"That'd be a great place. I mean, he's from the south from Alabama. Maybe he goes to Atlanta and plays there and has that lineup in that ballpark. That could be a great thing for his up for him. He could be the backup plan in New York. If they don't get Machado. Trying to think of other spots that would fit him? Well. Yeah, can't can't really think of anything else up my head. But I mean, those are the two that jump out to me, which would be great landing spots for a guy like Josh Donaldson. And really, I think, you know, he's one of those guys where his power is gonna play anywhere. So I'm not necessarily worried about too much about where he goes looking for the one of those spots that would give a huge boost. I'm probably be the high end of if I was doing that way too early mock draft down some and be on my team in the fourth round. What about you Darvish coming off his worst season that who's actually, you know, somewhat healthy for. Though. I mean, obviously, injuries have completely drilled it if he comes into season healthy next year. Where do you think he's drafted in? Would you be willing to showroom. No, I didn't like I was. I was probably way out there on the knell. I don't want him into this year. I went absolutely no part of them. And I obviously justified in that and I don't know what he's out. They ruled them out for the rest of this year with the with the stress reaction in triceps strain. There's there's, let's see how that process. I still want no part of him. Being in, you know, the stress reaction and tip it was elbow now. I mean, I'm by no means a doctor, but I don't like the idea of elbow issues, especially guy who's already had Tommy John surgery, and he's exiting that Tommy John window a little grace period that. We are about. So I I'm super concerned if he drops into like the ten or twelve rounds, which I think he easily could and he is ADP coming into the season was forty forty. Seventh was insanely high by the way. Yes. But I mean if he's dropping into the one, twenty five one thirties I'm gonna have a hard time saying, no, for guy was going to strike out eleven nine. This strike outs there. I'm gonna. I'm gonna run away from it. I'm running away. I don't want let somebody else take the risk. I think there's a better a better shot. One guy that comes to mind just because of similar issues this year, but he hasn't had the problem. You know, add a Fisher surgery is Lance mccullers. When I'm looking at the two of these, I'm still like Darvish has had the surgery. Callers had red flags right now. I am gonna take mccullers I, but I'm not crazy about. I'm not crazy about it. And I, I was big on the colors coming into this year. Pity hard hit me hard, but I, I would still take him over your Darvish. Let me throw a threesome. Would you rather Darvish Darvish Robbie Ray. Robbie Ray Darvish Zack Wheeler. Man, we. Spencer I have to a Darvish Thanh. Puss. Oh, well, okay. I. I don't know. I probably should go the other way. Say same push Darvish your Ross stripling. Stripling. Let's see. Do one more Darvish or Julio Tehran. Oh God. I can't. Around. I can't cannot watch him pitch. Got a sub for your a..

"A veteran he'll turn things. Up there's, no history to that I mean that doesn't always necessarily people. Were mentioning Justin, Verleger last year but I mean Justin Verlander was never as bad, as Cole hamels is right now and I'm glad, you brought that up because yes you you're kind of fending off a lot of the idea that this debt Cole hamels could. Be the this, year's Justin Verlander first, of all when you say that understand what exactly you're stating Justin, Verlander one, on one of the Runs of all run last, season starting September, first because the Astros acquired him August thirty first posting. On through the playoffs and has just picked up where he left off so. For, the, past calendar year Justin Verlander has been amongst, the top five pitchers in baseball. I would be stunned beyond stunned if Cole hamels, even approached that. Level, now can, he be better than what he is right now with the Rangers which is, a pitcher who. Has pitched one hundred. And fourteen innings with. An era of four point. Seven two, but more scary is the fact that his fifth his fielder. Independent pitching is, a five point that just goes to show you explain that for, the people that are aren't in fifth so fielder, so area obviously measures the runs that you've given that's tangible that's fine the only like and this is where we get into. The analytics the, problem with saying okay, his areas this sometimes ERA doesn't always identify exactly why you've given Up the runs you have a better more sticky status they say something's a little more predictive is fifth what you can control as a pitcher how many home runs are you giving up how many hits and walks are you giving up and then conversely. How many batters are you striking, out to not allow balls in play okay it's something you. The pitcher can control well his fifth is five point two it's measured. Basically, like same thing so five point zero is bad it's worse than his current ERA that goes to show you that for all the folks that want to grasp it Cole, hamels coming, back to the player that he once was I, would be very leery because Justin Verlander while his area was high last season with the Tigers his fifth was much better than it. Appeared and his velocity also was very good so you could look at. Things and. Say all right I can create the narrative were Justin Verlander we'll. Get back to being, close, to the pitcher that he once was which was a a yearly candidate that i cannot lay use the same case with cole hamels in the peripheral numbers that he has again would a move to the cubs with the cubs the one thing they have in their favor is they again are fielding one of the best defense defenses in baseball right which is what they did in two thousand sixteen when they won the world series now cole hamels cole hamels would be great benefactor of that's for sure so i would expect his area to come down not just because of that but also he'd be heading to the national league where he wouldn't have to worry about right so yes i would expect better numbers from call hamels but i the main thing is you're you're hoping you can catch lightning in a bottle perhaps but the reality is i think expecting that would be a bit foolish how exactly does it work if you're the cubs of your the cubs organization you work this deal and you bring in cole hamels you already have i mean last year you went out and you write cantata in and then you you off-season One Chatwin Darvish Darvish is pitching chat woods trying and failing miserably I know the last eleven games before today they were nine and two in. In in chat which starts well that's neither three now because they they actually as ten into right yes the walk, off? Walk off win today so they get a win today not the not the chat. Would, have much to do with it going forward two-thirds, five hits doesn't. Sound bad but six walks is miserable and and the point being is that, every time chat what goes out there you know that bullpens yes it's going to be taxed..

