Deeper Digs in Rock: Dave Davies of The Kinks
What can you add about a living legend? Tune in to find out as Dave Davies of The Kinks speaks to the Rock N Roll Archaeologist about his new album, ‘Decade’ out October 12th, 2018, the family affair with some of his children’s musical endeavors and of course possible comings and goings with brother Ray as we scratch up something news worthy. A Kinks reunion? Dave is the lead guitarist of the The Kinks. One of the most influential groups to come out of the original British invasion of the 1960’s. The outlier and maybe the coolest of the big four, Beatles, Stones, Who and without doubt now The Kinks. He alone created the sound of distortion that filled the fantasies of young guitarists the world over. One of those singular moments in history that never gets tiring in the retelling. He also takes up the lead vocal once in awhile in the band and has had several solo albums through the years, his latest a reworking of material originally recorded in the 1970’s. A lot to pack in an hour! ExtraTime Radio: Charlie Davies (NE Revolution)
First things first, the guys revisit Landon Donovan's testimonial match on Friday, a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in which the post robbed the USMNT legend of a Derek Jeter-esque moment. But did he cry? Simon says no, while Andrew and David contend he's got more humble pie in his future. LD aside, who looked good? Did the ETR curse strike Joe Gyau? What will the team look like against Honduras with all the big boys called up? Meanwhile, in MLS, the playoff races have come down to two spots. In the East, Toronto has all but waved the white flag. In the West, it comes down to Cascadia Cup winner Vancouver and Portland. One has a much easier schedule than the other. The Supporters' Shield still comes down to LA and Seattle with a home-and-home series left to finish the regular season. The Revs sealed their place, and Charlie Davies has been crucial to their current form. On the five-year anniversary of the car accident that threatened his life and career, Davies joins the guys to reflect and look ahead. Ever positive, he says the USMNT isn't out of the question. In the mailbag, we wonder who the listeners might want as guests, where MLS Cup would be hosted in a perfect world and mull a time capsule to test our ability to predict the future. Ray Davies (The Kinks) 5-15-96
Like most people my age, I grew up with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks. Some artists are just legendary in stature, and those three are rock and roll royalty in my book. So when I heard Ray Davies was in town for a show, had written a new book, and a new Kinks album was coming out, I figured I'd try to get him in the studio for an interview. Though he said no to a live performance, he did join me on the air for one of the most memorable morning of my career.
