And i got the dodgers rockies on right now rockies wanting way out of trouble yeah they are and yankees lost their opener and the bronx and we're just getting back to see and fans in the stands chris. That's what i liked the most. You know it's not most places on full or anything like that but it is good to see people in the stands and not crowds and you're right in denver. Look out of looking at the crowd. You're right there's a lot of people there yeah. I don't get it now behind home plate it's sparse spread out but if you look wild. Is the jam packed and even other other parts and apart. like they're not social distancing. Yeah but i don't. I'm not sure what's going on. Yeah my buddy. Rod who lives in denver said to me that he was thinking of buying a ticket today. But you know with the big numbers. He just one sure yet. You know what i mean. He was like. I wanna go. He's a baseball fan. But then i look at that crowd. I don't know if i would be in that crowd today. Chris and i love baseball. "To pay a price for what we choose to pick and just hearing bits and pieces of your story and a lot of the stuff you just described their the mistakes that you made. I know there's so many guys who they feel like they've accomplished stuff at work or in their career or they're trying to establish themselves as a quote unquote man but they've also got this whole list of failures in the back of their mind ways that they've messed up and they've sand and they've fallen short and so for them to think through like man i. I don't even know how. I could possibly try to lead my family to jesus or like point them to jesus. I got way too much. Shame i imagined you may have felt that once or twice in your life like how do you go from the spot where you're like am i even worthy to try to point my family to jesus where now you're man who's trying to point your kids to christ like how do you make that shift mentally well. Cer- processes is not overnight miracle first of all. We need to understand. The most important thing that i had to learn more than anything was grace that was given to me. I didn't deserve and when i started understanding. That second. Corinthians twelve nine and he said to me migraine sufficient for you for my strength. This made perfect in weakness and we have to understand that we are weak and his grace is more than enough for us. So when you can understand. Grace's don't deserve it. He gives it to me anyway. That's when you start to make the shift and and understanding of the importance of who you are as a man. I think a lot of guys struggle with that because a shortcoming falling apart a life is a part of everything that we've got to deal with even being successful whatever You know. I think so many guys look at you know athletes and think they have it all together and they winning all these wonderful things but after ended the day if they never come to these biblical principles one day. The storm is gonna come where the enemy himself is gonna show up and he's gonna destroy everything around you and your life is gonna come unfolding. You know your kids are gonna be in some kind of awful situations that you never could imagine because we don't think about it and when you start understanding different in the bible's like job. He had everything and he was a righteous man and then the storm came just wiped out everything. But you know the thing about a man like him. He stayed in his character with god he never left place with god and he fought through that and he pushed through that process and then got into giving him a double portion of blessing because he was faithful. And i think that's what we have to learn to be like you know. I wasn't like that when i was young and plan baseball and i had everything You could say from early standpoint..

"They had a lot of respect for us in game. Six in eighty six world series is the buckner game. It's famous of course in boston. But in that game right. Johnson double switched you out which is crazy. 'cause you're bad in your glove. But so where were you. When all that went down i was in clubhouse clubhouse watching the game 'cause i got double sweats and i was really pissed off because i figured nobody gonna lose. I want to be on the field. You know with the team and everything and and it worked out. It worked out well for us. You know we we. We came through game sex. You know with two outs you know and just base it after bass hitting before you before you know was to play with billy buckner. Who was a great filter. You know who got a lot of credit for the player who was what outstanding play was. It was just that one play. You know trying to beat. Mookie wilson to the base and took his eye off the ball in the ball went under club. And we're gonna win game six. We still had to come back and win game seven and you get to go back whether it's thrown out a pitch at the new citi field or back to an old timers game at yankee stadium. I'm wondering now the adulation. The fans still love you like back then. It probably helped power some of the the bad decision. But i wonder now if it feels good like you've you've changed your life you've got a story to tell and they still love you. I would think it's a different kind of feeling now for you like you can. You're almost able to kind of get it whereas when you're a kid and it goes to your head and now does it feel good to go back and know they love you after everything that's happened because when you're a kid you don't get it you don't you don't understand it. You make so many stupid mistakes and when you go back now. The people just really appreciate me for who i am. You know a lot of people you know that. follow me. Appreciate me for who. I am not on the baseball eight at miami for my baseball skills and everything but they remind me for the manda becoming and the way i stand up and what's.

