New York Giants beat Philadelphia Eagles 27-17
"Philadelphia eagles. Oh boy they lost to the new york giants twenty seven to seventeen. I do not. I do not want to obscure all of the giants accomplishments. They want us game. They looked impressive for for some stretches. So first of all the broadcast fox broadcasts as dave gettleman told broadcasters on friday that people keep telling him people of course if the giants are the best two and seventeen that they've ever seen
Breaking Down the New York Giants Initial Practice Squad
"Other thing going on with the giants roster is the shaping of their practice squad. We're not gonNA project who we think is going to be on the practice squad because as were recording it, we should receive some type of news by the end of the day Sunday, who is on the practice squad for some reason? You probably noticing this to the giants have been taking their time. To the fullest extreme to put in all this information, their fifty three man roster I think was announced. Ten or fifteen minutes after the required four o'clock deadline. Meanwhile, every other team had already gotten their stuff in before that chalk that up to Dave gettleman and Joe Judge trying to take their time in re be very detailed with it. They also this is official that we already talked about some of the claims but they have claimed offense tackle Jackson, Barton, wide receiver, Damian Rally, and then also safety Adrian Colbert they could either end up on the roster or be pushed to the practice squad. But the one thing that's worth noting and we're GONNA talk about the practice once official on another episode but it's worth noting that this season the practice squad is very. Very unique. It's bigger than it typically is and teams are going to be using it as a shuffling group that if someone gets sick, they can send them home quickly, sign them to come play right away they're gonNA travel. I would bet with most of if not all of these guys and have the bill availability to sign them immediately in the case of an emergency yet honestly to for me, that's kind of a step closer to what the practice squad should be anyway I I've never really liked the practice squad the way it has been where it's limited the guys who can be on it are very limited in the amount experience they can have and. They're really not protected at all. So any team can basically swipe a player off any other teams practice squad on very little notice. and. To me I I really do like these changes to the practice squad rules. The fact that it's bigger that the teams can keep more players around they don't have quite the same constraints on. Experience that we've seen in years past and the fact that they can promote guys from the practice squad to the active roster on basically ninety minutes notice. So I really like the flexibility that that gives teams and I'm sure we're going to be seeing teams take advantage of that this year probably in ways that the NFL isn't exactly planning on. And I wouldn't be surprised if there are certain aspects of this short-term practice squad for this season that are maybe tried to be translated into next year or come next CBS negotiation asked for by the players. So more players can stick around and be retained by their various teams it. It is a lot better like you said, Chris compared to way the way. That they've done it previously, it's better to have more guys if you can carry as many guys as they are allowed to this

"It's a weekend edition prior to the draft couple of things for you today. I we're going to play for you some clips from Dave cattlemen's Friday conference call his pre-draft conference call. We played for you some clips earlier in the week of a conference call in which John Dave Gentleman spoke about free agency and about some of the organizational changes about the structural changes the way the giants have had to do business because of the covert nineteen shutdown of all of the NFL offices So this was gettleman. Second availability of the week is second conference called this one specifically related to the giants in the NFL draft which is as we said which is coming up in a few days a few takeaways that I wanted to mention before we play those clips. First and foremost gettleman said that he would very seriously entertain the idea of trading down from number four. We know that something. That Dave gettleman in seven drafts has never done. This is a really good situation for the giants a good spot for the giants if someone wants to come up and get that number four pick. Obviously with four offensive tackles who are pretty equally graded on a wide variety of opinion as to. Who's number one and who's number four so you any pretty much? Any of those offensive tackles would be an upgrade for the giants over what they currently have on their offensive line so the giants are in a good spot there if someone does want to move up in Miami or the. La chargers possibly the Carolina Panthers personally. That's about as far as I see the giants moving down. Miami has the fifth pick chargers. Have the panthers have the seventh thick? I doubt that Dave gettleman who has said before that he really doesn't like to trade too far for the simple reason that that you you take yourself out of the mix for players that you might want so number seven Carolina's probably about as far as I think that the giants would go but I do believe that gettleman east serious about possibly moving that pick in picking up a An additional day to draft. Pick something that he can use to to continue to build out the A- the roster as the giants try to try to improve after winning just nine games the past two seasons. `nother thing that that I have been saying consistently and I said earlier in the week after after his Monday conference call. I'm more and more convinced all the time that the giants are going to go often to tackle with their first. Pick whether that's at number four whether it's a little bit lower down as long as one of those four guys is available. I think the giants are going to do that. Rather than take Clemson linebacker. Isiah Simmons Gettleman talked on Friday about the necessity of opening holes for saquon Barkley About Keeping Daniel Jones upright about the idea that he hasn't yet been able to To completely finish rebuilding this offensive. Line something. They walked in the door at the end of the two thousand seventeen season saying that he absolutely needed to do and He said he would just keep building it that they would keep throwing assets at in. He was asked if there was pressure and he said maybe it is a little bit of a pressure point to to fix this offensive line so I fully expect that the giants will go offensive tackle with their first overall. Pick whether that's going to be Tristan wharfs of Iowa generic wills of Alabama MCI Becton of Louisville. I couldn't really tell you at this point Daniel Jeremiah of NFL NETWORK. Highly respected draft analyst. Well-connected was said the other day during conference call that he is becoming more and more convinced that the pick will be jed rick wills of Alabama which makes a lot of sense when you think about the The giants connections to Alabama Joe Judge worked for Nick Sabin for several years Burton Burns. Who is now? The giants running running backs coach was that Alabama for several years was even. Was there even. The last couple of years was hired away from Alabama. Several giants coaches have connections to nick. Sabin so you you would expect that. The judge said the other day that he'll be relying on those college connections or has been for information on players on guys that he trusts so in gettleman talked about that on Friday about how helpful that's been. He talked about Burns. So you would have to think that if the giants are in a coin flip you know between two of the the offensive tackles. Let's say tristen worth sent. And Jed Rick. Wills if they're in a coin flip perhaps the the information the insight their trust in whatever information they're getting from Nick Sabin in the staff at Alabama about Jed Rick Wills in a positive or a negative manner might be the determining factor as to. What the giants do there? That would not Not Be surprised at all in the in the current environment where the giants can't hold pro day or can't go to pro days where the can't hold visits at the facility where they can't meet these players face to face so We'll see how that turns out but as I said I remain pretty much convinced that the giants will go offensive tackle with their first overall. Pick on just a couple of other things that I wanted to talk about. I did ask Dave on Friday about the fact that this draft is so much different. There's so much less contact with players in although the giants are able to face time they're able to to do some of those things remotely but they can't work these guys out. They can't look them in the eye. They can't bring them into the facility. That can't go to pro days in. See them move around on the field so it's a little bit different. I asked Dave. This draft had kind of an old school feel to it because of that and he agreed that it did he he basically said it feels a little bit like the Nineteen Seventies. You know which is back. Maybe when he