"It is if they get together and they like publicly make up and they try to diffuse it. But we'll spend another dimension around the speech. I don't know that Chris Rock loses because first of all, hand handle himself as well as he possibly could have. Sexually joke. I'm sure he didn't know. If he knew it was a different thing, but I'm sure he didn't know that she had that condition. So he's got to make that clear. He has to make that clear. And, you know, maybe I don't know, maybe that will maybe that will be what, I don't know, who knows? All I know is a crazy goddamn things I ever saw. And all these people complaining the Oscars are going to be boring. They were wrong. Daniel Kelly and our buddy turned it off about what an hour and end. He's like, okay, that's enough. I'm not watching this. And then we start texting about what was going on. He's like, well, what happened? He said, you know what happened? You fucked up. That's what happened. You should have left the show on. I told my wife took my son to a flag football game tonight. Yeah. And I was texting her and she thought I was kidding. And then I called when I was when they were on the way home. And I was like, can you believe that happened? And she's like, wait, that was a real thing that happened. I just assumed you were kidding. And I'm like, no, we'll walk down the stage and slap Chris Rock really hard. You know, we did a bit last week where we went out on the street and we told people crazy things that celebrities had said before the Oscars. None of them were even close to this crazy as this. That's true. You would have been able to make that up in a writer's meeting. Well, there's a couple other things. So Will Smith gives the speech. Yeah. You know he's going to win. It suddenly becomes the single most anticipated Oscars speech ever. You have no idea. Is he going to apologize? Is he going to acknowledge it? How is he going to play it? And he played it like a guy who was still mad that he had to like, you know, it seems like he's just tired of all the shit he took over the years. And turns it into the Richard Williams thing. And then says this thing about Denzel, how he talks about how Denzel basically calmed him down, but during a commercial and he said, Denzel told me at your highest moment, be careful. That's from the devil comes for you. Right. That was an actual thing Denzel Washington had to say to Will Smith during a commercial break at the Oscars. Very Shakespearean and probably. Seriously. First time the loser of the Oscar was consoling the winner of the Oscar, right? Think of that. It really seems like Denzel was the most important person at all these things. Well, we had, we had Will Smith winning the Oscar. Yeah. And now somehow that got lost, we waited, we've done this guy for 30 plus years. This is supposed to be the highlight of the Oscars tonight, other than us winning our code a bit, which we did. We had coded plus 8 50. Can I tell you something? I shouted loudly to my children. Daddy just won $4250. My daughter thinks that, you know, that's it. Well, I guess I guess we're forever, you know? We get a deal. She was confused and my wife was annoyed that I mentioned this in front of them and they wanted to announce it. We're going to give it all to homeless people. So now we're giving it all the homeless people. So that's still a win. I know, well, sure it is, but. I think a bad message to send to your children, which I was able to quickly at the last moment. Good message. Smart. Well, we had code at plus 8 50. That was the message I cared about. Yeah. And that was your call. And I was all you and I have to say, thank you and congratulations. It's funny. You can make a lot of money doing a lot of stuff. And there's nothing more exciting that betting $500 on a movie that nobody thought would win this picture a month ago. That turned out to be the only major upset. It went the Oscars went chalk, but coda wasn't even upset because by the time it came out today, it was like minus one 60. It start to finish one of the weirdest Oscars. So what happens even ending with the Liza Minnelli thing, which I'm, you know, all due respect to Liza for hanging in there all these years, but I'm not sure she was ready to be on stage. Like that was pretty crazy. But when it was almost over and she announced how excited she did her opening line again. She wanted the second take of it. So what if you're the host? Yeah. What are you doing? So Will Smith walks up and slaps Chris Rock. You're the host. I'm going to the next 20 minutes for you looking like. I am very, very angry if they don't put me on stage after that moment. Now I know there were over and even with kind of cutting all those extra categories. They still went 38 minutes over..

