She wants to know she saw some purple asparagus in the market. Is that better than green asparagus? And do you cook it the same. Any difference between purple so no. And yes. Go on. It's not any different into its just different in color, but it's not different once you cook it, and the flavor is exactly the same. Right. It turns green when you cook it. So of the flavors exactly the same. All right? I'm not quite sure where that comes from That purple thing I think it said maybe nine regions the hybrid of some sort. Yeah, alright. Lin McGregor from our Petri on, says she she needs to harvest six kohlrabi plants. Do you have any ideas? Six kohlrabi plants pick him. She's just going to hurt his harvest. Those get harvested, I think is what she's interested in. Sure. Yeah. Salad, kohlrabi salary You can do. Ah, Nice roasted. You can do a soup. The roast like a turn up just like him. So they met down. Basically, if another. Especially now there may be a little dry this time of year. No, actually, they're very moist, so they melt down. So i'ma be kind of reason. The meltdown. What are you saying, meaning that they have a lot of water contents of the differently much down, So it's it's great to mix kohlrabi and potatoes together into a nice mashed potato. Like a soft mashed potato kind of idea. I think I think if you're going to personally, if you're going to go that route, I like celery root or parsnips, or you have a little more flavor. If you're gonna have kohlrabi two potatoes to me, it's just going unless you've Roasted him all the way to a caramel. They're just gonna water out your potatoes. No, exactly. That's what I was saying is very moist so, but they do well as a recently so you just slice them and you just cook them in a little duck Fatto. Pork, fat bacon, fat, Whatever fat you have. They do. Really? Well, that way. Secretary would and pickled Obviously, you know you shred them. And you are you are you Julian them, But Ernie, whatever size you want to make them Then you've pickled them And then you would have kicked him out like you. Would any. Any vegetable cucumber Li come out whatever. Then you keep that in your refrigerator, and then you have them for many different garnish is called salads. Especially when you make like picnic baskets and everything you know, hot, boiling potato salad and then pickled. Um Vegetables on top, you know, and that's a Good idea for picnics and stuff like that. I like him shredded matchstick size into making a coleslaw type thing, especially with something that's soft right because then they're really crunchy. It's It's crunchy slaw. You have a better texture sometimes than a flimsy cabbage slaw. And then the the outside part of the of the vegetable is also usable. Green path, you know, generally leaves, you know, It's also nice you can sort it out very quickly. That on the side of a roast beef or whatever you're doing for for meat like a grilled steak, garnished. All right, Jim, are is asking. Do you have some tips for cold chicken like to have a picnic? It's picnic season. Finally, any idea for that cold chicken? Oh, my God. So many. I mean, I'm a big fan of wants one ball When you go pick Nick because I don't like to have The difference where I go picnic, But if you go to the beach or said, whether it's sand I'm a big fan of having just one big giant ball of with the entire salad in the balls, so green beans Chicken Cold Chicken dies green beans ob Oleg potatoes, put everything together Capers like a chopped salad very and ready to go. And, you know, bring you bread with you. And you and your bottle of wine. So you have to do is one moves. You just put everything on top of your bread. Initial sandwich just like that, And then like that way, I don't like to have too much work to do on the beach because I'm always afraid of. You know, the sun getting in the only thing I like to do. It's like if I'm bringing a pasta salad or something. Andi. I like my pasta salad with big chunks of shredded recorded salata. You know, Rygel leaves all that sort of thing. I like to bring the dressing separate, and if it's possible to do that, Just bring your dressing because by the time you get to the beach or the picnic area you're dressing has either soaked into the past and it's gone is wilted. All the other and goes on the bottom acid in it, and top doesn't have any. So you're better off even if you don't want to toss the pasta salad or something of that nature. You're better off just pouring the dressing on each individual portion on each plate just instead of trying to pre toss and this pasta really does kind of soak up a lot as it's it's absolutely Yeah. All right. Dave Nelson wants to know Tom specifically to you. If when you're out on the golf course you have a special snacks. You like what you eaten on the course. I generally eat beef jerky. You gotta gotta carry candy is steady, but you go in there and you have all these small bags of beef jerky, and they've got bags, energy bars or whatever. Oh group police company that owns a fiber optic network. It's up about ten percent. Yo group Z A Y O R their Dow component. No. But they're saying that they're looking at strategic alternatives. And you know, what that means the possibility of a deal and Zale put off an analyst meeting set mid March another science. This week in the middle child said I'm looking at strategic. We got a bachelor retail earnings. I'll just no dollar tree. Biggest company among them up three and a half percent. The dollar store chains fiscal fourth quarter sales at stores open more than a year beat analysts average estimates. Writing on Kohl's calls was something yesterday. Kohls and target. Both. Putting the mass merchants are doing fine. Data. Try nail Ross stores sort of an exception of the off price chain down two and a half percent of their results. Wilson. Thank you so much Bloomberg stocks. Dave Wilson, thanks so much. I mean, boy more retail earnings, and Tom we're going to get to more retail earnings. I'm sure today, but one of the stories in the retail were that really caught my attention was with WalMart. Remember, they reported very strong earnings couple of weeks ago. They are moving they're making a move to shift its economy, people greeter, some, you know, those are folks when you walk in a store, and they greet you very nicely. They're going to try to move that job into ones requiring more physical duties, and apparently that change in the job description is running into some serious legal problems. So to help us kind of break all that down is page. Smith pages of Bloomberg law