Canadian PM Trudeau says rail blockades have to end

"Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau was forced to plead for patience as he dealt with blockades of rail lines across the country this week the disrupted shipments of everything from oil to passenger trains for more we go to Bloomberg Daniel vocals in Toronto thanks Bob rail traffic across Canada ground to a halt this week as protests against a natural gas pipeline in British Columbia stalled the flow of goods and created a crisis for the federal government Bloomberg's Kevin Orland joins me from Calgary Kevin thanks for coming on the show thanks for having me on the surface this is about one aboriginal community in BC which appears to be at odds even within itself over just one natural gas pipeline project how did things escalate so much further that's right so there is a group of the hereditary chief of the wet sweat and indigenous community in northern British Columbia that we had blockaded the coastal Gascoyne pipeline and stops workers from from building up pipeline really this month a couple dozen of them were arrested for these blockades so that that those arrested by some fairly dramatic footage and other environmental groups and and activists around the country sort of took up at college and have been protesting in solidarity with this thought that within the the what's what and tried and and how disruptive has all of this been economically so far both been pretty significant we had there was one estimate this week where an economist pared back his forecast for economic growth for the fourth quarter but point three of a percentage point down to one point five percent to one point eight percent so it's significant and this is also still early it depends on how long this lasts yeah obviously major disruptions for cargo passenger trains have been affected you know a number of of business leaders have been warning that this could be a major black eye for Canada's international reputation and in terms of whether or not we're seen as a good place to invest and do business you are an ex Pat living in Canada what do you make of that assertion well it it's it's it's hard to imagine that this doesn't give some investors pause when they're looking at with making decisions about whether to invest in Canada or or not you know already the energy industry here has been through some competitiveness challenges with opposition to oil pipelines that's really prevented the the dentistry here from expanding output and that's because a lot of you know foreign companies to sell out of the oil oil industry here we've at one point there was more than thirty billion and and the Canadian assets that were sold by foreign companies so it's hard to see how this would help that situation

"A mobile news update now the news I reckon soldiers have been killed in an insider attack in Afghanistan Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr says the attack happened yesterday in one of the country's most dangerous provinces administration very committed to getting American troops reduced Afghanistan and eventually soon they helped to get American forces out of the country whether they can pull all of that off and with the Taliban are willing to come to the table for a peace agreement renouncing violence still made very much remains to be seen twenty seven people dead more than sixty wounded in what officials in Thailand are calling the worst shooting in the country's history investigators have not yet released the cause of a house fire in which a mother and her six children were killed yesterday morning in Mississippi police say the thirty three year old mother was an elementary school teacher for six children ranged in age from one to fifty one fifty for free this is Bloomberg daybreak weekend our global ahead at the top stories for investors in the coming week I'm Bob moon in New York coming up a look at the agenda in Washington but first golds had a nice run lately but it's nothing compared to the rally in a couple of lesser known metals key to the auto industry and for more on that we go to Toronto and Bloomberg's Daniel vocals thanks Bob as environmental priorities gain industry traction we're seeing all kinds of winners and losers emerge many of which you may never have heard of Bloomberg's Lynn Thomas and joins me from London with a look at the palladium to start at least listen we're gonna start with palladium thank you for joining us thank you so tell us about this metal what is it and what is it used for an interesting one so the kind of considered a precious metal like gold and silver it's a not family group but different in gold and silver and that it really has industrial uses so if you think about your car your car has a catalytic converter and there's palladium and that will eventually act as a catalyst or filter or convert things like nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide into one time for things like carbon dioxide water nitric and mainly used as a as a filter for coffee and we sounds in a were the better a little because they're going you can it is actually trading at a value above gold right now the the rally in this metal has been phenomenal over the last two years why absolutely so I think for a few reasons one a man standard all over the world are increasing and with higher emission standards you need more palladium in the car and it only took a few ounces that are needed but that might higher palladium and then also you know I think investors are really catching on to this is a a green metal and something that's going to be needed and more in the future for example hybrid cars also need more platinum palladium in the catalytic converter so I drew the combination between the fundamental picture and financial speculators jumping on board that that causes tremendous Raleigh still on the van of kind of weird and wonderful medals at less is written about rhodium and palladium but that one is also soaring is is that kind of the same story exactly so rhodium is