No charges have been filed against the skipper yet and the probe is still ongoing. The prosecutor, chief Giuseppe Borelli, says when the crash happened, Vaughan was sunning herself on the bow of the boat. The prosecutor adds blood samples were taken from the skipper, but for now the results were inconclusive. "But Carl, he's someone who, if I were to draw up a list of guys who I think are going to have huge seasons, he might be right near the top because we know how motivated he's going to be coming off that lost 2022 season. Right. And look, I think buster, the operative word in all of these things is motivation. And whether it's because you self inflicted damage to yourself and you couldn't perform, whether it's because you are hurt and now are healthy, well, there's clearly players who are in free agent years that are motivated to do as well as they can and unfortunately, it implies that there are years where they're not as motivated as they would be in this particular season. And that part kind of sucks. I don't necessarily understand why every game and every year, you're not as motivated as you would be. But there are clear factors that increase level of motivation. He certainly is motivated. The same way that Nick Castellanos is motivated the same way that Jack clarity is motivated for different reasons, but you'll understand there's kind of a heightened level of motivation. Adam Wainwright and his last year, he's always motivated. Maybe there's another level of motivation because I want to leave on a high note. These are all very individual concepts of what's motivating me, but yes, he's certainly in the top three or four players who have every right and reason to be motivated. Yeah, my son does fantasy baseball. And I've told him, you should drag nanotechnology. Junior, you should jump a couple of rounds to get him because I could see him being huge. I could see Manny Machado. A year in which he's now going to be surrounded all year by an improved lineup having tattoos junior hitting in front of him. You know, I assume Soto's hidden in front of him maybe Xander Bogart's heating behind him. It's an opt out year for him. I could see him going big. I spent a couple days with Carlos Correa last week. I think he's going to have a huge year. You can feel his investment in 2023 based off of what happened this wintertime, maybe wanting to prove people wrong. You know, maybe because he's another guy buster. Dansby Swanson, you know, anybody that was that was passed over. Xander bogarts is motivated because the Red Sox didn't pay him. Dan's response is going to be motivated to show the brave screwed up, you know? And so again, a very individual, but yeah, all the names you're talking about absolutely fit into that group of there's real reason to and your son and the fantasy is a perfect example. Find somebody coming off a down year. Find somebody who's got this other level of motivation, then it's another baseball season and I'm trying to put up numbers. Kyle Tucker, the Astros is someone I sort of had pegged because of the depth in that lineup now, now that you had a Jose Abreu to you're down Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, you know, I saw him a couple times last week. He looks terrific. They feel like he's going to be able to come back and play. You know, you hope he can stay healthy. You know, the fact that he's going to have a good right handed hitter probably batting behind him in the lineup. Maybe that's going to turn out to be Jose Abreu. I think Kyle Tucker is going to have a huge year in vault into the top ten and the MVP conversation the American League. Bo Bichette, you know, who last year as good as his overall numbers were, there's some ups and downs. And I think there's something to prove for Beau in terms of his defense. I agree. And I could see him having a big year. And we talked on the podcast about Corey Seeger and how he is projected by a lot of these analytical systems as having being a guy who's really going to benefit from the change in the defensive shift rules and what you can do there. I can see Corey Seeger having a big year. Yeah, I would absolutely see most left handed hitters having bigger years than they did when they were they were shifted. And those are some of the bigger names in baseball. I think some of these rule changes and this is another big name who I think is going to benefit dramatically as a guy like Trey Turner. Just to literally the bigger bases, I have Trey Turner is a 40 40 guy. I think that ballpark is conducive to Homer's truest park is conducive to homers. There's a couple of other parks in the division he plays in now. I think he'll steal 40 bags. He was he's been very close before. Corbin Carroll's a name that we don't throw around very often in Arizona, but that's a dude that can absolutely fly his defense is incredible. I think he's another guy that I would put on a list. If you look at Cincinnati, there's not a lot to look forward to, but hunter green was ridiculous in September and October last year. And throws a hundred plus miles an hour. Because I think in New York and you know how I feel about this guy, but Michael king was this valuable reliever when he was pitching as there was last year, and he dealt with that terrible elbow injury, but he didn't need Tommy John surgery. He's back throwing again. I think he has the best stuff on the on the entire staff. I think that's an all star this year. So this is just a couple of other names of guys that I think are going to have big years this year who may not be the Fernando tatis juniors of the world. All right, I'm going to throw some over under that you in a moment with team wins based on projections coming out of Vegas. But before we do that, I want to ask you about conversation happening in the Yankees camp about the Yankees mulling the possible move of Aaron judge to left field when Giancarlo Stanton needs to play in the field and potentially in the Yankee Stadium. As you know, if Stanton is in the, you know, plays a defensive position playing in right field. There's less room to cover in that ballpark and judge indicated a reporter that he's totally fine if that's something Aaron Boone wants to do. Carl, I got to tell you like this is surprised me that it's taken this long for this conversation to take place. It always made more sense to me that the better defender you want to have playing a left field versus right field in Yankee Stadium. Yeah, man, look, I think that was personnel driven for the most part because they felt they had a less yield or prior to Bader showing up when you could move hicks over there. It was a really good defensive player. That was an issue if you're just talking about Bader Stanton and judge what Stanton's playing. Absolutely makes perfect sense. And he proved he could play center field, let alone left field. So and he's that type of person. He's that player. He's got that contract. I'm sure if they said Aaron, we'd like to think about you, maybe at first base he'd say, sure. You tell me what's best for this team that's going to help us win.

