Totalitarianism: How Do You Make a Lie Seem Like a Truth?

"How do you make a lie seem like the truth? What is necessary for a totalitarian regime to exist? Well, when you study totalitarianism, it's very clear that it's not just tanks in the streets or mass surveillance, but instead it's the totalitarian control of the mind. There were 5 authors in the late 1940s and 1950s that were pioneers on the topic of totalitarianism. C. S. Lewis, of course, with the screwtape letters and lesser known for this category, but better known in general mere Christianity, which actually started as radio broadcast during the blitz of London. Aldous Huxley, who wrote Brave New World, probably one of the most important books that anyone can read to understand the sexual anarchy that we are living through today. And why due to totalitarians and dictators need to decay sexual norms to be able to have monopolistic control over a civilization. George Orwell would be the third, of course, 1984, animal farm. We talk, we talk often here about 1984 about how one of my favorite lines from 1984 is when Orwell says the best way to keep a secret from the government is you must first keep the secret from yourself. The fourth is a lesser known author that we really should talk more about Arthur koestler, who wrote a book called darkness at noon, all about the Soviet show trials and how people who are completely innocent were killed in a public display. And the 5th author, of course, was Winston Churchill, author of over 50 books and talked a lot about totalitarianism. Churchill, in particular, was very worried about how technology unrestrained from human virtue. Could not just result in tyranny, but would automatically result in tyranny. Churchill argued that technology was more than a tool. He witnessed this in the Darvish region where he saw very courageous people going into the battlefield and just being mowed down by machine guns and he realized that war has changed and technology can bring out the worst in people.

"darvish" Discussed on FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball

"As p chart like don't feel bad about skipping this start with you darvish at the san francisco giants and he was absolutely trounced for four eight runs in four innings on four homers. Because that's where he's at right now. He gets a trip to saint louis this time around if you look at it. It's been kind of an on off situation since august. Seven is i starting august quality. Start against the diamondbacks faces again. Five days later gets trounced by them. Decent enough start against the dodgers attending four runs gets pounded arizona. After that three starts against arizona in a four star period and two of them were terrible But then against the angels then that terrible one against the giants don't know that you fall for on-off patterns i wouldn't i certainly wouldn't use that as a guiding metric but that's where we're at with him Do you start. Darvish here at saint louis man. I think this is a really really tough one In part of music it shouldn't be it's yu darvish is the second round. Pick 'em guy And then there's probably means like managers look how poorly pitched over his last Few outings last month a half. You're like man. I don't know that i can do it. i'm prob-. I've got this dilemma in in one league Fortunately enough where. I'm just so far ahead where parabola doesn't matter so Ah probably roll with them. But i completely understand men. Saint louis has been quietly good They've pulled into the lead of the wildcard You know that's last wildcard. Spot in the national league excel. Offense is really helping their specifically finally coming around after a rather bland season overall They're sin about middle of the pack against righties over the last thirty days. But i still a team. That is indeed surging. Lefties have had a lot of trouble against them. Obviously darvish doesn't have to worry about that aspect of it. I tend to agree that i. I'm fine being careful here. Like i don't have a definitive answer. I know we're kind of having an hiring here. I think situationally has the situation has to matter a lot with regards to what you need. And and where you're at but don't just start because of the name value. That's what i want to impress is that you don't just have to go with them. Just because it's you darvish and you paint a big big price form at the beginning of the. That doesn't matter at this point. I think if you're looking for strikeouts or wins or quality starts think you'd be roll them because we know that he can go six And we know there will be strikeouts If you're if you're ratios are in peril than it may be better to just give it because while you may get the strikeouts yields to make you know get five earned runs into two thirds like you did it gets the mighty arizona diamondbacks Yeah i mean that's the thing too. I get disheartened by watching him. Get walloped by the diamondbacks. A couple of times teams. I was not surprised or particularly concerned that the giants ripped him because they're ripping everybody. But when i saw darvish have all troubles against the against the diamondbacks recently. I was like well. That's that's unfortunate so it was like the fourth time it seen him this year. So maybe just you know a little bit familiarity catching up with them as well true and you always have to be careful that in division I learned of this concept really during football with the two divisional games and a lot of times the the lesser team would hold close. If not outright win one of those games against like you know like miami over new england or something right doing always the best team but that second game in miami they always got an opportunity. You know it was sort of deal. Same sort of familiarity as bread in baseball with nineteen games against each other. They can come up and get you every once in a while. Even if they're the bad thi this is a quality team against darvish. Be careful. let your situation dictate where you go. Here what about louise. He'll for the yankees going against volley and cleveland cleveland. A great setup as they have been for a lot of the year. I think they have been no hit like three or four times. It's been really bad. They've got a couple of great players and that's it it's like Ramirez reyaz and every every once in a while somebody else shows for a day or two but for the most part there is not much to worry about. What that offense so we love the setup. Do we love the start here last time out earlier this week through six and this is one of those starts that you really have to take a look at the game. Long for because louise. He'll gave up five earned in six innings but four came in the first inning and then he really tightened up for the next five innings. And if you watch that start or even saw that box score and you'd be like okay i can. I can take that in a different way than i would. Normally take a five earned. Run out so to me. I've liked when he's done this year. I i'm heartened by the fact that he really settled down. After that bad for sending in the minnesota start i would go with. He'll here against cleveland. I mean we were even recording. When this one was going on our heels last year was going on and even in the last inning us laboring like in a little bit but they stuck with them they. They really have a lot of faith in lewis. He'll i think you should too He's actually my streamer. Pick for touted so of it. He was my top option on the road..