really hot like palladium on steroids it's a much shorter supply and so the move has been far more dramatic two years Brody in prices are up five hundred percent and it it can kind of story but because the supply squeeze even tighter you've seen a more dramatic move in rhodium and there's been obviously lots of short term volatility especially around corona virus of late but basically if you look at kind of the the chart for palladium for example a it's a pretty steep curve up are these prices supported do you think by the demand or is this a a speculative bubble that could pop we both here from from companies and analysts that that we talked to clearly a speculative component of investors wanting to jump in on the momentum and and be part of it at the same time I'm all of that is supported by a really strong fundamental story which is the world needs more palladium hot admission standards are going up and the reality is is that you know car makers aren't willing to invest to come up with a substitute so you're not seeing the kind of substitution that you would you would perhaps in the past yeah I I wanted to ask you a substitution of technology tends to have a way of keeping markets under control how much risk is there that that industry can find cheaper metal substitutes for either of these yeah I mean not the real question that we've talked about for the past couple years at what age will carmakers puppet who and it's just something that we haven't seen yet I think part of that could be that a lot of car makers are so focused on getting their electric cars fully up and running that you know there just isn't the are in deep budget to spend on redefining you know cars catalytic converter so they can use platinum and instead of palladium and I think that's part of the reason why you seen such a dramatic move so interesting Lynn thank you very much thanks Danny that's what we're watching this week in commodities in Toronto I'm Daniel vocals thought all right thank you very much Danielle for that insight and now we turn our attention to Washington where president trump was acquitted by all but one Republican in the Senate this week clearing him of impeachment charges the president's response was defiant and unapologetic trump claiming his critics were out to get him phone call that was a totally appropriate call I call it a perfect call because it was and they brought me to the final stages of impeachment but now we have that would use word I never thought it would would sound so good it's called total acquittal and now what trump paint as a victory has some in Washington worried about retribution for more on that we had to our Bloomberg not in on one newsroom in Washington or any Morris is standing by with a deeper look at how this all might affect some of those working for the federal government Amy thank you Bob Bloomberg at U. S. politics editor Kathleen hunter now joining as Kathleen the foreign service workers specifically in the administration are worried about retribution what if you've been hearing yeah I think there's a concern out there that you know now that trump has been acquitted by the Senate and the impeachment saga is behind him that that you know he could turn his focus to what Sir he and some of his advisers have really those in a circle of characterizes the deep state and there's been a sense from early on in terms of ministration that perhaps there were forces within the government that could be working against them and so I think anyone who from whistleblower to anyone else who might have been involved in testifying or giving evidence to the intelligence our house intelligence committee that investigated the president I think there's a lot of concern out there that the president could seek retribution and that those people's jobs could potentially be on the line would it be job cuts would there be other ways for that retribution to show its head if that does indeed happen well certainly you know people can be removed we will know from having water from the ministration people can be removed from their positions and trump doesn't hesitate to do that when someone you know runs afoul of of of you know what he thinks they should be doing there's also the potential for cuts to different programs you know and that would be outside of the the with the White House the office of management and budget has a fair amount of latitude to sort of re program funds that could be another Avenue that the president could take are they looking to clean house is it just not clear at this point I think it's not totally clear at this point certainly you know in any administration if trump is reelected and that the F. at this stage but you know if he is reelected in November and any administration there's a fair amount of turnover during the second term and so that could be a natural time if there were changes that the White House wanted to make and particularly if they wanted to make them look like they weren't interact reaction to impeachment then that could be a natural time to make some of those changes however you know that still many months off at this point and it's obviously no guarantee that trump does win reelection and and those of foreign service workers who come under the purview of the state department do they have any recourse when it comes to their boss I mean can they appealed to the secretary of state and they certainly can but I think it's important to know you know that Mike Pompeii was the secretary of state is someone who's been very very tight with trump and someone who's been a little hesitant to really ghetto run afoul of the president and so I think there's some for at least some question there about whether they would get you know very sympathetic ear well let's take the flip side of this coin if we could add Democrats are also looking to continue their fight to the president may feel vindicated he may feel empowered to let more people go to clean house to find more people who are loyal at the same time Democrats are looking to continue