"And I'm assuming you guys do your own projections internally. Yeah, we do. I'm always curious. Our guys will do stuff and I'll always challenge them. And again, it's not that I'm glass half empty, but I think in these jobs, I think there's some value to be in that way because it keeps you on your toes and I think worrying and trying to think about where you don't have enough steps and so on is a good thing. So I spent a lot of time trying to think about having injuries or guys not performing and so on. But I'm always curious about it. When we have a good wind projection total, I'm always skeptical of it. And I'm always asking why and trying to compare and so on. And I've seen all of them, but I can tell you at least my first three years, I think, of being in Atlanta. I think we're probably projected to finish in third place or fourth place, at least I would say. And obviously we won the division and things worked out. So I am aware of it. I think we're a good team, but I also think that the Phillies and the mets are really good teams as well. I think Miami's gotten a lot better. And obviously the Nats are in a rebuild in their ultimately going to get there. They've done that with the management team they had there. They've been very successful over time. So my view of it is just get to the playoffs. Of course, you want to win the division, no doubt about that. But just get in, winning the division does not guarantee anything. We won the division for 5 years. I've been here. We've advanced past the first round twice. So it certainly doesn't guarantee anything. But I just want to get in and I think the NL is going to be tough as it always says. Yeah. The Phillies are an example of that last year. You guys were an example of it the year before. And playing deep into the postseason. When you hear 91.8, what was your initial reaction in your when you heard that number? I mean, I guess it's in my mind for some reason I've always, I always view was like 85 ish is where you want to be because then obviously there's a randomness to get better and so on and Phillies were the last team to qualify at 87 wins last year. I believe that that was the amount. So I think as long as you're somewhere in the mid 80s, you've got a shot. It's nice to be have an 90 or 91, 92, and so on. It's just that things can change so fast, right? Guys have bad years, we don't expect. Guys get hurt. I know all that's baked into it. But I just don't put a ton of stock into it. I'm curious. But we don't make any predictions. I don't take a look at our internal projections and say, wow, we're a one and a half behind the mats, so we're two inch behind the Phillies and why don't we go sign a two wind player three win player and try to nudge that amount over it. It doesn't work that way. So I think we've got a good club. I think we've got a competitive club, but I go into every season worrying and thinking about how are we going to get back to the playoffs and worrying about how we're going to get back to the playoffs. And I guess I would say anything that's more from a positive standpoint with our wind projection I'll probably play at least. Put a ton of weight into it because I'm wired to worry. And I think we'll just do a much better job as a baseball operations group. If we're expecting the worst and we're just preparing for it. So the Yankees are kind of in a theoretically a parallel situation to you guys at shortstop. And Brian cashman and the way that he's presented that is, is that it's a wide open competition. They're going to be open minded to see what they see. With Dan to be Swanson moved on, von Grissom, you know, being a guy that you guys have talked about this winner. What's your perspective about the shortstop position? Are you going in saying, hey, you know, we're committed to trying to make this work with him? Are you going in? We'll see what we see. I think it's we'll see what we see. And then our manager will make the call there, and we're not committing to anything at this point. I think the biggest thing is, look, you're not, I've never viewed it that you're replacing an individual player. And really when you get down to it from season to season, you replace the season that the player had. So we had 101 games last year, dansby Swanson was a 6 win player. That's not to say you're expecting people to reel off 6 wins each year. Obviously, they might get hurt. They might not have a strong year. But that doesn't mean that we're expecting to come close to that. But maybe other areas of the ball club can make up for that. So I fully expect this to not be as strong as shortstop in 2023 as we are. It's almost impossible to do to get what we got in 2022. That's not to say that we can't still be a very good team in a playoff team. Maybe we make up some of that talent and some of that war in some of the other areas of the ballclub. So snit has talked about, hey, I might split