"NFL roundup Saturday preview. I'm Dave ferry. Fresh off a biweek, the eagles and chiefs are back on the field Saturday and her favorites to advance to the conference championship games. Come down to it. This opportunity and shouldn't be worried about what you did in the past or it doesn't help it doesn't hurt. You got to execute and that's what we find. The Giants were riding high at 7 and two before a two 5 and one finish dropped them to the 6th seed, but New York advanced in the wildcard as Daniel Jones threw for 301 yards and ran for 78 yards in the 31 24 downing of the Vikings. But he faces another challenge playing in front of the hostile eagle fans. It's a divisional game. I think that brings some intensity to it and yeah, I mean, they're known for having a good crowd that supports their team and yeah, so we're prepared for it. We've played there. Coach Brian debal says Jones has grown in his four NFL seasons, although this is their first year together. Dave ball sees Jones as a calming influence who is far removed from the player who went 12 and 25 in his first three years. Players looked to him because he is that consistent voice consistent message and consistent player, how he practices, I think, consistent is probably the best word to use. On paper, the chief's Jaguars game appears to be a potential mismatch, and Jags coach Doug Peterson knows their margin for error is small. For us, it's just a matter of just staying disciplined and trusting what we're doing. And just understand your role within your game plan, right? And just execute each play one at a time. Peterson was a backup quarterback when Reid was head coach of the eagles. And he also was a member of Reid's coaching staff. Reed has been impressed by Jacksonville's improvement this season. They've improved every week, and they have bought it. Doug's done a great job as his coaches have. It takes everybody. So, but he's a nice job with her. A 27, 17 loss in Kansas City left the Jaguars three and 7, but Jacksonville won 6 of its last 7 to win the AFC south, then turned to 27, nothing deficit into a 31 30 win over the Chargers in the wild card round. They advanced to the divisional round despite four first half interceptions by Trevor Lawrence, who also threw for four touchdowns and leading the comeback. I think we scored every drive in the second half, didn't pun again. So, I mean, that's huge, obviously, gives us confidence, and you don't want to do that, but to be able to win a game like that is really, really special. Lawrence has put up good numbers, throwing for 4113 yards and 25 touchdowns. But chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes put up historic numbers, racking up 5250 passing yards and 41 touchdowns for the NFL's number one scoring offense. But the playoffs are an elevated brand of football, according to mahomes. I think you build up for this all season long. The regular season you take it week by week, but you want to be here in the playoffs and you know you're going to play the best football teams in the league and that's what you want to do as a competitor. And so I'm excited to get to go up against a great football team at arrowhead. That's always a good time. As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings had the chiefs at 9 point favorite while the eagles were giving 7 and a half points. He's the third QB in NFL history to have at least 300 passing yards in 75 rushing yards in a playoff game. He joins Lamar Jackson and Steve Young in that category. Jones is the only one among this group that also had multiple touchdown passes. He's the only QB that won the game. That's the most important stat. A Dan, what did you like about the giant's game plan on offense first of all? Daniel Jones was impressive, but his head coach and play caller Mike Kafka were evenly equally impressive. And I know what I'm about to say, but my Kafka reminds me of a young Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan the way he attacks defense. Oh. And not just calls play. So this is 21 personnel, two backs, one tight end. Bunch to the top, balls on the bottom, right hash, okay? Now they're gonna motion that tight end over. Now when I set that bunch, that's a nickelback. We call them little people, okay? And then the jet motion is gonna come so I take a bunch from the top and make it a bunch at the bottom. I'm gonna pull the center and that left tackle. Remember, the nickel is the guy that's left up top. I'm gonna kick this ball to saquon. Now I have big body blocking little body, big blocking body, blocking little body. That is a great play design for the saquon touchdown. Now we go down into the red zone, 12 personnel, two tight ends are up top. What I'm gonna do is pull my left tackling left guard. I'm gonna ball fake and I'm gonna go counter saquon. Now watch Patrick Peterson 'cause those two tight ends are one two counting. They switch release the inside guy goes outside. Patrick follows the outside guy down and that's Daniel Bellinger for a wide open touchdown. Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan to me are like the greatest formation manipulators personnel managers. Mike Kafka is becoming that. The way they use their 21 person all the way, they used Matt Breda as a wide receiver multiple times. And honestly, I watched and I was like, man, are you saquon? The same way San Francisco uses Christian McCaffrey when it comes to the variants of touches. As great as Daniel played, and he was great. The coaching by New York right now is special. Yeah, I think obviously it starts at the top with Brian Dave, got to be a favorite for coach of the year. It wasn't just the offense, though, Marcus. What did you like defensively with the Giants? Do I ever been to a monster truck rally? I came to monster truck here. Years ago. That's what the good times defensive line looked like. Past the trucks. Okay. 'cause they are so physical and they get after the passer and the great thing that wing Martin, we Martin Dillon, defense core data for the New York Giants in case y'all don't know. He loves the blitz. He loves to bring more people than you can block. Well, you don't have to. When you have brute force on the defensive line, you can commit four guys to getting after the passer, and they gave co cousin problems all night. But I love the fact that when you look at the Giants play, defensively and offensively, one, they play complimentary football, but they know exactly who they are defensively. Our dominant unit on this side of the ball is our defensive line. We gonna lean into that and make everyone behind them jobs easier. That's why you get a fourth and 8 and a pressure on Kirk Cousins without having to send an extra pressure and you tell your guys, look, tackle on the back end, it's gonna come out. The grave digger. Next Dolores. Next door. I like that. Completely took over this football. I don't think it can be understated enough rewatching how dominant he was rushing from the nose. I love what you say. He's one of the three best defenses of the league, I would say. So you talked a little bit about Wink Martindale, slide dog. Blitzing on only 20% of drawbacks, second lowest of the season. They got punished for blitzing the last time these teams met. The other thing he did was they played a ton of quarters in this game. We were talking about this earlier. Basically just sitting on everything and then tackling. And that's what struck me. You know, they had Xavier McKinney back in this game and a Dory Jackson. If you would ask me for the season, I would have said, this giant secondary is maybe the worst in the NFL. They have improved so much. They were limiting every Minnesota pass catcher after the catch, and that's a big part of the reason why they always do because I want a dope stat. Yeah, sure. Don't stand, all right? Okay. When Justin Jefferson goes over 90 yards. Yeah. The Minnesota Vikings scored 28 points a game. There are ten and one on the season. When he's held under 90, there are three and three and they average 18 points a game. Dope. That was dope. Who got you that? 8. Also. You said you said that Don martindell makes you call him dawn. And so you play well. Wink wink until you're a ball. But we got somebody who bowled up here, so we'll call him wink and we're calling that for this reason. We did some good things today. And it's a bad thing today, you know? Some stuff to clean up some things to learn from. But we'll grow from it. It's all all that matters of surviving and advancing. Both Stefan Diggs and Gabe Davis went over a hundred yards receiving. Dolphins had the ball late with a fourth and one at midfield. That's when they took a delay of game penalty. It was awesome, unfortunately we couldn't come out with a win because I felt like our team fought really, really hard today. You could tell there was no quit. Sam humbert's 98 yard touchdown return of a Tyler Huntley fumbled with 1139 to go in the fourth quarter snapped to 17 all tie as the Bengals hung on to beat the ravens 24 to 17. Credit to Logan Wilson punching it out and just being the right place right time. Got a few blocks along the way and I was just worried about getting tracked down and I'm glad I made it to the end zone. Joe burrow threw for a touchdown and ran for another while Raven quarterback Tyler Huntley threw for two scores, but he was also intercepted. His last second pass on fourth down with no time left fell incomplete. The wild card round concludes with the Buccaneers hosting the cowboys. Dallas earned four more wins during the regular season, but Tampa Bay gained home field by winning its division at 8 and 9. Bucks quarterback Tom Brady is seeking an 8th Super Bowl title and knows what it'll take to win on Monday. You're gonna have to make the plays at the end. And it's tough because there's good teams and there's little margin of air. And all these teams are well coached. I got good offenses, good defenses. They got a lot of good playmakers. Those are the best teams that are playing right now and you've got to play good if you want to if you want to advance. Brady is 7 or all time versus the cowboys. Cowboys quarterback dak Prescott is still chasing his first Super Bowl title and has lost three of his four playoff starts. So there's a sense of urgency. We've got to win, obviously every playoff game you go into it, thinking you've got to win, but having the past experiences I've had in the playoffs just understanding the team that we have, what we're capable of doing, being on the road, just know that we got to go in. 'Feels like a loss': Commanders don't know how to feel after tie vs. Giants
