"Minority owners coming in at some point, but he is the he is the sole owner after buying back the minority shares from Dwight Schar, Fred Smith and Bob Rothman. And what was a very contentious uh, I think And this is that I don't know if it's been publicly put out like this, But I think it was a takeover attempt by the minority owners who were looking for a greater evaluation on on their sale of their minority piece, and all of this negativity started to pop up. In the Washington Post started to pop up and and social media. These accusations were thrown out there, all of which, incidentally, Dan Snyder has claimed responsibility for even though he was not directly implicated in any of those things. Um, And the news today is twofold. One that Daniel Snyder is it was fined $10 million. At least the Washington football team was fined $10 million. The clarity on that is that $10 million will go to charities, which which Tania, his wife and Dan will choose. So it's a $10 million fine, but it'll all go to an important cause. The other thing. That I think is not insignificant in this is that Dang Dwight Schar, who was one of those minority owners, and a lot of people believed was involved in the smear campaign on on Daniel Snyder has been banned for life. From the NFL. So, uh, while we while we want to vilified, um some of the things that went on inside the Washington organization, the the campaign It was put out to embarrass and try to force. Mr Snyder to Snell also came to light and again, I'll read it, I'll say it again. Dwight Schar, who was a minority owner, has been banned for life from the National Football League. Take that of what you will. Um, but that's not the story. So a lot of people there's some misconceptions out

Washington Football Team owner Dan Snyder to buy all minority shares for $875 million, report says

"Team owner Daniel Snyder is buying out the minority owners. Uh, the deal has been approved by the NFL Finance Committee. Daniel Snyder, the not going away. And there was a report that came out that they're not changing their name their nickname. They're going to be the Washington football team. You're not giving up. The team got total control. And Change fast, right? Member kind of teetering on. Oh, there's an investigation. Washington Post There's sexual harassment. Uh, Man, get a paid off somebody. And then all of a sudden, it's like nothing to see here once the season starts, Daniel Snyder's like, Yeah, Paul and you could find 20 articles from late August. Daniel Snyder must sell this team that NFL should remove Daniel Snyder. The minority owners of the team were complaining about Daniel Center. They're not could be anywhere more minority owners of the team. He's bought him all out going to buy them all out. Dance IRS entrenched And I go back to what I was told. I don't know how long it's been. It's been years and Daniel Snyder wanted to build a stadium back downtown in Washington, D. C and I was told by a very good source that the only way that would happen is if he changed the nickname. To the team. They were known as the Redskins. Well, he's changed the nickname And he have a stadium downtown. Yes. Yeah, but you get the sense that you know, there was clearly Ah, hostile takeover being attempted by minority owners and dangerous and that it was, like, all right, let's huddle up in the war room and start wiping people out. Yeah, let's just buy my oil. Yeah. See you guys. I'm gonna take care of all these people. Let's

"But even beyond all of that, Jim, what really got me in the interview? Was that what I really wanted to know from Ron? Was about his relationship with Daniel Snyder and all of the turmoil that's going on within the organization now and to his credit on this is one of the reasons we wanted him on the podcast because he's known for being honest and not running for questions. He acknowledged that he didn't know him. Well, he knew Snyder but didn't know him well, And in fact, when Snyder called about the job that Ron's wife was skeptical because she knew Daniel Snyder based on reputation To be arrogant and meddlesome, and those Iran's words and so much so that when Snyder and Rivera were going to meet, Ron asked that his wife be allowed to come on the interview or to come. During that process. So what? Ron and Daniel cider? We're talking football in organizational things. Stephanie Rivera spent time with Daniel Siders wife and then later they all met up for dinner and those sorts of things and then Ron said his wife came away with a different impression of Dana's cider afterwards, so Those were some of the things I wanted to get into a cz well as the team name, and that changed, and Ron said that actually, it was Snyder who brought the idea to him. And he did it before all of these issues came out about That were brought up in terms of sexual harassment and those sorts of things within the organization that the Washington Post wrote about. So there's just some interesting things that he talked about within the organization are trying to change the culture there. No sort of. It's a really good book. It's really smart book, and that's really good approach. That first podcast surgeon before you go. One more thought you've covered Alex Smith for a long, long time. What do you make of how he's approached his comeback from that brutal injury and what to say about him that he's on that 53 man roster? You know, truly Romy. I have to step back and tell myself it's not my story. And it's not my journey because obviously I'm one of those people having known Alex and his family for a long time where I'm like. You've accomplished so much, and he had a beautiful family, beautiful spirit, his approaches competitiveness. Who is the person that I just want to see him be healthy, Four kids and his family, You know, for the rest of his life, So there's a part of me that says, Man, I don't want him to play. I want him to just walk away and And and move on to the next phase. But then I have to say to myself again. It's not my journey. It's not my life. And if he feels this is what he needs, and this is what he wants. Then by all means, go for it. I think Ron has a tremendous amount of respect for Alexa's. He talks about on the podcast at that time that we talked to Ron. They had not made a decision yet on the 53, he said. There were some things that they still need to talk about. Talk about. He said he would never rule out the possibility of Alex being on that 53 because of the man that he is and because of the competitive that he is, and in fact when Ron was diagnosed with cancer. One of the first message is he got was from Alex. And he said he appreciated that so much, So I'm not surprised. I still don't know how it all works. From the standpoint of Are you truly going to carry three quarterbacks? Because right now, Kyle Allen is viewed as a backup. What I think Ron just felt that Alex had worked at this point that he deserved this opportunity, and it earned it so more power to Alex. I just I wish nothing but the best for him because he's such a class individual..

