"Welcome back Blackhawks leading the biggest gold knights by a score of 2 to 1. After one period of playtime for first period discussion. We had down the hallway to the Wintrust Blackhawks broadcast booth for a few minutes with primary good overall periods just to heat to see that one goal at the end. Get away from them because they had some good vibes going after Alex to bring Kim made it two to nothing would have been nice if they got out of that period to nothing, but you know, you'll take 2 to 1. It's a good start to this game. I thought Cory looked really good. Vegas had some good opportunities, but the Blackhawks created some good pressure offensively when they had it in the zone. Robin Leonard. I still think he looks a little bit shaky right now. I think you should really test him and have that mindset. He's leaving some rebounds. The one thing that I had as faras criticism when he was playing for the Blackhawks is he's a big goaltender. And a lot of times he doesn't absorb poxy blocks Puck. So there's a lot of loose pucks around the blue paint area in a few. Have that willingness to get in there against a big Vegas defense. You're going to get opportunities, just like Jonathan tapes did on his goal. Well, first we're talking about only model. A lot is counter Murphy spending some time with Danny Savard. What a movie There has set up that second goal. I've never seen that in his reference his repertoire there, that's for sure. It was a great play, though, Do you mean There's no other way that he could've spun away from that high forward for Vegas, and I'm sure that the Vegas player problems like Whoa, What was that on golf? A sudden it opened up a quick two on one download. Dylan Strome Nice little Passover to break and all she had to do is tap it in to the wide open. That's so Could play all around. Nice play by Brandon Saad, who I thought had an excellent period in that 1st. 20 minutes. If you look at Brandon Sodhi's plus two, we had an assist three shots on goal, which Tight, Alex to break it three and three of those six chart of six shots coming up out of the Blackhawks 10 in the first period. So Brandon Saad, starting that playoff into the offensive zone, turning it up getting it Connor Murphy with good, hard, Chris Pass and allowing him to make that play. Quick. Thought here before we let you cut you loose on the on the lineup move made today Alex Neal and her out. And once again, Jeremy turning to John Quinn Ville Teo to fill that wrote one roster spot up front. Well, you could only wait so long for a player to show something in the playoffs and for Alex. Knee Lander 8.5 minutes last game. 11 shots in the in the eight games. So far, no points. No shots in the last game minus for he just hasn't added anything to the equation. So get somebody in there who's going to do some little things right? The lander is not a strong defensive player. Quenneville can make those type of place. He's a better board player type of guy than the knee. Lander isn't And for Neil and ER, I think it's got to be very disappointing. And I hope he understands that he needs to be way better than what he has shown here. And I think for Jeremy, call it in. He had a long fuse on this one. Gave him a lot of leniency as faras ice time and and games in this playoff series, But you just can't wait forever to have somebody show up and make some plays and do what he's supposed to do when Bill for 44 of ice time with a couple of hits and a couple of blocks, shots as well, some of those last when he played the one game, he only played over six minutes, but they had chased that game. So they kind of had to shorten the bench a little bit. I don't know how much offensive Input he's goingto have into the lineup, but he does all the little things right. So as long as you're in a position where you're tied, or you're in the lead, Quentin was going to get a regular shift. I would think all right second period on its way. We'll let you rest up. Get some grub as well. We'll come back with first period highlights. Next down 7 20 w G N good things come in Threes. Three pointers, Triple.

Blackhawks Alex Neal Knee Lander Brandon Saad Neil Robin Leonard Cory Vegas Connor Murphy Jeremy Bill Brandon Sodhi Dylan Strome Jonathan tapes Quenneville Danny Savard Quentin Kim John Quinn Ville Teo

"One of my favorite stories Abo- Joe Newin Dyke is. When. He was drafted cliff. Fletcher told me a story that Calgary decided in the second round they were going to take a goalie and three goalies they had on their list were Sean Burke. Troy Gamble and Frank Caprice I. Think the other one was you can look up the draft and three picks before noonday was on. Calgary was on the clock. All three goals were available. And so they're like okay, we're going to get one, and then I think burke wet first, and then there were two picks laughed in. There were two goalies laughed, and then I think it was caprice who went next? then. Okay well. It's still one on our list. And then I think it was gamble and he went right away, so they had three picks before they were to take. All three of their goalies were on their board. And then three picks later, all three goals were got. And they were like holy smokes. What do we do now? And the next guy on their list was joe in Dyke, and and if I'm getting this wrong and I admit I'm doing this from memory I'm not looking it up 'cause I don't WanNa. Use the Internet while I'm doing these quick answers. There are three goalies went right before new dyke, and they were sitting there going Oh my God, what we do and the next guy list was joe new dyke. Like Joe, who was on the front page Calgary Sun the next day. And I told the story a few weeks ago about how he wanted me my hockey pool in two years later by having a fifty goal season out of nowhere also I gotta You, I knew in Dyke. A hugely popular teammate. What a tremendous tremendous guy! This is more your future, but I want to throw in one quick story about Joe Noonday that always stuck with me and this was when he was playing with the Toronto Maple leaves. It was after practice one day and leaves her pulled off to do. scrums and one player is doing a one on one with leafs. TV and there was something wrong with the camera setup, and so it was taking a little while and this unnamed Maple leafs player. has little temper. Tantrum and says you know this. Is Unprofessional. I'm not waiting around all day. I got things to do if you're not ready to bad. And Joe Noonday Creek heard this excused himself from his scrum walked over. This is like a a junior player. This is a senior guy and said that's not how we behave professionals. You go back, apologize and give that camera operator all the time he needs, and he did, and never forgotten that how noonday stepped out of his own scrum to say no. That's not how we're pros here. That's not how we do it. That's awesome. I got all day. Joe Noonday Dyke One more story about him. I remember in When he came with the least met staging was his roommate man state you said stage and had the worst taste and television. Ever. saw used to like to watch the fifth wheel all the time. Oh my Brendan Shanahan. Okay I think I know this one. I think I know this one and we'll see what happens by the end. The might be swerve. My we'll see. We'll see if this is a swerve. Brendan Shanahan well. There's one story about Shanahan absolutely love. We got into. It wasn't a disagreement, but he was unhappy with something that I found out. I don't know if I should tell the story I don't think he would have a problem from his point of view, but involves some other people who are peripheral all, but he was not happy with some information. Ikat and you know we were kind of arguing about it a little bit. It wasn't bad, but we were just you know. He was annoyed and I was defending myself and and I. I I made a comment, and he had just a great snap one liner on. It was really funny. You know when I think of Shanahan I. Just think of a really like the kind of player like if I could play was good enough to play I. would love to be a guy who could score fifty and get two hundred penalty minutes. That's the kind of player I'd WanNa be. Steve, larmer. Well Steve Larmer is I think of a guy who should be in the hall of fame. That's the number one thing I think of right now. I'm I. Did the NHL DOT COM best player to wear the number now did it with Patrick Sharp and One of the numbers I had was twenty eight, and both Patrick, and I agreed that Steve Larmer the best twenty and Nhl History and I think you should be in the hall of fame. I'm part of one of the best lines we saw through the eighties I love that line with Danny Savard LLC, court and Steve Larger Three different personalities, three guys that can do different things and all gel together. That line was awesome Adam foote. Adam foote I saw Adam foote at York del once. That's. The Mall by the way folks, yes. Big Mall in Toronto Remember Malls Remember when we could go to malls later. These malls you speak of Elliott's. I was walking in and he was walking out. He done quite a lot of shopping that day. You know what I remember. What Adam foote was when Colorado won the Stanley Cup in two thousand one. We knew he was banged up and I said to him after we were interviewing him live and I said..

