point in time i probably wouldn't have went on the first pitch but after he threw over one two and three times i had him on like the top guard. Maverick radar luck. Lock so and then. I just got a good jump and derek makes tag and He just goes. How f- did you just do that. So i got a big kick out of that. Billie miller ex cubby drove me in which is very underrated. That play and i love billy to death. That tying run. We end up playing extra innings. David walks it off and then we ended up proceeding to win eight straight game so people look at. That is kind of a turning point. So i'm just humbled to be a part of it dude. You have these amazing moments as a player. Something so special like that to be able to manage a great team to a world series championship. Sometimes you sit back and just pinch yourself and say wow what a life. I'm living i. Do i do that all the time. I look at ben with my wife for twenty five..

"They've got some benches clearing stuff, so it became a real thing You know a couple of years ago in terms of yet this is a rivalry in the divisions. It's probably ah, little more intense than or much more intense than the Red Sox Yankees rivalry, So that's one problem. Um, the Rays just they don't match up well, and the Rays, you know, keep finding ways to keep beating them with much less payroll and less household names on the roster, But you know beyond that Um No, It's an offense that can be a juggernaut juggernaut of an offense when you know they're scoring and they're clicking, and they could put a lot of runs up on the board doesn't seem like they've been quite been able to do that with any type of consistency. And you know what that said, Like we talked about some of these other teams, whether it's the Cubs or whatever. I could save much more confidence in the potential of the offense of the New York Yankees to get things on track, but It's almost like there's something missing a little bit. If there was one thing that I would point to that I would there was a concern. Um, you know, I would say just, you know, Starting rotation, you know, death. I know. They added, you know, a couple of guys Um, that at one time were, you know Pretty, You know, solid pictures. I mean, Cy Young Award winning pitcher and Cory clubber and in all of that, But how is that going to pan out and will it be strong enough? To hold them in games when the offense isn't like just Breaking out in scoring a tunnel runs like they're very capable of doing so, So we'll see. You know, over the course of the season, but I hope it goes well. My buddy Boonie, you know, he's at the helm manager there and, you know, New York can be a tough place when things aren't going well. And you know the pressure can mount so Hopefully they'll figure it out and everybody can Breathe a little easier. Sleep a little better at night, and baseball can be more enjoyable. Dodgers Padres Syriza's was pretty exciting this week, and I did not stay up until nearly three a.m. for that first game on Friday, But nonetheless when you have a manager, saying, this is a playoff atmosphere three weeks into the season, and that was from Dave Roberts, I believe was Saturday morning when I saw it, But are we seeing something? Within this like Is this the new star studded rivalry in Major League baseball, or we started to see that form between these two teams. Yeah, I would say so corny. I mean, it's You know, we think about what are the best rivalries right now, Like everybody default to Red Sox Yankees. That's not a great rivalry. It really hasn't been for a long time, Other than just, you know, history and that the two markets and everything else with the franchises, but in terms of like Yeah, This is, uh this is a must see, like Syriza's, Um, it's not the Red Sox Yankees. It is because of marketing and boss, but I really think You know you have the potential with what the Padres and Dodgers have done you no talent, wise, roster wise. The success The Dodgers, you know, have had over, you know, many years. Woman in the World Series Championship last year. But in the Padres, you know the talent and you know, having You know, one of the best off seasons and all the baseball and continuing to add to it already postseason team they had last year and having some real stars on that team. Yeah, I mean, it's there's a lot of talent out there in Southern California between these two ball clubs, and so We'll be in less than two hours away. Um, you get some fans that there could be able to be it, You know, you know, in all the games, you know whether it's in L, A or San Diego, regardless of who they're rooting for, so Yeah, I think it's a really good time to be a Dodgers or Padres fan. And to be able to take in some of those theories. There was a time where the serious is just like a whole home. Chris. I'm sorry. I gotta I gotta cut you off here is we're running up against a hard out. I apologize that we're running out of time here. But ESPN radio analyst Chris Singleton joining us here on the Goodyear Hotline. Chris, we appreciate you joining us in your call today. "Do you see that and be able to pass that story long to younger players. Be able to help them out. I i think for me it was. It was that chip on my shoulder. I went to ucla. Thought i perform well and obviously didn't Reflect on the scouts decision teams decision to draft me. I was drafted low. I signed for a whopping thousand dollars. but that was a chip on my shoulder. And i think that you know in baseball where we play. It's always a marathon not a sprint. You talked about players and coaches always talking about. There needs to be a sense of urgency. So for me I always had that sense of urgency. I always had to play well and felt at every opportunity that i did get I had to earn. And i didn't want to give it away and i wanna take full advantage of it so Being a twenty round draft pick continue to kind of work my way up the ladder spending five years in the minor leagues Dot kind of motivated me. Every time i took the field You know i was talking to James shields the other day. We were playing golf and he had a longer career. And we're both talking about that. We leave anything on the table. We left it all out in the field and for me right now as i sit here with us i i left it all out there on the field and respect of my teammates my coaches. I think i've earned that and it started kind of the being drafted really late and having chip on my shoulder Speaking to competing out on the field. So we're playing against each other and this is two thousand six may eight. I went and found the date. I looked this up. I don't know if you remember this. I hadn't pitched a week. I was closing for the team. And we came to san diego and you guys were winning seven to three and you lead off the inning and you drag a bunt for a base hit. Yup do you remember how mad i was you. When i looked over.

"And so you know to see his tears and the fan base. You know and i've got so many letters and emails and texts about people with grandparents and things like that you just don't understand the scope of and you know you know in chicago. That was one hundred six years. And i was fortunate to be on. The red sox team eighty six years in boston. So you know it's thirty. Two years is still a long time. But you don't really realize the scope of what. Winning champion does for a city and people individually bomb guys. Because you guys didn't get a parade. But then i said all they needed to do was just follow each other in rush hour. Traffic in la. Speed racer. I hear you man. No doubt That's the one thing about I guess if. I can point to one that the pandemic has been a positive to la. Traffic is certainly subsided But i will say man. I had dreams of Having a parade with the lakers in los angeles lebron. Mookie betts kershaw. That would have been crazy. Oh by the way speaking of mukhi beds. Could you be any more of an impact. You get traded with all the expectations of the world. And i know mookie and he's such a great kid and he just cares about going win baseball games you make that trade and then he comes over and boom. He does exactly. Everything's asked and more and you guys go out and win the world series. I just don't know how he does it. I really don't and you talked about a guy who's five nine one eighty who is just. I mean i guess you can say overachiever. But he's just the biggest compliment debt. I can give him is. He's present and i've seen a lot of superstars played against played with you the same but when you're talking about a superstar who's present and i say that in all facts factors whether i'm having a conversation with them whether a coach a teammate whether it's in the batter's box weather's in right field whether it's talking to a reporter young fan this guy is present and now to give that person or group their full undivided attention and still to perform at an elite superstar level. That's very difficult because a lot of the players that i played with feel like if you're giving to your teammates and others you're sacrificing your own performance so a guy that can kind of balanced boat and play at this superstar level. It's very rare. And there's not many guys come into a clubhouse and change an has the culture and mookie did that and You know. I don't wanna put him on the same level as tom brady. But he's doing a lot of things that tom obviously digital bucks in this year. Well you know you got a talent pool over there in l. a..

"The field have responsibility and regardless of results dem. We're gonna kind of take the field and do it so certainly. It was challenging to kind of have a meeting. After you lose in the world series you lose eighteen or eighteen in the world series and It and nineteen. You get eliminated early in the in the wildcard series against the eventual champions national sell. There's a changing of a message but there's also the same messaging and continue to do what we do believe in each other and would we'll get across the finish line and so with twenty doubt. I just couldn't be more proud of everything we had to go through With the pandemic with the social issues that we had off the field and is still a prevails champs and hey i couldn't agree more like You know talking talking with david. Ross about it You know the first year managing for him and he gets thrown into this pandemic. I felt like twenty twenty might have been the hardest year to have to be a manager to all the things that players and coaches and protocols that had to be followed. Did you feel that way. Did you feel like it was an extremely difficult season. I did i did. And it's interesting the The narrative of we're Spring training two point. Oh and were approaching the twenty season and people are saying asterix and you know it. Sixty games or shouldn't count. Whoever the champion at that time was going to be may right But then as we look out or we look back and we go through that season and how americans have gone through this year or went through. Got through twenty Anything that you do and twenty is an accomplishment so for us to balance all that stuff out play without fans certainly not an asterix. I think that you should put an exclamation mark on that championship but Hopefully we can get back to some sense of normalcy. I know it's not going to be early on in this season but Baseball is something that our country needed at that point in time and i just couldn't be more proud of of the entire industry kind of it happen. Dave we talked about it. You touched on it. Briefly there Twenty twenty not just the pandemic but the social issues in the country. You are a man of of two different races. Your black your asian house special. Was it for you to be the second black manager ever behind cedo gassing which i remember nineteen ninety early blue jays win the world series there and then also to be the first ever asian born manager. Those are two pretty incredible accomplishments. Right there it is. It is and i don't take that lightly. I do have a hard time. Sort of recognizing that and appreciating. I think i'm guilty of living in the now. And i think as a manager you know you're always trying to look forward and and think about how on the margins you can continue to be better But guys this game is so difficult if you can't enjoy winning a championship that what are we doing this for So yeah i got a call from seato a man. I did it no But i certainly respected from afar. I've never been at ucla when the blue jays when he led that blue jays team Back to back championship so for him to get a call for media..

