"Of the year candidate at super brawl in Milwaukee, and I think you could take a look at that in early 92, as we said, super brawl two was February in Milwaukee. That feels like I'm not going to say it's the precursor for the cruiser weight division, but it feels like it's ushering in a new style. What we have seen by and large have been these big, thick lumbering men. Uh, you know, on the other channel, we're seeing guys like one man gang and King Kong Bundy and whole Kogan and Andre the giant and here and something totally different and you can say certainly that tiger mask and dynamite kid were doing it before. But this is happening on us television and, and, and in a big way on a pay per view, and when people start talking about this is the best match on the card, that's great for Brian Pilman. No, absolutely. Yeah. He got the boy, he got in the game. He got, he got in the game. It was a meaningful game, not one that's out of reach. He got, he got in the game when the game was still undecided and he, and he carried the ball and he did great. I mean, he just was, uh, he took advantage of every opportunity. It's like a football player finally getting a chance to get on the field. He got on the field, he got in the game and he took advantage of it. And that's what Morse talents need to realize today. It's like this weekend, you know, in Vegas, uh, those, I hope those kids realize what an opportunity they have, uh, to raise their game and the perception of their game and these big high profile pay per views like the AEW produces and will produce again on Sunday. It's a, it's also a match that's going to catch the attention of Kip Fry. And that's what really matters on the heels of this super brawl opportunity with Jewish and Liger. It gets a $225 ,000 contract over the next three years. And that deal at the time was considered big money. Let's remember this is a company that is losing money every single year. They've yet to turn a profit. So they're trying to cut costs and mitigate costs for the can and, and, and, those dollars and cents. And now here's a guy who doesn't look like Hulk Hogan or Lex Luger. And we're giving him, I mean, now listen to 25 is good money today. Two 25, 30 years ago, an incredible deal for Brian Filman here. Yeah. Were you wanting to keep him happy? Keep him there and see through your commitment that the company was making to Brian at the $225 ,000 mark. Uh, look, he'd earned it. Uh, we wanted him to say it was just a time to fit into the marketplace of the right number. We found the number that he'd like and, uh, assess what we signed into it. Kip probably was very, uh, ingenious in some areas, more on the business side of doing contracts, things like that. Then he was about, uh, you know, booking an angle or booking a match or something. That was just not his forte, but he was very good at motivating talents. Uh, be honest with you. Uh, and what most, what motivates talents gone red, catch and create. So Brian got, he got the cash that he was looking for, and he was getting creative opportunities that he had been waiting on his entire life. And I wish I had a record scratch sound effect because then Bill Watts comes on board and it's been said that he was in charge of trying to, we got a right side of the books, boys and girls. We got to run a P and L we got to get rid of this red ink. We got to find the black ink. And unfortunately, this brand new contract that Brian Pillman had for $225 ,000. A lot of people feel felt like that became a bullseye and you're really tight with the cowboy. I know you think a lot of Brian, what do you remember of this? Because it's been said that, uh, well, let me just say, or read you what Dave wrote after a short period of being jobbed in the open or nearly every night, despite being amongst the hottest workers at the time, but lots of internal pressure on him to cave into Watts. He stood firm, claiming he was going to become the highest paid jobber and opening match pro wrestling history. Until the situation of his job being in the reasons for it became an embarrassment for the company and both sides settled their problems in a solution that was largely face saving for both sides in the wake of all the problems Watts decided to drop the light heavyweight division. So just to recap, we have a match of the year candidate that everybody loves. We decide we're going to spend more time on this. We created a largely this division for these two guys. We signed this talent who are really big contract. There's a change of leadership. And as this happens a lot in sports, when the new ball coach comes in, he wants his people, he wants to pick his groceries and also to we're hemorrhaging cash. And that's Watts. His priority is we got to write the ship. We need to be a profitable business. Brian Filman was not willing to let that money go. And this has become a famous story. I'll be the highest paid jobber in history. What do you remember of this? Oh yeah. He talked about that. He, he was, he was trying to protect his money and, uh, he was out of the number that he liked, you know, you know, Brian had a lot of obligations. Married bad marriage, get several kids. You know, he, he just had a, he had a, he had a hell of an agenda, personal