"In the Republican party is that you have an establishment candidate and then for that part of the party that feels like the candidate is not aggressively conservative enough is not healing to the party line enough. There's an insurgency in he, I think reference, Pat Buchanan's campaign against H W Bush, and that's what we saw. In fact, in that primary challenge of than sitting Republican president. But here we have a Republican president, who isn't just an I kept trying to press him on this, because I think it's so important isn't just supported by so many self identified Republican voters has the broad support uncharacteristically for an establishment figure, which is what President Trump is now of the party's base. I mean, they are rapidly enthusiastic about him and. So it it's almost like a backwards insurgency he's trying to run. And if he's gonna make a dent in there, and I see what he's doing with many of these states than allow crossover voting because of the Republican National Committee rules and trying to amass some delegates, but that can only get you so far. Well, it can get you at least your name place, the nomination on the convention floor in Charlotte, which is ultimately as far as anybody could possibly get. And I think that, that what he's going to need to do that, though, is some sort of organization that if there's any element of support out there Republican voters who don't like Trump can can corral it and without least even a loose organization, then it's just him and that's not enough. But Daniel Strauss, if you look at history, the last time we saw insurgent candidates against a sitting president nineteen ninety two George H W Bush, Pat, Buchanan, nineteen Eighty-one, Ted Kennedy was challenging Jimmy Carter. But if there are two or three or four Republicans vying for that insurgent role. Where does that put a Bill weld? Or governor HOGAN gets in or governor casing. I'm still skeptical that, that would make much of a difference simply because the presence approval ratings in the Republican party are so remarkably high higher than any incumbent president in their own party, at least in the last two or three presidents. I don't think. So I just I don't know. I mean but at the same time, Larry HOGAN is one of the most popular governors in the country in a blue state, Charlie Baker, another governor from Massachusetts also has been messing mentioned, although not as frequently as HOGAN as possible presidential candidate. But like I just don't see a groundswell across the country for these candidates in the same way that you would need to even make a dent in this primary. And I think if some more formidable Republicans got into this race for whatever the race might be. I think any support for weld might move over to Larry HOGAN or John casick somebody who's a little bit more established as seen as a little bit more of a consistent Republican in recent history, Bill weld was a member of a libertarian party ticket and his views in terms of what appeals to Republican primary voters have been a little bit all over the place. So what he's trying to do. Is appeal to those Republicans, who don't necessarily have an issue with all of Trump's policies. And you try to kind of get him to talk about this with your question to him fill in the blank at the end. It's about his unorthodox behaviour, that is a problem for the president, and it's a problem in a general election in twenty twenty but Republican primary voters like him. And they have decided either that they like him or they like what he has achieved. And unless there is a new development which with Trump is always possible. Then there's not going to be a lot of room for a primary challenge to make any headway. Don't forget in the nineteen Ninety-two primary George W, H, W Bush was coming off of raking, his no new taxes pledge. At least there was something that had the base of the party upset. And even then there was only so much you can't and could do let me quickly, ask you about the economy. The president is in Japan this weekend. The fed chair says, for the moment he will not raise interest rates. But are there warning signs with the China trade deal that may not be resolved until June at the earliest or the stock market that's been all over the place this week? So I think that, that in terms of the economy, broadly, I haven't seen. I've seen it concerns that eventually our luck will run out every business cycle has a beginning. Middle and an end. I think the more immediate danger for the president politically related economy is not so much that we're getting to the end of an expansion, but that the president's own policies, particularly related to trade mess with what has been his best area where he gets his highest job marks. He is trying to do something that a lot of voters want him to do, which is stand up to China, and a lot of it's unfair trade practices, whether economically related, or national security, related, the problem is this is not easy because China's playing a longer game than we are. And their second access to US markets is their secondary concern. The first concern is the plant in the United States as the world's preeminent superpower. And if the president thinks this is going to be easy. You could end up with an economic backlash that hurts in exactly where he was the strongest in two thousand sixteen where he needs to remain strong in order to win reelection. Those states across the industrial heartland, Daniel Strauss, these Technica, these trade negotiations really are causing whiplash in. In the stock market, and it calls into question, the actual source of support, maybe not in what President Trump sees, but his advisors have