Oscar Picks of Wesley Morris from The New York Times

"Wesley Morris is here. Sometimes we fly him out. And we just put you on a whole bunch of podcasts. And we just wind you up and you go yeah Ping Pong Pinball pinball Wesley Yeah Oscars this this weekend yes I can never get through Oscars week without talking to you for at least ten minutes on what's going on. I'm not sure what happened to the Oscars because we have all these prohibitive favorites. There's no drama at all. Everyone thinks nineteen seventeen gonNA win. Isn't that wild. Everyone thinks Phoenix is GonNa win for the joker. Okay yeah that Renee Zellweger is GonNa win for Judy. which I five saying? No no no it made money Brad Pitt for once upon a time And then Laura dern for marriage story yes and those are Kinda done y- everyone the the. They're like huge huge favorites. It doesn't even make sense to bet on them. They're such huge favorites. You'd be like betting on. I don't know the the though Oklahoma City Thunder to beat some division. Three Kinda odd you the only one. That's kind of even best director. Sam Mendes as twenty five favorite. That's what is happening. Is it just. The Internet has made this that the consensus the census of thought now nobody goes against the grain and they just kind of follow the pack. What's happening here? I don't know I think I really feel like increasingly. There are just enough people. I don't know how voters individually or feeling about not pressure to pick a certain person person but the like doing the work to really choose the thing you love the most because every year you read those blind items that variety are Hollywood reporter daily beast. I do yeah And you read these Oscar voters say things and they all have. They all seem to have individual taste rate to hear these. I voters justify why they're voting. They're voting for you. You would think anything could win but that never happens will rarely happens right so I also also believe that in this particular year. I think there's a lot of politics going on like like movie. Industry politics rang. Explain plan so I don't think that people. I think there's a number of things happening. I think people don't like parasite that much. I think they see it. I think that was that was okay. I don't know how they could think that it actually got. It's like Robert Covington right now the NBA trade deadline. It's gotten hyped up too much now. People going wait a secondly. I think it's great it's awesome you're going to see it and you you end up going and you're like yeah it's good but you're not like Oh my God you're right I'm blown away. Yeah Yeah I can't speak but some people are leaving matt a Lake Nona. Nope they're leaving. They're probably just watching it at home but like they're they're watching this movie and they're just Kinda like well okay. I and I'm rich people poor people and I think that I mean I really think that they think it's that simple and I also think good. I really liked it. I didn't think it was like the best picture picture the year I why do but you do really. I was the case in a minute. I think it's just okay. The very simple thing is it takes a story. It takes an idea that I can't believe that in a hundred and you know twenty years of movies. Nobody's ever done before nobody's ever fought to turn the class. Divide into into a game in this particular way. Yeah and by the time they get to the sect by the time the father other by the time the father gets the job. So the third the third introduction of the the glomming onto this family. I'm just I was just laughing. I was is laughing with happiness at the brilliant to this idea. He's such a great of these nine movies and most like almost all of them are perfectly made. I would say that's the one that surprised me the most in terms of how tight and smart and and surprising it was the one thing I don't like goodbye it is the ending but in talking to people about who also sort of ending is anticlimactic but it also needs to be there none. Nobody could come up with a better trending. So this is the endings. Movie needs to have this elegiac sort of tragic fantasy ending. I liked once upon a time. The most I mean and as you know I also love them. We did a podcast about that on this podcast. Back in August we wait. Let's go back though we dated Rewatch ables. That's coming this week about about it already. Yeah well we do one Oscar movie every year O- of the nine area to get out on time. That seems fair. Yeah UH-HUH I think forward and for our versus Ferrari of those nine movies. That in little women I think are the most those are going to prove to be the most re watchable bowl of those. I'm so glad you said that. I feel like those have become the underrated. I'm not sure what happened. In each case moves. I thought little women was excellent. Women Soak so good the crazy thing about this year. Is there a two stores. I just wrote a story about this for the paper and the the the maddening thing about these nine movies please. And I'll get back to the into back to what people are saying about who they are. Why nine hundred seventeen is going to win for political reasons Movie movie industry political reasons. But I just read a piece about like how. This is the first year since they expanded the field ten. Move to up to ten movies that I have liked every single one of these movies more or