"In Freddie on KNBR six eighty these sports leader we'll get into our verbally under yes man for it in just a minute but joining us on the my gas line is the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks Lloyd Pierce joins us good friend of Franny and of course the war years just made a deal with the hawks bringing bringing Amari Spelman to Golden State or Damian Jones and a twenty twenty six second round pick and Lloyd is with us say Lloyd how are you good idea though L. T. your way we too awake right now to be in Vegas seriously it's very good to flee from either for the the earthquake here for both earthquake that my model staff they become crazy because I just sat there and I was like well you have everyone outside of California thinks earthquakes are the most devastating thing in the last fifteen seconds and I'll know we you are you are you guys hello momentum going Travis Schlenk Danny Martinez lot of a lot of for all your people out in Atlanta doing their thing and and the the trade came down you know first of all the summer league is just exploded it's amazing the growth of the of summer league I was watching lawyers Lakers last night on the two but it's it's amazing how many people are into it but the deal came down yesterday and the the war years can't Amari Spelman and you guys get Damien Jones give his Sir give a full breakdown on this deal from your perspective you know for us it's it's you know we're we're still getting another young guy we just acquired Jabbar Parker has a backup for which created a little bit of a log jam for Mari and we needed some depth at the five spot which gives us an opportunity to go get someone like Damien who you know still young just finished a thirty year most of our guys are in their second and third year so he fits our time line well but you know we have a dynamic point guard is really good and take a role we show Damien's gonna have an opportunity to grow in his career playing with Terry playing with some of our guys and and and and given this opportunity that the ram which is his strength when you go from you know coach in college Santa Clara then you go into is like just the scouting world and and working with the warriors and and all these other guys to see where these college players are coming out now and how you know how far in advance they are like a tree young are are you are you surprised to see the growth from the for the first time you came in early to now I think it's different how many do you can start with the high school guys now you know so many players that are in high school right now that are just ridiculously advanced in their skill set I think that the biggest growth there's still a little bit of a let down in terms of their understanding of how to play the game understanding of the winning basketball the nuances of it but the individual talent the lack the size the lane the bill used to the boiling add stats improve tremendously for for the young guys Hey Willie tell us a little bit about Spelman model your fans obviously you're eager to see what he can do for Golden State we someone a national championship at Villanova and Eric paschal played with them there but if you give us your thoughts on him you know they actually some similarities within America asco you know two guys out of Villanova that bring toughness in intensity Dow they play G. right as an unbelievable job at battling over to get those guys to play that way Amari shot forty three percent are coming out of college and and shot a good number you know you do he didn't finish the year because of injury but I think he was in the thirty six thirty seven percent range from three so you get a big can step out behind the three point line and knock down some three you got a big they're going to get some office three rounds he plays with a lot of emotion in a lot of intensity connect four years in the second year he still has to improve upon those things we'll figure out you know how to adjust and play with the rest of the NBA but you definitely have the skill set that's going to be unique you know the the one thing that you said earlier about like just the young guys and coming up in it and it goes with the Mari Spelman Eric Pascal is that coming from winning programs in and they know how to win right the dream on green came out of Michigan state he was in the final four every year he knew how to win how it like when you got the on three hundred you got the rights to him this year how important was that he played for number one team a national championship team obviously talent takes over everything but plane for a title contender every year in college is that important in the growth in the NBA for you and for us as were built in our roster and we're and we're doing it organically to the draft we're gonna require talent and I think that that that's the beauty of its very young of the talents are calling to the tower cameras to the talent the underrated talent you also want to