"Someone like that. Right but I think it causes a lot of fear to like when you say, let's just legalize it. There's kind of a fury like Oh. My goodness you know like what's going to happen? It's GonNa all fall apart yeah and I mean, I'm not talking about this as the. The perfect solution I mean if you if you're involved in politics for any period of time, you realized there is no policy that doesn't have harms attached to it. Maybe it benefits a lot of people and causes harm to others. This is the never ending war in politics in my approval ratings are always low no matter who you are because someone's always not happy. So but what we are talking about back to my main my. Main point is reducing harm and the data's pretty clear. This would reduce harm. It would reduce overdose deaths. A reduce incarceration would reduce cost to taxpayers and would there be some potential followed a negative wall. Of course, by all decisions that policymakers make have that as a caveat and we we've learned to live with those. We need to look at this from a perspective that is outside of our emotional involvement and when you're a family. I'm someone who struggled with heroin addiction for fifteen years. It nearly killed me I overdosed once and was saved by paramedics. I. Still think that we need to regulate it and create a safe supply when your family member who has a loved one that struggling with addiction and you see that drug is killing them killing them slowly or they suddenly die of a fatal overdose, the idea of legalizing these substances and making them available is. To emotionally charged you to look at objectively and we need to find a way to help policymakers understand this issue and family members to step back and look at this little more. Objectively. There's an organization here in Canada called MOM stop the harm. It's composed of mums and family members who have lost children loved ones to to overdose, and they are on board with ideas like safe supply providing SAFE SUBSTANCES TO PEOPLE WHO Are Struggling with addiction, let's keep them alive and give them an opportunity to to make a change. If they choose to down the road, they're on board with decriminalization and and the legalisation conversations starting to get on the table because people realize that we need to change the way we've done the this war on drugs. The war on drugs is a is a terrible distributor. It's a war on people. Yeah. People use substances. That has been horrible for so many people and it's just been a utter failure. Yeah. So I'm a hopeful person. My hope is that we can meet people where they're at that. We can see potential people saying that I had family that that saw potential in me and and that statement when your kid in your dad or mom tells Ya, you got so much potential I. think they intended as this kind of compliment but it's It's a backhanded insult in a sense it's a reality check. You're not living up to your potential you're not who you could be, and this is true of all of us and I think people like myself. When was in my addiction I acutely was aware of this. I knew that I could be more than I was I was not. Satisfied or happy with living that life by I didn't know how to pull myself out of it, and if we can meet people where they're out, we can give them an opportunity to to change and it takes time but we got to keep them alive right? Definitely an and I think when we look at the data and need look at the research, it really makes sense to do both of these things and figure out how to do it because I agree with you most people who are struggling with this, you know and it's really negatively impacting their their life maybe not huge maybe a little bit. They usually want to change they want to do something different, they need the resource to. be able to do something different. Yeah. We we could put a lot of money into treatment and recovery. If we pulled that money away from the criminal justice system and the need to incarcerate people and we shifted over like take a look at the what they've done in Portugal and how they shifted that money around and what a dramatic difference it made in people's lives, right? Definitely. Well, if anybody's out there and they're listening to this podcast, what would be the one thing you would want to tell them what would be the one thing you'd want to say I'm all about hoax oh hang onto hope if your family member and you have a loved one that struggling with addiction, there's. Hope for that person, you can be the hope for that person when they don't have hope for themselves, you can be a healthy connection point. You can be someone who meets them where they're at and says, Hey, I'm here for you don't cut them off I encourage people to not cut them off. Don't draw the line and say you're out of my life until you change that just creates further connection and just perpetuates hopelessness, and if you're someone who's struggling with addiction, there's hope for you hang onto a little bit of hope if you don't have any hope but you want hope a great starting point right reach out reach out reach out. "Is Daniel Snyder and he is going to talk about his own journey of recovery, but he's also going to talk about the opioid crisis and the overdose crisis, and also we're GonNa talk a little bit about a drug policy and particularly looking at like decriminalization and legalizations. I have a lot of questions about that Daniel you introduce yourself morning do I in. Yeah I'm Daniel Snyder storm coming out of just outside Vancouver British Columbia Canada, a project