Patrick Mahomes agrees 10-year deal with Chiefs worth $503m
"One of the huge headlines this week was the decade long contract that Patrick Mahomes lands in Kansas City. Will we see a ripple effect from that? Will that affect a deal for Dak Prescott? ESPN is Jeff Darlington. Will you know what? In some circumstances, I could have seen Mahomes getting a contract and maybe influencing the Doc Prescott deal, But the way it worked out, it actually won't know. I had spoken to some people before the homes got his deal done, And they implied that it Patrick Mahomes is in a little bit of a different air, No matter what. Um, Any quarterback that was coming up on his contract was not going to be able to demand that kind of money. The other situation here is that The home's ended up doing a 10 year deal. The contention between Dak Prescott the Cowboys the deck once less years, then the Cowboys willing TTO. Do they want to get five years? Dad wants to get four years. As a result, I think that the better calm pier is not Patrick Mahomes, but it's still Kirk cousins from a few years ago. Prescott now basically threatening to plan to the franchise tag and saying, If you don't pay me now, my price is only going to go higher. So this week will be very interesting. I still contend they going to get something done by July 15th. We'll have to wait and see those relationships take time, though. Nobody is patients in the NFL's. So what are you hearing about the relationship between deck and his new head coach Mike McCarthy. Look, everybody sees this as being really an ideal relationship. Personality wise, they really do meld quite nicely together, Doc, one of the most likeable one of the most enjoyable people to be around Like McCarthy, also the type of guy you can come in there and really work with Jack to a degree. Actually, I know the Cowboys fans don't want to hear this. But the relationship that Jason Garrett had with Jack I don't think it'll be that much different between these guys. And that actually is a good thing despite the outcome of Jason Garrett success, so Ah, lot of people expect this to be a really good relationship. I could, by the way, seeing This relationship prosper this year to the point where Doc next year winds up if he doesn't sign the deal now signs it later so that he can keep that marriage with McCarthy going

"What they do with the position has more so how how they can help us win a championship and I think the quarterback position generally sears teams more like I mean more toward look at teams that are in the Super Bowl's generally you know I think that there teams with quarterbacks who? Who are worth the money that they get paid? I mean you've got some certainly some exceptions there, but generally speaking the reason we're paying quarterbacks is not because. Like I don't know I, don't I. Don't think it's about the position I think it's about. We always here. For example you can't don't running back so it's not worth it, but if you go up and down the list at highest paid going into the season. You Know Julio Jones how many Super Bowl wins. Does he have at this point? You can go up and down the list with with safeties. You can go Khalil Mack like you know clue Mac and I regret the day that my beloved raiders traded him. What's done for the bears? I Aaron Donald? How much so? At some point is the argument. Actually don't pay anybody. Well the argument is you win by drafting well, and that's in this instance. The checks drafted Jamal Adams. Well, you win by getting guys. To succeed on the rookie deals when they're more affordable and that's that's that's why they need to benefit from Jamal Adams first contract, and and the the idea of paying now just makes no sense to the recipe of what it takes to win. The NFL I get you have to pay Patrick Mahomes all this money at this point, but generally speaking. That's not the case. That's the outlier. That's one of the greatest to put on a uniform so. So the idea of paying a gun atmosphere year. As the panthers did with Christian McCaffrey and the chiefs elected you. Patrick mahomes quite honestly is not what you WanNa do the team. You WanNa get the most out of those rookie deals as you possibly can. All right so I'll leave you this. Which Mall Adams in the jets you gotta? You GotTa Bet. If if Jamal Adams. If you're right on this, you get your own private beach in Florida. If you're wrong, you got to move to like the middle of nowhere new. Mexico that's that's the only way on this Jamal Adams playing for the jets this season. Think play at the end of the season. My guess would be holds out. He seems like he's very staunch in that. And I think that the I think Joe Douglas and Adam Gates. Put their the ground. Say No. We're not trading that. And we're not paying you so I. think that it is hold out until Adams. Season and all of a sudden. We're sitting in a love young bell situation. See. I'M GONNA? Love hanging out with you on your Private Beach Jeff always appreciate your insight. Nobody does it better. "No contracts, no compromise. Now users wear usually. Take you directly to I. Take and we'll get there in a second because there was an important guest today Gerald McCoy joined first-day, and he talked about Jerry Jones and the responsibility to speak out on social issues. Before you hear from Gerald McCoy, the cowboys star before we get there though I wanna talk to you a little bit about what we figured. Figured out yesterday in this conversation because I put up a twitter poll, we put it up originally as a question on twitter, and we had such varied responses that put up a poll and flat out, ask you. Do you want to hear from your favorite teams owner? Sixty three percent of you, said no sixty three percent, which is a huge question to me because we in the media, step back and we say wait. We've got to hear from Jerry Jones. We've got to hear from Robert Kraft. We've got to hear from prominent, NFL. Owners Why? Who are we to give that sort of an edict out to any of these owners that they have to do something? Just because we say it's a right thing to do now. Do I think it's a positive for Jerry? Jones to speak out if he's passionate about this movement, Hell yes, do I think there's huge platform availability and opportunity for owners to speak out, and it can be great for the conversation that we're all trying to. To have right now ABSA freaking lutely. Do I think those things? Yes, can I impart the fact that I think those things onto Jerry. Jones, no because I'm not as customer you are. I use the word customer intentionally instead of Fan. When you're a fan, you're spending your time, but most importantly your incredibly hard earned money to support a brand to support a team when you do that, you then get to decide what you're willing. To to support. That's why I've continually told everybody. We've got to stop asking owners to change lease step in, and