have stressed again, and again, and again, focus on the economy focus on the economy. Judges in the economy isn't always do that. I think that is the source of his popularity and if there is a dip, if there is a recession as a communists have been predicting for a while. I think that could really put this presidency into jeopardy. But we haven't seen that yet and I don't know if it's going to happen before before voters cast their ballots to veteran political reporters. Daniel Strauss have politico, and David Drucker of the Washington Examiner for your insights and questions. Thanks for joining us today. Thank you for having. "Yeah. This is a sports but more than that. It's a business and don't ever forget. That is a business and we see in very crude ways. It's times, you know. Call me against brought less now for me. It is like a joke. Right. It's a joke. I won't Jones versus coma heavyweight. That's my fan request. You know? Yeah. No. I absolutely Dustin is one of the good guys as you just said, and that was a great moment. Like, yes, I knows an interim belt, and I've been very critical of the term titles, but see him get that title to see what he's doing for that foundation back home and donating the money to to build this this playground for disabled children and to see that documentary back in the day. How could you not be happy to him versus max was a hard fight to watch. 'cause they're both such great gentlemen. Right. Outta Sonya and gasoline as well. I mean, those those two comportment if that would never used the components of the fighters, the the I was reminded why gentlemen, fighters, absolutely, right. And I love those moments as well area. When he reminded of those with Israel and his coach on the ground hugging. Each other. Like that is why we love this. Look, I'm not saying that I don't have the trash talk. I'm not saying that I don't love the poking the trash talk. It's fun. But there are times when that is just so refreshing and just what the doctor ordered right? Yeah. Well, at the end of the day, it's the whole reason why do this. I think you know, much as I love living luck, an international roof stone covering the fight worlds. The the the the the narrative of people's journeys, the triumph of the human spirits while of Paralympics school. I was mentioned to you is the same thing. Witnessing the triumph of of the human spirit when people have come from very difficult background. So I interviewed Daniel Strauss recently. What a story Sean crooks in both in ballot. Oh, what a full each other recent as you know. I mean, I go away with TIs in my eyes. My with the hands on my spine standing out with some of these guys because I know that there's only about two percent of people at like fight schools in the whole world where we're in a minority world here, we're subculture, and you know, we'll have to step outside. It's why we read time magazine Willison CNN news, or it isn't a, you know, some people listen to sports center because they've got other things on L. The euro was on there these days, whatever in a ball your own full center. Thank you. The the, you know, the big picture is the bigger picture from what we do the love of fight sports in these people pitting themselves at a certain way to the Sutton time in place against each other and bearing their kind of spiritual warrior souls is the there is a bigger picture out. There is the ripple effects of that person on that community on in that ghetto in in in on the children who watched who say I can do that people Henry. So who does really inspiring in that way as well? That is the big picture for us. And we both love telling those stories because it resonates with grandmothers, and you know, and sisters children because they go, wow. To person really have to go through that. And you know, there's a there's a there's a spectrum isn't there a voice a first world problem in third world or an eighth world problem? But I think we must never lose sight of the fact that these people are individually proving. Themselves that the going they're working through things themselves putting themselves on the line? They're entertaining us. It is a business. But there is a bigger picture that we can project into well. And the moments of gentlemanly conduct the projects that people do against knife crime..

Like the first time. Real nerve wrecking. I was going about seven miles an hour. I thought it was about the Dan resist. It was kinda comical actually if you were there, but it was nerve wracking mound. More nerve racking than the hours before the fight. I think so because I love writing stuff much, you know, what I mean? I don't wanna I don't wanna get that up. I don't wanna get nothing up. I wanna get his five or not. But riding a definitely don't want to give up. You know, you go down you big yourself up, whatever. But I don't wanna have to give up something that I love so. Doc is gonna tell you whatever they're gonna tell you. You know, I don't really did there for a reason they gotta make money, whatever. But someone that time and to me that's who I really care about. "This news for New Yorkers is that Michael Bloomberg announced that he will not run. Also, remember how Bernie Sanders had a campaign rally in Brooklyn last Saturday, even though the New York primary isn't until April of next year will not to be outdone. Elizabeth Warren has now scheduled the rally for here in New York tomorrow. And it looks like uncle Joe from Delaware is about done biding his time. We will talk about that and more now with Daniel Strauss from politico who's covering the presidential field. Hey, Daniel, thanks for doing this. Welcome to WNYC. Thanks for having me. So I see political