acquire some other things as well guys that have a defense of background you know down with ACC defensive player of the year you want to acquire some guys that know what will being feels like Andy Andrea hunter one the the national championship so it's one thing to have a bunch of guys that can score in someone's got to defend some of a rebound someone's got to make the extra pass someone understand the opponents that and so I think we have a little bit of that with the Andre who comes from a winning programs one an actual championship who is a deep it's a player year which shows a lot about it mentality in its approach to the game yeah I think some golden state's perspective they love the fact that they get three years a control with with Amari Spelman so they get three years to kinda get him role in and they also get a guy who can space the floor and shoot the three mention forty three percent shooting the three ball that final year at at Villanova but one of his issues is just gonna be like many of us you know keeping his weight in in shack I suppose we got up into the mid to nineties that this is a guy who's a tremendous basketball player and has a lot of fire but he's got to be committed to the fitness part of it in keeping that way down how much of a challenge do you think that's going to be for him I think anytime you're dealing with a young player it's not even what the issue is this the discipline in the routine of knowing the rigors of an NBA season we played a two game play five preseason games and you know you guys are used to being impulse even for a couple months after so you can get into the triple digits in terms of games played you're gonna have a lot of issues whether it's injury whether it's weight whether it's eating whether it's sleeping for a young player they have to understand those things are coming regardless and how you handle it is always a challenge and so I think the beauty of it is the Mars gone through a year where he was hurt and now we trying to keep himself in shape he's trying to get himself back in say coming off of an injury and it's not easy and so because you've already done it I think he now is aware of how serious that can be and how difficult it can be if you're not doing the right thing you're not in the training room after the game you're not you know making sure you're getting rest at night and so it's going to be a challenge I just think well hopefully this year was beneficial to him to realize that things are gonna happen now what what's your approach to to make sure that you you're avoiding situations as often as you can was a big for you the fact that like Omari went through all that stuff and you know being injured being a bigger guy obviously not the talent but you have any experience with your own bead in Philadelphia seen him through his injury and how he had to prep himself to be able to stay on the court was that it factor in you know in being able to talk to him in a and get the message across to own well you know there's a lot of guys that reach out and want to offer advice you know when you have young guys and and and I think so well situation with the same in Asia to injury the new deal with a guy that's growing he's constantly getting bigger and stronger but yet he's affected been dominant and on the court he's still going to use all the playoffs with yeah well and and and just trying to stay on the court in trying to be active for every game and be a hundred percent it's not a one year deal with the rest of your career how do you manage this that this is what separates the elite players from just the average guy these guys that that you see consistently producing insulin up they take care of her body they take care of their approach to the game and and and they have a routine that that works we're trying to Lloyd peers head coach the Atlanta Elena hawks on the Yuma gas line in joining us from Las Vegas the side of the NBA summer league which is probably the most popular new was sporting event going right now you don't not seen as the City College some really get that yeah it's little bit bigger deal better not their role to solve the issue because I I was talking about that's what I grew up on what I'm talking about there are every year do you know it's funny we just saw one of the most dramatic off seasons in the history of American sports sway with what we saw in the NBA in the last couple weeks about a third of the T. of the players forty percent yeah we profanity and mia and free agency assistant change teams including like ten of the top twenty players in the league and a mouse talking to somebody yesterday was tight in the league and said you know what there's going to be about ten to twelve teams that show up in training camp with real belief that they can win the NBA finals and that for this guy's perspective he thinks it's a it's a huge positive what do you think I know a lot of the young people will love the movement of the player move or.

