I'm really excited about the run game possibilities, And to me, that's what Kyle Shanahan has always done best. His dominate opposing defense is through scheming up favorable run matchups, favorable defensive alignments through what he could do on offense, and now he has more athletes to help out this sporting matters. Most her will be the guy in the game for cow Shannon. He's the one with the breakaway speed, but where he moster has dealt with injuries. At times. He's probably not as effective when you give him the ball more than 15 times per game. The 40 Niners have seen that over the last few seasons, and they saw how effective he could be in the 2019 2020 post season when he was fresh. And well rested. He dominated against the Minnesota Vikings have the historic performance against the Green Bay Packers. And that's why the 40 Niners felt that it was necessary to go out and get Trey sermon to aid this backfield. He's someone who could have more of a day, one impact than Trey. Lance. Tomlinson started in that left guard former first round pick who they traded a few years ago from the Detroit Lions to get him and he's been great. Ever since Arriving in San Francisco, they went out and got Aaron Banks and El Sereno Native Bay Area Guy grew up 40 Niners fan out of Notre Dame. So Michael Glenn, She's got some familiarity with him. And I think that banks is someone £325 to isn't necessarily the proto typical offensive line. "That you feel like you'd like to see get get their name called by the 40. Niners today. Well, I mean, I'll start I corner wise. I think they still need more corners. And I love Carrie Vincent from l s U is a 5 10 corner. Really, really feisty Ellis. You defensive backs always seemed like they make it in the NFL. He He's a real athlete. Keith Taylor, whose Teammate Molden are already got drafted. Taylor's a big 64 long arm kind of Kela Witherspoon body type, but he's really cocky, and he dominated at the senior Bowl practices and even in the game. I really like him. So to me, the secondary Richard account and Tyree Gillespie or two safeties account from Georgia Gillespie from Missouri. Um are that are really interesting to me. On Then there's a couple edge rushers today. I mean, Theron Jackson from Coastal Carolina is a really good, high motored pass rusher and a coastal Carolina coastal Carolina. Yeah, and then this one really get you. This is one of the sleeper of sleeper names, but Chris Garrett is a player from played at Concordia. Well, it's an unbelievable, unbelievable player. I mean, you really have to see this guy to believe it, but incredibly productive. You sacks galore. I mean, he's got ridiculous stats at the Concordia level. Ever. Concordia is, but I did see film of him and he is He's lightning off the edge. So you said you saw film guy Did she film actually have filmed nice, eh? In other words, He thinks he's somebody who really could pop out of the fourth round room. Mom J. Stevenson running back out of Oklahoma, and we know the Patriots solve that reputation that it's just like, Hey, you be the running back boom. And he'll score three touchdowns on week one or something like that. So so what do you think of him? Because he's going to be in theory, potentially behind Mac Jones here over the next year, too. I love him. I think he's a terrific player. I mean, you know the weight is what's his weight. You know, there was a lot of talk that he dropped some weight. If he did, he's gonna be even quicker. So he's like a big back who almost like built like a fullback, But he's clearly a half back. And you know if he can get his weight under control and not have, you know, baby fat you're talking about somebody. Who maybe maybe a real steel. Yeah, man. He's a big back for sure between the tackles runner. Stevenson was grated Oklahoma Well, my question is, I guess it's to you, Larry. What I mean, don't you think the 40 Niners really need a solid third receiver? I'm talking like that. That flanker that little wire Lee that quick, quick separation type of guy. Is there someone like that in the draft? You know, it's a great receiver draft. For sure. I mean, it's It's a terrific receiver draft. Um, the guy from the University of Houston Marquez Stevenson is a difference maker. I mean, this guy can absolutely we'll talk about 43 speed and just, you know, stretch the defense would be an incredible slot player. It depends. What they're looking for. Is that you know they still have Jalen Hurd here. And I expect her to show up in camp ready to play. Now, Doug Hendrickson we're gonna have on the show later is his agent will get a little report card on heard at some point, but he's the bigger physical 65 to £20.220 pounds slot, but they could you know, the other guy that I think is interesting. There's a couple guys Thailand, Wallace from Oklahoma State. Probably should've gone day one. He's still there. She Smith, who was a buddy of dead of of the Niners wide receiver from South Carolina. Who depot Samuel their buddies. She Smith is an undersized slot receiver that you're talking about Dennis, who's like Definitely can make plays and really, really impressive player on tomorrow. And Terry's another one from Florida State. Who's just you know, has great measurables and and had some injury problems of Florida State. And then probably the most productive guy is a guy named Jalen Darden, who played in North Texas, and his numbers are unbelievable. As far as production. He's a smaller, diminutive guy. But man, he's his productions. That probably is good or better than any receiver in the entire draft. Right up to the