Should Women and Men Handle Money Differently?
"So first of all. Let's talk about how you get money in the first place and that is earn it right and according to the pew research center Women earned eighty five percent of what men earned in two thousand eighteen That pay gap is shrinking Particularly for younger workers which is a positive trend but that is still a meaningful hurdle to overcome. The pay. Gap is partly due to to work history. You know like having kids great you know. But as we mentioned with the fidelity study earlier taking time off to have quetta's like it often leads to job offers in worse income prospects not to mention the years of not generating any income which often reflects years of not investing in a workplace retirement account in particular. If there's a match there right and those are some big disadvantages to overcome yell like you said at the beginning matt that stat also reflects some structural issues when it comes to male and female pay. But here's another thing to matt When we're talking about pay women are actually often averse to asking for more money than their male counterparts. There was a survey from ron saad. Last year the found that sixty percent of women have never negotiated with employer. Overpay women are also more likely to stay at a lower wage job to according to The personal finance web site the balance. And that's not good right because even just a small bump in pay with a new employer or in a job that been in for years can have just a massive impact on your ability to earn more throughout the years and then also save more for retirement. So i think of all of the things in this episode where we see. Maybe you know women as sex falling short. It is in in the ability to ask for more at knowing what they're worth again. This is another instance where you might be listening and you're thinking i've never had a problem negotiating a race like i've never had a problem asking for more money so again. It's important to keep in mind that though the research shows us like we know any totally doesn't apply to everyone. I'm specifically thinking of two conversations with Kirstin and julian saunders. The couple behind rich and regular that was episode. Eighty six and julianne was just bragging. About how great pearson is at negotiating. Evidently she's just like the queen negotiating more. Pay if you had to listen to that upset go back and listen to that one. Is that regardless of your gender. Earning more it's just so important right and all of us could stand to our abilities on that front And we've had lots of different conversations on the show that specifically cover you know not just stories of individuals negotiating but just how to go about doing that. I'm of Ramiz sadie that was Backing up said one ten and he outlined a great process a great method You know when it comes to wanting to up your salary. You know what steps you need to take. In order to negotiate a solid race gam thinking to matt had far new darabi on the show. She is just awesome personal finance expert and at the same time. She is someone who has made a killing as a small business owner. She knows her worth. she knows. how to negotiate. Yes so like you said there are many women out. there are crushing it. Who don't have a problem and asking for what they're worth. Who don't have a problem asking for a raise. It's just when you read those statistics. There are obviously a number of women who do though. And i wanna see. That number changed for the benefit of women as a whole absolutely. Let's about spending to do women spend more. That's an interesting question. My wife personally met hates to shop. I really. She just defies the stereotypes. And actually i don't know i don't mind shopping. A little bit roles are a little bit reverse exactly but there was a study by the wharton school of business that found that women are more likely to view shopping as a recreational activity. My mom definitely fits that bill Most men wanna leave the store with their purchases quickly as possible but even though women enjoy shopping more it turns out men still spend more than women in a typical year so while men might not enjoy the process of shopping as much. They still shopping. Just from a utilitarian standpoint sure yeah also that increase spending with the stats as well. There's there's a survey from wallet hub earlier this year. They showed that men are more likely to max out a credit card. Women are apparently seven percent less likely than men to have maxed out credit card at least once in so while women they might enjoy the shopping experience. More than men do a lot of different stats. Show that women are more cost conscious. They're more likely to shop at alice. Stores more likely to to wait till something they want is actually on sale The store brands more than men. And so you know when it comes to spending this this is definitely a win in this category for sure And so i i of see this as a call to min to stop spending so much money on neighboring items fan. Yeah i feel like. I'm totally guilty of this. I totally fall into the study. I don't like to go looking for the best deal. I do because i'm spending less but like i'll look at maybe two or three different sites and then i just purchase right whereas for you like i feel you are so good at hunting and making sure you're keeping your eyes on the best deals out there making sure that you're spending the the least amount of money possible. I feel that's something that we all need to make sure that we're doing right. And so you know regardless of who you are. We should all work to just become a little more conscious and how it is that we spend our money. I gotta say mets. I don't care whether you're man or woman but store brands should be high on your list because they're going to save you a ton of money it's just like in savings when you go for the storebrand over the name brand equivalent unless it's your craft beer equivalent And you're wanting to spend a little bit more on the because it makes you feel nice. Can't name brand everything though. I think i think sometimes that's a tendency here. Maybe that men have The men just gravitate towards the name brand no matter what it is without thinking about it and that's where we need to shake things up right and we we need to consider storebrand's more frequently also too. I think we've talked about this. The quality of store brand items has gone up a whole lot in recent years. Her kirkland signature brag. There's other ones too man. Like target has some great Store brands that are better than their name brand equivalent. Sometimes so yeah. It's not just costco yeah costco rockstar