first started out in the business when when. Nfl teams drafted players without any real contact with them perhaps only with the scouting report. Maybe with some information you know from the from the college coaches. I'm not sure how much film was available for them to watch back at that time in. Probably some from the Colleges. Maybe whatever they saw on television but they were drafting with a lot less information. So we'll see if that plays into the Plays into the giants hands here. We'll see if there if that helps them. You know with the veteran guy like gentleman who's who cut his teeth in the scouting world still considers himself a scout lot of veteran scouts on the giants staff. So we'll see if if the old school nature of this draft actually turns out to benefit the New York giants you know when they have to select on Thursday Friday and Saturday anyway giants fans. Let's do this. I have two things for you today. I have the some audio clips from gentleman's press conference for you those will be Those were cut up by Joe. Daley owner of the Chris and Joe. Show what you'll hear are the clips from Dave with transitions provided by Joe. We thank him for that. After the after the interview with Gettleman. You'll hear an interview that I did with Scott. Right of draft countdown. As we preview. A lot of of what may or may not happen next week in the draft the NFL draft is now less than a week away. In general manager. Dave gettleman spoke to the media yet again twice in one week as you had assume a major storyline for the giants is the possibility of them. Trading back with quarterback needy teams wanting to hop up to take to a low of Alabama or Justin. Herbert of Oregon puts the giants in a really good opportunity at four. Four one of those teams to trade up into that spot. The media of course ask questions about the giants possibility of trading and also how they might approach it. It's GonNa happen very soon. You know I'm GonNa make call and You know anybody that wants to say listening when we don't have much time can't hold around and I'd like to get the brims of fields in Clayton place before you get on the clock. That would be the best thing. We're GONNA have a mock draft on on Monday. I'm sure you were on that and Belene interesting to see how it works and again it's a matter of it's really the big pieces the giants of coordinated with a approach the draft. I'm sorry trade cross. You know have to veteran guys on so I think you'll be fine Obviously as you get a third round you'll have five minutes it's GonNa be tight To try to do that. So you know to try to trace back our trade up. So we're GonNa what's going to happen is GONNA force everybody to do is is through deals before they picked up. So let's say this thing and discussion. Someone calls one gene girls. Don't WANNA TRADE UP. They go make a deal off the clock. And then if the guy is they're teaming up then go to concentrate the straight but go. I think a lot of time in war rooms. There's always a possibility for a power struggle between coaches and the general manager as well as the scouting department. Dave gettleman was asked about who the final decision would come down to. If there wasn't an agreement on who to take at various pick cattleman squashed that possibility of him having the final decision but rather it being a New York giants decision collaborative collaborative. We're not you know. Have you know we talk it through? Just talk it through. You know this is my craft drafted. I had a problem. We don't big difference of opinion with a coach. We GOT DETROIT. We discussed about coming to a consensus. It's coming to a contest in just you know when I you know wrestling society to who gets the away. No that's it's a consensus collaboration. And that's that's what the situation can addressing. The offensive line is yet again a pressing issue for this giants roster and Dave gettleman spoke a ton about the tackle class also seeking versatility. Not Being a major concern. When drafting tackles certainly doesn't hurt it's I think I mentioned it on Monday. This tackles throughout the draft. Who I'll be lot of we call it. There is a lot of talent. There isn't a doubtful guys. Played both absolute free zone quite once. Certainly not all Aba Japanese it and then you know you you know you work through a look at yourself whether it's just is no different.

"I think for the human beings and It was one that the giants. I don't think ever really recover from in terms of you know the big picture now. From football perspective boroughs was a huge part of that offense we we we saw the year before we saw it in the first ten games or so the season You take him out of the lineup and you know down now that changes everything that changes everything and you know. Obviously you could sit here and say well to coach should should prepare for such like that because what if burs had sprained a knee or torn knee ligament or something like that they would. It would be next man up you know after seeing burruss. I think play through the injuries that he had in the Super Bowl. He had an ankle an injury that made him a Game Day. Decision in two thousand seven. They probably figure look. The Sky can overcome anything. He's a tough hombre. He can overcome anything and this was just one thing that obviously he couldn't overcome all right. Patty last thing on this topic you and I have talked over the years. A lot about the Coughlin Manning era and missed opportunities and looking back on it thinking that that there probably should have been more winning done whether whether we're talking about Super Bowl titles or or just playoff appearances and I just look back at this. As the biggest missed opportunity of the entire era I guessing you would agree with me on that. Oh absolutely absolutely this. That team that two thousand eighteen was probably the best team in that era. Hands Down no question. I'm not just talking about the record. I'm just talking about everything. The way everything fell into place the teeth and sit astride and continued the two thousand yard rushers Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward You know you just look at everything up until that point and you say this team. There's no way this team could have been stopped and unfortunately it took one you know poor decision to bring everything to a screeching halt and that team never recovered from it. And it's a damn shame because it really was in my opinion. The best team up the coughing manny era. All right. Hey Patty why don't you Why don't you tell folks a little bit about what you've got coming up at at locked on giants and over at the giants country Before I let you go sure. Giants go all-in with GM Dave Gettleman, who 'won't be an issue'
"The giants opted to part ways yesterday with head coach Pat Shurmur after two seasons and a nine twenty three record team though announced the GM Dave Gettleman will return for twenty twenty and also spearhead the search for new head coach here as gettleman earlier New York today before we go any further. I just wanted to be clear. Pat Shurmur as fine. A man as I've ever worked with there are many reasons whether New York football giants who've been the current state and I take my share of cup building. John said yesterday I have had Mrs however given where we started in December seventeen. We've made progress in many areas on an off the field. We're encouraged by and see as a sound foundation for the team to come. Look there have been Mrs. There've been some some hits. There would be those that argue. They have quarterback running the pieces in place rob making it. I would think desirable situation for a lot of head coaching candidates. Yeah I mean if you look at what they have there. You have a franchise quarterback who's very young so if you're offensive minded coach maybe you you'd take that as a positive. Look I have a very one of the top running running backs in the NFL right now. Very Explosive Young Guy. That's going to be on the team for a while. And you look at your quarterback I think the the hard part would be the GM staying so maybe he would have more influence on personnel decisions so that could be an issue but as far as just players their offense they have the keys. That are there for winning. But defensively they're going to have to rebuild on defense. I'm sorry Dan. The point was made yesterday that while they announce it ghetto ones returning and could be in a tough spot if there are potential candidates out there and talked about this that want more of a say you know. There's a new age here. Where head coaches make a lot of the decisions and now they're kind of backed into a corner feel like that's the case around the League Eh? You know whenever you're talking about the coaching hiring process. And you know let's say we're discussing the giants situation in your talking with other perhaps candidates or other head coaches from other teams teams about what's going on. They'll always say did he get hope. Is he getting full. Control getting power. It's always the first question people ask. Because that's what they want because we've seen what happens when a head coach. She doesn't feel like he's the one that can make the decisions and it becomes frustrating and it usually doesn't work out. I feel like the team that allow their coach to say and work in tandem with the GM GM those are the ones that usually are successful or the giants head. Coaching search has begun. They've made inquiries around the league will continue to watch