agenda that he had to maintain and take care of. So I was never against Brian. I was always against the junior. Every week, like there's never been a great junior. Every week since Danny Hodge got out. Hodge was the best because he was an Olympian free time national champion. He never lost college. Every bit of publicity that you want as a PR guy, how it's provided. But there was no way to follow that act. And so making a, having a junior heavyweight title or a producer weight title. I hated all those things. I hated all those because it brought you down a notch, I think. Uh, and I, I remember talking to Bill about that a lot. It's just not going to work. These odds are over. And, uh, people want to see athleticism. They want to see movement. Uh, they want to see explosiveness and Brian had all those things. Cowboy was just living in the past, but less as hard, uh, that, you know, he probably had never paid anybody. He couldn't junkyard dog, a guaranteed $225 ,000 in Cowboy's career. So he was, uh, but he was serving those two. He was serving his own conscious. He thought it was the kids, you know, paid, but you know, the point is, let it

"Only goes four minutes and 48 seconds stratus. Winds up with a bloody lip when it's all done, but it takes a DDT and that's it for Jacqueline, gets a star in three quarters. Kind of the death spot for the ladies between the two big title matches, but that's where we were at the time. And the main event is here. Rock Lesnar's the man, fresh off of WrestleMania, he is got the big belt, and he's got an even bigger opponent in the big show. It's a stretcher match for the SmackDown title. It gets three and a quarter stars. They do lots of Gaga here, though, because Lesnar's gonna come out with a forklift. Somewhere in all of this, Rey Mysterio does a magic act and disappears. There's a vertical suplex. And it gets a huge pop, as you might imagine. And then an F 5, and then Lesnar rolls him onto the forklift and carries him to the back. A forklift for big show. It's fun. It's silly. I like it though. Yeah, it kind of was to let me, I want to let me up main event. It is. I mean, they didn't have double juice and all kinds of violence. Creatively laid out, I assume that Patterson had something to do with that. Because it was very well done. Even in a unique landscape that connected the dots. So I liked it. And back on the ladies match, that match represented everything I wanted to kill. And WWE in charge of booking and talent relations, et cetera. It's not where I wanted to go. I wanted to give that brand that gender respect. And I believe that highly skilled, highly motivated, attractive females, athletic females, were an asset. To give them a thank you for coming a cup of coffee in four minutes. 8 my idea of doing that. And he said, well, what would you do? Well, hey, I will give more time. Let's first thing. I give more time. I don't know that there's a lot you can do, Conrad, about putting the match in another spot. It kind of ended up being born in for this. Book for this. So I don't know. I just find that because it works so hard and they made the house shows. Go back and look at some reports about the house show house show performances were the ladies. Very, very rarely. Was there ever any disappointment? Even from the cynical agents. Yes. Who didn't like the broads on the car? So, you know, we've got those battles all the time. From guys, July, and you have a lot of respect for, but you know, fellas, we got to move away from this broad shit. All those different broads are going to be addressing for them in the Fox shut up. Yeah, they need a dressing room. They need a shower. They did a toilets at works. God, I'm sorry, I've peppering them. So, yeah, I wanted that there was money there. And that theory Conrad has been proven out. Yes. Hence, Charlotte's success, her earnings, and so forth. All those women are starved, became stars, Becky, is one of our girls. And so, you know, I think that the pissed me off, and they deserve better. And I'll close with that. They do deserve better and you deserve better. You deserve a little BBQ from JR's BBQ dot com and you want to talk about the best sauces in the world. I'll brag a bunch here about the all purpose seasoning. But they got the main event mustard, the chipotle ketchup, something for everybody. At least of all the brand new product, red JR hot sauce, come on, man. Something for you. Right now. Yeah. I mean, as I said, I'm in Oklahoma, obviously I'm a little office here. Some quarter of a snapshot of some of my memorabilia, including Danny Hodge, right behind my head, noise, over there. It's a cauliflower out of cove deal. But Mickey Mantle signed Jersey and that John Wayne signed merch, so I'm a mark for some of my heroes. That's why I don't agree with that situation. Never want to meet your hero. Okay, why are you negative bastard? You never want to meet your heroes. They'll disappoint you every time. Just like those broads. Jesus. You live your life this way. Right. Seriously, man. Oh, you're divorced. You're alone. Wait a minute, I described to me. Wait a minute. Hold on. Third acceptance to the rule. Some of us are alone guys are happy. So anyhow, I don't know where I was. Oh, the barbecue.

