"Futures right now and changed on the S&P and on the NASDAQ you're two year very briefly through 2% It's at one 99 90 right now Hire the session 2.00 one zero on my Bloomberg at the moment Lisa there it is Some big moves in this bond market senior yields have four basis points to two 19 and some curving version out there 5 and 7s dancing around where the tennis right now Yeah Tom would be proud of you for going out all those decimal places I was just for him And he's listening in and very pleased Honestly how much are we counting on the fed to act aggressively versus people thinking they're still behind the curve Will stay behind the curve and will allow inflation over the longer term to get much higher than I think people have seen in years Have you seen this survey from the national association for business economics They have their annual meeting today Have you seen these numbers It's amazing 77% of nail policy survey panelists view current monetary policy is too stimulative 78% expect inflation at top 3% through 2023 ever my 2022 That's a fed for most of these respondents so that is behind a curve And they don't think that they're going to get ahead of the curve because they don't expect the fed funds rate to get above 3% through the end of next year So again this dissonance between the fed and what we're seeing on the ground We've got a perfect conversation now with Dave Altice the executive vice president and director of research at the Federal Reserve bank of Atlanta the president also of the national association for business economics as well David come to you first That survey is pretty brutal That's the fed that these respondents think is going to stay behind the curve Dave what's this fake going to do about it Well I mean the FOMC is going to do what the F one C does And conduct monetary policy of course as they deem appropriate To meet the committee's goal So I'm not quite sure the survey is going to move the needle and it's worth recognizing and remembering that the survey was done a week It was in the field a week before the meeting itself So we're not quite certain how that might have moved the needle on sentiment I imagine I will be talking to a lot of people today who are going to let me know exactly how it's going to move the needle in the sentiment But the messages were pretty clear that our members in name have some concerns about inflation and about the course of fed policy Do they think that the fed is deliberately going to remain behind the curve or do they think Dave that we're going to get a fed incapable of curbing inflation at a cycle when it's a lot of supply chain driven issues when you have really a conundrum where the only way for them to counter it is to dampen demand in a tenuous recovery moment Yeah it's a little bit hard always to kind of interpret what any group of individuals mean when they answer a survey like this There are a couple of the details sort of in the survey itself which gives some clues about what might be generating some of this not so sanguine view of inflation Ukraine is very definitely sort of looming large and it shows up in two places really in the survey and the first place there is a clear sentiment that the situation in Ukraine is going to exacerbate and sort of elongate the process of getting the supply chain disruption sort of back into order And the second is reaction that because of the uncertainty associated with the situation in Ukraine and probably broader geopolitical concerns that it will create a scenario where there will be a more cautious approach than what otherwise would be So I think in part those are elements underneath the pessimism I don't think it didn't pick up any sense that it's a belief that the situation with the rate of the inflation rate is not being taken seriously or that the pivot towards the inflation fight is being just lip service I just think it's a lot of the confluence of a lot of these other things that are making people a little concerned about whether things will be as aggressive as they would like them David moving beyond the survey what's your view on the ground as head of research at the Atlanta fed because they do incredible research on GDP on wages of the resilience of the American consumer Well I mean we're still detecting virtually no signals of any softening of demand when we talk to firms And we talk to a lot of them I mean we spend a great deal of our time with our boots on the ground talking to the people actually making pricing decisions and employment decisions They're really not much of a signal we're getting that consumer demand is substantially weakening Pricing power appears to not be waning at all At least from the anecdotal reports and actually from survey reports as well And there's some the question is always how long can that last But no one is sort of ringing the bowel about the process of fairly strong consumer demand and fairly resilient demand That seems to still be the play On the subject of demand and elasticity or elasticity though Dave at what point would you start to expect a man destruction to kick in Is there a historical level that you'd be watching Now I mean one of the things that we've obviously been fairly concerned about and tuned into is the waning of the fiscal stimulus but if you for example track consumer spending with wage and salary income Those things track very closely and not what that means is there was an awful lot of the stimulus that was essentially kept in reserve and not used to support and a substantial way spending beyond the early days of the pandemic So it would seem just from that sort of information and that sort of data that there's not a situation where the consumer is way out over their skis and unable to kind of sustain through the fading away of all the support that happened as a result of the pandemic Hey Dave awesome to catch up because I've got a busy few days busy week ahead of you So thanks for spending some time with us Dave I'll take the Federal Reserve bank of Atlanta This email just in from Scott minard of Guggenheim Lisa and Scott thanks for watching Since the following base case would be a 20% rise from here could be more over.

