"You're listening to Sunday Night baseball on ESPN Radio ESPN. Thank you, Wrigley as we go to the bottom of the ninth bottom third of the order, Greg Dyckman just started off against Jose Ruiz 26, year old from Venezuela and for the 40th time of 353 e R, a 42 strikeouts in 43 a third innings. It's pretty amazing Chris, so his strikeout rate is 23.1% so effectively if you strike out a batter and inning, your league average, he's Davis pitched the statement and that's in for a strike. And I'm not saying that the batters don't participate in it. But even mean Nolan Ryan's career strikeout rate was about 25%. I mean, that's in the line 23.5% with the league average is now. Feel Y is upstairs. So everybody's Nolan Ryan in 2021. It's ridiculous. Oh, or on the flip side. All the hitters are. Yeah. You do an old school hitter in there that struck out all the time. Dave Kingman, Dave Kingman. Yeah. Pitch is fouled off the plate by date. How is Brian Downey? Was he a big strikeout guy Feel like I remember. I don't think he was a plant ear. Bryan.

"There's a great draft coming up next year, and let's really start to focus on it next year. You know what they might surprise some people they might be in the fight for one of those top 10 spots. Maybe getting to the many playoff Theo see if they could move a little further down the way many players being in the running for the many playoff would be a huge win based on the expectations going into the season. But you mentioned on questions questions. We ask this King's pregame life tonight. I'm keeping one eye on the game right now. But I said the end of the show the king's heir foreign for right now it's 72 game season. If I gave you the chance to sign up right now, for 36 36, would you sign up for it right now? Today after seeing what you've seen from this team, I think so, because I think that gets you close enough to be to be in the running for for one of those those last ones. S o. I think I would take that as a A good building block from last year and not a disappointment is a big win. Especially when you're trying to build around a young core. Create a winning culture on bond. What you mentioned on Halliburton falling to 12. I've only heard this reported on briefly mentioned in the single basketball podcast that I listened to where somebody reporter who is reputable and I trust Was inferring that That Halliburton was limiting his workouts with various teams in the top 10 because he was trying to make his way to the King's because he thought he complimented with Fox so well that paired with the Aaron Fox preemptively signing a Max extension. Having two of your best players actively wanting to be in Sacramento and not looking for the next flight out is is a feeling I am not accustomed to is a king's fan, and I love it. And it gives the front office the ability to build on the parallel timelines of these two young phenoms contracts, and I'm thrilled. I'm thrilled. Well, long time Kings fans can remember that there were times not so distant that players wouldn't pick up the phone or agents wouldn't pick up the phone when the king's called and they would not come and work out here, and now you've got two players who have actively said they want to be here. And even if the story about Terry's Halliburton is not true if I heard him Would trump that story because he will become king of Kings in the capital city of fans here are begging for people they can love. And if he if I if you were a smart guy, and I know he is That's not something I would deny. Let's put it that way. I would certainly not deny that story. Now. I I know that Pat Walsh is a gigantic Dodgers fan. I believe if memory serves you, too, are a Dodgers fan. Exactly. I'm a cup fan X. That's right. Your Cubs Ross, That's J. Ross. That's the Dodger fan. Okay, but like I was a Giants fan. I love Tommy Lasorda. Even though I was a Giants fan, I imagine even as a cubs fan, you can't help but be just drawn to the loveliness of who that guy was. One of the great rants in Tommy Lasorda's career came after a cup game in which Dave Kingman had full bombs, and someone asked his opinion of Kingman's day. And if you go on the Internet somewhere, you could find the rant and 80 is delicious. It is right. With naughty words nsfw people. It's an SF 75 11 weeks around your toe to cover that up, and maybe maybe get that on later, bleeped out version you might be able to play tonight You might be able to find it, but I know that it was the first that comes with it was the player who if I'm looking for it. Dave Kingman, and it was bliss orders reaction to Dave Kingman. And, um, I'll see if I can find that cause I pulled. I pulled a couple of my other kind of sort of favorites. Over the years. I was gonna play some of those later, So I'll see if I can get that one into the mix to that. Sounds like a blast. Yeah, that'll be a fun one. That'll be a really fun. Would you like that when he really got up? He had a good time getting that the reporter on that one. Has he always an often did but coast. It was very kind of you toc up away and take a few moments to join me here on the Pat Walsh. Oh, very She had a great to catch up with you. I can't wait till we get to watch a kings game in person again, buddy. Look forward to talking to you soon. Well,.

