We're waiting for more details on what may have led up to that gunfire. Meanwhile, Seattle police chief Adrian Diaz taking another hard look at crime in the city as he reflects on the 2022 year end crime report. During a virtual meeting with the city council's public safety and human services committee, Diaz spoke about the 22 page report that the department released last week. That report showed that violent crime is at a 15 year high in Seattle. We have actually saw over the last three years of really sharp increase in the amount of shootings that are cities experienced and the amount of victims that are associated with many of these shootings and shots fired. Come a force Eric Johnson reporting Seattle police patrol officers now get three days off for every four they work four tens. As SPD struggles with an ongoing staffing crisis, northwest news radio's corwin Hague with more. The newly announced policy changes start with demanding patrol officers work a daily ten hour shift up from 9 hours. The change intends to ensure shifts overlap so the beats are fully staffed during shift changes. To make up for the longer work day, officers will begin working a four days on three days off schedule. Police chief Adrian Diaz acknowledges his staff is stretched thinner than ever. Make it a critical that we invest in resources to keep our officers healthy and safe. The students at enum claw middle school may have prevented a school shooting Thursday when they brought concerns to school administrators. The police department says a student threatened to carry out a shooting at the school on Halloween after investigating police determined the threat was credible and took one student into custody. A gunfight broke out early this morning at the Zipp's pot shop in Tacoma as it was robbed, police say a security guard at that store returned fire and likely hit one of the suspects after a group of people rammed the store with a vehicle and pulled their weapons Sinclair how much merchandise was taken but the suspects left two stolen vehicles behind as they fled no arrests made. We will introduce a constitutional amendment to enshrine in our basic foundational document, the right of a woman's choice in the state of Washington. Women deserve this. Another bill would prevent states from prosecuting women who receive abortion services in Washington and representative Tara Simmons is sponsoring the keep our care act a bill that would protect healthcare services following a hospital merger. Senator patty Murray's lead over Republican challenger Tiffany smiley has been reduced less than half of what it was. In July, the incumbent Democrat had a lead of roughly 20 points, but in the latest cross cut Elway poll, that is down to just 7. However, 50% of respondents say they'll still vote for Murray. It means that smiley would have to not only get all of the undecided votes, but take away votes for Murray in these last 6 weeks of the campaign, which is a heavy lift. Pollster Stewart Elway says the democratic advantage after the Supreme Court overturned roe V wade, seems to have diminished as voters are returning to their previous partisan ways. Jeff pojo and northwest news radio. Well, two top Amazon officials have to testify in an investigation over its prime program that's according to a ruling by the Federal Trade Commission. The decision came after Amazon leveled harassment allegations against the agency when it came to executive chairman Jeff Bezos and CEO Andy jassy, Amazon tried to fight back against attempts to get the men to answer questions, saying no legitimate reason was given. Baggage handlers and rampages at sea tac airport say some of their employers don't provide them with health insurance, and they want it to be a requirement. Northwest news radios, Ryan Harris has more. These workers for some of the vendors and businesses at sea tax say they want those employers to provide them with health insurance that's both affordable and provides good coverage. The service employees international union says many of these workers come from communities of color or from another country, and a union survey found 60% of them don't have employer based health insurance. They don't work for the port of Seattle, but they're asking port officials to require businesses that operate at the airport to provide health insurance. A port statement says it agrees all airport workers should earn a living wage and have healthcare and that it's urging employers and unions to continue discussing solutions that bring excellent service for their shared customers. Ryan Harris northwest news radio. And big news for air travelers is northwest news radio's John lobert ini reports a decision on the location of a second major airport is now just months away. The puget sound is expected to see 27 million more air travelers than it can handle by 2050 and close to a 1 million 5 in cargo. That's double the current demand. Two open spaces appears county are getting a lot of buzz. One south of south creek, the other south of Graham, air travelers are one thing, but there's a real appetite for more room to move cargo. More than a dozen sights, including 6 airports are being eyeballed as the site of a major airport project with as many as three runways by 2040, a 15 member commission is expected to whittle down the possibilities next month with a final decision expected by next June. "The January 6th committee featured one witness who offered some shocking accounts of then president Donald Trump's behavior as he sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. President reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. Mister engel grabbed his arm, he said, sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel. We're going back to the west wing. We're not going to the capitol. Cassidy Hutchinson was an aide to then White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, ABC Steve Roberts and Aaron couture ski were monitoring the hearing. Steve first, the president knew the crowd was armed and said he would go to the capitol with them. That in and of itself, the committee of vice chair Liz Cheney said is astounding. Well, it is astounding. The notion and what this builds is this picture that we've been hearing over and over again from this committee now for weeks. Trying to demonstrate the president's intent, trying to demonstrate that he was very knowledgeable about the intent of the crowd, and he was very knowledgeable about the challenge for perhaps even a violent challenge to what was going on in the capitol on January 6th, which was the counting of the ballots. And this has two implications here, and the one is legal. Hovering out there is the possibility. It's still a small one, I think, Aaron, but it's still hovering out there, the possibility of bringing criminal charges or civil charges against the president, but they would have to be able to prove that he knowingly was subverting the process of the government. But there's this larger political question. Apart from the legal question. It's a separate question, Aaron. And the other testimony about his lack of control about throwing dishes against the wall about upsetting cable costs about grabbing for the steering wheel of the president's vehicle to get them to the capitol. These are moments that speak not just to the issues of January 6th. They speak to the mentality of the president. They speak to the self control of the president. They speak to the president's qualifications to hold this office so there are enormous political implications down the line here, Aaron, apart from the legal ones. Steve alluded to it Rick and I wanted to ask you about some of the, I mean, let's face it mind boggling details about the president's behavior that day as related by Cassidy Hutchinson, Rick, she said that there was a conversation about Trump going into the House chamber on January 6th after his rally at the ellipse, got into the presidential limousine nicknamed the beast, thought he was going up to the capitol and when he was told no, Hutchinson said he became irate and said, I'm the effing president, take me up to the capitol now and even lunged at the head of his Secret Service detail. The mental limits of this conjures Aaron, I don't think you could get away with in a bad novel about Washington. I don't think it would have a place in 24 or in any work of fiction. From ABC News, Wall Street now stocks fell on continued worries about the economy the Dow plunged 491 points the NASDAQ closed down 343 and the S&P gave up 79. A lot of Americans are feeling pretty uneasy about the economy. The conference board's latest consumer confidence index slip to 98.7 in June from 103.2 in May falling for the second month in a row. The drop to the lowest level since February of 2021 is due mainly to persistent inflation, which is driving up prices for gas and food and in response to the Federal Reserve's plan to slow inflation by raising interest rates. She points to COVID-19 wildfires and indoor pollutants as the cause behind increased respiratory illness. In Washington state nearly 600,000 adults and 120,000 youngsters live with asthma. Research has showed people who have asthma and other lung disease improve at higher altitudes. It worked for our state's most famous mountaineers and asthma sufferers Lou and Jim Whitaker. And Lou and his twin brother had asthma as little kids and they're in their 80s now.