in pure coordinator with our action table here in Langley, that is responding to the ongoing overdose crisis. So in British Columbia redeclared a public health emergency just over four years ago in response to the rising and alarming number of fatal overdoses in the province really dramatic spike in my own journey through opioid addiction I was basically addicted to heroin. For fifteen years and realizing learning about this crisis that was ongoing. I realized I really had an opportunity to play some role in sharing my story in how I was impacted by addiction and and how perhaps our current approaches kearns social attitudes towards drug use is not helping a lot of people. So let's jump in and just talk about that. Well, let's start with your story and then how that manifests itself and then how. You want to change that view. It sounds like, yeah. So I don't fit into a typical narrative and when his narrative I I mainly framing addiction around the way it's presented at large to to us in society. So for a Lotta people who aren't directly impacted, their perception is formed they what they see in the media and. The media has a strong tendency of focusing on the most. Damaging and obvious of cases. So we're talking about. While the downtown Vancouver is the perfect example. It's it's essentially world famous for all the wrong reasons in terms of drug use open drug use homelessness, and in it was inevitable that if you look at a newspaper or watch a leading story on on this overdose crisis, you're gonNA see back alleys and injection drug use in the perception might be that that's precisely what addiction looks like and I I was never homeless. During the years I was inactive addiction, you wouldn't have had one of those stereotypical thoughts about me that perhaps many of us are guilty of insensitive. Look there goes drug addict and I spent. Most of my years in working really really hard at trying to hide it, right keep it a secret not allow people to find out what was really going on with me and what was underneath that or what the reasons were for. That are props complex and nuanced and heart of my own story but also part of the larger story of our our society and our attitudes towards people who use substances. Right. I, think a lot of people their addiction is hidden. It's not seeing they need help they need. Support. But because of the stigma around addiction, they can't reach out I mean they don't WanNa reach out or it's it's more difficult to reach out because of the consequences of reaching out hundred percent addiction is one of those things that we reduce people to these one word labels. Constantly, we put Phil Addict Label on people maybe it's friends and family I mean we're not doing this with the intention of hurting them by has a bizarre side effect of reducing them to just a set of behaviors without really considering. What's going on underneath the surface? What's the reason that this person is struggling with addiction? We just want to focus in on the outward behaviors and The world we've been that I grew up in and that's been ongoing since even before I was born is this one in which we have for the most part said drugs are bad and we got an Iraqi drugs we gotta radical them completely free society and the DA in the drug war and we gotta stop people from using them and I think we've clearly missed the point year. It's pretty evident that that drug war has failed and what we really need to be looking to do is mitigate the harms caused by by substances nursery we're not going to get rid of them will always. Be Choosing use substances and so our our efforts should be focused on reducing the harm both to the user and to to the society around them. So tell me a little bit about your story and how you started to get clean or how you started to get help and how how do you WanNa change that and how would that be different? Yes. So in my early years of substance use, I didn't realize. I had a problem I think that's pretty typical for a lot of people you're having fun you're young. It's not really causing a lot of consequences yet perhaps wasn't affecting my relationships or anything, and then you know something happens I had a bit of a encounter with a roommate that turned violent in the police got involved in. That was kind of one of those moments that person has in which they realize. Hey, life's. Not Quite turning out the way anticipated all this drug use has been a lot of fun but it seems to be causing some problems as well and so I was kind of the beginning of a recovery journey that took a really long time and I think that that's a really important thing to recognize is that a recovery or coming to come into the awareness that? Hey, there's there's A. Problem here I WANNA make some changes to it is not something that we can just turn on a dime it's a there's a lot of up and downs I. Look at my life in retrospect or look at that journey kind of like a a really volatile stock ticker. If you're looking at a stock chart for some company that had a lot of ups and downs you'll see that My life would hit really great points. achieve. My goal was was subdued for period of time, maybe six months or a year that that happened multiple times during that journey, and then it would bottom out and I would lack really any insight into why that would happen. stock would drop. So to speak at you, step back from the picture and look at it from a more of a big picture perspective. You can see that there was a process of a trend over that period of time. Is This The NFL's #MeToo Moment?