Let's see let's talk about saving as well. There's more good news here. It turns out that the the savings rate for women is actually higher than their male counterparts. They save a higher percentage of their pay. They spend less of what they bring in and much of. That is due to the more frugal. Tendencies that we just highlighted when we talked about spending differences but even the women are saving a higher percentage of their income on average. They've actually got less than thirty percent of what men have in savings accounts according to data from the federal reserve from a few years ago That is likely due to the fact that overall they're still making less like we discussed earlier which means a smaller amounts of money saved overall. Yeah one of the reasons. Women have a higher savings rate as well Is that according to a survey by. Us bank women of all ages value financial security more than men do. But here's the thing than that. Focus on financial. Security can often backfire. If you keep more of your overall assets and savings and cds instead of invested in the stock market right like savings for saving for long-term goals is really important but so is investing For the really long

How later on their, you know, Eric's the dorms like that. No like how in the air force. They have like air conditioning. It's like being in the military. Like move for you answered. There's a story of in Lackland. So the barracks at the dog handlers marines using Lackland was at the time. I had been in the Marine Corps for like nine months when I finally got to dog handling school after bootcamp MC t- than in school. I went to dog school next when I walked in the barracks was like holy shit. This is so nice, man. Like there was carpet. They had been ding machines that actually worked they had vacuums that actually work. You didn't have to buff the decks or anything because it was just vacuum. And I found out while I was at school that we got it for low Rhett. The Magor only had to pay the Air Force One hundred dollars a month for rent for the entire barracks. Because the air force had condemned it as too low quality of life for their from bridge for chief. Guess what? It's never been renovated Murray's are still in it now, and that was fifteen years ago that I went through school there fifteen years ago. Marine still use that same exact barracks. Still considered luxury for the all the is. But this I've had a similar. So this person saying they're annoyed because their friend got put on there somebody in their Unigate put on called. But they see this person on calling Allentown. I had a guy who in my unit who like I'm having a tough time with money right now, can you lend me some money in also can I use your car this week us young? He was he was married. And I'm like why is he down in like San Diego right now with my car like what he just like took my car, and my money like had a good old time that week, but like blatantly right in front of me like zero fucks giving then in the end of the week. I was like, hey, can I talk to you real quick about this? And he was like, geez. "Kevin the interesting thing for me about Scott dragon. Is that connections stated after he won at Huntington that they were going straight for the Lingfield Darby. And yet they stay over hurdles, and they come here. So that indicates to me that they feel as though this is a horse who could be Cheltenham player. Did they know what would have faced them into the winter Darabi as well? Which talk about a little bit later. Scott dragon like I was reading pressed for the last year overheard was his first Rhone very finished behind global citizen under a very educational right was impressive. I thought he go very wet at Aintree. It didn't happen the ground against them. And look he's being blasted the way there on the all weather and doing very well to fair to run these races one hundred and four have made a little bit higher than that. So we know he's got he's got a good engine Bush. I like twenty did it Huntington. You know, he's a horse thefts. The better the race. He's in the better. He'll be because you're watching. They're just like he was on his debut. Just really free have very very strong, and he was buried by Wayne Hutchinson. Now, really buried to try and get in the central and his jump in his quite good. And he just kind of jumped his way into the race. And all of a sudden he's in front before the second is. The quality of the race and out him to to kind of saunter away from their interest where there's more air D pace and better horses in it to carry him into the race for longer. I think we'll definitely see him to bed. Her. A look like Rick C says zipping around Kempton over two miles and good ground is going to be what he wants. So as long as coach could get him absolutely anchored there and get some bit of some bids get some bit settles. I think he'd be a fairly toll for even though for angels brass who I don't want to knock I dunno. We've probably be not gonna massage for the last two months or eighty. But in the main that that's being sorry for me. It's been a price based criticism. He's been a short. It was a short price for the supreme based on one run of of questionable solidity. But look Henderson's clearly think an awful lot of what he did ask us was was good in the main steady Ron race wouldn't radio them and didn't. Trump many hardens what he did Johm pews grand. He will he will have to raise because he ain't gonna mess about global Susan. Yeah. That's a good thing. And that's a good. I hope I hope you're right. I hope you're right. I hope he does make I don't say, but maybe GM winning. Yeah. I see him running an absolute career-best, and I will back him to be second. French said top of the game. I'm not quite sure if Kempton is a struck are certainly tree my the rain Kempton. Maybe it's this trip. I do think he could potentially win a gold copes on there. I think he's that good because I think three mile to Iran's Cheltenham will be his Cup of tea one horse. I'm really interested in not very often. Like, I extremely enthusiastic, I know. But it's not very often watch. And Mickey Mouse race, I get blown away. I have to say I was absolutely blown away by Rouge vis of Harry Whittington when he won a maiden herder us soda of all places was a week. They I was only flicking through the channels. It's probably watched a couple of episodes of friends, maybe watch the chase a couple of times. And then this race on the chase. This friend friends but finished about twenty years ago. So good it's timeless killing. I watched the race was a horse of Evan Williams into called bowl plan that I know they think is a