"And I don't know why that's the case when no you did finally have a couple of nights often you were back home after that ridiculously tough road trip Brandon's in crystal lake on ESPN one thousand Hey Brandon Hey carmie you're caught I got to say I love your show no doubt about it I gotta say though com you can have a full on rebuild if you're the Blackhawks if you're keeping Patrick Kane and I'm sorry he does you no good if you're trying to rebuild in the next couple of years of some team offers you a first round pick in the second round pick or two once how are you saying no when you're when you're trying to do what's best for your team and truthfully I think as hawks fans I'm glad to be at this point because I grew up with them not even being on TV let alone being good so the fact that we're at the point of we won three cups we want more I think that's great as hawks fans but honestly I'm ready I've seen enough of this I'm ready to tear down let's start over and let's move on HM thanks friend in your in your ex can't that's fine I I just I don't like trading the few rare guys in this league that can still averaged a point per game I I I just I don't I don't I don't like it I understand your frustration I understand what you're talking about how do you replace that guy the problem is you don't have enough depth quality depth to build the very foundation of your team where you're super what your your superstar players are the early the guys that make you special you need some of that kitchen apply you got special players will you that aren't in the playoffs we don't have the bottom yeah founded give yeah were you ever find anybody a specialist after Kane maybe that maybe that would that would you ever gonna find anybody specials Bobby hall with anybody is Stan Makita do we not have Danny Savard here at some point was that Jeremy Roenick part of this organization at some point you know you always say will there ever be here until they get to like them they're here now this would you like all but you know how you're not gonna get him but I by picking fourteen by picking fifteen you're not going to get a better rate trading Patrick Kane that you're going to get a top five pick though either I mean is it I'll let that be true I mean you may not get him you may have to do it for a slew of minor league talent guys that have been your last two three years yeah I mean do you still do plus first round pick second round picks I mean you would have to you you would get something back from him they may not want to trade you guys from their active roster they'll give you a guide from there that young but you're looking at young defenseman carm guys that you know I'm playoff teams that okay there got great talent but they're not breaking the top four because they're just too damn good up there you know it was always a tough conversation when the the white Sox for getting it ready to trade Chris sale and the return for Chris sale is is showing some real promise right like Makana does look like a star yes you were able to get the baseballs you know for but by by most accounts baseball's best prospect or one of baseball's five best prospects certainly at the time nobody was going to argue with that you know can the Blackhawks get that can you get a topic the problem is the only I'll give me the other side the other part of this probably talk about prospects in hockey prospects in hockey on prospects anymore you know what they do they come in the league in their stars company number of nineteen twenty year old kids in this league their stars already twenty one year old there are many I play are you getting one of those players for Patrick Kane are you getting whose where they just played one defenseman in in Vancouver I can't think of his name are you getting the amble I he's got the brothers eject uses brother I can't think of his name I'm sorry I'm bad news Hughes are you getting Quinn Hughes no are you getting Jack are you getting Jack Eichel now you did there are no more but the best hot prospects in hockey there nineteen they come to the NHL and the great they play are you getting that for Patrick Kane this is in baseball were you can pluck a top prospect the inputs I don't know okay so bond has been traded well put that Patrick Kane is ten times better I understand I just have Jones has been straight again I mean I I'm just giving the defense man that I've been top notch defenseman that have been moved I'm solving the directions I mean maybe you know I'm not saying you're solving the problems hi this is not a one guy gets traded knobs on your problems are solved this is a total rebuild you need to tear this thing down to build it back up it's got to be toward when you say will get another team's best prospect if it checks if another team's best prospect is in the minors in this day and age in the NHL they're probably not a very good prospect I'm serious I I've you just while pointed out to you a team which tremendous depth of the defensive position might have a guy who's on your third pairing maybe that maybe when they move the old guys out of something is the guy that can go ahead and try are you getting Ross misspelling for Patrick Kane you don't know probably not you don't know depends of the team wants to win the Stanley Cup winner you know how much they want to win the Cup you get the kid in Colorado the defense in Colorado from probably not the problem yeah that's what I mean like what where are you getting let's see troll in Berlin is on ESPN one thousand what's up Joe Hey you don't come out of the head of prospects he had been there and you don't want to pay up we traded Denis Savard back in the day who do we get that get a thirty cups no come closer and closer not really I mean you got the one that's right that's closes in it's not winning it we want to limit I don't want to be in the dance you know what I mean at the end we're not in the dance with five words right outside looking at right now date prospects are going to get you there believe me that you just said all the night you are playing Charlie says no harm if you build your draft choices you can trade two number ones for number one you can move up and get a player that you might actually identified you might like you can't tell me that when you have a number of assets that you can't move up you can't yeah yeah that could be yeah I see we're saying you get if you stockpiled if you have enough to move up in the draft thank you your train can probably routine that's not gonna be picking very high Johnson Schomburg on ESPN one thousand eight John Hey guys I don't agree with trading Patrick Kane I mean he's like a once in a lifetime players so you know he's up there with the crowd's bees and they'll badge again but when it comes to their problems their power play hurt so what you're actually paying us like they don't want to shoot the puck they want to do all these fancy passes and they want to put in the cycle that's great we're glad you can pass but they don't fire enough to get rebounds there one shot and done are broken they get it done and it's getting so frustrating to watch to wear I have tickets to the game on the twenty second not even in March I don't even know want to go with a plan with a plan that night on the twenty second March to be a good game Johnny thanks buddy in it is painful watch