"Can you give us a sense of the build up to the publication of this report? So there's been a lot of drama swirling around the Washington football team, but suddenly started to get all of these dots that you could start connecting. There's a lot going on within the front office. That really doesn't add up firings in retirement in July in the NFL. Rarely happening tonight. We're! And we're too high level personnel executives who were abruptly fired and Alex Santos in Richard. Man were fire. No reason was given as to why they were fired. Then today, longtime radio announcer for the Washington football club Larry Michael announcing his retirement, he spent sixteen years with the team, the man who had been there the radio voice, he abruptly retired without any sort of official comment from the team, and he started to hear this buzz rumors flying about a potential bombshell report on Washington's football team and owner Dan Snyder. This is absolutely taken over social media with speculation running rampant then by Thursday afternoon. The Washington Post dropped the story. There fifteen women who went on the record, alleging widespread sexual harassment within the Washington football organization that spanned just about Daniel Snyder entire time that he is owned the team, so these were women who works across the organization in marketing and ticketing and finance in there were also two female reporters, one who formerly covered the team for the Washington Times and Rianne and Walker our colleague from the athletic, who also went on the record to accuse one of the men who had? had been fired of sexual harassment as well. It was the sprawling account as you mentioned fifteen women accusing sexual harassment in Washington. Can you summarize some of those accusations? Yes, so it was a lot of the very classic cases of sexual harassment things from making lewd comments about women's bodies about their breasts about their rear ends about the the clothes they were wearing to very overt sexual comments, propositioning requests to go on dates, just a lot of overall inappropriate workplace behavior. Behavior from superiors directed at female employees, and it did not seem to be a secret. Some of these women who went on the record with the Washington, post talked about how the other people who worked in the organization knew about it. They talked about it amongst themselves. There were places in the building where women were advised not to go. Specifically, there was a stairwell that had basically transparent stairs and women were told. Do not go there because there were men who. Who would stand underneath that and look up? Their female colleagues skirts all of these things that are blatantly inappropriate and wrong and workplace environment, but had been persisting for more than a decade, all fifteen of these women went on the record, but one of the few who allowed her name to be published is a woman named Emily applegate. What was her experience like working inside the Washington Organization? It was miserable it really most people know times a comment on my appearin. Screaming at you for something that you, it's not your fault. And then somebody makes a comment to you about what you're wearing and it just snowballs from there. she cried at work regularly, she felt belittled, imagined us being called stupid on a daily basis, and then also almost in the same breath being hit on for your appearance. It's a miserable work experience. Experience to the point where she no longer wanted to work there anymore and no longer even wanted to work in sports, and we should note that Emily applegate's former boss Mitch Gershman who was the team CEO at the time both denied and said he didn't recall conversations referenced by Applegate, telling The Washington Post quote I can't comment on something I can't remember. But Lindsay what actions has the team taken in response to these accusations from emily applegate, and the many other women, well many of the men who were accused in this story, all ready been fired, and we're kind of fired in the process of the Washington Post. Reporting this story, the team can say that has taken measures to address this because some of these accusations date back to the early to mid two thousands, so some of these people no longer actually work with the team and then some of the people. People that had new allegations have immediately been fired or left the team. They've started their own investigation. They hired an attorney Beth Wilkinson. The name might sound familiar over the last several years. Wilkinson took part in notable cases involving Hillary. Clinton Brett Cavenaugh and Michael Flynn and she told us we can confirm that our firm was retained by the team to do an independent review of the team's culture policies and allegations of workplace, misconduct and Daniel. Snyder and his wife sent an internal email to everybody who works organization to. To apologize for the culture, the statement saying in part, the behavior described in yesterday's Washington Post. Article has no place in our franchise or society. He's been doing play by play for the team for I don't know, maybe 30 years. He was fired this week and nobody knew it. Nobody knew what was going on. All of these people have been fired. Let go, and it's kind of bit hush hush and under the table. Several other names have been mentioned, including Dennis Screen, He runs the business operations for the team, former chief operating officer Michael Grisham. They're talking about in alleging sex parties involving a lot of athletes, team owners, some coaches from other teams as well. And this is all unfolding. There's there's a lot of other weird stuff involving this. That Is circulating on Reddit and on Twitter this morning. None of it's been confirmed, so I'm not going to go there. But it's a really weird allegations involving the Washington Redskins football team. Crazy man is not only is the name extraordinarily offensive t many people, apparently, but it goes deeper than that. Yeah. Allegations of a sexual