has a scoop today that says in the latest sign that Joe Biden will run for president. His team has brought on crystal Alex, the head of the influential Latino victory fund. According to a source familiar with the move who is Cristobal, Alex. So Christopher Alex is a is the former head of the Latino victory fund and a fairly high ranking democratic operative in Hillary Clinton's twenty. And sixteen presidential campaign. The reason this is important is because one of the biggest towels before President Trump candidate formally announces is building staff and hiring veteran operatives who probably are competitive among job Sierra employers who are working for competing as aspiring democratic presidential candidates in this case, Alex is someone that a lot of campaigns have sought after have been looking to hire a New York Times angle on Biden today says he's close to a decision to run. But hasn't yet made it for sure and other Democrats are getting impatient. Can you explain who might have reason to be impatient with fighting for this? I mean, partially it is democratic candidates or would be candidates who feel that they also inhabit the same lane as Biden so candidates like Terry McAuliffe Sherrod Brown. On the governor of Montana. Steve Bullock and Washington. Governor Jay Inslee candidates who are white older man who are not seen as sort of the new wave of democratic lawmakers, but feel that they can appeal to both liberals and working class voters who voted for Donald Trump in the last election. What do you see is holding Biden back if he's close to deciding that hasn't really yet? Well, it's not as his not his advisors who are very interested in him running Biden has been waffling on this for awhile. He's he's partially felt that he doesn't have to jump into the primary early like some of his competitors. But beyond that, he's he really is not sure about another presidential run. He's run twice before. And they have not gone super well in both cases he finished. He ended up lagging near the wrong end of the democratic primary field. And I think that still haunts him age. Also is a factor. But Democrats close to Biden say that he is in his enough energy. In is is in good enough shape to actually make a serious run at this. Let's say he does run how much would you expect by to take a more explicitly centre-left? Let's call it set of positions and run that way openly against the emerging progressive wing of Bernie Sanders. Come Harris, Elizabeth Warren. Kirsten gillibrand on things like Medicare for all green new deal things. Like that. I, you know, it's really hard to say right now, I think one thing we do know is that fighting will definitely lean on his record and the political victories that he was involved in in the Obama administration. But yeah, I think that's a good question. I I've been surprised in this primary so far of who has tact and who has sort of been assigned the moniker of moderate versus liberal. And it'll be interesting to see where Biden lands on something like Medicare for all how he addresses that in comparison to ObamaCare and something like the green new deal Biden has a long long legislative history. And that is potentially helpful or potentially damaging depending on how the rest of the field reacts to it. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his opponents if he if he runs points out that he. He backed or opposed legislation that conflicts with some of the design for political policy proposals. That Democrats are really excited about right now. Now, Michael Bloomberg announced this week that he will not run. And I heard that Biden's likely entry had something to do with that you ever reporting on that. I mean, what we do know is that Bloomberg had been looking at this for a while it sort of a tradition of democratic presidential primaries that Michael Bloomberg looks at running for president, then refrains, but his advisers and the data he had from polling suggested that he just couldn't overcome a strong, Joe Biden presidential bid are that he would be clips by the the former vice president, and it would be on on some things like the same constituencies that Bloomberg would lean on he could not Biden essentially would suck the air out of the moderate or the center left lane that Bloomberg. Would look to inhabit. I saw you re tweeted someone's comment that between Bloomberg deciding not to run and Tom Steyer who runs those impeach Trump commercials. Also deciding not to run there will not be a self funded billionaire lane in the democratic primaries. Do you think backlash against that status at self self-funded billionaire help discourage them, yeah? I do actually I think it was a cautionary tale for a lot of these superwealthy putt potential candidates. I've been surprised in the past few months about the strong distaste for the prospect of a self funded, especially after the two thousand eighteen midterms where a lot of democratic operatives here in DC and democratic advisors were excited about certain candidates who could self fund their campaigns or wouldn't be beholden to special interests. Or that was the argument that they made but here in the presidential Rena. We haven't seen a strong. Interest for a self under Bloomberg says he will spend a lot of money on the twenty twenty race just not on his own candidacy. Did he say what he'll spend on to influence twenty twenty politics with respect to? I mean the specifics of that remains a little unclear right now. But we do know that Michael Bloomberg has a strong distaste for a second term, Donald Trump and term, and he's willing to spend a lot of money to help Democrats. I think it's fair to say that he was helpful in