"Who was like, you know that is right, John. Yeah. We like the best kickboxers. And now Don has some hurricane. He's fighting. You pitch more than that woman. He's fighting so it's more than if I came in three seconds. Greg fry. I know, come whatever it's time to come. And she says be nervous. I came at 6 30. That's very thoughtful of you. Greg, you never came early in your life? I think I almost exclusively came early. I don't know. I wouldn't know when coming on time would look like. So, you know, exactly. And I show up. I show up late, but I come early. And so I saw you bust always you're like a big stallion in bed always? Oh yeah, every time steroids help echo and Viagra. Somebody asked me one time why I take Viagra every time I do it and I'm like, have you ever taken Viagra? They're like, no. Try it one. And then see if you see if you keep doing it, it's the best. I did have time one time and kind of felt like low grade ecstasy and really I enjoyed it. I get mine from some guy in India and I make him he texts me all the time trying to sell it. So I make him identify himself as stalker, Texas ranger, like blows me up, or actually, and the shark call himself stalker Indian ranger, which was great. So that's why he hits me up. He's like the stalker Indian ranger. So you don't really know what you're taking. No. It's for one of online pharmacies. I'm sure it's so good. So he's taking heroin and fucking math and Shannon. He's like, I'm like, this is great. You guys haven't tried it? Oh my God. It's like the best feeling ever. But that's what I think he won't take as the vaccine. Dude, I got a story for that. But then I said, I'll trust him. I don't know what's in it. That's a great one real quick. I'm in. So I get the Las Vegas. I realize I've been on blood pressure pill since I was like in college. I don't know for some reason it's genetically a high blood pressure, right? It could be the rage inside the anyway. So I get there, I realize my doctor didn't refill before I left by doctor dele my prescription. So I was like, oh, great, so now I have no blood pressure pills on board to Las Vegas, right? So if you don't take that stuff, the one I take, it will skyrocket your blood pressure once you stop. You know, I've been on it for 20 some years. So my blood pressure is running like two 20 over one 40, which is like stroke level. I go to Walmart there thinking they're gonna help me out because the doctor's office closed over the weekend. And I said, hey, I have a prescription for you guys in Indianapolis. I need blood pressure pills I'm out. My nose is porn blood like every ten minutes. I know sleep like it's not good. You know, like I'm having said it. Like, well, you don't have any refills left on your prescription. And I was like, I know, but I could die. You know what I mean? So I normally go give you one or two, that's given to you to carry you through till your next one, you know? I haven't had before. And they kept telling me, I was not we could do. You can go doctor on demand online. I was like, they don't take my insurance. We'll just go to ER. I'm like, yeah, that's what I want to do. You already get two blood pressures, you know? And pay $10,000. I said, no, I can't. So I'm arguing with them. The lady has the balls to tell me if there's nothing they can do, but we can get you a COVID shot if you want your vaccine while you're here. We have those available. Like she was so worried about my health. I'm at stroke level nosebleeding. I'm not worried about that, but I can get my vaccine on there, you know? Like that was her consolation. I loved it. She was no, but you could get your vaccine if you wanted if you haven't had it. Okay. I don't know. I actually agree with Dana White. They asked Dana White about what Joe Rogan how the 270 doctors that came out against Joe Rogan and he's like, dude, data got COVID, did exactly what Joe Rogan told him to do. And was fine in two days, right? And now you can't get what those pills that they took. But you can get all kinds of painkillers. He's like, those will actually kill you. And I got to agree. I mean, it's like, I don't know. To me, I disagree with, I disagree with Dane on that one because it's not easy to get painkillers. You can tell Donald like that. I get it. Yeah. But yeah, they just assume automatically that you're a drug addict and won't give you shit. Yeah, well, I was in Mexico last week, bro, you go to any pharmacy in Mexico. You can get anything. I mean, anything. That's why people go to Mexico. It's crazy. I mean, I didn't get anything, but you could. All right, so eagle FC, January 28th. You know Sergio carotene off Shaun? Yeah. The heavyweight you mean? Yeah, he's fighting Tyrone. Yeah. Who's that fight? Tyron sponge, Sergei. Oh, man. Probably if he takes him down. He's a lot bigger than spawn. Spawn is not a very big guy. He's a better stand up fighter obviously than carrot tonna. Dodger, Nokia, tunnel from the pride day. He pulled over there. I think same time, but it could be in his 40s mid 40s I would think. I don't know. I'm trying to he's like still needed for some reason. I think probably because I wind tunnel. His last fight, he lost Chicago. I think he was winning that fight and then he something happened. He was kicking his ass and he lost. He lost to letting the cell. He beat Matthew. