"Really watching. Daniel Daniel J Lewis calls a fake video and says that the YouTube algorithm will harm you and blah blah blah. And I'm not so sure that it's worthwhile getting angry about. But I think and weirdly, I keep on being recommended, the pod news podcast on YouTube. Which is a very strange thing of seeing your stuff being recommended to you. But yeah, so it's clearly being recommended to some people, although by the numbers non awful lot. But yeah, but it's just another tool. And I'm interested to see what YouTube do in terms of podcasting. It's very clear that Google podcasting Google is a company with who just chase the flashing lights. And it's very clear that Google podcasting whoever it is who came up with the idea is long gone and therefore it's another failed experiment from Google. It's a really big podcast app. But no one at Google seems to care about it. And the back end tools are a bit buggy and a bit broken. And it's a shame. And it would be lovely if Google were to spend a little bit more time and perhaps giving it to the alphabet team. To get into YouTube, maybe the right, maybe the right plan. But I would really hope if there's one thing that Google has been pretty good at, it's been working on open platforms working on open. Tools to keep things relatively open. They haven't always done that, but who has Google has? Yeah. Not always, but most of the time, they've been pretty good at sort of setting open open standards and everything else. And if they end up doing that a little bit in terms of the podcast world, then great. We could do with a little bit of a little bit of help in that area. So yeah, but yeah. I mean, I heard you told saying that YouTube you would be able to get an RSS feed of your show on YouTube in the future, perhaps. I mean, they used to have RSS feeds in the dim and distant past. I went hold your breath. So interesting. Interesting to see if they turn into a podcast host, as well as as well as just a podcast player. And podcasting would be just a drop in the ocean in terms of their bandwidth Bill. So I'd be nothing. Around maybe. The only plan the only justification that they would have for doing that would be as if they wanted to get in the podcast advertising business. So they've already sold then are selling audio ads for YouTube music, particularly in Canada, where they've where they've trying a different model of YouTube music. So if they're selling audio ads now, then they've got the capability to sell audio ads within within podcast shows as well. So and of course, they are one of the only large companies that have payment plans already set up across the world. You can be a YouTube and creator anywhere in the world, and you will get paid. And they'll sort out the tax for you and everything else. There are very, very few companies who can do that. Spotify still can't, which is why we're not seeing Spotify paid subscription in more than ten different countries. But Apple can and Google can through YouTube or through the Google Play Store. So that's actually a real opportunity that they've got, and frankly, nobody else has. So again, interesting to see what also think about the core business models of all these companies too. What they were their bread and butter is Google is primarily an advertising company. Yeah, so if there was anybody in the medium that would benefit from getting involved in the podcast advertising at Google, right? So it just seems like they've really kind of let this one go by probably longer than I expected. I expected them to be involved in podcasts advertising a long time ago. But I think they did acquire an audio company at one point because I think that they were trying to sell it audio ads for they bought they bought a radio company a radio advertising company. And I remember it in NAB show, there was this whole Google Google was there in force and everybody was very excited. This was in Rome in Italy. Google was there in force. Everybody was really excited. And typical Google, they lost interest in 6 months and moved on. But I think that the idea was that, yeah, they were going to sell remnant ads. And those Ronan ads, there were sell those on broadcast radio because broadcast radio is still $18 billion a year. So it's still a pretty big market. So they were going to do that, but also do some clever location based advertising when you were listening on your phone and various other things. I can't remember the name of the company that they bought. But it was a full play out system that did all kinds of stuff and Google ended up buying it and then lost interest and moved on. So yeah, so if YouTube's interest in podcasting helps helps the company as a whole get more interested in the whole podcast space, then I think that that might be quite interesting. If that happens. The other company that's been fascinating to see get involved in advertising and it's a company that you wouldn't necessarily associate with this is Amazon. They've had a very aggressive position on advertising in general here over the last 6 months that I've seen. And I believe it's one of the reasons why they wanted to acquire art 19 and wondering so they could really push on the ad business because they have a huge division now at Amazon called Amazon ads. Yeah, I've seen a lot of marketing and promotion for that tool tools platform that they have. It's astonishingly large. Do you know how large it is? I mean, podcasting is $1 billion a year, right? Amazon advertising, $26 billion this year, it'll make. Right. $26 billion is massive. Yeah. But if you contrast that with Google, Google is much bigger than even that. So the podcast ad revenue is.