"So those, those two were the bulk of that, and then also there was a senior housing complex near green Greenwood James Briggs Ryan Martin the Indy star in studio with us. So let's get them the nitty gritty here. The million dollar question. What's the biggest thing we take away from this article here? Is that, that mayor Joe's follow crap? Is that the numbers have been doctored here? What's the big takeaway, I think, what I reporting would show and based on the people we talked to is that in many ways that this initiative is isn't really a coherent plan to address delapidated housing. Instead, it's a collection of agencies. Al- putting data together, and then it'd been pitched as a political solution to something. But the people we talked to would say that, while the city's done good work at a bunch of different ways. It isn't really necessarily all focused on dilapidated or blasted housing and certainly not on crime and James, take me through how mayor Ballard would have handled the same situation because I'm Suming that you guys in your investigation to pair to what's going on now to with the Ballard administration previously in other issue, one of our challenges. We wanted to one way, we wanted to measure the progress made under Hogshead is to look back to the Ballard years. But according to the hog said administration, they didn't have apples to apples numbers from the Ballard years. One thing we know that mayor Ballard did is he, he sought to demolish, a lot of houses, and that actually went badly for him in the sense that people started getting angry, so not everyone likes the idea of demolishing houses, even though that's a fairly proven way to successfully. Deal with Blige to get rid of the houses. As he attempted that some people objected, and they kind of pulled back from that during his administration. And so it's a little difficult to compare the work during the Ballard years to the hog set years, did you reject a hug set? Yeah, we interviewed him for the story. So, yeah, we talked to him about this. What's he say? I think the most interesting takeaway, for us was that he sort of walked back from the idea that this was intended as a solution to crime. That was how it was pitched when he first rolled this out in the two thousand seventeen state of the city address when we asked him about that. He said this wasn't necessarily an effort to come back crime, and that was that was something to surprise us. Because we understood it as an initiative that wasn't ended for that purpose. And Ryan take me through some of the conversations. You've had with some people who live in areas where. Either the mayor has not knocked down these houses or areas where he's claiming victory. And I'm sure you had a chance to speak with some of those people. Yeah. When neighborhood we went to just north of tenth in rural and the Brookside area. We talked to a gentleman Danny Martinez who lives there. And, you know, one of the reasons we were in that area is because we found a bunch of homes that were in that area. Counted as transformed on on the mayor's office is list. And what Danny told us was he was he lives just a few blocks away from Brookside park. But he and his niece who's eleven years old. They don't even walk to the park because they're afraid living in that area. So instead, they drive and what's interesting to us on top of that is a home across the street, that's on the list as being transformed. But it's still sitting vacant trying to get a free tweeted this story at hammer and Nigel. Here's a line from the story that James Briggs Ryan Martin, put out.

"Energy or to know that we can do more than sort of resist right now. That's what messes that we want. This film to get people is that you can use every little bit of it. I think by the end of the infiltration close to Markel is about to get out. We were to the point where we will tell people that would call go to room three. Oh, six pick up a blink privacy waiver give it to room two five and they'll deliver it to us. Like yet. It's easy. Who were you able to get out you and Marco did you actually able to free people? Oh, yeah. I mean, this was after we got kicked out of of Broward, we stayed around for six months. We didn't I didn't live in Florida prior to this. I mean, this I went there specifically for this project. So we continue to working for like six months on getting people released the Alex if you could talk about where geo fits in and where does ice fit in? How does this work? We're talking about government, and we're talking about private companies. Sure in the film sort of simplify. So you really see a lot of you see a lot of the geo corporation in the film the geo corporation owns the facility runs it. They administer labor program which has been the subject of a recent lawsuit because they pay the detainees a dollar a day and the real way that they kind of compelled detainees to work to clean, the floors to wash the uniforms to cook the food to run the entire facility for a wage of a dollar a day the way they compel that labor is through withholding visitation rights. So if you refuse to work, you get to see your family your loved ones once every two weeks, but if you participate in this basically forced labour program, then you get to see your loved ones once a week. And I remember when Marco emerged from the detention center that was the first thing he was talking about. I think he sort of learned that inside I learned it from him. And it was shocking today is the subject of a lawsuit. Infiltrators co director, Alex Rivera and immigrant rights activists. Vide- Danny Martinez and Muhammad after Laffy the infiltrators will be screened at the Miami film festival on Tuesday. And. Man, crazy got his career is just taking the next party. I will be the next car to be jail Cardi. Version of Cardi B. He's got the personality. Brought