Here as we we look at this cubs farm system just over the last eight to nine months really sense that you darvish traded with the padres and then going into the trade deadline in the draft to you as you look at this system. How much different does it look now than it did. About a year ago at the same time you radically different. I haven't counted up. I would bet on our top thirty prospects list which were kind of the process. Revamping again now that we're after the trade deadline after the sidelines to draft. It's gotta be Even close to half the list of guys who weren't in the organization a year ago which is pretty crazy. I mean you see that. Obviously cubs made a lot of trades in when it happens the the farm system gets an influx of talent but they definitely Talented system last months in jim is. We're putting together our top twenty lists which is gonna come out. I think thinking about a week or so We've been kind of sorting through a lot of prospects in. Paddock has never been a frontline starter. Ever as much as they try to push him as one right. yeah. I mean listen clinton. You're right one game. Anything could happen but you know again. The padres wanted to win the division. So they could avoid that now. The dodgers seemed to have enough and with guys coming back. We'll have enough to get to that point where they can win the division and not have to face a one game plan. Isn't it amazing. Though that the best teams the very best teams in the national league all three of them. And you could throw in milwaukee and maybe the new york mets but i mean really the best teams the three best teams are all in the same division. Incredible baseball and america's in california now no doubt about up and down all right. Listen coming up definitely want to get to your phone calls. We're coming right to you. "Yu Darvish steals it. It uses it and this is walk up yesterday. Now batting for the Padres pitcher number 11 Yu Darvish. And he stands there and kind of lets the music play and Marissa put disarms of, like, really. And then after the game, here's what he said. I used that song because it was Rizzo. That kind of took care of me. What? Things weren't really working my way in Chicago, so it was in a way to say thank you to him. Obviously I have a good relationship with him Rizzo jester to Darvish in the moment, throwing his arms in the air before the two disgusted postgame. We actually texted each other after the game, but I think he was pretty happy about it, Darvish said. I know the Padres fans didn't get that. But if you're the Cubs, you're like, Well, look at you using Rizzo's walk up song pretty pretty awesome. Darvish what people were just killing him Flu Darvish in the whole deal, and then he goes to South Bend to throw and he lasts an inning. He goes. I can't my arm hurts. He's done for the year ever is like what a bust right Then he goes out. He has a lousy start to 19. And then the start throwing more fastballs and bam! They fix it, Tommy. How did he gets him in the right direction, finishes the season strong and he's great during the Covid shortened season, second for saying, Okay, well, my issue originally, as I mentioned before, I didn't think you should have been a co I thought that After his time with the Dodgers. I said, You know, he can go someplace else. He can't really help the Cubs. But then you remember the story when the Cubs went to Los Angeles, and there's Darvish ducking away from the media hiding in small places because he was ducking the L. A media because they were gonna ask him all the questions about how you fail. Like I didn't like that either. And I'd like, so what's the What's up with you? Darvish? What's up with you? And then? Of course, the other storyline is I don't know if I want to play anymore, right? Let me see how they're handling Covid, which I respected him. Get that. Are they taking this stuff? Seriously, Because I can tell you. If not, I'm going back to Japan. I'm not going to get myself sick. My family gonna retire. He says what he's gonna do. I just you know so those things but Just watching the game yesterday. I really like what I saw there and just the resolve of the Cubs being able to win that game. That's what I liked, and we talked about well played games a couple of days ago. Talking about the, uh The first game between the socks and the Jays. This also very well played game. Not a lot of hits, but I've got some really good pitching on both sides. Yeah, really solid, But I thought the meat they're playing the song was awesome. Pretty funny, Awesome. And your guy wisdom by the way. Another another hits, one for four. That guy just keeps delivering man. He just keeps delivering. And we'll have risen with us tomorrow to preview the Cardinals series. They've got the day off today. We were doing the Matthew and I. Their plane got back in Chicago. 