"Was unbelievable so it's not about you find out it's not about you it's about the people who helped you. Get there and you never have enough time to thank all of them it's writing. That speech was one, of the, most, difficult things I had to, do I was gonna say 'cause we're we're we're having Brian, at five and we're gonna ask? Him if the speech is done yet? But when were you most? Emotional was it when you got the call? Was it the, night before was it when you're standing at? That podium is. It like when did you did it. Just hit, you oh my gosh after all these, years here I am there's a I'm gonna take too much time. Here but it's a. Great story, that, I'd like to share. With your I was in buffalo Making some. Appearances from my book and so I had. A break between appearances I was going. To take a run it was a beautiful day and the phone rings my cell phone and. It's a California, number and I said, I, don't know anybody California but, a long time ago George Allen said, with the, Chicago blitz you. Know answer the phone it might be a. Person buying a ticket so I never. Forgot And, so, I said okay I'll answer it and Person says Bilas David, Baker, from, the, hall of fame? And I said oh hi David? How're you, doing, what can I do for you you said well it's my pleasure to tell you that you've been. Nominated in in the, contributor, category along with. Ron Well wolf and I was nonplussed shocked and I said holy bleep And David, said, Bill this is an open, line so be little care I, apologize it said I'm sorry I'm at a. Loss for words I. I can't think of anything I can say. I'm just so shocked and and then we talked about the logistics and then as I got to the finish version of the speech where you. You do, rehearse, it and people who are, used to doing it Tell you rehearse it because will you will if you rehearse long enough the emotion will leave you you won't lose you won't lose Hold. Of your emotions And the first, time I did it I got about halfway through and got the coach Levy and completely broke that I. Had to stop unbelievable and so, as you probably saw I did get through all of it because I rehearsed it at least thirty times before I could, finally get it done but, everything else was great except when we walked, out to be introduced. They introduce you individually I started, to really get emotional just sat there and I don't know if I'll get through this more and more emotional than watching your team take the field right before kickoff. At a Super. Bowl same, same. Thing, same butterflies yeah yeah same before. We let. You go all right so you're such. A big baseball fan how do you feel about our team about? The, cubs right now well there I think they're still the team. To beat in division I think you know the bats in the? Lineup, will straighten out there's no question about that the managers terrific I don't you know what what's the bullpen gonna, do I mean in. The end I think and I don't doubt. The feels out there looking for all hell. Get a bullpen army, he'll get a starting pitching like with you. Darvish Darvish RBIs is the. Is the. Issue As a general manager my my inclination would. Be to say he's. Never. Gonna, be. What, he was and so. What are you going to get out, of them the rest of the, way I would lower the exploit expectations but, if I can get a bullpen arm and or, another starter, and they're. In great shape Darvish is the question. Yeah yeah sure bellied his always our pleasure, when whenever. You call into? The show we get to. See you, here whether it, was at the draft in Chicago you're one of the greats and we always, appreciate always appreciate thank. You my hope to see you in canton. You.