him in here. Very early on. You got to catch up on the show interview sat down with them. And he gave us a lot of a lot of hundred gave us a lot of exclusive scusi such a new artist. He didn't really know what he was doing. Your face you reported this a few minutes ago soldier boy, China, basically got together to troll tiger. And then they accidentally fell in love. Yes. Like to happen. And then they ended up by man. Hey, Patty dog that's taking petty pettiness your own. It is have you ever been petty like that in a relationship? Now. I tried. I tried getting with one of my ex's friends to show her that they not really her friends, and they showed me that they're really her friends because they got so quick. I can't do that to her. You know what I'm saying? He got curved all good. At least I gave it a shot. I tried to be petty. Did not work out in my faith. No, I feel bad. No, you never had. Relationship. Someone was that way to me, it was a bad break up break up, and they called my work and said you want to know why he hasn't been here. The last couple of days because we've been fighting like. All the way back in middle school. I got played like that. Yeah. We broke up and then a week later. She called me and told me she was cheating on me with dude that I hated. "They do that with Nickelback. And I've heard people talk about Pearl Jam. Have you? And I don't know why. I mean, I guess I haven't listened to him enough to hate them. Maybe it's music that doesn't wear. Well, maybe it's inch music that was kinda good. But it got there's something about music that gets overplayed, we all have that time in our lives. Where there was a song that was popular. And then the first time beyond. But you know, you hear it four hundred sixty one times on the four hundred sixty seconds, you go I never want to hear that song again in by four eighty-five. You've lost your mind. It might be ten years later, but you've lost your mind. Caller. Hello. This is my daughter. I'm from New Orleans, you tell me you're from New Orleans every time, and you don't have to tell me because I already know. Oh, you do. Okay. But I love the way you say New Orleans. I'm sorry. Say it again. Do all you do, you know, my friend, EDI MARTINI? No. You know, my daughter says hold on. I'm gonna tell you story. This is the weirdest thing. He tells me he's a big deal in New Orleans. And then I find out he's actually for many. Oh my goodness. I know I know, but I'm okay, I'm I'm gonna let that let that slide. But he tells me he's a big deal archbishop Romo into LSU. I have been asking around for fifteen years. I've yet to find anybody that knows him really. Now, his brother's estate Senator people go. Yeah. Eddie, Martine, eighty MARTINI. No. I don't know any Martine now. I know a, Danny MARTINI. That's his brother, Danny Martinez. So good. All right. You got it. But never EDI MARTINI ever. We'll I call focus. My daughter heard something on I don't know what it is Facebook, or whatever that stuff is that the mayor of Atlanta says she did not want the saints coming there to play in the Pro Bowl. It was played at the Superdome before the game. Did you hear that? Yeah. They played it. And then the fans went nuts. I didn't hear it. I must've missed it. You know? I don't go to Texans games. My CPA has tickets, which I guess technically I'm paying for. But the game day experience to me is is maybe I'm just getting old and cranky. Two hours before the game. Takes you two hours to get out. It's hard to get in that stadium is is tough to work with because there's a Kirby's at chokepoint and there's not a good transportation network. Because of the way the way it was built when it was built. And it's just sixteen can't handle it right there. And anyway, whatever. But so I haven't been to many Texans games. I watch them. I enjoy watching them, but I like all the camera angles. And if there's good commentary, if there's bad commentary than comment on commentary, but I say that say this Lynn. I've never been in a stadium ever in my life in any sport. Where the stadium. The strategy behind how they use the stadium Cam TV's so motivated the people, and I don't know if they do this every week or they did it because it was a championship game Lynn every game. But before the game started they and throughout the game. They played that clip of the Atlanta mayor she didn't say we don't want the saints here. What what they did is they ask different people who they wanted to win. And mayor of Atlanta said. Anybody but the saints. I mean, nobody wants to win and assassinated. Nobody. Nuts. There are archrivals because the saints off. Gotten a better of them. Yep. Actually won a Super Bowl. I was so upset at that last play. And you know, they officials upstairs watching everything that's going on they could've stopped that. Right there. They could have a pass interference call is not reviewable. Now. They don't have to review it. They saw it. They did see it. But they can't just see things in overrule it right there on the spot limb. There are things that are review -able and things that aren't the league Commissioner Roger Goodell has the authority after the fact to overturn a game. But to my knowledge that's unprecedented. And as awful as the call was and it was awful. There's no way around it. I think it would it would be it was set a bad precedent. And I think it would leave people. Everybody other than some die hard saints fans. I think it would leave everybody with an odd feeling if you flipped the result of the game because you can't be sure the saints would have won. Look, I wish the saints at one I do, and they did in my mind they did win and they got it ripped away. But you know, this lawsuit that they're bringing in all that. It's I mean, it's entertaining. Just don't ever confuse it for anything other than entertaining remote Linden. Let.