"If Trump's presidency was a country western song, it would be Lost everything and the friends of walking away with a walking away or did they get fired? Hey, kind of said Yeah. You know, he's had a good relationship with him, so I think it was a mutual Uh, departure, but in saying that we both know this, Kato said. It only takes about two seconds for him to turn on you. And so we'll see. What is it happening in by the way, turning on you just see the something Trump put out about who's the worst governor? And he said, the governor of Georgia and the or the governor of Arizona, and so think about it for a second. Yeah, these are two guys that bent over backwards for Trump during the election. They did anything and everything that he wanted them to do. And the only thing that they did was say Biden had more votes in my state. They didn't say anything. They just said, Hey, here's the Here's the Here's. Here's the thing. They got. They got more votes. He got more votes to you Did I just have to certify this? I don't right. That's it. I'm saying he turned on him, Of course, and he turned and he turned on him. But I mean, you see, here's the thing. All right, so so attorney General, uh, William Barr, he's out. Okay? I wonder if he got fired or he's just like You know, I don't need this anymore because he was also saying, Hey, I don't see any problems with the election, right? So, you know, is everybody going just like taken early vacation? You mentioned it a couple weeks ago. After everything is said and done. And now we have, you know the votes that came in today and it zip done deal. And the Electoral College's cast the votes and they reaffirmed that Biden's gonna be the next president. I mean, just Trump just say I'm done. And does he just take everybody with him and say, Hey, we're kind of we're kind of threw gettin want us. We're gonna take our ball and go home. Yeah, that's a possibility. Look, the reality is he may say I'm out. You've got it for the next 20 days or I could see him going. Christmas Day. Go, Mike Pence. Go ahead. Here you go. You won't be President. God Christmas present. That's 2026 days. Enjoy it. At least we'll be able to put that there. I have no idea what he's going to do. But what I do know it. This point in time is is that the ship is sinking. And it's going down fast. Yeah, but isn't it sad? It doesn't have to sink. It could just be it got to its next jet destination. And we're getting off of this destination and we may reboard it and try it again. Right? Right, right. That's exactly right. And it's like, why does it have to sink? Because everything trump did wasn't bad know and the fact that we haven't It wasn't bad. This vaccine Is partly on him. But it doesn't matter. He stepped on the neck of people, and he said, get it done as fast you possibly can, and that was something good that he did. But I just think it's like with trumpets. It's either it's either a home run or the most horrific strikeout. You could possibly imagine He's dead. King matters plate. Yeah, it's a home run or nothing. Dave Kingman for those, you guys don't know what the baseball player who, hey, had more home runs than his batting average. And it was either a home run or he went down swinging because you know as that movie signs That great movie signs it never. It never felt right to go up there, not suing, and that's kind of what Trump is all about. Craziness chaos, But what do you expect? It's a Monday It's December. Normally the quiet time of year and none of that matters. Kids, it's against chatter. Arizona's new station,.

I was a guy, but I I'm not. I'm not. Hire to do to come watch my kids. It's gonna be a chick, you know, maybe Centre in general is really good looking college age guy came by. I can't believe that my daughters, but I take that back. Well, there's been a few times where I have put our kids to bed. And then we've had, like one of the neighbor kids come over as a guy who's in his team will come over and watch and watch the baby monitors. You know what I mean? Like you to sit there and watch TV and kids are already in bed with my wife and I'll slip. Your kids are really young, though girls and Charles in charge had developed Upped, right. So I like the way you put that they love Nicole Eggert. Josie Davis wasn't good looking gals, right? So would you bring in this super good looking Dude, that's new to the neighborhood tow watch over your smoking hot teenage daughters? No, not at all. What is the name Tommy Lasorda mean to you? You're a baseball guy, Retired Dodgers manager. Very successful, well known Dodgers AH, manager Right world champion. One a couple rings with the Dodgers, one of the great personalities in the history of the game, and he used to get fired up. The great sound bite from Tommy Lasorda was after Dave Kingman hit three home runs against the Dodgers. Some reporter asked Tommy Lasorda, What did you think of Kingman's performance? What's my opinion of your performance? What do you think It's my pregnant was put that in the opinion of his performance. He beat us with three. That was amazing. That was pretty mild mannered for Tommy Lasorda O'Neill, assorted 93 years old today. One more here for you. David Coverdale, Singer for Deep purple and white Snake.