"By that's why they're trying to do. This all. Right notable rental traits that does it, work? Right that's always the question is sure you. Can you can go out and rent a, player and he leaves and Phillies trade legitimate prospects for Manny, Machado they make the, playoffs but they're out and he and he ends up leaving and a guy or two turns into an all star type. Player It'll hurt but it won't it won't crush you like Ellison if guy turns into one of the best players in baseball Jalen Ortiz but I. Feel like it's worth the gamble and. If that. Happens it happens you know these are, prospects? Reason but does it work so last year. The dodgers traded for you Darvish Darvish I, didn't like to trade I don't like his stuff anymore we've, I think we've seen, the better pitcher from the cubs this year not Darvish who went to Chicago Arrietta but did it work for them now Darvish? Darvish. Was pretty good but they didn't. Ended up end up winning so. What, does work like what's worked here for us for that team win, the World Series so they got to, game seven lit up in the plot And the. Playoffs he was terrible in the play and then he left so they traded for him they. Didn't win the whole thing and then he walked away Yup They gave up some good prospects. But we're the jury's still out. On a lot of those. Prospects Dodgers traded, for ritual and Josh Radic I mean that's not, that was a big that was. A big move but it's not in the same caliber last year the. Diamondbacks trader for JD Martinez they're kinda like the Phillies last year and they got. To the playoffs he left what's work getting to the playoffs getting. To the World Series him staying? I think it depends on what team you are for the Phillies what would we? Work. For you like the trade happens. And. I'll see us does it matter if..

"Into that season my third season and what kind of brought me back to the story cap was hearing about hugh darvish darvish and his article in the la times and talking about the fans and getting the right and for me it took me back to my third year and again i moved i moved away from home and one of my really close friends ended up getting he was he was actually murdered out of state and it was really hard like i was just it was only i was only twenty years of age and lost one of my close friends and i think mentally i just was not prepared for the start of the season to season started and we weren't playing well and i wasn't playing well and i wasn't scoring and you know the fans started getting on me and getting on the team and it just kinda seemed like every time i touched a park or you know i didn't do anything well or i didn't get in a fight or whatever i mean the fans i got on top of me and it was hard i mean being a chicago guy in having your hometown fans boo and have banners up at the old chicago stadium and taking shots at you banners oh yeah yeah i mean it was it was it was rough i mean it was it was tough not only for me but for my family my family is there they got season tickets you know the year before everything's great all of a sudden now it seemed like the year before he went to the conference semis against edmund rice i hear our first year you're eighty forty five exactly and then the second year we lost in the first round of the playoffs but individually you know i had my guy and we had a good year and you know i had a good year so we're kind of just it was hard i mean look there were times when i went home and i mean i i was i was i was a lost puppy i mean i it hurt me it hurt me a lot to have my hometown fans booing me and again i was trying but you know it just had a bad year i i don't know what other way to put it it just it was a tough year so psychologically i had a tough time dealing with now i was only in a national hockey league for three years that had been my third year so i was played two full years now is going in my third year so i i really i think it helped me moving forward but going through that it just took me back to what darvish was talking about him getting on the road you can't control that there are things you can control and things that you can't and when i saw his comments about not wanting to come to the top of the dugout and whatever like look you gotta toughen up like you can't control that if you're at home you gotta do the job you gotta step up you gotta show up you gotta be able to go out there and do what you can fans in this town as long as you're putting forth an effort for the most part they're going to give you the benefit of the doubt but if they understand that that type of stuff bothers you especially on the road you're going to have a problem it's going to affect you and like i said for me cap my third year in the nhl it affected me i it was tough but then ended up getting traded that offseason and i went to toronto and i scored forty two goals the next year and they're in the rest is history so for me when i heard about the darvish comments i saw i looked at it from a player's point of view and going okay this guy needs to talk to somebody this guy needs to figure it out and you better toughen up you better find a way to overcome whatever is bothering you and then i took it a step further from the players inside that locker room i know exactly what would happen if that was me if i came up like that at any time let alone my third year in the nhl guys would say hey they put up hanging up by the coathanger outside the door in the in the locker room i mean that that's just.

"He was your second guy that's huge but a lot of teams are relying on you darvish to be their teams ace and it just hasn't been there six era one fifty seven whip in thirty innings he's got a twenty six percents strikeout rate eleven percent walk rate just a nine percent swing strike rate easily his lowest ever homers up even from last year's surge hits or way up right now thanks to three sixteen babb and two fifty four batting average which is pretty good generally speaking but not for darvish darvish lives off being very difficult to hit at in some walks left on base rate down to sixty seven percent and still a neutral sort of ground on a fly ball ratio so quick thoughts at a glance what is what is your take on dr so far this year before we dig into the particulars well you have to think that darvish is better than this i mean it's a four zero nine sierra the very least one point eight home per nine isn't going to stick with think there's something going wrong as far as pitch selection or maybe a certain pitches breaking as much as used to that's the first guy vincent i would have these numbers it is very shocking seeing that three point drop in swing strike rate concern has about twelve percent career mark and it's nine percent this year so makes me think that if the blossoms still there which it pretty much is than there's something going around with pitch mix or how he's using certain pitches in a slider being used enough or enough break on its cutter that kind of thing.