less except for one and I don't like joker either. Yeah I don't like never really really align this year on what we didn't like I like that I didn't. I don't like joker I didn't have fun. I thought his performance was awesome. But I've seen a lot of movies that whereas the performance was awesome. But I'd necessarily loved the movie right I don't even I don't even Joaquin. Phoenix is one of my four favourite male actors. And this does not I feel like this is the first time he is looking for a character as like we are watching him do work mark. The I think it's done before you start shooting in this movie Part of it is. He is playing a person who's changing but he's always playing people who were undergoing some sort of ecological little change wasn't he's so much more interesting in the master. Oh everything he was doing. If you're going to start there then I'm like why did you give just give Antonio Banderas the Oscar. I mean that's where you're GONNA start but I'm saying like I don't know why I took this movie for people to like. Here's his Oscar. Movie when he was so good the pastor I mean the thing that was more interesting performance interesting thing that we should talk about. Is that like he is one of those people were. He's just a person who is owed right like it's he's been he's a set of a woman quote suffered so long just give him just give it to him not that he's begging for it because because when he took this part I was like oh well you know he clearly. He clearly understands with businesses going and I would never accuse him ever of like being being interested in getting any prizes for the work. He's doing but I also feel like there is a sense that he's been nominated three other times. I think maybe maybe four do you remember how lost to the master who who when they're You're talking keep your point going on anyway. I feel like if I sat here and thought about it. I'd come my with but I'm not going to remember those thirteen Two thousand thirteen. So we have. Is that Matthew mcconaughey. Now it's not McConnell. Now he lost a Daniel Day. Lewis Link Oh well that's that's just bad luck for Joaquin Phoenix. I remember having issue with that at the time you should have. I mean just just as a matter of history you should rostker you blaspheme. He's fine. He's fine I thought Athletes Ship

Listen, you already hate like one fucking idiot who blabs too much on the radio, I found another one. What are you gonna do? All we got is this. I mean, who cares? Twenty nine hundred people are gonna try to take us down might as. Well, just fuck it say what we feel Marielle, dude. I feel that it was distantly voicemails here. We have people call in a prerecorded call. Let's do pretend to be gay. He probably advice. My best friend has a gay best friend who we've known for past year. He's super gay, and he all of a sudden comes out at the bar with us for year. And he started crying to us saying he's in love with my friend. What am I my best friend? And he says he's pretending to be gay. And all of a sudden, he literally becomes a straight guy his in pretending to be gay for a year. And we have changed in front of him. Then all of the things like he's Aachen super gay for a year but secretly three, and we just don't know what to do and how to deal with this. 'cause we have all of our thoughts with him. And we literally have to be around him all the time. And we he probably day just to get you think. So no one straight pretending to be gay for year for years a long time. I mean, that's some night is a walk time to pretend to be. Because some method acting Daniel Day-Lewis shit let you committed to the role. Yeah. I think if you can do that you fucking sick. Like, you're you're manipulative sick. What's what's the goal? What's the gecko? So the girls he said she said, she he was in love with one of the girls. But wouldn't you just try and fucking them? "But again Twitter doesn't have to have a consistent standards. They've market dominance. It's pretty astonishing. How the left will continue to shutdown debate with no good excuse for doing. So simply because their confirmation bias is so incredibly strong when you have an agenda. It allows you to run roughshod it'll really doesn't allow you to run roughshod over your own supposed central principles you can tell where people's real principles. Why by where by which principles people are willing to violate in pursuit of those primary principals so Twitter says it's a free speech platform a place for people to speak out and debates, but they're real priority is not that the real priority, social leftism, and when the two come into conflict, social, leftism overrules anything having to do with free speech. Good on Joe Rogan and Tim pool for exposing the insane. Hypocrisy and stupidity of the. The of the Twitter the Twitter leadership Alrighty time for some things. I like, and then some things that I hate so things that I like there's a movie that is now available on Amazon prime it's called. You're never really here. It's sort of a new fangled take on taxi driver. Frankly, I think it's better movie than taxi driver. And it's with Joaquin Phoenix. Who is in fact, our finest living, actor, the only other competitor would probably be Daniel day Lewis. But he is retired Joaquin Phoenix turns in another fantastic performance. When you're talking about people who