our play right now I got national I'm going to see the Dallas game on the twenty seventh way I'm thinking about poking my eyes with pens for Dallas is good by the way I'm thinking about trying to go to at Pittsburgh game next month to the still some good dates on the schedule unfortunately looks like they're not gonna be planned for what they trade Ryan Kesler forty remember them the cannot so I I don't I don't I have to go back and look at what's out yeah but that's the one I'm Tom but these are by the way I found a crime I know we're up against a break yeah December tenth through February first twenty two game stretch the black ox red thirteen eight and one okay twenty seven twenty seven points out of twenty to gain knowledge it's just even that Saban's their best stretch of the year and you're not getting an answer twenty two games thirteen oh saying over the last twenty two because they played sixty if they replicated their bass stripped bass still coming up only with eighty seven eighty seven points is not make the plan you're not gonna make it three one two three three two three seven seven six that's the number comes in stocks talking to Mel B. big picture stuff with Danny please sack from the MLB network in the market for coming up next listening to Carmen in your ESPN one thousand Chicago sold for sports what Sir are you surprised at the lack of change with personnel I mean people just sometimes want change the change we have a very good thing John what bothers you most about this Astros cheating scandal I'm kind of not very happy about it but I want to get back to talking about two thousand I missed something your old podcast on ESPN Chicago and still the week day on ESPN one thousand Chicago is home for sports when you're looking for a snack mix mix grabs a snag makes made for beer lovers lovers brew house legends it's this Max makes in flavors that makes perfectly with beer and things beer lovers like to do do like suggesting the rest might be blind or loudly insisting rest might be watching entirely different game or yelling at the top of your lungs that they have their head so far up there you know "They are not necessarily a friend to paying. Or maybe is. Maybe isn't but a former teammate. And I love looking at some of the stats when the balloon blackhawks would play. It seemed to me and this happens. Now when they play Winnipeg they will line is going to score. When the loser play Blackhawks I felt like larmer always scored I can hear Pat Foley voice saying Larmer he had at four hundred forty one career goals Sort of an underrated play did WANNA call trophy. Couple of All Star appearances when I say the name. Steve Larmer which your blink. I say the most underrated hockey player and underappreciated hockey player. Maybe in the history of the game I think that and I watch you know I go back and I I I. I watched some stuff from before because I you know I. I know that the game has changed now. I know that they're faster. And the blades are better and equipment slater and all that kind of stuff but I I've gone back and watched a little bit just as just to confirm in my memory. Bank is he a hockey hall of Famer is not a hockey hall of Famer and I would say on. In every given night he was he was the best two way forward that I saw. He was great offensively but he was the one on the defensive side of the Puck for for Danny Savard that was always there and as a left hand shot I. He was one of the first guys that I remember. That played right wing so he would take that puck off off the off off the boards on the right and then you get that stick in the middle of the ice and he would move. That puck either back to a defenseman Or and get up the eyesore rate up to Danny Savard and he was often running and so Is reliable players. You'll find and played through incredible injuries and never complained one bet And the last part I'll add about Steve. Larmer armor is his best friend was Darryl Sutter and when Darryl Sutter retired in eighty seven became an assistant coach he then became a head coach in like like ninety. One Ish 92-ish ninety three. I'm not sure exactly the year And Steve Larmer is such a good person and a good soul and and wanted to make sure that they were friends for life but he didn't like the way coached. He didn't like the way he was as a coach. He liked him as a friend and as a teammate as a player and so he asked for the trade which broke his consecutive game streak which he never missed a game except he held out to get the trade eventually going to the New York Rangers and winning the Stanley the only cup in ninety four so that also says a lot about the man. Well we could do a whole show on the centers to I forgot. dwayne was when Duane and Brent where they twins maybe now I know Richie Ronnie Duane Brand Brian. Anyway I'm falling down the The rabbit hole. It must be the end of the year all just sort of loopy and having fun and we'll do Louis show just on the sutter brothers File close with this any superstitions for Darren Pang. It's New Year's some people kind of have traditions with that and hockey more so than in any sport we do see this And it's a lot of fun stuff to the stick taps growing beards during the playoffs. How about your personal superstitions? I still broadcaster go on and I go on roles of wearing specific things for example It's funny if one goal is has a AH played real well and I've got a couple of rings that I wear and one of them's of one of them's Memorial Cup ring from eighty four and one's Attorney Cup ring from ninety and and I it's been funny that like I remember. I remember going through this twelve games in a row. I have that Memorial Cup ring. Every time Jake Allen played he played well and then I take it off and change it and you know for Jordan Benton and he'd play while it had nothing to do with the Rings I wore but I felt like oh shoot if I don't wear that ring for that particular goal then it's not gonNa work for them and and I went through a cuff link phase as well and And drive to the rink the same way if they win so I go through forest park on my natural way from university sitdown Lindell all the way down. I love going down that way instead of getting on the highway and And and then but if they lose then I then I switch it up and I'll go another route. Do you sense sir. Players are still. I mean maybe it was. I don't know are they still as superstitious as they used to be the players themselves. Yeah I think so. I think you'll find that most guys just too simple apple things Left skied on first election. Pad Left Glove Things like that You Know I. I've found that most of them aren't very superstitious with tape whereas maybe in my day if a guy wasn't scoring chains the tape a lot more than what I see here. Black tape white tape thin tape. A wide tape but but overall I think the goal is would say the same same thing. It's either right Pat I or left pad I and And then things like that. Maybe where you put your stick where you stand in line when you're when you're going out on the ice beforehand but so I I would have imagined that they still have a lot of little superstitions but maybe not as crazy as well we. We had back in our day the morning. Skate is more of a tradition that a superstition position but Craig Ruby a few times. This year is already kind of canceled. Those think it'll ever go