we've got to start making change with our money. Because when you start spending money or stop spending money on somebody because of what they do, don't say that's the ultimate power. I'm going to do something here. I'm going to listen to you because of you to ask me twenty four. Four hours ago I told you I believe Jerry Jones has a responsibility to speak out because he can do because we've heard from him so many times in the past on issues in general, however, now that I've heard from so many of you and you overwhelmingly disagree I'm willing to evolve my thinking. I'm willing to step back and say maybe the way I see. It isn't the same as. As the way that so many of you see, maybe in fact, you don't want to know what your favorite owner thinks so that you don't have to think about it whatever your reasoning is. It doesn't matter if it's your business to support if he's speaking to his actual customers. Isn't that all that matters now? The question is who are Jerry Jones customers because in some ways he has a responsibility. Responsibility to his fans in some ways I believe that he has a great opportunity to do incredible things for the community, but put that aside. Then you also have to say what's his responsibility to his players, and that's why this is important. Gerald McCoy joined. I take to talk with Stephen and Max about Jerry Jones and the responsibility that McCoy Fay's. He has to speak out on social issues. With everything going on. Well, the Stephen Likes it or not. The most recognizable franchise in the world is the Dallas Cowboys. Okay, so when a situation like what's going on which has been going on, this is not new is not. It's been going on, but now it's been brought to major light with the tragedy of George Floyd people are seeing. Is this really what's going on this has been going on. This is not new. You're just now seeing that. This is how brutal it really is. Well, you have a franchise as recognizable. The cowboys people listened when they speak up and. The owner Jerry Jones who is one of the most recognizable figures in sports history when he speaks, everybody listens while I think at this point in time. I feel. It will be great to hear him. Say something positive or say anything you know I. I love what he's been to the sport. He's been excellent to the sport of football. He's a hall of Famer. At this point is bigger than football, we need him to speak up about life. This is about human beings and equal rights, and it's not what's happening, and it will be great to hear him say. Jared I appreciate you saying that and all jokin Assad joking none. I got a lot of love for Jerry. Jones, I really really do often. I've heard a lot of great things about him. Over the years I've gotten to know him a little bit. I'm very very fond of Jerry Jones, which is why called The Dallas. Cowboys and I call ridsdale ripple, still waiting to hear back from them, because my whole point is I'm looking for Jerry Jones and I'm not gonNA. Let it go because it doesn't matter to me what he says as soon. As it pertains to Capitol Anybody, 'cause you entitled to your feelings, but you can't be as magnetized or as attracted to that camera with everything else all these and then get quiet now. I know you spoke out. What level communication do you believe the Dak Prescott of the world, demarcus? Lawrence is of the world people like that. What level of obligation do you feel?.

I was really surprised that even worked in the simulator and obviously we all know de Hamlin makes a credible amount of time even more inexpensive expanding cars than than a cup car but with today star fall off that we saw that line came into play really early and I was almost scared like what Danny likes joke about is. I don't want to use it too much and show my hand but it was so Dang fast at times that it was it was it was hard not to run in it but we definitely for sure about halfway through the race made a few wrong adjustments and it allowed everybody else to catch up to us but I mean I got braces Darlington race. "Who's on your MBA Mount Rushmore Tristan in Pittsburgh? What he got man. Who's on your MBA? Around Mount Rushmore Jason. So when I think about the NBA. Rushmore I think about the best player the best winner the best coach and the creator of basketball. So I've got Michael Jordan. The Best Player I've got bill. Russell is the best winter undoubtedly. I went back and forth on the best coach but I landed on Mike Chef after some thought. I think he deserves that title after all accolades. Then obviously James Naismith goes on there for creating the game and really laying the foundation for what we know. Is the Greg Abra Basketball Trista next for your take? If you just said those four names to me I would have said you. Lost Your Dang mind but you explain it so perfectly. I got no argument with that. There's a real structure to it. I mean some people might argue the best player but I I wouldn't personally so the logic makes a Lotta sense. I'm all in on that. Best Player winner best coach and the creator of basketball. Like that's a heck of a way to do a Mount Rushmore. End Kudos to you for acknowledging. There's only four faces Mount Rushmore. We're still struggling that on twitter. Kenny and Kentucky. What you got. What's your MBA Mount Rushmore? Yeah I'm I'm not suggesting that I didn't know if he meant NBA general but as far as players that they're telling the history of the game. You have to start with Magic Michael Lebron. There's no question about it. Starting in nineteen eighty and as far as the celtics from the sixties instead of going with Russell. There's too many hall of famers on that team. I'M GONNA go with our back and I think the Mount Rushmore looks great but the one has coach and three players like that. Take a lot Kenny. Because you did a smart thing with the Celtics. I feel like this again. I'm going to go back to chop you smart thing with that ingredient. Because I can't figure out how to quantify those celtics teams because there were so many hall of famers on it they were so dominant. They were obviously incredible and I never really watched them play with any context so taking the coach. There is a great way to do it. Obviously that's a smart move by a lot of you guys want to. Chime in on that end apparently fired everybody up when it comes to deck see. This is why we talk about that all the time. Everybody asked why you'll get fired up about it. You guys seem to want to Chime in. Chime in on it. We're GonNa let that happen so triple eight say. Espn eight eight eight seven nine. Three seven seven six. We're GonNa let you build your Mount Rushmore. Obviously we'll keep taking your take. If you guys want argued back. We will do that as well. That's all coming up plus the Daniel Jones. We've got some Daniel Jones on the awkwardness of playing with ally last year. That you don't WanNa Miss. We'll tell.

