"Back to the show. This is a super cool fact that i learned when i was reading. We'll see we'll see was. When when darius rucker i went solo with your first single in two thousand eight it made it to the top twenty on the billboard charts making you the first african american singer to reach the top of the country chart in like twenty years. Just charley pride. I didn't even think about that going into a and when when it hit the top twenty five somebody came and said that to me. That was named three or four like trini. Triggs these other guys. That were black country singers in the eighties and nineties. I thought might have had a hit or cowboy today and it was crazy to me that twenty five years between me and charlie pride hits a country radio that you see yourself as as sort of a trailblazer. Was that ever a notion that you had or no. You just wanted to make music and that was when people told you though you're like oh you were shocked. Houdini wasn't. I wanna play rock world. Because i want to play rock and roll with those guys. You know what. I wanted to sing country. I was gonna make the my record in my basement studio buddies. He'll drink beer. And make a country record in my mess. By doc lee at the time and doesn't didn't see things that way and got me a record deal but you made the transition from rock and roll to country. Yeah that desire to play cut. Was that always in you like as you were on you. Guys were the biggest band in the world. But where you're like. I'm really not doing what i totally want to do. Because you were at the top top. Yeah i used to ask the guys to play country music like our last. Let's just go to national. May country record neighbor like man. We're rock band and so they wouldn't do it. I was the who's growing up in the nineteen eighty-nine guy named rodney foster. Came out with a record called del. Rio texas nineteen fifty nine and it changed my life. I heard that record thought. Someday i wanna sound just like that guy got to a country record and i'd say it all the time and they laugh at me and finally i got a chance to and the draw for country music for you is live mostly in the in the sound of it in in sort of the the unique instrumentation of it or is it the in this sort of the the lyrics the stories that are that are talked about what grabs you most most storytelling. I love. i love how country you tell the story but you know when you get to sing with a with a real good slide guitar playing with you man or fiddle playing with you man. I chills thinking about a lot of the hybrid. Sound of of a band like wilco to consult guy. Yeah yeah. I love them wilco. In the silos back in the day and you know Son vote they'll son vote was huge for me. I i i record. Wow i was talking about son. Volt in about uncle tupelo with both those absolutely. Yes oh good for me for me. Do you ever venture off and like what would be the most surprising thing. You could tell me that you listen to that. It'd be like what very manual berry manilow. He's he's not guilty pleasure he's awesome. He's awesome. Who's your guilty pleasure. Then i don't know mean everybody i love. I love like neil diamond. Barry manilow and you know Dean martin record the other day and you know dean is just i mean. I love that i love. I love everything man. I love everything. How much you missing. Touring right now. Do you miss being out there and playing for people. I'll bet you do. Yeah you know when you take a week off for two weeks off for three weeks off. You always had that show on the calendar where you knew replay it. you'll always go to play in phoenix. I wanna play whatever and not knowing as shown me that. I love to play music so much and i miss it so much man. Are you coming up with songs. You probably never would've or melodies you probably never would've because you're sitting there just staring at the walls for weeks and weeks gear. I've written dogs in this. This next record. I can't wait for people to hear this next record. It and so crazy stuff. Do you remember the very first song you you wrote And seeing some it guinness. A buddy of mine and i he had written most of it and i think i wrote a few lines for but he wrote it but i just remember the chorus was destiny. Destiny it's destiny. That was a whole course sir. No it wasn't good. It was it all it sticks with you though. And i read that you use to like kenny rogers right love. I toured with kenny rogers. We have to fit this story in every podcast. We go ahead is this. But there's there's a christmas themed tony l. I played an in kenny rogers christmas too early in nineteen ninety four or ninety five maybe ninety nine to five and we got we smoked pot every single show and then we had to like set up the scenery for the christmas section. A of the show. Yeah how'd you get around a tour bus. come on. We just took a slam. But i remember being on the to like i understood the concept of enjoying when people say enjoy being on the road. I didn't really enjoy sleeping on the bus. With fifteen other guys who were the best and the most awesome guys but just like the bathrooms in the farting and the singing until three in the morning. And i was like guys. I tried it showed tomorrow. Isn't that everybody. What's the squeaky l. That i want the cops on your own bandmates. I loved the people in it. I just didn't like the traveling purchase. Because there's no home base you there is. I just didn't enjoy kenny on a jet or was he s. Always the gem go with kenny e. Yeah it'd be the joint form giving you ride kinney's like i don't know extra seats that for my bag that's my shoes hair. Roller great guy. Great great a big fan and and and his country music hall of fame induction. They asked me to sing a lucille and it. Was you know standing right there in front of kenny rogers and lucille was. That's so that was unbelievable. Serious walk walk me through so you guys start hooting the blowfish. What year was that that you guys form six. We started january. Six january eighty six la for show up in charleston now in columbia south carolina at at at the university of south cox. Go i'll say sure in five you'll say.