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. He was a he knocked out Roy Nelson, lost to Josh Barnett and the strike force Grand Prix. Yeah, he's fought Arlovski. He not got Arlovski. That should be a good fight. They have tyrosine listed at two O. Again, a guy who's 32 and 9. So spawn had like a hundred kickboxing fights, though. Yeah. He is nasty standing up, man. That guy hits hard standing up. Then they got Gabriel seco. Who's a good fighter? Especially if he's on my head. Against Rashad Evans. Oh man, I hope Rashad wins, but I'm worried about him in this one. I just, his last couple of fights were rough, but I don't know why he's fighting again to you. That's really awesome. Why is he fighting you? He says he misses that he says he still has that urge to fight. He misses it and if that's the case that he can be a very dangerous man. You know, if he's actually, if that's the case, it was fighting because he needs money, then that's a different thing. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, he's got a great desk job at the UFC. And he's lost one, two, three, he's lost 5 fights in a row. Starting with Ryan Bader, Glover, Daniel Kelly, Sam alvey, and Anthony Smith. He's fighting chuck who's mostly a jiu-jitsu guy. Good for a shot, but I still worry about it. I mean, check out. Rashad Evans is fighting Gabriel Chico. An eagle FC and Khabib's thing. And then Anthony. And then also tyron sponge is fighting Sergio, carotene off. You know him? No. You know, yeah, Carol connell, you know him. He fought and pride. You got to know him. He's been around for 5 years. Heavyweight. Heavyweight, Sergei carrano. On the blond? Yeah. Yeah, with diabetes. Yeah. Yeah, I used to be great. Tyron spong. I don't know they never fought with the beret on, but if he did, I would like to see that fight. And then my buddy Anthony Andrea is fighting that should be awesome. John Howard, who's I think the first to fight it of openly have autism, first male. Before his fighting career. He's fighting ramazan. Korra maggot of. Again, Adam, Adam overlooking Shaw, but okay..

"His family. Thank you for bringing it up. Because mark york should be recognized for the tremendous work that he did and it is a great loss. All right in the episode. With jennifer fisher. It's possible that she and i may have briefly. Mentioned an idea that steve had for an office reunion. So daniel kelly says how do you let her. Drop that. Info about steve's idea and bury it like. Oh yeah. I've heard steve's idea like the world knows what you speak and brushed aside like the crumbs of cookie Look first of all it. Steve's idea if steve wants to talk about his idea. That isn't a reality at this moment. Then steve can't. Let's just say that the idea does happen. What would you wanna know. Wouldn't you want to be surprised. And if you don't wanna be surprised. I can tell you this. Nbc wants you to be surprised so neither nor myself. He's going to reveal steve's idea i'm very sorry but the point was there is an idea. And it's really good sean. H. m. talks about wanting well very specific new episode dude. We're loving the podcast. But you know what we also want an episode where we talk to brian and get to know everything kevin. We can't wait to hear you. Tell us everything about your character. You know that is an idea sean. It has been talked about a little but not for a while. So who knows but who would talk to me or would i have to talk to myself and would that be a disaster. I don't know thank you for the input. It is dis- it has been discussed so we'll see you can take total credit if we end up doing that. Drew papu us. I'm sure that's wrong. Writes this podcast. Bring so much joy to my work commute. You're the man at bb baumgartner. You're damn right. I am drew pooches. And because you said that. I'm really sorry that i butchered your name which i definitely did So steve and i talked about the director sandwich which is when a director compliments and actor then tells them what they're doing terribly wrong and then gives them another compliment to soften the blow so michael george rights. I had to laugh when you were talking about the director sandwich. Because i'm a teacher and we do it to usually an e mails to kids parents. We call it a shit sandwich. Glad to know they do it other places. Nothing made me laugh harder. Maybe throughout this entire podcast. Recording experience than steve talking about the director sandwich. Because it's so true. And now i'm going to need to go and look back at emails from teachers about my kids and see if i can find to shit sandwich there and if there is well it probably means my kid. Did something wrong reverend. Beebe which is not me to be very clear. Here's my question because i'm curious. Was it always the intent to do both podcasts. or was it just. Hey we have all of this useful stuff left. Let's do it. Great question reverend beebe. It was always my intention. Yes from the very beginning. The first person we interviewed was rain. Wilson and i had even brought it up before then like i think. We're gonna want what we're going to get more material than we want because an oral history of the office was My math is bad. But let's say eight to ten hours Something like that. And i sat down our very first interview with rain wilson. We sat down for over. Two hours and immediately was like whoa. We can't use all of that. And he said so many amazing things so yes. It was always our intention to release more of the full conversations because we knew we had way more or we were going to get way more than what we needed for an oral history of the office. But thank you for the question. Joe bangles rights to me on twitter. Random question but do you have a favorite cheese chatter from wisconsin going to eleven rights to me regarding the steve carell episode. I love this episode. My wife has a theory on why young people love the office. It helps them feel less intimidated about being working