All right, Ben, you got a piece up on coach Shanahan San Francisco. He and himself like it's just a fascinating thing. Because if you talk to hardcore football people that are totally into it, they're going to tell you he's the smartest guy in the entire league. And now when you look at his record, he's 32 and 40. They're not good again. And there's other people that are convinced he's terrible and he's completely overrated. And I thought you did a great job of dissecting this. So let's start with this. Your background is and how you put together kind of your thoughts on what you're seeing throughout a season. Yeah, so I came up. It's funny like doing draft stuff, right? And so to me, the hook for this is looking at the way that San Francisco has drafted and particularly the way they've developed. Because it's very easy for us to say, a front office and an NFL franchise drafts. And then a coaching staff plays. And there's no bridge there. You just gotta get good players in the building and then play them. And really there's a big missing third piece in that equation, which is between draft and play. You've got to develop guys. Nobody walks in a league and it's just good, right? Sometimes like guys take the league by storm, but there are always gaps. There's always rookie loves to take. And good teams, smart teams, young teams rebuilding teams, all these different categories, we'll put a rookie out there and let him make mistakes, so that later, he's good. You watch ravens dolphins on Thursday night. Rookie safety javon hall and his flying all over the field had the game of his life for the dolphins. They've been playing them since week one. And they put Jason McCourty over him on the depth chart, but they didn't get him reps, and he's made mistakes. He's busted in coverage. Last few weeks, he's looked real good. And all of a sudden he's knocking cordial that's our job, and he's their starting deep safety. You gotta let your rookies grow. San Francisco doesn't want to do that. San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan gets a rookie. They get an early drafted player. They start to put them in the program in the facility in the building. And they see how they prepare and they see how they play. Something rob Shanahan the wrong way. They got a 5th round corner down below lenore. Looked great in the preseason. Made one mistake against the eagles. Big busted coverage big touchdown. He's been a healthy scratch last two weeks. They're starting Josh Norman and Drake Kirk Patrick over this guy. He can actually cover Patrick's like 35, man. He can't do it. He's got to get run over by James Conner the whole game. You know, you need to get your young players Brad and I you, Dante Pettis, Joe Williams, Trey sermon. You got to get these guys on the field and let them grow. Let them make mistakes and develop. It's hard to be the smartest dude in the room and deal with being wrong occasionally. Deal with guys being slower than you occasionally. He Shanahan wants to get it all right and win right now. He believes he can. And when Brandon and I you run the wrong route in practice one day and Shane and he goes, I'm not dealing with it anymore. But Muhammad Sanu. And he knows my system. He's not going to make mistakes. I can get this whole thing done by myself. So he's just isolated himself a little bit. He's made it all about him. He's got a lot of control in the front office, and he's decided this is the way it's going to go. And accordingly, they're making sacrifices with their young players. They're going to have to pay that piper eventually. Okay, this is really good. We're off to a great start because if I were to say, because I have a buddy who played quarterback, not he played in college, nothing exciting. And he thinks Shane hands terrible. And I'm like, no, he's not, because I'll say, are you kidding me? Like look what he did with Kirk Cousins, okay? Look what he did with Matt Ryan. You know, in 2018, he had to play Nick Mullen CJ about third and Garoppolo. I think only had three starts that year when they went forward to it. They get to a Super Bowl with Garoppolo, who I don't think is any good, by the way, that's my personal preference. And then last year when you look at the record and somebody comes at me and they're like, look at all of their inactives last year. That team was like, historically devastated. And so they'll be good. And I like the talent and whatever. And then we see this version of it again. Whatever that final score was against Arizona is completely in assuming they got smoked by an Arizona team that was missing all of its key offensive players. That can't happen at home. And I don't think they'd want a game at home on top of everything else. So I read your piece in the IU examples terrific because we've seen how you kind of tearing it up a little bit. This guy's a presence out in the field and you're going, oh wait, they traded. Did they trade up for him? I know they traded it up for. Yeah, they traded it for him. Played him a lot in his first season. Benched in this year for Trent sure field. He had like a hamstring. And then they got injuries in front of him. He said, put him back on the field. It looks great. Yeah, right. So, you know, I'm watching him go, wait, this guy was the prop. So what you're telling me is my argument is still valid, but that at this