11, 11, 30. A lot of those guys have boats. I will guarantee you if they're not all right. They didn't sleep on the boat last night. Those guys are on the water by eight o'clock guaranteed by as has a cool boat. Hayward has an amazing boat. Rizzo has a boat. I don't know who else but there's a bunch I will guarantee you. They are on the water with their cell phones turned off today. Good for them. They deserve it After that. Victory against the Padres and winning that series. For sure. By the way, I I miss buyers at shortstop when I'm watching the Cubs, right. It's just not as smooth was with Alcantara. And Hap in the middle of the infield. Did you see their lineup yesterday? By the way, the stolen base by the way by the the Padres, and that's another reason why I like the Padres is because they kind of turned the clock back a little bit. They believe in him. You know him the other way. They love the stolen base. I think the top team in baseball and stolen bases, But you saw the song based by the Padres yesterday. That happened. Didn't quite have the bias flourish with the tag just just laid it on there. Like Yeah, and there's an outfielder is playing in field, right? Exactly. It wasn't as smooth. You know what I'm saying? Look at their lineup. Mallard. You see the line update ran out there. The Cubs, right? Yes. Okay? Patrick Wisdom is your starting third basement. Ortega is your starting center fielder with a robust 1 56 to 29 to 50 slash line. Contra is your starting shortstop? P. J. Higgins is your starting catcher? Okay. If I had said to you at the start of the year. Hey, man, they are going to have to Play the Padres in San Diego against Yu Darvish, who is rolling like 11 and one in his starts. Rolling And that's going to be there like four guys that weren't You couldn't have name those four guys. Do you know why the Padres were a great bet there? Look at that lineup. Looks like the lineup after you've won the the division in there before and what's wasted. All right, You guys get the plate and that's what that looks like. Right? It looks like the lineup after you've won the division. And so that's why the difference between now and April is put that out there in April, See if it comes to one. You have no opportunity? No, almost no hit with that lineup, But now they're playing. As Anthony said, Well, ask him again tomorrow with this chip on their shoulder. And it is Can't wisdom Ortega are Contra Higgins. Four. Your starters. Keep in mind. The Cubs just scratched out four hits in that victory, But the difference between April and now is, is that you found a way to win. Otherwise, you're just folding the tent like, Yeah, we're gonna lose this. And you realize that their bullpen came in Rex Brothers, your guy Rex Brothers, Rex brothers, always holding the game an inning. Didn't walk him in and give up a hit two K's 18 pitches 11 for strikes. Then they go to to Pere. It's guide, then, just phenomenal two innings, no hits, no walks. 24 pitches 16 for strike and three punch outs and then Kimbrel comes in and is literally unhittable. He's throwing 99 on the inside portion on the black of the plate and No shot. Yep. No shot And I was argue with Gordon Witmeyer, the other day G Dub G dub cub from NBC Sports, Chicago said that will be the first guy they trade. Hold on a.

I hope you guys are having a great day. Yes, Happy Friday. Party time. There you go. Yeah, I love the Cubs chat today about you know, like how amazing this season really has been. I think it's one of the best stories in baseball. You know. David Ross is coaching Austin. The players are responding. Wrigley Field has a lot to do with, you know, after Covid these players really like, are like thriving, playing in the beautiful letter that we've had I just don't I agree. You know, I think you know Zach Davies and Kyle Hendricks. You know, Alot J and Trevor Williams. I mean, it's not good enough rotation. You know, also that have to get better. And then I just want to touch on Kris Bryant situation because I mean, we've had so many winning seasons with them now and it's like are we really Is he really going to leave next year? I mean, are you kidding me? This guy is that big of an influence impact on your baseball team. So I mean, thanks, guys. For listening to the only thing about Chris. Brian. Go Cubs go. I think, Andrew, I think Andrew's first in line to get a wrigleyville jersey first. Yeah, Yeah. Second of all, Why would Chris Bryant leave Because somebody's going to pay him more? They want respect. Yeah. And I think there's I think there's a part of it that his family feels disrespected by the Cubs and the Cubs fans over the last couple of years, so that will play into his. Yes, I don't think he's like I know he loves playing here. I know. How could you not like playing in an atmosphere where there's 40,000 people pretty much every day when People are allowed in at 100% capacity. So what, like that? Can you imagine like