"A 20 year old high school friends, college friends that you're still keep in touch with maybe a former player from the Bears who like you will always love. Deep down this person, you will always love, but they've always been someone that you can actually trust. Whoa, whoa. You know what I mean, like, not really. Then they're not going to be on time. You don't know if they're going to be there, but it's okay because it's like my friends better than that. Like if I can't count on that person than the likelihood of them being in my top five is not high. That's that's what I'm trying to like. I don't have a specific friend of mine in mind. But like Everyone's got a friend who you always will love. That's good old whoever But you know, as we mature, they don't necessarily mature with us, and they sort of lettuce down along the way. But still, there's still always going to be our bod. And that's like baseball to me like baseball. Baseball was my first love. Baseball was my first friend. My first sports friend addressed this Dave Kingman. Damn it, And that was last Wednesday. Yeah, I got a picture. By the way. My mom found the picture. It's the front of the Cubs uniform should've posted in the break course it doesn't. You can't see the back of the jersey that says Caiman, But it's me with my baseball glove that Cubs uniform Lord, the only the good Lord would have known that the red ass that was Dave Kingman had himself a little protege and a Dave Kingman. Red Ass. Jersey is the worst hair in Skokie period. Which I still I still have flashbacks to every time you see, and just my hairstyle was combing it down. No, no, Harris Li, always a lever. I think we all did that. Let a terrible style. But anyway, baseball was buying and like I can't trust it anymore, though. It's still my bud. But like whether it's cheating in 17 whether it's cheating in 18 whether it's in fighting with You know players versus the owners, whether it's blacking out games on their MLB TV package. I got an idea. Stop humping baseball's leg and just take it for what it is. It's an entertainment and that's my problem that I still will. I will never truly leave baseball. I will always be there for baseball, but I'm still a little disappointed that baseball Is sort of that down in our buddy who's never gotten its life together. And has missed so many opportunities to better themselves. Let a whole team cheat all the way to a champion Jeff How could baseball have all these months to come up with a testing plan? And then on day three? Screw it all up. Just Yael. Let people in Because you you know you. You grease the skids, you know, and the kids go in, As you know, Crew member. I mean, Like they're letdowns in all walks of life, my friend like, I guess, at 53 I gave up on and as much as I love the NFL. I know that they're going to kick themselves in the wiener every now and again, But I still sit down and I watch Like a die hard fan every Sunday and I take it for what it is. And I know that the true love is my wife and my four kids and my close friends and my family. And I don't love football or baseball the way that I do, like really tangible, important stuff. That's all I know. And I'm not taking it out of context. Sounded like sound like last night that you were you were about to ready to throw your camomile tea cup over the edge of the deck Last night, I'm saying is, I'm sitting here with nothing to do at night except listens to the birds trip and drink this tea that's supposed to make me sleep better. A man in like I know, it's you got to just focus and I'm mid season three. So I have advanced. But again, it's just you've gotta like At least I could read when I'm sitting outside and you know what I want to have on. I want to have a baseball game on I want to have you want to be swearing. Jon Lester for throwing that meatball with bases juice with two outs in the seventh inning away. I don't swear John Laster, Jon Lester have done too much for me. Chaplain, Maybe, you know That's more likely to Yes, yes s o that. That's that's the night. Get it. Look, I get it. Listen, I I feel bad that baseball has hurt you in the manner that it did like I want to come over and hug you and tell you it's going to be okay. Baseball was never really the friend that you thought it was back in the day because throughout all those moments, you know, there were probably a lot of things that you just there was no Twitter. There's no social meet. You didn't know what was going on inside that Covey Club. Come on. Has it ever been worse to cheating scandals and what's going on with this stuff? I mean, this is your old buddy back at home, living in his mom's Basin basement at the age of 45 injected himself with Decca Ball it and human growth hormone is like, listen every decade has a ball. Every decade has been littered with stuff. You just haven't been So dialed into it. Maybe back in the day. You can't tell me that as you were this innocent young man walking the streets of Skokie, and you're Dave Kingman, Jersey that everything that was going on in Major League baseball are at Clark and Addison was all hunky Dorry and all above you don't know that. I'm going to just know that it's not now because there are so many different ways to To get access to everything..