"And then I'll go to New York, and then I'll come to LA that was the whole plan and strategy doesn't mean I wasn't popping in and out of LA all the time. But I I love Joey more. You gotta do this. I was like y'all pick you up and go to the airport not knowing that he was having a fucking ball. And I was going to be driving around at six AM trying to find trying to get a hold of like, I quit, you know, young motivated Kim's trying to pick him up. So I love that that era, and I've always have like a love hate relationship. With who Babbitt is, you know, he did a lot for that club to bring in all the top guys. I mean, my God Mitch Hedberg, you know, did his album there. Joe Rogan, I think did his first album. My did you did for? I mean, my God it was like that room. Right. So but at the same time he fucking ruin that place. Like, unfortunately, you know, it ruined. And then Pete took over and then that whole happened. And then they moved the club. And it was just like lost this nostalgia Pete. Every time. I go to Houston. Yeah. It comes out. He brings a big group to yet at. To the point where like have Twitter. People are talking about. Pizzas. Pete was a beat was a great guy from. Yeah. He really was. He that club is established. Yeah. Brought me down 'cause Dane canceled at the last minute, right? And they were like this guy's like Dame and Pete's like I'll take him. Yes. Fun. That's why has sold out shows that weekend 'cause Dane was supposed to be there. And he was like funny. I just had a kid. I think and he was like once you come down thanksgiving. I'll pay you I'll pay three grant, which is a lot. I mean, it's a lot. Now is a lot to me. Me put me in. He said bring your daughter bring a wife and put me up at a really nice like sweet and Tell L. us about one bus. Thanksgiving's I've ever had in my life. Look man, I at the same like for Mark the way he ran that club was like almost he was trying to do it with the with the store was doing, you know, hang out at the club or else. You don't go up. And that's the way it's going to be. I'm like, what are you talking about? You know, like I'm trying to be a good comedian here. I'm trying to be great. I'm going on the road. I'm doing one nighters. You can't fuck and punish me for working on the road. And when I come back, I'm present. You can't be like where were you last Monday? And that's what he would do to me. I mean, I was like seventeen eighteen nineteen year old kid. I'm like, bro. I I don't understand. So I went to the comedy showcase. And that was like where ralphie may was mentored by Danny Martinez. Who's my mentor as well? And and and and that's why learned standup was from Danny why everybody was just trying to hang out at the laugh, stop and get his attention. So they can get stage time I was getting stage time, and I was getting better than when pizza Culver. He was very kind to me and brought me in right away. He's like weisensee guy working fucking room. No brainer. And he would bring me on all the time. And actually, I had a similar story. What's his name? Cancel doesn't. Do. I don't do. Fucking second show Friday. Oh, my God come on smoke, cigarettes, dice dice dice dice que. He's I don't do. No seconds show Fridays. So Pete calls me. Hey, man dies. Doesn't wanna do. Second ranking come headline room. It was like my first experience headlining the room. And I walked in there. Like ISIS up there. Don't fucking don't go up. He's up there hanging out. And I was like whatever it's my room. Now, I'm gonna go say Hello. I loved ice to use this opportunity tummy. I can't go up. I went up. There was making a sandwich doing that..