"But i i gotta tell you about sloan's no touch handwashing technology. It's state of the art second to none and couldn't come at a better time so we want to thank them for providing that technology to the people out there so we can all wash our hands and stay safe well. This is a thrill it's not too often. You get to sit down. Get into the mind of a world series champion manager and we got a great one. So let's get right to it and go off the mound with dave robbins. Doc how are you. Thanks so much for joining us doubt. I'm doing well It's been a long time since we had a chat Living my best life like you said. Come off the world series championship now at home in san diego Spending time family rare up to go so as we sit here right now. I've got a few more days. And i'm heading glendale i know. Can you believe it happens so fast rate like here. We were just a short time ago. You're on the field in texas winning the world series. Now you're two weeks away from pitchers and catchers in there. It's crazy and and i think it goes with twenty twenty with all the uncertainty and all the unique time so in baseball is no exception. So you know with all the rules. There was talk about pushing things back but i think as as a right. Now we're going to move forward. And you know adhere to protocols and get pitched and catches ear. And i got my first meeting on the seventeenth so i just got a wrap my head around that and i'm excited to go dow and defend our championship about that. I'm curious and like i haven't had a chance to talk to you about this. But you guys for years in a row right go into the nl cs going to back to back world series going the ds then getting there and finally getting that opportunity to say your champions. What was that feeling like chasing that carrot for so long and then finally just getting to eat the heck out of that thing. I think The chasing is relevant in that my first initial Emotion was relief. And i think that me as a manager. i didn't appreciate or give credit to And didn't want to intentionally of the pressure of having to bring attention back to a city after thirty two years But once we and kind of getting up to the top of the mountain and then a failing and trying to do it again and again and So once we you know. Julio serious made that last i got that last out there was relief and then shortly thereafter in the days following. There was a lot of joy elation. But i didn't appreciate. How much kind of pressure was kind of Know fighting off for so many years. How did you like to your players. What was your constant message to them because as players we can get frustrated when we get so close so many times and we don't get there. What was your your message that you relate to those guys. I'll tell you there's a reason. Why am am i bias. Are you biased. with professional athletes and specifically baseball players there is a resiliency There's a dna of having to kind of pick yourself back up after the game of failure. And so i think that baseball and with that there's a lot of successful people outside of baseball after their careers There's a brick. And i think with our guys it was just kind of preaching the fact of you know we are we are. We play a certain brand brandon baseball whether it's spring training whether it's in game seven of the world series. We respect the game on the field off..
MLB awards: Finalists unveiled for Manager of the Year
"The fact that MLB started doing this naming the three finalists. Am I telling you for the past couple of years, and they've they've announced the finalists for the major awards day towards being handed out next week Monday. Next Monday, is Rookie of the year man to the years next Tuesday. Cy Young is on Wednesday and then m V P, of course, is on Thursday. So to me, the most interesting one is the manager of the year, especially in the American League and usually like man who cares, But I think it's very interesting because The three guys who they've picked in the American League to be the manager of the year. One of them is Kevin Cash, who had a fantastic regular season but has been blasted for one managerial movie made in the World Series, which was taking Blake snout too early. Yeah, he pulled a Dave Roberts. Yeah, and it makes no sense to me at all. Why he would do that, And he's going to say it's the analytics. But if you look at the numbers Blake they're actually the third time through the lineup is better than he is the second time through the lineup. And he was making them look ridiculous. Absolutely. I mean, it was. It was just stupid. How bad they looked any just struck out the top three guys in the orders twice. So that means none of them had made contact Justin Turner. Mookie Betts. Corey Seager had made zero contact, and that's the Yoon said Betts doesn't swing and miss. He makes contact and he was he made. That's look ridiculous. He absolutely didn't know that. But this year better actually hit worse against lefties. Entity is right. But that's beside the point. Yes, so Kevin Cash is one Of the three managers. Charlie Montoya. The Bluejays is another one, which I think is great. And I think it's hilarious that the third manager of the heirs, Rick Renteria, who is no longer manage manager, he was relieved of his job. So we have a guy who made a horrible managerial decision guy who's no longer managing, then you're trying. Montoya.
Los Angeles Dodgers win World Series, but also become super spreaders of the virus?
"They won with a powerful lineup. But did they risk turning the world Siri's into a corona virus super spreader into a super spreader event? It Let's let's talk about the good things for a Shall we then Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series first time since 1988 and had been a long time coming in a lot of failed a lot of false starts at the beginning of this decade in terms of winning So many division titles and just sputtering in the playoffs, losing to the infamous Houston Astros in the 2017 world, serious getting beaten by the Red Sox in 2018, and this time they were great. They were fantastic. Even Clayton Kershaw that everyone talked about couldn't get the monkey off of his back. He comes out and wins. Two games in the series, and it was great for them. I think that they they did it the way that great teams are supposed to. They scored more than half of their runs with two outs. Everyone's looking for all that clutch. All those clutch performances and the Dodgers really did come through. They were They were fantastic. Even with the crazy game for 87 collapse that we thought was going to turn the Siri's around in a different direction tied it, too. But at the very At the next turn, The Dodgers come back and they never look back. They are champions, and they very much deserved it. Even though it was an eight game season. It was very much Before playoffs and everything else. Yeah, it's it's a legit championship. But but but but but Justin Turner removed from the game because it was positive for Corona virus. He returned for a celebration often mask lists hugging people. He sat next to Dave Roberts, the manager who is a cancer survivor, and therefore more at risk. How How do you finish that sentence? How do we characterize this? Well, he characterizes as a massive massive Hey, irresponsibility on the part of Justin Turner on the part of the Dodgers and certainly on the part of Major League baseball, even though Major League Baseball has tried to get out in front of this by laying the blame at the feet of Justin Turner, and it is his responsibility. However, I have a hard time believing that that he was allowed to play with an inconclusive test, so they took him off of the field after the test was Was found to be positive. But if you have an inconclusive test, how do you let him play in the first place? And so everyone's going to take responsibility for this, But this is what we're seeing across the board were seeing this at the University of Florida with all of their positive test. We're seeing it with the big 10 as well on the Big 10 had made the decision earlier not to play, and then they got bullied by the president into playing, and now they're canceling games. This is the thing Scott we talked about this months ago. Everyone saw this coming, but this country has just made a decision not to care about it. And, of course, the discussion of the weak. Ah, Kevin Cash, the Tampa manager, pulling Blake smell Blake Snell, Tampa Cy Young Award winning pitcher after he struck out nine after just 5.5 innings because of analytics. Tampa lost with almost the next pitch as this decision become emblematic of these over analysed times. Well, absolutely. But I had a revelation during this world serious guy and I think I've always known it, but it it wasn't crystallized until watching this. I don't watch baseball or I don't watch sports for wins and losses. I watch sports for competition. And this this thing they did not let Blake smell compete. And this happened at a time. When look at who we lost during this baseball season where you've lost the great picture, Whitey Ford, you lost the great competitor, Bob Gibson. And these players, they're legends come from competition, and if you're not going to let a player compete, what is the purpose of being a Cy Young Award winner? You're not even going to be allowed to have these classic championship moments. If they pull you out of the game. This is why we watch in baseball. At least the Tampa Bay Rays took that away from us. Howard Bryant of ESPN Well said, Thanks so much. Thank you.

"Then let's make sure justice healthy as well. The only reaction I wanted to see in that final out is I wanted to see Clayton Kershaw NHS reaction and I don't know I didn't know if it'd be a big smile I love Mukhi smile. But when I saw Clayton, it was if he just went. And then pointed up to the sky and it was like, okay. Now I can everybody can get on with their lives. They don't have to talk about my legacy or any of this other stuff I was happy for him that. Now, we can allow him to just be Clayton Kershaw again what did you think? I love that DP and I'm telling you you rewind a year ago and there's a Texas chain, a phone call that Clayton and I both had after we lost the nationals and. You know I can't even I I have my own world but with what he has has had to deal with the last five years. That's the thing that you don't want to leave your house and everywhere you go in everywhere around you people are saying that certain thing about you and you feel it, you know it and so that's why I thought about my father first and. then. Dave Roberts manager of the La Dodgers look I, appreciate him coming on because he knew I was going to ask the Justin Turner questioned and he understands the severity of it how it looks for Major League Baseball. And what role the dodgers played. And from what I'm told that Justin, Turner probably was will not be suspended. But it that my source said that the dodgers were probably going to be fine. Justin. Turner was going to be fine. That's what I was told I think two days ago. And and I understand that we don't even know Justin Turner is going to be with the dodgers next year but. I still think baseball should investigate baseball in you know where he was and should he have been sent back to a hotel? The fact that he was adamant that he wanted to go back out there and celebrate with his teammates and I get that. You know he may not be with this team he wanted to celebrate with his team but that doesn't mean that we can overlook a selfish. Decision here. "To the clippers. I mean look if you're John Rondo and you have to championships one for the Lakers one from the Celtics and the clippers like here's the bag. You'RE GONNA. Say No. I'm not going to say he's going to say no to the bag but in I've known to a long time since he was a rookie. And, I kind of know a little bit how his mind works and there are many aspects of joining the clippers that Sunni pre intrigues him like testing nece- can his skill set and his ability and his basketball IQ turned the clippers into winners I can see him being fascinated by that. I don't necessarily see him walking away from a Winnie franchise either. only because of money I don't see that happening I just want to say that I underestimated how important Rondo was going to be. I also didn't know that he was going to be able to come back from surgery missed the games before the playoffs in the bubble, and then work his way back into the rotation being shaped be on the same page with everybody I severely underestimated the role that Rondo was gonNA play but I also think that Rondo you know him I don't but does he think he's going to go to the clippers go? Hey with what they've got I'm the missing ingredient. So I'm not so sure that's the case he likes challenges he likes challenges and that would be a challenge I just don't think that he will walk away from a winning formula just to challenge himself in this way. All right l Z. Those are the things you need to know. But really what we've been talking about today has been the dodgers the the the day after the U Fauria of the dodgers winning the world series. My favorite part was after the. Dave Roberts took his mask off on the stage and said very emotionally. This is our year. This is our year and when Dave Roberts and the dodgers won the world series. He did the exact same thing I told you. This was our year. Here is the manager of the World Series La dodgers the world champions Dave Roberts on seventeen fan with. "I'm surprised that they did what they did. I feel like. One Guy. Are You surprised baseball. Does a horrible job of managing this PR in a right way. Horrible Job Baseball does a PISS poor job of making sure that the players and the owners and the Commissioner on the same page when it talks about protecting the business of baseball. Baseball is a sport that tried to tell us nobody was on steroids and when they finally couldn't lied to us anymore just said I can't believe this. They weren't supply the needles. So I mean like baseball has a long history of not giddy these conversations right? If I were running