"But anyway, what were we talking about? I was talking about something. Well, we're talking about how you first get started. And let me finish that. Yeah. And so we went to the president's paternity and myself. He was also a huge wrestling fan, just like me. To the point of being a little bit of an intervention, maybe. We went to Tulsa to meet with mcgurk and watts, to close our deal, and really all it was was just a way for us to get two free tickets to the wrestling matches that night and Monday night in Tulsa. And so the little meeting we had, just about a few guys across the street, et cetera, et cetera, was done after the live event. And cowboy was in the main event that night. I think he wrestled. Maybe Harley. Anyway, the national stop due to too much blood, believe it or not. And they had a good match. I remember that. And we got first or second row seats. It was pretty cool. Then we had our meeting. And then we had that show, and it sold out. It sold out with Hodge on top. Then we had a second show later on. And cowboy headlined that one. And it also sold out. So my little track record, you know, I was two and oh, so to speak, anyway, watch told me that he said, look, I don't know what you're going to do when you get a college. How much you got left? And I said, about a semester. He said, I don't know what you're going to do when you get out of college, but if you are interested, I might have something for you to do. I thought that was the greatest news I've ever heard in my life. I had no idea what it was. I had no idea what I was going to get paid. How that evolved was I was going to become a catch all. I was going to get $125 a week. And what are their little gigs I could pick up on? Like if I went a little spot shows. The kiwanis, if I haul the ring behind my vehicle, I got a little bit more money. So everything I could, all the ad owns, so I could add on, I did. So I could half ass make a living. There weren't a lot of trips to the mall at that time. I was a little bit rough. But I was learning so much. I didn't even realize. Later on, I all came home like a big lightbulb. What year was that, do you think, if you had to guess? 74. Just put that in context, though, a hundred and $25 a week. It would have been $765 today. Yeah. So not a ton of money, you know, maybe you can pay your bills if you're frugal and skirt bob, but you're right, you're going to need to pick up whatever you can and I think what I've learned in my research correct me if I'm wrong, this first show you run. Danny Hodge is on the show. Is this your first time seeing him live in person? He was the main event that night. I don't know you worked with. Maybe Akbar stand our act war, maybe. But whoever the top heels were and Hodge worked with him, of course, Hodgkin over. Those shows like that. Smart yourself. As a rule, you're going to put, I don't go home happy. Right. Simple thing. Psychologically. But yeah, I saw, I saw Hodge, no, I saw down the road in a little town called stillwell. They had a spot show when I was in high school. And I convinced my mother to go take me because I knew the old man would not go. There you go, I was chair. So he ain't going. So my mom went and we got two of her girlfriends. They're not then the pitcher started clearing up a little bit. There are a lot of good-looking guys. And underwear, with good bodies. And so all the ladies had a good time. Window shopping, I guess you'd say. So I saw Hodges work there. He worked all those shows, because he was the draw. Right. And so then when he came to teleport, northeastern state, he still was on top. He wasn't quite as solid on top then. As he was before, because cowboy was in, and cowboy was redoing the roster to where he got some bigger guys in there so he could work with him. You know, Hodge working with a 200 pounder, it's not going to, that's hard pull off. I've always said it about the undertaker. The greatness of the undertaker could be described in the fact that he can make a match with anybody competitive. And here he is a 7 foot baby face. That's tough. It is tough. So anyway, so those two, those two opportunities to promote shows, I mean, I gave, I think what really got me hard, I wish I had a coffee of it. But I think what got me hard was I gave cowboy a post event report, which he hadn't gotten just about the territory. He didn't know what I did. He didn't do it. Because we're a nonprofit organization. All the things that we did by radio spots

"Dot com, trim your chesticles with the vesicles. Jim, let's talk about what happens in 1970. Mister McGregor has enlisted several part owners into the territory. He's going to be working with Fritz von Erich Verne gagne and cowboy Bill watts. What's though has decided he wants a bigger share of the pie. He wrote in his book, quote I gave her in my notice and then called Leroy and told him look. I work out my deal with you when I get there, but I'm coming home to be your partner. started making some calls, look at talent, and when Verne called me on it, I said, yeah, I'm booking talent there. Fuck you, you're out. Vernon Fritz knew a good thing, so they met and agreed to make me a full partner. The next thing I knew, I had 17%. Burn in France each had 20% and Leroy had the remaining 33%. Leroy sold the other 10% to Danny Hodge, still his top star. Man, Bill watts is just the man here. Just calling the shot and saying, this is the way life's going to be. He's a big star. He's got some leverage. That's an important thing to have in wrestling or business, is it not? Yeah, sure is. That whole deal. He wanted to make money, obviously, off the sale of tickets. Because that was 99% of your revenue. Ticket sales to live events. And there were no pay per views, all the normal things you see now and that we take for granted did not exist. So cowboy made that deal, so he had access to talent. So he had all those guys had stars that had name identity. Von erichs, for example, duh. Fritz, our didn't have as many at that time. It didn't seem like it had national exposure, but I know that they did, and you can never get too much Nick M winkle because he was just