"To be that way july august and september i'm just talking about what we see right now i wasn't a fan of darvish darvish is proving me right i'm telling you this because i'm hoping that you proved me wrong right so darvish has failed to complete five innings in four of his six starts this year they're already matches career highs set just last season the cubs thought that they could get more out of darvish corny jesse rogers when they signed him to a six year twenty six billion dollar contract they they're getting decidedly less and the fifth inning has been brutal for you darvish he's era is three point thirty one point fifty i wish it was three thirty one point fifty in the fifth inning that's as the ira that is brutal and what i continue to see from darvish and just watching his games and i knew this before he came to the team but just kind of watching i see a cut fastball as see a slider i see a change of pace i see a curve a fastball but i'll see enough of the fastball or commander the fastball or the movement of the fastball for him to be able to get outs with it and that's not good at all that last outing four third seven hits six runs five earned is not good enough it just isn't for see to me when you make a signing like you darvish the signing must match the roster in what i mean by that is if you believe that kris bryant and schwarzer and jason heyward for whatever you whatever hayward brings to the table whether that's defense and some offense here and there when you look at the al morris and the biases and the rizzo's and absorb rest in the in the wilson contraire is and player in in half when he gets a chance to play and players like that man if you have a roster you wanna make sure that the pitching as as solid as your offense and i just think there was a reach for darvish and i'll be glad to be wrong and say i was totally wrong in august and september by win win a nephew turns it around but i'm telling you now that that outing and many outings from darvish looks very plain looks very average very pedestrian and i don't know how that turns around but i just see a guy that's not necessarily confident.

"Schwab over the last few games has looked pretty good working counts and the other way you know driving in some runs without home runs so that you know what they haven't played very often is this is the second game they've played since last friday yes and i've been saying to you guys off the air bunch and maybe it's brought on some chuckles i don't mean it to be because i'm sincere with it i think you've seen drastic improvement from him in left field now you're not going to mistake him for a gold glove leftfielder right now but he's making the plays he needs to make and he looks a lot smoother and more competent while doing it if i was a cub fan i would be soothed by what i've seen again he's not a plus defender butts he's made the plays he's needed to make and he's looks more comfortable in left field which is huge step forward and if he can be competent in left field which is really all they're looking for his competence out there with his bat which they believe in you know we'll come around him working the count and not striking out at nearly the prolific rate he did last season is certainly encouraging because all of a sudden if shore becomes the hitter that they envisioned when they drafted him the offense will not be a problem it will you know it really i think the biggest issue for the cubs has been their starting pitching early on in effect that look the cold weather you don't wanna you're not using it as an excuse necessarily but the reality is it's been unseasonably cold and the fact that jose can tana and john darvish darvish of course lester bounceback say but cantata and darvish in particular i think really the cold weather has not been good for them and if they can get to a position where they're actually pitching in some normalcy then all of a sudden you feel you feel better if they can get back to being the guys they weren't all of a sudden you have yourself what looks like you know what everybody was excited about heading into the rotation is not has not been good early on for the reasons you mentioned they've also been inconsistent at the plate you'll have a day when against atlanta come from behind fashion and and.

"Him in lieu of the more well rested guy but dick pic picked picked the narrative is it roberts is wrong because he gave the ball at a u darvish or is it kershaw can't pitch in the post season because i did not the dave roberts made his decision based on this but if i am listening to all this some good okay kershaw can't pitch in the postseason noone said that about yu darvish after a pitch poorly early you're in the series no one went after him for how he pitch earlier in the in in game three so he went with the the more well rested guy who doesn't carry with him the narrative of not being good in the postseason oh you you really you can't have it both ways so he went with darvish darvish was kind of nickel in died the death early than i gave up a big turnaround bomb to george spranger and darvish is a night and possibly his time with the la dodgers is is over and dave roberts talked after the game and he really was at a loss for words for why darvish pitched the way he did unexpected unexpected even today that the the velocity i thought he was right there i thought he's gonna really throw the baseball well um and i think he was three and a third may be in this series and and just very unfortunate and i i know he wanted it baseball i know he was prepared i just can't explain the results i really can yeah i mean he's at a loss for words and i know you'll hear people that will say they saw this come and i think that's that's really really unfair yu darvish was a big part of their success once they traded form especially in the post season he won a game in the national league division series against the arizona he won a game in the national league championship series in chicago against the cubs there is a lot of managers that would like to have him to give the ball to in a series deciding game and roberts talked afterwards about how he felt how he felt good given the body you darvish starting game seven you has been one of our top three starters all year hours since we acquired him and we had a bad one in.