"I'm still convinced that the cowboys don't give a damn about the fact that none of us appreciate their time line but we'll get some insight from it from one of our best. Espn NFL insider. Jeff Darlington joins the show now. Next time I feel like every day that you come on any show you have to immediately asked about tax so in your mind. What is the latest that you know attack? What you're saying is pretty spot on. And it's my opinion while we do certainly talk about it every day that That the cowboys intact like if they don't have a hard deadline like they're not gonNa do something just because we're all in agreement or disagreement about what should be done. July fifteenth to me remains in has been the deadline That we should be watching and I think that there's any reason why either side going to cave until that date. I mean go in negotiation. You try to take things as far as you can take them and July fifteenth. I should point out. Is the day that franchise tax players can continue to negotiate beat long-term deals? If you don't get it done by then you can't do it into the season. So that's the date that we should watch and the one thing. I'd say though it's I'll tell you every time I do say something that's like pro cowboys or pro. Dak or anti cowboys. I get texts from the people on each side. Essentially telling me that I'm wrong. So it does feel like there is definitely some resentment that exists on both sides so as much as they want to act like every site is right. It's very clear that there are still some dissension and still some separation that needs to be closed to ESPN NFL insider Darlington Jeff. I hadn't entertainment attorney years ago. That said you know it was a good contract negotiation. Both sides left the table a little unhappy and it just sort of the week things go so I asked you if it is a term or limit. That's an issue here. If the cowboys WANNA go long term and wants to go shorter so he can get paid again. Where is the middle ground on something like I don't know fits and the other problem with that is? I don't know that that's entirely true. That's feels to me to be too simple and I understand that that's not. I'm not saying that anybody who has reported such is wrong. I think that it's actually dead on if you're taking a one sentence wave coming up what the problem is four years or five years but it feels to me when this is all said and done that we're going to look back and be like. Oh that was the real catch and and and I think both sides are smart not to completely negotiate through the public but it just feels to me like if that's the only thing they they would find some ground to to figure it out But to your point I mean the simple again. The simple macro perspective is that if you want four years instead of five you have to give up money and maybe doctor saying well. I four years at the exact same price that you want at five years and that seems to me that that would be a pretty pretty major sticking ground. That probably won't get solved until you have a hard deadline which I keep coming back to. Swipe fifteen which means we get to talk about it every day. Until then right yeah. The other problem is that there's just nothing else to talk about so I understand why We're talking about it and we continue. We will continue to do so but at the same time I do not think that that impacts the negotiations themselves. We're GONNA make a drinking game out of it by the middle of the summer. Espn NFL insider. Jeff Darlington joining the show. So Jeff let's go to the other big topic. Obviously everybody's trying to figure out what could be what might be especially as we look across the board of the corona virus pandemic and how others Other Sports Florida Governor Rhonda scientists has said he wants professional sports to come back in the state. So do you have any sense at this point of how the NFL plans to react? If certain states are at different levels of their openness when it is time to start reporting from from my conversations with people around the league and both Ronald Reagan and who worked for the week One of the big issues here is the competitive balance and that is going to be something that continues to resume through summer. So if the Sanchez says that. Hey we're open. If you can't find a place to play can come down here. That's all well and good but it's still going to have to be complicated. Factors here are rams for instance still planned to hold training camp in La County and if that becomes something that can't happen And the rams aren't willing to go to Arizona what happens then. There are so many every single question that we can think we have an answer to and I know that this is being politicized right. Now it's such an argument on one side of the other but every single question that we think we have an answer to there's twenty questions behind it that also require answers and that to me is what makes us so complicated over the next month or two. It's not simply if it's the state of Florida's open and can invite teams there to play Shouldn't shouldn't that answer the question? The problem is the NFL still saying competitive balance. These even across the map and the one team isn't comfortable doing that. All of a sudden. How do you answer to the rest of the thirty one? Thirty one dollars. Espn NFL insider. Jeff Darlington joining us. I take your take. I'm Jason Fitz on. Espn radio. So I find it interesting Jeff because we've now started here at least from one Major League Baseball player that says I won't play for less and we have to acknowledge that the players have the opportunity to stand up until Talk about what they're comfortable with. I just don't know the answer to this. So what level of sort of power do the players have in the NFL deciding what they're comfortable with? I don't know I mean again. It's like we haven't even gotten there yet right like we're still talking about whether we can let people into buildings or not and how many people can enter each facility. I mean and then all of a sudden it's like have we even thought to ask the players what they're comfortable doing now the NFL in in their defense has been a very good job with the protocols that they have laid out and required by teams to follow which they sent out to all executives last week. To say if you have to you have to have all these components in place before you can open your