useful. No force and this Rouge VIP dolphin in front, and like it was a little bit like watching saying Calva Dawson is Ronin style. But I think he could end up actually being better than saying the horse. He absolutely annihilated one at Ludlow earlier this week call Oakley and he's denture on in the first race ask him to. Maybe I'm not quite sure. Hey, go. The race is going to be did they leave your way to run this and could be John of price book Rouge vis a horse very very interested in Kempton them on since Stevenson. Okay. Race as well. Just that. I it could be very good odds. If did they leave your to Tanzi grand Santi, the big boys like there's really good horse in there like is in Bruno star. And that's what I wanted to know what I would say is that like, this is harsh Tinkham. And there's been weirdly, boss. I know they like Thomas diary who really well, boss. You get the feeling from what I've heard the Bruno put star is a fair, but veteran Thomas Darabi and all he would say Thomas, diabetes, probably a one forty horse anyway, and this brutal the storm he go back to his bumper debut. He beats poor rushed Hayes knowing links the poorest had ended up winning the Aintree bumper. Now, he went off favors listed bumper. New breed. He was four to ACM non and he came out a haunting one nothing Ray. It's very easy. Both I get the feeling he could be very good and only Murphy's only in the game for a little over a year and a half research. But he's he's an unbe. Believable trainer and OT this horse might take him to them. I think he could be potentially supreme are even about more harsh Bush hippie, very keen. So he runs he runs a Kempton. Okay. And finally what on the race in post novitiate Leopardstown kills. Yeah. Mango becomes actually when she'd pause. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Jump really well. But didn't anything fools though? That was there was second to go pretty much further when favor for another chase next time unapproved is he can jump a fence. He wasn't that much better than the other one is nine months ago. And it was it was second favorite. I art by Louis perver-, Senator Dole world's pretty before. Bush for. No, I found mainly. All winter. Hey, America off definitely could win w. Yeah. "Chelsea topple city to nothing. And then your question was are you surprised? And it's like, I'm not surprised, but I think that the sort of bloom came off the rose a little of that game. Because what everybody was talking what rose the city rose. Just just Chelsea's win Chelsea Chelsea cracking a city's unbeaten streak because obviously what we want to talking about afterwards was the kinds of abuse the room sterling is subjected to the way in which he's covered in the English media instead of talking about like a really excellent cagey counter attacking game play by Chelsea. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, the game itself was very entertaining. But the field level cameras anytime that Starling would trail off into the corner. You know, like lured avid lease over there. The go one on one you would just see all of the fans like nearest the ground just sneering and snarling and saying devil's advocate here, though, wouldn't have been different if it were David Silva, or whomever. Yeah. And you could play devil's advocate would've been different. If it's an airfield like, I think that. There is a reputation that Chelsea fans in certain aspects have of being a little bit punchy on that on that particular topic. I mean there was. We're raising we're racist. And that's the way we like it you wanna brush whole families with one, you know, one color there. But like, I think that there there's a little bit of a reputational down. And then it opened up a much larger conversation about the way in which the English media treated, sterling, right? And of course, brame sterling posted on Instagram. So there was a big fury over what this Chelsea fan or Chelsea fans allegedly shouted to redeem sterling in the following day. He posted on Instagram not about that particular incident. Not even about himself. He did a side by side of two Daily Mail stories one about his team to teammates tocine Darabi. I'll be oh sorry. I don't pronounce it didn't pronounce his name. Right. He hasn't played for city and one of fill in the stories were about similar things. Each of those players young players bought their mother's homes, but the headlines were completely different one kind of suggesting that it was a reckless purchase the other one just more straightforward that one. Of course, referring to fill phone in the white player and Stirling road along capture. About how it's not necessarily even the fans to blame for this. But the media for kind of fostering, these attitudes and consciously or unconsciously the public absorbs these types of peel vs. And I thought that actually led to some really nuance and interesting discussions in the British media. It's interesting to me because you know, like in America, we would be aghast or couldn't even fathom really someone throwing bananas kinetic player like an NFL game or an NBA game. And yet that happens in England throughout Europe. But what I found interesting is listening to English podcasts and reading English media. They've had it really has sparked an interesting discussion a nuanced discussion about their coverage treatment of black athletes, more nuanced and more kind of introspective than I think we talk about when we talk about race in America as it relates to athletes. There's a really good piece in the guardian written by Daniel Taylor where he recounts some of his past as a just a kinda like shoestring reporter working in the Midland's in the nineties and just working on kinds of stories that he would he talks about like one time. He was working on a story about a missing kid like a carbon stolen with a baby in the backseat of a little baby girl, and they went to this press conference that was supposed to be the mother making a public plea like you have new formation about the location of this baby. And when they show up the mother is of Indian descent and a bunch of the reporters start stirring, because they know that automatically the front page of the papers. The editors of the papers are going to kind of turn a blind eye to the story because it's not gonna connect with white readers. That's not going to appeal to white readers and jail. Taylor was like I feel like I have some insight into the way these things work, and he points out a couple of examples over the course of the last few years of not only just like the crazy abuse that rhyme sterling has to suffer. Grounds across England or in Europe..

