Bellwether no more? Ohio misses presidential pick for first time since 1960

"It's a bit of a history lists and when it comes to the presidential election in Ohio now that the media has declared Joe Biden, the presumptive winner of the presidential election, and if those numbers hold up, Ohio will have lost its status of being a bellwether state. 1960 election. The last election in which Ohio did not pick the winner of the Buckeye State going for Richard Nixon over John Kennedy that year, But starting in 1964, when Lyndon Johnson won, Ohio was picked a winner in every election since until now. "Steve is that legal? But I like the way that sounds really good, just like the Ohio State University. Some pant and yet, but I like the second and we're not going to try to trade market because, like in trouble or anyways So welcome board. Everybody Glad to have you listening this morning last week if you had a chance to listen, we had a really interesting discussion about Very fascinating project. It's a historic home, Steve. It's the Beckel project. I'm sure you're familiar with that. Oh, yeah, Mayor, And maybe I don't know and great, Big, nice old home 18 sixties when it was built, So we have a nice discussion about that. Last week. If you haven't missed that you could go to Dave fox radio dot com and there you can listen to that segment or any other ones we've done also, Steve, I mentioned last week that we did some videos on that. Michelle did she was the enter desire on that project. Oh, yeah, They're great. A nice little short clips sound like you got to sit down and watch for 15 minutes and hear somebody talk all about their life story before they actually get to the subject matter. You wanted to hear these air short and to the point So if you'd like to see those videos, they the easiest way I think finding right now is go to YouTube. Search for Dave Fox Design, build remodelers. Click on her channel. And there you, Khun! There will be listed because YouTube I don't know about you, Steve. But if I try to search for something in particular, sometimes it works. Sometimes there's just so much stuff on there. Yeah, there is a lot of hard to find. But if you go to our channel It's really easy to find him and they are short clips and they're good. I like him myself right to the point. One of the things weren't my put peace with YouTube. Is people getting on? You know, there's subject matter. You wanna learn something? We're talking about their dog and their cat. And I didn't feel like 1/3 of the way through the video that actually start talking about what you're listening for. That's exactly right. Yeah. Then we get right to it on them Exactly. Right to the point. Just like you do with your presentations right straight to the point. Check this up. OK, so Steve Dempsey's with us. He's our sales director and Been on a radio show a lot of times. I love you, sugar, You know, I love doing this. Good. So just turn you loose your microphone and I just sit back and well, I just keep talking. Okay? All right. So today we've got I think a really relevant subject because It's summertime in Ohio and outdoors is a big deal. Right now. It's a huge deal. In fact, I just came driving from an appointment and I just saw all these outside projects going on my way back up by whoever has wars. Bring nice by whoever is with him. Yes. So we have a lot of interest in that, don't we? Now throw project. Oh, yeah. I mean, we do a lot of good, amazing projects, and actually, a lot of people come to ask for the The kind of unique ones too. I'm thinking we're a couple you worked on recently that were really stunning and very unique and interesting in an expansive too. Oh, yeah. The one large project that worked on recently It was out in the Muirfield area was an outdoor lanai area turned out. Amazing. Yeah, they have those clients out there. Yeah. Very cool. So if any of our listeners this morning are thinking about outdoor living, or maybe adding a patio or gosh, Okay, if you say the term outdoor living, Steve, what's that mean to you? What are all the different facets of well Outdoor living. You know, you can really kind really kind of facilitates anything that you would do. I like to think of his outdoor experience with your family where you're outside. It's either patio a deck. It can incorporate pool and landscaping, giving you basically the outdoor space to use it for entertainment and family fun, And that's really the goal of it. You know, I stride by so many homes that you look at the other house are nice and really try. You could drive by the back of all that. There's just Nothing back. There may be a little four by four deck with some steps, and it's such wasted space to just be so much more you can do with it and doesn't have to be a soccer field or anything and just be like amazing spaces. Entertaining. So you mentioned pools and we had a discussion about that and our managers meeting I think last week about how pool builders are so backed up Lead time is so far out there. It's well covered. 19 hasn't done us any favours. It's our fair went out there. I understand, but You get trapped in your home pools or close kids. They're going crazy, and the first thing that really came to everyone's mind was worse by pool. The pool and They were busy before and now they're just slammed. I mean, I'm sure there's probably out of pool Cos starting up right now, just because it s so very early this year before it was getting warm out my Daughter and son in law order, eh? Above surface pool because Eight kids all together. They away before you got warm. And they got the last one available. Oh, hi, Pet. So, I mean, I don't know if anybody could even buy a pool anywhere right now. No, you came and get you can get the inflatable ones. Why don't we start building some would that we could just start building anything about a week will build anything that you want. Okay? I don't think we're gonna be building pools. So anyhow, if anyone's thinking about a pool in the outdoor experience just know that it might be two years before you get it. Yeah, Realistically. Yeah. If you're looking at doing pool we've got to think long term is what it will actually go in. So yeah. But it's kind of funny How some things like that are so mean material availability now is getting to be kind of a crisis. Yeah, is a crisis. There's You know, with