it's a It's a grind. To play in front of 40,000. "In this in this, Jesse, I think this is an important thing to point out. You don't go trading Yu Darvish like they did unless there's some kind of a mandate in place. Where you got to get rid of salary. I mean, I understand that you you wanna Yu Darvish is a depreciating Asset. If you want to look at it like front office executives, Theo he's getting older. He still cost money, and they're probably trading him at his peak like you can make an argument that Now is the time to trade you, Darvish. But man, if that's what you're getting back for it roll with Darvish Roll with Hendricks Roll with Rizzo roll with Bryant and contrary And what you've got and hope that these last you know, 34 years haven't been indicative of where they're going to be in that you can change something up. I just don't know that trading your best player and he was their best player last year is the right way to do things if you're trying to win, but you know there. Probably not. Probably not exactly right. What's next might be even the bigger decision for Jen lawyer because with Darvish you were a little bit caught in between. They were good, but not really elite. Now you're certainly not even close to your further from that. So you probably have to push all your chips in on some sort of a bigger rebuild as message as much as everyone in the game hates that. Yeah. I mean, you put you put it pretty well there. Well, the contrary. I'm Brian. I'm I'm curious. I'm curious. Jesse what this cub's roster looks like at the beginning of the 2022 seasons, not just a 2021 season like you know, if if contracts were to be moved Like reasonably soon wouldn't shock me at all? No, no. How about August? 1st Forget about 22. How about August 1st? Because there's no way Craig Kimbrel or Kris Bryant is on this roster on August 1st let alone will sicken trips. Michael. I mean, I mean, the cops gonna be like paying down Kimbrel, because unless unless he comes out and is the camera of the fast, nobody's gonna want him yet. Have a good first half. Maybe the Padres will be interested in the 77th inning. Arma Jeff. I don't know that's a No. No. You know what the Padres has done the Craig Kimbrel trade. Thank you, baby. They came to regret that that's a good time. I. In fact, I think they gave up Max freeze in that deal. So, uh, Jeff passes? No, but that's That's isn't that part of this right? Like If you're gonna win, sometimes you're going to give up things where you look back and go. Damn. Of course I'm Matt. Right. Jeff Passan joining us for another moment here on ESPN. 1000 Jeff, We are the home of the white sacks. So I'd like to ask you a quick, white says question here because a lot of fans are asking me. What is the latest on Liam Hendriks? Is there any chance the white sex actually entertain? Going out in signing him, or is he going to cost too much money for their appetite? I don't know if it's gonna be the money that bothers them. I wonder about the years. Uh, Liam Hendriks wants four years. I'm not sure he's going to get that from the White Sox. I did that Executive survey. Jeff and I asked, you know who's gonna most likely be overpaid this winter. The top two hamsters were Liam Hendriks and Alex Parliament. Always the closures that take the abuse. I feel Yeah, they really do it Z not not fair to them because they look if I'm the White Sox. I sure as hell want Liam Hendriks. "For all the deal that he makes like smell, where he might have overpaid a little bit being aggressive gets you in there when there's a deal like the Darvish one to be had And they were look they've been in on this. For weeks now, like this is not something that just cropped up. They've been working this for a while now and finally got to the place where they were able to execute it and You know, if if Jed Hoyer is talking with AJ Preller about Yu Darvish, he's talking with others, too, and if he starts in with others and goes back To AJ Strickler and says Ultimately, this is the best deal that I'm gonna be able to get. What does that tell you about the rest of the market and their aggressiveness and their desire to win? I'm trying to win a world Syriza in 2021. I want you Darvish on my team. Yeah. Other teams in that Why aren't other keys in there clamoring for him? It's It's absurd to me that baseball is now at the point. Where the second best pitcher in the National League last year doesn't have a market. And it makes me wonder what happens with the best pitcher in the National League last year who happens to be a free agent right now, and it's seeking money. Ah, lot higher than what you Darvish is going to get paid. Yeah, And that's what I said earlier work backwards from the trade. And you realize for whatever reason, Jeff Jed Hoyer didn't have the leverage Cup fans wanted him to have He didn't have the leverage and there weren't enough teams involved..