point, Shanahan is getting away in the way of Shanahan the game caller. Yeah, exactly. When I tweeted out the piece, he always tried to get a good hook on the tweet, right? Get some buzz. I wrote about the two men who are running the ship into the ground. Kyle Shanahan head coach and Kyle Shanahan the personnel exec because we got to remember he's wearing different hats in the building. And every head coach does to a certain degree, right? And that's the important thing to talk about. Bill Belichick runs the personnel office in New England. And everybody in the entire world thinks that they can do that. Every head coach is like, yeah, I can do it. No, you can't. Bill Belichick's doing it. He is the exception that proves the rule. See, Bill O'Brien, Houston, Texans, 2019 to 2020. We can't do it like this. But Shanahan took that job in part because he knew the GM was going to be a guy that he would sign off on. And he knew that John lynch was kind of first time personnel exec. And that gave him a lot of power in that room. And so there are two separate guys here. You can even argue three separate guys in terms of Shanahan, the Sunday play callers. The designer on the chalkboard, which we know is top shelf. Shanahan the personnel executive who looked at the draft board in 2017 and said, Joe Williams isn't on here. I want Joe Williams. Let's trade for Joe Williams. They trade up in the fourth round for a running back at a Utah who had less than a year of starting. He never saw a regular season snap for them. That's Shanahan the personnel executive, getting greedy, just wanting a fast player good player, not being risk averse, not thinking about the future. And then there's Shanahan the player developer. I like to call him the coach Monday to Saturday. Because I love Shannon on Sunday. I want him on my sideline. Monday to Saturday. They have a problem in San Francisco with how they how they get prepared how their guys get out on the field, how these young guys are developing. So there are different hats that Shanahan wears. "Feel like usually those guys end up being starter. So that was a little weird other than mike mcglinchey. I feel like tom. Cotton was the guy that got crushed on the forty niners offensive line. A lot. People did not like him And i'm a little stunned beyond the compton. Two rookies like that's your off. And this is not an offense. It's easy on offensive lineman. You've got to do a lot of different things. You've got to be fast enough to get out on the edge and now with this jewel quarterback system you got to essentially get used to two different cadences. It's not an easy thing for an offensive lineman to handle on the niners. Have two rookies of their offensive linemen. Yeah david lombardi brought up this point. David lombardi of the athletic He said that the offensive line depth on this active roster is really thin. I mean they're starting five. I think is going to be a really good unit and will monitor kind of their advanced metrics as the year goes on things are they'll end up being a top ten unit. Both run blocking aunt pass block. I mean trent williams and tomlinson were fantastic last season. And then you had alex mack to stabilize the center position. Mike mcglinchey in is added weight. I think that group up front is going to be really good. It's really if any one of those guys get hurt. Misses some time with like a covert related thing. That's when the forty niners might be screwed up front because all of a sudden now if anyone or your guards go down. Is tom cotton going to step. In as aaron banks you know who they invested a second round pick and is he gonna step been Who hasn't really looked good during this preseason in his in his limited you know showing and then he got hurt. Just a lot of concern up. You know upfront. I was jalen more. I think flashed a little bit but again he was also a day three pick and now he's your swing tackle. So either she. Or trent williams were to miss time now he gets inserted there so all of a sudden there could be situation where you look up and opposing pass rusher in the nfc west like you know is going up against Jalen warren Could be worrisome. Just given you know their quarterback situation. So i would be. I would be monitoring offensive line market pretty closely. I do expect jake. Brendel the the center they released to be back on the practice squad as our report that he he will most likely be back but beyond that it looks thin and get invested a second round. Pick you know. Different parts of this offensive line could miss time and it seems like the forty niners are banking on like well. If it's only one dude we can make it work. But if it's multiple at the same time i agree they could be in a world of trouble. Well add so on sunday. They played against reiter. Backups i understand but the starting off you know starting five played up front. They didn't allow a single pressure according to focus and that was the first time. I'll preseason and i think they only allowed four pressures total as a as a unit and you know that was keyed. Obviously because on that first opening drive where he moster just gashed the raiders. And there wasn't necessarily you know these long passing opportunities there but that starting five they can stay healthy for a majority of the season in keep both garoppolo and trae lance clean. I have a hard