"The Giants and commanders finished in a 2020 tie after seesaw game between two teams bat for playoff spots. Washington jumped out to an early ten zero lead, but the Giants behind Daniel Jones bounced back and held a 2013 lead late in the game before the commander scored a touchdown with just under two minutes remaining to even the score. It's not a loss. It's not a win either, so I think you understand that part of it, but I think just disappointed that we could have could have played better. They would go wide and it's like, well, that thing's gonna be 20 rows back, and holy cow. Now it was a can of corn. I thought it was gone, messed up, like that's the way it would always go. "When I heard those comments and I think that's been my approach to make sure we're in a different situation going forward. Well, I mean, how has David provided the stability that Mara said he wanted? And again, I know it's just two games in and you got a huge Monday night against the cowboys, but it's been several weeks since he's months since he's been there and you were rehabbing a neck injury. How did that how is David brought that stability in your estimation, Daniel? Well, I mean, I think he just brought up these broad energies brought a confidence and I think guys feel that and guys respond to that well. So it's been a competitive culture here. I think that was one of the big things he wanted when he brought in and he was clear with us that we wanted a competitive culture where we were out competing every day at practice and pushing each other to get better. So I think that's been a big part of his goal for us. And what about you, Daniel? I mean, there's so many so much question about your tenure in New York and your future there. How have you been compartmentalizing this whole process? Yeah. Well, I mean, I think at the end of the day, it's about winning games. I think it is really the truth. It's not just cliche that if we win games at all, take care of itself and that's kind of been my focus. So as the quarterback, I've got a job to do in a job for this team. So I feel like if I put the team in a position to win games and things will work out. What's the challenge from the cowboys? For you. They're a good defense. They're fast and physical. I think it starts up front with their pass rush. They've got some good players up there for sure. And guys in the back end who can make some plays. So we'll be ready for them. I think it's going to be a four quarter game. They all are these are tough divisional games. It'll be fun to be at home in front of the home fans and kind of be a fun stage for Monday night. Yeah. For sure. The home fans, maybe they're not selling their secondary tickets to market to cowboys fans. It seems like they're loud the first two weeks, like they're showing up. The least, obviously, you were in Tennessee to start, but it seemed like a different atmosphere against Carolina. Would you agree with that? Daniel? Yeah, absolutely. I think you could feel it. You can feel the energy and it was rocking. So I'm looking forward to getting out there Monday night. A lot of circles on number 11 and your meetings this week. Yeah, he's a good player for sure. He can play, I can do a lot of different things. Obviously rushing the passer, but just his speed and not forgetting the football. Definitely leaps off the tape. I remember when they came up here, play Kentucky in the garden last year. I got to sit down with them and talk and they're just my family and my brother and we just hung out in the hotel lobby and talked for 45 minutes, which was pretty cool for me just to hear his stories and hear him speak, but he's unbelievable leader and there's no wonder why that's successful. So he never went to coach cutcliffe and say, let's give Daniel a little guard play. What would you play? Guard forward 6 5? I don't know. I think he was all set. They had RJ Barrett and, you know, those guys down there. And feed my help. No? RJ Barrett was able to hold it down, I think, yeah. All those guys, for some reason they didn't, they never tapped me in. Okay. So what do you tell the big blue faithful that's over the moon right now about this two and O start and seeing saquon run like Penn State and I'm sure, again, Micah Parsons and other Penn stater would like to stop this train. But what do you say to the big blue faithful that's over the moon over this two and O start right now? Daniel Jones. Yeah, I mean, we certainly appreciate the support and I know this fan base is hungry for wins. We understand that and we feel that. But at the same time, I think we understand there's a lot of work to do for us and we're determined to do it. So he is from last year to this year, exactly. And last year, I mean, you got to get someone else involved to get CD lamb up and running. I am doing great. How's life for you at two O right now, Daniel Jones? It's good. It's good. You know, we had two tough games and happy to finish them both, but we understand there's a lot of work to do and we're back at it ready to go. So let's just jump right into the coach dabel of it all. How has his injection into your life into your quarterback room jet stream change things for you? Yeah, I mean, it's been fun working with Dave. He's thought an energy and enthusiasm to the, I'd say to the whole building, I think the guys have really grabbed onto and appreciated, but it's been fun working with him. He's energetic guys, got lots of ideas and he's always on. He always wants to talk football wants to get on the same page and think about something we could a check we can make or something we could do here or there that would help us out and it's