"The Bloomberg interactive broker studio in New York City to our worldwide audience Tom Keane he's off today but Ed ludlow from Bloomberg news will be sitting in for Tom from London Thanks so much for joining us Really appreciate you taking time And what's going to be a busy Friday Yeah and what is a global story about this variant global sell off in markets And thankfully we're in two big cities to talk about it Absolutely So we got a new variant of this coronavirus certainly royally markets this morning European equity index is offer approximately 3% U.S. equity futures They point to a sharply lower open this morning in the investors not surprising or flocking to U.S. treasuries with a ten year now yielding 1.53% on the commodities front it is a risk off day with WTI crude oil down nearly 6% to just under $74 a barrel Gold is tired Let's call it 1810 an ounce and Bitcoin is sharply lowered about $54,500 per ton So maybe an entry point for mister Tom Keane on his day off Let's get some more color on the pre market equity trading with Bloomberg stocks editor Dave awesome Well we might as well start with the travel stocks Paul and you see some across the board Declines there You look at the cruise lines you see carnival down 10% in early trading We're all Caribbean Norwegian with comparable losses on the airlines delta stands out it's down 8% united off 8 and a half percent car rental companies hertz global holies also off 8 and a half percent Among the hotels Marriott International down 6% In the casino stocks Las Vegas Sands lower by 8% And then you think online travel bookings air-b-n-b is off 6 and a half percent You know put it all together you're talking about some pretty substantial declines And that's not all You've got energy stocks lower along with the price of crude You look at ExxonMobil it's down four and a half percent Chevron down 4% Occidental Petroleum down 7 and a half percent And then you think about shall we say the reopening trade the stocks had benefited as economies kind of loosened up lately Well they're taking a hit Ride hailing service Uber down 5 and a half percent lift off 6% Movie theater owner AMC entertainment down 7% The concert promoter live nation also down 7% and the department store chains lower courses You know they had their earnings in the last couple of weeks Macy's notably down 6% in early trading Then we turn to the COVID-19 vaccine makers no surprise They're higher Pfizer up 6% It's German partner BioNTech up 8% in U.S. trading Modern is up 12 and a half percent But then you know there are a couple of companies involved with this sort of thing That are lower One of them's Merck It's down 3% Updated study data showed the drug makers proposed COVID-19 pill cut the risk of hospitalization and death by 30% and that's lower than the previous estimate of 48% And then you have down 50 and a half percent smaller company U.S. regulators ordered a suspension of research on its proposed COVID vaccine called covaxin So there you go Stay at home stocks though Yes here we go Definitely moving higher Yes I know you're a fan of peloton And the exercise bike makers up 8% in early trading maybe more notable Zoom video up 9 and a half percent And this is a company that had fallen 17% this week in response to disappointing earnings While we're at it we should note the telemedicine provider Teladoc health up 8 and a half percent in the electronic signature service DocuSign of 5% And I got one more for you a little bit of COVID effect Okay And regulatory issues shall we say didi global down four and a half percent People know the matters that Chinese authorities ask the ride hailing service to give up its U.S. listing Now Dee Dee sold it American depositary receipts in June and then became the target of a data security investigation Yeah more and more issues coming out of China for those big Chinese stocks Bloomberg stocks editor Dave Wilson thanks so much We appreciate that We will chat with you in the next hour Right now let's get the latest We need to get smart on this new variant and you variant We can do that Thankfully with some of the expertise coming out of the Johns Hopkins University Andrew peckish Professor of molecular microbiology and immunology from Johns Hopkins Doctor thank you so much for taking the time It seems like we've been talking to you for a long time now And here we go again with another variant the new variant What do we know about this Well there are two important lines of evidence that came out really this week One was significant numbers of sequences of the virus that indicated this virus has a host of mutations that could avoid existing antibody responses generated by either