harassment, toxic workplace and culture. Which span from 2006 to 2019 where raised by 15 women, all but one whom spoke to the Washington Post under conditions of anonymity. They didn't want to mention their name. So take that with a grain of salt. No. Yeah, right world is going crazy. Yeah, get just get rid of don't even not not even the name just get through the whole team. Like different, if something was reported, today were out injured like a week ago or two weeks ago that the conversation was about the sake that he was in now. He leaves the bubble today. Due to a family emergency talked to the Pelicans this morning, and they told me that's exactly what it is nothing else. No! No, we're we're. We're separating it from him leaving the bubble. He might end up having to sell that team. I don't think it will come to that, but it's definitely a possibility we're going to have to you know. "Proud organization you remember when that Washington was was the cat's meow, the NFL and we saw the remember Doug William Super, Bowl, performance and mark rippin right. It was another quarterback for them and Joe thanks. Joe Ties Machine. Mas and Derek leading coach dogs. We all know about Washington and all the great team to. Remember Gel a ten year waiting list, Chris or something like that to get tickets to see Washington, and now you know that Stadium Fedex field a cover up seats. They can't sell out. They haven't made the playoffs. Then things they haven't made a pledge two years in a row in like twenty five years like. Can you believe that some streak like that would they haven't made two plus two years in a row in a quarter-century, which is just crazy, so I can't wipe fans. Don't like Daniel Snyder and his ownership since he took over the T. Now I do, too. But I look and ultimately I. Think from what we read. He was not personally involved in any of this. We talked about Mark Cuban who. Kept bringing back a guy who had been accused of domestic violence. Would you say? For their website, he paid L. something. Yeah, get him out of jail. Yeah, so mark was. A more hands on with the situation in his organization, then Snyder was at least from what we've read and Cuban. You know he was able to keep his team. You're be win on the jump on ESPN and cried and all that stuff. But he was able to keep his team and they've you know. Sue. Presumably changed the culture. They brought in woman as one of their top executives to clean it up, and that's what they're going to have to do in. Washington and big tough, you know I I don't think he will and liberties because of Joey Richardson Chris and Carolina. He was personally involved. Yup these. was he was Percy accused of harassment? Yeah, exactly and that's why he was forced to sell the team. They've taken a statue down at that stadium. All that Chris because he. Was the one that that the people were saying was involved, and did the things that made them uncomfortable or harass them, and that's why he was out like that in the NFL now even though we don't think that Schneider from what we read that his actions will lead him to have to sell the team. It really ultimately is up to the sponsors. And if the sponsors? Saying they will, but if they do want to. Get him out of there. You know if they just think I mean he. He was accused of making a lot of fun of mail. A Guy that was with organization who was a male cheerleader in college, so he he's Snyder at always mess with him and. So you know if sponsors WANNA pull out because of this well. He'll be gone yeah. WHO HAVE TO SELL? Out there saying if they read what we read, Chris, we know about environments, and yes, it's under his watch ultimately responsible, but if his name was mentioned in any of that, there would be no doubt in my mind. I think there's doubt. That, he's out. Now no question I totally agree with you. Rob Read this quote..

He's been terrible friend even though he wasn't involved in this, but he may have known I'm sure he knew something about what what kind of culture was underneath him. No doubt but this is under his watch I don't think he should lose his team because of it, but this is terrible to so from a football point. They've been terrible from a culture standpoint. And was there when you were there or or did you know a lot of this was happening? Well I, can't I can't say it was here when I was hit it when I was there because at the end of the day you coaches control, de Environment and I play for Joe Gibbs M Sire Joseph not having you know a man of dignity, and everything has to be saying you never heard any of this stuff out when Shanahan was here so at the end of the day I as I read through it and seeing everything in first of all no woman, no matter what job she works, you have to go through anything like that but I also have to look at the big picture this and say who was running the ship at the time. We under GROOTEN. This is where most of this stuff is steaming from from one under a very loose ranch ship, and I have to look at their. Because I I I I was hearing, then was literally on the field every day he was, he was in the park every day. He was in his office every day and I came back to really get into the media and go to go over to the field I notice. He has separated himself and he was. He was actually listening to the fans. You know those words here all the time, but you don't always know what it means. EXURBS is way high on the list so I put it in right fast and I was like Oh. "Money It's only like a couple that have been there long Snyder. He commands zero respect, and by the way he commands zero respect for reasons that are not the same as the rest of us in large part cabal, zero respect for him think about this. He has what is considered on the books to be one of the most valuable franchises in terms of like yield per dollar in the NFL. Jerry Jones, will probably let him go jerry. Jones would sell for meat. If thought, it would get him a dollar, and he's going to let Dan Snyder out of the club happily. That is astonishing because he's done exactly on the books. What