the job. But it's ultimately going to be going with the hot hand. If this has happened over the course of time with our club, you go in with certain plans, somebody isn't playing as well as someone steps up and plays well. You take Contreras for us last year. There was no expectation that he would get the line share of the Egypt. That's what he played so well that he did. Or let me trade it for Adam Duvall. He was going to be able to player. And ultimately became an everyday player for us. So long gris and Orlando arcia will compete will absolutely use spring training to make a determination to how they look. But that might change a week into the season two weeks in the season three weeks in the season. And we're just going to go with a hard hand and whatever gives us the best chance to win. If that's someone getting full-time starts, if that's someone splitting time, we're just going to try to put the best team we can out on the field. But we understand that we will not be as strong as shortstop, but hopefully in other areas will improve from where we were in 2022. Last one, before we go, Dana brown leaves your front office becomes a general manager of the Houston Astros the last couple of years when I called you about, hey, where did Michael Harris come from? Where did Spencer strider come from? I remember you on saying to me, look, I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but that was Dana Brown. The U.S. coast guard is hard at work in the days since hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida, vice admiral Kevin lundy says, Cruz have helped hundreds of residents. My extra special guest this week is David mcraney. He is a science journalist and author of a new book. How minds change? The surprising science of belief opinion and persuasion. He is also a two time winner of the William Randolph Hearst award. So let's talk about how minds change. I want to start by asking, how did a flat earther inspire this book? I actually came a little later in the process. There was a documentary on Netflix. You may have seen it behind the curve. And the producers of that were fans of my podcast and they grabbed a couple of my guests for the show and everything. And I thought it would be, I would love to help promote something. I didn't know this, but someone told me I was in the credits and I looked in the credits, it was like, thanks to David mccraney. And I was like, oh, wow. So I emailed them and said, hey, you want to come on my podcast. We'll talk about your documentary because if I had gotten a chance to make a Netflix show, it would have been very similar because it seemed like it's about flat earth, but it's actually about motivated reasoning. And identity and community and things like that. And community community is a huge part of it, right? A group identity. And after that episode, they a group in Sweden. They put on something like south by Southwest, called the gather festival. They asked, hey, we got this crazy idea. What if you go to Sweden and we'll get Mark Sargent who is sort of the spokesperson for the flat earth community and we'll put you on stage and I know you're writing a book about how minds change, you can try to try out some of those techniques on them. And I was like, oh, that sounds awesome. So I did. I went. And I met Mark and I found very nice, very lovely man. And I did try some at the point where I met him. I was about halfway through. And that wasn't great at the techniques, but I did an okay job. So you mentioned several different groups, the street, epistemology, and the deep canvassers were really fascinating in the book. So a quick background, a well funded group in California. We're trying to convince people to support the marriage equality act. Which ultimately ends up failing in California by three or 4%. And they had done thousands of home visits, knock on the door. Hey, we want to talk to you about this act and why we think you should support it. And the failure of that was a real moment of clarity and they said we have to rejigger everything with doing because this is totally ineffective. And the methodology they came up with that standing shoulder to shoulder and let's figure out why you really think let's explore why we think so differently. You know, in politics and in a single issues, if you can move somebody a tenth of a percent. That's right. It's huge. Their impact is a hundred times at its 10%. Ten to 12%. It's astonishing. Tell us a little bit about what this group does. That's so effective when they're supporting a specific issue. Yeah, the background you gave exactly happened. They wanted to understand how they lost and they went door to door asking they came up with this idea this day fleischer who runs the leadership lab. UCLA or USC on the LGBT center of Los Angeles. "Talk about Shane Bieber who last night another great start and it was looking at his numbers this morning. Mad.