"Sixth of twenty twenty one epi new year so glad to have survived twenty twenty and hopefully we'll survive twenty twenty one as well welcome aboard. Let's see yeah we're gonna take a little review a happened in twenty twenty as far as the podcast industry goes and So let's get started with that so in two thousand twenty. The podcast industry added over a million shows. That's data from my podcast reviews at daniel j lewis and out of the one point seven million shows listed on apple podcast. Sixty percent ish. I don't have an exact number. I didn't Didn't write all that down because it's not super important to us. Indie podcasters but interesting but Sixty percent ish of the one point. Seven million shows listed on apple. Podcasts are inactive and inactive. I believe means has not produced an episode in ninety days. I've had a few inactive shows in the past. So i can relate may not be dead but definitely inactive but a lot of those shows were You know by anchor. And what's that other one anyway. You know free easy to set up The do a couple of episodes decided not for them and leave them hanging out there. So there's a whole bunch of dead anchor shows on apple red circle shows soundcloud shows. And you know anything like that. That's free You know people go in and kick the tires and nothing wrong with that but you know some of those numbers can seem huge.

"Again I'm your host Jim Carlson Broadcasting live from the data to the studios here in a very beautiful Bellevue Nebraska falls arrive and you guys know I like fall and I appreciate it everywhere. It's beautiful out there, and of course, we post a show with real show outs now today and I'm introducing here in second today we got. Some really good show you're going to want to head out as Daniel talks about what he's GonNa do you're gonNA WANNA head out and catcher show because there's a lot to do out there but they'll be at the average Guy Dot TV slash h g g four, six, zero I mentioned him just a second ago. But Daniel J Lewis is joining us tonight he from the audacity to podcast and Daniel was on seven and a half years ago. Home Tech No tech interviews what I called it back in that day number four, nine, even home gadget. Geeks came on and we talked about audio Daniel Welcome back. Thank you so much Jim. It's. It's been a long long time getting here to there, but it's good to talk to you. Again it's good good to have gone on in our lives and lots of things have happened three March eighth two, thousand thirteen as the date that you are here and We talked about audio. So if you WANNA go back, you can just put in Daniel j Lewis you'll find him out there and go back and and talk about that Daniel. Have you sit tight for a second here we're GONNA spend if you're coming in on Youtube and you came in because we've got the subject which our GB lighting that we're going to. Kinda. Talk about hang tight we get some community stuff to go through and then we'll get to that. Stuff Daniel always get those comments like took him ten minutes to get to the point right now that's the point that's kind of what we do here. So hang tight for me Oh, one second one is I've been using pod page Daniel have you seen? Have you seen pod page? Yes. It's a service that when I first saw it, I thought really I don't think we need this but then after I looked at it, I thought Oh yeah we need this. It's really really good. In fact, I'm going to just get rid of my APP. So I've I've had an APP I'd had an iphone and ANDROID APP I didn't pay ninety nine bucks each for that Big thanks to our patriots subscribers who helped me pay for that every year. But I I think people are moving away from dedicated APPs. I, just find like most people that are listening to podcast or listening to it on their own player. Don't you think? There was that classic thing? Yeah. People know how to install an APP better than they know how to listen to a podcast, but I think That Delta is so much smaller now that we should just tell people to subscribe in their passed up. Yeah. Yeah. I think. So in okay. Wait a minute before we go too much further you've got a great service as well like there's probably nobody that knows podcast and podcast numbers. Better than you can you give us a give give us a one minute little promo of your plug in and helps podcasters. I made a wordpress plugin, is that what you're referring to? Made several things for that's what I do is I make stuff for podcast. wordpress plugin. And Jim is probably one of the power users of it is called social subscribe and follow icons or for short subscribe and Follow and eight years you I think at this point more than fifty different icons vector is that you can put on your website, make them into buttons, make them into icons, adjusted colors in such match and fonts to match the rest of your site so that you can put these handy subscription in follow icons or buttons on your site in when I created it, I used to code the stuff completely manually for some of my clients and for myself and I thought I could make a plug in for this in it. It helps podcasters, it helps social. Media people I the only place I think it might be the only plug in has a vector stitcher icon in or for a while it was at least it's you know all of the other ones in there. It's had an Amazon icon for a while. So if you're excited about having your podcast on Amazon music, you can already use the Amazon icon there. You could use the Amazon icon for something else you know support us through Amazon affiliate link that's not quite there policy though but things like that that you can do twitter buttons, Patriot on buttons, all kinds of things get hub in almost anything you can think of is in it or simply requested it and it will be an amount. Set Subscribe and Follow Dot Com. Yeah. Let me let me to show it really quick 'cause I I'm super proud of the work. You can see these icons rate here I've got him on the page that are available, and then if you go to the average Guy Dot TV slash subscribe or you just clicked the subscribe button, you'll actually see the all the ways you can subscribe to the Audio for Gadget Geeks. The video because we have the we have a video rss feed. Why wouldn't you saw cyber frontiers same thing that are out there and Daniel makes all these available.