"You really try to defy keith. Hernandez is inaccurate. Team that a myth or truth now is the truth. You know it was. It was about a disagreement you know wanted to report. It came and told me that he got into my business about me. I shouldn't be worrying about negotiate my contract right now spring training and then i just kinda got into own pitcher day you know but i tell you what i have. Nothing but respect for him. He taught me so much about the game of baseball. What incredible plan. I q that he had. He taught me how to hit. Left hand pitching. He taught me how to the other way. And i remember. I hit like fifteen home runs the other way and mostly because he taught me how to do that in wally bet and a guy that cartoon fans hated. I think you should. You're going to beat the little redneck up cardinal fan by the helped you with that one. I know they probably wanted to. I know he used to run a lot for. Loudini said a lot of things in the paper and and i'm quite sure you know i. I felt that way a few times to you know but he up. He was my teammate. I could tell you like this. You know in our clubhouse it was crazy at times once. We stepped on the field man. We've serious business you know. And you know any ball club you know. Have that at times in the clubhouse can be crazy time when you step on the field. Can you block that out. And i think we were really good at doing that. Being able to block the craziness of a we were out. I think whitey might have hated davey for awhile. Head us believe in that in player wise. We think khoja was number. What we might have boo'd you. But i think they kinda always liked the darrell strawberry. That player was hard not to like. But boy ho joe. I think whitey walked in once. We couldn't get one hundred. Rbi of the mean-spirited about between the teams did not true animosity. Yeah i think a lot of hatred there you know because the fact we had to go through each other and it wasn't anything personal you know far as as being a player but you know you had a different uniform on. We had a different uniform. All you know and we wanted to beat the cardinals. And i'm quite sure they felt the same way of about us..

"At what you accomplished. You ornate time all-star thousand. Rbi right on the nose. It's kind of a cool stat right on the nose. Three hundred thirty five home runs and yet you'll read something well. What might a bed or what. He could have been if he didn't have struggled or demons and i'm looking at. That's that's a pretty damned career. What do you think when you look back. Could there have been more. What could have been more. If i was healthy. You know but. I was broken before i ever put your uniform on which a lot of people don't understand you know with with the issues of my father and the rejection and the abuse in the house in alcoholic and coming home for the last time pulling out a shotgun said he was gonna kill the whole family when i was fourteen and had not been for my mother getting us out of the house. We probably would have killed him that night. So i always tell people paying led me to my greatness and my greatness would eventually me to my destructive behaviors show would could if i coulda shoulda you had a numbers could have been a lot better. You know there's always plays it comes to the big leagues that you see that. Have the potential to do. Great things will a numbers ever fulfilled the promises over their life. I believe i had a great career. I believe what happened in my career was supposed to happen because in the end it made me the man i am today. I'm doing such incredible credible great work as far greater than base. Wanna think people looking at the baseball stats. Instead of looking at the person that i became. Evangelist travel the country. Two hundred fifty times preaching in large churches in doing a lot of good things and you know helping young people get off drugs in in helping young people not to start on drugs. I think i think those things are more credible than me hitting a three run home or the ball off the same lowest crock. I just had to get that in there. I knew he was going to bring it up at some point. Yes he hit up the clock i would. I would have talk a little cards mets. It was such a fun era. But let's remind folks turn your season around how god can transform your life. Imagine they can find it online in bookstores and it seems to me like that would be for anybody at eighteen year old kid who struggling or a seventy year old grandpa. I would think this as we've seen this whole opioid epidemic hits ages. Yes i it's for everybody is for it's like more Discipleship to new show you how god can transform formula meteorite where you had to take all are in some places in life and none of us have it all together we try to believe that we have it all together but we don't at the end of the day you know and it just speaks to people is in a way meets us right in the midst of everything you think about it what we all been so we all been through a pandemic we were been to a nation racial issues and everything now who is gonna be able to transform and change us and make us better and in these times is surely not the people in the political arenas they don't even like each other so how can they help us. You know. that's the that's the thing we gotta look at you and there's only one person you know. They really cares about us in our deep deep hard times..