facility and it seems like it's a very diligent Proposal on their part but to your point when you start saying to a player. Hey you gotta come in if that players not comfortable Here's another factor. That's GonNa come into play across the entire landscape the idea of an unsafe workplace and the litigation that comes from that. And if you don't have Proper like I mean that. That's that's a major thing and I'm safe workplace whether it's a restaurant or team and if you don't have proper protocols in place what happens then and that's with the players union certainly probably comes into this but on an individual level. This is going to get very complicated before it simplified. Espn NFL insider. Jeff Darlington joining us. Right Jeff we buried the most important question. What do you think of the rams new uniforms I I? I don't know why I don't care more about uniforms. Funniest thing to me in the in the world of sports on twitter is not the is not the contentious nature of things like corona virus or the American flag. It is when people get so fired up about a uniform But Wrong Jeff. You're not wrong I just I you know what I liked the helmets. I'm just I like these coming up. I'm with their I I. I'm okay with the helmet swap helmet. That's all we can ask for. Jeff Darling did jeff is always man. We appreciate your time hope when years say thanks for hanging out with this getting the insight there from Jeff and you can take any one takeaway from everything he just said. The the answer is maybe. That's something I keep saying. I'll say on every platform on will the deal get done probably will there be NFL season. Maybe I mean we just can't have set answers to all of the things that you guys WanNa know right now and I understand. Everybody wants to know it but unfortunately it's just not there to be had yet. Look I think the DOC deal is simple? It's GonNa get done before July fifteenth because there's no reason not to but when you look across the Board. I have absolutely no problem coming into all of this and saying first and foremost. Let's be patient. Don't forget tune into the conclusion conclusion..

"The straighttalk is around Dak Prescott and the Dallas cowboys as the guys were joined. Stephen Max joined by Damien Woody today to have a conversation about the timing of all of us. Would it be smart for the cowboys to give Dak big deal? Or should they just keep the franchise tag on him and go from there? This is what Damien Woody Stephen. Am Max I have to say about that. I've religiously stated that if this were Tony. Romo deal would have been done. It's getting to a point where I think it's appropriate to ask the question why this not been done to quarterback is the most important position in the national football league. According to many aficionados you know the history the recent history of the Dallas Cowboys. And I'm upset I'M NOT GONNA lie. I'm upset at the EMMITT. Smith's of the World Michael Irvin's of the world and who I love dearly. Y'All know that but I'm upset at the fact that nobody at least brings up the question. They're like Oh this business this is leverage etc etc. There certain people playing certain positions. You don't do this to not to do quarterback position because that's how vital they are to the success of your franchise and to the culture that is being established and cemented as a franchise. He's not just a football player. When you are a quarterback a franchise quarterback you're not just the data throws the football. You're not just an extension of the head coach. You're also an extension of ownership. Think back to the Colin Kaepernick situation and think about what how. How Dogged Jerry? Jones wasn't this position. You remember that story Damien Woody when they talk about how Jerry Jones called in his players and articulated to them. This is a business meeting. It's not a football meeting and basically articulated to them. Listen this is this Texas this theft down here all right different rules. And if if I'll bottom line is compromised mop bottom compromise. Your bottom line is going to be compromised and one of the things that Jerry Jones had. His disposal was a quarterback that locks that with him and supported his position about making sure that the focus stay on football instead of veteran beyond that. All of these things are incredibly incredibly imported. And so when I hit Emmitt Smith's of the world who's a hall of fame and one of the greatest players we've ever seen in a great phenomenal guy and Michael Irvin a playmaker and everybody just dismiss it as business. It's not just business when it gets to this point at some point in time you're Dak Prescott whether you're quote unquote worried or not is not the issue. The bottom line is you might not be worried. But you're still sitting back going like this so you just go saw all these other dudes and it's been a year that I've been sitting back here waiting for us to reach an agreement. Oh it's like that. I'm not worried about it. There is an explicit a franchise tag offer for thirty one and a half million dollars if I remember correctly but the point is at some point in time people who do right by you deserve to have right done by them and you're not doing that that speaks to something more than just business. And that's what I'm saying about Dak Prescott. Nothing we all can re sitting here right. Now there's no question about it at Prescott. His earned whatever he has come into them as far as a new deal of concern talking about a guy who was a fourth round pick. Who's Bailey's played? Every single game has gotten and better every year but I also thought about this. I think it would be a smart business. Move BUT DALLAS COWBOYS TO SIGN TAC? Long longtime extension. Here's why the NFL has yet. Negotiate is TV rights deal. We also know that the NFL through the news. Collective bargaining agreement will be going to seventeen games so with seventeen gangs. Guess what that means that means of money more money. That's GONNA come into the equation so as much as we talk about Jack and all you know that he deserved money does he. Deserve to be the highest paid. Well guess what in a couple of years when the new TV money comes in when they're playing expanded to an additional game DAK Prescott contract is not gonna look anywhere near what it what we're talking about right now. I could make an argument that it would actually