Report: Browns Request Permission To Interview Josh McDaniels About Head Coaching Vacancy
"Coaching news out there. If you haven't seen it this morning Pat Shurmur it has been let go from the New York giants but the giants have also let us know that Dave gettleman will remain as the GM so we know that that's happening. We're also starting starting to hear some of the names names of people that are being requested for interviews. Adam schefter pointed out the Cleveland. Browns have requested permission to interview a Josh mcdaniels. We knew that they've also requested permission to interview Ravens. Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman for their head coaching vacancy. So that's one there. They can take care of that interview now in fact because the ravens have a bye week it gets a little. It'll trickier with Josh mcdaniels. Who appears to be a hot candidate for several different teams? He is on the list of candidates for the giants. He's on the list of the the candidates for the the Browns as well as you and for the

"Off season the decisions made by Dave gettleman all of that controversial the decisions unpopular ones in in many ways what a lot of people saw as head scratchers all of that to be honest over the course of the off season has been kind of tiresome to talk about and and that's not really where I wanna go at this point but as we enter training camp I look at it and m I the only one who I don't think this giants team is is a championship contending team. I don't think they're gonNA make take a deep playoff run but am I the only one who is a little bit more optimistic than than many of the of the the naysayers about this team about the direction of this team at least as as we begin a new season. I don't think so ed I mean you gotTa look at baby steps for this team. You know look it took years for the team to fall into the into the sewer. It's GONNA take years for to come back. I mean very rarely does a team. Go from from worse too. I I mean I it's such a challenge but you know look you can look at last year and you could say that they came close and if it weren't for call here this and that they're they might have had a better record than what they had. They might have gone eight nate instead of five and eleven but I think you know the giants Dave Gettleman Pat Shurmur they had built a locker locker room that they feel is conducive to winning and they are optimistic about it and now you know it is up to the coaching staff to you know design schemes and plays and whatnot and put these players in a position to to capitalize on their talent so I am with you. I think there is reasonably optimistic. In terms of making baby steps forward. I don't see this team necessary sliding back unless they get ransacked by injuries injuries but I'm with you. I don't think this is a team that you know is going to go deep in the playoffs if it should qualify and I think I think they have an outside chance of being a wildcard but you know. I just don't think they're ready to make a run. Patty I was thinking and I did a post for big blue view that will actually hit a little bit <unk> a little bit later today as we record this <hes> on Tuesday morning and the the focus of of that piece is basically on progress for the two thousand nineteen giants Gettleman Pat Shurmur talked about the talked about building. They talked about going from three winds to five wins in all of the close losses forces and for me. I have a hard time saying okay. The giants have to hit X. number of victories to make progress and and that's for a couple of reasons that's because of the potential for an Eli Manning Daniel Jones transition transition and that's also because there's so much youth in so many new players on defense is there I mean how would you define what progress for this team. What might progress look like? Is it a number of wins or is it something other than that that you might look for. There's a couple of things I mean. Ultimately right. Wins are going to be the definitive measuring stick but I think the other thing you have to look at is. How many plays did they not make last year that they're now making this year? Are they better against the run. Are they able to get more pressure on the quarterback. Are they able to connect them. Were you know I don't know deep passes. <hes> are they able to to get more yards after contact. You know their little statistical things that you can say okay you know what the offense align was indeed better because you know they allowed X.. Number of pressures this year versus last year so there are a little tiny things you can look at those things will start to add up <hes> but ultimately you're right again. Wins and losses is is the bay measuring stick. The people going to look at and say you know. This team has progressed store. This team has regressed and I think we have probably talked about this before but entering training camp I think the defense to me is actually a bigger question than the offense simply because there's so many moving parts..
Scott Boras, Baseball And Murray discussed on CBS Sports Radio
"We were told here's quarterback class. Not that great. Because of the quarterbacks that we saw last year Mayfield. Darnold, Allen rose in Jackson. There was a lot more excitement last year with the quarterbacks this year, though for all this talk of the quarterbacks aren't that great? The quarterbacks always dominate the conversation that draft they do Murray goes one who could have predicted that five months ago. And Scott Boras told y'all all he's always going to play baseball baseball baseball. And the next thing, you know, Murray who got picked in the top ten of the baseball draft ends up going number one in the football draft. Then you have the giant surprising everyone taking January Jones at number six and a giant Vince every yesterday because I've been critical of the organization and been critical. Dave, Gettleman even. Before the draft. And they said well the rest of the draft wasn't terrible. And I explained it to them. That's nice player. Not a pass rusher though. The Andre Baker nice player cornerback out of Georgia. They got the edge rusher from Old Dominion. We'll see what he will do Julian love from Notre Dame. Okay. You could tell me they had a a nice draft.
Odell Beckham fires back at Giants GM's comments in Twitter tirade, says he's only a 'cancer' for a 'losing' team
"Yes. Odell Beckham junior says on Twitter that the giants are okay. With losing former giants receiver went on tweeting spree Monday night took offence to the perception that he's a cancer in the locker room. He also expressed his discontent with New York. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman coach, Pat Shurmur. He said, I guess the fine ask anyone of my teammates of who. I was as a teammate and a man and a person. Yes, I'm cancer to a place. That's okay. With losing. Because I wanna win that badge. Or absolutely correct. I have heard. Not that I have an in in the giants locker room. But I heard that there are a lot of people that lights Odell Beckham junior in that locker room and thought he was a good team
NFL Draft 2019: Notable Picks from Latest Expert Mock Drafts
"In reality isn't a difficult project. What is going to happen when we don't know in particular with this draft. We don't know what's going to happen. The number one pig came to get this thing over with. So he could really find out what's going on as opposed to all these different mock drafts that are out there. I'm right there with you. And I want to thank you for allowing me to come on the show. But it's a lot of group thing group three group out there. And that's the biggest thing that you see right now. It's a lot of my drafts. Everybody's just tired of becomes tired exercise. And we just wanna get it up to see the actually van happy. Now. How many have you done yourself, Jordan? I went back and looking I see one that was in January. Did you think that was your first one that was released pretty it's pretty close to what would be current stuff? Now, how many mock drafts have you come up with from January till now so I'll like to do one at the midway point before the combine. And then I do another one the week of the draft. So I'll be coming out with another one probably on Thursday morning. Okay. Now, how significant of a change would you have overall? He was certain things going to be changed. But the big the big pigs. You think there's going to be significant change from yours? The original ones. Now, I think there will be and I think it's going to start with calamari, and they both have those guys flip flop. Out in Nate both at the second big. And then we'll see what happens from there. Okay. So do you think your and we're talking about Jordan Reed and L draft staff writer for cover one host of the draft board podcast. You think for sure it is a foregone conclusion cliff Kingsbury in the Zona cardinals are going to draft collar