away or do you think teams will start scaling back on that. No I think that does go in phases. I think it depends on your practice schedule if you if you have an off day and like today is a good example They did practice. And you know now they're going to Arizona And and he made just say you know what that's an optional tomorrow morning but if he didn't have a practice today then he would make it a mandatory you know. Let's get on the ice. Let's get the legs going here for before they play the Arizona coyotes so But I think when the schedule permits for him to have a An optional I think he likes that. And then if they win and the players feel good then that's even better but the one challenge has is you can't call them optionals because an optional is up to the plague on the ice and what he wants to do half the time get Ryan Reilly off the ice because he'd never comes off it and and so he has to tell him it's not an optional. There is no skate. And that's and there there we go there. We go back to Craig Ruby. It being very very black and white and not very great if he needs to make a point he's gotTa tell the players. This is how it's going to be your skating today. I love these hockey conversations. "I think in the situation you put yourself in skins shoes. I he's an outstanding person outstanding player like I love the guy and you want him to do what's best for him obviously but you also have our teams interests in mind and myself being their long-term I was sitting next to in the locker occur. Um I spent a lot of time with them so I was definitely his year hoping trying to get him to tell me what his plan where if he wanted to come back where his head was that you know he scored forty goals last year. You know how it is. It's it's not easy to replace forty goals in the lineup at all you know so. I think is a huge part of our team so when he signed I I was super pumped. I was surprised I guess I didn't know when it was going to happen. I didn't know if it was going to happen. he kept a lot of his these negotiations. He kept a lot of that pretty close to himself and if you know skins like he's a pretty quiet guy it takes a while to open up to you and if he does he probably wouldn't even still talk about that sort of stuff so I was so happy for him. I mean he's he's such a good person and he's such a good player like he's so so important to our team team and Saas pump the yacht it I mean he worked so hard. He deserves every dollar and I couldn't be happier for the guy true anything before we wrap and we gotta go we gotta go thinks what best of luck this thank you very much. Thank you sometimes do interviews with hockey players. Elliott and that was Jijel. You need to put on your hockey player decoder ring because when they start fighting around nicknames need to figure out who they are pretty fast rhino is well. I thought it was rhino. Riley Reinhardt said it. Here's the thing so reinhardt was not at this event. Ronald Rally was and after we did the Eichel interview for TV. I had interview O'Reilly for a feature producer. Michelotto is doing and I said to him you know. I heard you had a bad performance. I'm one of these weddings. Eichel said he looked at me. Smile is is what are you talking about and finally I realized Oh oh and he goes. I think you're thinking of Sam Reinhardt so your rights as Ryan I was wrong. I Ryan I just O'Reilly was there played for Buffalo the year before in theory that could have been at one of these weddings but apparently it was Sam Ryan her okay the one thing about Jack Eichel that I'm still the one question that I'm still waiting to answer is. How good can this guy be because. I don't think we're going to know how good can be until the Buffalo. Sabres are a good hockey team. I think that's very fair because is this is a guy who takes his game very seriously. He's one of Adam oates as big as clients. He's constantly working on his game but you can see he's a guy. The losing has got I too and like losing socks and they've done a lot of it and he talked before how he's worked on not trying to show the frustration one of the biggest critiques chiefs showed the front play with break-up and he'd stare at the ceiling or you get mad and they'd skied back. He's worked hard on that but eventually you have to be in a good situation to be at your best and they just haven't been I am a hundred percent with you on this. Where are you out on the Buffalo Sabres. They got a look at the sabers right now. I have a few questions one. What are you GonNa do with all these players Yup because it seems as if right now they have too many too and get that hindsight is twenty twenty but to do you regret playing middle stat in the NHL last season and three. Should you have done something about the goaltending. Those are my questions about the Buffalo Sabres. They really like their prospect. Oh Logan yes fantastic ASPIC. They did something about the goaltending last year I mean. How many years in a row can you do something? Carter Hutton admitted to me last year that you know he didn't realize how hard it was to be a a full time starter. I think you gave him a three year deal. I don't think you blow it up after one year unless you really think it's a disaster you try again and they will. They should be better. You Know Krueger. I think he's a really good coach. I'm curious to see what happens with crystalline. He has refused to say that he's asked for a trade. The belief is he has. I just think they're going to be better. I think the whole division is going to be better like I think Ottawa chance is to be better than everybody thinks but I still think they're a bit away. I don't think they're ready to be a playoff team yet. I just think they're gonNA be better. What did you think lean is games. Sola jet as fantastic What did you make of the Yukari trade I. I was surprised at that one but I had been told earlier that Chicago wasn't high on him as other teams. Were and you always wonder under about that because they know I'm the best. So what did they see that. We're not seeing first of all they also. They have a lot of defense projects. NEULANDER BUFFALO had to to move that just wasn't working. It was time for a change. I liked that deal for Buffalo. I I really liked what I saw him when he played in Chicago. I just heard the blackhawks didn't value him as much. Is You know other teams. Did you wanted to whether he starts a season in Rochester not because of performance or not because of talent but just because of contract yeah a lot of bodies the one thing though I'm a big believer when you're on a team like that you have to show the players. The performance matters players. I've learned understand who deserves to be on a team and who doesn't seem like that where you're trying to make it a meritocracy. Things are earned not given if that kid earns a spot and he can't get it your players notice players. I'm with you on that players know camp. NPS player and the players know who who belong the players also to understand the realities of weaver exempt. Yeah I get all that. I just think Buffalo's trying to do a mentality. Tell the thing right. That's the way I look at it the all in guy the guy that lives breeze. It's sleeps hockey matthew bars all of the New York Islanders. You know it's funny. Whenever I watch Barzel play I. I always think our fridge Danny