All daryl docker dock and darren granted you guys were making mistakes at the same time but you everything. That was unfair to both you. Guys assorted be lumped together. I think so to be lumped together. That was unfair. You know because we have two different personalities and re two different people nobody. Nobody's the same. We just had talent planning to new york at a young age. He was nineteen. I was twenty one. When i came to the big leagues and like i said i had it been somewhere else. They probably would have been a different story. Nobody would ever made the big fuss about it. Even though he's multitalented you know to be able to play at such a high level at the major league level but when you plan a place like new york the spotlight is on you. When you come to the ballpark got forty reporters in clubhouse you go somewhere else you got three you know. So could you have imagined. Excuse me imagine what that feeling like you know and you have to deal with that in. You came back and played at the end. Your career for the yankees. So what. what's the experience. Like on one side of town. Mets yankees and yet joe torry. There has got to be like a father. Figure up. sure you're winning. world series. Have different was your experience in new york at that point with the yankees. Whoa it's very at that time. You know because they didn't have to be a star anymore. I could just be a player. And i play a row and and a lot of times. I didn't have to play. And that would go on to enjoy tori. Always ask me how you feel. And i said okay but if you wanna play somebody else is okay. He goes no. I'm asking you wanna play you. I said well. I feel great and you know joe torry was like a father figure and you think georgia boss. He was incredible the way he loved people and he took you know people that had issues that were broken. He took him in as sons and helped him and he guided him and he gave him opportunity. "That you know. Vaping is not cool. I asked him why why. Why do they star baby and they said because they see celebrities on it and i said vaping is not cool. 'cause you're gonna get some health problems and i try to educate them about. Don't start drinking. Don't start using any kinda peels drugs. Just because you're not feeling well goes through some type accounts and get some help. Get somebody that you can listen to you and can understand what you add instead of using ad because i try to get them to realize that once you start on that it's hard to get off of it and i've seen so many young kids they all dying from from eighteen to twenty five then outliving a dying. They're going pass Marijuana straight to hard drugs you know. And i think kids don't understand that is deadly and that you can die and i take a lot of times you know. We make it as a society that is okay. The you know it's okay. If you wanna use you know feel good to escape from reality is is not because they get addicted and they can't get off over a much of it. Is you get stuck with regret or shame in for you. You're such a public figure when you when something would happen bad. It's in every newspaper it's on tv. I would think that's part of the the hardest part of digging out is everyone's talking about internet's i just wondered. I always hear that. Shame or regret. Is that what addicts sometimes battle to to kind of stay strong and get asked wall a hard process when you have to go through like idea in the public. Is you know everybody has an opinion. And there's no clear understanding because everybody think well because you you're famous you rich. You have everything you should be well while money don't make you well inside and being famous is not going to save you from you know the troubles that are out there. They're real. it's a real society as real reality that we live in and the broken who you are ours real and i think a lot of times people don't recognize they think just because you've played major league baseball. "Yeah you know that was That was like total koto. Bs matter orioles rights. issues. Because you know may fourteenth in california degree teams in texas so states. They had multiple teams. And and you know. Even now the nixon brooklyn i mean brooklyn. I'm sure any territorial right now. Right money to the To the to the knicks and vice versa. So