"In San Diego they have a shot to win the Western Division and get in the playoffs for the first time since nineteen sixty two but to do it they've got to beat the San Diego Padres because the Dodgers are one game behind and they're gonna play Houston at the same time with don Sutton against Jack Billingham so for the giants at September thirtieth seventy one and who do they go when they need a win they're going to go to their hall of Famer to be and that is wonderful one merit shell he seventeen eleven going into the game he's going to pitch against Dave Roberts in his third year for the San Diego Padres I have thirty four thousand eight hundred sixty one on hand it is a Thursday and it is the last game of the season so if the giants win they win the division but marriage shell will not be able to open up the playoffs but you gotta get there first so this is the way it goes the giants lineup can Henderson Tito Fuentes Willie Mays Willie McCorvey rookie Dave Kingman dictates thirty Allen Gallagher Chris Speier also rookie that year and one matter shell for the Padres only their third year of existence they've got Mason at second Jess that a third Jeter in center Nate Colbert at first Ali brown the former giant in right Larry stall in left field Barton behind the plate Tommy dean of former Dodger at shortstop and Dave Roberts in his third year on the hill and he comes into this game of the record of fourteen and sixteen so this is the way it goes the giants have to win it to win the division to get into the playoffs and play the Pittsburgh Pirates all right the giants fourth Tito Fuentes gets a base hit Mays gets a double who else.

"He is going to be here at least for the next three years. You know who knows what happens to three years down the road things can change? But right now he wants to be here. Brian Cashman wants him here. He's here. And he's gonna play. And you know this just like I know this we've lost a lot of this guy in the National League east. He's a very good baseball player, bro. We don't have to yet. He's tremendous. He is a slugger. Does he strike out a lot? Yes. But I got a fact for you. You're ready for this nineteen strikeouts. He strikes out in his career at a less. Pace that doesn't make sense. He doesn't strike out as often over the course of his career on average than Clint Frazier yet. Clint Frazier's talked about, as this hero Frazier strikes out allowed to strike out a lot. That's just one thing that's been a misnomer. And by the way, Clint Frazier better get to the minor leagues reported yet. He should he should report that. Right. I didn't realize he has not reported check. I don't always he's got it looked Clint go report, given what is it? Seventy two hours to get traded you know, you're gonna get added. See 'cause I know he wants to he wants to get at it. You're gonna get traded. Go report. That don't be don't, don't be stupid. Mytalk reported it will Clint, come on. You're not helping yourself by not going to the minor league. And in fairness to Clint you are given is it seventy two hours. Get seventy two hours giving seventy dollars. Not quite seventy two but we're getting close, well, seventy one but either way, that's my only point about Giancarlo. Yes. He strikes out a lot. I get that. But Clint Fraser strikes out a lot Cameron maven strikes out, right? But you forget about those struck out a lot. Jackson struggle, did tell you those guys when you look at the pace, I always loved us Dave Kingman as an example. Well, Dave Kingman in today's day and age, if he struck out the same amount of times, he struck out would be considered he meant he puts about two hundred times even close not even close. I think so do I looked at Kingman strikeout numbers compared to like some of the modern guys and Dave Kingman doesn't even strike out early? The modern guy was a good guy. Okay. He'd be looked at a lot differently. He really will get a good guy. Well, I think if he was a good guy, you look at Kingman different than you do. And I also think that strikeouts were different in the late seventies, of course, how many times you think, is the most times he struck out near I'll say a hundred seventy five one fifty six. Wow. Today's game. That's that's you don't strike out that much. What's the most times? Mickey Mantle struck out in the season, one hundred twenty six now it's more than that. Season though. Hundred twenty six that's really the content. Reggia led the league, though. Yeah. How about Reggie did he hit one hundred seventy one year? Reggie. Let's see Reggie Jackson, the most he struck you got to one seventy one legitimately high one, seventy one sixty one one fifty six. See the thing about strikeouts