baseball, they would have been playing on the fourth of July. American pie everywhere, baseball is back. We would have had a bubble. We would have done the bubble and Phoenix we would have done the bubble perhaps in Florida and that would have been that in July but baseball wants to do things differently. There's technology. Scotty you know this, but they don't Wanna use it until they have to. They much get the call wrong because that's tradition as opposed to go. Oh, it's actually two thousand and twenty. We should probably use some of this stuff to make sure we get it. Right? But. That's baseball. I just thought I like this whole thing is such a mess and I, feel like today like the euphoria that dodger fans are feeling, wow, we just won the world series. It's been thirty two years redemption for Kershaw and people are going to get off of Dave Roberts back and what a team going into the future and all this young talent. You know look at what movie added to this team and world series euphoria everywhere people on the streets, downtown cars doing donuts and blowing up through fireworks and everybody's so consumed with firework shows I I never understand L. you'll have to explain it to me. Does, everybody have fireworks in their closet at their house like, Hey, I got a supply right here because I just never know when all of a sudden wanted to be fourth of July. I The fireworks after these Games after championships are wanted cracks me up every time I see news helicopters flying up and down showing these fourth of July fireworks shows. So I'm fireworks. So do I I love it but you have a lot. You have a lot in your house, a data SOM- but I don't have any now. I mean, I don't have any. I don't have a closet filled with fire. I do not have a closet full of fireworks, but I certainly was outside enjoying all of them. Absolutely Friday a little too late into the night but I'll tell there. Because it was, it was magical man it was fantastic. We were on a text exchange and in a horrid and I were talking about how we were crying in trevor's Rogers. This was the eighth any and travers was like you get you're ish together. This job is not done stay focus and I was like I, can't I'm sorry motion right now result goes. Listen, that's why I'm saying crazy year like twenty twenty with Kovic and everything that's happened to have two championships in the same year. Let alone both of them happening in the same month. Amazing I with L Z granderson. This is Scott, Kaplan Scott Kaplan filling in today for George. Sodano. WHAT IS GOING ON EVERYBODY WITH L Z GRANDERSON A guy. Yeah. Let this for a second turn up girl woo where're you calm in front of him? So. If you're just getting with us, we were talking earlier today about nineteen eighty where were you in nineteen, Eighty, eight when both the Lakers and the dodgers won their respective championships. By the way, we'll ask Dave Roberts where he was in hundred eighty eight 'cause L Z Dave Roberts, manager of the world series champion dodgers Dave Roberts coming up at the top of the hour. Yes. Sir, really looking forward to it you know. Obviously. There are so many people to be happy for Kershaw's on a lot of people's minds You know are obviously we're happy for Julio because he's been a longtime come in and he showed up in the biggest ways but I got a lot of love for Dave man because he goes through a lot from fans. We fall short a lot. So he deserved walk out with his chest puffed up because he did not fall short this time. I wonder where he was one, thousand, nine, hundred, Eighty, eight, I bet you he was in like you said, you were in high school. He was probably in the same and we just heard the theme from a different world. You know back then one, thousand, nine, hundred, eight, the biggest TV show like the biggest star going was bill cosby and he was like America's father at the. Time and then wasn't a different world. The show that that is what the cosby show turned into and the kids went off to college will get a different world was a spin off from Lisa Bnei. Who has the second oldest daughter Yeah and then she was uncertain Mona booted from the show for doing the Angel Heart Movie Will Ward Oh my God the Angel Heart. Movie. because. Oh Man. Cosby said Bill Cosby said. They'll. Be? Saying. That movie sent the wrong message. So he kicked Lisa bone after so because he didn't want that smut to interfere with the purity of his productions. A I thought about. It was nineteen eighty-eight when the when the dodgers in the Lakers won the championship it's thirty two years. Later, what was going on back in eighty eight? We started looking this stuff up and I went oh, my God bill cosby was. America's Dad I was growing up. Saturday mornings with fat Albert. As my cartoon you know and Bill Cosby was was America's Dad and Lisa Bonet. Oh my God that movie you just brought up, it was angel heart was the name. Oh. Dude Yeah. Yeah I'm not saying building to have a point is just somebody else price have made it. Right what we know now what we thought then yeah, exactly. Right. If you know the word hypocrite me, you know what we're talking about. Is that your cosby is the best I can do on the list. I knew it I. Knew It. So. Dave. Roberts coming up. You say you're happy for Dave. I am to Dave Roberts has just always been to me. A normal guy. He was a guy who you know high school football star in north, county San, Diego walked on to play Baseball Ucla and there's a whole story that goes along with where he was planning on playing football didn't work out deciding to go to ucla a having a great career. You know who he became in Boston on one stolen base coming back to his home town and playing for the padres. Coaching for the padres and then getting a when the padres fired their manager at the time they had him manage one game and then they never gave him so much as a courtesy interview like you played here you're from here you've coached on our staff you've been with organization not even so much as a courtesy interview, and then he gets to come to the dodgers and and gets to walk into a clubhouse that has that talent and he looks upstairs and goes they've got this philosophy in a great spot and finally you know he's going to get that ring and so I'm happy for the Guy, you know L Z when My son was young and Dave Son was young. They were playing little league get about the same time and I would call and say I'm GONNA come over I. Guess I would maybe ask rather than impose hit a batting cage in his backyard. He'd be back there with the kids my son, his son just working on BP you know and I was like this is the greatest thing ever that I've got a friend WHO's a major league ball player who's who's also a little league get who let's my kid come over and and hit the just angel of a guy could not be happier for two that is an amazing story. Is Your son remember all that Oh remembers all has like Dave Roberts signed baseballs and he's one of his favourite guys. He should get a tattoo. Of Dave. is, that too aggressive. Maybe only maybe. From the Paul's in your voice, you don't necessarily approve gesture. I used to try and do bill cosby also, but I used to try and do like Eddie Murphy Doing Bill Cosby you know Oh yeah. I. Would like to talk to you..

"Do you like the nickname cap. I've been I've gone by that and had people calling me that some. Little Kid man, but do you like it? Yeah. Yeah. I. Like it I. You'll get a kick out of this. It was probably I dunno maybe. Five or six or seven years ago I was doing a Sunday night football game in Seattle on Westwood One and James Lofton James, the hall of Fame Wide Receiver, who I would always walk on the field with James Before Games as I do with Kurt Warner whoever the analyst is a walk on the field. So I can have some access to people that I might not know or or they might and I don't. So Anyway This is Colin Kaepernick with with the niners at the time and James Said Hey, Colin this cap cap Cap. Can we take a picture? So the three of us took like a Selfie on the field for game and anytime I post that picture people get so mad at me or other people are like, Hey, that's awesome. But it's like one of those things now where you just post a picture with Colin Kaepernick, I'm like look cap meets cap and people like take. That is some political message everybody's so uptight everybody is uptight but I get it i. mean you take picture certain people I'm going to get bent out of shape a little bit myself so. You know I, just saw but to. tweet. that. I just brought the Tigers right now he's saying that Aj hinch is the leading favorite to get the job to be the new manager. which in a lot of ways makes my life so much easier. Because I don't have to straddle alliances my love. Knocking just be pure dodger no inhale I'll rolling around with my Detroit Tiger t shirt on anymore if that dude is the manager. I'm not doing that. Yeah Yeah, this is why it's so interesting to me that that there's so much venom out there. It seems for this Justin Turner situation when I say Venom I don't mean from dodger fans obviously I think it's just it's just a national story where people are taking all their shots Adam about how selfish she is. I think to myself did baseball really DO ANYTHING TO THE HOUSTON ASTROS? So they fired the manager in the general manager big deal. You know the the astros a slap on the wrist and people are saying what's going to happen to Justin Turner should be suspended for twenty five games. Should he be fine? The dodgers be fine I know here at all. Are you people out of your mind? Fining or suspending a guy for celebrating his teammates now. I understand that. You know he was selfish. Any Bro Protocols I get all of that. But in hierarchy of priorities for baseball not society. But. For Baseball. Are. You GonNa punish the dodgers twice. 'cause remember Joe Kelley and the Nice Swing beep. Are you gonNA punish the dodgers twice and still not properly punished Houston Astros once for doing something that I think in most reasonable fan steak is way more. Agree Gis. Given the context way more grievous, completely undermining the sanctity of the game, the integrity of the game. Chidi in the world series with no punishment. But YOU'RE GONNA come down heavy on JT celebrating winning the right way. The way you came down on Joe Kelley because he may or may not permits you the ball that way? May or may not I don't know let me tell you There's so much more blame to go around if you're looking to place blame then just Justin Turner you know I don't know if you where you were l z when you heard the news. So here's me I'm watching the game game ends I'm watching the Fox post game and Kevin Burkhardt says, Hey, we've got a breaking news story Justin Turner was actually removed from the game because he's got a positive test at that exact moment my brain went like this Oh no poor guy. He. They'RE GONNA win the world series. He's not going to be there to celebrate with his teammates, what a terrible tragic story for him and then he's out there on the field. My mind was okay. So they pull them off the field. Hey, man you gotta come off the field turns out you got a positive test. Here's what's going to happen. We're GONNA put you in a bubble. Okay. We're GONNA take you in a van and we're gonNA transport you to. A hospital and you're going to have to be all by yourself, and that's what I was thinking was going to happen and there he is out on the field and I hear people say things like nothing could stop him. There was nobody who could stop him and I said Oh really because I would think that it's a game. There's thousands of people there. They've got security. They've got cops around me if they really really wanted to stop them, they could have so. To me. The players seem to want out there. Nobody's families were running in the opposite direction. Oh, here comes Justin Turner don't WanNa next him. Andrew Friedman's right next to them. Dave. Roberts who's coming is GONNA. Join us at the top of the five o'clock hour. Right? He he's sitting right next to him. It seemed to me like everybody was like, let's we want him here. So this notion of one guy. So selfish to me it's like he went out there to celebrate they all wanted him there. Celebrate they all assumed well, if we we've been around and we've been shower with the guy and come on and so this is they showed near him not with him. Go ahead I get your point. Well, you understand what? Maybe, there's new covid policies how guy shower. But I just feel like I feel like one guy is getting beaten up over something that I think many of us. I would've done the same thing. Well. I. Certainly would have done. The same thing I'm not gonNA speak for all our listeners, but I would run out there and also would have been selfish. I'm not trying to say that JT wasn't selfish. It was selfish because he didn't want to be left out of what was happening because to your point. Just as no one says, Hey, you know get away from me you got the cooties. The also wasn't people as far as can sale saying, I'm not taking a picture. Let's JT. Is there? No they were caught up in world series euphoria and it was just a whole bunch of celebrating and I don't have a problem with that aspect of it only because he had already basically been around all those guys all game long without his mask. Anyway. So it wasn't something new being introduced necessarily by him coming back to the field as much as we had new information, and so we looked at in feel differently but that didn't change the fact that he'd already spent hours with those guys already I. Feel like. Major. League. Baseball is scapegoating one guy the their press release saying you know he did this he went out there. He broke the protocols I'm like, wait a second you guys are the ones that gave a test when the day before the test was inconclusive then you give a test and then he dresses he's in uniform. He's in the game and you find out this late into the game listen if I were running pr for Major, League Baseball like, okay. Nobody saying anything no, let the game end nobody say a word and let's get to the end of his game and then we'll figure it out..