borders, perhaps closed where we're getting products in for our original products. Like if you have a pool that have liners and liners coming in out of China, or even somewhere East Asia, you know It might take forever to just get that product and you might be gives the other parts of peace, which would be to get that and that's what's just killing a lot of the production over here, you know, So unfortunately, what we're facing is higher pricing and longer lead times. That's correct. Yeah. And it's a shame, but it's also interesting that the demand for re mom ING has just skyrocketed since early June, probably end of May. Oh, yeah. Early June it a skyrocketed. Bigger than we've ever seen it. Yeah. I mean, it's just well, I mean, how much time has everyone been spending in their homes? You know, I mean, even me personally, just way more than I typically didn't even my family, my kids. Of course, my kids have their own list of stuff. They want house now, so it's It's really come down to that. People spend more time at home that typically we're traveling, and I think that just drives home the point that your home is your castle and its worries your family and you spend a lot of time and If you can't spend so much time elsewhere, you know, people want their homes. Nice. Their outdoor space is nice, and they're investing a lot of money. And, yeah, I had to go to clients I met. They said they're like, Hey, well. We were going to take a spring break trip, and then we're going to take a trip in the summer. The trio is due and we realised we're not taking either one, you know, and Of money that they saved from both those trips. They're like, well, Look sorry about Karen. Like, hey, let's.

"And guys who spin pretty wet month but it's nice to have things getting a little better now weather wise last week I was talking to Greg rice we were talking about the building up and structural support may be required for that can the differences between building out and building up so if you happen to miss that show you can go to Dave fox radio dot com and there you can actually listen to that show or any of our previously broadcast shows so stay fox radio dot com in love to have you invites you to go there today I've got Steve Dempsey with me Steve thanks for being here let me near here yep so Steve our sales director and Steve you are the one that deals with a lot of questions from homeowners about remodeling so today we want you to answer every single question they have ever had I will answer I Ryszard action that I struggle and you got to think of all of them to I pretty much know what yeah I think so yep so well no we never know mall because in remodeling we always run into things that we've never experienced before right fair enough yeah okay that's what's fun about this business so appreciably tuning in and hope you know might have a little fun with us as we have fun together because we just have a fun time working here only I absolutely love it yeah we have a great camaraderie and just a good team of people and we all enjoy working together yeah there a lot it was really fun to work with only four and go to work every day yep three more and if you go to our website and look at all of our employee photos you'll just see how happy everybody is is kind of cool because they've got little animation there we see each of the photos the photos on our website are great for seeing all the employees in a much fun they have here Dave fox okay no more fun we're going to get to work now about back to work at the all right so again thanks for tuning in today we really do want to talk about questions homeowners have about remodeling and I'm sure that here we are getting closer to summer and it's usually you know spring and also falls when people are thinking about doing work to their homes and I'm sure there's a lot of people it has been a lot of time in your home that are anxious to get some stuff done so we are having a lot of those people call us and ask about remodeling or with their particular scenario someone needs that they've really recognize that their family has now that they've been in the house a lot more than before and it's just brought to light you know maybe some of the shortcomings of homes and how they could be improved or if maybe some of you I think about the wonderful projects we've done in the past even now all these homeowners have had great living spaces to enjoy father spending more time at home yeah they they all the projects that we worked over the years that they really I've been trying to find the best way to make their house a place that they can just enjoy and love time and not have to go to the heartache of moving and stuff like that yeah so that's why we're here so Steve when people come to us some people are just very knowledgeable and maybe they've been through Molly before or they really researched a lot they know a lot of what they wanna do they know a lot of the products out there they have done studying and kind of know what the process is like so that's one end of the spectrum the on the other end is people have never been through all of them before they have so many questions and they're unsure about a lot of stuff they're obviously very concerned about the company they go with scissors somebody they can trust somebody that will help them through all the unknowns because if they're not experienced at this you know they're going to be trusting someone to make their help them make the right decisions that's right I mean yeah dressed as a big part of any decision you make as far as the model you choose yeah and that trust I think involves working with somebody that's really looking out for their best interests yeah actually the it's one of the first things they can ask about remodeler you know as you know how long they've been doing work and you know if they're gonna be doing work for you are they can't listen to what you're saying you know they are they can be like you said looking out for their best interests that's going to come down to really come and say listen the garage has been a lot more time listening than talking yeah as we said on the radio sure yeah and taking the stings that the homeowner says and being able to kind of interpolate in a get them the solution they really want even if they can't articulate well right because I mean they're actually coming to you