labor reporter for Bloomberg. She is coming to us from a remote studio page. Thanks so much for joining us. Boy. Those iconic people greet greeters. What is changing what that role? Yeah. That's a good question. So WalMart wouldn't necessary necessarily clarified to us, exactly. What was changing with the role? But. People greeters are often that role is often occupied with by individuals with disabilities and older workers as well as just. A number of other of categories of workers and the role itself is transitioning onto a new title called. Well, I should say some of them are transitioning into a title called customer hosts, so the some disability. Disability advocates have told us that there might be some new requirements like having to have individuals lift heavy boxes. I think the requirement was like twenty five pounds and also maybe being asked to climb ladders and things like that. Let's see it seems like this. Why do you think WalMart is doing is? This simply kind of a cost cutting issue to maybe make these folks, maybe more efficient and more productive. Well, so the again, they have kind of said that it's a business necessity, and they ran some numbers, I guess that it would make more sense for them to kind of transition and ask these folks to do more if they if you will, but in two thousand and five actually there was a leaked internal memo where WalMart did kind of come out and say blatantly that they wanted to quote attract a healthier workforce and reduce health costs pays your article is absolutely superb. Folks, it's got a summary changed jobs description. Spelled trouble up hill. Battle ahead for employees in court attorneys say it's. As we expect page from you and Bloomberg law. It's just brilliantly laid out is there a distinction that these greeters are part time versus pulled full-time is that really what this comes down to know, actually. So the legal distinction the uphill battle that I was in court that I was referencing is actually when folks tried to bring Americans with Disabilities Act claims or ADA claims in court nine times out of ten actually they're doomed to fail because there's such a high burden of proof or the fact that the employees themselves have to prove that the employers were blatantly discriminating. But of Saturday Night Live jokes. But we all agree that greeters at WalMart are conic to the American fabric. It's always somebody to that brand. Ancient they wear a bow tie to Michael Barr. Do you know what I'm talking about here? They're older. They're ancient. Welcome. Okay. Not to make fun about it. Is you say they wanted to pick up boxes now. I mean this. This sounds like it was made for the ADA. Right. So you would think but again just going off of similar cases. So there was a case, for example, and right in twenty eleven against Rite Aid, where kind of similarly a job changed. But a person who said his was a little bit different. He said he was afraid of needles and said that that was a disability. But. Slightly different. But he did try to bring his claim against Rite Aid, and he lost. So in a court of appeals for bud. You know, it really just kind of goes to say that, you know, unless the employers are blatantly saying, they're trying to eliminate a certain group of people then. Yes, the burden of proof is very it's challenging to win these page. How many greeters are there? Do you know? So that's a good question. Another thing we kind of tried to ask wal mart, and they sort of brushed aside. And it all shows also should be said that some of these workers some of the people greeters have kind of already been trained into these new roles the customer hose, okay? But others haven't there's kind of this weird holding pattern. Walmart isn't giving them care when they're going to have a job or if they're going to have to leave it there. Paceman? Thank you so much Bloomberg law. Just brilliant on this wall. Interesting. Walmart store futures negative one. Dow futures negative nineteen. This is Bloomberg. Let's get national headlines right now with Michael Barr. Michael, thank you very much ball. Dave Nelson is with dialogue consulting. We're gonna talk a little bit about social media. Why in the world do you as a company need to use social media? And how do you make sure that you are not missing out on all of those people that are burning down Google solve their problem. If they're not finding you they're finding your competitor. And you need to be in the mix. What do you think about this j though I can't I couldn't agree more? I, you know, I'm I'm one of those guys that you know, it was hard to buy into this. But it's where it is. And I'm telling you if you're not into it, you need to get it you need to listen today. You need to to take this serious. Dave, Nelson dialogue consulting. Dave. Welcome to the show. Thanks, Matt pleased to be here. I see again, Jay. So tell me about dialogue consulting. What do you do who? Do you do? And who are you here to talk to well, I'm here to talk to typically mid size business owners. Maybe if you sell business to consumer, you know, some of this I find the people that sell business to business. There's a lot to learn and dial consulting actually started podcasting company called talks, you dot com. And if you wanna do your own podcast, it's still out there. Sure. Thirteen years after I started. But in that space, I learned social media from the inside sort of as the revolution happened. And I guess here's the headline every day half of all internet traffic starts with a search. And hey, you wanna get found when they're looking for what you do. And it turns out when you look inside the clicks on Google sincere. The big search engine most of our free seventy seven percent. So yeah, I've got nothing against pay per click advertising. That's awesome. But that's a small game. We wanna play the big game. And the way you play. That game with content often delivered through one of these social media vehicles. So let's get your fair share and more. And in a sense. I spend a lot of time business to business. Do you realize that ninety four percent A B two B buyers today research online for their purchase decisions? Well, just like consumer bikes. Absolutely body burns down Google solve their problem. Right. Right. And people get this on the consumer side my messages. Yeah. Everything I'm saying applies to consumer focused companies, but beat ABI ninety four percent of people are researching online and they're making up about two thirds of their purchase decision before they reach out to the very first vendor. If you're out