Savard. I look at Brazil when he starts circling the offensive zone scanning scanning looking for lanes. I go back to the eighties and I'm like man. This guy looks like any savard. He looks like it plays like at that water bug though still rate shied strong player player great on his skates great stride Denise Vard wasn't that guy just when he does that move where he's circling the offensive zone looking for outlets to me. It just looks like Danny Savard interview. He is very much the all in guy this Guy Eats and Sleeps Hockey Matthew Barzel Your Account Ground San Fernando Boulevard one woman also they joined now by matthew bars all of the New York Islanders and Matt. I apologize in advance. The preamble to this question is going to be lengthy. Thank the so Elliott. Let me tell you quickly with the first time I met Matt Bars. All I think the fact that you said quickly is going to be a lie. I know so grap opened up a cup of coffee here. Chill out your feet up Matt so it's Memorial Cup Windsor and with Colby Armstrong Matt's thunderbirds have just finished their first skates and media relations director says who do you WanNa talk to her like ours. All so matt comes over and you're really gracious real nice. You put up with all my stupid questions about junior hockey. I could tell that you really wanted to talk to Colby Armstrong about Sidney crosby so from US interviewing you it turned into you interviewing colby about eighty seven you play against them now. What have you learned about Sidney Crosby in the NHL only speculated about back then yeah. I think I think that's a pretty right on that one but no just planning. It's said I got to see him. Actually at the Vail camp last year that annual Brian puts on just watching him practice like this and Kinda opening to me you know he doesn't miss a pass and practice. He you know he receives every pass. Whether it's an escape or whatnot he tries to score for every single shot and usually does score. Everything shot. Insists intense from susie puts escape on pretty much. It seems so seeing that was pretty cool as a young guy just you know this guy still brings it every day after the NHL for so long three cups I mean what else does he need. He's you know it's mid August and he's he's like lighting. Everybody up uh I think at Camp so playing against some just it was fun and playoffs. Everyone knows how crosby gets in the playoffs USA people out there and it was unfortunate you know for them. Obviously didn't get too many balances that series but you could tell he was focused and intense and did he say anything to you. Enhance shake alley at the end now he just he just said. Good Luck jet get lost. I get lost. I can imagine for your definitely not the only player of your generation who admires crosby that must have been a surreal feeling shaking his hand after that series was over here. I was you know before the series I was you know always see you watch Pittsburgh in the playoffs all the time as a kid and it's like okay planning. It's Malkin and crosby in the playoffs like this is surreal. You know so I was used up. I was excited and didn't let the UH the big stage. Get the best of me I think so I was I was it was fun. It was it was a blast actually plenum efforts playoff series especially in those guys remember Keith Yandell years ago. He told told me that when he went to the playoffs the first time they played against Detroit and he said that he realized very quickly in that series Mike Babcock and the Red Wings had game plan for him and that was a whole other level says in the regular season. They talk about you for ten minutes. You know they're you're looking at you but it's not is in the play offs to realize a whole team was coming after him. He couldn't believe how hard it was. What did you find report that I actually got to meet a key the other week down in Florida this guy so funny. It was unbelievable but I'm just going on that. I mean as an opponent I thinking okay. We got seventy seven games with these guys game one. You know you want to get the kind of the fire started a little bit and but now I could definitely tell Pittsburgh and Carolina for that Carolina. Maybe even more just very very hard on me. It seemed like they just not even individually just as a team. It seemed like they just had our game. Implant figured out and really did a good job of not giving us anything out there so credits them. How much did you guys play with a chip on on your shoulder. Last season beginning of the year rates you off. Islanders basically lottery pick all that and you make the playoffs in stone everybody how much of that was we gotTa Birendra. There are saddle because everyone's written us off. I think definitely absolutely right at the start of the year we saw projections thirtieth twenty nine of US coming yeah. I was like we were such a write off and then started hot and then people were kinda still on the fence and then we just kept on going and kind of just it was like every game. There's a playoff game for us. I share and we we want every point we can get and having Burien obviously with a new defensive system obviously having two boys I share that played unbelievable for us and Kinda on everything just worked out and we just found group during the season and rolled with it and you know we got the same crew back this year so hopefully we can do the same thing what was the best motivational tactic used a boat where everybody was picking. You guys to finish I don't know it was more just kind of look at it and be like really. You know like that's where people are putting us. You know we got a lot of guys on our team to compete in that play hard and you know it wasn't just me that saw that and was kinda embarrassed. It was kind of everybody that was you know and once we started playing well and started being some good teams where we can do this. We're you know we've got a good team here. No matter what people say a lot of people have felt that Nicoletti is underappreciated and there was one game against the oilers still have the visual burned into my brain and allow allow we stay there of him gone stride for Stride Connor McCabe back that it's just like it was one of the great one of the best things I I saw that season in hockey yeah from your point. Reviewers are forward yeah. What some things at Nicoletti does that you sort of step back and say wow. How do you do that because I think he's one of the more we still talk. I still talk to Nikko that two or other guys about that but it was crazy I was honesty. Slow on the back check. We had scored on cosmic. David ended up scoring on that play. You know he did some like one handed backhand pass. The Dry said it was it was sick but I had front row seats and I was just I was almost in all of these two guys two horses coming down the final stretch. Just like nick ended up getting scored on so it wasn't. I didn't get the last laugh. Watch them with a nuclear strike tried with no. He's like people to understand stand. This guy can fly on the ice like we do little relays or something in practice and he burns me. He Burns me good and you know I always tell them like on fast and you know I'm not ah I know I'm not now and it's he's off like he's very tough to play against especially as it. You know for a guy like maybe mcdavid like myself just like to use their speed this guy..