top With Devante and Jim are chasing all those guys. He just did it in North Texas. Yeah, And then that's what I would like to see in these. These later rounds, the 40 Niners to go out and find that one. That little step that little receiver that quick receiver kind of what they're hoping for Dante Pettus to be kind of be a guy that gets him quick separation make some big plays after he catches the ball, that type of player, maybe someone that special teams like 40. Niners haven't had A good kick returner. Punt returner, you know, on the squad. I think that would help the team out quite well. It's possible that Amri Thomas could could help out on that front a little bit. You'll hear from Amri coming up in about a half hour, so I got the chance to sit down with him last night. Thank you for having me on. Yeah, so far so good. Nice. Nice. It is good to hear will get into the goings on of the Niners, things that are happening. Or more likely to happen here. They're not too distant future, But let's talk in the hypothetical, shall we? Let's just say that Shawn Watson truly wants out. And the Texans are listening. Do you think the Niners would get involved? And how involved do you think the Niners would get in this right now? Completely hypothetical scenario. Well, yeah, I mean, they get involved. Um, you know how Channing in and John Lynch left a little bit of wiggle room in there, Uh, discussions about Jimmy Garoppolo and how you know they see Jimmy Garoppolo being the quarterback for this team in 2021. Less. No, there's a way to improve the position and one of the ways to improve the position, and they're not very many would be to Shawn Watson show. I think in that regard, the 40 Niners would would very much, um, you know, show their interest and it's interesting because you know Watson has this no trade clause, so He's going to be able T Steer this ship. Um, to some extent, so you know, he probably want to go to the team with the shot, You know, you know the culture. In Houston has been his chief complaint. Um he feels, um, lied to And, um, no one is listening to him and all of this, And you know, this is the guy that saw his his top receiver. Get traded to the Cardinals last off season, etcetera, etcetera, So I mean, you would think that he would want something that the 40 Niners have, which is, you know a shot at at winning? Um, uh, an NFC title conference title Mean? Look at the For the last four teams in the NFC that they're the Rams a team that the 40 Niners beat twice of the Saints. The team that brought the quarterback Larry just said, is going to retire there. The Buccaneers. Ah, a team with a 43 year old quarterback. And then the Packer is a team that the 40 Niners trounced and last year that if the championship game so before you guys have a shot, they've got good culture. I would think that they would be one of the teams that the Shawn Watson would circle. As far as a ideal destination. You know? Okay, So let's just say that's not possible or that they don't have the right package Trade wise to get Watson Where does that leave them at the quarterback spot? Because it seems to me that man. I'm looking at this roster going. Okay? What do they really need to win the title? They got to get healthy. They may be needed quickly pay or some dominant edge rusher to go with. Oh, sir. Um, and then they need they need the quarterback to play you to play like a $25 million quarterback or get down the road so they can go find another quarterback. Um, that's how I see it. Where are they with Garoppolo. If Watson's not in the cards Is he meeting? They're coming back, or do you think he you think there's other guys in front of that They'd rather have instead of him. Well, I mean, Watson would be the no brainer. I mean, the other the other options would be. It would be a plus brainers. You'd have to think it over. Very carefully and decide whether you wanted. You know a Stafford or a Ryan. A guy in their mid thirties or, um, a Garoppolo moving forward. The number 12 pick sort of puts you, I think and a bit of Ah, no man's land. You're not going to get any of the top guys. Would Trey Lancer fall that far? He would be really interesting if he did, because you could keep him and sign Lance and you would have In air apparent you would have somebody Garoppolo does not leave this team. Um, t easily kind of take over there no late in the season mid season. I don't know what it would be, but He's a really a physical, um, great arm, everything you want. You just doesn't have a lot of seasoning at that point, so he would be interesting if he were there. But just not a lot of easy answers Beyond that. And then I think you're looking at, um pass rushers. Yeah, you mentioned one quickie pay from Michigan. Aziz Ojul, Ari. From From short, there might be another guy and then cornerback. I mean, David's Lombardi and I are doing the cornerback review today. It's gonna run tomorrow You start looking, you start looking in the future, you start looking at who Robert solemn might be able T shine. Over with the Jets in it that that's a position that looks pretty bleak, pretty empty, moving forward. So I'm wondering what do you I'm just curious Matt your thoughts on on Garoppolo because I was really high on him when he first got here, and then the injury came. And then then they got another injury this year, but it's just like after the first injury came back and just was like when he first came here now granted, I don't know if you put a lot of stock in the five games he played at the end of the season was in 2017, where Niners were going nowhere and he