"Jason. Are you sleepy today. No i'm just haven't an agent. What i've realized i'm fifty one years old. I think i'm moody. I think i've realized it's taken you guys who've known me for a while little late to this realization. It must going to your junk box because you. you're the last to get the memo. Yeah i'm a real squeaky wheel for no reason. We know there's absolutely no reason for me to to be in a bad mood today. Sometimes he's a real grubber. What is I say this with all respect to those who seriously suffer from. What is the definition of bipolar disorder. Now if i can self diagnose. I think it's your highs are real high and you're real low and and you become manic. Can you self diagnosed. You have to ask friends that you're close to it. You just asked me. Yeah what's so. What's your opinion qualify for that. Let's say you watch you take a sip of that okay. So that's just plain water right or is that you have it. You have it you. I think everybody's been feeling level and again to not diminish people have this clinically but depression. I think that there have been level. I think that levels of an and people have been experiencing. I certainly i started going on prozac right before. This podcast pandemic. Oh room for lunch right before lunch today. Way before the pandemic did you sense There was a disturbance in the force. And you know. I did not. I just like a pill up because something wicked this way comes. No no i i We'll we'll talk about that later. But yeah no i should have been taking it twenty years ago but it's i started my happy pill twenty years ago. I'm a big advocate of. So i i it. It's beneficial that. I'm taking it now that we've in. I'm surprised that it took you this long to because i find your life depressing so you're talking to me or is he talking to you sean. I'm talking to both both okay. Okay so guys. As i introduced this guy you guys are gonna know who. He is right off the bat. So this fella who a huge fan of he grew up in the south charleston north carolina. And and it's an unbelievably incredible singer-songwriter. He formed his now famous band back in eighty six in about a decade later. Won a couple of graham sold over twenty five million records the name of the band. This is how you're going to get. It is houdini. Blowfish and the name of the superstar is darius rucker. What rocker is set up before you. Hello hi dairy solo. And he's holding a mic like a rockstar. Should absolutely. I am absolutely perfect. I couldn't plaque by a mike stand in my bag old. Now is that a What do you call a euphemism No because i've heard will say that before and it never do what he was talking about that. Oh wow dairy your your name actually sound southern it sounds like matthew mcconaughey would have a blast with your name. I like what he says. Hey hey dare is so relaxed all the time. He is so relies. When i was younger you know which is not recent time remembering because it was so long ago. Check your note. I'm dead serious. I would be in my car listening to your songs. I bought all your cds. And i would try so hard to sound like you when i sang. Because your voice is one of the best coolest voices i've ever heard and it's so like so identifiable and did you always seem like that like when did you open your mouth. Unrealized a pretty cool voice. I'll tell you say that everybody does or will be will you. Everybody does exactly exactly. I like to daria. Singing career began just one day. You were driving and out of the own band to start a band actually day. It's all i wanted to do. Since i was four thousand four year old i discovered al green and Me i thought he was genius. Yeah so did you. Sign him right there. Yeah williams listen to discover. It was great for me and ever since i was a kid this is oliver wanted to do. I mean we surprise. I was talking to a friend last night about it. And it's just shocking that you know fifty four years old. I'm still getting to do at this level. It's pretty crazy. Yeah darius so With the advantage of of hindsight now and all this sort of a crew data over the last twenty thirty years. It's been that long since i tuned. Sort of Change the music industry and what it is today as far as brick and mortar stores going away. What is the section of people in the industry that benefited from that versus those that are at a disadvantage now or is it good for everyone across the industry now that they've had a chance to kind of find some Equality with some of the some of the parts of it it's good for the consumer. It's great for humor because music so easy to get now. When we were