"I recall when they got the team the team was announced and I'm back in Smith's falls Ontario. I'm the sports director of what was then Q. on a one and see jet and I like frantically trying to get someone on the phone down in Florida I finally get Jim d'oro and he was gracious. Awesome to come on. He's been obviously a great friend sports in this town for so long but the first thing he said was yeah. Let's do it <hes> you cut into my beer time and this guy with all the dignity in the world but he was just like party ended up like any other hockey fan at that stage of the game so that one stays with me the day they got the team. The other one was the first sense game ever and two things on that is that carbon comes strolling in you know the short side of the Civic Center and here I am like I couldn't have dreamed as as a local kid that auto would ever get N._H._l.. Franchise and so I'm sitting there waiting for the road team to come rolling in and the habits. I'm basically sitting in that sort of coronary on the short side with guys come in and I grabbed carbon didn't talk to a media relations guy. Didn't I went through all the bad channels. I just directly approached coached him. I said Gee can have a couple of comments. Guy Sits Down with me. I mean I'm losing my mind Liam losing my mind that I'm I'm N._H._l.. Reporter I'm talking to the capital of the Montreal Canadians who later that year would hoist the Stanley Cup coffee and and and he was so gracious and so awesome and I was just blown away by those early days and am I thought was Danny Savard Yeah like how small he was interviewing. The Guy and I'm thinking to myself. I could take this guy. I can take an N._H._l.. Player you definitely could've taken it ended before you go on got a digress because you're talking about Brian Downing and my point and all that was and I flew right over the top of it was he was on the ice so you're you're bang on. He was on the ice at at that time at that training camp and you know he never made the show but he was a hell of a hockey player and again is another guy lives twenty minutes from here is family are all over the place. His cousin lives one of his cousins right across from Carl down a legend in the area. It's a million hockey playing down. He's in this area there there there are and he's the best of the mall but Kevin and Rick is brothers were excellent hockey players as well outstanding junior players and thousand Amazing Time Jim Daryl in Florida and I've said this many many many many times over those years he's got the team than it was announced on Thursday December six right nine hundred ninety I was there but the day before on Wednesday December Fifth Jim Darryl was was essentially leading the press conferences right. He was a kind of guy. WHO's the GO-TO? A to guide it was representing the Ottawa senators when they did their press conferences every day and we'd been down there since the third. I believe we flew in on the third. We flew out an absolute blizzard. We got everybody got rerouted was unbelievable. I hate the a jump all over the place but it was it was it was that was a time for anybody was flying in those days. It remembers on the phone they are in the plane. They adjust put the thing in on the phone where you could put a credit card in and pull the phone out of the thing so I hi at a Canadian tire credit card and I said Oh see what happens popped it in there and the phone popped out my Canadian tire credit cards so iphone Tom Bissett who played the Almonte Centennial's when they want to. Citizens Shield three years in a row war number twenty two toughest nails from special firm bank road well. I knew that I said header call them. I said Tommy got to come to Florida then. You've got to come Florida. It's GonNa be a hell of a party and he said what's going on. I told me this is okay. I'll catch the next night anyways. He comes down. He ends up coming down iphone them on a Canadian tire credit card on a plane flying to Florida in one thousand nine hundred Jim dural on the Wednesday came out and he was exuding such confidence confidence. It was unfrequently well. I don't know what happened behind. Scenes would firestone and Jimmy and the gang obviously the show gang but Jim in the Spain and Hispanic. I've told him this to in the span of forty eight hours something changed you think he knew I think he had a sense that they had touched the nerve that they had said some things done. Some things presented some things or whatever I think he touched center because he was so confident on that Wednesday and then boom Thursday morning whatever it was ten o'clock the announcement comes in Ottawa gets a team and here we are today well when you think about the memory of Jim d'oro at that time with the Ottawa senators. I mean whether it's him whether it's zero leader I mean I mean if you're looking at things. The Ottawa Senators of twenty nine hundred are lacking. It's that level of leadership that level of vision because we all know every right thinking hockey fan sports fan knows that any pro franchise it all basically streams from the top owners should own and then you have a president who all he does is oversee everything making sure sure that this there's fires to put out those fires are put out that he hires the right G._M.. Who Hires the right people beneath him who who make the right hockey scouting decisions? Have you ever seen a team more in need of Jim d'oro or a Sierra leader than this club right now no and we've touched on that a few weeks ago when I got together and talked about that and now does so well said because I mean when Jim dural attached himself to that franchise at that time who among us didn't say wow I mean you just rubber robber stand the Ottawa excellence on this great hands great hands. We love the guy and frankly to be honest. <hes> Bernie stepped into his place and did an outstanding job as well theory and you you you had syrah leader Randy Saxon Bruce firestone you every to me every press conference. They gave every word everything they did. Forget I owned a bar and auto at the time I was part owner of a bar called the original six. They came into my place. Not Not employees of there's Cyril leader came in to the original six and asked me to put a deposit down as a season ticket holder. I think I was like number forty six or something at that time I said I'm in I'm in I mean it wasn't him zero and we're great friends today and I love that because I love that guy he's phenomenal. Those guys exuded respect you know they exuded class and like you said you just hit the nail on the head Jim Daryl you kidding me. He could conceivably be. Maybe the greatest mayor we've ever had with all due respect to Jimmy and always doing great and going to get L. R._T.. In come hell or high water one day but one day his legacy and he's going to get US air and don't worry Jimmy will pay for it but it's the end of the day Jim Dural at that time and the Ottawa senators infrastructure at that time is a fledgling new organization just trying to get off the ground with all the legacy from a million years ago where in which nobody could remember except for grandparents and here they were. I think they came in with the greatest strongest infrastructure that you possibly could in terms of how they at least laid the groundwork initially you get into the Co Gene G._M.. Mel Bridgman edge men. Whatever fact is they laid the groundwork? They went to Florida and they got to team. It wasn't anybody else it was them so we can't be revisionists and look back negatively on anything else had happened from eighty nine through ninety eight through ninety. Whatever it was a Tom Brown arena eighty-seven I guess it was when they sat there and had beers as that story as well documented and good on them for it or let's take our first time out on the program? Of course I.