"Dick. I'm gonna put you back on hold. Let's go to David Whiting, Indiana. Hello, Dave. Hey. Good morning. You know, um I don't mind the trade Don't mind it at all. I know the rebuild needed to be done well when you lie at the end of the season, saying this is not a rebuilt and then you blind side, not only the fans But the man himself, Yu Darvish. So players, arm or conscience these days, they're more conscious of where they're going. The money's there. Of course. You see it a lot with the MBA. You see it with the Chicago Bulls. Noble wanted to come here after guard pack. So now I'm looking at this. Mm. Hell needed to get bullpen help. You didn't get any So is this a product off? Rickets holding him back. Money wise now, now that I'm seeing this, or is it they just want to tear everything down from the ground up. We got a bag of beans back. Were Darvish. There's the Cy Young runner up. I wouldn't have minded if we got someone with a little bit more caliber. I know you guys said Prospect lives don't matter. Way it does in the mat in the fans eyes and that's who who's been there when they were down in the dumps when you promise in organ is a fan base. So loyal that the Cubs are you blindside them with this. On Do you Don't even tell the man Harvest. About it. How does that look to the other leads to the league? How does that look to the fan base? I mean, now I'm looking at Rick. It's like he's the one that was holding the little back, inciting what we needed a leadoff hitter and a blue pin, and that's why all the shuffling of the roster just a fit some square pieces in a circle. Now it's coming to fruition that these managers wanted to get this World Series title. We got it with the core. We got we were looking. We're banking on potential. We didn't trade forever after 2017. We traded Quintana because we wanted to catch lightning in a bottle. Be traded for Chapman. I mean, it's an argument to save Chairman Goddess that World Series title or it just gave us a little jolt. But in the long run old boys in New York and all star hitting 40 home runs this season back to back off star season. And then you look in the Royals. I forgot the guy. We traded to the Royals. Uh, big Dominican solar. But last year he was he was a bit of a dog when he was here. Yeah, He was like a game. We're making the wrong moves with potential wise men in the long run. I think so. Larry is going to be a better hitter than for Bert. I mean, it looks like it looks like it. It does. DJ LeMay do be gentle man who was an all star. We let him go. All right, guys. Happy New Year, man. They don't come back. They David wouldn't come down a little bit, Dave. We appreciate it, but that's what I'm not surprised. That compares with that upset. Um Field steps down with a year to go on his deal and video probably saw what was coming up. He probably saw the Rikers was going to spend any money. They're going through all the losses and money losses with the cove it in the pandemic. Annette Why am I going to be in a situation even in order to get paid for another year? Why am I gonna be in a spot right? Can't do anything. And I'm gonna have to try to rebuild and that at the end of the year say sorry I'm gone. Fio did he got out when I get it was good. If you look at it, maybe he did the right thing for this organization. But Jed Hoyer. I cannot wait. He's gonna talk later on today Around 10 o'clock. "Happy Tuesday to everyone. We're just a couple of days away from finally turning that calendar away from 2020 and on 2021 with brighter days ahead the light at the end of the tunnel. So much good hopefully coming up in the next new year, and we can flush this one out. We'll be better for it in the long run, but it sure sucks in the middle of it. Sylvie here with Tyler, AKI and Waddle is off. I am thrilled. Thrilled. Absolutely thrilled to be on the air today, and we do have a short ride for a bowl game. So if you want to get in today, and you're one of these guys who loves to listen to the show. But the may calm the four o'clock hour make home for 35 o'clock hour. Um, that's not gonna happen today. So if you want to get in and voice your opinion about anything on your mind, but the big story today is And it's something that we were all over yesterday. We've been all over for the last week or two. Jesse Rogers is the best in the business. He's flexing his muscle again. Over the last 24 hours is he was on for Carmen and your co yesterday and he was telling everyone even when the Blake Snell deal went down that, eh? Don't dismiss this Yu Darvish to the Padres deal just because they got snow. Matter of fact, it's really close to happening, and he came on the show yesterday in the three or four o'clock hour and was telling us that he thought it was 78 80% chance of happening and Sure enough, right When we were off the air it happened. So if you want to voice your opinion, this is a story that we've sort of talked about in Waddle and I have kicked around and we have said if they do trade Yu Darvish, like we knew the stuff was Schwarber. We knew Kris Bryant was a possibility. But we thought there would be different ways to still win that. Maybe you just load up with pitching. You have a different approach with the bats. These same haters weren't going to get the deal done against the Marlins are against the Brewers and years passed in the postseason or against the Rockies. But maybe you would win in a different way. And you put more money into pitching because you are flush with cash, even in a pandemic, And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. So we had been throwing around the last Couple of weeks if the Cubs would trade Yu Darvish, are you going from? Retooling the cute word or term of retooling to really rebuilding. And maybe it's not a full scale rebuild of what the Cubs did Winfield for Scott here in 2011 that but If it walks like a document quacks like a doc. Let's call it a duck here. All right. So are we Are we going through rebuilt and let me get to a couple points because I think this is a really nuanced conversation. And I've I've read lots of good points from experts. I've read a lot of good points from Cubs fans in my Twitter feed. And and there on both sides of this thing. That on the surface on the surface when you're talking about trading Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres, and he's a 34 year old picture and he's going to turn 35. In August and knowing that he is coming off his best year as a cub, But knowing that he still getting older that there's a lot of miles on that arm and that he certainly his Cubs run Was a roller coaster to say the least. Do I have a huge huge issue with the Cubs trading