you're supposed to do in the NFL, he's maximize the Prophet he's managed to get a lot of money without actually putting out a quality product. That's the dream for an NFL owner to coast. I mean remember like college athletics as a perverse contradiction here, which is that in the pros the idea if you're an owner is to put out as bad a product with as higher profit margin as possible while still keeping people on the hook. And the redskins manages bypass that whole keep people on the hook thing and somehow managed to make more money and college sports. There's really you have to be good like that's. That's the thing. The only thing that matters actually is going to be your output because you can't be too profitable if you're too profitable. If you're too about the dollar, then it's GonNa become noticeable and people are gonNA catch onto the scam. You don't want the scam to be too obvious. Yeah, that's a great point that nobody gets paid dividends off a college football, right? It is this irrational system where people give up all this money just because they. Feel like they results, they want results and the pay that you're getting even in what I would call enhanced benefits packages for recruits at certain levels. The pay is so miniscule that you're the level to compete the bar you have to clear is so low for college basketball if you consider. The rumor is I think the number of Duke for Zion Williamson was what two hundred thousand dollars in this suit. There's alleging that he was paid two hundred thousand dollars. It's nothing that's all. That's all and that's an A. A sport where you have very few people on the bench football where you've got you know at least a three deep deep deep, depending on how you count it on scholarship that price per head goes down in terms of your level to compete point being in college, you actually have to be good in order to keep the pipeline going or everyone goes. The incentive is actually purely tied to wins and losses or the perception of how successful you are, and that last part was by the way for like schools. Schools like Vandy where somebody's winning six or seven against the year. Oh my God. What Miracles David cut cliff at Duke is you know is clear on the eight wind mark then? Yes, we're building statues to him. There will be a statue by the way of current. They still can't get ten thousand people to come to that stadium, which is really not their fault is what happens when your school doesn't have a local alumni base right, but they still get any I'm amazed. They get anybody to go there I. I absolutely amazed because. I just can't imagine like. Yeah, let's go to the stadium for a game. Why do you want to do that? Why would you watch football? I don't know maybe because it has like anti aging properties. If you've seen what happened to David cut clip there was he did. He posted a video about proper mask usage, and how you needed to wash your hands. It'd be careful with covid. Nineteen David cut cliff when he coached at Tennessee. I thought he was going to die. Yes, he. Yeah he you know he had. He had like a an incident with his heart condition. He was coaching Eric Age at one point. Yeah, and I remember that Eric almost killed him like they showed a clip of him in the booth and he had the action look of somebody who did not get enough blood to parts of his body that needed. Yes, thanks to stress and his heart about to give out. Then he posted a video where like I know, he's got new job. He's look. He's got a beard. He's looking slick. How stunned! I could not believe that ain't Is We all like him? I can't find the person who doesn't like him our. Buddy Steve White likes. Don't like nobody. Yeah, nobody would hits it. No and speaking of people who need to wear headsets. You want that Mandera. headset because peyton manning swears by it, so peyton manning says the do knows what he's talking about. He's on. Yes i. have still just waiting. When this Washington thing draw. If I mean, it seems pretty clear to me. That is going to and I've talked to enough people to know. This exists like this is not. This is not something. People are making up. It exists. We just don't know what it is and we'll boy. What's it like to be Rivera right now? I think he's good man. Good while he sorta good right? Ship that everybody's jumping off, but if a new owner comes then new owner is not necessarily onboard with Ron Rivera program well. He's also every coach in the NFL. What's your expectation college? You go man. I got to four years two to four years to go ahead and prove what I got for amount, and then we interface to successful, and if not I go coordinator Gig Okay Ron Rivera. Rodriguez Split mid-fifties yeah, yeah, okay, so rod. Rivera's thinking. What think like you think you go outta probably another five ten years in this profession that I could go sit on a boat. Now a situation where he's going to get a new owner well, does that new owner want to go ahead and just overturn the Apple Cart? No rods, nice rods players love him. Rod is a good dude. Rod has a reputation for being the good dude. You have this pile of burning trash. It was one thing that's not on fire Ron Rivera if I'm the new owner. What's the first thing? I grab Ron Rivera. Everything else I let it sale down the river. Rubber like it is his every relief they got. They got me thinking. Rod Rivera got a sketch pad. He's working all coming up a new voice. Because by the way I think they need to change the name. Obviously you know anything about me. You notice I feel but I also think they need to change it at twenty twenty one. There's no need to do this right now. They are talking about doing. Doing a massive entire rebrand in basically three months, which is the process that typically takes eighteen to twenty four months Gordon. Gar Trail Jerseys that are due to be out there with like whose whose job was to be to try to come up with a new, because clearly, Snyder hadn't thought about this his arrogance and put them in a place that he was not prepared for the inevitability of.