"On ESPN one dollars. Hopefully, it brings a new energy. I don't know. We'll see Joel Quenneville has been relieved of his coaching duties. Probably won't be out of work long. Maybe he takes the year. Maybe somebody fires a coach just to hire him. Now. Who knows we were just running down the list for you? Yeah. I know more about hockey than we we keep talking about Saint Louis because he started there and Mike ios on the hot seat somebody who's in the know for shirt texted me, though, you're can said he's not going to go to Saint Louis their windows close to where I'm Quenneville man and Edmonton opens up. Yeah. That's where I'm going out coach the best player on the planet, and they're trying to figure things out there. They don't know. What's gone wrong? Two years ago. They made the playoffs. Yeah. The plants last year. Fringe team right now. I think too. I don't know what they're deal is for them. That'd be a breath of fresh air. Yeah. And let's face it. When you listen to anybody talk to you for ten eleven twelve years, some point you're like, oh there he goes against him the same crap we hear all the time tribes you a little bit. You know, the players drives, it drives a coach nuts. I'm tired of saying the same thing over and over and over twelve years, right? What happens is you get that group of guys that you're initially started with you instill your way with them. Right. Well, you got to remember get new players every single year. So you've got to go back and reinstall re-instill that with those individuals that are coming in. And sometimes you're hoping that your players do that for you that way, you don't have to sit and go over the very basics beginning in the get go, and maybe over the course of time that erodes the very way that you wanted to playing hockey she's the theory, by the way. Yeah. Well, you you, you know, what the dynamic is like in a prologue room. I mean. Bill Walsh talked about thirty years ago. The ten year rule that they did voice does need to change. The voice does get all respond differently. You know, our Emily Kaplan tweeted, I just want to read this with tapes had to say quote, definite shock. I didn't think there was going to be a change for a while. A close quality expected a change. Emily went on to say has nothing but praise for q the captain says quote at the end of the day, everyone has to commit to the new look in the new energy in the room. Indian Danny Savard back. You got to commit to the got to commit to the end. Yeah. That's why we're back to commit into the Indian. And I think Adam versus going to let me know when I ready. Come on. I wanna talk savvy today, Danny? Be interesting to talk to savvy. Yeah. He knows what he's been there. It's been clipped at the back of the knees after four games. This was a little bit more. But not. Fifteen team games gave savvy four games before they clipped him in the back of the you know, they got off to such a promising start. That's exactly what Quinn vol needed. But this last week is not very good. They got who's who's the guy that cheap shattered Hosa Torres Raffi Torres Torres guys. Guys, got Raffi Torres. Terry's at Saint shock on ESPN thousand eight tearing. Hey, what's going on? As we're thinking about talking about it. Making such a good moves anymore. Remember, what stands I got that job? It was scouting still arthritis at all the modes, and he was the one that was orchestrating all the moves. Now. Of course, he don't take over. And Scotty is still a senior adviser. I think with the hawks years. I mean, these are stands move. So that Scotty boneless boats and shells. Then maybe you should go back and consult with the old man a little bit more. How much input the Scotty still had enough the ice from the press box for calling Terry cap said he's heard from some sources that Scotty is gonna be very much involved in coaching. Now, even though he's going to be in Florida or up in the press box. I mean, berry Smith is back. Remember, this all kind of started when they thrust berry Smith upon Joel Quenneville and twenty you never liked that. There's only one guy I know from the Blackhawks hockey from back in the day that would agree with the move. That was. Can we talk to Pulford Pulford right now? What's your pom furry old man on what happened today with Joel clutter, y'all move fire Q win too much? I told the old man don't win Stanley corporate cost too much money too much money. Polly they've been following what your advice is bid, and they have at one in three years and yet they fired him. Anyway. What's going on ABBIE? Fire. Rocky word somebody please Iragi is the problem. I come back and coach now I will be on bench while we appreciate all your thoughts. Bob. Thank you, Paul. Paulie was here running things over and over and over again, how many chances to one guy the worst advice ever coming out of out of a room could have been Bob Pulford candidate audit. It's not that bad now. But it's great that paulie come back and give his thoughts on what. Yeah. I think. So. Too stubborn to die. Sometimes. Too stubborn to die. We're going to talk to I don't know if we're going to get a chance to talk to. Bursch was like doing a charity thing. So he was gonna try to squeeze anytime Nandita, but he was at a veterans hospital. He's he's leaving there. Now, he's gonna text when he gets a little tighter. Maybe during the one o'clock hour, we'll try to sneak in Burr if not maybe we'll catch up with him in the next couple of days. I know sharpies finding New York is going to be doing national stuff tonight. How about John is first night on national TV sharp looking suit on the other day sharpies Sharaf print. He was wearing it was a little bit different. I don't know. But he's sewing good looking. I mean, you know, we can admit that he's a handsome guy. He's going to be all right on TV. So he's going to do national stuff tonight. He'll try to join us later in the week. He told Danny to but he was getting on a plane flying to New York this morning this afternoon. So maybe we'll catch up with boorish during the one o'clock hour, Pat boy will join us at one thirty after he gets outta the locker room at three o'clock. The hawks have called a press conference to talk about. Live. We'll carry alive Waddle and Silvy will bring you that live a couple of hours from now. So we'll talk to Jesse coming up next. He's out in California at the GM meetings. The hot stove already kicking baby already churning. My White Sox could be in on Machado could be on an Harper one the other maybe both who knows I think the White Sox are going to try to be active member was the signing of John Lester. That really jump started things in progress. Pell propelled the cubs rebuild forward in two thousand fifteen crash bandicoot when used to play the game crash bandicoot you ever remember that on the track and you your little bugging hit the salary. That's what accelerated the cubs winning could this season be similar for the White Sox. If they'll go out and get a Machado or Harper. And you know, how how active are they going to be a how hard are they going to pursue both? I it sounds like they want Manny Machado, and you you could dog him all you want or he's a dog. He's this look at the way played in the plus sign me up for Manny Machado. If I'm wrong on that one you'll be hassle. But I don't know why I don't think I'd be happy to be wrong. But Manny Machado is one of the games. Great players signed me up for that Bryce Harper to if I had to pick between the two I think I'd take our. Oh, I think both for sure and you could take both car. All right. Three one two three three two three seven seven six. That's the.