"Into those compatibility problems on my computer that same one hour stereo file. That's about one gigabyte. Took twelve seconds to transfer. And that's still using the Sandisk. Ultra car not even the Super Fast Card. Twelve seconds through a USB three point zero reader compared to two minutes through the road caster pro and then using a one hour multi-track file which again was about seven and a quarter gigabytes of data. It took one minute. Twenty four seconds to transfer the USB three point zero whereas it took fourteen and a half minutes to transfer from the road caster pro so you can see the huge benefit that you're getting there now if you use a much faster micro SD card. Like the extreme pro. That I used and fortunately I couldn't get exact timings but I did see that transferring the files through road Castro pro APP USB. Three point are reader with that. Extreme pro card. Were two point one times. Faster than the Sandisk Ultra Card in twenty three times faster than the row caster pros USB two point. Oh so these transfer times would have been even faster instead of twelve seconds for one hour stereo file. It would have been a couple or a few seconds instead of a minute and a half for one hour multi-track file it would have been maybe ten to twenty seconds of transfer time because of the three point. Oh and because of that much faster micro St Card if you want faster. Transfer speeds and a faster workflow in getting set up with the files from your Rhode caster proud than number one. Update the firmware number. Two record in Stereo instead of multi-track if you can number three use the road Castro companion APP for multi track recordings because that's really going to improve your workflow and make those multi track recordings faster to work with number four use a separate micro st reader and number five upgrade to a faster micro. Sd Card if you want the links to these specific micro st cards. That I've used or see the information or to see the updated stats when I have the actual timings of the micro st cards extreme pro performance. When I get that back then please go to the show notes for this episode where you can also comment with your thoughts over at the audacity to podcast dot com slash faster. Rc P. I'll have some more information and tips about the road. Caster PRO coming up very soon but in the meantime now that I've given you some of the got's you some of the tools. "Back maybe a mentioned on social someone says is cool and you kind of like a really listening to they really care. Are they really engaged. And then something the happens on a more personal level and you open your heart a little bit and you tell them what's going on and it's all of a sudden it's like assume incomes this this this this show of appreciation and love and you're like wow because it really to me it. It really hits home that they're there for you more than they are for the content and the center. podcasters is realized that that they're there for you. It's okay to be a little personal. You know half they get into everything that's going on in your life but it's okay to be a little personal salaam shows because what have we set for the beginning. This is A. We're having a conversation here between us but really what it is. This is a conversation sation going to the. There's another person in this this listening right now. The shaking their head. Yes because they have A. They're plugged into us. And that is is the beauty of this medium. I I really I think it brings it home in a big big way at. There's anywhere takeaways from you on that I I would say that if you are listening to a podcast and you notice. They seem to drop off the radar. Reach out to them encourage them. Don't give up on them and let them know how much you appreciate their content. Even if you don't see them jump drop off the radar. Let people know that you appreciate what they're they're doing whether that's writing a podcast review for them or sending them an email or really the best thing you can do is both send them an email and get someone else listening to their podcast. And I and I think that is just super super sound advice and Sometimes we just on as most of you listening podcasters. She's not a lot of listeners. I listening right now so we often are trying to figure out how you know. How do we get our audience are there? Are they engaged in. It's it's oftentimes. I found when I been doing my show and maybe might be the same way back man. I'm just in my talking to myself. And all of a sudden distinct inbox email from someone or taxed or facebook message or something says hey while the blew me away. That was awesome. Thank you you or you inspired me to do something or you know that to me. Is this money that I've said to podcasters all along long speed will say that. I've only got two hundred listeners. Well visualize two hundred people in front of you. Visualize that think about the office you work working or where you're at and visualize a hundred or two hundred or five hundred. If you get up to a thousand then really think about I mean you go to like a convention mentioned or something. How many people as thousand people in this in this room and I think many will sit back and go? WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA? WHOA WHOA I really am reaching Chink people? And then if he does mega sphere numbers where you're the forty fifty thousand listener thing you those that are doing those types numbers you need to talk to us and I think sometimes there's this idea that we focus on the numbers because we're thinking sponsorships and said for a while with my own podcast is I can't afford to have a sponsor because my podcast helps my business outright and earn more from that than I could from a CPM sponsored now. Someday I'm not completely opposed to the idea of having sponsors if they're extremely relevant to my audience but there are so many other ways that so you can monetize a podcast. Sometimes I feel like taking a sponsor is almost devaluing. Your audience not always and that doesn't mean if if you have a sponsor you're not valuing your audience but focus on the people not just the numbers that you get because they're listening for our reasoning. They want they like you and they wanna work with you you know. Let's be frank if you have someone that's especially if you're doing a show like yours where you're doing putting reality formation giving advice you know and they're listening in the more than likely that they are super well they are A. They're like the best candidate ever to become a business customer. So and you'll be amazed what people will do for sticker. Really we have a sticker change change and we send us a sticker. We'll send you a little care package back and just request information. We'll send us a self stressed. I self addressed stamped envelope air. Will it gets back even faster to you. I'll put the. I'll put the dress in the show. Do send us a sticker and get a care package from us as well so I guess Daniel on your show and your podcast journey. The former here is when you know. You're genesis story. What would your feeling when you get the message? You're putting out the