helping Democrats take the house and on specific issues like gun control, the environment, Bloomberg has already positioned himself to spend a lot of money to push those policy points and support candidates who aligned with him on those issues definitely on gun control definitely on climate change, which kind of brings us to someone who did officially entered the democratic field this week. You mentioned him before the governor of Washington. State. Jay Inslee, who I gather is running on a very climate change focused platform, can you describe how he's framing his candidacy. I mean for a while now Inslee in in the lead up to his announcement Inslee was not shy about saying that climate change remains the definitive most important issue of our era. It needs to be addressed. And he was interested in forcing the democratic primary in the the presidential the overall presidential debate to have to address this issue. He's never shied away from reporting that said he would he would run a presidential campaign that at the beginning at least would be a single issue campaign focused on climate change. And unusually there's a super Pac supporting Jay Inslee that is called act now on climate that it- it's rare for presidential super superpac to even be named something in reference. To one specific issue this super Pac if well now that Inslee is running will support him. But if Inslee drops out at any point in the race it will force. It will look to force the rest of the primary field to continue to discuss climate change and Inslee is going to lean on his record. And how he has a proven as governor of Washington that a lawmaker who is very focused on climate change can be successful and can produce a prosperous state. Is he adopting the term green new deal, which can mean different things to different people? I, you know, it's funny. I haven't heard him address the green new deal too much, and he hasn't adopted he said that he supports the framework, but he sort of caveat at that a little bit and made sure to say that he wants to look at the details. And this is what a lot of some of the more experienced Democrats right now are saying. About this. They do see the peril of strongly opposing it. But at the same time, they wanna see specifics because it is a very new proposal pushed by Alexandria. Oh, Cossio Cortez. Who is one of the most young exciting politicians in the liberal base right now, we just have a few minutes left with Daniel Strauss from politico who's covering the presidential field as we talk about developments in the democratic presidential early going in this past week. Now last Saturday Bernie Sanders held a campaign rally in Brooklyn tomorrow. Elizabeth Warren will hold a rally in queens. Do you happen to know if this was preplanned or some kind of quick response to Bernie in order to have a presence here? I mean, I actually don't know that that it was meant to sort of counter Bernie Sanders. I I will say that in the I think what we're seeing in this prime. Mary so far is a recalibration of important early states in the map, it is unusual that Elizabeth Warren would go to an hold a rally in New York, which traditionally a popular stop for presidential candidates to raise money not necessarily to hold a rally so early in advance at the same time, though, it is a a nest for young democratic voters. And I think both Sanders and Warren want to tap into that youthful enthusiasm in the democratic primary and one's rally will be in Long Island city, which mmediately puts her in the position of having to take a position on the divisive issue of Amazon is she coming to promote herself to the base on that. Well, maybe this was scheduled weeks ago. And you know, before Long Island city was such a flash point. I would not be I don't think that the location of Long Island city is is a. Went to incidence. Yeah. I this is a a major part of Elizabeth warns platform to fight overreach by major companies and to really tap into frustration among voters about largesse in the business community. So I would not be surprised if she addresses Amazon when she's there, which is parallel territory because that may or may not be a winning issue for a politician right now since some people wanted Amazon out, but a lotta people wanted Amazon to say stay and and resent the push that got them to withdraw. Yeah. Exactly. I think that a expect warrant to be prepared to try and address the nuances of the Amazon deal last thing the Democratic Party said yesterday, it will decline any invitation from Fox News to have a democratic primary debate on the network, and my first reaction was wait. Is this new is this surprising in any way to have democratic primary debates been held on FOX in the past. Actually, don't remember that happening. Yeah. I don't either. I I think I think Brian. I had the same reaction as you. I was a little more surprised that there were that a debate on Fox News was slated to happen at all to be honest. Look, I I think that this was partially are mostly in response to this New Yorker article by Jane Mayer about these these synergistic relationship between the White House and Fox News. And we're right now, we're seeing among Democrats is a strong unwillingness to throw negative punches at each other. There are a lot of Democrats even for opposing candidates, even the candidates themselves. Don't really want to get into the mud that's going to happen. But I think the the the overall feeling is that a debate with Fox News would only accelerate those. Negative attacks on each other Daniel Strauss from politico who's covering the democratic presidential field. Then thanks a lot. Thanks for having me. Brian Lehrer on WNYC, stay with us..