younger we had to stand in line at the record store on tuesday throughout the new record on phone or get whoever that's been great The people started those businesses. It's been great. And even the record companies you know. It's been great but the laws haven't caught up for the artist yet like the the the of spotify walks away with billions of dollars and we're making point zero zero zero one cent. Every time they play my soul right to tell me Do you feel like some of the magic has gone because there isn't that anticipation of waiting like you were saying waiting to. I remember the first record that i went and bought on my own. I was eleven is nineteen eighty-one and i took the subway downtown. Toronto to donna. Summer album donna donna. Summer macarthur park no no to buy to buy. Acdc dirty deeds thunder cheap. Jack was the first record. I bought instantly regretted it but is is some of the magic on in that process. Oh yeah i think that feeling of wings record and getting in an open it up and read the liner notes and you know look at the pictures of what if that's gone and and the thing even for artists like orders now like i still make records i still. I still make albums that. I want people to listen to the kit people out there making singles. Now they don't write doesn't matter that whole process doesn't matter. Is it true that you have to kind of play. This game of releasing the music knowing you're not going to get a kind of monetary reward from it because the way to make a living now is just touring and touring. Only this is the perfect. Pre digital is a when we were doing our thing. The only reason we went on tour the only reason we went out and based shows was to make people buy records. That's the only reason you went on tour. Was i mean you were making money torn but you'll make money seller record. You is out there trying to get people to go buy records and now today the only reason you make a record is so you can tour of you right then. Amazing i mean. It's the exact. So basically a hundred percent of the ninety percent of the income from the band is ticket sales and concessions and souvenirs easier then has your percentage of the gate and the souvenirs and stuff like that has that gone up or is it You know it's going up just because you know my my standing in the music business is going up you know. The basic things are still the same as they were. So that's negotiation point as far as percentage of ticket sales and concessions and stuff like that. It wasn't something that was put on the table as a negotiation point as sort of a make good sense record. Sales went away for artists. The venues and whatnot didn't say okay so now you can have some of the gate. It's just it's always been the same and the more juice you have in the industry. The bigger percentage. You get exactly lebanese. Today looked up money right. They don't feel bad for you. In robinson square garden is like so many records. So let me give you eighty percent of the gate.

"I think there's a reason why we judge that song harshly and it's and it's never going to hear the whole song. Well, maybe, but we also don't want that kind of mellow, dramatic sap bringing us back from break. It makes us feel like we need to be leaning into some sort of Ah, mo P headline, But with the voice wanna be in your ears, a great voice. I wanna like that. I want to hear something super upbeat. I wanna hear a dance song. Whole real really interesting. He's got a great I think he's got a great voice. Yeah, but it Zoe context in which we hear the song you ever You ever hear a song that you're kind of fine with, But then you hear it at a club or you hear it in a workout class like where it's thumping, and you're like Me likey now? Yeah. In the flippy flop, you consort of negatively critiquing song Because of where you here? Yeah, right. Well, then Katy Perry performed with Darius Rucker. I have not heard this song before, but I think it's an interesting matchup. There were a lot of Matt. There were a lot of, you know pairings with artists on stage together or remote. On onstage together. Yeah, I know very far apart. Yes, And then And then the person singing wasn't wearing a mask and then the people in the band. Were all masked up. Okay? You know what? I'm song. Okay. So here is, Let's listen to this song. What is it called Only love with Darius Rucker, Katy Perry. Yes, I want day lived on Give us stop. It's like what do we do Order? Sounds great. I think it sounds pretty. I think their voices some pretty together. She's not over doing it when she's on stage with other.