feedback you're getting some really deviate a little bit from this time. Where where do you think the podcasting spaces aces right now? You've been with us since seven. So how do you think it's shaping up. I'm seeing a lot more. Seriousness coming to the space both in the corporate interest as well as some standards emerging and. I think that's a good thing to have standards like Ab for measuring downloads but also other standards. Like how loud should your audio be. What should the format of your audio be? MP3 A a C whatever and these kinds of standards help provide provide a consistent experience for the audience so that they're not having to die for their volume knob between different episodes of different podcasts. And also help ensure that we're all reaching the same quality level so that it doesn't take all all that much work to reach some of these standards that are emerging that's one of the things that's really encouraging to see and and I think that some some of that might be a little uncomfortable for says maybe the FCC starts to get involved. Brian Start to say here's what you can and can't say in a podcast or certain guidelines that we've already seen the FTC become more proactive. In saying this is what you need to do to disclose your affiliate relationships and such dots all good good. I know it might be a little uncomfortable. Change is often uncomfortable but it's good for the space. It's good for us. It's good for the audience to start standardizing some things and start raising that bar for quality of content quality of production. If I have to do a blueberry plug here you know and if you are looking to up your game and you're looking to make sure that your show is hitting all those marks if you need some help Opel's production we. We've got a great team now at blueberry pro and you can find information about our blueberry pro team at blueberry dot com and Kate as on top of helping our customers that opt in our services. They've really doing a great job over there. So definitely. If you're if you're looking to up your game in podcasting look into two two blueberry pro and it is really nice just being talent for change. Yeah you know. And that that's something that is true. I on on and actually will thorough point and I was just out at sea. Yes and One of the team members plug it's live scattered took care of all the production this year. "I used used to work at a nonprofit as a designer and as Speaker for a nonprofit organization I fell in love with podcasting at both consuming. It and as I started creating eating podcasts myself creating the podcasts and at some point I felt like I had something to add to the conversation about how to podcast and business emerged emerged from that and now that is what I do today is helping podcasters podcast better so the Edessa to podcast is not just about audacity. It's about everything podcasting. When I first started it I knew I wanted to have a double meaning to the name now? I kind of regret a little bit but when I first started all of the other podcast about podcasting both of them. We're talking about audition or four other software and they would say. Yeah you can probably do this audacity and I was there thinking wait wait wait. Don't tell me how do you tell me if I even can not just you probably can so I wanted to cover and feature audacity more in the beginning but also it's double Innuendo. Now it's always been and and this has always been in the tagline about the guts to podcast courage the audacity tonight gas right so I bet you. It's is kind of interesting because you probably get a lot of people come looking for those dusty articles and then we know those of you that those of us that know you know that you cover a whole bunch of other stuff you do deep dives chiefs in the tech. But I always ask you know you hinted to it a little bit. So what was the genesis moment that made you say I'm going to do a podcast. This is what I WANNA do. I used to have a seventy five minute commute to work and I'd gone through audio books. I tried local talk radio. I Hate Sports. I don't listen to the news. I hate commercials so talk. Radio just wasn't quite therefore me and around that time. When was when I tunes four point nine was released with support for podcasts? I didn't have an IPOD. I didn't even like Apple. Been I use my laptop computer I put it in the passenger seat of my car and I would play the podcast through the speaker on my laptop computer. That's how Larry Wow. I fell in love with the medium because here was niche content content that I could easily consume and have automatically didn't have all of these commercials and traffic breaks and all of this and it was content exactly that I was interested in so what was at one point while I was listening to this week. In Tech from Leo LaPorte and I realized these guys are doing something very similar to what we're doing doing here. They're talking through skype or some kind of voice over IP system they are recording their publishing on a website. There's something about our S. I can probably figure out. I think I know how to do this. I've produced audio and video before I think I want to start a podcast so I just thought what what what can I do a podcast. Gaston I like making people laugh. So my first podcast was a clean comedy. podcast about being a bachelor at that point but the more I got into podcast in everyone everyone who gets into podcasting probably feels this to the more you get in the more you want to get in and that was it for me in that moment of just realizing I know. Oh how to do this or I think I can figure this out and I have something I want to say too so yet started. And what year was that. Let's see let's let's go back in time frame. My podcast started in. Oh seven so you've been at this twelve years so I think you can qualify for. Oh Gee at this time you know being being one of those that have passed the ten year mark. Twelve years into podcasting. So you've you've been doing this awhile and what do you feel then. No your journey. He has spent interesting. What do you feel then two things? What have you got out of this? And what do you feel your audience gets out of this. What I've gotten out of this is the ability to pursue a new dream and especially with some stuff is kind of messy in my life right now but having in a business that the podcast supports and the business came from the podcast being able to then be there for my son and being able to provide and not feel like? I'm in some dead end job but yet to do something I enjoy and inspiring other people to to do what they enjoy. Whether that's starting a business as well from their podcast or maybe just earning some side income or maybe just simply having fun with their podcast. I love hearing hearing those stories from people saying I started this and I met some great people like had great opportunities. I have new best friends or anything like that and it could be profiting from just the fun of it or you had to be profiting monetarily so you know if you think about that too that we've got a new marketing director. We hide here here and I was explaining to him how the make up of the