with the number one pick. I don't wanna say it's a foregone conclusion because it at the same time last year everyone thought that Sam darnold was going to be the big to the Cleveland Browns just a year ago. So I think it's probably about seventy five percent chance of going to the cardinals. But we all know we just have to buckle up and see what happens during the drag because things could change at any moment. You mentioned some touched on before. Why does that keep happening years ago? It was Goff and Wenzel. They're not going to be top guys. Boom. What do you know team straight up? They go one to last year was all about darnold. Nobody knew Baker Mayfield gonna go number one. And then he did this year. It's all all about Murray, and even has to a certain degree where people were saying, oh has is going to be gone before. Let's say number six the giants pick. Now, all of a sudden, it sounds like not only may be there. But the giants may not even want them. They'll take Daniel Jones with number sakes. Why does that happen? Why are people so all over the place with quarterbacks in particular in these drafts leading up to the actual draft those quarterbacks other most important position, not only football. Sports period. It has nobody has a clue about football. They know exactly what the quarterback does and how they operate. So with that being said with these quarterbacks flopping over the past few months and even weeks, it just shows how much lack of infield that we do have. And we're not ineffective. So we're not supposed the curtain back and meet with these guys person or gets to know them personally. So we don't know what's going on in the mind that they've got them in or these other executives going on around the league, Jordan. I respect the honesty right there. You're right. Still fun. It's all about so fun to read about I get and we got to do it, and it's fun to project different things. But I guess the reality is without let's say, there's no Andrew luck there, and nobody knows for certain who's going number one without that. It's hard to project these things and the GM's arm can give anybody Dave Gettleman not gonna come out and tell Joe giant fan or whoever in the media what he's going to do it his pick. Why should he right? Jordan. Right. I mean, we saw Jon Gruden sin their whole scouting staff home. So it just shows you just how secretive these plans are and no team really wants their hands shown or what is going to be revealed on draft. They so I think we're gonna we're gonna see a while. Right. If I'm not sure exactly what the giants are going to do. But I think they're going to get a lot of backlash if they somehow don't find the quarterback future. Whether that's at six or at seventeen so let's get into some specifics here, we're talking about Jordan Reed NFL draft staff writer for cover one host of the draft board podcast. You mentioned you think the cardinals are going to take collar Murray with the number one pick. Do you think that's a mistake? I was talking before about how an organization can hire new head coach draft a quarterback in the first round last year guy. What was the best quarterback coming out less? Your Josh Rosen. And then a you later fire the head coach cliff kings, Mary you could certainly argue whether that was a good higher. Not. And I don't think it is. And now take collar Murray with the number one overall picks. Do you think will be good pick a good move for this car does organization? To keep that number one pick and take collar Murray. I think it would be and I say or I'll put it this way cliff Kingsbury, everyone likes to point out just how fancy as offense is and how well operated at Texas Tech. But it really didn't work like a lot of people were saying that it worked should have work and with cliff Kingsbury, he's probably gonna get gonna get one chance to be an NFL head coach and what better way into your guy in there. He has no ties to Josh Rosen. He was not there when the team drafted him last year, and he has he doesn't have a freelance relationship with him. But on the flip side with Colin Murray. We've seen him and his offense and everybody seems famous video circulating on. If cliff gains vary ever had the overall selection that he without question would say column, Mary so I think with Kyla Mary why such a great fit in this offense. If you think about all the great young quarterback that entered the league over the past few years and even going back to last year with Baker Mayfield. Sam Donald Josh Allen. Even Lamar Jackson to an extent all of them have have had one. Thing in common, and that's having the ability to create all script or being able to operate and when things break down, and that's exactly what column or is able to do. But with Josh Rosen and the state of Arizona Cardinals off it's a front. I think if they're able to select calamari he can kinda relaxed weakness that they have a front just because of the lack just because of the -bility he has to create scripts though, I think he would be a really good fit in Arizona. Interesting fascinated see a if they keep the big if they do in fact, take him and see what happens with Josh Rosen. And then obviously how it's going to pan out because Kingsbury Murray will be must watch to see how that works out for the cardinals. If in fact, they team up who's the team most likely to trade down from two or three there's a lot of rumors teams will to trade down on this. Good debt specially defensively. Do you see the Niners? Do you see the jets maybe trading out of their top spots here? I think the night is it gonna take if they're just because they haven't used need off of the they don't have anybody there. Now, they did trae for deport but they still need some help off of the age. I think they're sit along the interior would force Buckner Eric St. and now with Solomon Thomas transition inside. So I think they're fine on the interior but outside of D Ford. They don't have any other threat coming off the edge. So you plays both in there with that young up and coming into your your, and then you pair would be Ford. I think that would be a really good combination of front now. One thing that's a really interesting spot is the New York Jets at three because is very wide open out there that they wanna trade back just because they don't think there's a lot of value there at that. But they only have six peaks. So they wanna get back and maybe regain some of those recoup some of those that they had to trade for last year when they acquire them darnold. So maybe they wanna trade back and still get that edge rusher that they need even if Quinton Williams or Josh Allen is there. And maybe they have those guys graded similarly on their boards day. Okay. With trade him back. Maybe six or seven is still getting a guy like a month with or somebody of that nature. Now who would be the team most likely to trade up with the jets for number three. See that's the biggest problem because this similar to last year's draft is that there's no quarterback that teams wanna trade up for third spot like a Sam darnold from last year. So it takes two to party and with a trade. They don't have a partner right now. I think but maybe some team has Haskins on their board. Maybe like Cincinnati at eleven I could see them or Washington trading. Alway from fifteen up to three now with a lot of draft capital. But I'm just using example, we have teams that could straight up. So that overall selection, right? And that's why it's intriguing when you look at what the jets having that number three big rumor to be wanting to trade out of it. I mean, if they don't think that Alan is war that I don't know what they're thinking there. I wanna get more picks back. Maybe get good players. Let's say the do trade, in fact with the giants team that, you know, look, it was rumored last year that that could possibly happen is rumored again this year. Because the giants won't their quarterback. Do you think the giants need to trade up from six to get there the quarterback that they want? I know Gettleman throwing out a lot of smokescreens here. But ultimately, do you think has gains or Jones will be there at number six for the giants thing Jones definitely will be and odd just don't really know about Haskins right now. Because last week we saw that he was going to be a top five selection this week. They're saying, right. Fifteen. So there's a lot of rumors out there. And we really don't know. But if the giants won't be sure I think they should trade up to the third spot to secure their guy. Just because if easier guys go hitting trade up and get him and don't wait on anybody. Just in case team jumps you. And now you're gonna be stuck maybe reaching on through lock or even Daniel Jones who do you like better out of those? I'm assuming you like Murray the best out of the quarterbacks. Give me your take on Haskins Jones. So I have it Murray at the top. And then I have happiness, and then I have locked and then have Danny Jones right after that. And I'm a big fan of the top two guys in Haskins emerge. And I say that because they are a bit different as far as this guilty. I don't know we talked about earlier folks here. What I love about him is. Yes, he's a one year start.