adults. Just because you are a professional doesn't mean you have it all figured out. They recognized personalities from school in the show. I think i think. I think you're on to something going to eleven. I think you're going to eleven or you're going to a hundred or whatever the biggest number would be. That's very interesting. yeah. I not specifically thought about being less intimidated seeing people who work in an office later on not not kind of having it all together and figured out. But that's i think that's a very very interesting theory. And yes i do. Think recognizing personalities from their other classmates and the structure of class versus. The office was so similar like an unreasonable teacher. Who makes you do unreasonable. Things very similar from michael scott making his office workers do unreasonable things. Laura be harsh field sir beck rights. I will say my eleven year. Old son knows every episode and what season finds all the mistakes. and little extras. I have missed. I asked him why he likes it. And it's because the characters talk about real life and he thinks it's real. He knows it's not really a documentary. But it's what he thinks. Being adult and working is like which shows how great the show was done. Well laura all i can tell you is. It is indeed what we were going for. The reality This sort of ultra reality of Not just making a documentary or how. A documentary was shot but in terms of the behaviors and interactions of the characters. So thank him for watching and for being so interested and Thank you for clearly. Raising a great son and fan of the show. Kristen she he writes. I'm loving the podcast. Currently going through chemo. And the office and your podcast has provided me with so much joy during this difficult process. God bless you kristen. I hope you get better soon. And thank you for listening and for watching and again. i'm. I'm so glad that us crazy. Band of nut heads have given some relief to what you are going through. Pam jill from the randall. Einhorn episode rights. What does he key grip slash grip do well they grip it and a key grip. I mean clearly grips the key. I think bc. Jim dad rights brian. Did you just hear aaron rodgers in the match. Tell charles barkley if you just beat brian. Baumgartner in tahoe he'll be happy yes. I did hear that. And i attempted after being sent the clip of it from tahoe where i was getting ready to play where he wasn't. I did attempt to communicate. Because i felt like i was brought up on air. I should have a chance to respond. So i attempted to contact. Charles barkley and aaron rodgers and well not really antique. Because i didn't know how to get a hold of anybody there. But i tried to be able to respond. They ignored phone calls. So nothing unusual about any of that. Robert mccarthy forty two rights. I'd love to know some storylines that just missed making it into the office. There must have been a bunch of great ones. Ps love the podcast. Thank you robert. The one that springs to mind. I know we talked about or were about to talk about on an episode pet day. Pet day was actually to my knowledge. The only written script that we never did there was a fully written script. And i think it just kind of get kept getting pushed and wasn't done. There may have been some animal activists that would not have been happy about that episode. I don't specifically remember the content but pet day was the title and there is a written episode of the office that i read at some point very early on that has never ever been produced veggie the memer rights just a question. What is your favorite scene. You've ever played as kevin malone by the way you're my favorite actor person in the series well veggie. You're amazingly smart number one to my favorite scene ever. I mean. i guess. I'm supposed to say the chili. Seen to be my answer. So i can say that or i can answer differently. The scene with amy ryan at the vending machine where she is counting money into my hands. that's the one that i remember being for me the most difficult to not laugh because of her sincerity and sweetness and how it was written her performance. All of it I remember that scene. And then now that i'm thinking even more maybe the basketball. I mean i made thirteen in a row and primetime and who's done that. Not not many people ever have done network. Primetime made thirteen in a row from the free. Throw line extended. So that's a possibility as well. Nick hamby on apple. Podcasts writes a great podcast. Love the podcast. I've watched the office forty four times through during my wife's pregnancy. We watched it so much that the first song that my son reacted to the intro to the office loved the show and pod. Great well nick. You might win. I don't know forty four times is a lot of times. I don't know that i could count that. I will tell you a funny story. Billy irish who we talked to told us at the time That we talked she had watched it. Fourteen times through there is some discussion. She has watched it at least one more time since but fourteen times through and i remember writing about that on social media and i can't tell you the number of comments that i got that was like fourteen emitter. She's not a real fan. And i'm like fourteen. Times is a lotta times like you got. You can't dismiss fourteen times as an as a number of times so but forty four nick. Congratulations you are officially as of this moment in time. You're the highest watcher. That i have heard of so congratulations. And i say over forty five. It's a way way better number and there you have it folks. Another mailbag in the well in the back huge. Thanks to all of you guys for