podcast community is at least fifty percent of people are just doing a show for themselves. They're not worried about making money. It's refund it could be two guys over. A beer. Could be a a two ladies. That are having something or cough. I it's really a very is the scope Someone down in a basement basement is trying to share information. Or it's really runs the full gamut and I think that's the beauty of podcasting and those of us are podcasting. Know this already but I don't think that everyone quite does and Jeff has come in from a different industry. So there's things that I'm telling him he's getting a little item about out because he just you know you don't have that insider look and he's getting some inside baseball. Look that we share like here so I think that You know the ability to share a message and quite frankly half-honoured bill the business. Whatever you WANNA do? That's the B.. There's no rules so you knew what you wanted to put out there. What was the reward? What what has come back to you? It's a business a thriving business with multiple products in multiple brands out there. reputation in the industry. When I started this I wasn't thinking? Oh I WANNA be famous I WANNA be an influence or it was just. I have something something to say and I want to share this message with others and seeing the relationships and friendships that have come from this. have been the most rewarding thing of all and getting to see so much creativity as well and I'm amazed and humbled by the emails I received from people saying Zane. You inspired me to do this or my life is now better because of the help you gave me to do my podcast which has enabled me to accomplish this thing and to be a part of other people's stories like that is one of the most rewarding things in this for me so Mike. I know you've known Daniels long as I have have I'll let you ask a couple of questions. I put you on the spot here. Oh that's all right And you know you were talking about wanted to start another podcast. Another Person I. I think I've started in. Stop more. podcast anybody but that's all right So you did the clean comedy podcasts. Desi the PODCAST. was there any others. Oh Yeah of course I did. A podcast Teaching critical thinking to Christians with movies. I did a podcast about the TV show once upon a time and then a spinoff podcast about the SPINOFF TV show. Once upon a time in Wonderland and I've done some other podcast sort of things like for a nap hot pomo. I did a month of daily episodes inside the podcasting business. And I'm a CO host on podcasters roundtable and and I've got all of these other ideas and I've had other ideas of other podcasts. I wanted to start or some day may still do. But we'll see you know and it takes US army might go ahead. I was just GonNa say what you were probably going to say that you know you gotta realize that each show is its own entity and it's going to take whatever amount of time you know exactly what I was going to say because it's true you you know we're I'm doing for sometimes four episodes a week two of my own show with getting essential one with this and then one for new media show and it's like holy crap I'm I'm doing a lot of content. You think about the work. We don't do a lot of prep work for new for new media. Show but for this we do crap and we do pre show and I think about you know that spy six six hours that I've dedicating just in prep time to get ready to do the podcast. So they do take a lot of time and energy and I found this amazing extreme where the people who seem to have the most success for their podcasts. Either do their podcast. Nearly full time just on the podcast building creating creating it everything or the opposite which is surprising thing people who do it as a hobby are often more successful asphalt. At least that I've seen yet then the people who do their podcast as part of something bigger right because the people who do podcasts as part of something bigger I really focused on. That's something bigger. Yeah I look at the shows that never get recognition in space. They're never talked about. They might be in the top two hundred in apple or and I don't even like to even reference because then people are going to go look where they rank and apple but there some place. They're you know they they're getting traction action and you go and you look at you know they call you and say oh. I'm worried about my numbers. You couldn't look at the numbers you like. Wow you're like you're good to go you know you don't you don't have to worry. You're you're on target. You know you're making some you've made some serious and like really you're doing fantastic and and even sometimes sometimes I'm like an is sit back in the seat and surprised at shows that very rarely get any recognition. And that's something. We're going to try to start doing here at blue areas. We're GONNA try to start doing recognizing shows each month that are really kicking it. Not just from an audience standpoint but from a content standpoint as well and and kind of highlighting them. But we'll talk about more about that later. So let's go back to your story Daniel so you've also had and we don't want to get into your personal life if you've had some diversity and challenges over the last couple years. How's that affected? You know because I've always said you know certain things have to come first in your life How's that affected your production of your show and in your businesses so forth? They been able to keep things moving. I've really had focused on the business. It's more than the podcast. And that's why I was referring to earlier when I said that's my big thing is the business because that's how I earn the money right. Yes selling my products and services so the PODCAST has had to take a little bit of a back seat and for two years it released only two episodes or so I did put out a personal. I lounged awhile back just letting my audience know a little bit of what was going on in the the support I got from my family. There in the podcast was amazing. I mean for a while I was every time I'd open my email inbox. I'd be crying because there is just so much love and support and people offering help people just giving encouragement saying we will be there. We're not going. To unsubscribe describe from your podcast. And so when I brought the podcast back and the schedule is still a little infrequent right now but bringing it back in publishing publishing episodes at least more frequently now the downloads are still there. Exhaust really lose my audience. Although I'm not so anal about my stats I know exactly exactly whether my audience ranged but to see that they stuck stuck and here. I'm the guy to that. Stayed subscribe to ask Ninja for years and Years Hoping Episode was disappointed that you know. I think this is a copies point because I had a moment in my podcasts where I was blown away by my listeners as well as when I lost my father and they took ten days off and came back to literally like five thousand plus emails in my inbox. And it's those moments because you oftentimes as podcasters. Were a little bit lonely route. Doing these shows we a little feedback..

