"I'll be bringing you some of the best stories that covered during the week. One of the big stories that developed this week. Federal executions are back and for the first time in seven years A death row inmate was put to death in Indiana Danieli. Lewis was a member of a white supremacist group and was found guilty of murdering a family of three, including an eight year old girl in 1996. There were also two other execution scheduled to take place this week. For more on this story will speak to Tim Evans. He was a witness to this first execution and an investigative reporter at the Indianapolis Star. Danieli was convicted in a 1996 murder in Arkansas. They gun dealer again need his wife in the woman's a year old daughter, he and a coconspirator above conviction, three counts of murder. They were both white supremacists and his colleague and it was the mastermind of the group Chevy Keogh was tried first convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Danieli was sins after Chio and got the death penalty, which was a lot of attention for a lot of people because he was seen as the ringleader and here was actually the person you killed a little girl, which most heinous aspect of the crime. Did they say why He got the death penalty over Keogh. Harassing. In 2014. Retired federal judge who sat on the case and retired federal prosecutor both wrote letters to the Justice Department, saying they didn't think it was fair. There was an indication also, one of the victim's relatives had written that Keo came off need clean Caddy was more articulate. He had some strong character witnesses on his behalf. Where we had a neo Nazi rolling seven tattoo on his neck in terms of character witnesses for defense. He looked symposia and I have been damaged in a fight. So in a lot of people's opinions, it was more of a parent's then culpability that created the disparity in those two sentences. And his last words in this whole thing was your killing on innocent man tell us a little bit about the delay in the execution. Part of it was Lee was part of a lawsuit alleging that it was cruel and unusual punishment. The use of the one drug protocol the pentobarbital. There's been other executions that have brought a similar things. So it was put on hold. And there was this moment where Lee was on the gurney for A few hours while the judges were still kind of debating back and forth, and then they ended up giving the go ahead. Lee was actually scheduled me since last fall and appeals at that time regarding the one drug protocol, which was obviously knew for the federal government and execute anyone since 2003 he was put on hold and then he was scheduled to be executed Monday. At 4 p.m. And there were last minute wrangling over the weekend Friday as federal Circuit Court judge issue to stay over the weekend. Another superior Court got involved, remove to stay and then they're for your last minute delays on Monday and ended up any was scheduled to be executed at four PM about 2 a.m. The Supreme Court ruled that the excuse you could go ahead and I was always scheduled for four AM and we got called back to the prison and left her to act right after that ruling and went to the execution chamber. We were in there the laughter four AM and waited again that there was one last appeal. Dudley had been in Excuse chamber percent, about 4 a.m. a little bit longer than we were, and was strapped to the gurney and the actual room, which looks like a emergency room in the hospital. He was strapped to a gurney from four AM and Jill. They began the execution of laughter. 7:45 a.m. And in the end, they said that this drug pentobarbital has become a mainstay of state executions. It's been used over 100 times without incident. It's considered less painful than other lethal injection protocol, so that's why they went ahead and approved it. You were there to witness this execution. Is this the 1st 1 that you've witnessed? Yes. And hopefully the last Did you notice any complications with the protocol? No, it did not appear it. I obviously you know, I'm in a glass window. I could not necessarily hear what he was saying. If you said anything, it looked very peaceful on calm. He did continue to breathe longer than I expected. I don't No, no, no, but I expected it wasn't instantaneous. It seemed the over a matter of two or three minutes, at least after the beginning is from the drugs. But he didn't dry one of the horror stories you read out of place like Oklahoma and Ohio, where they had to box executions. There was nothing like that. He kind of moved his head at one point a little bit. He doubled his lips a little bit like you may be blind Bubbles came out and there was a slight twitch in one of his arms. But beyond that, there's a Reno was trained, You know, wrestling against restraints or no suffering are wild trash or anything like that. You appear very peaceful and in a surreal sort of way. You mentioned? Obviously you hope this is the last one you were to witness. I just have to ask. How has this impacted you? This was just a few days ago. But how has this impacted you? I think it still hasn't all sunk in. I knew other people had covered executions before and I talked to him a little bit and so far knock on wood. It was emotional, obviously, but it wasn't the kind of Ah emotional impact that I had expected. Necessarily. I don't know Some of that. He obviously wasn't reticent, all even making a kind of apology. He was Kind of defiant in his last moments, and I was able to be more detached. And I thought I might be being only five or six feet away from where it happened. But time will tell. I was up for about 36 straight hours. I had a little sleep last night. I haven't processed everything but trying to steel myself as much as possible. And so far so good, I guess. Tim Evans, investigative reporter at the Indianapolis Star. Thank you very much for joining us. Thanks for having me today. Another big discussion this week was the reopening of schools in the fall, and it continues to be a contentious discussion with some committed to on campus instruction. And others on Lee Online. Los Angeles, San Diego and Atlanta, three of the nation's largest school district, said this week that they will begin school online and then bring students back later in the year. For more on this story will speak to Laura Meckler, National Education reporter at The Washington Post. What is happening is that their conversations and pretty much every district cross country about how this situation and there are some that you plan to open up as normal five days a week..