Dave Gettleman: 'I'm Not Going to Force a Pick' for Giants' Needs in NFL Draft
"Going in. Dave Gettleman also spoke, of course, always talking about quarterbacks when you're talking about the New York Giants for being the quarterback club of of a team in this kind of a market back is a load is a mental load, and you've got really vet out the backgrounds of these guys just like being the head coach of this team is a load being a quarterback so load to more than just looking at a guys physical talent to buy his
NBA Draft 2019: Latest 1st-Round Order, Predictions
"And ladies and gentlemen, we have a new mock draft out Mel kiper Jr's three point. Oh is here with us. And we are looking forward to the draft. Mel will join us in just about an hour to talk about the new mock draft. But there have been some changes in the draft specifically one less quarterback. Now going in the first round then in mel's two point oh mock draft. So we have four in the two point oh mock draft with Daniel Jones from Duke rounding out of the last pick of the draft to the patriots in the first round of thirty two. There are only three quarterbacks now in the first round, according to mel's latest mock. And obviously a retirement might be a big reason why and the quarterbacks have changed as well. Right. As far as where they're they're going. Well, Cuyler he still has Tyler going number one derozan. Well in his last draft Cuyler going number thirteen to the dolphins. So now and this draft he hasn't going number one. He had. Dwayne Haskins going number six at a giant Kyle Murray. Going number thirteen to the to the dolphins. Drew lock going fifteen to the Redskins and Daniel Jones going thirty two to the patriots. So as you mentioned Daniel Jones now out of the first round, according to the latest mock draft by Mel kiper, just three quarterbacks Murray number one. The main says Dwayne Haskins at number six, and you start to hear reports that the giants may go defense was six and then was seventeen go quarterback. But right now twain Haskins at six and then drew lock sitting there at number thirteen for the dolphins. Does the only three quarterbacks in this latest first round. Yeah. Going to be very interesting because we know what the giants listen one thing. Dave Gettleman has made very clear he does not feel beholden to tell us his plan. And so I don't feel overly beholden to believe. A lot of what we're hearing coming out of the giants can't because if you've got a guy who's basic messages trust me, I got this. Well, then we understand he doesn't feel like he has to tell us the truth. So as we hear these things. Coming out. We also understand this time of year is about deception to an extent it's trying to manipulate the draft order trying to manipulate the opinions of certain players. So that you can try and put yourself in the best position to get the guys you ultimately want. So it makes it difficult to try and read the tea leaves it is although I have to say on cattlemans behalf. He said all of last spring saquon Barkley is a generational talent with the second overall pick. And that's where he went. Look, I think we all agreed. There has to be a quarterback in the giants future. Whether it's at six or seventeen trade now Cleveland, but it would not surprise me in the least if Dave Gettleman waited until the second or third round to take a quarterback this Dave Gettleman, he created that created, but he he made the term a more of a vernacular in the NFL draft hog molly's when he was the GM of the Carolina Panthers. He loves the big guys to hog mollies. And let's be honest. This draft is going to be decided outside of Kyla Murray. More than anything else about the big defensive lineman in this draft. The hog Molly is on the defensive side of the ball. So depending on your draft grades for your quarterbacks you could take one of those at six and then a quarterback at seventeen it all depends again on your on your draft great. If twain Haskins is highest on the board and draft grades. You don't pass that up. If you have a Dwayne Haskins drew lock. And whatever other quarterback equal in grades. You know, maybe use that seventeen pick baby can trade it up somehow to get one of those guys as I said, this always comes down to grades. Do. You have a choice amongst grades. Are you close enough in quarterbacks where if you don't get one you try and get the other? But we'll see we'll see, you know, one of the biggest changes in from the last two this for Mel was they had the patriots taken Daniel Jones a quarterback, and this one I serve Smith junior the tight end from Alabama going, and that would not be shocking at all you have really three out of the top tight end Hopkinson the kid from Iowa teammate, Noah Fant, and then Smith junior all three likely to go in the first round a three first round tight end to on the same team come on. And what would that tell you as we saw? The patriots jump into the first round and take a running back and Sony Michelle at the end of that. And now to see in the next year three tight ends going. We've talked about this. However, you want to split it. Last year were Quinton Nelson. Went in the top ten in the draft as an offensive guard. We saw roquan Smith going the top ten as a middle linebacker. The middle of the field is worthy. NFL is being built right now. And other teams are starting to catch up to what the patriots have done for years. The way that we've seen teams export that specific area and three tight ends in the first round would hammer that home not denying that. They are guys that are certainly probably more talented than usual tight end groups. We're used to seeing but it's also about value. It's why you see running back taking it to overall by the giants last year. I mean, the other thing is I think they're more interior linemen in this first round then quarterbacks right? Like, a not tackles guards and centers. There are more of those according to males latest mock than there are actual quarterbacks being taken which would be very unusual. So the top five in this new draft that Mel kiper put out is Kylie Murray. Number one of the cardinals Nick both the D N number two to the forty Niners. Number three. Josh Allen the outside backing backer pass rusher going to the jet number four Cornyn Williams. To the raiders and number five guy making a pretty big jump. Devon white going to Tampa Bay at five in the last mock draft he was number eleven to the Bengals now in mel's draft. He is sitting at number five number six twain Haskins seven Joon Taylor. The offense attack from Florida going to Jacksonville sweat, the D N going to the lions at eight Sean, Gary the D N going into the bills from Michigan and TJ Hopkinson. The tight end going to the Broncos at number ten. Here's here's what I wanted to talk to Mel about and one of the issues that I have laid on me big fella with with this draft comes, you know, some some point and one of them is there are few prospects in new first round projection who are making their debuts because of their combine performances. There are four guys who have jumped into mel's first round who weren't out there before again based on the combine combine performances. I don't understand that. I don't I don't understand that. If you wanna say. You looked at the combine to go back and look at tape of them. But to say, they're combine performance jumped them up that doesn't compute to me. Well, I think that's I think that's the assumption though, is because of their performance you went back and look and that. That's fair. That's why I want to ask them. How did this? Make you go back and study them more. Because if you're just basing things off the combine I got a real issue with that. Yeah. I I don't think you would do that or teams. But at the same time, you look at the positions of the majority of the players that would be involved in that. And I think this could be true for teams as well. It's interior offense. It is right. Three interior offensive linemen Terry McLaren the wide receiver, but when it comes to interior offensive lineman. You wanna talk about an area where the scouting grossly lags behind to