"This leads. Let's talk about this best practice. About being everywhere you reasonably can apps and directories the more syndication about at least. That's my mindset Mike how about you. Do you like to be everywhere. Yeah Oh definitely and you know as we say over and over over again you know. We don't care how you listen as long as you listen and you know but sometimes you know the you get the shiny object syndrome to lake. Lake Oh well this one hosting company has this temporary exclusivity on whatever platform. I'M GONNA move to that one to be on that one platform APP form and in most cases. It's not worth the trouble because eventually that platform will be open. Everybody you know like back when spotify if I was exclusive to one host and then now it's open to everybody and then you know on the flip side we were talking about luminary. You know I actually had one of my shows removed from luminary back when we thought they were re hosting and then they were doing a proxy and all that stuff and you know now now that They've sort of calmed down or or you know done things a little more correctly then. I don't mind it being on there again. I don't care how you listen as long as you. Listen so try to be is everywhere as you possibly can be because you never know where you're going to pick up a listener you know Pandora Laura you know. It's not the biggest player out there in podcast. But you know if someone's a avid Pandora user in the accidentally find your show just make make sure in your show you you you send them back to the home base and that's how you gain listeners. It's falls back into what I call the blueberry way. Hey you know what I don't. We don't care where they listen as they listen but in your show they need to know where Alpha is they need to know where podcast insider is where where ah various shows are at so that in case we come off the platform you know with something happens we get deep platforms or you know whatever 'cause it isn't being updated they say Okay Cape. Todd's missing todd. Mike Are Missing. Where do I go find them? I know to go to pot. Yes insider dot com and find the show. So it's it's really Kinda that relevancy of making sure people know where you live S- like how am I going to find Daniel. I don't know where your your house addressing so I can't live in Cincinnati. Come on down. I'll be like okay. Okay I'm GonNa in Cincinnati where where do I go now. You know my address in the phone so I think is I do have a consensus be everywhere you can be. Yeah I think so too definitely all right. So what say you listeners. Do we want to hear back from Utah. Blueberry DOT COM or Mike Blueberry DOT COM or. Let's talk about some blueberry specific news yesterday. Check your inbox. January newsletter is out. That dropped dropped late yesterday. Afternoon's got lots of tidbits in there some juicy stuff course. Todd's corner of stuff that I've announcing and of course we are getting ready ready to ramp up to get ready to do the Blueberry Kademi. I'm excited about that. So if you live in the Columbus or Detroit area this is where the first two events will happen in late May early June and Be a two day event where we will train you and maybe you know some of the podcasting so we more more details is on that as we get closer so but anyway we made some major changes website so you can still find the podcast insider at podcast insider dot com but is now being redirected on the main blueberries site. So we're bringing the the old power press podcast Carr's site and the and the insiders site together to be a central location which we've been planning on doing for longtime which actually happened last last week so Mike. Did you hear of anyone complaining that anyone get duplicate downloads or did you do the migration correctly. I think we did it correctly. I only only had one complaint That we disappeared off of Google. PODCASTS temporarily okay was just during the the short time of the transition because I've tried it on my android devices and it all works so anyway so it should be good. It was smoother than I thought what was going to be. Yeah I was I was at in Vegas for Ceus and I saw the move going down in. I just kind of took a deep breath was going wall. We were recording this really. So you're doing the move mid recordings that's insane so everyone stepped up to happen in all the redirects or this is what we do so it should have went smooth. If it wouldn't have we would have had to take a punch in the face. Don't you think thank you get a refresher course. And what we've been preaching so this will make for a more unified experience for people that are coming to find and information. About the sites that blueberry dot com slash podcast dash insider or just go to podcasts insider it's redirected to the main page. There's a big old button. Latin right on the front page DOT COM too. So that's easy so the Clemson up is on the twenty eighth. I will actually be in the house for that. So if you are going to be in the Columbus area on on the twentieth of January we have a meet up. We'll have elite to the meet up dot com a promotion for Ohio podcasters and Columbus. Feel free we to to come out. I guess I've already talked about the Blueberry Academy but Mike you talk a little bit about press eight point two and I don't Dan off. You've seen the Beta or not but my what's coming million power press eight point two eight dot two were continuing our Ui update and simplification of things. And we're losing one of the tabs and the settings the episodes tab and that's going to be replaced by a new episode box when you make your post so it's it's pretty slick. There's some instructions on the link that I'll have in the show notes for this episode and I'm going to be making a video on how that works. It looks looks different. Everything is still there just looks different and I would add. It's it's even more there now instead of before in previous power press versions. If you wanted to use a particular feature you had to go. I enable the feature right before you could use the feature. Now you can just soon you can just use used feature right. Yeah and that's that's kind of what we're