unhappy the new diet now it's my job to make them happy yeah which isn't always easy thing to do gotta get inside their minds a little bit okay so how do we do that with what's are some of the initial questions you get from people well the list is long actually that people are typically asking usually when people are calling you know they really can't want to get done they greedy now how much is my side project and the cost and how how long does it take to do it and then usually right after those questions are why is it costs so much then why is it takes a long so it's got into question well you didn't answer them right well the one thing is is that you know a lot of it comes down to the homeowners just like said not not really kind of knowing what it's like and why it takes so long to do certain things here that maybe they built a home which you can take anywhere from six to eight months to build sometimes longer but you know control home but you know when you work with a remodeling project remodeling projects are much different imali projects has people living in the home and the contractor being limited on the amount of time they can be in that home a certain amount of time during the day and during the the weekend on the weekends so and keeping that balance mmhm and you know going into the questions that a lot of rumors get when I talk to about how long to prod my project and take you take a a a simple kitchen project you know how long while hello kitchen project take they'll take almost any range anywhere from nine to twelve weeks sometimes they can take longer how customary and when they asked that question that's always followed up white's takes a long and the one real main reason being is that you live in now is that the general contractors and subcontractors people actually working at the come into your home if the terror set up their equipment every single day they have to you know the house he would take a lunch with us that way for you to get out you know if you're there in the home they can't get there at six o'clock in the morning they had a way to like a reasonable time maybe seven thirty or eight and that the set up then they course take lunches and stuff like that too and then there but also at the clean up and tear down and put stuff away and I chops into maybe three hours of regular work day so again if you have any hour work day they only have five hours a day to work on your home every single day actually do physical work now for doing a new home model number nobody living there in get there at six thirty and bang away until you know five thirty six o'clock at night nobody's gonna there was a marked as sent away for modeling industry yep we're actually invading people's privacy we're going right into their homes where they live and that's a whole different scenario which means it's a different ballgame for hiring employees that work in those situations to yeah yeah I can't I just can't randomly bring in somebody that scat bad hygiene but has a foul mouth or no work around people their kids and something people that we want people they can trust and feel comfortable in your home exactly while you're perhaps I've been home there yourself himself yes mazing how may times we're working for people that might be here on long vacation or maybe their jobs taken them to a different part of the country or overseas or something and so we'll be working in the space that we can have all the electronic communications so we can keep them updated lots of like term communication now yeah that's for sure more than we ever dreamed of but that's the way you are so again got Steve Dempsey with me he's our sales director and Steve you've been on show number times we've talked a lot of the or the sales side of things and working with clients through issues so the next thing when I want to talk some about really kind what the process is and how it how one of our design consultants would help a client work through some scenarios in some of the questions that they would come up with and some of the solutions that we typically offer them so I'm Gary demi's with the foxes idle rollers and we will be back here right after the break from yeah.

"How we fish the collar and mark yes this is I gotta get that terminology right by Dave fox design build remodelers and this morning by green scapes to we're happy to be here thank you great okay so market Adam we work with you guys a lot lot of different projects in the scope of blows projects can vary quite dramatically candid it does you know we've we've helped you guys out with just a little bit of lawn repair and fixing a bad and you know we've worked on some pretty large outdoor projects together so it's whatever the client wants you know we're we're here to help yeah this seems like landscaping hello you pry have a better perspective on this but let's say over the last twenty years how much of an importance you think landscape has played in residential design objects skews me it's a tremendous change DO are owner bill when he started he said the most of their projects were small plantings you know some screening some trees and then as patios and walls and everything outside that you can do or people want to expand their their living space outside you know is just become more and more construction oriented where you know for a bigger project we're hiring an electrician to come and in a plumber you know talk of gas lines and and work with us on these more intricate project so it's come from just you know having a truck in a trailer and some shovels and planning some plants to becoming sort of a outdoor general contractor yeah so the industry's mature a lot I think there's just so many more creative products on the market to set Adam you probably being in the younger generation probably here people like you that are coming up with all these ideas they'll you know if there's somebody could be done better you know there's there's money to be made so you know even to the extent that we see a lot of companies mimicking each other you know once they have something that people seem to like and sells well it's a very competitive landscape material market you know yeah it is really taking off we get people calling all the time wanting to to show us what they can do for us and what they've got and sometimes it's hard to to make up your mind in submission.