actually great and overall draft. It's a difficult area for a lot of people to see and understand because you don't have the benefit of a lot of stats. You don't have the benefit of even the combine members necessarily always translating to production. So when those guys go and they paying and they flag in the model somewhere for what they do at the combine. And then you go back and spend some more time looking at a guy like Lindstrom who wasn't going to be a big name. He wasn't like, you know, Gary bradberry from North Carolina State won the Remington award this year. Like that guy was a stud Boston College was a middling. Okay. ACC team this year. So Lindstrom wasn't getting the credit. He deserved even being as good as he is. So you go back now, and even these NFL teams, maybe we're late to the party on some of these guys all of a sudden start giving them an extra. That's why I want to ask I just wanna make sure with Mel that because I'm just reading from the combine performance, and again, let's put a name. To those you mentioned McLaren the wide receiver who is one of the others. Chris Lynch reminder, you just mentioned from Boston College now. Number twenty one to Seattle Eric McCoy interior linemen going number twenty two to Baltimore. Right and the Garrett bradberry. The Senator from North Carolina State who is you mentioned one the Remington award is the best center in the country number thirty one to the LA Rams where they have an aging center, and John John Sullivan. And that was that was one of the things have been saying for the Rams the last couple of years that dynasties been built on the interior. If you land a guy like that good, Lord or you winning out it is. So we'll see how that plays out. Now, the one thing that I find interesting he he has drew lock the third quarterback Mel dozen his latest mock going thirteen in Miami. I'm telling you don't take out Denver at ten in Cincinnati of eleven in play for quarterbacks. I mean. Yeah. Denver made the play for Joe flacco. But John Elway has messed this up a couple of times with all due respect. I mean, that's just outside of getting Peyton Manning. He has not figured out the quarterback spot there at ten they might be in play for quarterback. And you have Andy Dalton with his situation with the Bengals and his contract situation. I, you know, I think that there's a really good chance that they could be in play with a quarterback there, by the way, by the way, Mel kiper Jr's mock draft not the biggest item related to the draft this week. That will have news for you guys. What more on that coming up later? This week
Dwayne Haskins Throws with Giants Attending Pro Day
"Lot of pro days going on this week twos. Day. A large giants contingent including defensive coordinator James Becher was at Alabama on Wednesday. The Ohio State pro day where Dwayne Haskins was of course, the center of attention was attended by another large contingent of giants representatives head coach Pat Shurmur couple of the scouts several of the assistant coaches there to check out, you know, the the many prospects, you know, that that attend Ohio State, and we're working out today. We heard that the giants also had had dinner on Tuesday night with Dwayne Haskins. I'm not sure what to read into all of that. I look at it. Like the giants are simply doing due diligence getting to know as much as they possibly can about all of these guys entering the draft. So and also on Thursday as I said coming up, the Missouri pro day withdrew lock. I would intimidate once again, a large contingent of giants representatives to be in Missouri to watch lock workout. So, you know, it's it's an interesting time. You think maybe there isn't a whole lot going on. You know, the the main part of free agency is done the draft is a few weeks away. But there are still things going on still lots of intrigue, you know. And you never know what's going to happen. You never know what Dave Gettleman might do. But an awful lot. You know, continuing to go on at this point in time.
Dwayne Haskins to Work Out for Raiders, Redskins, Giants, More
"Dwayne Haskins the giants who are being hilariously. Led by the GM. Dave Gettleman they met with Dwayne Haskins. They pick behind the Niners. So do the raiders the Broncos the dolphins and the football team from the greater Washington DC area. Those are teams that Dwayne that is being reported by NFL network where they are four teams that have meetings scheduled with Dwayne Haskins. So when we talk about the Niners in the draft who were sitting at number two. Moving back. You've mentioned this before Bob if there is a market out there for Dwayne Haskins. And they feel like they're teams like, you know, like the giants who are picking six or the raiders whatever to where they could prey on other teams desire to get Dwayne Haskins. Move back a little bit and make some things happen in that
Jaguars release Blake Bortles costing $16.5 million in dead cap space
"Blake Bortles was released by the Jaguars released. Not traded just dropped over sixteen million dead money counted against his team, and they still drop them. Now. Let's go back five years to the two thousand fourteen draft. Where was Bortles picked first round number three at the time. What did they say fantastic size NFL body type franchise caliber quarterback Mel kiper gave the Jaguars overall a for their draft that year and a Bleacher report was more cautious. They wrote Bortles is not nearly as ready to step in and play from day one as teddy Bridgewater is and he may not have the. Upside that Johnny Manziel does a him. Both Bridgewater and Manziel are currently looking for jobs Bridgewater, perhaps his third team Menzel just to job period. And now, so as Bortles all this proves is that there was no such thing as a guarantee in drafting a player and all the pre-draft type is just a lot of hot air designed to keep TV show sports, talk radio and scouting websites in clover year, round Bortles is exhibit a improving you don't know an NFL quarterback until he becomes an NFL quarterback five years ago is team used a top three pick five years later. He's cutting costing them
Giants are unlikely to franchise tag Landon Collins
"I will also say that I was in have been very much surprised over the past few days by what seems to be the giants willingness to allow Landon Collins to enter free agency Tuesday is the day when the giants have to decide whether or not to use the franchise tag on Collins to keep him from entering free agent. A week ago. I would have said that I thought it was pretty certain that the giants would do that. After listening to Dave Gettleman on Wednesday in Indianapolis. I'm not so sure I think that Gettleman talked a lot about distractions. He talked a lot about how upset players get when you use the tag on them. He talked an awful lot about eliminating distraction. He talked a lot about the financial ramifications of using the tag on Collins, and what that would do to the giants ability to improve their team and use their their Capri sources, you know, in free agency in other things. So to me, you know, I've been a little bit surprised over the past few months to be honest with you that there seems to be somewhat. Of disconnect between Collins in the giants. At least I have the impression that there is that they don't quite see things the same way, whether that's Collins value, whether that's the position in how he should be used you know on the field by defensive coordinator, James Becher. But I just don't think that the relationship between Collins and giants management is as healthy or as good as one would hope that it would be. A veteran scout told me that he thinks the consensus around the league at this point. Is that the giants will not tag Collins that they will allow him to test the free agent market. And at this point, I have to agree with that. It's you know, much to my surprises. I said I would not have felt that way a week ago. But I think that I think that Collins is going to be allowed to test the market, and we'll see what that does to the giants defense will see how that we'll see how all of that plays out soon enough.