coming back week after week and and forgiving us well giving us the fuel to make this episode. I could not ask for a better group of listeners. "That Briana Noble and Kaylie all about earnings. On the auto companies, which can seem kind of dry, But this is very, very real. I think we're living through something kind of an automotive agony and the ecstasy. These companies are doing very well financially despite the chip shortage in the hit to inventories, but they were given the trends and what we're being told this could get worse before it gets better. I wanted to, and I wanted to bring into the conversation. Laura Heston, the esteemed producer here at W. J. R. Um what do you think, Kaylie and or Briana? Take a stab at what do you think this is going to mean for consumers? I mean, if if Jim CeBIT is having a fraction, or 1/10 of what he normally would have in terms of vehicles. At some point, these guys are gonna get close to zero R thing. Actually, I'm sorry, Daniel. Both ladies have dropped. I can get them back on if you'd like me to. But, you know, I can't talk about this. If you'd like, Sure. Go ahead. I mean, I'm just getting back on the line. Sure. Okay. Okay. I'll let you know another So, um, uh, e think one of the real big questions here we need to understand is, uh, this is something we've never seen before. And I think this is you put this under the rubric of of unintended consequences of the pandemic. This is revealing how how fragile supply lines for certain components are, uh, in this case, microchips. On what and that are needed in the vehicle and that they're dependent on just a small number of producers largely in Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Politicians are starting to wake up to this in Washington. Um And, uh, and starting to think about Do we need to try incentivize investment in, um, policies here in Washington that can Maintain these vehicles and maintain the supply lines. I think it's gonna be a real key key issue. Daniel Kelly is back. Haley. How you doing? What is this going to do? What does this mean when Jim see, but says he should normally have 200 vehicles, and he's got 20 or 1/10 of that. What's this mean for consumers? Well, what it means is that if you want a certain type of vehicle, good luck trying to get it. I mean, um it's definitely limits. You know the types of trims that they have available and you may just have to settle for something different from what you originally wanted. Not only that, you'll be paying a higher price you mentioned Some of the average transaction prices and I just got some data this morning from Cox. And like you said, the Cadillac was, I believe he pulled a pro fast 61,000. So it's for the average transaction price and Chevy was over 40,000. So as you can imagine, it's pretty expensive to buy a car right now. So this means that new car buyers this mean the new car buyers are the disproportionately well more well off and used car. I mean, I had an instance where used car I had a dealer told me that they're dying for used cars. On. I think In part, it's because because of price is right. Yeah, that used car prices are actually Jim. When I talked to him yesterday, he mentioned that as well. And he said that by it's just they're just astronomically high right now, um And still because he has fewer new cars he's having from his new car salesman, so used cars and they started out with a can't remember this specific numbers and he was like 30 years cars and they end up selling like 85 with the end of the month, so they somehow pulled a rabbit out The hat found an extra 50 years. Cars themselves, Um, just to make up. You know the fact that they don't have the new vehicles on the watch yourself. So e was just gonna ask you sky as that, you know, dealing for saying that used cars at auction. They're going for $4000 above what they normally would, And so many of them are are just trying to get as many as they can so that they have vehicles to sell because some people are being pushed into the used car market, especially if With the develop Bility that's out there. That's really kind of exposes. A lost opportunity doesn't mean if you look at these numbers of these companies and and how well they're doing, imagine what they would be doing. 18 million units are and they had more choice and higher equipped vehicles. Thies numbers would even be a lot higher and think about, you know the old him before you guys were covering this industry. But the old GM and the old Chrysler when faced in a situation like this Uh, you know, a decade or more ago. This would have been a cataclysmic right, but they're going through this, and they're still making Really good money and really good margins, right? Yeah, I think that there's but, um, you know, just being in that point. I want to talk to Jim yesterday didn't see that from Village board, he said. No, he He knows that people have money is thundering now and if he had the vehicles, he would be selling all of them, but they don't have the vehicles. So it's frustrating for dealers when they know that there's my baby had, but they you know Can't make it because they don't have have the majority to sell. They don't have a lot of options now, do they? I mean, they just got to keep mixing and matching and trying to keep things not getting any chips. Um, yeah. I mean, I didn't really provide Lee. Do you have this really provide, like, you know, estimates of like how many chips were getting in and like, where? How That's looking. But they're getting obviously they're getting in as they get in ships there. Parking some vehicles, and they're adding those chips in when they