So loved areas, he'll be honest a few minutes. Now let's go over to amy with the morning corny. Morning Courtney. How to cows? Their shopping, how do cows like to do their shopping from cattle dogs? Morning Gordon Tomorrow night on Saturday night. On our facebook page, you can watch the grand. Ole, opry it's a show that we do now and I hosted I help produce it. There's nobody in the seats in the Grand Ole opry and we bring up artist every week and I'm GONNA play John Party in a second but he's won the acts this week and so it's John Party, which is Great Pam Tillis which is super cool and it's also runaway. June and it's the first time to play together with Natalie stovall who's a new member and so Was Driving yesterday I get a call from Naomi for runway June and I'm friends with that group pretty pretty close to them. Now he was banned forever. So don't pretty well, she calls because you can ask favor. And I thought it would be hey, would you mind promote in the opera or something like that which had no problem doing but it wasn't she goes hey, we're going to do as one of our songs. The devil went down to Georgia. We come up and and Charlie Daniels part. And I was like. Oh and I. Struggled with it. What do you think said? Yes. Why? Because they're your friends and your close to Natalie and you're already going to be there because you're hosting the OPRY. So but what about I mean? That's that's tough song. But you've done it like. A lot with the raging idiot. So I think that because you're you feel comfortable with them. You're doing it. What do you think I said? One, hundred percent you said absolutely me and Natalie have done it. One hundred times we're doing it. Okay. I said No. Because I don't want to be about me. If I get up there. And I've played the two thousand times or so it's not about me getting up and doing something on that stage But I always go comedy or music comedy, and if I get up there, it's just going to be a novelty and I don't. Their shine being taken away and at I I said, yes, I was like, yeah, I'll do it on the back of my hand and then I called back and say I can't because. I. Don't want the stories to be bygones ruins runaway June's. Song. And by the way I would have ruined it because I'm pretty good at it but I would ruin that experience like they're awesome. "Song there from Darius Rucker welcome back to the all financial our here was Steve all this weekend I'm Jennifer Perry and Darius was actually a guest here on the show awhile back and talks about the importance of family to him the boarding as being home with me and you know take the kids to school and pick him up and going to basketball games and that's the important stuff you know the job takes me away from that but usually when it is taken away from the weekend or somewhere I could take the family with me you know you know sometimes I got to fly away and be gone for a week but I always remember what's important and what's important for me is being with my family all the other stuff allows me to be in my family allows me to live a great life but you know work doesn't come first so many more like it used to he's one of the rare celebrity Steve who actually told us I do plan to retire most of these guys wanna keep rocking and touring and everything else dear he said no I do want to hang it up eventually so I can spend more time at home with the family I thought that was refreshing well it's it's very me because he is true they and they go up way too quick yeah they said it was probably the best advice I got when I was young you know a member of a Country Club and everybody was older so their kids were about my age get married and almost all of them said the exact same thing I wish I would spend more time with my kids yeah and I said I don't want to do that that's not one of things I want to be saying when my you know when my kids are getting married yeah I wish I spent more time with them and so we spent a lot of time with the kids and I the memories are fantastic the memories are fantastic and I see the people you know the moms in the dads when the kids are acting up a little bit the stores into and stuff like that a look at him I said enjoying weather little rain because they're going to grow up very quickly yeah don't worry about these times like this and I think that's why you have such a close relationship to with your kids today but the great thing about retirement is for those who maybe felt like they missed out during their working years on some of those moments you do get to spend more time with your family is one of the great things about retirement but it's also too when we start thinking more seriously maybe about the kind of legacy that we want to leave them as well so can you talk a little bit here Steve about the importance of planning that legacy for them as opposed to just hoping it all works out okay for your family why I like to look at the legacy here there are state planning issues a lot of people say well I don't need to do that as much anymore because the estate tax is so high now you know it's currently it's eleven point four million dollar exemption as a married couple it's twenty two point eight most people say I'm not in that category and that's when I look at it