"As far as recency I really felt good about Pedro. Coming in that spot up a couple or up a run or whatever it was. I just wanted to go in there and throw a change up a fastball and hit a home, run it. Just it'd be the three home but I felt good about that I wanted to get back out there and you know. So I felt good about that just didn't work out something I That I didn't know you know what I didn't know how Dustin was gonNA respond I didn't know. Be Spun because if you look at those guys in the ES, they didn't really pitch. Well, I. Think they were over amped and That's just my opinion and so it had a good conversation with both those guys and to see them pits the way they did in the world series industrial gave obviously a big inning and victor really came up big for us. So you kind of and you bet on the guys but you really don't know until you know. Dave Roberts the world series champion manager of the L. A. Dodgers on seventy SPN WITH L Z granderson and Scott. CAPLAN. Dave. Would you just give us your thought on because this is an observer watching. So tell me you know insider living. Bets Change. With this team versus teams of years past, I mean, these teams were there they were in the world series. I'm not saying one guy was all the difference but it seemed to me like he added an energy maybe looseness of fun a swag. He added something to this roster that maybe it hadn't had. What do you say? Yeah I I think all of the above I think on the surface as a fan You can look at the kind of energy the enthusiasm, the focus the attention to detail that that mookie brings.
MLB investigating after Justin Turner ‘refused to comply’ with officials during Los Angeles Dodgers celebration
"To talk about. Ah, what happened to Justin Turner? He was pulled in the eighth inning of the game last night because of a positive Covad test. What did the Dodgers know? And when did they know it? Yeah, So it's It's a a interesting situation. The way that is kind of shaken out is the players were getting tested daily while they were in the postseason bubble. In Turner's test on Monday, producing inconclusive result, which MLB was alerted to during Game six. And so they asked the lab in Utah to expedite The test results on the sample he provided Tuesday. And that is the one that then came back positive as soon as they will be found out. They relate it to Andrew Friedman of the Dodgersfront office, who then pass the message along to Dave Roberts. That You know? Hey, Justin Turner has to come out of this game right away. And it's the exact timing isn't clear. You know, they weren't gonna necessarily stop The game. If there was, you know, one or two outs in the seventh inning, but obviously we saw you know when the ending kind of turned over for the start of the eighth, he was replaced by Edwin Rios. We're getting a statement today but by major league baseball, by the way, this is according to the times that they are investigating. Now, Turner Um MLB, saying that that he quote emphatically refused to comply. When league security raise the matter to him about returning to the field to celebrate. We saw pictures of him. We saw him in a mask, and then we saw him without a mask. We saw him with his wife and the trophy. So the investigation, I guess is beginning in Major League baseball. We've seen that there have been no additional positive tests have come back among Dodgers or raise players. More testing is scheduled For today. And in the coming days.
World Series Game 6: Rays decision to pull Blake Snell immediately backfires
"Kevin cash taking up. Blake, Snell in the sixth inning last night with one and one out and a one nothing lead snow had been brilliant to that point no runs no walks nine strikeouts. The move backfired immediately the dodgers got two quick runs off Nick Anderson added another later in the game on a home run by Mookie Betts and won the world series. We'll bond. Can you defend what cash did? No And I don't WanNa hear anybody else tried defended either because some things are just indefensible and this is one of them Tony I I'm offended by what I saw last night just somebody who grew up on baseball whose I love and sport was baseball played baseball pitch and just offensive. So numbers are so important to you Kevin cash that you can't use your eyes which is supposed to be professionally trained and steeled, and you've been benched coach and manager then all these days and you don't know when you need to leave the guy alone you. WanNa, take the game away from the players take the game away from a starting pitcher whose lights out who the other team is. Now, not afraid of going Oh my God is shaking their heads and you don't have the baseball since in you to leave him alone and ride your good fortune to have this guy going this. Well, totally I was in contact via text with a couple of former recent former notable major league baseball players, and they were as startled about this development as I was and I just couldn't. No. There's no defending it. Yeah I'M GONNA. Give it a shot at defending human I'm going to preface it by saying if we don't learn from history, we're always going to be doomed to repeat it Kevin. Cash. Has Seen Blake Snell. He has managed Blake Snell for years. Now he's seen them all year. He hasn't gone through the sixth all year I'm going to read from my notes Ziara in these playoffs in the first four innings where he's been great as one point three, five from then on it's twelve point five, six last week Snell no hit the dodgers for four and two thirds and Then, in rapid order walk homer walk single and cash has seen all of this the last guy up before he gave him, the Hook was the ninth patron, the order, and he hit a rope to center field, and now at this point you've got bets and you've got SEGER coming up for a third time. The mistake isn't Yanking Snell to me the mistake is putting in Anderson Innocence the wrong guy in the regular season he's lights out but in the playoffs is over five and Mike and his last six appearances, he's allowed to run I I I understand that Kevin? Is. An. Easy target and a totally legitimate target. I just think in this case, he had seen Snell all year and the hulk wasn't as bad as what he did home. You're not playing lifetime achievement. You're playing the damn game tonight right? You is your sense of everything. This is your livelihood I don't care what he did last week. This guy has given up one hard hit ball maybe a second heart. It Ball. Alright. So yes, you got what you're saying about bringing a guy in who's been lit up lately I don't WanNa go that far I don't care who he had going warmed up. You have got a guy on the mound that has the other people in the other Doug. If you're a manager the time we know you're watching them to and they are shaking their heads when they walk back to. The dugout he has stymied them. If you're not smart if all you're doing is playing probability Tony, then go work at the win in Vegas I don't WanNa see you near a baseball diamond. So let me go back into this for a second because it's something we'll have to live with if he never wins forever in the way that great little does the way the Darryl bevill does. Making these what appear to be bonehead calls but I would tell you Dave Roberts said the same thing with Clayton Kershaw he let him pitched to two batters in the sixth inning whenever it was and he knew that Ziara after a certain point was bad and he took them out to protect him and to make sure the dodgers won that game I think managers do this I don't. You know I'm not crazy about analytics I don't WanNa take an anti intellectual viewpoint here that I think that certain people it's absurd managers rely too much on numbers and not enough on you but I think the mistake was who he put in not what we took out. One of the guys I was texting with last night we might be said half the front office is in baseball would have done this and it's not just a managers front office last night was bad night for Baseball Tony. You could say baseball's we at five. We know better than somebody even most cases who's twenty five years old. It's a sad night for baseball that a guy pitching a masterpiece. What are you take? You defendant Kevin Casting Colfax or Gibson? That's the kind of performance. This guy was spinning last night and he took them out and it's a sad night. It's a sad night for baseball I don't care how anybody who wants to defend it or painted even Kevin cast I don't care what he has to say.
Los Angeles Dodgers win World Series for first title since 1988
"Year, the city of Angels is celebrating. Dave Roberts, 20 Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series title since 1988 beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3 to 1 last night. Dodger third baseman Justin Turner had to be removed mid game after testing positive for covert 19. Turner is the first player to test positive this postseason. But he says he feels fine and he was seen celebrating on the field after the game. And you know, tiny. My first memory of baseball was that 1988 Siri's, with Kirk Gibson, famously pumping his fists around the bases. So it has been a while for Dodger fans. Yes, and from my house last night in so Cal, All you could see was fireworks in the sky as Angelenos celebrated this long awaited victory.
Los Angeles Dodgers' Justin Turner pulled mid-game during World Series win after positive Covid-19 test
"Win three one, win the series and six, but being completely overshadowed one of the grandest franchises in sports winning the World Series Championship after three decade plus drought is being overshadowed by one player having to leave the game doing a positive corona virus tests and that is just turner but that is also so twenty twenty Jeff Passan is with us this morning Jeff have little more details on what went on that allowed Turner to be on the field for the post game celebration. Hasn't been nothing really allowed him to be on the field. He just chose to be field and nobody was going to drag off after he won the world series. He essentially said I'm going out there and nothing's GonNa stop me I want to pose with the trophy I wanna be with my teammates I want to choose celebrate like somebody WHO's won the world series for the first time and nothing was gonNA stop him and the fallout from that we're GONNA see over the next couple of days hopefully there. Are No other positive corona virus tests on the Los Angeles dodgers. But you know that all remains to be seen as does how they're going to get back to Los Angeles. When they're going to go back, there are a lot of questions still jeff. I don't put this on Justin Turner nor do I put this on the dodgers but how big of an indictment is this on the MLB? They're the ones that pulled him from the game in a there's the one that told him he needs to quarantine. When we see these Leagues Have Championship Games. There are people in the League office who were their security from league offices are there where where is the MLB and all this? Well I think the security tried to stop him from going on there but he you know this is a guy who's covert positive. So is security going to put their hands on him or are they GONNA to? Contract the virus themselves probably not, but they they didn't stop it from going out there and they did remove them and I. Think Rob Manfred got some questions answer about how that happened about what protocols were in place and why they weren't followed. Let me ask you this Jeff Obviously La in second biggest market for Major, League baseball outside of New York in the Yankees Major League Baseball don't want the headline story to be about covert the day after the second biggest market had just won the championship. Course not but I think regardless of weather. Justin Turner went onto the field or not it was going to be pretty interesting part of the story I. Think the fact that he did go back out there makes it a much bigger story now because there are questions, why did he go back out there? How did he go back out there? Who allowed him back out there? How did they not stop it? Jeff what are what are you hearing around the league this early morning about his teammates embracing the fact that he was able to join them for big celebration. GonNa go on up checks message here that I got from general manager. It's A super spreader event on live. TV. Welcome to twenty twenty. And I'M GONNA PULL UP A. Dm I got from an active player isn't here. Now it's nice, but essentially it's What the F. is going on. And that's kind of a thought around baseball and yet. You guys were players let let's put you in that same situation you gotten cut. Seven years ago, and this organization gave you a chance you blossom into an all-star to guy who gets MVP vote someone who's made fifty million dollars somebody who's a leader in the clubhouse and is seen as one of the voices and wants to celebrate this thing that he has worked so hard to celebrate. Would you have gone back out there As a teammate I'm okay with it I don't know if it was me dead had tested positive. I. Don't know because it would had to have happened in the moment and I would have probably responded reacted to my teammates, my coaches in people around me if they was embracing situation most likely I would have joined. But if Jay Wheel for instance is tested positive and he's my teammate I'm. Come on man we me. Yeah this is so subjective Jeff because I'm different I would have wanted to celebrate with my teammates. I just would've wore masks I would have done it differently but. turnage Justin Justin Turner did wear a mask out originally, but there were a couple of instances where cameras got him. He was talking to his wife taking pictures with her gave her a kiss mask was off and he was sitting down on the field for the team picture. To his left was the championship trophy to his right was Dave Roberts the dodgers manager who ten years ago was diagnosed with Hodgkin. Lymphoma. So He's a cancer survivor. He's the person who has a pre existing condition and Justin Turner daybreak spoke for mascots at that point now Dave Roberts told Fox later on I think it was something to the effect that I didn't touch him. but you know he was he was in the same vicinity wasn't for fifteen minutes wasn't close contact defined by CDC but the optics on it as Andrew Freedom and the president of baseball operations says not good.