is you gotta look at it in comparison. So Reggie led the league in strike. Yes. Five times. Mickey Mantle led the league in strikeouts. Two when you look at Mickey Mickey Dave Kingman strikeout totals and compare it to the right. Struck out nineteen times. Yeah. Yeah. Two hundred nineteen Giancarlo Stanton is already struck out. One two three four seasons. Over two hundred no four seasons where he struck out more times than Dave Kingman 's biggest strikeout year. Well, four times Kingman again. He's he was never looked at the right way in my mind because he was not a good guy. That was the big problem, I thought would king. Yeah. Watch him because he could eat a lot of big home runs along that big 'cause they weren't good teams he was on, but a lot of long home run. But you bring something up. So watching Dave Kingman was exciting because he had a lot long home runs. Giancarlo stanton. Does the same thing in time in which everyone does it? Yeah. That's true. Giancarlo is a very good baseball player. All right. No matter what Yankee fans may think of him at the moment or last year and Tober. But he does something a lot of other guys now do. And I think that's where his value is gone down over the last few years. So many guys at home runs in this gangqi lineup. We see it itself with Gary Sanchez, Aaron judge. Judge strikes out his motive. He does. But he's Aaron judge our judges a homegrown Yankee. It's, it's a different world would stay to do is you just gotta hit and then he's gotta hitting October and that will get the Anki fans office back, but you can call this station we can joke about it, because we were joking the Mets, and Yankees never making a trade. That's never happened, but he's not going anywhere. He's going to be on this team. I would somebody call a Mike yesterday and try to pitch Giancarlo trae, like five different ways to Mike and Mike. Right. When he says, he's not going anywhere. I got a full no trade clause. So as long as he wants to be here. He's here and he makes a credible amount of money. This is the way it is. But the keys to me or a better team with a healthy Aaron judge a healthy, Giancarlo Stanton, and having Gardner and Mabon on their bench. That's great. What a bench you need to give guy day off. Look, who you got you need a pinch runner late in the game. Luca choo? Who you have is another injury? Look good. Who you have there a deep baseball team? We know what they need. We all. I know what the deal is. They need a pitcher. They need in my book. They need a big time arm. And to me, the big time on his Madison Bumgarner who doesn't know Madison. Bumgarner dozen do about to be a jerk care. Goerner doesn't bond half acidly in sprint in batting practice and both the ball off his nose. He doesn't do that. He doesn't do that. All the guys do that. Other guys do that they play ran sitting there like, oh, let me try to the ball goes off the bat office knows any breaks. It. You know who I'm referring to, of course, is max Scherzer who broke his nose yesterday. Clip bunting played. Or he wasn't taking it serious, Joe. This wasn't a game. It was like batting practice. They don't play baseball anymore down there. They rain every game out. A lot of rain. So in a game they get rained out match. I guess it wasn't raining for an hour. Shire's day can be pita. They have a helmet on his around he doesn't care you standing up in the air, kind of have acidly ball comes word half acid. Yeah. Ball goes off the dictionary, but we created it strategically but our president and he used it. Well, there you go. It went off his face, and he broke his nose. That would never happen about as well also if he's with the it wouldn't be hitting. It's like well, hey, hey, I'll be home. Rosie twenty Korean high. That. Digit a double, I would guess eleven be my guess. Get closer a lot. That's a lot of home runs. Of course, we need the D H. We need team man. Nobody hits. Even big Jake on last night. Again. I know is that really hitting for any kind of an average. I think everybody else though, is like over three hundred the home run leader. If you take the combined met starting pitching offense of numbers and the combined numbers of center field would the met pitcher be better than the Mets center, fielder numbers. That's, that's a good point because. We'll get to the Mets coming up tonight's win last night, but Mickey Calloway did do something stupid in the process. So we'll talk about that. We'll talk to the great cliff Floyd who will join us Sweeney Murdy a chance to win. Yankee tickets? It is the midday show until Yankee baseball. And now a page from the diary of Flo. Dear diary, I got the brush off again. I don't get it. Is there something.