"He gave the ball at a u darvish or is it kershaw can't pitch in the post season because i did not the dave roberts made his decision based on this but if i'm listening to all this i'm going okay kershaw can't pitch in the postseason noone said that about yu darvish every pitch poorly earlier in the series no one went after him for how he pitch earlier in the in in game three so he went with the the more well rested guy who doesn't carry with them the narrative of not being good in the postseason oh you you really can't have it both ways so he went with darvish darvish was kind of nickel and died the death early than they gave up a big durham bombed at george spranger and darvish is a night and possibly his time with the la dodgers is is over and dave roberts talked after the game and he really was at a loss for words for why darvish pitched the way he did gis unexpected even today that the the velocity i thought he was right there i thought he's gonna really throw the baseball well um and i think he was three and a third may be um in this series and just very unfortunate and i i know he wanted to baseball i know he was prepared i just can't explain the results i really can yeah i mean he's at a loss for words and i know you'll hear people that will say they saw this come and i think that's that's really really unfair yu darvish was a big part of their success once they traded form especially in the post season he won a game in the national league division series against the arizona he won a game in the national league championship series in chicago against the cubs there is a lotta managers that would like to have him to give the ball to in a series deciding game and roberts talked afterwards about how he felt how he felt good given the body you darvish starting game seven you has been one of our top three starters all year hours since we acquired m and um be at a bad one in houston but to think that we would start alex onshore or something he's never done you don't know what you're going to get in either one of those two guys in.

"And dave roberts was kind of in a in a tough spot because if he if he ran you darvish out there clinton kershaw was going to pitch and then of clean kershaw pitched well the narrative was going to be the clayton kershaw should have started that's actually what happened darvish pitched didn't pitch well w kershaw got in and pitched very well when four innings didn't give up rudd and if he threw clean kercheval out there then we'd have to hear the continuing narrative of how clayton kershaw can't get it down to the post season so that obviously didn't happen here's what i don't get right game 5 happens kershaw can't hold on on to two different leads and what is everybody especially on social media they reignite that tired and frankly often inaccurate tale of how kershaw as a bad postseason pitcher he can't handle october right that's all i heard after game five we'll see it just goes to show game one was a fluke kershaw is not an october pitcher you don't want them out there okay so to nights later they should have started him in lieu of the more well rested guy take take pic picture narrative is it roberts is wrong because he gave the ball at a u darvish or is it kershaw can pitch in the post season because i did not the dave roberts made his decision based on this but if i'm listening to all this i'm good okay kershaw can't pitch in the postseason noone said that about yu darvish every pitch poorly earlier in the series no one went after him for how he pitch earlier in the in in game three so he went with the the more well rested guy who doesn't carry with them the narrative of not being good in the postseason oh you you really can't have it both ways so he went with darvish darvish was kind of nickel and died the death early than they gave up a big to run bombed at george spranger and darvish is a night and possibly his time with the la dodgers is is over and dave roberts talked after the game and he really was at a loss for words for why darvish pitched the way he did unexpected the even today the the velocity i thought he was right there.

"It's 541 now this is all things considered from npr news i'm michelle martin as we head into the home stretch of today's program we thought we talked baseball for a few minutes sorry couldn't resist tonight houston will host game four of the world series last night the houston astros took a two games to one lead over the los angeles dodgers and the best of seven series they need to more winds to take the title and there was a racial incident directed at a player that you might have heard about that's resulted in astros player getting a fivegame suspension that will start next season brian straw houston public media is going to tell us about all this brian hello thanks so much for coming on it's my pleasure thanks so much for having me so before we talking about the pa play on the field i'd wanted to ask you about that incident involving astros first basement hughley gree out and the dodgers pitcher yu darvish tell us what happened and how is the league responding to this well it was the bottom of the second inning and burial made a racist gesture aimed at you darvish darvish is japanese and he can uphold the corner of his eyes he has since apologized in he said that a unit through a translator he's cuban and so he really doesn't speak any english but he said he did not mean to be offensive in any way shape or form he really said he was just thrilled that he finally had had some success against yu darvish i think he was one of eight batting against him in in previous times darvish used to pitch for the texas rangers so so they they faced each other actually a couple times this season you darvish said that acting like that is disrespectful not only to the people around.