"Beautiful. Lakeland, Florida Hey, Terry, Welcome to the pet show. Hi, Warren. Thank you. I have a cat That's two years old, and I can't get her drink water. How he ever drink the water here with food. But she doesn't want to drink wine and trying to make containers. But what can I do that there's a couple of things. Okay? Have you ever noticed the cat may be drinking out of a flashlight or anything? No, I tried to get her to do that. Well, here's what I want you to do. A lot of cats will not drink water when the water isn't moving, And the reason I say that is instinctively. If water isn't moving, the cat assumes it may not be safe to drink, so it's not uncommon, whether it be a wild lion Tiger or ah, typical house cat. To to try to get water moving and refused to drink water that stationery The fact that giving her wet food that's okay because she's getting enough liquid inside. But what I'm gonna recommend that you d'oh good amazon dot com or Chili Dycom or whatever you want to go to a local pet store. And I want you to get one of those little fellas. There's little water fountains and made specifically for cats. What it does is it has the water constantly flowing when the water is constantly flowing, like, let the cat sniff it first. Before you turn it on. It's very quiet. Even some of them even filled with water. 98% of the time when I have a cat or dealing with a cat that's not drinking enough water by introducing a water found or what airflow to them. They feel safer and we'll drink it that way. That would be my recommendation at this point if he's still not drinking. You call me back next week. I got some of the tricks, but it sounds to me 98% of the time. Once you get water that's moving. The cat feels more comfortable and we'll start drinking it. I've even had cats with stationery, water in dishes that actually would take me apart and kind of swat at the water. Get the water in the dish moving because again it was moving, so therefore they felt that it was safe, but I would definitely not inexpensive. You can kick them for really, Ah little amount of money. But I would get one of those fountains at this point is that the captain checked by event there's no diabetes or anything like that. No. Yeah, So she's a healthy cat. So that would be my recommendation. At this point years ago, I worked with a really, really horrible situation with cat would drink and what I did is I took a little chicken boy on mixed it with water and frozen into an ice cube and let it melt. And I got the cat. They drink that way, But I don't want you to do that yet. I want you to go out and get one of those small founds. Let's try that first. Then you call me back will go further. Okay, Great. Thank you weren't giving and give that kid now going on with. Don't go anywhere. That's good. But let's put Terry on hold and I am going to send Terry. You know what I am going to send Terry? Some Cats and Christ. Thankyou. Thankyou out. I always forget my mind goes a little crazy. "Are pretty efficient. One receives they hire reward for taking on additional risk to extent that stocks are. Riskier than bonds in the future. We one could reasonably expect and demand a higher rate of return in an efficient Mark, thus equity investors should generally continued to trust the process. If the goal is a higher rate of return while you also do have to accept volatility. But what if one not only wanted to invest in stocks, but you wanna be like Warren Buffett and try to beat the stock market Alcan you go about trying to achieve this goal weeks? This so example too of reasonable processes is trying to beat the benchmark. So once one decides to invest in stocks are true approaches invest passively in the market cap weighted portfolio or Secondly attempt to beat the benchmark, Jeff invest passively, this can be done very cheaply using mutual funds and ETS the charge, very low management fees to almost Eur nowadays for those that attempt a strategy to beat the benchmark, they can do this. However, in two ways you can make your own stock selection or you can use ETS or mutual funds that have some strategy, but the goal here is actually pretty simple invest in stocks, while attempting to beat the bench now given that this is the goal is there a process, our second step that we can follow in an attempt to be the benchmark. So we're going to start with the assumption, which I think is accurate that just randomly picking stocks is a bad idea. So at that baseline is. Let's turn to the evidence in the past what systematic strategies have been shown to work. So after reading the journals in the nineteen nineties, you can come away with the conclusion that a few strategies worked in the past I is value investing, which is purchasing stocks that are cheaper on some measure, such as the price of the stock divided by its earnings, the P E ratio. The second is momentum investing purchasing stocks that had done the best over the past year, while exent winning Zam, the total return over the past year. This is standard momentum portfolio, then you say okay peers to work. What is the actual evidence? And again, I'm gonna plot the returns to top and bottom Dessel, sorted on value or momentum from nineteen twenty seven to twenty seventeen. This date is taken from Ken French's website. And so we're going to look at five four folios the market, just S and P five hundred value, which are the cheap stocks rebound annually growth. Which are the expensive stocks. Rebalance Danieli, the fourth and fifth portfolios are high and Lohman high momentum is basically the top Dessel affirms ranked every month on the past, total returns over the past twelve months in ignoring last month low momentum. These are the losing socks. They had the worst returns over the past year and what you notice is over this ninety year time period. Nineteen twenty seven to twenty seventeen. You see that the SNP returned..