"The social network gab has been taken off line by its web host. And this is because of a shooting that went down over the weekend, which I'm sure most people listening probably already heard about I didn't hear about it until Sunday. 'cause I was so deep in this this bitcoin conference didn't even know what was going on. You know, how it is? When you're at these conferences put whether it's pork fast, or whatever you just kind of get disconnected from the the outside world, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. So we can go straight into your phone calls, though, I up it's Ron in New York to start things out. Ron you're listening via tune in. Go ahead. Can you hear me? Yeah. We got you. Go ahead. Okay. Well, I talked about the midterms week away. Obviously I live in in upstate New York. And I gotta say very sharp is being a a lot of momentum here because I you know, I go to college, and I was shocked to Albany people on the campus new sharp was real, and I've talked to people outside like there's a guy who's on on the campus. And there was a guy walking around with a wary Scharfstein ending out the paper, the people and their their been funny people outside of college was he hired by the campaign to be there. Or was he just like a random college guy who happens to the ram college guy? Yeah. I talked to him, and I talked to some other people that you know, who are outside of the college who know nothing about politics. Larry is the libertarian candidates. Have there been any polls recently regarding Larry Sharpe because I heard they finally put the candidate here who's the libertarian in New Hampshire on a pole and it was like one percent, but they hadn't even asked a question about her previously. So it was the first time ever and right now actually here in New Hampshire. Darabi Perry and Jackie are out at a protest where there are. At least a dozen protesters outside in the in the cold nighttime of the cold in New Hampshire outside at the W debate. Because they will not allow the have not set fair debate rules and also even though there's a libertarian qualified for the ballot along with the democrat and the Republican they're requiring that all candidates have twenty five thousand dollars in the Bank before race or whatever before they will allow them into the debate. And that's not all they're also requiring that they get twelve percent in Opole in of course, they have certain requirements on what those polls are supposed to be done. But yes, that's what's going on here. Ron. Well, there's a full here in New York. This shows very sharp is by thirteen percent in in one of the ball. And I think part of what's happening is a lot of libertarians hardcore conservatives are moving ward where he shar because I talked to a lot of people that are typically not libertarian are typically conservative and they're voting for Larry star because the Republican we have here is the force. What's known as the state back, which essentially put more restrictions on the New York, and it was like some of the toughest gun laws in the country, and the Republican somehow does not support repealing it almost. And and a lot of what moves moves Republicans here in the upstate New York just of repealing the safe act because very sharp supports repealing and the Republican doesn't a lot of Republicans. And even a lot of Trump supporters are moving sports, Larry Sharpe. Yeah. So it looks like there was only one poll that actually included Larry Sharpe. At least this. According to Wikipedia, the one you cited appears to have been funded by Larry Sharpe. So that's that's interesting. The other polling companies completely apparently leaving him out, it appears is that true. Yeah. Yeah. Well, the Anna college bowl, we not. Him out. But I I gotta I talked to people, and I'm I'm I'm shocked at how many people know.