infection or vaccine And it also had some mutations that are associated with faster infection and more transmission So on paper it looked like a variant of concern And then recently from South America the public health authorities there realized that one of their PCR tests could serve as a surrogate for sequencing and their data suggests that a recent surge in cases was driven almost primarily by this new variant And so therefore those two pieces of data have really caused a global awareness now of this variant and message to stop the global spread of this virus Good morning from London I'm so grateful to be able to speak to you I'm looking at my Bloomberg terminal at the most red articles of the last 8 and 24 hours and almost just the vast majority of them are our own Bloomberg intelligence research on the science behind this new variant You can see how seriously investors are taking this Are they overreacting Should we be worried about this And if so why Well this is just early times and early pieces of data And we need to continue to monitor and get more data together There have been variants on paper that have looked dangerous that have not turned into anything The combination of this virus looking dangerous on paper plus the initial association of it with surges in South Africa are what put it on our radar screen But we have to think about what are the things that could be done in general to limit COVID-19 Because I'll remind everybody many parts of the world are experiencing surges in COVID cases even in the absence of the new variants You see a sell off in European equities with the 3100 UK down by the most since September 2020 the cat caron in France down by the most since June of last year the rationale seems to be that we're heading for lockdowns if this is indeed as serious as some might fear A lockdown to the right answer to stop transmission There.

"Yep. Hey, Absolutely. Hey, Julia, stay with because I want you to be here while I am opening this package from David Unboxing this with you. I hope it's not something dirty. Oh, this is great. You know what? Dave from Hoffman Estates sent me a the book about the governor Ann Richards, The thorny rose of Texas. This is exciting to have. Thank you so much, Dave. Awesome. That is great. Thank you, Dad. Yeah. Excellent. Thank you. Thank you so much. Well, Julie, I'm glad that you were here for that. That unboxing. I appreciate that you be safe. Okay? Yeah. Take care. Well, thank you for that. Thanks for all you do. Oh, I appreciate that. Thank you for being there for me to be doing it with. You know, I could just be talking to no one listening. And here's the thing. Juliet If you're ever driving or wherever you are, and you hear me say something like that doesn't sound quite right. Don't hesitate to call then too, and say, you know, if what did you mean by that? You know what I mean? It's not A day. I know that I'm infallible. Feel that you're open there You are open to conversations 100%. Otherwise, what's the point? Otherwise we're them, right. Okay, So let me just finish by saying this is a war of disinformation or under attack, And we really have to talk about it. We have to talk about it because you know if you're over age, 30 or 35 years old, you have zero education in dealing and navigating with misinformation on the Internet, and so So we have all these people who are just You know, And then, like you said they just didn't doubt they don't come on really hard all the time. They just speed doubt right to you know this in franchise, you too demoralized. Yes, control like you said, right and fear. And so we just all have to really get educated. We need to talk more about this about the disinformation that is The root of this, you know. Plus then, of course, you know the Republicans who are joining hands with these people. Do you think that part of it comes from an? Yeah, right. Do you think it comes from an unwillingness to say Oh, I was wrong. Maybe That's the difference with one difference, because I frightful Yeah, we're also prices aren't we, like even when I said for any of that? Yeah, even like I said, I'm embarrassed to say that I fell for some of the disinformation about vaccinations. But that's it is a position of strength to say Maybe I was wrong or hey, I was wrong. Let me think about this again and that's you know, that's stronger than clinging to lies. It really is. Yeah, Yeah, thanks. Very, thank you, Julia. Have a great night. Okay, You take it and I promise we will keep talking about just like you said. That's right. Yes. Keep talking. That's left. Thank you so much. Let's take a break here by Julia. It would take a break here catch up on traffic.