NFL Rumors Mailbag: Kyler Murray, Justin Houston Trade
"Yeah. What this is shocking to me in the sense that when we were having this discussion about quarterback musical chairs in the fall. My thought had always been the Jags are going to draft a quarterback. And it still seems to me like the more prudent direction here is for them to move up for Golic Hoskins or Murray rather than giving Nick foles twenty million dollars a year when you're already over the cap, it just I just don't understand what if the answer is both. And what I mean by this is that Dave Gettleman came out and said the sin. I think this has the opportunity to be very dumb trend around the league. But did other came out and said, we'll work was the Kansas City mom's it's stupid way to think about which is adding a veteran die on a legitimate contract. And then the guy learning behind him. Now, I don't think that them bring in foles precludes them from taking quarterback in the first two rounds. I don't know if they bring in foles, obviously at a number like twenty they're not gonna trade up into the top five, but they could still draft a a significant future starter quarterback type guy. Now, I think is a couple of things we need to to sort of peel back on with the Kansas City model first of all not everybody's gonna be Patrick Mahomes. Second of all the infrastructure in Kansas City was so remarkably good perfect. They basically structure had Nagy and and read working with Smith and they assigned Mike kaffa to Patrick Mahomes. And so you. Had not only Mahomes working with Alex Smith every day working with read in in meetings. But also anytime he needed something explained to him. He basically had the quarterbacks coach at his disposal. The infrastructure and other places is not going to be like that. There aren't three really smart or four because out include Eric b enemy in that. There are not four really smart innovators in thirty one of the other teams in this league. So if you're going to try the Kansas City, Molly better have Kansas City coaches, and you'd better have talent like Patrick Mahomes need better have a leader like Alex Smith. I just think that was a unicorn if you want to replicate a good luck. It does not make sense to me to allocate your resources in that way. If you're going to sign Nick foles, the idea of drafting a quarterback in the first two rounds, you are team that is built to win at this very moment. That's why you're signing foles using a high level draft pick on a quarterback while also burning twenty million bucks on your starter that I I have no idea. Why teams think that's a good? It's the same thing. The cardinals last year paying Sam Bradford what they did. Wall dressing. Josh Rosen like just put him in just put him in. I it's Mahomes is such a different case in that team was on such a different part of where they wanted to go in their schedule. The Jacksonville Jaguars are there. But why would you tr what would you also draft the guy? I just don't understand that at all. I don't know teams plan specifically. But there are a lot of teams don't know what they're doing. No. There are a lot of towns lie they're doing I don't know if anybody's looked into the last the NFL's celebrating one hundred years and one of the Constance is like my field of dreams speech. The only constant is a lot of teams and have no idea what they're doing my favorite part about. This is gonna be what happens with the offensive line market the players in the pass rushing market or good enough that even with those top four guys off giving Dante Fowler big deal or Trey flowers Iansa. There are players I like in that group more than others. But I'm still okay. With a guy like trae flowers. Getting paid. But it's going to be amazing when the guy Daryl Williams is off the board and then Roger Sappho than teams like, well, we're the Donovan Smith winners five years sixty million.

"The jerseys and how different people to be angry at man. If if you were hoping we were going to talk through this entire process and come out with a positive outlook of where the giants are right now, I am sorry to disappoint you because that has not been the case. I feel like almost talking through this. I am less getting more depressed and I was, yeah, and I'll I'll be the first admit, I was not someone who was optimistic going into this season. I think I remember what we did preseason over unders at dig Lou view producer. There were four or five of us who did that and put the over under at six and a half. I think I was the only one who said. Disdain is gonna go under. So I, I will say I, I was not one of the optimism people going into the season, but even this has been so far below my expectations as much as this season might be kind of off the rails and depressing and underwhelming really like what is depressing and questionable is, is the possible future outlook of this team. I just I don't know if I trust the structure that's in place going forward to be what is able to to turn around this franchise, at least in the near term when Dave Gettleman was hired. Trust cattleman yell. The Panthers were in the Super Bowl two years ago. While look at the season's around that year, they were incredibly inconsistent and would bounce back and forth between having a pretty good winning season and a not great losing season. And that team was mostly mardi her knees yet. Again, remember omen came in and Cam Newton was already in place at quarterback who was already in place. The running backs were Jonathan Stewart, and I believe Mike Tober was all with already in place. Ryan cluele is already in places center. Greg Olsen was already in place a tight end, and he just added pieces to that roster fry. And and when you look at what this team is going to need to do at quarterback going forward, Kyle, Ida was the first quarterback, Dave Gettleman ever drafted while Leto was ghetto men's I quarterback and again, Dave Gettleman has never traded down in a draft as in those are just I don't think I don't know how you trust that going forward. I don't know how that was trusted to begin with. If if I'm being honest, but I'm not sure how you how you can see what has gone on right now and trust everything for the future and it especially the way Dave Dataman. Has tried to build this team right now. That's with his Haag mollies and through the running game is just it can meet just eliminate that word from our vocabulary. Yeah, we can, but but it's it's a way he's tried to build a team in an era where passing is at its highest, its most efficient. And really it's easiest in the history of the league. And this is now a team that's trying to build through through ground and pound and be a run first team it and and because of how bad they've been. They've been one of the most past heavy teams. But again, that wasn't the plan either and they're doing a narrow when the offense of linemen coming out of college, just they're trained to play a different game than what Dave Gettleman wants them to do. They very few schools even used three point, Steve. Chances for their offense of lineman, they're almost exclusively. No. Are peo- based spread option, spread the defense out. And Lyman only have to pass protect for two seconds and. The if you're going to build a ground and pound team, you need players that are really rare. If you say rare, you probably do have that with Barclay boat like how rare and is rare so much better than than everything else..

"Media network. I am damp Zuta. I am joined here by Chris flung, and we're getting ready to preview the giants week five game against the Carolina Panthers giants coming in at one and three. The Panthers had a weird week four by because for some reason, teams need rests after three weeks, but they come into this game two and one, Chris, you excited for this game also, yes, feel like if I don't say yes, it will wind up being an exciting game and I'll just feel stupid for not being excited. Yeah, I, I feel you with the hesitation there. Giants. Football has not been super fun to watch over the first four weeks of the season. Maybe that'll change this week what they're going to be going into Carolina. And a team. They're somewhat familiar with just because of how much back and forth. There's been between these two rosters over the past year. It has leave become almost running gag at this point that if you know once the giants hired, Dave Gettleman, Dave Gettleman hired Mike Shula, and then if you have Carolina Panthers on your resume, odds are you're going to wind up being a giant, oh, and special teams coordinator as well a at this point. I honestly think I've lost count of how many Panthers are or have been members of the giants between the first round of free agency, the late around the free agency, and then the waiver wire and everything. After final cut downs, it's been kinda crazy. Yeah, kind of felt like through training camp almost every other day there was some type of former panther getting cycled in or out just through that. Process. So we have Dave Gettleman former team, Dave gentleman's current team, and one of them is slightly better than the other one we could say. And that is not the one. Dave Gettleman is currently running. No, it. It's been an ugly, start it with the exception of their given Houston. It's been ugly start to the season for the giants. I suppose we could maybe put an exception for the Jacksonville game. That's a good team. They played them close, but yet will just say ugly. Yeah, that's that's a safe word for it. I think I definitely not pretty, uh, so it might not get much prettier in this game. A Carolina's again, only played three games, but in those games had been significantly better if we break it down here, Carolina is eighth in football outsiders Devia way. Again, that's their team efficiency metric, their six offense. A what? Surprising is the really twenty four th in defense, but their fourth and special teams, the giants come in twenty six indeedy away twenty-second on offense. Twenty eighth on defense in two thousand. I on special teams. So if you're just looking at those numbers across the board that is not going the giants way? No, not not. At all. The different on the special teams for me is probably the scariest because that no matter who they try that always seems to be a hold your breath moment. It's really amazing that not only it's not like they can't even find someone who can return kicks or pints. Well, it's, they've struggled to find people who can catch the ball, went there back. They're like, yeah, it's the venture just with the ball wending in the returners hands, which I feel like that shouldn't be staying. Yeah, it. It shouldn't be a hard bar to get. Above, but apparently that's that's where we are with giants returners here. I suppose we could take a moment. No recognize how much altered gross has has improved because he definitely has over last year. But if you're talking about your kicker, improving hits. Not good times. Yes, special teams has not been great and Dwayne Harris who was not really great during his giants. Tenure was just AFC special teams player of the week for Oakland. So apparently you get off the giants. He become against special teams player again..