their fight and the issue of tax returns the president's tax returns who gets to look at them that is she's not going away no it's not going away and you know I would expect to be on the tax return issue for you know other aspects of congressional investigations of the president to continue in terms of his business dealings things like that and so but obviously the tax and the the ability to view the tax returns is one that is right at the top of the list and has been you know is in the process of being litigated through the courts and so I think that you know that something that I would imagine Democrats will will redouble their efforts on but I think there's a political risk here you know in that at the end of the day it looks like this and eat it trump has done a very effective job I think of casting the MPs your inquiry as a political witch hunt and so Democrats don't want to seem like they're beating a dead horse when it comes to this they have to be a little bit careful about how they pursue this matter and actually you bring up a good point it's not just his personal tax returns it's any of his financial documents relating to his company's all of that is something that lawmakers may want to get their hands on but the courts have to decide if they can that's correct so the courts would have to decide whether or not that's legitimate for them to be able to get a hold of those documents and so I think that's something that we we're going to continue to watch and see potentially play out over the next you know couple months and as we look ahead to next week we we already know that the New Hampshire primary is on Tuesday but the day before the primary the president is going to be in New Hampshire's that strategy well absolutely we saw him do something similar going to Iowa for the Iowa caucuses and so I think that you know New Hampshire like I was not a very populous state but it is significant in terms the nominating process and it's also significant in the sense that it could be a battleground states in the general election and so I think it's a way for trump the kind of you know get out ahead of the Democrats getting a whole lot of attention in New Hampshire there's obviously going to be a lot of reporters there and so it's a way for him to you know divergent Emma grass and put it squarely back and self all right we're gonna watch it with you thank you so much Kathleen thank you Bloomberg U. S. politics editor Kathleen hunter and that is what is happening in the nation's.

"Ninety nine one newsroom in Washington thank you Amy now let's head to the commodity space where marine insurance costs are soaring in the strait of hormones after a wave of oil tanker attacks Bloomberg's Daniel Boko has more from Toronto good did you Daniel thanks Bob tensions in the Persian Gulf have been rising steadily over the past three months oil tankers have been sabotaged and Iranian drone shot down and a British ship detained Bloomberg's Alaric nightingale is following developments and he joins me from London nice to speak to al hi Daniel how are you today I'm well interested in this area that we're talking about strait of Hormuz how important is this how much of water to the global energy market what is going to a new state of the mouth of the Persian Gulf so you said of the sea borne petroleum place through it is off of the world where they've been ongoing tensions between Saudi Arabia and wrong I'm a long who's over the years made multiple face to destruction this rifle movies and now within the house back in the nineteen eighties in the so called I'm cool the soul due to ship attacked them and many of them actually sunk about parts of the world so if we had any kind of copy like that now it would be a really serious issue for the global market and I guess the overhang of of that history the memory of that history must be something that is very much on the minds of people who have to work in the straight right now you talk to one of the the I I was lucky enough to interview the captain of the tanker Hugh was setting the ship three three whole may use and he was just walking McCurry saying you know we have six people on a brief bridge of ashes looking out for false by use might be approaching but he made the point what are you gonna do if you get the wrong revolution recalled coming down uploading until until she's been trying to take control of your vessel unity nothing you would have given a let them take control is very tense yeah I bet these people have families that are there all worry for themselves and yeah what what effect well I'm not surprising I guess because of that the cost of marine insurance against war risk is absolutely sword if the situation does continue to escalate what's the probability that Iran closes the straight all together you're right about the insurance with looking at temple increased which really happened off to the taxi in may and June the most recent feature of British tanker was actually seen as more of a U. K. affair now that the water effect on fuel question about putting the straight for me I think that would be a holiday a thing for which TV Iran needs home is itself and it it needs to keep the good will of a hole in the country the country that the support that they need hello Mustafa normally they need this the oil from the other countries as well as from Iran I'm a call allowed to be closed by the and and maybe that's why there hasn't to date and that the same kind of massive reaction in the oil market yeah I know I think it is just majestically not gonna be that easy I the US is a very powerful force defined given twenty because she's always would be difficult so yeah I I just think that the oil market is still in a very cynical frame of mind about what will actually be done in practice thank you very much that's what we're watching this week in commodities in Toronto I'm Daniel vocals Bob thanks Daniel coming up on Bloomberg daybreak weekend a look at the earnings sleep for the coming week I'm Bob moon this is Bloomberg.