And then he addressed the event and he very contrite. Very remorseful as to, you know, what happened and I tell you, you know, this is an event where they were raising money to open. Four more reading centers for underprivileged kids, they've already opened fourteen of them. So did he make a mistake? Absolutely is the only mistake is he is incredibly, you know contrite in a barest about it. Yes, he is. But, you know, a lot of stuff being. Said about Patrick Peterson the person. No to me, as someone who knows him very well, and is known him over the years in seen him and his wife, Anthony, raise money. I mean, these are really good people doing really good things, and he just made a really bad mistake. Hey, don't we all? So it's going to be costly. There's no doubt about it. "What I today. With twin? They split was. They couldn't stop him from type that's what he called. I gotta go. Gotta go talk now, and and and all stopped on the stop after eight and you're so was from report one quick story on that up stairs. True. We'll be called the attic at the question at what you've been in before. Remember, you were there is that he had a seat up there. And it was always a lousy place about fantastic is considering anybody can't thereby probably fifty on the south there. And and then never come up. It's like he was he didn't he didn't do you do that. You know, you had us all private Cherokee up in the restaurant up. A rope. But on Sundays at taking boats all afternoon at the masters come up there for five an hour and a half some fear about I don't know seven o'clock, and he would do the fastest typewriter in the south and Hugh citizen. And then they get up and walk out that was Sports Illustrated story, that's how he wrote it. And of course, he's look like a masterpiece when you read it I once asked Dan what I am. Britain boasts in Gusta, and you'll appreciate this earlier in the week, comma. Well, it's funny. We we have to close here you, and I were talking about this just the other day on on your program about these. About these stories and on top of all that he was close friends with Ben Hogan, which would have gotten him into any hall of fame, wouldn't it? Yes, it did. And I didn't know this this read it that apparently Oakland tried to get him to to to play golf professionally. And I if I got fifteen seconds of real quick, I'll tell you that one thing is when I was there. Dan, and I call Cisco play golf and we've played golf and he kept hitting the ball. And you get the woods, and you cook it these cook, some more hook some more, and I've never heard that expression. The by the way, says of my book dead solid perfect is made to be its own HBO tonight. So I watch it. So I go turn on the TV watching it. Randy quays places has called for Danieli, whatever the last bucket up whatever they want, and he gets up on a t and he hits the ball. And it goes into woods. Look, some more expert expert of excellent. That's that's where it came about. And I that was that was playing golf with that Cookson more many, thanks, buddy. Really? "Com. Just use the keyword mom show Cassandra. So glad you're here because we get to discuss some of these things why people are at the beginning of their tax journey. So if you have any questions that you like, okay before I get all of the paperwork out, and I get a little Manolas folder out. Start looking at all these pieces of paper you can call today. Or are you grab a glass of wine? That is you. Just flash forward. My basement office. That's exactly what I did. So if you have any questions, we all need some help, but it's tax time five one six four hundred what does seven one that is the number for the mob show, if you have any questions, and that I made sure it was a wise pitcher though, because I don't want to be. Exactly exactly the refund. I wanted to be. But I wanted to also eventually get audited. That can I ask that question. I feel like that's one of those things that we use the word audit or we hear audit, and we get panicked. But what's the likelihood of me getting audited? What are those things really like how often does that happen breath? The the likelihood of that is probably very well. Okay. Maybe a little more. So the if you are a small business owner, and you know, your expenses are are some large numbers that you know, that could bring it up, but but most of the time where people are receiving IRS notices or letters. It's more of a correspondence where the IRS received like a ten ninety nine and it wasn't reported return. It's not a full blown audit. Now. Let's also remind people because I think that there are so many things that are going to overlap during this conversation Cassandra and brat because there's lots of things like you just said. What an example of the kind of correspondence that you will get from the IRS. And