"Little more thought and the amount of work that they wanted to have. Done. They wanted to work with a reputable design build company. Okay. So in the call, Dave FOX design builder mothers. Yeah. And you know, they initially wanted to gather information, you know, they're just starting to know what it takes to do a project. Like, there's you know, when I first walked in we kind of walked towards the kitchen and and. The wife was really. The first thing she pointed out was this island's way too small, you know, we kind of use it as a dumping ground of stuff, whether it's purse, keys, etc. And they really needed more space to to kind of spread out and and not only do cooking. But she also works out of her home. Kendra is is a entrepreneur, and she works lot from home. And and Hayes does most of the cooking. But they both cook as well. Great. So they needed more room more space. Yep. And sometimes a lot of times that is the case where people might have. A smaller kitchen area or island, whatever the case need more room for that. And then the challenge becomes whereas the room come from do we take walls out and kind of double up on the space between the kitchen and the dining room longtime. You can gain some space deficiencies that way with a wall gone. Sometimes people expand out the back, you know, add six eight ten feet out the back and expand that way. So how do these folks find that extra space? So as most newer homes are somewhat compartmentalized. And the front room was designed originally as a dining room like most homes have next to their kitchens, but they really do all their eating in there eating kitchen area..

"Replacement window or it's all new house or even some commercial projects. They get to see all the ins and outs, and I've always enjoyed the remodeling and construction industry itself. So it it's great to see the other side of the business as well. And what's of unique about your role? There is that you knew or got to know pretty much all the companies around here. Right. Oh, yeah. Builders remodelers commercial builders and real to kind of see inside how Iran things so we got you here install their secrets. No. But it kind of gives you an interesting perspective on things, I think so we're excited to have you with Dave FOX design Bill remodelers working with our clients and servicing their needs. So in terms of windows. If a lot of our listeners today, maybe they're in a scenario where they're in an older home, and they're kind of fighting with their windows, and maybe not sure which route to go what are some of the things they should think about if they're contemplating changing their windows. I think first and foremost, there's a lot of things I think about. Anywhere from how long are going to be in the house. They want to put a lot of money into the house if it's a a year or two and they're going to be gone. Maybe that's not an expense. They wanna put into it. But at the same time after windows are really bad and they trying to sell the house. They're going to have to have new windows. So. There's so many different materials for windows anymore. From would windows Divino fiberglass aluminum windows as well? So from two features and options, energy efficiency. So much goes on to win a lot of think about you mentioned aluminum I've been in this business a long time. And it goes back to the days where there were no vinyl replacement windows. It was all Lumina m-. And I it was the Lumina windows without a thermal break. And then the big deal was, hey, here's aluminum with a thermal break because obviously metal transmits colds like crazy in these aluminum frames would frost up in the winter. So people are taking would premium since hashes out and put these aluminum windows in causing a bunch more problems making it worse than it was a start putting an ice cube in a house. They didn't have to.

"Six ten WTVN. Good morning. You listen to this day FOX overwhelming show. Gary demons really with you the Sunday morning and today we are talking about a youth remodeling career day that we are going to be having at Dave FOX right here in Columbus. We're going to have about sixty students there, right, Jamie. That's right. And you're gonna cook for all these students. They have some deed for Leno. I'm not cooking for them. They will have something to eat for lunch. But I will not be my food. But yeah, so we're going to and actually I'm really excited about the lunch portion of the day oddly enough, not just because the food. The best part of a working man's day. Jamine true or women's but we are going to have speakers during the lunch. Several of our our staff will be speaking. And and it should be really inspirational for the students to just really see full circle the career paths that are individuals have taken and the different routes. They've gone Craig one of our carpenters always comes to mind. He actually went all the way through architecture school and sat at a desk and realized he's not cut out to sit at a desk, and is now one of our carpenters, basically doing the same things, but instead of sitting at a desk drying, it he's out in the field building it, and I think that that's just exactly why we're doing this. So that someone doesn't lose all that time and money spent in architecture school if they're destined to be in the field working with their hands. But if he would have been exposed to that he might have learned that prior to all of that investment. And so that's part of the reason why we're doing this. But I think all of them just have very unique stories Devon one of our other carpenters. He is nineteen he's young and he is new to the industry, and he started with us right out of high school. He started as a kind of a mentorship coming to the office and learning about what we did. And and he's been a great addition. And just I think the students hearing from him someone so close in age and really relatable. And just seeing how far he's come and the career path that he's already started under twenty and he's on a path. And it's a great one. I think is just very exciting for them to be able to see and hear I know I would have loved that. I when I was in high school, I took a business class or I forget what it was technically called. But they for the first time we had a class that told you about credit cards, and your and debt and getting a mortgage and all this stuff that terrified me. And I was like. How are we going to pay for any? And I went home that day from school. And I was like mom, I we need to sit down I need budget. I need I like in freaked me out, and it has stuck with me ever since. And I will never forget that teacher in that class because it was just such an experience that he went through kind of life, and like, okay, if this is your salary, and you break it out like this. And I was like, oh, no, I read it. Just scared me. I was like, oh, no. How does this all work? I didn't know how to do all that. And but it was I'm so fortunate that I learned that in high school opposed to after I graduated from college and actually had to do it. Because that would have been scary. But I think anything you can learn younger get exposed to younger the better..

