Insurance companies drop some California homeowner policies
"In twenty seventeen California. Wildfires is cost insurance companies. Thirteen billion dollars. That's four billion more than the cost of the prior ten years combined in two thousand eighteen. The cost grew uh even higher. Dave Jones a former insurance commissioner of California says the skyrocketing costs affect homeowners when risks. Get too extreme team for insurance companies. They do two things one is. They raised the price of their product to reflect that risk and second they begin to write right less insurance for that risk so many. Californians now struggle to afford their premiums and in some cases insurance companies are refusing to renew homeowner policies policies. People can buy fire insurance from the state as a last resort but to cover other risks to a home they need to buy homeowners insurance on top of that so it's expensive and some lower income homeowners aren't going to be able to afford it. This is a tough job breaking bad news, and helping people start the recovery process. The wildfires have many Californians wondering if a spike in rates is inevitable under California law insurance companies have to justify any rate increase. Dave Jones is the California insurance Commissioner we have actuaries and rate analysts who scrutinized the rate filing, very carefully to make sure that the insurers have in fact justified their rate, they're seeking if they failed to justify it. Then we have the authority to say, no, we do say, no, and we will reduce the rate accordingly. And the system is set up to protect against a spike in rates after a disaster. We don't allow the insurance company to take the entirety of the catastrophic loss and jam it into next year's rates. Instead, those catastrophic losses are. Averaged with other claims over the last twenty years that results in smaller rate hikes spread out over the next couple of decades. Nonetheless Jones, says the trends are not good as ensures react to the massive losses from the wildfires..

"Commissioner are the first accounting of wildfire claims from the twenty eighteen fire season cake, UD's sukey Lewis joins us to talk about what they mean. And sukey so last year's wildfire season. We saw more than twelve billion in insured losses. What kind of totals are we seeing so far this year? Well, you know at eight hundred and forty five million that's close to a billion. So. Far, and that number is actually expected to grow. As more claims are filed and those losses include more than nine hundred homes and three hundred businesses across five counties insurance Commissioner Dave Jones who kind of gave this presentation today. Also pointed out the frightening speed of the delta fire, which is burning right now up in Shasta county. And he said the two thousand eighteen fire season is far from over. This is a reminder that Martha September October, November are months. In which sadly, historically, we've seen even worse. Fires more destructive fires and greater losses. Which means we need to redouble our efforts to get in front of this problem. And what about the availability of insurance? I'm wondering how much concern there is that some Californians won't even be able to get insurance. This is a really big concern. Especially in some areas of the state that have what's called high wildland fire risk role counties. Like Twala me county, but Jones says that insurers are actually reevaluating their risk in light of the tubs fire, for example, that burned not only in high risk areas. But in areas traditionally considered low risk like Coffey park. So are there any options for homeowners who are being declined or whose policies are not being renewed California does have the fair plan which is the insurer of last resort regardless of fire risk and so far only about thirty. Two thousand people have had to turn to that. But people are getting kicked off insurance is getting harder to find. And Jones says that also we can expect to see rates go up, and he was actually pushing for the legislature to kind of take up some legislative fixes to that this year, some of his proposals didn't even get taken up by the legislature and others were defeated by insurers. But he also pointed out that another thing homeowners can do is just be better prepared for when a wildfire hits and such really look at their policy understand what's covered, and what's not and also get estimates for the cost of home replacement because that cost can be really different than the market value of the home in sukey Jones also released a new report today about how climate change is impacting insurers. What did you say about that? So he had gone to researchers at the center for law energy and the environment at UC Berkeley law school and ask them to look at how. Climate change is impacting the insurance market and this report analyzes the stomach risks. The insurance companies are looking at due to climate change, and it really draws kind of a clear line between climate change the California drought and twenty-seven teams record-breaking fire season and the record breaking losses due to that and the montecito mudslides, which came right on the heels of that and explains how the insurance industry in particular is vulnerable to these really severe financial impacts due to property loss. But also, litigation and investment losses that are all associated with climate change. And the report even points out that insurance investment in fossil fuels is no longer such a good investment and traditional investments can of should move over to more renewable energies Jones says he plans to present the findings from this report at the governor's climate summit in San Francisco next week. Okay. Sukey thank you so much. Thank you Tara. It's cake UD.

"Insurance companies yeah it is incredible how much time medical professionals have to span or they have hired staff on the you know at the office to deal with this this guy from aetna he was by the way was medical director from march 2012 two february two thousand fifteen again doctor jay can l'onu met has been reported by cnn and elsewhere on the internet now it has a family practice in arcadia but here's the deal when he was asked about this he actually said quote at medic away he said he learned during the insurance company training process and of course put out a statement in said at a medical directors are trained review all available medical information klay medical records make an informed decision but our own insurance commissioner dave jones i've never interviewed dave jones before said to cnn quote it's hard to imagine that in an the that entire course in time there weren't any cases in which a decision about the denial of coverage ought to have been made by someone trained as a physician has posed some other licensed professional that's why we've contacted adna and acid that they provide us information about how they are making these claims in decisions in why we've open this investigation look this is confirms everything we've suspected why are you to declining stuff why i mean again with david lazarus on the other leaky comes on every tuesday right at eleven fifteen consumer confidential he's been a type one diabetic for a decade type one net there's no reversible there's no cure at this point he had to get a new insulin pump because the insulin pump manufacturer went out of business and they denied his claim it's like wait a you have to have this this is to continue living you're going to need this and they denied his claim so again these insurance companies it's just it's bad news all the way around i keep going back to this why do we need medicare for all as a base and then if you want to opt out because you want to get your own private insurance but you have to have some thing because he.

"This happened at a aetna and now california's insurance commissioner has launched an investigation into the provider after morning a four medical director admitted to this under oath california insurance commissioner dave jones said his office is looking at how widespread this practice is within aetna i'm not surprised by this at all i wonder if i mean every other insurance company probably does the same what i think we've all had the feeling sometimes that that's going on board were not covered for something that we we really confused about why would not be covered for that i've always notice that they always deny care no matter what at least once twice three times and then when you finally call and get reach somebody okay goal doing fine it's it's it's as if they had their first thing to do was deny thanking that you might just go away and wellpaid yoursel that's the easiest thing to do sure yet good with arzel a real i mean he admitted to this under oath the house the health insurance provider was not looking at records when deciding whether to approve or deny care think about how far reaching this can be in the way this is affected lives and i'm sure in some cases might have ruin lives financially you know where people had to start over maybe who i'm sure there there's so many scenarios were caning begin to to to name a mall as far as the horrible effect that this is hata insurance company is a financial institution and they're trying to make a prophet right sure yeah absolutely right we we cannot forget that don't way we do yeah they're they're just trying to make a living or ida yeah yeah but this admission is absolutely horrifying horrifying to me and yeah i think we've all kind of suspected at times that maybe that insurance companies may be i think what really feels to all of us that insurance.