i may happen Whereas with that beal was brokered by my agents Irwin lena Doing that It was the It was the nets Felt as though it would be very detrimental to the nets franchise to deal with the mix and for the discussion whereas You can go anywhere else except dix so graphically You know. I had established governor family and long island. And you know i just kind of look for the close displace Detained the closest place is by default. South affiliate go north of boston and And so was commutable. You know from long island. World manhattan is now containment train income long island. It's a couple of hours right by car. Or whatever. So i oversee hard even knowing the franchise and you know doing so much. Their homework that gets done. These days. I ended up going to philadelphia for geographical. Now when you went to philly doc you became really a more team oriented player than you were in In new york. You had. George mcginnis lloyd free doug collins but you became more of a team ballplayer down with the sixers. I felt as though my squires years in the chain. Yeah and my nazi is. We did play team basketball and In philly with gene shoob You know we tried to play this balance style of basketball but there was a lot of individuality and philadelphia that. It took a couple of years to to to get rid of and even though in that first year he played for the nba championship and Seventy six seventy seven season Lost apartment You know it took several years and some coaching changes in order to really find the team that you know we had eighty eighty two eighty three In which we compete with it but a championship for To times Well actually eighty eighty two and eighty three three times Winning running and eighty three s. You know so When you say that the team game you know probably by you know you start looking at maybe my individual stats and you know there was much higher than aba tire and and with the nets But they were actually the highest with the squires in those first couple years. Charlie scott on the team and Race scott Fatty taylor berry williams jambo jamaicans so curve and and you know the year yield town was on that team and we had albie yankees coach. Albie was really a great coach and And hall of fame scout having loughry in and and billy cunningham so so i was able to be influenced by some Great coaches who were former players and And each had their own style but The fun time fun time for me. Was you know the virginia. Years with the squires and the and the and the nazi is in long hours. So you know that that's always going to be you know. Home chameleon home cooking right. And we're glad to hear that doc. That's for sure. Now i wanna talk to you about one of your signature moves. The baseline move now. The one of the most memorable plays i remember. It was during the eighty. Nba finals It was impossible finger roll behind. The backboard drove past. I think it was mark landsberger on the right baseline and then kareem. Kareem comes into the picture right. Yeah yeah yeah you know that We just kind of call it the layup up and under up in under probably To the thing about it was the hang time now that i was able to To take off you know on the right side of the basket and shoot the ball on the left side of the vaccine and actually took off outside of the the free throw lane. you know. they're lying going down up and down from the free throw line and Just kind of You know sort an air for a while has the ball in one hand hanging out away from the defense and then when it got to the other side of the basket there was an opening too to bring it up and -unding spinning spin off the glass with kareem abdul-jabbar standing there with his arms hoisted. Yeah and he never jumped. And i just remember distinct stinks. Wish lee Fall into the ground. And you know 'cause. I had just exhausted my My job and you know. For whatever reason i could land on my feet are be just hit you know hit sideways and selling the ground and got up and ran down the court and then suddenly you know pants. The next day is just like this series of photos depicting that move in that game. And it's something that you know has lived on all of these years For sure was in college now. They're black and white photo. There's the yeah there. There's a an. I see i see.