"You can hear a podcast about. I'm sure. So this morning. We have interesting show. We're gonna be talking about a youth remodeling career day that we're going to have right at our own Dave FOX remodeling location here in Columbus. So I've got Jamie with me, Jamie. Everybody knows Jamie. Hi, jamie. Hi, everyone. And we also have an with us in. You are from Westerville schools, and I would like you to tell people a little bit about your background. And what you do at Westerville schools in in. Why you're here today? Well, my official title is really long. It's a career tech in college readiness coordinator. And I have the exciting opportunity to work with our middle schools and high schools to develop career pathways for our students and our career pathways allow Westerville students to try out different career options before they leave high school with the idea that we want them graduating towards a pathway not just excited to graduate from high school. What's unique about our pathways? Students can come in. In and out of those pathways. They're not committing to a program where they might go to a career center to commit to a two year program. So they have opportunity to try out elective courses. And find out what they like or don't like. So he and his this particular interests of yours is that way is or how did this happen with your life? Yeah. I've started out a social studies teacher and had opportunity in reynoldsburg to develop a career academies of the large high school broke out in force small schools, and I had opportunity to work with a group in developing the health sciences human services academy and the opportunity in Westerville opened up to develop career pathways, and I had opportunity not to work with just one high school, but several schools in developing those career opportunities for students. Yeah. It sounds fascinating. But you have fun with it. It is. It's the best job. I love going to work every day. Well, that's really cool things for kids, and I get to work with an amazing staff. Yeah. That's got to be a lot of fun because you really having a lot of influence over the lives of of all the students that you're working with. Yeah. Mhm find a career that.

"Listen to last week's broadcasts or any others that we've done in the past and as always, we love to. Hear from you you can Email us if you want to communicate to info at Dave FOX dot com can, the Email addresses info Dave FOX dot com and if you have any, thoughts forest, ideas comments, questions you name it. We love to hear. From you So again thanks for tuning in today we're gonna be talking about. Cabinetry and I have with me Dave Norton could, to have you here Dave thanks Gary and Dave you've been in this industry for a. Long time I both right, yes we go way. Back to when you were using, chiseled hammers, and, stones, the big stuff. I think or somewhere around there Right it seems like And when you're. The subject of cabinets, is really pretty broad because there's not just a good better and best in cabinetry I mean you've got. Different classifications of candidates you have like stock cabinetry which would be typically builder builder line can't. Arrest Yeah so they're Bill just like anybody new building a new home prices super sensitive on. Everything because you. Put it all together you get this big price takes so people use the. What to keep their costs in, order and, that usually means you using stock cabinetry for your kitchen because has, a huge influence on costs. And. Builders obviously they're competing so they, want they, don't want, to be paying a lot for these. Items it's amazing because I've, seen him you know eight hundred, thousand dollar homes with a. Forty dollar. Kitchen sink in like doesn't make any sense great so you've got the stock cabinetry you know mayor. Latte risk to craft some of those brands so there in the book if they're not in a book you're not getting. It right, that's correct in the they come. In three inch increments or, whatever sizes and have certain. Different themes and profiles And then you kind of move. So there's a good better, best in the stock cabinet lines, and then you move into. Semi custom. Where now we're allowing of some customization capabilities and probably more broad selection of door styles right yes Finishes characteristics of of semi custom be well as the. Name? Implies There is some customization available depending, on the manufacturer it's going to Might be in a with, and they might limit you to modifying with spy one inch. Increments they, might not modify heights or they might or modify depths generally speaking a, semi custom company will not allow, you? To do custom door styles customer would species, or custom finishes right so they're going to have, some customization available but they put parameters, limits. On that because again that's helping them be more cost competitive correct so they're serving a market where you got a. Broader selection of. Door styles and finishes in, to a certain level. There's customization available and then in, that stem, I. Semi custom rains you have a good better. Best you know absolutely and then you step into the fully. Custom so describe To our. Clients kind of..