Darvish in carrot? Teeny to the Padres? The answer is no. You have a huge issue with the return. Zach Davies is not a bad picture. He is younger. Now he's on in his free agent year. So you're getting him this year to eat some innings, the Darvish would have eaten And you are you are getting prospects. Four of them who are very, very young. And right now not ranked in the top 10. Now there are reasons for that when you are very, very young, and I asked Miller this and I asked Carmen, this Fernando tattoos, junior guys. What was he ranked when he was in the White Sox system while you probably wasn't even in the top 20 because he was only 17 years old. He was 17 or 18 years old. When you are so young at 17 or 18. You're not going to make it in the top 10 because there is little body of work. Um, on this. Remember coming off a 2020 season where there was no make minor league baseball. Everything was stopped that there was no room for them to go up in these rankings. So owing Cassie, the second round pick A manner Reggie Preciado. In Santana, 18, 18, 17 and 20 years old, they may turn out to be very good. Who am I to say this? I'm not going to tell you that the return on this. No, It wasn't top 10. Could they turn And could this be? Ah, good haul in the long run? Yes, so again. On paper. Yu Darvish carry teeny. I'm not gonna hammer the cubs for what they got back. A lot of baseball insider said they should have gotten more. I understand that. But today, I'm not going to sit here because Who the hell am I to tell you? I'm not Keith Law. Ah, lot of these G m's don't even know what they're trading at the time..

"Cubs Trade Yu Darvish yesterday at least we got word. We're still waiting for the deal to become official once the medicals are given the OK, but they received four prospects and Zach Davies back in return. We've been talking about that. We just spoke with Jeff passing on top of the hour about the return that they were Seve and Jesse Rogers. Jeff Miller in for Common a year ago. Today, we're also letting you the fans sound off on what you think about. That deal and where the Cubs are currently at. Let's try Gerard, who's in New York. Gerard, You're on ESPN 1000. The going, guys. This trade isn't isn't upsetting to me at all. Paying attention to the gradual things over the last two years. It's It was bound to happen. It was it was good seeing Darvish on the mound. Those Those two good years. We had him will year and a half. I'm not upset at this trade at all. They The thing I am upset about is that the lack of transparency with the organization and the fans It's it sucks that you Darwish had to find out on Twitter as As we did it should. They should almost be a separation there. It's that's only upsetting thing is is leaving until feeling that's the only thing really. Well, honey, let me address that. Because you know this my job reporting stuff. You know, you have that sense of humor. He did not find out on Twitter. He did not find out on Twitter. Maybe there's a Moment in time where he found out some information on Twitter. He knew what was going on by mid afternoon. I just I know that I know his representatives knew that. But you know how he can be a little goofy, so, especially on Twitter, So I won't blame the Cubs for that. I think his people knew what was going on. But look, I've been reporting since summer that there was gonna be a bloodletting. People were listening. I kept saying now I'm not agreeing with it that the idea that we're crying for others just reporting it. This kind of thing. The salary duck was happening. Um, so I was just prepared for I'm not sure maybe other people weren't prepared for whether it was right or wrong. Listen, if I were Coast fan, I would be upset because where they're currently at a like Look, put the financials to the side. A Zafran I don't give a damn You run the business, however you want But don't expect me to be happy about and like you're just just yet. This is where I disagree a little bit You mentioned, you know being transparent. Honestly, they can't tell me. You know what we need to reduce payroll because of where we're at. I don't care. You know what? It's your business like you mentioned the Picasso painting. You are an ownership of the Picasso painting. The moment you choose to sell, you're gonna have plenty of money. There's gonna be plenty of suitors or happy to pay billions of dollars for this entity. If you could no longer do it. I think the problem we've gotten too in in 2020. Is that and and I'm guilty of it as much as anybody else. So I'll admit this where I buy into the idea of, you know, not having to pay money for the elite talent because eventually you know it's a bad contract. You know what You're making plenty of money hand over fist. That's fine. You should be able to do both. You go out and scout young players who you can add to your minor league system. And at the same time when you're you know, in a top three market in the in the US, you should be also able to put a competitive team out on the field and in the National League Central It's there for the taking The problem. You know, people get upset when you have poor performance in the playoffs. Unfortunately, if you listen to Theo and Jed, talk time and time again, the problem is the small sample size of a playoff series, you know, and especially when you reduce it down to a three game. Syria's that you can lose two games to any team in baseball. That's just the reality of it. So the playoffs are not the are not always indicative of good teams. Winning? Sure the Dodgers it took the Dodgers 34 crack said it before they finally were able to win the World Series. And people have been telling you year after year that they've got one of the best teams in baseball. That's the problem with the baseball playoffs. But the truth is that the N L Central was there for the taking this year. And if you had you, Darvish on this roster with as many holes as it has, I think you could have easily seen the Cubs make the playoffs And maybe you'll get lucky. Maybe you win that two individuals to get to say no. No, but nobody wanted to see you back. Come on. You had to improve, Okay? And that that's the better argument. Why not signed power instead of subtract Darvish? Why not signed George Springer toe to play center? Okay, you let go of shortbread. You save a few bucks there. Move half over the left. Sure the better answer. Then just bring everybody back to contend because they've tried that. They've tried that you're right. And that's being between their card and their good. They're not a leak. And how many times can you be good and not elite? Before you realize I gotta make some changes..