there with content, you're not getting found will and this gets even better because a lot of the B to B guys the industry, generally sucks at it. Right. Very much agree. More put it a little more. I mean, it's not like consumer. I mean, if you were in the direct consumers spam filtering, but that's gonna be a lot harder fight than it is if you're in the, you know, industrial filters business, right? I mean, the industrial filter. I don't know anything about that. By the way, I'm making it up as an example. But they're not going to be as good at that. As some of these consumer industries and there's low hanging fruit. Right. I agree. I talked about one hundred and twenty groups a year, which probably represents collectively thousand beat ABI companies. And I'm constantly amazed. How bad they are at this. Which means that if you decide you want to you don't pick up the ball and run with it. It's a pretty clear playing field. And I've I've worked with companies that have just seen their traffic goes through the roof because they decided they were going to focus a little bit on creating content and delivering these social media platforms. Well, I'll tell you what you know. It's it's interesting that company, and I've read articles about this in ten years ago when my wife's real estate brokerage. We. We put and built a media company in it for that identical purpose right to to ensure that we had massive amounts of high quality content going out to play that long game with with searches. How how many companies are going to have to develop something like that within their own company in the near future? I'll just say all of the survivors. That's that's a good way to put it. This is really critical because so much of the traffic starts to the search and not every you don't want your competitors getting found and framing that purchase decision. Right. You're gonna lose. And so we want to play that game. Do have a warning people are typing in some key words that represent what you do. And their words are not necessarily your lingo. Right. So we actually have to use some science some data to figure out what people search for and happily Google provides a wonderful free tool. It's called the keyword planner. And it shows you search frequency. On any term, in fact, when you put in one term, then it'll show you hundreds of others that are related and all we wanna do is pick terms that have a high enough search for him to be interesting. But also show you how competitive it is to get ranked. And so we want the ones that aren't that competitive? And this tends to point you to more specific search terms what we talk about long tail. So it's not just one word. It's usually a combination of words, but here's where I see people in the market that are in. I hate hearing about this. Because I hear all the time. I will get you on the first page. They are selling solution wrong problem. You don't need to be on the first page of Google you need to be on the first page of Google for hundreds of items. Right. Well, often what they're talking about. First of all ninety nine percent of those people are shysters. Yeah. And if they're legit what they're probably talking about is the paid advertising. Right. The pay per click stuff. That's how somebody can guarantee you're on you, pay Google. That's not the real game. The real game is let's get good quality content out there and get the seventy seven percent that people weren't paying for. That's the big game. Well. Yeah. And and unfortunately, there's not a painless way to do. I mean, this is going to take some thought by the business. This isn't something that you write a check higher your nephew to to sit in a back office in handle this for you. There's gotta be some effort in energy organizationally energy put into this. Correct. I would call it strategy. Right. You have to understand the audience the customer or prospect, you're trying to reach and then you have to create content that's of value to them. And the typical strategy is to do something that's educational for them. You get to demonstrate your expertise you get to frame their thinking which guides the purchase decisions that was thought leadership. There's a lot of things happen with this is not easy. Let's acknowledge that. In fact, it turns out that the, you know, blogging is one of my favorite platforms companies that blog creating regular content. Get on average fifty five percent more traffic and it's not random traffic. It's qualified traffic. But the blogs do best are north of a thousand words. Length. So you think about this? I've got to be consistent about blogging because Google ages out content as we go. And so once or twice a month. I've got to produce a blog posts that's north of a thousand words, actually valuable to my target audience. That's not easy. So let's that's not easy. But this is the job of a marketer today. You've got to create value for your target audience. And by the way, let's look at how they interact with it. We gotta have some measurements to tell when we're doing. Well. And I'm talking simple stuff. There's a button that says click to read more if your audience clicks that they're saying this is good content. I was interested if they don't they're telling you don't give me more like this. And so marketing takes strategy. It's gotta be continuous content creation. It's gotta be good qualities judge not by you. But by your audience, and that's not easy, and you can screw this up. I mean companies out there can actually damage their brand by by by not doing this effectively. Yes. And in fact, if you do take one of those random, you know, spam calls it says. Going gonna put you on page one Google, you might find that you're actually banned from Google because when people attempt to go with what I call the black cat techniques. Now shortcut the system Google has a way to dissect that and they'll they'll declare the eighteen month death penalty on your. So we're not going to try to shortcut this. We're actually going to try to understand our audience and give them content that's of value to them. Well, you're actually doing exactly what it is. Search engines are wanting you to do their incenting good behavior. They want you to develop quality content, so their equality. Search results for searches that people do exactly what is Google purpose in life. Somebody types keywords are trying to give you the best possible possible content. So if your job and your business if your goal is to make good contact for your target audience. I think we can trust that Google will bring them to you..