Los Angeles Erupts As Dodgers Win First World Series Championship In 32 Years
"I WANNA zoom out here now on the dodgers as this franchise because this was their first championship in thirty two years and I was watching Dave Roberts and putting aside all of the Cova. Complications it was hard not to feel something for that guy and it was hard to feel something for this organization N. This fan base and this city. So what did you make of the dodgers finally getting over? This. Particular Hump, you know I think that Dave Roberts has been a guy who at times has been rightly maligned for his decision making but the decision making that will stick with me from this postseason has to do with two pitchers Clayton Kershaw in Julio. Arenas Dave Roberts twenty four hours before he won a world series championship got booed by a crowd that was almost entirely dodger fans at a neutral site stadium. It was a really weird thing. This guy who's got all these supposed demons and October's getting a standing ovation coming off the field. For for people who think he should have stayed in the game it was just a very bizarro situation and you know what I think Dave? Roberts. made the right move there. And people are always going to say process over outcome process over outcome raised died on that mantra and. Dave Roberts lived on it. He ended up going with Julio Arias for the last three innings of the clincher in the S. In the last three innings of the clincher in the world series he had Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen, his two rocks out in the bullpen ready and willing to go and he said now I'm a stick with a kid who's pitching. He stuck with the guy who looked good and that is one thing that Kevin cash did not do. And there's an argument to be made. That they lost the world series because of that. And then you look at Julio. Maria Standing There Austin Barnes catching that call third strike in grabbing the ball with his right hand and stuffing in his back pocket. That's history in his back pocket right there and the celebration that came afterward and all of the madness and weirdness and oddity of two thousand twenty being wrapped up in such a perfect though.
Justin Turner celebrates Dodgers' World Series-clinching win on field despite mid-game positive COVID-19 test
"Jeff Passan you are somewhere in Arlington Texas right now it is one thirty eight am eastern time. So where exactly are you and I guess what's the last hour of your life been like? I don't know where I am right now Jeff. Passan covers baseball for ESPN and has been unbanned from this podcast after planting the Randy Arosa Raina Song in all of our brains last week. I'm I'm living in I'm living in Corona virus hell right now because I- Pablo I've been covering baseball for seventeen years now I have seen the Boston Red Sox win their first world series eighty, six I've seen the Chicago cubs win their first world series in one, hundred, eight years and I'm not sure that I've seen anything is crazy as what happened after the Los Angeles dodgers won their first world series in thirty two years tonight I mean let's get right into this then because what was the weirdest baseball season ever has ended with the weirdest world series after ever say and there's a great game to dissect here but. It's really hard to bury the lead of Justin, Turner the dodgers star Third Baseman getting pulled some time after his third at bat in that game because he had apparently tested positive for covert, and then a bunch of other stuff happened Jeff and that's where you come in. So what the Hell happened I was scrambling as all of this was going on Pablo because Fox, right after the dodgers won the world series announce on their broadcast that Justin Turner had tested positive for Covid nineteen but we started this show is some breaking news after the completion the game tonight we are informed by Major League baseball that Justin Turner received a positive Cova test. That's why he was removed from the game. We have no other details at this time I get the word that, yes, he had tested positive and the way that the story was told to me was that Major League baseball does one corona virus tests per day four players who were in the bubble and for family members and everybody else. That test from Monday got SENT TO THEIR LAB IN UTAH. The tests were run and they came back late that and Turner's tests was the only one that was inconclusive and as the inconclusive result for Justin, Turner had come back right around that same time the tests from today that had been taken had arrived in Utah. Now, they were getting ready to spin the sample of Justin, Turner from Monday to to retest it and see if there were. Any different results, but they said, forget that test, the one that came in today the results came back in about two hours around the seventh inning at which point a positive had been confirmed and immediately Major League Baseball was informed of this called. The Los Angeles dodgers. It was fed into the dugout and Justin Turner was pulled from the game and told to isolate. Justin Turner. Did Not isolate and that's and that's that's the part Pablo that I think so many people are going to remember from this. The very odd seen on the field where Justin Turner at one point is taking a team picture with the Los Angeles dodgers and he's sitting next to Dave Roberts his manager who also was not wearing a mask can who is a cancer survivor? After he had tested positive for Covid nineteen I, think people out in the world saw that and said what in God's name is going on here. I was one of those people out in the world in my living room like so many others in their living rooms wondering wait a minute. This is a very sophisticated game with many protocols. How did Justin Turner get cleared to be out on the field doing all the things you just mentioned? Justin Turner. Did Not get cleared Justin Turner just wanted to go celebrate with his friends with his teammates with his wife who I saw a picture of him kissing on the field and with all of the people who he won this championship with I had a GM text me as this was going on. And he said, is there a super spreader event going on at the World Series Right now? And it's it's not an unreasonable question to ask now Justin Turner did say in a tweet that he's not feeling any symptoms that he's doing. Alright. So bats great to hear, but it's not like. This is the Los Angeles dodgers team Pablo that hasn't had issues with covid Nineteen
"dave roberts" Discussed on Afternoons with Marcellus & Kelvin
"I convinced John Ireland that Walker Bueller should be the guy that Dave Roberts should reverse course and should've thought this through more. Why do you believe that Tony Gone Selene is the right man today. because. I like the idea of one. making sure that your gun. Walker Bugler is in his prime conditioning as much as possible. in a must win situation if we were to get there. If we're if, we're to get there. I WANNA. Make sure that our ASE has its rest. That is blisters won't be an issue that he is fired up to go with one win to go if it gets there. When I don't want to have happen. Is that we go into a gain six with a walker builder, a little less than optimal, and if things don't turn on the way, we got Tony Gossip against southern. WHO If given my choice, I would much rather go with the way that day then laid it out, and that organization has decided as opposed to you know what you're suggesting, which isn't a bad suggestions as George is not bad. It's just from my perspective. The last time you had bullpen game I remember be up. Still almost won that game. And if our bats show up, this is all anyway. I bought a new outfit. got a brand new t shirt kept brand new pants brand new hat. Like I'm I'm going to be squeaky clean. crispy. We're GONNA take care of it tonight. Tonight. Yeah so I I. Don't I hope that's the case and I agree with you that if the if they come to hit none of it matters anyway and maybe gunman does revert back to the guy he was during the regular season when he was incredible. But during the postseason, like for I believe he pitched forty five innings and is your ray was under a two and a half and he had a stretch I think of twenty-something scoreless innings at one point he was incredible but he has not been that guy during the postseason in that. That makes me a little fearful. I, gotTa be honest with you. I mean listen. There's no question that regardless of sports, the postseason is just more difficult. There's no question about it. And that they're rolling out their best pitcher I, get all of quite Blake's now is their best pitcher. Yes. He's their best pitcher. I'd get all of that but I do believe we'd say smell out the game we not. Yes we did. We I mean, chase them up the game. Didn't they win that game? They won the game, but we started to beat him up and he was out before six. I mean I think most teams nowadays though they're doing the out your outlook no no no I mean he he wasn't taking because that was the plan we beat them out. Scored two runs on them? Yeah. In foreign two-thirds. Yeah. So I mean. strikeouts though he was pretty good. No no, he was. He was pretty good lights out. He was actually going with a no hitter into the fifth inning. Yeah. He by the way he had never he hasn't pitched just. So people know he has not pitched more than five in two thirds as entire postseason. Yeah. We got this. We got this job. Your jaw fireworks. Ready we go. Let's go to the phones hosie people want to Chime in on this conversation Dean is in Norwalk what's up Dean? How you guys doing today I'm finally got in and I just had a comment couple of comment. Early on, you're talking about Kenley Jansen, my opinion if do not put Kenley Jansen in the game unless you have at least four, one league because he is going to give up the long ball I like. Kinley. But for the last couple of years, he has gone down and my mets thing is why not go with Bueller this happened to us in game two. Okay. Why not go with newer they're going with their aides you have to go for the kill tonight Yup do not hold dealer to say well, just in case we go to a seven game we don't. Want to think about that. Yes. The dodgers did make a little running game too. But if you would have you in the game, we won that game because he would have shut their players. Now that's all. That's all I have to say I just I don't understand it. Why not go with were tonight Yup. Dean. Thank you so much obviously I agree with you. I'm with meals e I just think I listen I. You know me I I liked when it comes to my sports I, like to play aggressive. Okay. I like the coaches that go on fourth down Those things to me being aggressive to me. I. Like that being rewarded and I just think when you look at Walker Buehler's performance this postseason, the names of the pitchers who have outperformed him. and. There's only look you know three or four or all not just hall of famers but like all time greats okay. In regards to one postseason stretch like this kid is the best player on this team not named Buki Bets Right now. I mean listen. I think that we all agree the Walker Bueller is as. We all feel as if when he's the amount that it gives us our best chance to win. Are we in agreement with that. Yes. So, if we find ourselves in gained sudden, how do you feel about Walker Bueller on the mound..