as it is state planning is really not just about estate taxes and having those are are important most people have in again I'm not a lawyer but I know lawyers and if you need to get one give me a call I'll give you the name of some lawyers that can can assist you with you that but most wills and trusts that I see or what I call I love you wills and trusts they're basically to the fact that I love my wife if I predeceased her everything goes to my wife and if she doesn't I love my children get split evenly between them almost most of the wills and trusts that I see are in that category so a lot of uses for why do I really need that and I say to me the most important documents that you need is to have your powers of attorney for both financial and medical decisions and update a living will so that if you are incapacitated what kind of life saving methods do you want the war to change a lot on this because of the fact that's where the problems start it's not expensive to do but then you have it we had Jack in Lori they came in they were both fine Jack was working we asked them do you have your powers of attorney yes they do everything's will's trust yes they had the documents in place or they told us they did and then Jack went down hill very quickly and within six months he was in a nursing home and when they went to get the power of attorney they had a power of attorney for real estate decisions they couldn't make any decisions you could get any money out of his IRA accounts the family started to argue so they went to conservatorship so they were taken over in an outside person from the county was the person that was over the estate on how Jack get his money almost two years later they finally now have a professional guardian slash conservative for them and it's just tough to do when a simple legal document could have made it very easy when either one of them became incapacitated that's the thing that I like to look at who's going to make medical decisions for you if you can who's going to make the financial decisions for you if you can't that's what people really need and those are powers of attorney the wheels in the trust I believe are important but knowing what to do if you can't make a decision is very very important please don't put your family through that it can cost a lot of problems yeah save them some heartache and some headaches too and often times this is the conversation that we tend to put off but at the all financial group they make this part of the full blown retirement analysis for a reason because they want to think about some of these things in a lot of you want to do the right things for your family to maybe haven't taken care some of those details if you'd like to start on.

I even told her during our interview, I do political pop culture show talk show. And I use this song quite often because I'm not right? I'm not left. I'm right in the middle. And she said she's glad they were using it. I'll play back my conversation with her on the show tomorrow. We'll play some of her music as well. Here is a text that says. Says checkout country music singer Frank foster, he's from north Louisiana. Okay. I will. I will check that out. Here's a text. Hello. Darius rucker? Darius Rucker was Darius Rucker. Really? Well, he was the lead singer of who do you the blowfish, and he's an example of somebody that went to country and became very very successful. But he wasn't a crossover artist as much as he became a country artist. And so there's been a difference with people like Steven Tyler and Cindy Lauper in Bret Michaels who had been crossover artists, they haven't abandoned their genre of of rock pop music. So they haven't become country performers as Darius Rucker did. So I think that would be somewhat of a distinction there here is a text country. Plus rap equals crap. L O L. Yeah. Well, we just mentioned that that was that was one of the terms that has come up to describe country music. I like country music, I have to admit. That you know, growing up. I guess I was one of the ones like many of you. They grew up with diff- a choice. We had a choice between pop music and country, western and country. Western was not that big in this area. When I was growing up. But over time country music has become very very popular. In fact, I really should start doing more country songs as bumper music for the show. And it's not that I avoid country music is just that my my no my reference is is pop rock stuff. It's not that. I I'm against hip hop rap. It's just that. No some of that. I can't even play on the air. But I just my reference is pop rock. And plus, you know, the way we do bumper music on this show. Much of the music has lyrics the deal with what we're actually talking about. Here is a text that says dire straits money for nothing gay slur was used because it was replicating a conversation between two blue collar type furniture movers. If you want to hear a truly irreverent politically incorrect song listen to blank up the rope by ween. I can't even read what it's not really blank up the rope. Appreciate that. I'll check that out have to check that out. So, you know. Yeah. Sometimes sometimes things are said and sometimes words are used to emphasize something. But..