be a bargain if Dak Prescott is still ascending as a quarterback so that would be my argument as to why the Dow was really should be trying to back in instead of waiting and waiting waiting when the new TV money laughing. And you could end contending with batch mahomes and Shawn Watson coming up as well. Now that is some straight talk. Obviously coming from Damien Woody right there. Espn radio presented by progressive. Home Insurance. Get you quote. Progressive Dot Com. Today I want to reiterate something Damian said when you talk about that because you have to look at the fact that this isn't just about right now. This is about the length of the contract and as has been echoed many times on this show Edwards said that the other day anyone that thinks that this is the lack of belief by the cowboys in deck. Let's accept the fact that they publicly made an offer that has been reported to make him the highest paid in the league. I mean he's going to be one of the highest big quarterbacks in the League so there is no lack of belief in back. This comes down to how much money they can get and when they can get it if you want the ability to go back to the market as many times as possible to get yourself paid and with the new TV DEAL. Twenty twenty two. If you're Dak you want the ability to love yourself again if you're back and you know that you're on a spectacular football team this year that should very just by virtue of having a new coach inside that building. They believe that they have the ability to win the Super Bowl. So you WanNa tell me back and go in this roster and the next couple of years and then want the opportunity to renegotiate after Mahomes and Watson have gotten paid. I mean this all makes a lot of sense. It is possible and it's actually not. I'm not even GONNA say possible. It's probable when you put the the legos together to build the castle near it is probable that the cowboys believe in deck and the Dak believes in himself and those two beliefs. Make it very difficult to get the deal done when the cowboys WanNa do something as long as possible because the longer you signed somebody today the easier. That contract becomes overtime. Look no further for me personally as you know. I'm a raiders. Fan Remember the uproar. When Derek Carr signed a contract there was going to pay him twenty five million dollars a year because Oh my God. That is so much money. Now we look at quarterbacks that are making twenty five million dollars a year and say oh. You've got him on a manageable deal. Why because the best quarterback in the League isn't the one that's paid the highest the best quarterback that happens to come up for contract renegotiation. This off season will be the one that's paid the highest. We spend all of this time arguing about whether a quarterback during earned the money. And I'll say it again. You've earned the money if somebody's willing to pay it to you. You've earned the money if you hit the open market and it happens to be that time than any other business if you're a contract if you're a construction worker and you work somewhere where you know there. There just isn't a lot of construction being done. You might not have any jobs there. It doesn't mean you're not great at your job and then you work somewhere else where there's a ton of opportunity in somebody wants to pay you. You don't have to be great at your job. It's no different. There's a real life scenario here where you can be back Prescott. You can be very good and that's all it takes. You can be very good and that's all it takes to get you paid and it's also possible. The DAK wants to be very good and getting himself paid as many times as while the cowboys in fact WanNa lock him up for as long as possible. All of these things can make sense. And guess what the best part is. We're nowhere near the deadline. So there's no reason for action. Don't forget navy..

"The poll plays at lebatardshow. Does Tom. Hanks need to purchase the bullied. Corona kid a laptop instead of a crappy typewriter. Because that's something that Roy was saying during the break. You're not helping a kid. All Tom Hanks's doing there is getting a whole lot of public credit for being wonderful and giving a gift that is not in any way useful to old corona even though he like the old typewriter is unique in being named Corona and it makes him special. Typewriters also pretty useless a right. I mean typewriters and not even pretty useless right at this point isn't a typewriter simply useless. Yeah which is why I think tanks got rid of it like it's just one less typewriter. He has to deal a while treating corona like goodwill. Okay just needs to get rid of it. So he shifted where where for maximum publicity on this on positive publicity. Can I ship this crappy corona typewriter? Let me send it to that bullied kid and see if Hollywood variety all right about so tom. Hanks collect typewriters. And a lot of these typewriters hard to find. They're not making typewriters anymore. Actually have a lot of value. Depending on the model this could be worse several hundred dollars or at least the price of a Mac book Bro. So I've got here is Jeff Darlington last night and this had the scare the hell out of Chris Cody. I'm curious how he experienced all of this because he was already. You saw stu gods as a Dolphin Fan. He's a dolphin fan and it was a real hopeful draft and the only way they could have screwed it up to not get to for their fan base. The fan base absolutely wanted to but there were a lot of bogus things being said lies. You know they're going to trade up for an offensive lineman they really like Herbert Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah and then right before the draft. Jeff Darlington tweet. The following based on my latest conversation my mind is officially blown on potential of what might happen with the dolphins and I no longer trust anyone and I don't like anyone and I just want this to be done because now I feel like Russell Crowe and a beautiful mind and I don't know what the real. So Jeff Darlington shook. Chris Cody at his core because Chris was already scared like all of this just lent way to the are they not going to do the most obvious thing. They're really gonNA screw this up by doing the wrong thing. So how much fear did you have Chris like you didn't you? Were what kind of state by the time this draft pick was made..