"Sure, but that's always short lived right because the expectations were raised after 2016 hands. It doesn't help. All of the hype that surrounded the team. You Everyone said when they went in 2016. Everyone felt like, Oh, it was a year early, and this was a championship window. That was gonna be open for five years. And you know what? A lot of ways the cubs were. They made the playoffs. You know what was it five out of six. Or you know how much I'm trying to remember Now, Officer on my head, But like, well, four out of five with mad, But then they made it together. First year after him, right? Yeah. Last 5% 5 of the six seasons. And But the playoff disappointment, you know is what I think leaves Cubs fans with a sour taste in their mouth now and today. It's just kind of like the exclamation point of. Hey! You went out. You signed Yu Darvish to a big contract. And even though he dealt with injuries that first year he had really lived up to that contract the Let last season no doubt. Yeah, last year and a half since he got healthy, right? And now Now in a bad division. We understand your I mean, we understand you're telling everybody you're hemorrhaging money, biblical losses as Tom Ricketts told you, Jesse, but you know, at the same time, this is a very winnable division. And if you just get into the playoffs if you've got a couple of good top and starters, you could make some noise. I think I think obviously you can't have it both ways. But comes face are annoyed because They haven't lived up to the expectations since 2016 and now I You look at this trade and there's nothing you can really say. Well, what this is the guy we're building around. It's almost like it. You say rebuild isn't rebuild, or is it straight salary dump? Yeah, certainly a salary dump. No doubt about that. I mean, it's it's a rebuilding the sense that You didn't get two guys, They're gonna help you assume he's even 2022. You know, that's that's where it's a regal. It's not immediate help or or near immediate help. It is down the line and again. We don't even know if anything's for really legit, you know, and they'll be players that I've looked into it over the last 12 hours. There's upside. Insist there is that. 18 1920 year olds. So who knows, And none of them are like that can't miss 18 1920 year olds, none of them But there is there is upside and there's this and that second round pick and out of Canada while he's intriguing. Yeah, I think companies wanted more for you. Garbage bin. Intriguing it upside. Well, look with the Padres Do the Padres made two deals Get Blakes now and Yu Darvish, and they do not give up six of their seven best process. Right? J. How's that? How's how's it possible? Was it not possible that Tempus is. Listen, You want him? You've got to give us something. They got one guy, right? They got a picture. Patino, you can't cry. They got him. So they got somebody, but, you know, somewhere along like, okay, give us that the seventh best. We don't want your first or second, you understand? Give us your seventh best. Give us something, but that's not what the comes. Got The one well. Going? Just not say I mean little caveat. I mean, maybe the Cubs They're scouting these guys different than then. Who's making those lessons? Yeah. Gotta give a little better for the culture. They might see something that some some, you know, ESPN guru doesn't just use but you're right. You wanted library tourists, which is a can't miss. You wanted Eli, which was a can't miss. That's the answer The question. Where is the can't miss? For God finished second inside young, Maybe the tie this all together, you're and that's the thing is, I think we get obsessed with the numbers on these lists. The reality. Yellow is first of all. The Padres have one of the best farm systems and baseball's They do so their top 10 You know, are not saying exactly so, like just because you're not getting one of their top 10 prospects doesn't necessarily mean that you're not getting a good player. The other reality is that the difference, I guess between someone like laboratories. Is that when we all knew tours was close to the majors, and as you mentioned Jesse, these players that they've acquired are not necessarily close to the majors, and so because there's just like we're talking about there's going to be some development that needs to go into this and You know, that's maybe you look at the other thing. Have the Cubs really been able to develop their young players? Can't you switch again? Going back to the rhetoric? I just wish there were even Maura front. Now. They said they were gonna be some tough decisions, but it should have been like, Look, we have failed. Were opened anything. It could be a retool. Could be a reset could be rebuilt. I don't know. It takes two to tango. We're gonna listen and everyone we know that it hasn't been good enough. You know what I mean? That's like the rhetoric was. It wasn't like that, and I think it may be, And that's why I'm more focused on that. Then then the actual trade because we don't know what the other offers were for Yu Darvish. Maybe this was the very best he could do now. Of course, you could have said, no. I'll hold on to him and and wait this thing out Trade try to trade someone else. I feel like there are more moving pieces balls in the air about the actual trade. But the rhetoric that you can choose you can choose what you say. And they certainly made it sound like Oh, it's not gonna be any sort of a terror down. In fact, I think cricket's used those words. And to me if I was a fan of the more upset with that, Wait a minute. You were transparent years ago. You should have been a little bit more transparent. This guy 32nd side young, but we just got to liking him. Just got used to liking this guy..