Dodgers 1 win from title after 32 years and more than $3.6B
"It's easy to let your mind wander when your team is one win away from a World Series championship especially when the team hasn't won one since nineteen eighty eight Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was trying to keep that notion out of his mind as he prepared his team yesterday for game six against the rays when it does enter I quickly dismissed it and I'm kind of just it is human nature but I I just really don't let my mind go there Roberts is using Tony Gosselin to star game six tonight against ray's hurler Blake Snell Gosselin lasted just an inning and a third in game two against now but Robert says he's willing to stay with them a lot longer this time I'm Dave Ferrie
The Latest: Kershaw, Dodgers take Game 1 over Rays
"Vast fox sports radio networking glad you have chosen to spend A couple minutes with us and there is no debate. There is no debate where we begin this night, a radio the fall classic surfing the Blue Wave Cowabunga Dod's the Fall Classic, starting in a neutral site. Kind of on Tuesday night with Joe Buck every night, you get ajob of game and John Smalls calling the game on Fox. Did you watch? Maybe not will see that I don't imagine the ratings will be very good for this Thegame was lopsided in there's one team that has a fan base and another one that doesn't a national fan base for the Dodgers. Put on a pyrotechnics show. It was like the Fourth of July. Boom Bang Bam! The Dodger offense When Cody Bellenger Mookie Betts hit homeruns Clayton Kershaw mowing down Tampa haters like it was an April started Dodger Stadium on by the time The damage he'd done. Ella ended up spit roasting the raise 8 to 3 and Game one of the 2020 World Series for the Dodgers Get a leg up on the best of seven series now three wings away. From their first championship as a franchise since 1988 When Ronald Reagan was the president, Tommy Lasorda was waddling in the dugout and Kurt Gibson got wanted bat and hit a home run and is at all time legend because of that, as a Dodger, So let us discuss the question. What are your big takeaways? From Game one of the World Series, a domination situation for the Dodgers. So I've got the white whale hand grenades and Smurfs and we will tie all these things together. Now we talk about the World Series. Game one. You start with us. Accounts on Lee is just one game. It doesn't matter that much in the big picture. It's only one game. However. I'm going to disagree with that statement because the feeling that one gets watching Game one of the World Series from the Dodgers side of things. It's like hitting a two team parlay. It doesn't seem like a one win situation. Night, so don't undersell the importance of a game one win for Los Angeles and I'll tell you why. Because the Dodgers winning a Clayton Kershaw playoffs start As easy as a B C. 123. Is not something that happens very often, right. You feel like you dodged a bullet when you win a Kershaw game in the playoffs in a big play off game, Kershaw has been the dog with fleas in the postseason. And while many of my colleagues on television like to downplay Clayton Kershaw's missteps on radio, we don't do that We don't his World Series resume coming in. I would have him in the bread line. If that was his resume. What into an E? R. A of over five he had pitched in 26 2 3rd innings given up 16 earned runs. Over four starts in five games. But on this night, it reminded and voice in my head. It was Dick Stockton, who told me years ago stats tell you what has happened. They don't tell you what's going to happen. And that was a vintage regular season type of Kershaw performance. And you see that in a big play off game as often as you see a white whale swimming around the ocean, right? Clayton Kershaw got 38 swings. 19. Mrs. He had a whiff rate of 50%. Now the stat geeks tell us that that is the highest Of Clayton Kershaw's career, whether it be the postseason or the regular season that half the time it was S O matter, Miss. That is what's known as flexing your muscles, and it wasn't just Kershaw. Cody Bellenger, Mookie Betts. Max Muncy all had big days. The conga line kept moving. You keep pressure on your opponent 10 hits, they got seven walks. The Dodgers drew seven walks and, more importantly than that. They actually hit when they had runners in scoring position. They batted 3 57 on this day with runners in scoring position. They were five out of 14 follow the ways and is a key. You follow the wisdom often, American legend Will Rogers You never get a second chance to make a first impression. The Dodgers they made their first impression. Now you've got to back that up. You have backed that up in Game two in Game three, but you only played one game and the Dodgers the more talented team they didn't play down to their competition. They played like they were the superior opponent in this matchup. We certainly hope that continues were slightly biased on this now. Part B. If you would like to knit pick That's one of these. We get paid to do hear on the radio. Always to pick apart things in micro analyze. Dave Roberts fell back into some old analytical principles. We were hoping that his gut feeling managerial move. The other night would continue. It did not in this game, managing Clayton Kershaw. For Dave Roberts is like juggling hand grenades. One wrong move one wrong move and your head gets blown off. And I understand partially what Roberts is thinking. Because when I'm watching Clayton Kershaw, I'm thinking, OK, Here's where it all falls apart goes to hell right here, right. This is going to be the inning. It all goes to crap. In a playoff situation. But on this night Kershaw he was dealing He'd only thrown 78 pitches. Through six innings. And ah, very effective there. The Rays hitters were completely flummoxed against Kershaw as we gave you some of the numbers there of 50% with weight, and despite the Dodgers having a huge advantage there up eight tow one. They, Roberts Arbitrarily said. That's it. We're going to take you out of the game. I'd rather take you out of half inning. Too early, then a half inning too late. So that brought in Dillon Florio, who wasn't good and then and then Roberts panic because the Rays attempted the pin shit G may enjoy And so Roberts ran out of the dog and I got to make a change. I
No knocking Bellinger's homer celebration in World Series
"Rod Cody bellinger hit what amounted to be the game winning homer during game seven of the. And probably separated his shoulder. Later, when he was celebrating with his team manager Dave Roberts conceded bellinger's not one hundred percent. He could have issue swinging the bat with that bump shoulders. Here's the question is if foul or fair to say, the dodgers will be better off sent him bellinger to the bench during the series. That's foul to that is a foul. I mean, this guy's a game changer I mean the plays that he makes them the outfield and he's already ran into a couple of them in the playoffs they ran into a big wouldn't just the other day you gotTa have been there. My only question is what's wrong. With Enrica, Hernandez the guy that gave him at four on they need to sit him down. He's letting too many ways McCoy, balance your. Line of the dodgers as talented. But this was rookie of the year and you also was an MVP and another thing speaking from a professional standpoint as the hitting coach when you have a guy that has an injury like that to the shoulder he kind of slows everything down swing blue shorter he gets off tonight in my opinion he's up something special in their series that would be corey bellinger.
What to Expect From the Dodgers and Rays in World Series
"And the World Series Tonight Clayton Kershaw in game one will tell the rubber for keys dodgers against Tyler glass. Now at the brand new home gonNA turn him in the grass for sure. We'll see if that glass will shatter or maybe the Raizal. Ceiling and win their first world series. It'll be played at the brand new home of the Texas Rangers Globe. Life Field expect about twelve thousand fans or so in attendance, and as you know, it has been a tale of two different halves for Clayton Kershaw, a regular season is dominant. A dominant gets postseason has certainly been that way obviously most of the dodger defenders we'll tell you when you take on somebody in the postseason, the quality competition certainly ratchets up. Game. Tonight pre game coverage ESPN, radio seven, thirty eastern, and every single night that we have the world series every ball every strike pre-game radio seven, thirty, eastern. I just. In the world series is not very good because like five or something five point four, zero in the world series, which is not going to bring it down tonight though we'll see we'll see. The rays have some guys you've never heard of but by this time tomorrow, that's certainly may change including the great rookie randy arose arena. If you see him tonight, he is one of the greatest splashes onto the postseason seen we have seen in many years. All right. So put your dodger cap your cap on literally, and figuratively, what do you think in tonight? One of the biggest moments in the managerial career Dave Roberts who's been feeling the strain I think since day once we first of all, it's going to start with the. Pitching Right Kershaw has to come out and he has to deal and we have to back him up and support him. We're runs the last several outings for him. We really haven't done anything with our bats for whatever reason that's the struggling part of it. If you remember several days ago I had mark to share on our show. Yeah we have more share on our show in in question I asked him about the pressure of a pitcher in those innings you get to the fifth sixth inning and you're still battling in a one. To one situation, we've gotTA give him some room to play with and I think it starts with him on the mound. But also, what are bats the guys like Bellenger even though something maybe a little wrong with his shoulder you gotta hope that a guy like that comes through in J. T. and seger stays hot that way we can get some runs and now kershaw could relax at the mile it pitch like he's capable of pitching can appreciate the fact that even though the dodgers of the second highest payroll and the rays have the twenty eighth highest payroll. At Twenty, eight, million dollars highest she'd player. D. appreciate the fact that they they are. They're frugal when she talked about their payroll all the time. That's the first thing he go to talk about the raise the payroll. We're saving money over here. You can still compass a championship. Would you can. You gotta tip your cap to them as a former pro athlete that's played in a variety of organizations with a variety of different approaches. The fact that they're at this stage for the second time in franchise history utilizing the exact same plan. Let's spend less and win more. Plan works to raise and Andrew Freeman certainly put plan in place for them and they've taken over and they've done well with it. The dodgers aren't doing tell Andrew Friedman is the guy that's leading the dodgers essentially got the job because he put the in such great position in his tenure there from two thousand, six to two, thousand, fourteen, four playoff appearances, two division titles, and now he wants to do as much as he can to make sure he can squash that raised team he built and the culture he formed
Trent Grisham fans the flames of Dodgers-Padres rivalry after home run
"The dodgers manager Dave Roberts he complained that the padres didn't show Clayton Kershaw proper respect after hitting a big home run Trent Grisham hit the home run and he hit a home run in the sixth inning off Clayton Kershaw to tie the game. And he stared at down a little bit and. Dodgers Dave Roberts was not pleased. He said, I don't mind guys admiring a homer. Certainly, it's a big game big hit. Robert. Said after the game I really liked the player I just felt that to over kind of stay at home plate certainly against a guy like Clayton who's got the respect of everyone in the big leagues and what he's done in this game, I took exception to that because I think there's a certain respect that you give a guy like that if you homer against him. People I think then said, well, wait a minute the dodgers. Made. Member when they hit the home run off Madison Bumgarner didn't they turn it into a t shirt that they kind of. Sat there and. Admired their homerun. Kershaw himself had the right position. He I'm not gonNA worry about their team. Let him do what he wants.
Damian Lillard leaving NBA campus to have knee examined
"And Damian Lillard by the way, the news is that he's leaving the bubble to get his knee checked out. So that's the that's that's it for daily posted a picture on a on a plane today with his family seems to be very happy. To. Be. Right.