Talk about a study you did way back when looking at the s. and, p. five hundred index which theoretically is a passive and we'll put a footnote on exactly what passive means you found from nineteen eighty. Nine to twenty seventeen the last year there was a full year of. Data available stocks editor the index underperform those that were kicked out by an average of twenty three percentage points over. The ensuing twelve months that's not a. Bad, gap in return. Oh my goodness It's amazing so so what are the implications of this and what does this mean about the stock picking acumen of the editors on the committee of. The SNP index who select the stocks that go into it I. Don't fault the index committee for the way they make. Choices they're under their clients are the people who licensed the index right and the people who licensed the index want. The index to include all the names, that. Are hot beloved and our. Embarrassing not to have in the index if there's a stock that has been, brutalized unloved dirt cheap and nobody wants said it's embarrassing to have it in the index of course they're gonna take those out now. What happens is two things firstly they announced a change and they announced. The date the change will take effect that gives the index funds a grace period in which to trade where they're. Going to move those stock prices and. Those, stocks will Still be in the index so they won't create a performance drag their everybody please front runner trades well there's a. The close the stocks added when. You, compare them with the discretionary deletions deletions that aren't. Related to corporate actions outperformed by nearly nine percent during that grace period so in index funds say we don't move stock prices with our trading that's that's rubbish They let other. People move it on their behalf and they could say oh look we haven't moved this well there's that and then there's also the simple fact that the ads beat the discretionary deletions by nine percent during a period of days well that's a big move so you. Also have. A part of that twenty three percent return, difference, in the. Subsequent year is simply mean reversion taking the price impact of the index funds. Back out and. Part of it is. Quite, simply the stocks editor extravagantly expensive on average and..

"You know you're going to pay to get them to come on wanna play in cleveland now bill the other thing i would say is i'm gonna turn back to john dorsey and also dave gettleman to make this point the nfl has to if you're a head coach or gm there's like three of them in the nfl that i think in truly execute their vision of roster building how they want to because three ality is like the leash is so ridiculously short and i'm sure there was more to it beyond just seasons didn't finish how the team one of them too but think about this dave gettleman was the general manager of a team that went fifteen and one and was the favourite in most people's is going into the super bowl and a year and a half later it was fired on dorsey helped the chiefs make it to the playoffs i believe in consecutive seasons fired last june like you can't tell me that if you're an nfl gm do you have to understand like you are making moves that even if you know there's a chance they won't necessarily work great over the long haul you have to do it in the in the short term to secure yourself it's like how these baseball contracts work you think people do you think the angel angel's thought that albert pools was going to be worth twenty seven point five million dollars in his age thirty eight or thirty nine season right david price to the red sox thirty two million dollars gimme a break smart baseball people knew that wasn't probably going to be the best spending of thirty plus million dollars in a season but in order to secure those players you gotta pay him huge numbers for the years thirty thirty one thirty two seasons so the browns are doing the same thing like pay these guys a ton of money up front in order to get them stick around for the long haul.

"But it is it's justification time right now we've got such a busy season the really the last time gm's have to get up in front and appease the masses we have the predraft press conferences or they're not going to tell us anything about their what can what they're going to do and then now the post draft press conferences where gm's and coaches feel compelled to go out here and justify picks that we all stand up in question in the crowd the new york giants the second overall pick in the draft pick that we all said going into the draft was going to be one that held a ton of weight hell the ton of power as far as what would happen after it and truth be told and ended up being the browns who had the two picks created so much of the quote unquote value in the first round by selecting players we didn't expect a bowl spots more on them later but dave gettleman did what he believed was right drafted saquon barkley number two overall and justified it in this way i really believe in in in value and saquon play around and he was too good to pass up very frankly so we made the pink i you know this with is devaluated of the running back started i you know i don't know we started i know genius who who's been preaching it i don't believe in it and you know we picked the consensus best player on on the bullet i tell you what that just sounds like the gm that's supposed to be new york dave gettleman the giants gm joining the michael cash on ninety eight seven espn in new york just sounds like allier giants fan dealing with jerry reese for the last however many years and really dealing with what is the sounds of silence as far as outside this is a definite jump in the other direction but this guy that fits in my mind he's sounds like he's he's groff he's a football guy it just makes sense is this more of what you guys are looking for.

"I mentioned this at the top with dave gettleman we're learning about dave gettleman the giants general manager as opposed to dave gettleman the carolina general manager what his words actually mean and i gotta tell you look at it the four picks the giants have made obviously the big one was saquon round one will hernandez the guard out of texas el paso lorenzo carter the edge pass rusher from georgia and bj hill the defensive tackle from nc state the one thing i'm learning about dave gettleman is he says what he says and he means what he says because you never got the impression that he was ever in love with any of these quarterbacks and that probably is a big part of the decision to not take a quarterback i think part of it is probably the belief in davis webb and one thing i hear from giant fans who wanted the quarterback is how can you believe in davis webb he didn't play last year that's not an indicator considering this brand new general manager and a brand new coaching staff i don't know what davis webb is going to be i have no idea i certainly can't sit here today and tell you davis webb is going to be nothing how would any of us know now would i have and this is the order of business on the barclay decision would i have drafted a quarterback at number two overall the answer is yes with all of that said and i've made that opinion clear for the last five months that i would use the lottery ticket to try to find my heirapparent eli manning and that doesn't mean i'm eliminating davis webb that doesn't mean i'm throwing him to the side i now have both of them on my roster and we'll see over the next couple of years how things develop but with that said the one thing i can't do right now i can't say it to a giant fan i can't tell you that even though i disagree and i would have gone quarterback i can't tell.

"They are putting a clock on dave gettleman and on pat shurmur because if you take a quarterback it's okay now when's the transition going to happen and these guys barely ever sit the guys who are taking that high right so like ones that can happen and when are you going to go through the rebuilt if you take a saquon barkley or you take a bradley chubb there well then you're saying we're all in on eli and we're creating we're creating an essence a two or three year window where we have to win now because we just passed on an opportunity to move to the next guy now what i'm hearing here it get them has been very i mean i've heard like closed blinds in that building in east rutherford right he's been quiet about it the one thing the people who know dave said to me and told me to pay attention to is that gold jacket comment he keeps making and that's actually real and that means something and that's why he may be unlikely to trae down and i remember talking to somebody a couple of days ago who said to me you know if you're paying attention to that there's one maybe two guys in this draft who fit that description right now and one of them's a guard so it's probably only one and that saquon barkley it's i i'm also starting to wonder bird if it doesn't even matter who the cleveland browns taken number one that unless somebody calls with something stupid and makes galman an offer that he can't refuse that he stays there and he takes barclay and he continues to try to build this football team hey look everybody's going nuts about the giants getting a quarterback they can very easily get a quarterback at the top of the second round or the top of the third round now they also have to third round picks that they can maneuver around with and if they want to slide back into the second to go grab somebody they can and it's interesting because when you're at the top of the draft and you and i built over this for a while even on this podcast.
