"Year once again and each team scored a goal in the first period each team scores a goal in the second. Joe Thomasson back in the NHL studios. Dominant. Cahoon puts Chicago in front midway through the stands. But Patrice Bergeron a fantastic shift at the end of the period. He broke up a Blackhawks scoring chance then buried the tying goal on the backhand. It's two two after two. But right now, let's head back to Notre Dame stadium and rejoin Ralph strangers. Thanks, joe. My pleasure to be joined by longtime winter classic veteran and former NHL radio colleague Eddie Olczyk. So great to see you happy. Happy new year to you. It's been an interesting twenty eighteen let's go back and revisit some of that from a personal standpoint edge you had to overcome some real health issues take us through how that went. And what the experience was able to do for you. Well. It was a battle and a half. Or sure getting diagnosed with stage. Three colon cancer back in August, twenty seventeen ralphie and first time at our family had ever been really touched by this horrible disease and anybody out there that is in a battle or is going through cancer or know somebody or will themselves, sadly. And there's different stages. But you know, it test your will to live and the support I had from my family my wife of thirty years. She was there every step of the way my wife, Diana, the hockey community a horse racing community. The Blackhawks obviously doing their games for them locally and just so many family and friends like yourself that reached out and. Pet. Enough quiet time the last me a lifetime. But battle battled hard. And there are times when I just wanted to bail from chemo treatments. It was just the side effects were just awful, and my wife grabbed me and just said, you know, you're not going to quit and fight for me fight for our kids and fight for all the people that love you. And I kind of got me on the straight narrow and proud to say, I'm cancer free. And I got my big scam coming up in February. So hopefully that all is a positive sign, but it's horrible disease and want to try to rid ourselves. And I try to tell my story ralphie because I want to try to help prevent one person from having to go through what I did. Because they said look if I would have had a colonoscopy when I was forty five years of age. They would have kept me away from the chemo. But the recommended age when I was when I was diagnosed as fifty since I was diagnosed and cured. They lowered the age to forty five now. So which is a great thing. So we want people to make sure that they're taking care of theirselves. If they don't feel good make sure they raise their hands. So I'm feeling good. And I'm glad to be back at the winter classic last year. I was on the I'm back. I'm off I'm healthy and working with a great doctor. Yes. Absolutely. This is Chuck of NBC television. And also, of course, the Chicago Blackhawks TV Comcast did Chicago Edsel the hawks tough year. They had they've changed coaches. They had a very long slide. They won five of six coming into the winter classic today. What are you seeing about where they're at now while they're there? Not chasing the game anymore. I mean, they're what happened in that long losing streak. I think they had lost like maybe fourteen seventeen games, don't quote me. But I mean, they were falling behind a lot of those games ralphie. And when you're chasing again game in a National Hockey League. It's it's very very difficult. The power play was not very good for a while. They've gotten their power play goal in. The goaltending has been very good all year. Unfortunately, no Corey Crawford. Cam ward has played very well, Colin Delia comment and from from the American Hockey League a good job. But I just think for them that they've gained some confidence by winning some games. And even with all the great, you know, veteran guys that they have in winning Stanley Cups. You know, this was a this was a Bruce team. And it went for a long period of time, and they dug themselves a big hole. Look they play of their forty second game already. And you know, they got a long way to climb, but lots of positives with some good young players and Patrick Kane is nobody hotter right now in the National Hockey League. The first star of the week this this past week in a National Hockey League. So the warmest turned a bit, but they got the work cut off for him to get back into play. All right. We're it's too early to ask about horse racing too early. But but we don't have enough time for you. And me we'd love to dive into that. However, handicap the second half of the NHL season for Makudi alike. Well, I think it is Tampa and everybody else in Eastern Conference on what team are the Boston. Bruins gonna go. And maybe make a trade is Danni Sweeney going to make a trade, and maybe bump enhance their top nine that would be a real interesting move on my part in the west. I think he could you know, roll that octagon down the street, and and there are eight sides to an octagon. Yes. To me. I think Winnipeg to me I think it's their time to take the next step. So, but it absolutely wide open. Again, what general manager is going to step up and and try to enhance his team's opportunity whether to make the playoffs maybe to get home ice. And and if you can win a couple of rounds, and all of a sudden, you give yourself a chance so it is absolutely wide open. But I look at Tampa. You know, look, it's Washington. They got a great confidence. But I look at tap of being the team to beaten National Hockey League. All right. So thanks a lot recovery was the theme of two thousand eighteen thriving. She'll be view. Yes. It is twenty nineteen Gordon. Happy new year everybody you bet. That's Eddie Olczyk. Let's send it back to Joe Tolleson in our NHL radio studios. All right. Thank you. Ralph and always good to hear from Eddie Olczyk two periods in the book. It's too to between Chicago and Boston in the twenty nine team Bridgestone NHL winter classic. What about the twenty twenty version that and more coming up from NBC sports and Westwood One? This is the National Hockey League. Corporal,.

"It's just an amazing congressman jim and it's a great question the biggest reason why it's so difficult we had a salary cap in the league to and if you look at the organizational losses from the second cup team last year steam and nick benino playing in nashville matt colin playing in minnesota trevor daily signing with the detroit ron haines playing in toronto marc andre flirty dina goaltender and so popular and pittsburgh being the goaltender in las vegas i mean those are major major chris kunitz longtime thing when now being a member of the tampa bay lightning those are six major losses from their organization jim and they found a way to plug in young players so their scouting department's a good job they found a way to put it in established players like derek for sar and riley sheahan in trade so they're pro scouting people are doing a great job so all in all it's just magnificently run organization mcguire nhl analyst for nbc sports joins us you in the jungle you'd also working the boston toronto series and boston has outscored swallowed twelve to four in the first two games with their top line accounting for twenty points how dangerous is that group right now they're very dangerous but this is a different kind of an equation now they're coming into toronto and and i just manager jim because there's terrible weather in the east coast i just landed here and everywhere i went once i got downtown try but he's talking about the lease so it's not just boston coming here to play game three against the toronto maple acer basically playing game three against the entire city of toronto and maybe the whole province ontario i mean it's just bad intense you know but boston's very good there wa coach bruce cassidy they're young coach has done a great job with them but i think the biggest thing is danni sweeney their general manager cam nealy the president gymnasts nominal vision and they decided to transition their roster few years ago and they went young and they went skillful and they went fast and when you put those three things together especially with the coaching that they have it leads to a real promising program and that's exactly what the bruins have right now and we're talking to peter maguire pierre.