Inside Washington's Name Change

"John How's it? Goin'? It's been a little bit busy. You might be having the busiest off season well, always busy right now to all the deck Prescott stuff, but but you pretty busy. It was on? July six and a couple of things happen. I told my wife said. I'm about to work in eighteen hours a day on July six. NFL. Opposite in what is going on, and it turns out. That was actually probably a pretty good day in hindsight. John covers the Washington DC based NFL TEAM FOR ESPN Since. We are talking about names I. Do feel it's necessary to point out your John Crime I- Amina climbs two different names not. Although I will say had some relatives. Years back did like genealogy, and at one point, it was kind real in Europe, so we could be related I. Just want to put that out there well. I do get mistaken for you. Know I think there's a similarity so. So back to the name at hand. John The Washington football team announced on Monday after much speculation many reports that they will be retiring their nickname and logo after completing review that began on July third. This has been a conversation for a very very long time, but the team's principal owner Daniel. Snyder has been on the record. Saying the team would never in all caps literally change its name, and then here we so before we get to why this happened. And what's GonNa Happen Next? I just want to ask you as a beat reporter. Did you ever think this day would come? Well. Let me let me step back from that pre. George Floyd, no, because in the past. We've had a deal with this topic many times over the years especially in the last seven. I think the rise of social media has kept it alive, but during that time the plan the strategy here for the reds for Washington was to write off the storm. Just weather the storm. Go go to reservations connect with native Americans and do something like that then when you saw the social unrest this year. You started to seep in your head like they're gonNA. Come after them again and I'll tell you when it really really thought they work to be about. Run at this time was. There was a stretch it about a week where George Preston Marshall, who original owner of the of Washington? And he named the team, and he moved the team from Boston, to Washington will statue was outside their old stadium are k. well. They removed the statue, not the team, but a company in DC that owns that land, so you tweet that out and I'd say. Say Ninety percent of the mentions after that on twitter, where about what about the what about the name? What about the name? The next day team says they're going to retire bobby? Mitchell's number only retired one of the number in their franchise history, so they tweet that out and I wrote a story. Put out there. What about the? What about the name? I've. There's just becoming way too much of everything. They did route this. If they put out a statement about George Floyd about black lives matter, it would always come back to their team name. It was to a level that I hadn't seen before. It does seem though at least from the outside that the true catalysts the thing that pushed this over the edge was the teams naming sponsor Fedex and Fedex asiyo. WHO's a minority owner coming out on the record against the name? Yes and I'm going to back up a couple of weeks before that because there some parallel timelines that led to I think this occurrence and one of which was Dan Snyder had reached out I was told by multiple that he had reached out to the League a few weeks before that, and had already started to engage in conversations with the NFL, Roger Goodell about a possible name change along that same time there's the group of eighty seven shareholders and investors were combined six hundred twenty billion dollars in the lead by investor advocacy groups, so they're the ones who targeted Fedex Habsi company Nike Bank of America. It wanders sponsors. If you don't sever your ties here, you know. That's what they want to sever their ties, and so that's what they're pushing. When Fed, ex came out with the statement. That's when when people I've talked to said. That's when they knew it was over. I WANNA to talk about those groups. All of the activists who've been working tirelessly on this for years, but I thought it might be helpful to break down why the name exists in the first place. Where does it come from? The name when it first. Started I guess or was mentioned throughout history was about refer to the color skin and there is. I've got her who worked for the Smithsonian magazine, went back and researched it and found that it was way that native Americans would refer to other to differentiate themselves from. Whites or blacks or whomever else was here, so they referred themselves the redskins than it seemed to segue into a negative connotation, which you know, you'd see posters or read about posters, offering rewards for bringing fifty dollars for bringing the scalp, redskin or bringing Redskin, in which meant the scalp, so it certainly segue into something. That was a negative connotation. So how did it come to be the name of this particular NFL franchise? That's a great question, so we go back to nineteen thirty two and for anybody listening I was not covering the team at that time so nineteen who? Shared a stadium with baseball's Boston braves, so they were called. The Boston braves the following year. They moved to Fenway Park with the Boston Red Sox, so the story that that no his come about from that is that they wanted some sort of. Alliteration with the Red Sox, and so they went with the Redskins, but they also had a coach Lone Star Dietz and several native American players on the roster, George Preston Marshall said he was naming it basically in part because they had a native American coach. Now there's controversy over long star deeds whether he was actually native American up, but that was the given explanation at that time.

A statement by the team said that after a thorough review that began on July 3rd The team would be quote retiring the Redskins name and logo. The team did not announce a new name, and it's unclear exactly when that will happen. Washington's now retired nicknamed dated back to 1933 when the franchise was based in Boston. Native American experts and other critics have long decried the team's name is a dictionary defined racial slur. Owner Daniel Snyder had previously set on multiple occasions that he would never change the team name. Pressure from companies like FedEx, Pepsi and other sponsors appears to have resulted in a 1 80 for Snyder and the franchise. John

Washington DC Football Team Announces It Will Retire ‘Redskins’ Name And Logo

"K. The Washington, Redskins have done it as expected. The redskins name is no more as of today and to some degree. It's clear that owner Daniel Snyder kowtowed. Yielded to the sponsors who did not like the fact that the name was the Redskins, and of course, the native American activists who've been long criticizing it as a racist slur and washed and put out a statement officially today that today we're announcing, we're retiring the Redskins name and logo upon the completion of this review, and it was ninety years after nearly ninety years this effect it came just ten days after the team said it would reconsider the name and after Fedex which spends eight million dollars a year for the naming rights to the Washington Stadium. So they'd back out of the deal if the name was not changed money talks James Money talk us.