time seeing. How opposing defenses. Slowdown this offense. Just given the fact that they can run a variety of ways and then all of a sudden they hit you with the play action behind it and the biggest achilles heel these past few seasons has been passed protecting in deeper drop type situations and if they can do that successfully then you know. And i've been hearing that dwell has been you know stepping up to so i i like the tight end room It's obviously kill and a bunch of other people but i think it's better the depth. There is better than it has been recently. I was gonna say you're right about the jordan mathews and being an inland blocker. That's really important. As often so. I thought michael pruitt could potentially add value because that was his role with the titans in the past he was. He was an inland blocker. Similar to the guys that they've had in the past in the guaranteed him. I think five hundred thousand dollars so by cutting their also eating an extra five hundred thousand dollars. So that's why. I thought pruitt maybe have the inside edge to being kind of the fourth tied on on this roster but i think. Kp noted that jordan mathews was getting all the reps ahead of pruitt in practice when he was down there. So guess like either tight end And the chose to release both of them. And i don't expect there to be a big market for either so potentially land back on the the roster or the practice squad Down line so moving along wide receiver another position. "We have talked about the quarterbacks. And i could keep doing that forever but i wanna move on. You mentioned deebo samuel and brandon. Iu i want to see a couple of things from them one. I mean no one gets universally praise like brandon. I you've sung praises on this show. Kyle has been at practice and he keeps saying how basically the only one that could even come close to guarding him. His jason ver to see this jump from brandon. Iu because we're talking up a big game. But i've seen that happen with forty niners wide receivers before cough cough dante pettis cough cough so i would like to see. I show me something tomorrow night. And don't worry about the dante. Pettis thing i don have had has got put in the doghouse. Kyle shanahan just did not like him. and i don't think he was as talented overall. Is brandon you so what. I don't think we have to worry about that. And he has been shining in practice. I wanna see deebo samuel. Get out of this healthy. And it's catching deep balls down the field and all preseason. He does that like he looks really really good from a fantasy perspective. Is that enough for you to maybe bump him up in your drafts or you like who cares. It's preseason nothing. He does is really going to change it one way or the other probably nothing will change it too much honestly if he starts doing that then. His draft price will increase a lot. And then i'm definitely not touching him. Because i already not interested at its current draft price which is not even until the eighth or ninth round. But if you starts creeping up in the six seventy i'm not. I'm not touching him. i'm happy to at brandon. I but the thing is this team runs through george kettle. And i think it will also be second through brandon. There's just not enough passing attempts in this offense to make deebo samuel consistent fantasy asset and i. i don't really care. If we see that he's connecting the passes like he's still going to be used shore and his average target is just going to be way too way too short to be able to. You know you're going to have to need ten targets out of him to have a good fancy day or he has to get into the end zone and those are just two things. I don't want to rely on my wide receiver three on my team. Does that change at all. If lance is named the starter. I think it might make it worse for him. "What is going on what's going on. Kp a little jealous. You've got boots on the ground at forty niners training camp. You've got all the intel inside information. Got all the scoops and so we're excited to talk through all that stuff. Today's episode it's fun. I'm not gonna lie man. It's it's locked so watching. Football watching the football at the nfl level is a hauler thing and just seeing different perspectives. I actually appreciate that. You know we can see and that's the beauty of football. You know i can watch something you can watch something. Rabkin watt shopping. And we can all come away with different takeaways. And i don't think there's anything wrong with that and some of our stats may be off but It's it's entertaining and got a few more days to go so looking forward to it. Speaking of he suffered a pretty scarier. What seemed to be pretty significant injury on monday. Ran into quick. Rundown of the forty-ninth injuries. So it's it hasn't been a week yet. Knock on wood. There have not been any significant injuries. And hopefully it stays that way so a made it out of practice with pads on after one day but as these are shy went down with what looked to be like a season ending injury. Like look bad bad but the team got a diagnosis on tuesday. And he's now only going to miss a few weeks maybe two maybe three weeks with a knee sprain so shannon said there's not going to be any long term damage of team fears are there. They're not he's not gonna suffer from any long term damage so that's good because shire has looked