I know that we've talked on previous shows Cassandra about all of the tax scams. Kind of interaction that you can get so Brent as you said, you would get an official letter from the IRS they're not gonna call you and like a robo-call or any of that stuff and say come down to the courthouse right now. Give us money. Exactly. Yeah. You'll never see a phone call or an Email from the IRS. Okay. Unless you've already had a previous correspondence with them in regards. Okay. So if anybody calls you and says come down and give us a visa gift card or you after wires this money getting scam. Hang up, hang up and don't worry about it. I just want to touch on that real quick before we get into the changes because they were talking about last year. One of the biggest scams was that someone would have somehow filed your tax return. You're actual with your social security number your name gotten you a refund. Right. And then you would say why didn't even file yet. And they would say, oh that was a mistake. Someone would reach out to you. Then in say, send us the money back. Right. You'd think. Okay. Yeah. 'cause I didn't I didn't file yet. But that was the scam. That's how they got the money because the money got sent to you than they would say, oh, we need it back. It was a mistake. Right. So that's not going to happen. I mean, you you're not gonna get sent to check. No that absolutely. Danieli said you twelve thousand dollars. And so don't think that you have to wire anything that's not how any of those things work, even if you do actually oh taxes. There's a process there's a way that it all gets printed out. So, you know, those extra things like when you as a CPA do my taxes. Brent what do I need to bring you what I mean? What's the basics that I've made to make sure I didn't accidentally throw away. Different from how you would have gotten ready to do your taxes last year when you're putting all the papers together. Sure. Nothing's really changed in regards to you know, what you need to assemble together. You know, they talk about this as this. Huge tax lodge change in impact. But there's really no change to what you need to gather. You're still gathering any documents that you receive. Ten ninety nine.

"Annually, and presenting that I that gives you cash flow, and I would test that immediately because that could also be a changer where. If you start getting third and then forty percent and then fifty percent, and then eventually the majority to pay a year consumers when they see that calm is sixty dollars. It's eight dollars a month or sixty when Bill Danieli I think a large percentage, I don't know the percentage off the top of my head. But I think a large percentage do that. And I saw that with also fit Bod another accelerate accompany and use a bunch of these are saying when build annually. I would do that. Now, you've got cash flow coming in. So I think that's a good story to tell investors and be cognizant of the fact that when you go out to raise money, it's going to be a three to six month process, and they're going to be looking at your growth each week during it, so when you fire off this you can have to serve two masters one you have to spend half, your time fundraising and the other half you're gonna have to plot out weekly growth and just say over the next call it twenty weeks, we're going to spend this amount and grow this out every week, and you're gonna have to go to your part. Owners and team members and say I need you to hit these exact numbers of growth, you could be off a little bit. But this week we have thousand dollars or actually in your case like five thousand a week or something next week. I wanna have exactly five percent growth. So I wanted to be five thousand two hundred fifty dollars in 'em. MR whatever it is. And just start that trail. Now, they could easily hit it by creating this when build annually number. But if it's going up into the right every Email because I got your Email recently in the update, and you didn't have any of the revenue charts. And I was like, where's the chart because if it is going up like buried like halfway done thing. There was some indication that things were working out. But people are busy you're up against a lot of startups lead with the weekly chart and have the weekly the monthly and the quarterly chart now of some people are gonna look at and go. Oh, Joe from Russia. I remember her. Yeah. Oh, she figured out. I haven't pursued angels yet though. That's my I'm interested to know. Which are the ones that I I mean, obviously, you're any any investor who sees a charming up into the rights gonna take the meeting. That's the thing that founders have to understand. It's very easy to get caught up in, you know, the unfairness of the world or how difficult it is. Or? People want to grow too fast and unhealthy..