This new rules package is going to be different so we'll have to get arms around that <hes> but i've always loved breaks now racetrack chris butcher try not to think about the physical aspect of it and and you know toll it takes on just go there and enjoy the race and a triangular fascism always on the go go back darlington's big weekend throwback directly in <hes>. It's always exciting to see everybody come in and show off what they got up their sleeves as and a and try and get into the stripe but winning the s. p. Five hundred is kurt. Busch darlington is that snapshot and it is today when you show up brought back to the nostalgic feel of how cool things were with the way that our sport was growing so fast but yene and how old school things were on how it was just a challenge to make the car last for the full distance down there and there might be one guy on the lead lap and second-place was twelve laps down because they had to figure out how to rewelded track bar back together arlington has that field. It's really neat to go there there. That's all people all the time that if you're looking for a race that compares to fenway or the wrigley field and baseball or an old stadium for college football or the n._f._l. You go to darlington to get your taste of the old south and experience what the what the track looks like and how the racing is there as well while others aren't as in love with the old school track your come outside. I mean i think the older guys kind of see that i don't wanna more of a highlight and more historic deal you know before i was even in a part of the sport. I didn't even watch it so <hes> not knocking at all. It's a special place meaning race southern five five hundred bucks for me to sit here and be like that says huge event for myself personally no not really. It's just another race for me but any race is good for me to go out win so keep trying out front. Garlic is not good to me. I don't know what we do wrong there. I'll just fix it right there. I'll take over from here. Darlington is is everything at darlington. I've always run well. They're upfront and everything's going fine. It's one of those tracks. Turn guys <hes> because i expect somewhere during the bojangles five hundred to have bobby hill and tim richmond racing side by side <hes> down the back straightaway but yeah it is it is just a there there's layer whereafter layer of story involved with all of these paint schemes and it is it's a it's a it's a rotating around the racetrack history lesson and just so much fun to see everyone get into it everyone to talk about the legends of the sport. "It'll help you troubleshoot the likely because get in the zone autozone now back to mike bagley. Welcome back to that scar live. One of the highlights about throwback weekend at darlington are the paint schemes. Team's drivers pull out this year. The nascar era being celebrated is the early nineteen ninety s and here's what a few drivers have planned flag is in the air and on the break daniel hamburg to the bottom of the racetrack. Yes it's based off of caterpillars first tractor to really paint scheme. It's the exact same colors that tractor was they exacting wetering of caterpillar where they use across the grill of that thing so really cool. I just saw the first guy cast of it earlier really neat so pumped to get there and be dallas. We'll pick up the checkered flag. I'm excited about the one we're running you know having adam petty his throwback scheme <hes> and seen what victor junctions really meant into him and had all his vision and coming to life and it would be a part of that for three four years now is really special so excited about that skill the chevrolet camaro zero one <hes> just a you know it's such a fun weekend not only for the drivers but crew members all everybody part of the rates team <hes> the fans you know they get all into the outfits that they wear and everything so. It's a fun alex. Bowman gets a lead about of karlic tim richmond throwback. It's like the folders twenty-five far so what's a pretty good. That's gonna be special obviously to be h._m._s. Car and tim obviously had a good time. I think one last time it was average. Man darlington season hopefully will recreate some of that joining us now to discuss more the paint schemes will see just how much fun the team's gonna have with a throwback theme is our st poster supposed to live always great to chat mike especially out of big weekend like bojangles one of my favorite weekends of the year when we go down there for throwbacks nothing like the southern five five hundred race weekend. It's been on the schedule for a while. No one went out west for a while. It came back to atlanta. It's back in darlington and now you have that just the placement of the race but then throwback weekend and we've been doing this for years but it seems like every year the teams get more and more creative with the paint schemes and the uniforms and it's always fun to go back to darlington got a lot of paint schemes that were going to be taking trips down memory lane here when they hit the track this weekend yeah there really are this has evolved into you know this this theme weekend that we that we see you know we saw <hes>. We see a lot of that in sports where we're there's throwbacks and there's different other. Themes at darlington has really taken to the degree that you have wondered here like four or five years into into this if we would ever lose steam with it we don't seem to because of all of the paint schemes and the creativity that the that the drivers and the teams have put together with doing it whether it's something personal olek. Some of the drivers have gone or whether it's a it's it's a nod to one of our champions or even a knob to maybe more obscure driver. It's always fun that friday morning walking through the garage jerry it's just fun because everyone is just gawking at the cars and looking at them. It just doesn't get any better than <hes> than than this weekend on darlington. What are some of the schemes that you have seen so far that stick out to you. I i'm a little bit more into the obscure. As far as uh we all talk a lot about you know the pearsons. The rusty wallace's in the del jet and they're honored with cars. I love what kyle busch's team. There's as the snickers car but it's a tip of the capitol bob dylan bobby helen junior former racer he he's not going to be enshrined in charlotte but those former racers like that are so much a part of the sports. I like what the the gibbs. This team is doing with that. I always love that <hes> that j._t..