Two tropical systems could threaten Gulf Coast
"The Gulf of Mexico could see something next week. That hasn't happened since 1959 to tropical storms At the same time, tropical storms Laura and Marco projected to reach the Gulf coast Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. A lot could happen in the meantime, but at the National Hurricane Center storm specialist Dave Roberts says, the cognizant of what's happening with both of these systems because it just seems like there's going to be a large air of impacts in terms of the Gulf. "Are I think a game? Potentially better than the raiders. Nine nine and seven ten six. The raiders are more eight and eight nine and seven in my opinion so I'll give them five and eleven. If you really WanNa go I mean you're you are like that. Is the Raider boy coming out right there? That's all that is. I mean there is real hatred there. Eight seven seven seven ten. Espn if you want to hop aboard and get it on our NFL. Predictions eight seven seven seven seven three seven seven six. So there's that and then here's what else I got for you. So Ramona did a story today with Michelle Roberts of the NBA Players Association. She is the head of the Players Association. And here's the money. So basically she says Michelle Roberts that it is a non starter to do the bubble because of this because of the stringent strict rules of not being able to leave to go anywhere outside of their hotel that it's basically too strict going from the arena to the hotel and that's it and her response was what's next armed guards. However according to sources and Ramona's story teams believed that they would need local officials to allow gatherings of up to fifty people in practice again and gatherings of up to two hundred to play games again. Likely I don't practice facilities or Disney World in Orlando Florida. This could theoretically accommodate families and be seen in a semi as a semi bubble a compromise. Where players wouldn't necessarily be subjected to harsh social isolation or surveillance measures but until the national capacity for testing improves. Sources say the NBA will be disciplined in maintaining social distancing as facilities open so the NBA has drawn a line. Much like Clayton Kershaw and my trout. The difference is the NBA is in solidarity. Chris Paul has said. The family thing is a non-starter being away from their families so if the players are in solidarity in the NBA Unlike Major League Baseball where you have a lot of guys like yeah man. Whatever I gotta do to get paid. I'll do it so a schism in major league baseball less show in the NBA. They feel like they can negotiate the family part of this. So we'll get a tour guide. We'll get access so we can cut the lines and stuff so we'll be because again. I worked at universal and Disney. So Chris Patrick has worked as well so we kind of know the INS and outs of the park. So kind of you know. Kinda something fun to do. Ross is GonNa give away swag guy you know something. Jay Z and Justin about doing that as well. They were cool. 'cause I know chess. He's doing his own All in challenge so we kinda got three together so excited about it awesome again. The auction is going on for a couple of days so another actually starts today ends on May twenty fifth. So there you go you got some time to get in on that joy while I have you. I mean you've lived such an incredible life man. It's awesome like just to see everything you've been able to accomplish. It's a trip to watch I. I've been very blessed especially with me not being a very athletic innocence but knowing course about four but being able to go insane at a subway series that we within think back in the day to do the closing ceremonies of the Olympic. You know to go to go to Derby every year so on this year that you know because point till September is what they say but it was. You know my nineteen year going to the Kentucky Derby that we miss this year like did you bet on the virtual derby. At least no I didn't I would be upset. I decided basically it was great. But know that's crazy but yeah. I mean look you guys have been so. You're big sports fan. Has there ever been a moment where you've been at a sporting event where you're like? Oh my God. I can't believe this person knows who I am a guy every day you know. It's interesting to this certain times that I may not know the person either and they come like. Oh my gosh you know you're amazing and you're talking to you know somewhat of statute that. I didn't even know for that matter. I mean one one joke that my manager says all the time out. It's pretty frigging funny. I'll be years ago I think I believe Pittsburgh playing the Super Bowl and Rothlisburger was there and you at a party and I was like. Hey Bill you. He played but I wasn't paying attention to what party we were at and everything like. Oh so what are you here for? He's like well. I'm in the Super Bowl. Brain part of the whole thing is the celebrities like he's my dumb ass saying this in front of him and it was like. Oh Gosh so I definitely brushed up on a lot of people nowadays so that. That's a good thing about me but it's always again with those moments are going to all these different events pretty amazing to see you know. How is it doesn't matter if you're celebrity or everybody wants whatever that team to win? Whatever that you know especially with Derby that horse to win you know what I mean. It doesn't matter if you have five bucks a five million dollars. We're all together trying to trying to get these courses in one in the win that kind of thing now Joey fatone hanging out with us year and again make sure you check out his own challenge. Him Lands Passing Chris trip for three to Disneyworld and universal out. Orlando check it out. It's four a great 'cause with the all in challenge so let me ask you this. Then you grew up in New York I know that at least initially and then you move to Orlando when you were a teenager so like where are your sports allegiances people being from Brooklyn New York. People are always thinking it'd be more of Yankees jets as far as teams that concern. I'm more the Met. Giants fans met fan and a giant fan. Of course you can't forget the eighty six minutes and and that's kind of where my my love for baseball and stuff like that really started happening at that time back in the eighties. So you know. That's that's what I always giants baseball for hockey islanders. So is it. It's you know it definitely changed over the years you know. I'm kind of more of a magic fan. Even though they're not the greatest right now as far as you know when they were playing. But is it you know. Yeah Joey fatone hanging out with this year we sat to see. Eli Go then or was it time already. You know. He didn't officially retire. It's crazy he's like holding on to see him. Maybe he comes back next year. Well interesting people are coming back. You know you got Brady over in Tampa fourth trumpet when back and stuff. That's going to be interesting as well to see what's happening there. I'm I'm kind of excited. Kinda like it's interesting you know. It was the first time that you know Brady's been with the Patriots. Now is the first time he's actually moving over and it kind of an interesting thing to see what's going to happen with dynamic and everything. Yeah for sure I. I'm super curious to see how it works out to Joey. Fatone hanging out with us here. Check out his all in challenge again a trip for three to Disneyworld in universal with him Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick. Let me ask you about your drinking around the world. They all see. That's you don't you can't go to epcot without getting a drink around the world now I will say this I will say this the only suggestion and you probably know this start at Mexico. Don't finish Mexico to go never ended Mexico role. You started to go and I always work my way around. The end scored candidates that you work your way to the left. Yeah laughing all the way around. Yeah finish with this strong beer and the cool thing about it is if if it is time right and and the and the and the the the winters were able to go. I'm actually doing a show. Joey fatone in France for the food and Wine Festival Hopefully this October so I did it last year. It was great. Patrick came out Ryan Cabrera Johnny Damon. Come out on stage and try to sing which was hilarious but We we have a whole bunch of people. So if it's the timing timing is right rightness. What the end close to Halloween and things are open and everything and we're doing the show. Debbie become a VIP the show as well so the whole kind of combination if it all worked out as far as the timing is concerned Gotcha Joey. It's interesting because you and I have some similar stuff. We're about the same age I moved from Inwood. I grew up. I was born in Inwood in New York City in Manhattan and moved to Florida when I was six so I've been to. I've been to Disneyworld a million times. I've been to the food and Wine Festival. It is fantastic so when we get back to normal life. Hopefully everyone will take an opportunity to enjoy that. You mentioned Johnny Damon. I know you went to Dr Phillips. Did you go to high school with? Dj Cala to this is the weirdest thing about about Dr Phillips High School in Orlando Florida. The amount of how that came out of those few years within the five years either range. We had people like myself. Louise Fonzie Saint Pete Fito. Yeah the calendar in my class. Aj presents was well White sox and Johnny was a couple of years older than his that. My manager is is gosh longtime friends with him so we've always so interesting. How many people actually come out of that school with all this really. It is crazy now. Let me ask you about just kind of your time making music. Like what was the best way to describe what would be the best way to describe what it was like to be the biggest boy band in the world at that time fricking tiring going from. I think it's very similar to an athlete where you're on the go. You're constantly. You know perfecting your craft for say the and then they're always doing training always training up to the to the game say out. We're always rehearsing training in the studio and then getting on as to do the torch so it never stopped. It was like vicious cycle to where we were recording in the studio doing an album. Say for instance right after that we start shooting some videos and also start rehearsing for a tour. We'd release the album award show. Do Talk shows in the midst of hurting for a tour when the tour go on. We'd still doing other award shows in between those times. If we're still on tour in the middle of a of a tour twelve US would go to plane we get on the plane hop to California do the MTV emptied and then fly back in the middle of our tour and then it just stop so..

Every day I disliked in on that song as I'd walk over from the newsroom over the SPN radio yeah he was. Hi Jeff good to have you back. What's on your mind? And we know that we were talking about 'em Dang dunker. I was thinking of the Gods. That was a pretty good ducker And we didn't get much but when we played them he was awesome awesome. I wanted to speak to avert lander state of mind. The reason why he wanted to know I mean you coming from Detroit. You got a hot wise loaded up while your car's Yeah. Houston and I'm wondering inside his contract you want plan for nothing and I mean I. It's to the point where he must have priority because he was getting married in this contract is there an incentive if he pitches in the world that's a lot of money because I'm sure he's Villanova sitting there looking at the trophy right now and he's good with whatever the commission adult about his trophies different than that piece of metal it's His lovely wife. Kate Upton yes yes. Appoint Starting Pitcher Justin Burland two thousand sixteen. His average runs support per game was four point. Three five runs. In two thousand Seventeen Berliners run support per game with the Astros was six point. Eight eight runs and The average that year run support. Mlb was four point. Six four runs almost two and a half more for Burland per game. Yeah I being an astro boy. I'm wondering do the Yankees play the Astros in spring training. Can we check on that? I believe they do but it check on that. Let's bring in Dave Roberts the dodgers manager. He joins US on the program. What do you want to talk about today? Dave Dan. It's good to have Thanks for having me on. I WanNa talk about the twenty. Twenty dodgers twenty twenty two all right. So you'll win the world series if what one thing if we get better every day. I know that's vague. But I like your like your question all right. Let's go talk about the Astros now can got it? How do you? How do you get your team to? I know that everybody's angry and wants a piece of meat. You know they they want their you know. Do Justice here. But how do you keep your team? Kind of focused on moving forward to twenty twenty I actually I. I don't think that's difficult I I think that you know people are sounding off but I think that in within our organization We got we just had our first day of pitchers and catchers full squad workouts So all guys are talking about is getting ready for the season did Magic Johnson. Just walking magic is in Chicago. He's on the phone And he might make a trip out to Glendale at some point. We're trying to get them out here to Arizona. Oh He's on a conference. Call there that you've got some good. Intel man very good. This is real time stuff. I heard somebody say hi magic so. I'm assuming that you don't have anybody on your team. They magic no war number. Thirty two showtime phone We're trying to get them here Yeah as far as cody. Bellinger's comments Justin Turner. What do you do as a manager? They're in a situation like like that that they want to express their opinions. But what do you say to them? Well I I think that it's expressing your opinions your thoughts and after that then you move forward so I think that Those guys are entitled to thoughts and opinions and they were voiced. And we're already to move forward. What did you sense in two thousand seventeen when you when you face the Astros? Anything in particular. No just just a a really evenly matched ball club and Very talented did you ever think feels like every team has a guy who's trying to get an edge and steal signs but not do it with surveillance or cameras there to the dodgers have that guy who's looking at the third base coach trying to sneak peek at the catcher. We have a lot of guys that are always trying to get that On field advantage and I think that that's that's kind of baseball and that's the fun thing that kind of You know behind the curtain stuff that that draws people and the thinking part of the game so we have a lot of guys like that when you were second base. Now you're playing days you're looking in. What what can you see? And then what can you convey to the? Did you ever do that or have somebody do that for you? Absolutely and that. That's baseball downright fun. Part the fun part about it and you know when you get pitchers acting kind of change things up and kind of keep you on your toes and keep you guessing. That's the fun part. That's the game within the game. But how do you send that message to the hitter? Just try subtle moves. That's like whether it's the helmet. It's the front foot. It's a right foot I it's the The look one way. There's a lot of different things and every team has different. Ways to kind of relay talking to Dave Roberts by the way his red stitch wine is. The CAB is spectacular. You liked it Yes Yeah you've you've done a great job. That's basically me asking for more red wine. Okay done on. Its way no it that red stitch wine that you came up with. I think you guys started like two thousand seven. But I don't think you've had a batch that's been under ninety as far as the rating there so it hasn't had one day. We're going to get together. We're going to do a little vertical tasting. How about that? I'm okay with that. I'm good with that. GimMe the like what's Jock. Peterson's future there with the dodgers Jackson a great place and obviously I think.