get them. And the chips situation is is, um, you know, it's very dynamic because it's so deep in the supply chain so they don't have released previously. They didn't have, like a line of sight that I think that they would have wanted on it. And I think they're getting better at that. Don't know Briana would agree. Yeah, No, that was something that Richard Palmer, the chief financial officer explains. This really emphasized that's being worked on right now is act increasing visibility that because these semi conductors, their bidding, being, um Put into component so being assembled so there it's so deep into the supply chain that traditionally the automakers haven't had insight into. That status story sort of being forced to get more involved in that, um and right now, the focus for them has been priority, sizing the in demand and most profitable. Profitable vehicles. That's why you're seeing some plans go down and others they keep up because they're conserving the chips that would go and, you know, um Products that don't sell as well as others and putting us in high demand products. Well, Kaylie increasing everything. I'm sorry, Briana. Go ahead. Yeah, I was just gonna say And that's what's also contributing to the increase is an average transaction Prices as well. "Someone who I don't know has david fincher juan. Before as he or is he one of those at snub. I want to say that he's been snubbed. Without looking it up. I think he has not won. So i feel like this might be like a martin as type thing right right. Yeah i feel like Possibly he might win for For mink which. I love david fincher and i don't know if you should win for this one but if there's a time to give it to him maybe they're gonna think it's this time okay. Yeah that's fair. I'm gonna go with should win and will win for closure for nomad lands. I definitely see your point. Though with the the david fincher thing. I could see the academy doing that kind of thing but yeah i think it's clue as your though. I think. I think that she's got this one locked up and as we've been seeing these things don't always mean anything but all of the awards and all that stuff. They've all gone to her. And i just i think it would be crazy if she loses but i guess we will find out but what is something that you think should have been nominated again. I'm going to say Charlie kaufman that movie is just. It's just so good I know the story is just. I guess he suffers from just being too out there sometimes and maybe at face value people. What was that. I don't like it. But i think just every viewing you realize how much how good it is. And so i feel like his directing and also the writing is sometimes overlooked And not appreciated so. I loved like how he what he did in that movie so i feel like he should have got nominated as well. Yeah i i love it. I love it so much however not my pick for the should be as much as i love charlie kaufman. I do think that the movie is a little bit four. Charlie kaufman may maybe for the hardcore fans. One thing i one thing i noticed about twenty twenty there's a lot of amazing Debut films lot of first time filmmakers and one of them that i think would have been great to nominate was doria smarter. Sound of metal. That film is just so amazingly put together and just the way that tells the story in a way that's like unique and and it really is just firing on every cylinder from the from the sound design to the acting to the story to everything that comes together in that film I just think is just done. So expertly and Just one of the year's best so let's move on to the acting categories and we'll start off with supporting actress. We have maria. Buck lova for borat subsequent movie film glenn close for hillbilly elegy. Olivia colman for the father. Amanda see freed for mink and you-zhong yawn for monari Who do you think should win. And who will win. Who should win. I have to go with my clean Olympia coleman i mean. She's already one. But i feel like she should be up there with those two time. Oscar winning actress is i think she would probably be I don't know how many there are. But maybe julia roberts and meryl streep's won a few. So i think she's just as good and i feel like she should get it But i think will win. I think i would not be mad about this either maria back. I mean she's one some of the words leading up to this. And i don't know i think if you do that type of movie and what she had to go through. You deserve it as well. So i won't be. I won't be mad with either of those that would be great if she won I i agree with your should win. Livia coleman definitely is who should win in my opinion as far as will win. I'm going to go with the man to see freed from bank. I just think that she see it. Seems like the performance that would get awarded especially in a supporting Supporting category it just feels like the thing that would win to me and i have nothing more than that to say other than just it feels like it's gonna win but do you think should have been nominated. Yeah oh there is a lot of is hit to make up my mind. I wrote like a bunch of them. And then i'm league. How about you go first. And then i'll. I'm going to finalize my sure. Sure well my my pick. I think should have been nominated for this. This was definitely a little bit of a tough one for me. They're like you said there's a lot of great performances this year but once i thought like felt like they would actually get nominated. It was kind of a little bit tough to pick from I'm gonna go with olivia cook for sound of metal. Obviously i loved this movie so much and i love olivia cook. I mean everything that i've seen her in. I