would just swing the ball around the field. But they had some really good offensive games is he is good as he was, then. Like you say, how do you? How do you view him? Because I thought he was gonna be really, really good. And it just hasn't hasn't panned out. Yeah, That was a bit of lightning in a bottle situation. Um, you know, that's what they they based a lot. You ask how much you based on those five games? $40 space quite a bit. I mean they signed into a long term deal. Just a month or so, couple months after that, So, um, and I don't think it was just the quarterback play was how the other players, um kind of revolved around him and in the locker room how they responded to him how he interacted with those guys. And I think all that remains really positive. Um You know this was this was an oddball season for a lot of reason. Remember that that first game, the only game where he wasn't injured all season, his starting receivers that they were Kendrick born and Dante Pettus? Show is we never really got the full Garoppolo. When we never got the full offense together. It seemed like one of those pieces where there was most Kittle or Samuel or I you Cor Garoppolo. Was out for for one of those games. I don't know if there was more than a couple of games where that group all played together this season. So, um, you know, saying, you know, kind of ripping up the season saying was all due to injuries is a bit of a cop out, but it really was the underlying factor for everybody this season. Show. I mean, I think that's what the 40 Niners and result is going to be now again. I think they're gonna look at Watson. Uh, as Larry points out, will they be able to put together the best package? Um, I think Watson will be able to guide it somewhat, but the end result is that the Texans have to trade him. And maybe it's the Texans that see the real value in Rapallo. That would be something that they could get in return that would sweeten a Watson to 40 Niners type of create. Talking Niners with Mette barrels of the athletic here on the Tolbert, Kruger and Brooks Show Continuity is always a good thing. But D'Amico, Ryan's and Mike McDaniels didn't get their coordinator jobs. Just so we could keep things normal or keep them steady. Those air two guys that have earned these do positions that they got. So you combine that with The fact that you keep in the continuity keeping the continuity there this year. Seems like too obvious yet home run promotions for these two guys. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I don't think I'll Shanahan would ever admit this. You need sodium Pentothal to to get it out of him. But I mean, if he had to choose between one of those two lieutenants to keep Like McDaniel or Michael Flor. I think he would have kept Mike McDaniel girl. It's those those Russian attacks. That's what McDaniel specialty was. He was the run game coordinator. He was the one that designed all of those. Those motion plays. Everything that used trick and Kittle does, kid when you checked. Both responded on Twitter today to this promotion. I don't think that they were just kind of scrolling, and they saw it and they decided tow chime in. I mean, both of those guys Really see the genius in Mike McDaniel. Um, you know, and you strike it especially has has talked him up over the years, so I would think that, uh, certainly not a done deal. But you know you check is is a big piece of this free agency puzzle that this was a good Move toward re signing use check in a couple of months..

Hanging man. Good holidays. Everything good? Everything is great. Everything is beautiful. I almost saw you yesterday You were at Levi's Ian Williams was there when I got down off the post game show. I came by and saw him but I didn't see you with your red Shap. Oh, Dante, I would've given you a big big hug. You're You're on my level yesterday. Almost raining. I haven't seen you in so long. I miss you. Yeah. Red Beret. It feels like we see each other all the time. Because because of TV and radio, But you know, I haven't really seen anybody through all this cove. It, uh, pandemic. It would have been great to see you say you were in the door in the room next door to us, you know, but and had to stay a little later because he had to do the podcast. We came in with a killer Witherspoon and the touchdown against Tyler Locket and I want to start there because, you know, even you've been critical of him when he didn't play against Miami, and there was a time there were. I thought they were going to cut him off the team the way they did Dante Pettus, but I think they're looking for a compensation pick and But here he is at the end of the year. Playing better and better and better, And he had some matchups yesterday with Jake Metcalfe. But Akello on that fourth down to Chae the locket. In a way played it. You know, outside leverage, allowed him to get across on the shell across there and go out to the left. So tell me what you think about that that play and ultimately what do you think the future of a color Witherspoon is in the in the NFL, Dante. Hold in his tenure with the 40 Niners. We've seen the high variance with this guy I was seeing. You know, At times, he looks like a all pro And at times, he looks below average. He has all the capabilities, and he's shown it over the past few weeks. Locking onto arguably some of the best wide receivers in the National Football League, matching up and performing well. I think that You know what? It's a lot of pressure early in the football season in you have expectations. You know you don't really have the wins and the losses