You know it was a really tough process to think about all the things not only the things it would affect in my life but in others we have partners that are invested in me personally in front row motorsports manufacturer that spends a lot of time and money ah investing and and me as a racecar driver and and <hes> and as a race team you know all my fans <hes> my my friends and certainly it's. It's the only thing that i've known since i was a teenager. That's the only thing i've thought about <hes> even when i should have been thinking about school and different things when i was a teenager i was thinking about you know my race car and what i can do so in that process was tough but once it was clear to me in my heart and my gut you know after you know some quiet time and prayer and and and <hes> things like that it was a pretty easy decision once i got to that point the process was tough and it was <hes> hard to think about all of those things and change is difficult sometimes but once i got to the point where i was at ease and content and i knew that that was where god wanted me to go. It was a pretty the easy decision. How about some career highlights from david ragan about david ragan. I mean i certainly made a lot of dumb mistakes as a as a kid as a you know twenty only one twenty two year old guy in the sport. I felt like i missed out on some race wins at different places but he that's just part of growing and learning and he you know i i did the best i could with what knowledge i had then. I just wasn't a smart back. Then as i feel like i am today or experienced but you know i have so many great memories <hes> from just getting that phone call off from jack rouch that <hes> that i'm gonna get to drive a truck series part time with mark martin to you know moving up into the cup series to making that i start at the daytona five hundred appeared to you know your first poll to your first win. Those are all <hes> great memories but probably the biggest is just the <hes> the relationships that i've built inside the garage. I mean i've got some great friends that i'll always continue to be friends with my wife will be friends and our kids will be friends with their kids through <hes> throughout the last twelve twelve years of of hanging out flying with each other <hes> racing with each other being teammates with one another and so that those are relationships that will carry on <hes> a lot the lot longer than than any driving career will and firm david regan. What has it been like to be a nascar driver over the years probably different than a banker i yeah i think being a a race car driver like i was explaining the g._m. Maybe even less which <hes> to you and me probably insane not not so much for kyle larson. That's kind of what he does. It all tracks very true. What be funny about the minnow pond. Thing is if back when this was actually happening. They went to the guy and said hey. You're minnow pond will be in the way of our race track would be in the guy. We'll find out so it to you. This fine ticket and they're like no no no. We don't want to buy it from you. We wanna make a racetrack track was really hard for drivers to drive on so you just act like you wouldn't sell this minnow pond land to us and what is the way we want it. That could be <hes> that'd be. That's the real story i would. You should research that you seem to do that. A lot of drivers are going to be asking tires. It's a less abrasive than it used to be but still still getting more abrasive each year that goes by correct and we're going to get back to those old days where it's just spitting out tires left and right that's right. There isn't ingredient in the diet coffee. He'd been taking uh-huh some prepackaged. Did you just say balls down. It boils down to de bowl. I think you said balls down here in another throwback spear with sterling marlin stuff so bogus more like larry mac all right anyway so it all boils down to <hes> the fact that there is a ingredient inside the diet coffee drink that was prepackaged aged is on the nascar. Don't take lists as far substances concern so yeah. He was popped on a drug test. I'm a rabid coffee drinker. I have never heard of diet. Hi it's coffee. It's some kind of thing. I mean why they start early. I don't think he realized until the show started there in the playoffs. No i did i did. I just didn't know all the intricacies of it so all right in one tyler ancram on the outside looking in johnny solder this is weird on the outside looking in and then you got the fancy blue line there so the top six <hes> grant finger austin hill matt craft and stewart friesen ross chastain and brett moffitt leads by twenty two. I don't think he's a bad bet <hes> as we go towards las vegas. That would be a really crazy thing to see taylor angry rookie kind of upset. The playoff standings there. I've heard the name i really haven't seen it in print or anything and seeing his stats and that's pretty impressive. I guess he's pretty good especially for a rookie and he wasn't doesn't set for full-time season early in the season. He wasn't running all the races because he wasn't eighteen yet. I should <hes> request them for favors. Yeah that would be interesting so china about yourself. Nothing about you. Enlighten me. That's awesome so <hes> all right. There's your top ten or eight or whatever it is we did when does he. You start their playoffs. Isn't that soon yeah. It's within the next couple of weeks. It's not the same as cup. Is it now. I think there's a week earlier. Don't they usually but these these days who knows what the schedule seriously who knows. Why would we even look that up now. We wouldn't that that'd be silly. That would just be absolutely insane. The i mean i expect you to know everything so when you don't then i feel better really okay well. I can answer this for you right. After the vegas race the vegas race is the cut it off for the extended series before they go to their first round which is around twelve. Hey up next. We're going to go down <hes>. I don't know what we're doing but something with paint schemes james and throwing back up. I'm not sure <hes> next on w. Wait it's not throwing up. I hope like us at facebook. Facebook dot com slash the final lap. This is the final land weekly <music> cfl w is on my name kerry murphy his name toby christie and we are doing the paint scheme shuffle throwback darlington weekend. I am so excited so one eight different colors. I actually have to pay attention to see where my favorite drivers are. Wow like that. You're gonna pay attention. Well probably not but you know you only have one favorite drivers drivers. It doesn't really matter that's true once. I lock into those colors. I'm good to go right. So are we going right into this without news of the week. Or what do we know. This is segment to dude. Oh this is where you know a a an area that were unfamiliar with because usually there's an interview right here. Oh you're right. I understand now this does this is weird. This is a weird feeling that's right. It's like retreading water without a life vest and it's bizarre would so we're gonna we're gonna kick things off with a double zero of landon castle.