"Forty four listening in Beijing, twenty to forty four here in London. Let's have a look at the Asian front pages to help us through it with joined by my Kapila lecture in comparative politics at so Essien festive London. By the stadium I get to see, what would you like to start? The Jakarta Post is reporting on the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Lumbang. 'cause you may remember there were a series of earthquakes a couple of weeks ago, they're actually still ongoing as we speak. And so the article here Tokes about how basically there's a lack of heavy equipment that slows things down. And so far only about ten percent of two buildings have been cleaned up. And as the articles of mentions about seven hundred thousand people are actually homeless or internally displaced. And so it just shows again, the lack of stay capacity in Indonesia to actually do with these kind of natural disasters. Days at she on Monaco twenty four. The idea that Japan having to do with with floods with terrible, terrible storms. And now we have Indonesia with with an earthquake, these natural disasters, how do I say this? These countries are no strangers to natural disasters like this. Why de we end up with a repeat every time we have something like enough quite where people say we prepared for this. Japan is actually quite prepared for in many ways. And and so therefore death toll is usually quite low by Indonesia as your correctly point out, it's on the ring, oh, fire as Japan. And so we CD's earthquakes every couple of days. There's literally a hundred or two hundred earthquakes year in Indonesia, and it just always comes down to the same kind of makes of or toxic kind of combination of government corruption, incompetent elites. And also just a lack of transparency and accountability in building codes and building regulations. I, I was actually in loan book hearing the earthquake parts of my hotel actually collapsed. And so I had to sleep outside for two nights on basically it was on a main access road to one of the larger settlements in Lombo cut. What struck me was that there was just nothing happening for defers today's into onto third day. You so. A couple of government cars and military convoys go into these disaster areas and so gave into facts that this happens every couple of weeks in Indonesia. It's really disgraceful. How Indonesian government is actually am dealing with this issue, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's actually comes up into presidential election campaigning, two dozen in nineteen. Nothing was happening. No one arrived. So what people able indeed unable to do often the quake. I mean it was. It was stunning. We were basically, I, I stayed with villagers for for two nights, and basically most of them relied on American government reports that came out online and basically right outs to information from Darabi. There was absolutely no information given to anyone on the ground there where it soon army warnings, shoot, and then David revoke that people ran up and down hills. Because if these soon NAMI warnings and it was just quite astonishing how the Indonesian government than. Also refused to actually declared these area as a natural disaster sewn because he may actually hurt tourism. So a complete lack of coordination and also probably a willingness to really address these deficient. So my guess is already clear Tokes about town out. These houses are being rebuilt and every house Hoke it's about seven hundred US dollars to do. So. They also say that the households are expected to build an earthquake, Kristen basis, forties houses under the guidance and supervision of the publish worsen housing ministry, which is, of course, one of the most corrupt government ministers in Indonesia, which explains the death toll is usually so high in countries such as Indonesia. In many ways. These are manmade disasters because the government really doesn't enforce some of these Lowe's and regulations. And so quite unfortunately, I think this will just repeat itself in a couple of years probably in loan book, let's move on to the indicating Asian review. And the headline says, as the west. Isolates men, some investors digging for the long term. Yes. So interesting stories coming out of me mar into UN has now declared activities off to Burmese government against hinge a channel side..

"Are you shaking your head i shoreham that's william darabi who goes by sandy and he's the director of the samuel d boys cook center on social equity at duke university he studied this with the federal reserve bank of boston racial wealth gap is a persistent problem in his barely changed over time not just in boston but across the entire united states where for every dollar a white family has a black family holds just five to ten cents black households where the head has a college degree at the median have less wealth than white households where the head has never finished high school i spoke with sandy charity about the racial wealth gap and how decisions and policies made over two hundred years ago continued to affect us today we just released a report called what we get wrong about closing the racial wealth gap and the motivation for that report was to address the perception that the reason why black people have so little wealth must be attributable to certain kinds of behavioral deficiencies bad judgment ignorance about finances and the like and we released this report to demonstrate that that perception is absolutely wrong the fundamental reason we have these huge disparities is because previous generations of african americans have not had the capacity to bestow the same levels of resources on their children and grandchildren that previous generations of white americans have been able to do and we have to actually go back and look at the whole historical process of how black americans have been deprived or denied the opportunity to accumulate any significant amount of wealth over the course of almost two centuries and i would argue that the starting point is really the failure of the federal government to provide the promise forty acres and a mule to the formerly enslaved black folks in the aftermath of the civil war and that's a critical point i wonder if we could touch on some of the other major historical markers in addition to the federal government's failure to actually make good on the promise of forty acres and a mule what happened after that in subsequent decades that really led to this gap so there are a number forks in the road in black wealth accumulation where the society took the wrong fork so the first is the failure to provide forty acres and a meal.