been fun working with them and I've learned a lot. Do you have an example of him coming in and showing you something that you hadn't seen before or something that turned a lightbulb on over? Your head in a way, you got an example of that to pass along Daniel Jones? I don't know if there's an example. I mean, I think early on in the spring, I realized as we were practicing against our defense and just installing the offense, how quickly he wanted to start adding new things here and there or adding a variation to a certain route or a check versus a certain look to build into the system and for guys to go ahead and get repped and learn as part of kind of that base level install. I think that was good for us there and I realized kind of how he thought about football how he saw certain situations and trying to get us in the best look possible and give us an advantage. Well, I just know Daniel Jones from talking to my friends and who lived back out east where I grew up right around the Staten Island and all the other 5 boroughs in New Jersey is the decision to go for two and week one was so jarring to the Giants fan base. It was so audacious and risky, but also aggressive that it invigorated them and the fact that it obviously worked out was even better. What was it like for you walk me through that moment when Brian dabel, you've scored the touchdown to essentially tie the game and he's like, no, we're not time. We're going to go up. We're going to go for two. What was that moment for you? Daniel. Yeah. I mean, I think myself as long as the rest of the players, I don't think we were really surprised by it at all. I think he's been clear really since he's gotten here. He's going to be aggressive and put us in those give us those opportunities to win the game. Down the stretch, whether it's fourth and short, given us a chance to go for it or that situation of two point to win the game as players, you want to be in those situations. You want to have a chance to win the game. Down there down there at the end of it. So we appreciate that and I don't think any of us were surprised by that call there. Jim, what was it like when you hit it? And then obviously Bullock missed the field goal and it resulted in a win, a one in O start. Because the folks that I know who cover the team say they just there's just a different air in the building after that than previous years, Daniel. Yeah, I think there was. I mean, I think there was a lot of the fun celebration of the locker room after the game and a game where we had to come back down the stretch and certainly wasn't perfect. A lot of things. Didn't do as well as we had hoped. But we were able to kind of grit it out and find a way to win down there down the stretch. So that felt good. And we certainly enjoyed it, but I think we understood and moved on pretty quick and we got to do the same thing this week. I think we have. Well, I mean, I think as the quarterback and personally, I feel responsible for I'm fully responsible for my play and we haven't won enough games here in the past few years. He knew exactly where to go with the football every single play. And it just he knows as offense really well. It's a big deal. Like his comfort level was an all time high against Washington. And again, if he can do that every single week, I don't know, man, another thought. I love the way Daniel Jones runs his own read. It's very cool that Jay-Z and Garrett the offensive coordinator has stuck with it. It keeps calling it. Because he's great at it. I mean, he had this, what do you have? He ran 9 times for 95 yards and a touchdown Daniel Jones was a leading rusher for the Giants last night. That's awesome. I love seeing that. And to be clear, another exciting fact that it feels almost like a victory in and of itself, is that Daniel Jones was not the reason why the Giants lost. Like, oh, hallelujah. Can you believe it? Dude made a lot of good throws, and he deserves praise. He had a really good game last night, and I understand anybody who wants to give up on Daniel Jones. I've been that guy for a long time, 'cause I realize his potential, a long time ago, this guy doesn't have the potential to I think everybody at top 5 quarterback. But if he does what he did last night, consistently, the rest of the year, I have an open mind. That's good enough. That's enough. Now, the leash is very short. You ever seen a airplane Mario? Like Mario 64, where if you get close to the bob on guys, they chase you when they explode. The fuse is really, really short, kind of like one of those guys in Mario 64 where, hey, if Daniel Jones gets even close to the edge of being a bad quarterback, I'm out. I have no patience for the guy. But if he plays good and consistent like he did like that, all year long, I got patients for that. By the way, weird thought I also really liked the all blue sock, cleat combo. We had it looked really clean down low. That's a good look. It made him look faster, which is weird, but it's true. And I just, I don't know. I just think that Daniel Jones deserves hate when he earns it. But last night, there's no reason today, Daniel Jones. In fact, he did nothing wrong to earn a loss last night. Now the final thing is from this game, we're two in games into the NFL season and I'm ready to believe that this Washington defense is overhyped. They had a hard time getting pressure on Daniel Jones. I expected it to be like the Arizona Cardinals