"So there are some young guns that have this type of style. And I'm really kinda hinting more towards Israel at Asana where I keep thinking a crafty veterans going to Phnom some like Johnny Walker this past weekend. Some of these guys that are striking. And it's kinda like at another level seemed to be giving fits to the veterans, and I'm gonna go with and we've I don't think daily can get it done two years ago. Daily coulda got it done. And that's how long this fights been simmering. But I'm gonna go with I don't think so mad. I think he's going to put on a clinic. Right now, I'm starting to lean towards daily, and I'm gonna tell you why guys I feel like this whole time. It's been daily that's been wanting to fight MVP not the other way around. And if you look at what's going on in MVP life right now, he's got some personal issues. And it's kinda rough to go through that. When you're going through probably will be the biggest fight of your career, and every p her daily has been in that situation before but we've also seen what you guys have been talking about. And that's Paul daily get frustrated by fighters when that happens he gets taken out of his game. And I think that he can do those things but right now on mental warfare. I'm going to lean Semtex, Paul Semtex. All right there. You have how the voting broke down. Seventy percent said no thirty percent said yes. Five hundred eighty four votes came in. "And these are flyweights. Sorry. Sorry light. And they are featured on the main card that is headlined by cave. Alaska's and Francis and gone. All right. We're also joined by former two-time bell toward for the way champion Daniel Strauss. He's got something for you. Daniel what do you have for Paul was going on, man? Hey, what's up, brother? Question for you with you being close to now, you said, you think you have, you know, three fights to you're in the mix or whatever with you being close to to get that that title shot and commission. San know who do you think your next three fights assuming that you win this against Vic who do you think your next fight would be to put yourself into a title shot? Good question, man. Well, obviously, some of it depends on how you know the fights. After me mix up you got gay CI and Barboza fighting in Philly just about a month after me. So I'm definitely watching that fight very closely, especially if if I pull off the win next week, I would. I would love the, you know, a winner of that. But they're up there to Kevin Lee still out there, and he's been a staple in the division for a really long time. So I think he's tough match-up. I'd have to get past potentially a guy like gay Chee. Maybe even a poi- a fee if he maybe lose the fighting these take somebody lower ranks. So I think is like that like employees a or or a bar Boza. Maybe somebody even lower ranked just to get a win. So you know, depending on how Dan Hooker wins his next fight or something like that. So a lot of a lot of fights out there to get me up there. But I think the big ones would be a gauge of our Boza, obviously, I'm trying to avoid Pettus who's my teammate. I'm not gonna fight him. I don't wanna fight cowboy because I turned him for a long time. But he's he's gonna move up there angst now. So there's a lot of things and big names that could catapult me up the. That possible title shot. In that all those names who who would you like to fight the most NAN, I think I think just engage. You just something about that guy. Feel like it was destined to happen. Just 'cause how using greedy he is. And that's with no disrespect. I just love his style calorie fights. And I think the fans that just eat that up at me and him ever got matched up. That would be a good one. Yeah. I wanna see me to. All right. First things. First though, you got James Vick on ESPN one hypothetical. Exactly. But, you know, just answer the question and be honest. But yeah, I got a tough challenge ahead of me next week. But I'm more than prepared for an excited to get to. Stay healthy..

"Pretty crazy. We'll thinking like what should we give them dean's, Don? So we'll get Roy Keane. Should we even get us? You know, we may have found guy, man. Man, I was thinking gigs. Now, it's time to make the comebacks that Dan or whoever and and here, he was O'Connor's soul. Skyro- doing a great job and everybody loves playing for him to. It's a great time to be mentioned audit fan. The every this this run just keeps on going. But what I see rang rung to talk about was all Komi and steep a and steep, a if you're gonna be Choy and be cheekiest deep is and try and get another shot off like a for around one knockout loss. You gotta to do it at a division like at the at the week divisions like heavyweight ally, wait heavyweight right where they give those things away if you were trying to do that. And you're in Daniel Strauss is the vision it the way a lightweight. You would never get that chance. Could you? Good. Doesn't it come down? I was thinking about this guy's what we're talking about. Isn't it as simple as this? Can we pretend we're managers for second K your steep as manager and they say you have the opportunity to fight came Velazquez. And if you win that for sure they can't deny you which we've heard that before. And they have denied you wouldn't you say, I don't know dog. That's kind of tough match-up at very scary to take on a guy like came Alaska, and then from there you've got to get the title shot, which you say, maybe we chill and just try and finagle our way in there. And then if you look at the other way around and you say Daniel Cormet, and they say, hey, Steve wants to fight you. But we got this big payday with Brock. If you're his manager. Wouldn't you say, I doc, you just beat them seems like it'd be fight him. Again. That's a scary ass man to fight to times. And if we lose that then we don't get the Brock match doesn't it as easy as that. Yes. Except for one thing. Go back to the first manager if I'm telling CPA all is. Hey, man canes dangerous. You never know we might blow our shot. I think steep it would have to pipe up or the manager would go. However at the same time, we're not we're kind of in that doghouse with the youth. See you see what I'm saying? So maybe he has to realize too that he wasn't sitting pretty and it's kind of evident by what we can see. But by by the way, I don't know that that that's the case. But I always felt like that contract. Hold out. I just know the history of the UC and they're not fond of the athletes. So when they come back. It's it's you know, you at some point in time have the pay you have to pay the piper. And I think that's all logical. But to be honest, I don't even think that that's yet. Can't fight was even on the table guys. I don't speculate or care to speculate on that kind of stuff much, but let's be honest. I don't think that match make sense if you're trying to build an already weak division. It's not how the US traditionally match makes its hard cords would love to see that match. But at this time bites that's the one I would wanna see the most it's true. But you look at look at the timing. Look at the style of matchmaking stupid was probably had his own battles with negotiations. I don't even think that was on the table morale. Event. I think is what Ben is calling in and talking about especially Ben left off by saying featherweight and lightweight some surprise with earlier talk..