we're trying to go for. Is You know. Make it so that everything is done in one place instead of two and there'll be some more of that coming in eight dot three but if you want to test out eight that to they'll be linked to the Beta right in the show notes so we'll just say this. It is a major transformation for the episode box. So if you're using power press and you want to get you know here's fair warning. This is a bait Okay so with Beta it comes risk relatively low but it is the release version I mean and basically we are going to unless anybody comes back and says well we got some big issue or we got the big problem eight point two. That's in Beta will be the release. It is the release candidate and I don't know if we've got an exact date we're gonNa Punch inch that out. It's I think it's relatively soon and But eight point three is where things really get crazy We're going to complete dashboard award revamp and I was looking at it yesterday. And and they're well along in that so I think eight point three gets us to the complete revamp camp of a power press. I think we'll be really really close to being done with it but big changes come in and simplification it's all about quote on quote making it easier for podcasters the podcast and Especially new folks coming in that. Want to do podcasting the blueberry way and having their own website and having their own dot com having having wordpress site with power press and being power press powered. So we'll see what happens in. Danny you've got to play with eight point to actually you got to see some the preliminary limited screens from the developer. What's your what's your thoughts and you know what your your gut telling you so much cleaner so much easier to use? You both have have more access or will have more access to features as well as not be so overwhelmed features. It's A. It's a great balance between both. I think people are GonNa uh-huh saying also I didn't know I could do that. Yeah and because some of that stuff in quite frankly kind of hid in some of those settings and and if you if you're a little timid and don't know what to Click we've kind of eliminated that and of course made a lot of the apple. podcasts up this apple podcast yes specific more easy to get to as well so we look forward to hearing everyone's well. I think there's GonNa be some people that will scream and some people say cheer will yeh eight but we're we're definitely prepared told a Toll Ben to give us fair warning because we'll have to beef beef up the support team. Yeah we're we're GONNA attack Li. I think things are because this is this is a major major major change in popper hasn't changed in the episode box in this. This is like totally revamp so a long time so fair warning. You WANNA get debate and test that you can but You know if you having problems with feedback. Police ended to us now or As they say when people get ready to get married forever hold your peace..

"Is now. Don't technology transformation in new organizational structure. Meaning they're laying people off so they've restructured their money now they're restructuring their people at figured. Figured there's a bunch of them that are are going to get laid off but they didn't say as much In the article that I had or their press release. Yeah the one what I saw said hundreds so at least it's not thousands but Anyway they look like they're trying to get some efficiencies over there. I wonder if they're going to of course hummy people they've got working there podcast group. They have been leading a lot of the radio. PEOPLE GO I. I had a friend that worked for one of their stations in La La and. He's no longer there so they're having their IHEART awards for tonight. I think or tomorrow night one of the two so some of friends of the of the show here are actually going to be attending that event. They're going to be honoring their own as I've often said but moving on here spotify looking for podcast producer for owned channels. Danny and you want to go work for spotify. I don't know I I might be for sale. Maybe maybe nice but spotify is such an interesting player in the space. Because they're making so many waves and there is a lot of misconception about how much the space is owned or dominated by spotify whether it even is but it is really really neat. What they're doing and helping the industry as a whole grow to is? There was an article that had come out talked about. They were like number one in podcasting seeing in the sources from it. Were kind of Hokey. And you know we look at our numbers and there's no way spotify is number one but they're making impact for a lot of shows which is good and bringing on new listeners and doing some innovative things which I think they're causing you know other other organizations to step up their game but anyway spotify I seeking a podcast producer for their own channels Aka for their own internal shows so Mike D Remember. The podcast cast patent troll. Oh yeah definitely I'll never forget it When I heard about it we were at CS that one year? I think Daniel you were there too and cliff cliff come and told us about that and and anyway it's been ongoing for a long time and finally looks like it's dead. Yes so a fastest. Shouldn't appeals court rejects the case against CBS. CBS was actually ordered to pay so they don't have to write that check now now. So that's good and I think this is the final well. Hopefully the final chapter that but it was quite a term time I remember having to Dole out a check to the F F for for that did any. Did you step up or anybody else do that. I can't remember if you guys supported or not. I certainly encouraged others to at the moment. I wasn't able to afford it but it does so much good for defending what we stand for his podcasters as Internet creators and they the the F. F. had really really done something interesting on that particular. They said we need X.. Number of dollars to defend this and went out to the community and I think they raised two or three million dollars in donations donations to To fight this patent troll and the you don't hear the F. F. doing that specific thing often and it's hard to beat those