"Because he can't fuck because dave fox so if i'm upstairs recording in my room that means dave has to be downstairs in the cage so he doesn't chew the shit out everything you're probably won't bring them up in your room and actually kinda tried that but i don't have a lot of shells is japanese house. He got understandings a different world. I live in. I don't have like there's just not enough space. So i've got a ton of stuff on the floor. It just wasn't going to work out so instead of completely redoing my room spent about five hundred bucks on a laptop and hooked everything up downstairs so i can record. Now dave's awesome. This is awesome. And we're gonna keep being awesome dave's color. He is the accent any style you could. Have you wear a tuxedo. And dave gray is stands next. You're going to be the the stands out you wear a suit dave's looking stylish being with you. Because he's all curly in cool where leisure suit in. He's coming through with the same style you wear mixed colors and he pulls it. All together is as dave dave fox last story about dave talked about how losing good for you. I've told the story before. And it was about when i transferred from blue belt to brown belt in judo so when i was blue belt for one year i won every fight. I had in competition in under thirty seconds. I thought it was awesome. Then it became. A brown belt in judo was blue and under and brown up. They fight together and for one year. I lost every fight in under thirty seconds and that was a huge kick to the ego. And it actually again. I think it was good for me. Because tommy that losing isn't the worst thing in the world you have to power through by the end of that year. I was actually thinking about quitting judo. I suck at this. I'm never going to get better. And then i had that one fight where i beat my first black belt. Because he walked up to me. He was completely overconfident. And i was completely lacking in confidence..

"Insane. What did you think about this Well well i thought a few things. One we in our ninety six season on awesome movie or we talked about swingers. And kinda doug limon's up and downs and you know this like you said has been delayed but you don't put it past them to you know. Make good movies and also movies at somehow sometimes. Don't get credit at the time that their release so who knows it does look like a little scattered like a lot of stuff going on here but as you know from our year end episode. I'm a big mads mikkelsen. Fan another round last year so My pieces were. I think one that i actually used in another episode which was light in my life. The casey affleck movie where he has the a daughter and she's like the last female on earth. Because this seems to be. I don't know if they're on this planet or another planet but it seems to be that daisy ridley's the only woman alive. If i m getting that right you know and yeah and the other one. I thought is another awful movie so i thought that you probably would like it. Which is the will and jaden smith vehicle after earth where they crash into a planet have to survive together and this seems like it has some of that like you. Don't know about this planet you have to learn about it type feel to it. I thought you were going to say. John carter but yeah. I've never seen after earth actually but it looks so bad but along those lines i thought of cowboys vs aliens a very bad movie that mix all kinds of genres in this movie. Just seems to have a lot of ideas all thrown together last woman on earth they can hear each other's thoughts. It's an alien planet. Just you know so so so many things that are just kind of thrown at the board and seeing what sticks the other one. I thought of not. It's not one movie. It's actually a couple of movies. It's a quiet place which is a movie where you can't make a sound and then bird box movie where you can't see or look at thing and so in this one you can't think so it's another one of these like single concept sci fi adventures on netflix's. Thanks you for combining two of their You know well. I guess you really. Didn't you just kick bird box. Which has one but cowboys and aliens. Jon favreau. that was one we love. I love jon favreau. Yeah when i slept through but you know do we have john farrow any credit for Like he's demand disney plus right now because he's got the mandalorian and then also wanda divisions great and You know even though. He's stepped away from the marvel. Marvel universe he was what he jump started that thing to. Oh yeah absolutely. I think he gets credit for it. And if i'm not mistaken isn't he like developing an entire new trilogy of star wars movies at the moment i mean anyone should. It should be him at this point in time does seem watch one division dave. I don't know highly