"I hope you will join us. We would love to see you there. It is an account of a ballgame that could only have happened forty years ago, this past Friday at this ballpark in that era with a colorful cast, what would become the highest scoring ballgame in a century final score in from Wrigley field. Philadelphia Twenty-three the cubs twenty two and of course, the game went extra innings Aaron Boone said this would be a great book even without my. From Henry Holt and company comes ten innings at Wrigley. The wildest ballgame ever with baseball on the brink ended author Kevin cook back with us on at random struck in baseball. Thanks so much for coming on. Kevin gradually. Get. How are you? I'm fine. The sub head in the book is titled baseball on the brink. Explain that to us. The game was really on the brink of becoming a game. We know today in nineteen seventy nine this is players were still skinny faith came in failure to Mets and Yankees fans that cubs slugger, six foot six two hundred ten times watching the game on YouTube. I think they have to be amazed at how seeing the players were weight training wasn't to happen again. It was before the steroids era. It was just at the dawn of metrics fantasy baseball came along today and Tony LaRussa cross down from Wrigley field with the white selects. Okay. Order computer printouts. That's right. It's also the first year that the Chicago Cubs really became a national brand. They go on their SuperStation WGN that. Yeah. And that's just the beginning of cable TV pumping enormous amount of money into the game. You know, in nineteen seventy nine there were about eight hundred thousand cable TV households in the country. Ten years later there will be fifty three million. Let's sit the game up. It's a three game mid week series between the three time National League defending initially east defending champion Phillies and the cubs who are sixteen in fifteen mostly, thanks to a sauce, schedule. That's true. And the cubs are expected to finish about fourth there, irascible manager or Franks said that other than his two stars Dave Kingman Bill Buckner, yet a bunch of guys who's, who's lack of power with matched by their lack of speed. They're expected to finish fourth or fifth as they will, and the Phillies are under pressure. They've just brought in Pete Rose that I stayed three agent ever at the unheard of number of eight hundred thousand dollars a year, he's supposed to leave the chilies to the World Series after they had won three straight nationally, east divisions. They're not going to get it done in that particular year. They're gonna have to wait one more year for the Phillies to get there. First. World Series championship, and it was the rubber game of three game series that comes when the first game seven to one in the Phillies had won the second game thirteen to nothing. And now here's game three no expectations. None at all except it, it's going to be an interesting game because the wind at Wrigley field, bro blowing out on this Thursday in may of seventy nine wins blown out eighteen miles an hour gusting to thirty miles an hour. Kingman and Smith. Our duelling for the National League lead in home runs. The game is gonna come down in extra innings to the only to your whole favors in the ballgame through suitor with his lethal brand new split finger pitch against my Schmidt. It's such an interesting game for the cast of characters as much as anything else, the Phillies have the highest payroll in the National League at four point nine million dollars. You mentioned that Pete is. They're having been signed as a free agent from his many years in Cincinnati Phillies with the highest payroll in the National League Kevin at four point nine million dollars. That's an end of the bench guy. Now. Sure. They've got they've got tug McGraw down there saying he waited for to come in and make the money grow, who's one of the most notable as you well know, players, there ever was said that he'd been waiting to buy really expensive truck. But after the money started going up after seventy nine in the early eighties, he said to heck with a truck, he's gonna get a plane. To get a sense of what goes on here in the first inning, the Philadelphia Phillies come up and score seven runs off of the starting pitcher really of the starting. Dennis lamp, right. So the starting pitchers Randy Lurs for Philadelphia densely for Chicago. It Phillies score seven in the top of the first the cubs get six in the bottom of the first bolt starting pitchers lurch, and lamp last one third of an inning and