just think that she is such a great actress. One of the best young actresses working right now. And i just think it's such a strong and varied performance throughout the the time line of the film itself. And there's just so much to the character. And i just think that this would be a great place to Actually start recognizing her for the great work that she's putting in. Yeah i did have her on my list because The sound of metal. Like i don't know. I it was it was like she was in in the whole time when she did. I kind of longed for her. I mean rhythm. Ed is very good. I am not saying that. I didn't like watching him but like she was very captivating. Onscreen have to say. And i i. She's one of those actors. Like i've seen her before and i had to like liquor 'cause like where where was it but i remember she kind of stands out and everything she does Somebody kind of piggyback off. You say that one to kinda help narain on it that that works for me I let's move onto best supporting actor. We've got sasha baron cohen for the trial of the chicago seven daniel kelly for judas in the black messiah. Leslie odem junior for one night in miami paul receiver sound of metal and lakeith stanfield for judas and the black messiah. Who do you think should win. And who will win should win is lakeith stanfield. I stand by my pick. I i've i when i saw that movie I know daniel daniela. Performance is the one getting more of the hype. I think but for me what lakisha is with subtle and it's really hard to pull off like that internal struggle And i feel like daniel clue reforms. Obviously with fred hampton. It was more showy in our very good because when they show that clip at the end. And if you see those interviews. It's like it was uncanny. But i have to say that. Like i don't know something about the heat's performance of of really Like what that guy had to go through you know like what is character to go through and you can't show ally you know because it's like he can't give away what he's doing and so. I really hope that like he should win. I feel in my opinion. Who will win. I think it's going to be Daniel colusa just. Because i mean he's equally as great and i think maybe they're they're he's probably gonna get it and he has been winning up to this so Those are two my two picks. And i won't be mad about either like yeah my guy and i hope he wins. Yeah the i. I love lakeith to he. He he's awesome. I think it's kinda weird i mean. I think all of us think is kind of weird that he's up for supporting actor when it should be best actor but that's a whole nother story and who knows how these things work out the way they do. But i wanna go is should win for paul racy for sound of metal which. I'm just so excited that he is even nominated. I did not expect it to happen. But we'll win. Definitely daniel coup the performance to be and it is you know appropriately. Great and i will not be mad at all of you. Wins this one What do you have for.

Harassment in Online Gaming

"Over two billion people play games globally in the US sixty four percent of online population play video games in games a much more than just games live. MULTIPLAYER Games are social platforms forms where people interact chat and sometimes get harassed. According to a poll made for the Untidy Formation League in two thousand eighteen Americans reported only gaming as the fifth place where the experienced harassment online just after facebook. Luke twitter youtube an instagram. Welcome to good code the weekly podcast on ethics in our digital lives. My name is Sheila Eh. I'm a visiting journalist at Cornell Tax Digital Life Initiative and I'm your host a few weeks ago. I sat down with Daniel Kelly in his office office in New York City. He's the associate director of the Center for Technology and society within the Anti Defamation League he leads the center's work to fight hate bias and harassment in online gaming to be clear he's job is not to look at the contents of video games he studied side conversations. That gamers have with one another wild plane. I began by asking him to explain where exactly these conversations happen. This is a question that I get a lot especially for people who aren't familiar with these kinds of conversations which is sometimes Parents right right when you're talking about communications online games. They can happen usually in two places so the one place would be an text chat so that would be a chat box that usually lives at the bottom of your screen and you can type in different words and you know dialogue. Often people communicate that way. They're playing playing as they're playing. They are if they're on a PC. They're typing if they're if they're on an xbox or playstation they could be there could be shortcuts or there or they could be typing in with their with their control or other things and for those cotton's of communications. You can use the same. A well trod techniques for detecting Abuse that you can use on facebook twitter you have the same model of being able to use machine learning or AI and human review to we able to flag content. There's sort of a baseline to start from in terms of the content. Moderation that happens there the area which is much more of a wild west which exists in games and and in some maybe perhaps live streamed social media But is a big part of games is voice chat so in addition to people typing in some things that they say to people people are actually speaking to each other stranger. They're speaking to each other again as they're playing as they're playing commencing on what's happening. Yeah exactly commenting on what's happening openings. Sometimes being competitive