amazing. Among others. So I think that it was a talent thing. Because you'll soon as we talk about this, you'll soon see how cowboy reversed the trend and that percentage of Leroy owned was mighty attractive. Let's talk about how you get in because as I understand it, you are doing a fundraiser in college and somehow get involved or talk me through how you first come in contact with the territory and have a chance to really be an asset to the business. Well, I want to college in northeastern state university and telecoil. And I was a member of the final M de Chi fraternity. Kind of like a you'd think with me and others kind of an animal House type deal. But they meaning my cowboy would run a commercial crawler or something to let people know that you could sponsor championship wrestling in your facility. And to raise funds for your charity. And I remember the deal, I did so many of them. I booked them and I just ran the show, promoted shows. I wasn't the only guy, but I was one of the guys because I could make more money. The more you work, the more money you make. Right. Learn that really early on and pro wrestling is never more true. So the deal was the, it was an 80 20 split. We got 80. And out of our 80, we provided the wrestlers in the ring and all that shit. And they got 20% of the gate, and they kept the concessions. So that was their simple deal. And I learned to promote. I mean, I learned to work with a local newspapers and radio stations, and things of that nature. So I was just getting to continue to get that education by opportunities presented me by leader went Bill. So look, Conrad, they had a bunch of extra old time fair to Midland when they were good. Around, it was a who could get to the trough early. In other words, he's going to be involved in the double knockout at the office to get their check. Or not, whatever. So I. Had a great education in that deal. But it was 80 20 split. I did a show in our college gym in telecoil. I think that time was known as Redmond fieldhouse. I don't think they're either read me anymore. Politics got that deal killed. Even though it's a capital, the Cherokee nation get that. Their team forever was known as an issue red man. That's not politically correct anymore, apparently. So they changed their name to something else. I don't know what it is. It's nonexistent on non meaningful to me. River hawks or something like that. And I had a logo in school there. I met my first wife there. Yeah, I sure did. So anyhow, that's another story for another podcast. Which will never happen. So, you know, grandpa's got, I got grandkids now that lineage. My daughter's she's a licensed physician assistant. I thought about that. She had trouble with high school math, and now she's writing a script. Give it a shots and all that stuff. So I'm proud of her.

Maybe i don't know could make a decision. Yeah it's hard to say what Number two You know nikita koloss term from russian bagai american baby face crew cut. Yeah it was pretty impressive. He was such a heat magnet as the bald russian Oh yeah oh yeah. Whatever you said from robin stale high school in minnesota right but there's so many significant territory days. That was a cover. Lost argue had one major a year. Maybe so it's hard to say because it's such a a ongoing fabric of our business is hard to say one or two nikita stands out to me as a pretty significant on. Yeah when he when he turned it when he came out and follow dusty to the to the steel catering in greensboro and the four horsemen were attacking and they became the superpowers. Yes that was. That was a huge turn and the crowd alma fellow. That was a big one right. That moment i think butch returning he'll on dog was big. Embiid sal of and of course. His dog dog bolted but should have been the heir-apparent dog spot as far as the in that role sound negative or bad on the band debate as an african american baby face but trade was the answer to dogs departure that we went another out. 'cause cowboy was hell bent to do to develop another black star on on the dogs level. And they're just four in a people wanted to. They want to be ripley. They didn't wanna try to riff dog where the guy that was didn't have the fiscal stature. The head when he was a shape he'll to face turn jr. That was Face to he'll turn based to heal okay. 'cause nikita would have been the opposite. And charlie's ask you a heel too busy. Yeah yeah yes he's asking what was l. the to the elements about all those things that what we saw today the surprise and the fact that the chance of already developed a some degree of emotional investment and to the character so i'm i'm thinking Starting to think of some more great. I one of my sentimental favorites for years and years and leroy mcgurk cowboys territory. Where i started seventy four Skandar akbar general was danny hodge boyhood hero Tag team partner. They wanna racial bills all they did all the things that you would expect tainted do hodgin akbar and then all of sudden they wrote together. There were my first writing. Do when i first got the business i i was in the car with the hodge and akbar and they loved it because i did all the drive. And they're the veterans. And all i needed to do shut my mouth. Listen and go to school. More often than not hajjah go to sleep and at barn. I would talk football or wrestling or sexology or where it was so that was a significant one there because that was a real adjustment. They had ricca They were doing all their uh their travelling together. They had assured hotel rooms i shared. They had they get a hotel room with two beds and i would Wrap myself two of you. Know the very sanitary bedspread asleep on the floor on. Thank you but i felt obliged. I didn't. I didn't have you know where i was. Money sent home so to speak That's why knew that being a referee was fun. You got form but it was not going to be my long term solution and i did a good job i my heart into it and i got taught a lot about the psychology of the business. I've being in the rain when you're refereeing matches guys like Origin here and harley for example you can't help but learn you learn for.