"I like Christmas I love like a Daniel Snyder said thanksgiving even if it's new year's day I love all that stuff but I'm a I'm ready I was ready you know yeah I don't know you can only do so much maybe maybe people disagree with me think I'm crazy but I was I was ready problem is it our business we really don't have a holiday now you are to work yeah you're right or okay okay off here and they're great Christmas Eve often new year's day off otherwise I pretty much worked so Daniel Snyder had a happy thanksgiving yep a new year's day I did reach out to Bruce Allen because having the time to have a mom yeah right but I I didn't know I wanted to talk about the current quarterback of the Vikings should I've texted him when you come out and talk about church cousins it's close well brit Bruce screwed it up remember when he was still young was the deciding not to franchise tag over what do they do we couldn't get a ride and Bruce loved on the I think he was instrumental in and it is Kirk it Jenner captain Kirk try Madeleine and drafting him originally because they just weren't sold on RG three but I think he felt so much capital to go get RG three in the very same draft in the fourth round they draft what's his first name again Kurt Kirk but reduced at a press conference worry referred to only as Kurt I live two thousand seventeen yeah because already is and he was still are he was still a red skin yeah yeah boy that's bad this is our goals deciding Kurt to a long term contract with the final objective have his career blah blah blah after the draft made Kurt an offer that I got to get that you click maybe he was just being Kurt he said it how many times well I know you got it does all right the order the cousin of the holiday and the president of franchise tag them twice didn't know his first name yes a team spokesman said it only sounded like Allen was calling cousins by the name Kurt due to Alans accident don't get out what what action a bunch of crap he's from virgin well except dang why he's wow juror gets it right if you can't get Kurt Kurt cadenas name wouldn't matter what Matt let's see by by the way this is three years ago they after like often like fifty three million dollars whatever but if you were getting a really so you have it okay let's say listen this thing after discussions with Kurt this weekend face to face I wanted to Kerr clarify our negotiations for this year Kurt is obviously an important part of our organization is important to our team does acres anymore to know where my stance that's obvious he said twice our come through as well I when I when I checked that about an artist by the quarterbacks after discussions with Kurt you should have done it both ways Quemado there's no accent there nine is it it's as clear as it can be very Curt is that correct with the senior Kerr with a K. okay plus is that the most I mean they say this but is it true it is the most offensive thing someone can do is get your real name wrong right I mean it's it's completely disrespectful if somebody Argive Jack I've always defended you Jack London your back I know I the thing is how when he when he would call them into a meeting he's a quarterback right recesses sit down Kurt I've pissed Kirk cousins all yeah had to be I'm sure they got the the name right on his check yeah I mean if you if you are going to give me like in that case I think he was talking about fifty million dollars which again it wasn't what they should have paid at the time but still if if you do that kind of a thing you can call me whatever the hell you want I don't care but for most people it's a sign of complete disrespect again running when we do interviews I always make sure like how do you pronounce is like Daddy I still probably strong one you're interviewing once for ten minutes in your life and ever talk to him again yeah that's for the back of your team and here the president of the TV keys you know that's not like him hello Bruce will look in the eye and lie the FAA has to but I I don't know why he did it repeatedly and he's a really good public speaker and made his brother was you know governor of Florida Bruce is very politically savvy you know so I that was just shocking to me but the other side of it is Bruce got fired by Daniel yeah I know he's gonna get reassigned I didn't think you would just drop them off at the legs are eager to everybody there was a a bad thanksgiving who's the guy who we had a we had somebody on of recently not recently but with a couple months ago he can call you Bob twice two or three times the that was my mom no that was did not call you Bob that right if you have a great day each it was in the play by play yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it was a dude twice watch the Carolina Panthers that's right mix that it was make Nixon that accent hello Joe I call on you know don Joe makes and she also yeah sorry about that's right Avenue in schools was very unfortunate something that was the band was in it was a funny name of ban all yeah that's right he was a he was like a lead singer of a band you have yet as it was very clever he was actually I mean such a hoot but he's who I think is calling he is funny that happens all the time yeah it's forgettable that way you've got you know what I you know we're not the same division and on a rack with a much this is Bruce the president of the Washington Redskins talking about the quarterback that he's franchise tag so repeatedly any did not his first name cannot get a job which is how you take that would be good when we got it all into did you know you're still gonna take a lot of attacks like do it from my my name is Kirk I mean yeah we're gonna girlfriend's name wrong ever that's in that relationship I've done that I was a name in the middle of the night around or in the throes of passion as for the next day forget her name completely that's not good his with guys you there's you know Hey dude you can you can do stuff like that with our terrible and weak what do you say with that what do you say to a girl or woman a big day big seen them you know if you start doing she champ lad get.