"How did you take it to that level. Well i think for me. I mean i went in hempstead. I went to prospect entry school. That was a k. Through eight school in there and they always had these These two baskets that were back to back and one was eight feet and the other one was at nine thirty so so So when i we would have recess. You know we even get a chance to play basketball. Though we we got there and play football and and You know we just do recreation. The in the school in the back and i found it a very very interesting and To to play on that eight faster for five and six. I had a big hand. You know we played Horse would play pig you know spoke to eliminate the next guy right and you know i had a big hand and i could hold the ball with one hand. We didn't always so the basketball sublime you know a soccer ball to stay Dadfar something so you know everybody was everybody was able to gifted and rip it and basketball thing. I was just one of may be cooped players who can hold it in these things in the air with basketball. And then he started on eight v and deal with bill out they when i got tested and they're ultimately on a ten foot basket you know when i was probably like thirteen years old. How so the developing game just came by. If he vaulting from coming you know on on a playground with With lower rams and then finally get into the big ram and then eventually getting to the time And it's so funny. You would say that. Because while i was in college you know when they took the dunk out of the game. And that's right and that was one of my weapons. Then they took it out of the game. So i had a lot of pent up anger wanting to know once. I got to the pros because My that i created for basketball in college. I couldn't walk them all. Yeah that was terrible. I remember that now. You signed a contract briefly with the atlanta hawks stock. And you had the chance to play with pistol pete. Now i know you. And he had some some matchups there In practice or undecided. Tell us a little bit about your time with pistol. Pete marriage katie. No i do He was he was great You know he was a gym rat he he had the whole package. I mean he could. He could shoot the ball from distance. You know there wasn't a three point. Shot around when he was when he was playing in still average over. Forty points a game in college and You know it'd probably would've been fifty. Three point shouted has been out there and it's such as dad was coaching and he And he is he was a great athlete was wiry. he's tall. I mean you know six five six six And so we. When we went we went to camp with a with We hit it off right away and you know. We played a lot of one on one basketball. And there's a there's a tape out there Somewhere where he. And i are in the in the superdome with Dick cabinet okay. And it was for the cavs show and it. Was you know it was the first time when philadelphia played New orleans i'd say the new orleans jazz at that time and pistole was their main guy. And george mcginnis with you know the main guys From from fairly and we did show in the in the state of no fans and it was done at half court and it let me just two marriages actually very special Testimonials the basketball because You know we both love the game so much and And was student at a game. I'm gonna have to check you for that. I know i've seen the Tapes of pistol. Pete and the ice man Playing one on one. But we'll have to check that for you and pistol. Pete marich now on the nets doc. Those early days up the block here at the nassau coliseum. We all love the kids. We love the run and gun style. We love the red white and blue ball. The three point shots and of course was the florida involved. Girls that were in bed. Even we had mr k. billy. Paul spraying taylor. Super j and coach buy lottery. What a ball club right. Yeah yeah billy schaeffer. On their team. John williamson right out scanner my gale of rich jones. Tim bassett Cam use jimbo jamaican. Eventually you know. This is over the three years just their whole assortment of teams brian taylor the bt express. Okay can't forget him from princeton yeah so carribean and ride Believed that was probably my most enjoyable time Pro basketball You know in there. In the winter. I played for the net and then the summer and i play for the west side in the rucker league and a lot of my teammates. Play with me georgie. Button and billy paul's alley taylor and a lot of guys from from the aba as well as the nba. You know played that that game Iraq apprach the So but the nets and in terms of our start. And i'll beginning you know the controversial Trade that got me the nets from virginia squires. You know had that experience with marriage in atlanta and i signed a contract with atlanta. I was really trying to go to atlanta and ended up Back regain your for a second year and then know the deal with Probably back home To long island. And what back to new york. And you know that that part of of my life my time Was very special. You know became a basketball champion. Became an mvp came husband. Became a father is was a thorough like lightning in the bottle. All of those things to happen there between nineteen seventy four. Nineteen seventy right Years to remember we are speaking with the great factor. J. julius erving tonight on sports talk new york now. The merger comes along doc. The nets are poised to play in the nba but then people may not know the knicks. Slap them with a fee to play in the nba. Hey you're infringing on our territory you have to pay. I think it was four point. Eight million or something like that roy. Bo can't pay it. So the nets offer you to the knicks and they turned.