get this the Phillies bat around and Randy Lerch before he goes to the mound in the bottom of the first inning hits a home run. It's one of the many strange happened stances in this ball game by the time Lert goes to the mound with a seven run lead. He and his catcher Bob Boone. If both homered the only time that ever happened before they take the field the battery has as home run for the pitcher. And the catcher this is the game that one of the players then said it was the craziest game of all time. And then the second star. Exactly in the top of the third Philadelphia scores eight runs. So now it's fifteen to six after three, then the Phillies get to more in the top of the fourth, it's seventeen to six going to the bottom of the fourth inning. And then the cubs largely go to work over the next three innings. Well, the girl was sitting in that Phillies bullpen thinking this is ridiculous. They need to get me in there. I'm the closer. Get me in there. And put a stop to all this nonsense. Tug McGraw goes into ballgame. Promptly gives up a grand slam to dill Buckner and gives out five is run. Average is going from the low ones to fours in this ending. He, he gets a breather because his catcher boo comes out to the mound with a big smile on his face and the process to catch. What, what what's funny to you Boone said, well, I've got a three run Jack and you are in the deep blank. So that was using liberal up leaving trudging off amount to a to a standing ovation from the cubs fans and it gives them a little bow. This cat, the cubs get three in the bottom of the fourth seven in the bottom of the fifth. Three more in the bottom of the sixth. And they catch the Phillies who scored twenty two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with three run. So it's twenty two twenty two after eight innings. Neither team scores in the ninth. That's right. That was that was crazy. And I did talk to several fans who were there. One of whom thought, you know, we were getting the to expect with the wind blowing out the way, it was spec, three or four runs at least in it in a half any, but they were amused in the bleachers, at least in that scoreless inning by a trash truck going by labeling avenue, and it pushed into planes, so you definitely don't know what's going to happen in this ball game in the in the box score. Bill Buckner when four for seven with seven RBI's, Dave Kingman was next in the lineup. He went three for six six RBI's two guys with thirteen RBI's. That's right. And, and everybody was having a good day. At least at the plate that, that's a vote. The rosenbloom recalled this is ball game that you just got such a big file on your face. If you are hitter and you, you really hoping not to, to get your name called if you're waiting in the bullpen with their gale force winds throughout the game. The entire game or did down gusted as you know as they often do at Wrigley. So there were both came down, just short of the basket, of course, Wrigley when the wind blows in sometimes the bowl will will soar over the bleachers, and then come back into into outfielders club that wasn't happening this day. In fact, Lou Boudreau was going to game for WGN Chicago said to one of Kinmen balls was on its way to build walks. There were ten doubles two trips and there were eleven home runs. Three by three. By Dave Kingman and the Phillies wanted in the tenth inning had they win whether that comes down to the showdown between Bruce suitor and Smith. They had watched Smith again. And again after his first inning home run. There are fans at Wrigley shouting walking walking. He comes up with the nobody on the any now sued as fingertips was new and had been lethal. It said he certainly didn't expect to be walked with the giants winning around on first base. But he did he did wait for one to come up a little bit enough for him to launch yet another one into the wind, although trips game winning home. Run wasn't one of the ones that was wind assisting, and the game took four hours, three minutes played today it would be played, Kevin over two days. That's true. They've done with no with no lights at Wrigley. They would have been trying to feel their way around the diamond in the middle of the night. The. The book is called ten innings Wrigley. The wildest baseball game ever was played forty years ago this past two Friday, ten innings Wrigley. The wildest baseball game ever with baseball on the brink. It is from Kevin cook, and from Henry hold, and company, publishers, Kevin great job. Thank you for being on the show. Thanks Joe with you..