"You know, I'm on me. Me. I'm ready to here. Pretty sure for some reason. I was dreading the last five minutes what you said, I can't walk. I'll tell you the same. I'll tell you that much. I was like oh boy wonder if that means even though the next better, even though you're not paralyzed like you were at the time of the accident or told you are now we're gonna walk again. Did that mean that you you weren't going to be able to compete against them? That's great news, Dan. You mean, here's the thing in reality. There's changes to my body. You know, what I mean, it wasn't something that was a light Tappin of you'll be good in six months. You know, my body went through some shit. So they are you know, difference in my body's, but it isn't stopping me from, you know, fighting it's not stopping me from getting down getting hit getting punched gin slam getting up. You know, what I mean so much Dr is there my body can hold up to it. So I'm going to continue. You know what I mean? So that's all it was for me, if my body couldn't continue our hold up than it's no reason for me to try to continue to. But even with you know, what everything going on a can note up. So I will continue you've already had hard training sessions that resemble a fight or you have the lifespan. A Doma head since then too. So all really it wasn't who did that. Give that person to look dog. Man. It wasn't a I don't think it was his fault. Just you know, we sometimes you get in screaming with the undertaker tombstone. A little bit like that. But yeah, we just in scramble, and that's another part of it have been able to be in scrambles. And you know, move way I have to be able to still do that, you know, and all that all those key. So I've passed all those tests, mentally physically medically. You know what I mean? Range of motion. Still have. Again, like, you know, the neck that I had before you has to, you know, issues to go to car Proctor and all that get adjusted stuff like that. But yeah, I'm good. You know, still working? I'm still strengthening still. Rehabbing. But like I said before I'm able to move forward. Now, I don't want you to go up to that doctor and give them the finger or cursing out. But I would like you to stop by his office and say. Was it a young guy or an older guy? It's Otago tonight. Listen, fellow you may be on your way to check in on retiring, you tell people all these years. I think you jumped the gun here a little early. I was gonna say it was the young guy. You could say learn learn a lesson for the future say, I'm not here to confront you or anything, but you can't give up on the human spirit. You know what I mean? Look at me, I can walk and I'm going to be competing or I've already competed depending on when you see him. But I don't think you're too old to ever learn a lesson, you know. This is you know, it's been a huge lesson from me. So you know and at his game. I'm now having to learn on news from fighting. So you know, it is never too late to learn and the doctor I'm spoke to anybody about it. I haven't really, you know, once I said, I was gonna get better. And I was gonna move forward. A lot of people said, you know, it's not gonna happen after that. I never really gave to fucks about it since then I've just put my head down to work. You know, what I mean like so? I just you know, I guess it. I've had ups and downs. But from the time that accidents happened. I've just put my head down work times. I didn't feel like I get here. But. Details on new here. "On. Interest that right legislation in the dead of night. And I know. I have compassion. The courage and the fearless determination to get that done. Daniel Strauss should two things there that the setting of the late show with Stephen Colbert. And also the announcement of an exploratory committee. What does that mean to set up an exploratory committee? I mean, it is not fully jumping into the race is taking preparatory steps and started the precede the. It's complicated. But basically, it's it's doing the groundwork. And allowing a candidate to able to fundraise and set up the infrastructure to run for president. And it also offers a candidate a little suspense this way Jila brand or Warren can have an announcement about an exploratory committee and then later on also announced their actual campaign. Even though the strong implication is not every candidate for president announced an exploratory committee a great deal of time. And not every person who set up an exploratory committee runs for president. But most of the time they do we've got calls. We'll go to Cody whose first up in Aurora, Colorado Democrats line good morning. Good morning. My question was how likely do you think it is that Andrew Yang? It's going to be successful in twenty twenty because he was he is the most exciting part of this upcoming election for me preschool. The candidate is the man is Andrew Yang. Tell us who he is. And why he's running he's a long shot candidate from New York. His profile is actually pretty low and small, but he is actually a contender for the presidency in the United States. Look, I if Andrew Yang can increase his name recognition to a point where he is able to compete with. Jila brand or Warren or President Trump? I think that would be a remarkable. Twist in this election cycle. But right now, he's a relatively unknown care. Let's hear from our Republican line next Anna in new castle, Delaware. Good morning. Yes, I'm coming. Great person that Joe Biden date for tragedy. Book secrets. Jazz by John, John Kerry. Love guy billion dollar deal with the guards every China and twenty fifteen and I said what what he was trying to do is catches