"It as they say we are two Games in to the lcs we are two games into the NFL. It's a real shame we never quite did get an a an NFL CS over there in the National League we got quite serious going on an American league were you surprised that that they can all the over after two games no not at all not at all because I think I think just watching Scherzer's asleep watching Sherzer is it weird that just kind of watching one guy can give me this feeling but I almost feel like Max is And even in the interviews he's almost like look I'm just going to speed through this right now because my mindset is so focused right now that even speaking in words that don't lead me to getting better for my next start this year I don't even want to say him I don't even need you to hear other words that aren't helping me get better so right now everything that Max Scherzer is doing everything he sang the way he is physically moving in the world gives nat spans everything that in my opinion they need to hold onto right because they're they're they're lead horses saying not this year no fucking chain Senate eight no it ain't stopping at the we're going to the show I love that I have to believe that the rest of the team is picking up on that I have to believe the rest of the team is starting to realize you know what we are we are up two games to none right now we've got two more nick starts to the for starting nine because every tweet that I get from a cardinal's fan why do you hate the red cards why do you hate the cardinals we re just we're honest if we don't feel like they're going to win the series we're going to pick the team that we think is GonNa win the ears and we all had the nats and guess what you're going back to DC so it's the worst the worst richards the redbirds vans with Sean doolittle and dod and everybody else start to figure shit out down there in the bullpen because like oh wow he was our opening here is the window right and now these guys are they're not fucking it up in the seventh eighth ninth inning right now what's going on we're supposed to be one of these ballgames shit were not by the way some some up some loose ends here with the division series the dodgers well we have an interview with Dave Roberts today let's just say we expect to the dodgers to to make it past the division series why we ended up putting out this interview after they're eliminated that's not a troll that's hey we expected you know this conversation about the postseason in the world series in nineteen being better than seventeen and eighteen we expected that to still be relevant when the interview came out however you know the hot Israel's now now it'll just be an interesting way to go back and look at how they felt about their team in July or whatever that wasn't pretty sure it was like mid July and we can compare it to what actually happened it'll be fun yeah and if you're still stewing over maybe some of the decisions that were made you know this will give you an opportunity to me he kinda put that to bed and just remember Dave Roberts in a light where everything was exciting you knew what you had in front of you you know because when you have in front.

I don't know who it was took exception to it and that was the first banging your your bad against the top of the dugout the getting getting out of the heave ho so yeah. Thanks for a good catching up. We'll see this week right back at you. That's dave roberts dodgers manager. I mean what what they're doing september except make it through the month. No let me do the exact proper math right. They're the only team came closest to them. Are the seventy five and fifty two braves. The dodgers are eighty three and forty four. I mean there's no that's it. The divisions wrapped homefield throughout the the <hes> an l. Playoffs is wrapped. I guess that's what is important for. This weekend is home field. That vantage for the world series is on if they to take on the yankees and if they have to take on the astros again there too in front of him and the yankees and the dodgers at the same exact record again those could you imagine if cranky shows up to dodger stadium as an astro in the world series i went to one game where he showed up as a diamondback to dodgers and you know dodger stadium is is i wouldn't call it genteel it. You know the the folks in the in the bleachers can give it can business is as good as any other fans but you know around the home plate area a little different than other places and <hes> the game i went to the dodgers got back to back to back home runs off of the diamondbacks two of them off of cranky and they got taken out of the game and it was dodger palooza in the stance..

"Dodgers Dave Roberts back on the show. How you skipper rich? What's happened? How you doing my doing great? I'm doing great before we get to all of that. Being obviously the baseball season and the dodgers there's a big huge conversation in the sports world out of the NFL about change of instant replay. What's your stance on instant replay with baseball? You know, what I think actually I'm a fan. I think that, you know, the players and speaking for people, obviously, I've got a bias of you know, on the field, and I just want the call to be right. And I think that there are times where you know. It's it's kind of undecided or the call stands. But I think for the most part these guys get it right with the replay. I don't think it takes much time as people think and for me, I think for the most Brad liked to get the call, right? More than not. So I'm a fan base bomb Easley when you're talking whether balls beaten someone to the bag or a ball, fair or foul or over the the wall. I mean, I it's usually a line involved. What what what's happening in the NFL is a judgment call? Would you wanna see balls and strikes replayed? Dave. No, no. I don't think I would like to see that. But I do think that you know, I think that you know, there's been talk about that electric strikes. Zone and stuff like that. Where there's still a place for the home plate on pyre. And I think for anyone I think that you know, one side the human element. I think is part of baseball has always been. But again, the part of getting it right is kind of for me outweighs a little bit. And I I will say though is that when baseball players complain about her once to lecture strike zone. I think the hitter is going to have a rude awaking because there's a lot more strikes called at balls that they think so. So that's gonna be something that's going to unfold, you're sure in the next year. So interesting when you what do you mean by that you think an electronic I might be more. I think would favor more the pitcher. What what do you think that? I think that there's bowls that where the hollow the knee right below the kneecap and above the Belder, the the kind of where you take your stance right below the armpits or however, it's kinda verbiage the rule book. I do think that that low ball that players think is down is a strike, and, you know, more for me, it's north and south versus east and west west. I think that they're the pitchers get a little bit more on the corners. But I think north and south I think that it would electric strikes, and I think it would be a shock that the balls called strikes. Dave Roberts dodgers manager here on the rich Eisen show. What your favorite opening day memory? Dave. I think for me my first one with the dodgers that was two thousand two dodgers giants. I hit lead off that game. Kevin Brown, lavar. Hernandez, Barry Bonds on the other side. Side. We ended up getting our butts kicked. I think bury it to Homer set day. But just to kind of be my my first opening day start on the line. Dodgers giants Felipe the Lewis on the other side, Jim Tracy my manager. It was it was pretty special moment for what's your first opening day. What was your first one was that in ninety nine or is that you? Ninety nine. And then by I one I think actually my first one because I kind of up and down for three years. And then my first full year was two thousand two thousand my first one while. Yeah. So I wanted the dodgers was your first one where you you came out of spring charged you out there. What what is your what is your take coming into a season after having too long seasons?.

Thank you for being with us, Jeremy. Good to be on. Thank you for having me Dave. You know, it's the seventy first anniversary of Jackie Robinson crossing the color line becoming the first African American in the major leagues in the twentieth century. Would you think about the significance of that achievement of that milestone? Well, what are the first thought you have in your head? Well, I think the first thought is how far we've come, but also Jeremy is how far we have to go, you know, and I and I think that obviously, no in Rachel and shared personally, and you know, understanding and you put it in context of seventy one years and and how our game is he fault and Jackie's vision, and a lot of people along the way. Obviously had to buy it and support him and what a strong man. He was from the stories I hear from from them as well as well as his former teammates done nukem and you know sandy Colfax, but understanding really Jeremy is that we still got along ways to go in as we speak today here in two thousand eighteen. You are the only African American manager in baseball. What do you think that says about how far we have to go? Yeah, and I think that you know, I it, it's a long ways, and I think that I talked to, obviously, I friends with dusty Baker who somebody I really, really admire. And Frank Robinson is a is a very, very good friend of mine as well. And so we talk about those things and and I as as an African American man of very proud of that, but wanting to give other guys opportunities in major league baseball. And you know, obviously has coaches as managers. And I think it's it's part of, you know, major league baseball, that responsibility and also individuals themselves, but understanding what African American manager offices out enough. We're speaking with Dave Roberts the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers as we celebrate Jackie Robinson's legacy here on the sporting life this week, and it's something we've been talking about for longtime, Dave, declining participation of African Americans. In our national pastime you, you're forty five years old. You played ten years in the major leagues you are now, the only African American manager in the game as as we stated to what you attribute the decline, which has been going on for a long time. Well, I I think that you you, you nailed it. It's been going on for a long time, and I think that obviously, you look at the big three as far as sports and baseball football, basketball. I think that the inner city, the African American kids are. Gravitating more towards football and basketball, and that's happened over the course for me. In my opinion, when I first signed a contract in nineteen ninety four, I thought it was training in the right direction. I don't have them or speak to that, but I think over the last twenty years, it's been a steady decline. And then we see where we're at right now, and I think that I know that major league baseball, there's a pipeline committee and and also there's the check Robinson little league youth and trying to get a wariness and the RBI program. And I just continue to think we've got to continue to keep pushing incursion these young kids to follow enroll models of African American baseball players. I think that right now Jeremy. These get American athletes. The role models are guys that play in the NBA or in the NFL and there aren't too many guys like torii hunter and left plan our game. I guess Dave, I'm a. I'm a baseball guy. I love baseball. I grew up with baseball. It's it's the sport that that I feel the most emotionally connected to, but it's changed so much. I mean, when you look around, would it takes now for American kids, it's different. I think for kids in the Caribbean Venezuela, Dominican Republic, but for kids in the US, the expense, the expenses of traveling and coaches, and I live in affluent town on the east coast where you'll kids from the age of six and seven, their parents are spending so much money and so much time on their development is that one of the barriers here were talking about to increase participation in the African American community? I think I think actually, I mean, I think that you see now, gosh, I have a seventeen year. Old son has been playing travel ball since he was eleven, eleven, twelve, and that sort of late. And I think that nowadays with with economics. Financial abilities or capabilities where tear point is kids are playing one sport nowadays when whatever sport it is and their focusing on one sport and they're doing the lessons and the travel balls and given whatever kid planning on particular sport and extra advantage and where two lessons and Trump all that costs money. And you look at these intercity kids and families that's not gonna happen. You know, the resources aren't there. So too big of basketball and to go to court and run a game. That's definitely more likely, you know. So I think that's definitely one component, and that's a tough barrier to overcome, but I absolutely understand that, but that's a bigger issue as far as giving those kids an opportunity to play travel ball, which is sponsored essentially by major league baseball or the players union coming together. And working together for something on inner cities around the nation. I mean, or particular team supporting a certain community. That's that's a bigger issue, which I would love to see a trend in that direction. We're speaking with Dave Roberts manager of nationally champion Los Angeles Dodgers, and