"Rick. Tidwell wants through a tennis ball at his donkey thanks for that. A couple of minutes left in the show and the padres have set the hot stove on fire. Firebomb the hot stove first of all the blake. Snell trade out of the blue more or less. It's now being reported by john. Hayman that Hocine kim will be signing with the san diego padres They said At least four years guaranteed around eight million per year and now there is a rumors. There are rumors. I should say that the padres are pushing to get yu darvish from the chicago cubs. Darvish is thirty four years old And he had a great season Only twelve starts obviously but it was so great in fact that he was second the trevor bauer and saigon voting and ever since that meltdown that yu darvish had in the world series playoffs He's been great is three seasons with the cubs who. I thought overpaid him. But he's had a three six. Oh so. I don't know the padres are given up as i talked about. Mckenzie gore. They're not going to trade mackenzie gore. Are they well is darvish or rental. He's anything bought anything but a but he's anything but a rental. He has three years and fifty nine million remaining so i would think that they would have to eat some that salary in chicago. Apparently they wanna get rid of them. But i think if mike clemenger was still healthy maybe he was healthy. They wouldn't be after darvish but they're looking at the rotation paddock three will now paddock would be your fourth starter and you can go met snell or darvish. You have basically three aces. That'll win on the turn. And the river. Seven card stud seriously they they do not want to stand there and let the dodgers run away with it. What are you gonna do if you're san francisco and colorado and arizona. You stand there and go. Hey look the dodgers are better than us. The hell can we do. The padres are like no no no no no no. It's about us and when you think about this is what the angels really should have done with. Mike trout and they've never done.

"Imagine the hall you would've got for Chris. Brian, if you traded him. Now he's entering is gonna be a free agent after next season. He's had some injuries hasn't been The M V P. Kris Bryant that we saw a few years ago. I think a lot of teams are still very high on Chris Brian. I think when or if he hits free agency, he's still going to get a huge payday. Not what we anticipated early. I mean, we're talking Chris Brian Hall of Fame for a little bit there that were way all were kind of thinking that Kris Bryant $3 million. And now he'd be probably very happy to be $200 Million. Chris Brown, right? Yeah. I mean, I think that's probably the deal. He's still lying. You know, I just don't know what trading Kris Bryant does Right now this offseason. I think you could get some more. Value form if you know he's having a huge year, But the Cubs aren't playing great, and there's sellers at the deadline instead of buyers, and then you move. Kris Bryant might be able to get something but, you know, I don't anticipate Cubs and some are feeling like this. A big rebuild or anything like that. I don't really think that's the case won because they don't have the pieces. I mean, Kyle Schwarber a couple years ago when I got you a ton of a ton of talent and return Like Right now. They don't have a ton of pieces that you could move to spark a rebuild me think about what the White Sox said. They got get had a guy like Chris Sale to move Jose Quintana to move. Those were team friendly contracts. Those guys were locked up. All of a sudden there's not really I mean you gonna trade you. Darvish Yu Darvish has the most value that team by farm. He's coming off. A huge here he was in the Cy Young conversation has a fairly reasonable team friendly contract. That's a guy if you trade Okay, then I'm like, all right, that's one rebuild and urine rebuild, but You know, it's it'll be really interesting off season, but I really do think you're gonna see a lot of players. At least the top tier free agents like Bauer really wait out to see how the offseason plays out so he could get a deal that he's been eyeing. Let's get back to camp here in a minute. First, let's get the cars with Mary Vandeveld. It looks pretty good.