on church. And and and Kerry, Sean, I Chris pine. Every there in in China, and they all right because it the picture in the book. Biden, cocky stage, and John Kerry and Valerie Jarrett there they were all in filed in this multi billion dollar deal where the businesses over in China and Daniel Strauss does Joe Biden had political baggage. I mean, that's the feeling that his would be opponents have it's I mean Biden's been in public office and run for president multiple times before. I think in the cycle, you should expect. If he does run a lot of questions about his handling of Anita hill and her questioning in the early ninety s. I there will be questions about his tenure as vice president is handling that end Biden has a pension for speaking off the cuff, which can sometimes backfire the headline this morning in the Washington Post reported this story, I online last night advisors to former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz looking at him running as an independent for president in twenty twenty. We already heard from Tom tire the billionaire financier saying he made a big announcement denouncing was he's not running. Do you expect to see more sort of independent voices? I'm ready to run for president. I think it's a possibility. Scholz was definitely one is definitely one of the more high profile would be independent candidates in the past few years. It's a little bit of a surprise that he's decided to run as an independent because. It is much more difficult to set up access to getting your name on the ballot two other sort of basic advantages that competitors running in the democratic or the Republican primary. So there could be more. I doubt there will be that many Lumberton North Carolina next up Brock on our Republican live rocket morning. Good morning. Gillibrand clip he just. Represents a bigger problem because he'll getting bigger on the democratic side. But they still have the had no clear message every candidates gonna say the same thing. And that'll be a problem. Have a good day rock in North Carolina. Let me ask you about your reporting on Sherrod Brown. The peace one of your one of your many pieces we've been seeing the past few days past week or so of shared Brown, planning to tour other early states what advantages and disadvantages to share it. Brown have coming in coming from an industrial state like Ohio. I mean, he and his advisors feel that he has a unique set of appealing qualities in this primary as someone who's one Ohio multiple times, especially since turned. More Republican in nature. They also feel that he has a distinct appeal to Trump voters and voters who might cross over and vote for Democrats. He has a strong background with unions, and sort of a the ability to appeal to working class voters that went for Trump last. What does it what does it mean to go out and talk to Iowa when a potential candidate goes to New Hampshire or I o how do they set up the mechanism where they go talk to voters? What are they have to do to set up that structure who do they who do they organize usually they reach out to and set up they retain someone who an activist or local strategist who knows the state and can facilitate those things Brown in recent days has been doing that. And it's been publicly reported that he's lined up someone to sort of be sherpa in New Hampshire and the same in Iowa. And he's likely to do that in South Carolina. Someone who's locally politically familiar with the ground game. Let's see here. From Brooklyn Connie is on our Democrats line. We're here with Daniel Strauss. We're talking twenty twenty politics. Good morning. Good morning. Yeah. I turned on TV. And the first thing was how is politics in our state, but. The gentlemen, gave Daniel here are eerie seen more politics people getting into politics because they're not happy with what's happening. And they have strong views on what's going on. And they want to get out there and try to straighten this mess that we find ourselves in. And yes, there are more people getting involved, which is very good. I see it at my age seventy-five. I see a lot of different things going on. That are not very some of. It is not very good. And that's why more politics people are getting more involved with politics. The sad part is that they're older people that probably can't afford newspapers. They don't watch TV. They don't have cable here in Wisconsin near Madison, we have cable and our local stations. Don't talk about politics, but cable does and so gives you more insight into what's going on. Now. I do have a question the night of the elections Trump. Trump trump. I was flipping channels, and I'm sorry to say this. Well, I'm not sure because I have to say it because it bother me very much a camera crew caught at one of the campaign headquarters of Trump. The gentleman that got the word. Trump one raised his hand in the Hitler sign and some people in the audience responded back that shocked me, and of course, I hadn't voting for Trump. But when I saw that I was thankful I didn't. But over the past couple of years, more and more of his behavior is very radical, very, unstable counties in Brooklyn, Wisconsin. She leads us into the store. There's a store this morning. The President Trump is ramping up for for twenty twenty. Staffing and things like that. Do you see any possibility of a of a primary challenge on the Republican side to the President Trump and his team are taking steps to prevent that. They're trying to make sure that bylaws and RNC rules insulate him from any real threat. But those I mean there've been rumors about that for a while, especially from Ohio governor, John casick, former