recommended. Maybe one of these days. Yeah i know. You got to watch tom and jerry a few more times i. That's right that's right. Well let's move on to another movie. This one is a long time coming sequel to a beloved classic. It is coming to america coming to amazon prime on march fifth. Of course with eddie murphy. It's by craig brewer and it looks like a lot of Comedy longtime in the work sequels of kind of reach reading a lot of territory. But what did you think about this. Well i re watched the original coming to america. As opposed coming the number to america you know recently and i love the first hour of coming to america the first one but the second hour is not that good i think it kinda survives on that all the comedy of the first hour and then when it gets plot heavy in the second hour. It's like hey kind of gets bogged down. But i didn't wanna pick like some obvious ones. Although i will say the idea of a young person getting rich Very quickly and having to adapt to that which seems to be the prince. Kimes kid in this one you know. Yeah me of trading places. Which of course eddie murphy and john landis who directed the first coming to america you know and then the other one i thought of is like what movie was the Most odd version of someone in a political or royal situation air reminded me of the john goodman filmed film. King ralph king ralph. Dave burstein mentioned here on the piecing together trailer. It may well be may will be first time of the entire podcast altogether. We're going deep into the bag because we gotta bring the heat today. Yes good job. I like a one more which is again about people getting rich. Maybe on the sly. And it's a lovely movie called waking ned devine which. I'm sure has nothing to do with this other that you know it's people getting rich watchmaking waking ned devine. Did you ever see that movie. It's a great movie. I think i did back in the day when it came out possibly cool. Those are my pieces. Dave awesome well. First piece is the lazy one. I will admit in. It's all of these long time in the works comedy sequels. Whether it's an anchorman two or any of these ones that just come so long you after the first one and kind of just like i said in in in the description of the movie that kind of like rest on Just redoing the same thing with maybe a son or daughter or you know that kind of thing you could also go with like a jay and silent bob Boo you know one of those kind of movies. The other one. I thought of is. There's a lot of culture clash in this trailer. So i thought of borat tie it to my first piece. You could say borat too because of his daughter so again. It's continuing a very common tradition lately of these long in the works comedy seven. We both agree that borat to which was a long time between the original and the sequel is pretty great. It is pretty damn good. Yeah so i mean. And i watch you know. Obviously we watched the preview again. Today for coming to america and You know tracy morgan's in there. Some of those fun characters. That eddie murphy and arsenio hall play are in there. I mean i love the preach. Love randy watson so i'm holding out hope that this'll be good but who knows i hope so too. It doesn't look very good. But i hope so. Does you know it does look at dave the next movie on the list. I'll this one. I take it as it's i think it should be. I called boss level up march fifth on hulu. Although my dad has had a bootleg from the swap meet for like a year now. But don't tell anybody about that anyway. He loved it. And it's directed by joe carnahan. Who has had some pretty damn good action movies in the past and it's another time loot movie. We know jason loves time loop movies. It starts frank grillo mel gibson. I me- watts. It looks like a video game brought to life in which this guy has to just keep living this very action packed world..

They become like entangled in this relationship. That's almost codependent. And i wonder you know. I know where it left off but i wonder what it is. Now you know we did it. Turn into something more. I think they're making a narrative version of this as well but pretty fascinating stuff. Yeah i still haven't watched that one. That was going to be the next doc. I watch before. We got to this. But i never got a chance to so. I'm i'm definitely looking forward to checking it out. I'll just say one one other one that just throw on the list. In many documentary talks for the year It kind of rides a strange line between documentary and narrative film because it's all baked but It's about the closing of a Las vegas bar. Although it's not really shot in las vegas and all of just the people who inhabit the bar and they're the regulars there and you just kind of spend all this time with them and it's a really interesting movie.