Go into a banquet room at the bowling alley to cast their ballots bowling by the way, runs from eleven AM to eleven PM. I'm Brian burrow with community corners on WGN radio. Now, WGN sports. Here's dave. And we have some some breaking sports from the Chicago Blackhawks this morning. And apparently the word we're getting is that the hawks are making a change in the head coaching position joke. Joel Quenneville is no longer the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks we've just gotten that word. And then there's still statement from the team is coming as to why. Or what happened regardless of this start, obviously, it doesn't seem to be related to this. So we don't know we don't know anything other than that. But we do know that the is no longer to cut to the Blackhawks and as far as the rest of the coaching staff were trying to piece this together right now. They're gonna apparently platoon coach for a period of time. Kevin dineen. And there are a couple of other names that you'll know, but I don't have enough that my head. But Kevin dean will share in the no he was also like was like go. Yeah. Oh, I thought Kevin Dineen was part of this. Okay. So again, this is just right now developing, but again, Joel Quenneville out as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, and we there's no coach waiting there's nobody that's the red. They're ready to announce today. And we don't know what happened or why this happened. But obviously, it's big news. Yeah. I obviously when a team is struggling in the Blackhawks after missing the playoffs last year. And I don't wanna be the what you say the name of the head coach of the new head coach, Jeremy Colloton, okay is. But that's inter-, right. The new head coach. I I don't know the word. Interim wasn't us there. Okay. So we are again this. This is. Samuel center also out that was my mistake. So so the coaching staff, we do we know about well, let's let's put the pieces together because this literally just happening right now. But again, Joel Quenneville out is coach of the Blackhawks, and we will continue to update the story and keep you posted on it as we get the development. Let me call me a Homer if you will. But let me just say this. This organization was rebuilt a ten plus years ago by making a lot of tough decisions in the right decisions at the right time. And this appears to be completely out of nowhere. I'm sure there's some sort of logical explanation to it that will here here is the official statement from the Blackhawks they have relieved Joel Quenneville of his coaching duties they've named Jeremy Colloton the head coach thirtieth head coach in franchise history. They've named berry Smith and assistant coach they've also parted ways with assistant coaches cabinet. Gene. And all Samuelson the rest of the coaching staff. And this is what I was wondering about for instance. Jimmy, wait, the goaltending. Coach apparently the rest of the coaching staff will remain with the team. Jeremy Colloton just thirty three years old. He's been coaching the Rockford ice hogs. The Blackhawks talked to him. Remember? This is why I use the word interim. But interim wasn't used by that interim is not used in the release. Okay. So again, this is the official statement Joel Quenneville the second winningest head coach in Blackhawks history and the second winningest coach in National Hockey League history. As a matter of fact and leaves with three Stanley Cup championships one with the Blackhawks. And so now the second largest number of wins in NHL hits behind Scotty Bowman. Yep. Here is a statement from rocky Wirtz. The Blackhawks front office has made a decision released Joel Quenneville doing so with my full support is Blackhawks fans of seen over the last decade this organization, no longer shies. Wait for making tough decisions are ones based on a motion. Those days are long behind us. Of course, Joel's was difficult as it should have been during his tenure as head coach. He brought the city and our fans three Stanley Cups at an incredible era of hot. Hockey Blackhawks presidency. Yo John McDonough, quote, this was an extremely difficult decision. Given our respect for Joel. And all that he has brought to the Blackhawks the last ten years his leadership during three Stanley Cup championships speaks for itself. And there's no way to adequately express what he's met to the organization. Stan Bowman issued a statement saying this is certainly a very difficult decision. But I believe it's in the best interest of the Blackhawks organization, so. Again, we can guess all day, and that's kind of what we'd we'd have to do around here. But if you go back ten years ago. Danny Savard was not having a lot of success as a coach of the Blackhawks, and they made a tough decision shortly after rocky took over the team and McDonough came over to replace him with Joel Quenneville that obviously worked out pretty well. I'm only speculating here. I have no knowledge of this. But I know how close coach q felt to his coaches. It is coaching staff, and it's not completely out of pocket to think maybe the organization came to Q and said these guys have to go, and he took a stand and said that I'm going to. That's just a one one option, you're speculating here. Why that's that's that's common sense speculation. I don't have any knowledge of that other than that. Because in a world of why would queue be gone? I can't think of any other reason right now, I think if you if you look at the statements that have been issued by rocky Wirtz, and John McDonough, I mean, let's face it. It's a results business and the Blackhawks got got swept in the playoffs. Two years ago missed the playoffs last year, and they're trending down this year based on this just the way it's gone. The apper good started things have not been going well lately, and and the the LA kings fired their coach over the weekend. I think he was in his second year, and they've had a along with the Blackhawks they've had a pretty good run of success. So this is Q. This is differ. I get it. Oh, I totally get it. So he's an easy a guy who's who's adored by hawks fans and Welby. Yeah. There's no question. And if he wants to work, he'll he'll work against certainly. Best to coach q too because deneen Samuelson as well. Because you know, obviously, we're close to coach and it when we get answers. We'll tell you what they are. But right now, that's all we know. And we'll continue to follow the story. That's it for now. I'm David WGN sports. Hi. I'm.