"That man the off seasons have been strange the last two office money while researchers messed up it's because there's not really a cab. So it gets too much too long. They need to have a different kind of structure, but guys have been waiting to get paid for so long. They do seven years of like indentured servitude. Don't really get paid. And then finally, it's their big free agent moment, they want all that money. Right. So they just need to change it around a little bit. They need to have a little bit. They need to have a different structure because right now players the best players in the game are having to recruit teams to sign them. Like, it's never a good deal to go give somebody a ten year contract. It's just they're they're too old. And it doesn't matter. How good they are in baseball. One guy doesn't make him much as much of a difference. And so like if they change it to where there was like, Maxine there are in the NBA where it was capped at five or six years, it'd be fine. The fascinating part to me. Is that the big guys haven't signed yet? No Harper nocona tenure deal. No Machado reminiscent. It doesn't seem like teams are going to be interested in doing that doesn't make sense. It's like the wrong move will end the ones that want to do. It are teams that are like, for example, the Chicago White Sox which aren't going to be close to competing yet. So if you're Bryce Harper. Yeah, you can get your money. But you're going to go team. That's not ready to roll just yet. Now Philadelphia was at least initially thought is one of those teams that was already on the rise. They played much better than people thought last year with a young team, and they might have been inclined to do it. But it doesn't even seem like they're all that inclined to do it. I mean in nam BA, we talk about teams having to recruit players like you gotta get good. You gotta have a core that you can build around. And then you add that superstar and feeds here we have to trade for him. It's like the opposite in baseball. You get really bad. And then you have to go get now. It's almost like there's taking baseball the cubs and astronauts. And then you have to clear out all your expensive veterans. So that you could make a couple of good signings. But a good team is not gonna be in the market for a ten year three hundred billion dollar contracts like the Yankees did that with Stanton. But not because they signed it. Right. They inherited it, and it's actually a pretty good deal right now. That's right balloons later. But it's still not going to be terrible value. Even later if he's still hitting home runs because that's what he's gonna do. He's always going to hit. He's not gonna hit for average. That's not him. I mean, he's a for like the old guy who's in there. He's like a Dave Kingman type date. You know, he's a hybrid to Dave Kingman and Dave Winfield, basically. That's what he is. But yeah, it's fascinating. Because the dodgers they were maybe I heard you in Mesa one day talking about maybe they do a five year deal, which would be a lot of money. Right. But he's not inclined to do that like Harper and Boris are not gonna do. I had Jeff passing on right after he signed with his VN. Basically we had him on immediately. And he said, no, it's not happening. Like, they are not going to do that like beg Scott bores is not going to allow his client to do that. You know? I don't I mean, I get it. And I don't get it to me. I'd make choices that are not always the most lucrative for a lot of my career. Did that because I just want to stay home in Los Angeles families here stay here. And I don't want to just move around and skip job to dub dub dub. Right. Just to take one more step up the ladder. And then eventually it worked up because we started UCLA that worked..

"Big ben brady aaron rodgers i mean they all had these weird paths were they didn't go to a football power out of high school or they were overlooked junior college so aaron judge is just in it and i think next wishers right it speaks to his work ethic in i've talked to you know my ex wife my wife about this is don't give kids too much too soon make him earn it give them a little chip on their shoulder and you know judge probably had doubters he's big and lumbering while to grow into his body he had a big strike zone for years and then some of its luck baseball now is rewarding homerun hitters the elderly dave kingman was a homerun hitter but he was always sort of niche like okay you get a bunch of home runs from dave kingman but he can't field can't run and he strikes out a ton but analytics now are telling you know steph curry doesn't played great defense but that 3point shot it's the most important thing in basketball so steph curry you build a team around him aaron judge we don't mind is strikeouts we just like his home runs let's build a team around him joe girardi in may gave aaron judge the ultimate compliment as a yankee he's a little bit like derek to me um scott smile all the time he loves to play the game um you know you always think that he's going to do the right thing on the field than off the feel when you look at him he's got a presence about him uh he plays the game to win all the time and that's the most important thing it's it's not about what you did that day and that's what i see from this kid and i seem doing things the right way on the field than off the field and that's the way dirk was as well when he was young so the cubs the dodgers the yankees in the red sox are all in the playoffs nationally wildcard tonight that's good for baseball it really is good for baseball i i i've said this before and i strongly believe it.