Ohio governor John casick who has run for president before and strongly suggested that he's planning to run for president. He says he's open to it. So it's possible. It would throw a wrench into Trump's plans. Because there are there is a small segment of the Republican party. That's dissatisfied with him and would like to vote for someone else. Also in recent days, Maryland, governor, Larry HOGAN has taken steps toward. Signaling that he's thinking about running for president in the Republican primary. Daniel Strauss is campaign reporter for politico. Joining us on Washington journal, you're listening to our programming lineup from Sunday on C span radio WCS PFM Washington time now to continue our broadcast of the Sunday network. Talk shows this week on Fox News Sunday. President Trump makes Democrats on offer to end the longest shutdown in US history. The standoff throwing the state of the union a democratic trip possibly even the Super Bowl into disarray. You'll breakdown where things stand with vice President Mike Pence and we'll discuss whether the president's offer will jump start negotiations with congressman James Clyburn. The number three democrat in the house all this week on Fox News Sunday the ball is now in the Democrats court after the president made an offer yesterday trading full funding for the border. Five point seven billion dollars in return for temporary protected status for the dreamers and for refugees in this country, as well as reopening, the shutdown the disruption keeps growing after the standoff over the president's border wall reaches day thirty yes, we are into the fifth week of the shutdown, and we are honored on this very regular program to have the vice president of the United States Mike Pence, Mr Vice president, welcome. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. Chris. Good to be here. Okay. So we're going to have a piece from Kevin Corke explaining everything that's in this plan. But I'm just gonna ask you briefly. What are the president will offer? With president offered was a a good faith compromise to address what is a genuine humanitarian and security crisis on our southern border, and and the government shutdown and the Senate leadership Senator McConnell have agreed to bring this Bill to the floor on Tuesday. Congress will begin its work. But really the president did over the last month and notably over the last two weeks was direct our team to meet with rank and file Democrats to find out what they were looking for, you know, the legislative process traditionally is Republicans would offer their solutions Democrats would offer amendments. But the president said look we want to we want to put it all on the table in a very real sense. What President Trump did here was he he set the table for a deal that will address the crisis on our border secure our border and and give us a pathway to real. But as you well know House Democrats rejected the president's plan before he even offered it speaker Pelosi called it a quote nonstarter, and I wanna point out specific objections. They say that it doesn't reopen the government government, I which they say that it doesn't provide permanent protection for the dreamers and the TPS. Refugees. It's only three years, and they say that the full funding that the president is still demanding five point seven billion dollars for the wall as a waste of money. So I guess my question is is the president willing to sit down and go she ate the differences or is what are you offered yesterday? His final offer. Well, there's a legislative process that he's going to begin on Tuesday in the United States Senate and. And. Pointing to see speaker Pelosi. Rejected the offer before the president gave speech. I mean, look. The president is offering a solution. And what we have from democrat leadership so far is just sound bites and the American people want us to work together to resolve these issues. When you say work together. Does that mean that you're willing to negotiate from what the president said? Or is that the final offer? Of course, the legislative process is an ago, she -ation and up to this point literally for the last month while the president, and I have stayed here in Washington, and and been engaging continuously with democrat leadership an with rank and file members in the house and Senate what we've heard again, and again is we will not negotiate until the president reopens the government. Well, this this Bill would reopen the government. Well. Reopen the government first and then negotiate about border security and immigration. You're are you rejecting that? Well, look, I think it was about a week and a half ago. The president looked at speaker Pelosi. In the situation room and said, look, if I gave you everything he wanted if I reopened the government and gave you thirty days to work with us on homeland security issues to address the crisis on our southern border. Would you give me border security and Sunday for a wall? She said, no. So the president said to us, let's let's go to rank and file members. And since that time, our negotiation team has been sitting down talking to House Democrats, we've been in contact with Senate Democrats and the president told us to listen and what the American people heard yesterday. Was was statesmanship was was the president laying out a genuine compromise even this morning even this morning. The Washington Post said make the deal. Okay. Because they can see the both sides are getting what they want the president's made it clear that we want border security. We want funding for a wall steel barrier on the southern border. We want money for additional.