yet. It's harder for guys to lock in and play the way that he's been playing over the past couple weeks. I read an article that said he started to take the mental side of the game over to the physical, and that's why he's performing well as the late With that last play. I don't necessarily put that on him. Yes, he could have played it a little better from a technique aspect as far as getting up pressing the guy being inside leverage, knowing that you have pressure coming knowing that you don't have any inside help. But then that's when the defensive coordinator and our defense the line as well, because any time you sacrifice extra guys to get to the quarterback, and they don't necessarily get home, you know that's on everybody, and it's hard to play man coverage. When you're stretching the field in a linear aspect, which means that he aligned to the left side of the field, and he's running away from your leverage all way to the right. The only thing you can hope for is for the pressure to get home because you're gonna lose lose situation, especially against a speed guy like Tyler Lockett. In regards to just see the entire season. How would you describe this thing? What happened in 2020? You know, I think that they got caught up and, you know, just circumstance, circumstance of coronavirus, not having Aussies and having to deal with major impact injury. Uncertainty with Colgate Weekend in week out. I thought that Tony issue before the Niners had this year was just all the uncertainty all the injuries and it caught up to them, but they had their full roster. They didn't have the impact injuries. I truly believe that the 40 Niners Will be in the playoffs and not only sneaking into the playoffs, but they were probably somewhere in those top four spots. Despite all the injuries, and your guy Nick Bosa being the most prominent, they still were top five defense and they had they had Seattle confused at the end of the game until they erupted. So there's so many question marks in the secondary. If you were to compose The perfect 40 Niner secondary. Where to outside corners a nickel back. You know, Jimmy Ward's gonna be it free. So who do you want it strong for your outside corners. Who your nickel backs as far as guys on the team, Or would you go out by one check Griffin of the Seattle Seahawks, by the way, is a free agent. Which would you buy one? Would you keep the Red K one? What would you do here, Dante? Well, what I would do if I was in charge of, you know, Matt putting together this secondary in 2021, 1st and foremost, I will go on son, Emanuel, mostly. Exclusive rights free agent. The top banner is adam gays and it says at last it's over that's not a very punchy headline but then it says the big story giants grab their fumble but eagles drop the ball okay talking about fumble and the giants game but i think the local in washington. Dc have the best one and it just says tanks for everything that's it says tanks or every team for everything. This team is really going to the playoffs. And how it got there. It doesn't matter says With leeds washington to ugly win unexpected. Nfc championship tanks. Everything just openly mocking them so did dallas lose. Yeah they did. And it's funny. Because during the broadcast of the last game sunday night football al michaels and chris collins were than they were talking about that if dallas had won the conspiracy theories and jerry jones paying people off all sorts of things that have come out and honestly. I was hoping that the cowboys would win at the cowboys in the playoffs. That'd be kinda funny just to see what they would do. Because there's always little more interest when it's team that's right. Arthroscopic started that term by the way but the giants lost three of their last four games. They lost three in a row and they finally beat the putrid cowboys by a measly four points and they lost ten games so people will say well. It's you know. Joe judge in his first year joe judge in his first year last ten games. So i don't wanna hear lou wolf bob garin about how he's doing a great job. He's not doing a great job if you lose ten games that's not great but here's something else the thing about what. The browns adding already ended one drought to go and get themselves in the playoffs again with the longest with any other team. The browns have to figure out how to end another drought and that is how to win at heinz field. Oh and seventeen since two thousand and three oh and seventeen the only thing that could possibly help. The browns is that since the start of the two thousand seventeen season home teams against the spread are one and eleven in the opening round. That's pretty crazy. And then just straight up their four eight. That's an especially ugly record when you consider that every single one of those home teams was favored to win. So if that streak continues that's big trouble for the six teams that will be hosting this weekend. Buffalo seattle washington tennessee the saints and the steelers now. Who would you rather have in those games. As i said we can get to rick's pics on friday. But i still would much rather be the home team. What are you kidding announced cell. I think these teams both go with those quarterbacks for for another year. The one thing i to say though is if you think about mike mccarthy his decision not to challenge a controversial catch by the giants he said it was too close and something. That's probably going to be haunting them. And you know donovan. Wilson intercepted a pass from daniel jones earlier and shot himself out of a cannon and sacked jones for a loss.