"Better cooler heads prevail and when things are going smoothly into play on it's it's just easier to compete and to win and i feel like everyone on our team. Is we have better plans on monday when we're are looking ahead to the race and we stick to them all week and <hes> like i said a lot of it comes from just having really get speeding trucks makes it a hell of a lot easier so you know it's. It's just everyone working together and performing when we need to you know. I guess maybe we all are doing better under pressure. I don't know but it just is what it is and <hes> <hes> pay windows open for the season right. Now you're preseason. You can test you can experiment. Everyone races a little bit differently but when it's go time in the playoffs it's go time and <hes> winds are all matter like just proved earlier. When you win a race you you wanna talk about it yeah definitely and so you know when we were heading into the playoffs yeah of all the talk was ross chastain. This ross chastain that he's going to run away with the championship. All of a sudden is brett moffitt but when out his chest now the playoffs started and and <hes> i think you're hard pressed to find anybody who stronger than the twenty four truck all of a sudden. That's pretty weird. Now that <hes> switches around i mean you season ebbs and flows and all that other stuff so you never know definitely excellent f._m. There's still a long way to go from here to totally alex tagliani he continues to try these road courses and nascar and keeps coming up short it is but man he's always so close isn't donnie he is and he's such a personality and fun to watch and what a heck of a driver but that's got to be frustrating analyst tony stark with the cool facial hair so he kind of does yeah it. Kinda does <hes> so ben rhodes was <hes>. I guess you'd call at third. Sheldon creed and austin hill rounds out the top five for for the truck series in <hes> canada yep and of course we're in the first round of the playoffs currently brett moffitt now leads the points by sixteen markers over our chastain as this series series heads to carry murphy. What is this las vegas motor speedway on september thirteenth. Is that now right right that. I'm just saying that because you'll be there oh yes yes. I can't wait. It's going to be hot. I can guarantee forget or no. I thought i made a mistake because you know that's that's normal. Wow very self deprecating carry murphy this week. Thanks very high on himself. <hes> which usually he is <hes> taken a different approach. Apparently we're going to see how well this plays with our our listeners. They probably won't like it. The pompous carry murphy our fee has turned into a humble one well but i switch gears at anytime we know trust me we now and then it's all over yes for sure <hes> let's take a look at the <hes> xfinity series points we kind of touched on the the leader there but <hes> let's run down ten to one. Let's go all the way back to tenth which in that series last place at this point <hes> hat john hunter nemechek what's wrong whereas whereas this hour reading this room at nascar dot com okay so you don't have it in the notes here no no no okay then you've got justin haley at number nine michael and that noah gregson gregson don't know then nobody refuses to tell me <hes> chase austin syndrich at number five then he got justin just an auger somehow i mean that guy has had just the worst season ever and he's still forth pretty impressive. <hes> cole custer number three christopher bell to and tyler radic like we mentioned forty five points ahead in the lead there yeah you mentioned the all garre thing it is funny because it has been a total season of frustration for no wins <hes> even though he had five wins ends a season ago and you're looking at you like man. He is just had an abysmal season. He was in the sand trap again this week at road america. Yeah what's wrong with him. But there is fourth fourth in points. I think a lot of guys in the expenditures garage with love this bad season that augurs having as their possible best season ever so <hes> <hes> to put it in.

"App. Are you ready to talk nascar from what i understand dan from talking to you and other folks <hes> we do this talking back and forth and somehow it goes global. I don't know what specifically referencing but yes. That's the the truth. I wasn't aware of that. I thought it was just you and i haven't a conversation and we hung up the phone and that was it some weeks. It feels that way now a little bit nervous okay well. That's it's good. I mean you might actually think about what you're saying this time so it's good so all of this time that was the problem i think yeah just totally one with your jimmy fandom random right just running off the mouth not thinking there's any consequences or anybody listening or anything like that yeah so what happened. Did you get like putting your place this week but something he said no. No i just realized is that it leaves this room. Okay you know it only took five hundred eighty three episodes to to come to this realization. Was there some like event that happened the major realize this or no. I just think i'm colossally stupid generally okay. Hey <hes> been looking forward to this weekend. All year long darlington throwback weekend that's where they go to home depot and and they they loaded their shopping carts with all kinds of different paint and they just chuck it at the cars right <hes> not quite oh okay well. It kind of seems that way. We're going to break down on all of the throwback paint schemes or at least the ones. We like <hes> if there's any we don't like we probably won't even mentioned him. We'll do that coming up okay. There's there's a few in particular like no. It's not jimmy's you don't like. Jimmy's no i do but i mean it's not the only one okay by the way how did he get it to look faded. How did he get into look faded. It looks like his his paint job is faded like in the sun. I think it's that they changed the blue for ally purple okay. It just looks a little washed out to me. Maybe it was the picture possibly possibly all right. I don't think you're quite on board for today. Show at all. I don't know man. I'm still on the edge about this. I'm not sure how to feel about you. Actually thinking before you you speak yeah. That is a weird thing for me. I'm sure but <hes> i'm sure at some point. I'll forget and i'll let loose that's true. That's a good point. I like that so we'll we'll get onboard that the cup series had the weekend off saw some vacation photos and stuff like that they probably you know needed some time off. They've been <hes> you know doing the grind for quite a while now and they're gonna have quite a grind after this off week. So <hes> you know can't blame him for taking some some much needed vacation time definitely definitely but a couple of other series were inaction and they had a lot of work because it was not only road course action but a couple of the longest tracks on the schedule yeah definitely a special for the expanding series wrote america's like four mile just crazy amazing insane track.