good. He has looked a lot more comfortable. He's look more athletic. Deebo samuel did not practice on tuesday either and that was the first time he has. It wasn't a a maintenance day. Because some of the guys like nick bosa. George kettle have received those but deebo samuel has some groin. Soreness and shanahan's playing down like teams just being precautionary. So there's nothing to worry about. A dixie samuel joking with fred warner after practice. He didn't have any sort of limp in his gate. So that might matter but you know. He has suffered from these little injuries. So i don't know man. It's a on on the one hand i want to say it's not a big deal but you just never know with these guys. So hopefully he's back out there tomorrow looking as fast as he has been because he is a very good player and he makes this team just more dangerous in general A few other injuries dante johnson. Jimmy garoppolo As of so from wednesday through tuesday trae lance has received the one rep with the first team. Naturally everybody exploded in lost their minds after that. One rep so. This was just the way when people see this. they think. Oh he's throwing to george carlin brand-new and to just to clarify the wide receivers in just a skill guys in general. They're working with every quarterback so ice catching passes from nate suffield. He's catching passes from jimmy g. He's all over the place so don't judge. Judging by who. The offensive line is trey lance today. Snap from alex mack. Bat is what matters far more than whoever he's throwing a pass to so that was just a design. Run that the caution and said he wanted to see lance and how it looked with the stars because that's probably what he's going to do but let's just start there and leave it there because he's gone out of his way so far early on in training camp to tell the public. I'm going to run the ball with trae lands. He's all but said that. And that's essentially the only time we really hyped. Him up is when he's talking about on the ground and it feels like he just wants to lions eagles in every other team in the nfl to know you're gonna have to spend time preparing for my running package with trae lance. That's a good point and just back to what cow shanahan has kinda said about trae lance It feels very muted He's been that way with rookies and the younger players on this team in the past. Whether it's been dante pettis or brandon. I u Or akilah witherspoon. He's typically gone out of his way when he's had you know media sessions at press conferences to be more critical of these players and not as complementary. And it's kind of in the same way with trae lance. He's tried really hard despite the questions that he's constantly peppered with two not anoint him as anything or to not publicly credit him what he's done during training camp and you've seen iran you thought. Today was his most impressive outing yet. Even after today's Spectacular throw or whatever cash will still kind of hesitant to throw that preys on him and he's kinda slow playing the whole thing and yeah like you mentioned. I think the running package or the running element is what shanahan has most talked about. And i think it's what most of us anticipate Trae lance be used as at least early in the season until if and when he becomes starting quarterback for this team to be used as a short down or a third down red zone. Kind of runner. We anticipate there to be like a tray. Lance package in the offense and you know jimmy garoppolo to step off the field on certain a plays or certain snaps and trae lands to get those reps. And i think that'll only integrate him into the offense more. It'll get more comfortable with you. Know takings nassar mocks mac or just playing in different situations. And that's how the integrate him early on and the other thing is if you're a defensive coordinator that's playing against the forty niners offense now. Not only do you have to prepare for the jimmy. Garoppolo short game aerial passing attack. You're gonna also have to prepare for trae. Lances running rushing attack and the more things that defensive coordinators have to worry about that more more the advanced to cal shanahan mike mcdaniel and his offense staff right. They've got more things to throw out a posing defense and that's just going to cause more headaches so i think that's where we're going to see early on. I think a lot of the plays so far during campfire. You know. I'm not there but just from reading between the lines. It sounds like a lot more running plays for trae lance than passing places that correct. Yes so the first time he comes in the game. It's a run and the first few days of just like a simple zone read and i say simple like he's not gaining yards because he's just faster than the people that are trying to tackle him but Today it kind of evolves as a play called bash where you just think of inside zone where the quarterback hands off in this in bash. The running back is running. Parallel to the line of scrimmage like he's running a sweep and he's running away from the sorry. I should say in the opposite direction of pulling guard and lance is now running inside zone. So he's their essentially they're switching Lobbing roles right yep and that's pretty interesting because obviously you see running back the lateral the linebackers go that direction too and it led to endure..