Tennessee Titans game from week one where they just got pressure constantly and were harassing Daniel Jones all night. That didn't happen. Washington's pass rush did not dominate like I expected. And by the way, that's two weeks in a row. They've been ineffective getting after a quarterback. And also the Giants offensive line is not good. They should not be having trouble getting pressure after Daniel Jones, like they did on Thursday night. "But Taylor heineke should not be the franchise quarterback in Washington. When I look for a quarterback, I'm looking for the next Josh Allen or Justin Herbert or Kyle Murray. Someone with crazy high potential. I'm looking for basically like the Ferrari of quarterbacks. And I would say that Taylor heineke is like the Ford focus of quarterbacks. You trust him enough, he's fine, he's good enough for now. And I would keep heineke until I find something better. And I would not get rid of him. Even after, if I found a Justin Herbert or maybe Malik Willis at liberty is a guy who's got crazy high potential in college right now. Maybe the draft from leak Willis, I would still keep Taylor heineke on my team. I trust him. He's great backup. You can win if my starting quarterback gets hurt. But the entire time I would have heinecke on my football team, I would be looking for an upgrade. And that's really how I feel. Taylor heinecke is exactly what Washington needs right now. He's not going to last forever, but I would recommend fans enjoy it well at last he's fun, he's cool, he can win a little bit. He's a good story, he's accurate. He's a pretty solid decision maker only had a couple of throws last night where I was like, ah, I wouldn't make that's a bad throw into triple coverage. Don't make that happen. He can extend plays a little bit. But he's also small has limited arm. I just don't look at Taylor Heineken go, oh wow, oh my goodness, I'm so excited for his potential, but I like what he's done he's done good work so far. Again, I wouldn't want the guy forever. Now let's talk about giant's quarterback Daniel Jones. I thought Daniel Jones had a great game against Washington. And I know it's popular to say he's a terrible quarterback. NFL week two is here on Thursday Night Football the Washington football team beat the New York Giants 30 to 29. And dude, I wake up this morning and I honestly, I feel I feel bad for giants fans. I think those people are finally starting to wake up to the realization of what their season is going to look like. And I hope I'm wrong. I hope the Giants have a great, like, I think people don't realize I don't ever root against anybody or any team. I'm not that kind of person. I don't believe based on what I've seen leading up to the year and then in the first two games, this is not going to be a good year for The New York Times. It's going to be an ugly long grueling year for the Giants. And I feel bad for giants fans. And I hope I'm wrong, but I feel bad for you guys who are waking up today and realize oh no. What have we got ourselves into this year? There's a lot to be said. Number one, the Giants should have won this game. I don't know how you don't walk away from this game feeling like the Giants just had a massive missed opportunity. The biggest reason to me was penalties. They had 11 penalties in this game. Pretty much all of them were costly. They extended drives for Washington. They gave them second chances. They hurt drives through New York. For example, in one drive, they had two false starts to row in a third and 5 turned into a third and 15 that can not happen if you want to win. And then of course, on the final drive for Washington, there were two big mistakes. One would have been a penalty. The Giants luckily caught it before it happened. It was a third and 5, and the Giants had to waste the time out. And waste is the wrong word that's the end of the game. That's why you keep your timeouts for that moment. But the Giants had too many men in the field, so they had to take a time out. It would have been a penalty..

It's got to be frustrating for giants fans Ah don't want to jump to conclusions. But they look like they're going to be the worst team in the nfc east. Dexter lawrence can really play blake. Martinez is really underrated. I think sometimes as a linebacker who can really make plays who is really smart and can run the rookie that they drafted from georgia jewelry in the second round looked really good when he was out there. And then you get to their secondary bradberry and A dory jackson or the corners peppers and ryan are the safeties. Now they play This guy darnay homes number thirty a lot In nickel but all of these guys can run. All of these guys can cover and then peppers in logan in particular were used in multiple safety blitzes. I think and. I don't know because i didn't count but i'm gonna guess that. Fifty percent of their of the dropbox bridgewater faced five or more rushers and they were almost getting there all night long. It was so close. They didn't you got to close the deal But i think they've got very good team speed. And i think they play very urgently and i think that it's a pretty good defense and it will prove out to be a pretty good defense if it stays healthy. That's always a key. The weakness of the giant team is it's offensive. Line and von miller made nate solar. Really pay in this game. Andrew thomas is there left tackle. Nate solar was starting right.