folks and And they did so a lot of prior art. Came in and For those of you. That are not familiar with what happened there. This has been ongoing for quite a long time time. And you could probably just Google podcast patent troll so luminary which is quote unquote the net net flicks of podcasting has has slash prices. So they they reduced them what to four ninety nine a month. Yeah it looks like it You know went from seven ninety nine to four ninety nine and You can do an annual plan for like thirty five bucks or so so that brings it down to about three dollars a month so yeah. Apparently they're they're model. Might not be working Dan issues anyway he had Daniel. You suggested this article. What what what's your take on this? I think someday the subscription model will work someday Eh far from now and it has to be done really really well so far I think that luminaries getting I think the most attention from anyone in this space for trying to subscription model so I I applaud them for that. I think though still there specific model is not the model we need in the space for subscription. And and I kind of feel like they're dropping this price because they're not getting enough users. I think that's probably exactly the case. Yeah that's what I'm thinking as. Well they say it's not they say it's because of they had great holiday response to their reduced pricing. So Nice Nice Pimm it but You really wonder what the you know. We're all suspicious of these subscription models. So I think we all can be a little bit of doubting thomases here from that from that from that perspective but one thing that I saw this morning in pod news was linked to an article talks about consent to add your show to an APP or directory and I read through it in. This is from a podcast spins. I didn't know who he was. POD podcast since two thousand seven and I thought I knew all the old timers so you know may dismiss this guy. But he's not happy about basically basically podcast being picked up everywhere and directories APPs and he doesn't like how absurd displaying show and he wishes he had an opportunity to have shows removed. And you know I just kind of add as an ancillary here before we can talk about. This is that you know once in a while. We'll get someone from blueberry that will or someone that's in the Blueberry Director espy removed and we honor that we remove them from the directory but oftentimes will be back a couple of weeks later and say hey can deter me back on John. I've had some listeners complained I can't get the show. They can't get their show over there anymore. So the question is has the mindset changed and podcasting to the point now now where we've got individuals that don't care they will they really want to control distribution to just a few platforms are two point now where people are going to stop wanting to be everywhere and now want to be limited in distribution. I don't fully understand fully. Why it it is that they want this? I can understand that. They don't like the way they're podcast looks in particular op so they might want to be pulled from it or like when luminary throwing this back back to that news story. When Luminary I came out there was all this stuff about it? Looked like they were re hosting files than it ended up that they were using a proxy on their files and stuff and and so a lot of people were saying well. I don't want my podcast on luminary. That's I think more legitimate than just saying. I don't like the way my podcast looks. But then you're limiting your audience audience if you pull out from a podcast APP directory and in a was actually just chuckling a little bit because I thought this individuals been in space since two thousand seven. They should know how this works. Because so many of the APPs don't actually have their own database. They just pull from Apple's API and they what apple has this is in their APP. That's an exact duplicate listing. It's there's nothing you know just the way it looks in. The APP is different. But the actually populate their APP from from Apple so if you want to be an apple you're almost by default GONNA be in ninety percent of the android and apple podcast apps just because people use the the apple podcasts victory. The I think the few exceptions are overcast. And I don't know there's a couple maybe one or two others have their own directories but that actually have have a physical directory. So if you say okay I want to be off podcast or an act like that. Then you're going to be. I guess they can request. We take an up and it just seems odd to me really really does yeah. I don't know Even if you can request to get off of some of them I am pretty sure overcast. Overcast just takes everything from apple like everybody else and I don't think you know I don't know as you can require. I mean you could probably request it. I don't know if still actually grant that I don't know where overcast feeds their source directory. But I know they have their own directory they do get it from apple but then they replicate it to their own database so they can override something before case good so yeah so I guess you know in this topic. We're GONNA talk about here in a few minutes. It's about you know being everywhere but anyway one last news story in Daniel. There's some breaking news from Apple. Yeah Apple has several podcast related jobs posted. Ah I learned about this just recently. They posted these on January tenth thirteenth and fourteenth. Two Thousand Twenty. They need a product designer. PODCASTS A couple of those. They need a business this planner for podcast and some other positions specifically mentioning Apple. podcasts awesome so apple continues to expand their team here so I wonder if they are responding in relation to. What's going on at spotify? So you know nice to see some some pressure. Sure being put on you know we're not apple naysayers here. We're not apple bashers at all. We love with Apple's done to the podcasting community and I think that that it's good though that there's some other people in the space that are making some innovations and maybe making apple just a little bit in up their game so we'll see where.