And how do you get well from that. Because after the reforms all the you know she was like you need to take the uniform. You're no longer that player that person that everybody look at you to be and you need to find out who you are and let god you know that he wants to be in manhattan for my lovely wife. You know i. I would be sitting here today. I would be the minister evangelist. Like i am today. You know got caught me on. Simon like i guess. Go priests like billy. Graham did billy. Graham is one of my favorite ministers of the gospel because of his what he did to win souls and you know here it is i once i took the uniform. I've become this whole different person. And you know. I don't want people to think i've sitting here be on. They saying that. I'm better than anybody else. I just made a commitment. I made a commitment in my life. That i was gonna no longer be dallas. Strawberry to baseball. I was going to be the man that i want to be the beach to help so many other people and you know i have a joy of waking up and just helping people i mean. It's such a great joy because so many people helped me. And i've always believed to whom much is given much is required now believe a lot a lot of us. Don't go back and give enough enough to others who are suffering and have trouble and have issues because we think we live behind community gates and we have it all together. We drive fancy cars and you know. We don't have any problems bills and stuff like that but let me tell you. Celebrities have more problems than you can ever imagine. They just hidden because they live behind the humidity gauge right. Yeah i'm sure that daryl now there's another moment in the book where you talk about hitting your home run in game seven of the series and you said that you're you're really didn't even enjoy that. What did you learn from that experience daryl. Well i i think i learned a fact that you know it was. It was a big game and we came back and i was happy for us and and we we won. You know not just all the frustration you know going through a season and what it's like and being in a place in the playoffs and everything and you just kinda miss lee mostly drained you know when the end is over and then you. Sometimes you don't really have that four joy after you have the joy with the guys you but after you go home you don't really have that joy because there s to emptiness still sat on its sitting on the inside as an empty voi- on anti that. We try to fill it with so many things you know like money. Success Popularity drugs women are cars. You know homes whatever it is and it's still there no matter how you at it at the end of the day as your tidal of who you are is completely wrong and i think my title who i was back in was completely wrong. Who has baseball player and not as a man that day. I mean i see life from a different perspective today because you know i get to do something really incredible things and you know i get to meet some incredible people and i get to meet people who are are looking to have a transformation like myself and others and how do you want to know. How did you get there and you able to share that with them and tell them that you know it's free it's about. You know being persistent you know for god surrendering yourself and you get to get to a better place. An understanding of life right now. The your problems have been well chronicled darah. We know that the drugs the prison. What was the turning point in your life when what happened that said to you. I gotta turn this around. Why take a turning. Point in my life was My wife tracy I it was my mother. Praying for me and i was living a heathen life. You know with the lifestyle the drugs or women and all that stuff. And i had to come to a place and that's got you forgive me. I repent and then it was my wife tracy coming into my life god with you heard it restore me rescue me redeem me and restore me to honus lead me back to why rifle place and She was. She's a big part of who i am today. I sit here today because of her. Love and me when i could love myself. And when everybody else has given up she was she was the one that never gave up on me. Why everybody else said he's done and he'll be dead but they were right didn't realize they were prophesized in my life old meet baseball player darryl strawberry. He's completely dead. he doesn't even exist anymore. And then i became this new man. Because i had this transformation. And i've been able to really elevate myself a whole different places. Different act different and and be different and really at the end of the day. That's that's what we really all want at. The end of the day is different. You know like. I said before. I looked at gary carter. Mookie wilson i look at their life and their life was different a great baseball players but they were different at a different perspective about life. You know and. I think that's what i i. I have today. That i didn't have when i was a baseball player. And i'm grateful for my wife tracy because she gave me that opportunity to to be who i was at the time broken but also find a different perspective about life and live a different way and she was there with me throughout the whole process. When everybody has pets us given up on me everybody else do away said nothing to me. She was the only one there. And i'm grateful for that. So we then turn season around The book by darrell. Strawberry comes out on january twelfth folks when you think baseball darrow. When you do think about the game you hit many home runs which ones come to mind and look back and you say man. That was a great moment. I would have to say you know the ball hit off the clock. I think and eighty five guest daily. You know we won that ballgame. One nothing. I think it was a great gaming. We didn't go on to win. That series gets the car without ousted. Beginning of who we were becoming. 'cause we lost in eighty four and then i will say. The ball hit off nolan ryan and the playoffs in the number in the playoffs. I think I think those I think those are really big home runs. That turned the corner for us in that series. And those i always remember. I think I think those are the three run home and hit a solo. That whole runoff nolan. Nolan was on the gym that they can not only run. We don't have ballgame. Houston beat out when that serious and it's over. And so i i think about those moments the great moments that i will always remember and i would always cherish pretty good nolan ryan daryl. Yeah that's for sure Your best teammate. Who was the guy that was there.