sometimes crossing the line into being hateful and sometimes being you know supportive and encouraging and engaging with with the people as as they're playing the game but when we talk about voice chat the methods to do content moderation in live voice chat are super nascent. And and so. There's a real need. I think to push research and advocacy forward for that because as bad as things can be in the text environments we don't even have the framework to address them in or the tools to address them in voice chat. And so yeah. We'll get back to that. That's something I want to ask. Ask You about Just to understand do most gamers take part in these chatrooms Whether text are vocal is that is that like a wide. I practice the AARP which is an organization that is geared towards Folks who are fifty plus did a survey of Gamers who are art fifty plus and they've found that thirty three percent of Gamers who are fifty plus who play online play with other adults play in in a way that they're communicating with the people they're playing with and so if you can imagine that you know a third of Of older adults are are communicating. When they're playing these games? I don't know there's been a similar measurements of other age groups but I could imagine that the the amount the degree to which if it's part of their game plan part of the way they interact in and see the platform would would be significantly more. I think at the game developers conference in March of last year the CEO of epoch which makes fortnight which is a very popular game talked talked about fortnight and games like it being sort of forms of social media that the folks who are playing these are playing them as games in of themselves but they also are means to build community and to connect with one another. And you know these sort of continuous free to play. Online Games are a form form of social media social platform yet social platforms. And they're places where people are communicating regularly. Our focus right now is really Focused on games as social platforms there. I think there's been a lot of good work in Games as media looking at games in the same way that you you might look at movies in terms of a representation. whose stories are being told? How has that story being told but I at least in the sort of NGOs space this and certainly in the sort of traditional historical civil rights organization space? There hasn't been as much work looking at games as social spaces. uh-huh you were at rights con last year. Which is one of the biggest Tree conferences on human rights and technology and there was no workshop on gaming and that you were surprised prices. Do you think that's changing that people are realizing that Games are social platforms. Is that slowly taking into consideration thing. I I think you know. I think it is starting to become more of a consideration. There's just a lot of educating on both on both sides from the gaming industry and from civil society about how how do we find a way to work together But I think yeah. I think it's urgent. A game industry is larger than film and music combined In terms of the amount out of money that it makes so this is a an urgent space for folks to be looking at there are people who are specifically in the game space. That are focused on us. But it hasn't yet. I think permeated the larger discourse in the same with the social media has for large NGOs. I share. Let's get into the report you rotor a report in July two thousand nineteen. That was cold free to play hate harassment and positive social experiences in line gaming. And you we'll get into the details of it. I you start your report by saying something quite positive which was surprising. The first result that you shares at eighty eighty eight percents of adults who play online those multi-player Games In the US report positive social experiences while playing online and there is even a non trivial amount of US adults who report positive experiences in online should gain so probably some of the most violent when so this is sort of counter intuitive even silver lining to start a report on harassment Shuzo. Why why why was it important to have that at the beginning? We're still in kind of a moral panic place with games James In the way that perhaps we were with comic books in the fifties where something terrible happens in the world that everyone wants to blame it on video games and so my experience talking to folks about these issues has been that when you start from this place of video games are bad. People who are are working in the space with Love Games who games are part of their identity part of how they interact socially it just shuts them down and I. I don't think it's a path towards change. If if you just say that x form of media all books are terrible right. Miguel necessarily say that and so it was important for me. The report port is focused on games as social spaces so both the positive side of things and and I think it was unclear as when we ask these questions rate we we wanted to get to some level of understanding of our game online game spaces are are they as bad as you know people the worst of the worst say hey they are right. I think some folks pleasantly surprised that that there were so many people who had positive experiences is no measurement and because there is this a reactive mode to video games. I wanted to start from a place of like. There are many positive experiences that people have in online games and there's also reality of negative experiences that need to be engaged with be dressed because then it opens the conversation of. How can we fix this? Not just get rid of those