just inhabit a role where you don't even think of them as an actor. They're just the role Joaquin Phoenix as the guy the basic plot is essentially taxi driver, he is a he is kind of taxi driver. He is basically a veteran who has had some bad experiences suicidal veteran, and he has hired by a by a middleman to go save this this state legislators daughter from sex slavery, and let's just say nothing. Good into. Questions. How many are they won't guys size front door set guy of top. After the tone. Please leave a message. Manacle wants to see right away. State Senator Albert von TOTO teenage daughters, missing leave got an anonymous text with an address. I've heard of these places. Said you were brutal. Andy, I wouldn't hurt them. So he he did win the the best best actor did Joaquin Phoenix for for his role in this. He's driven actress, honestly, it gives me hope for the joker movie. So the joker movie is going to be directed by Scorsese. Correct. And Joaquin Phoenix plays the joker that is fantastic casting. So looking forward to that the movie is very brutal is definitely rated R. You were never really hear available on Amazon prime. Okay. Time for some things that I hate. So let's talk a little bit about HR. One HR one is the Nancy Pelosi led house houses first priority, and basically restructures voting and voter ID all across the country in violation of federalism. States are generally supposed to set the standards and state redistricting is suppose set the standards for how voting is done on the state level HR one, according to the Heritage Foundation seizes the authority of states to regulate voter registration and the voting process by forcing states to implement early voting automatic voter registration same day, registration online, voter registration and no fault absentee ballots. Balloting, all of which are the devil's playground for voter fraud early voting first of all should not be allowed except in really bad circumstances, or unless you're remember the military or something early voting is bad because a lot of news breaks right before an election, second automatic voter registration. You should not be automatically registered to vote because maybe you don't wanna vote. Same day registration is absurd. Doesn't allow you to actually check with the person is who they say they are online voter registration is very difficult to control no fault absentee balancing again. That's that's a problem because people vote absentee instead of simply going down to their polling place makes it more difficult to verify their vote. This creates a lot more chaos at the polls, which is exactly the opposite of what we need. It will hurt voted her because everybody will early vote it will degrade the accuracy of registration lists by registering. Individuals from state databases such as DMV welfare offices in California. You can have a driver's license. If you're an illegal immigrant, so if you ought to medically are registered from the state database..

That movie explains how politics some of it that would leave you slightly uncomfortable. Can be the hero when the times call for a political solution, and that's one of the very few movies in the last thirty years in which politics, a central character. And it's it's essence is heroin absolutely making deals doing what you need controlling the right? Exactly. And that evening, lots of things that voice of his. I mean, I I mean I had already fallen in love with ABRAHAM LINCOLN. And of course, I then fell in love with Daniel day Lewis. I couldn't believe how he embodied the person that I'd lived with for ten years. I used to wake up in the morning with ABRAHAM LINCOLN think about when I went to bed at night. And there was Daniel. Now, I had a real guy, and I got to know him very, well, he took an entire year to become ABRAHAM LINCOLN. I would send him books. I would text within my teeth. My kids tease me that I learned to tax. So I could continue to communicate with him. Learn to tax. Yeah. But, but he just he understood the man he understood exactly what you said that it wasn't just statesmanship. He understood his sense of humor. And his sadness and his melancholy, and his brilliant political genius. And.

"Jesus christ. Savior? Do. Wow. Paul, Dino and Daniel day Lewis scene from the two thousand seven film. There will be blood action mentioned the slapping sounds that you're hearing at the end of that scene. That's Paul Dino's character, like slapping, the devil slapping, the devil out of Daniel day Lewis. So getting even with Daniel day Lewis who has beaten a mob earlier in in the film that that scene. It's almost like this incredible operatic duet. Did you think of it that way when you're making it was sort of intense just to hear that, you know, some time for me. I am I was sort of cast the last minute. And I started about four days after I was cast in this part. You were initially cast as the preachers, brother. Yeah. And then they moved you to be the the teen preacher is that. Why those two characters became twins were they not twins. Four brothers brothers. But now that you were playing both rose. So they saw something in you where they wanted you to play the bigger part. Yes, I suppose so but also. So I mean sort of sort of why I was going back. There is just listening to that clip. You know, gave me a feeling which was I just remember the two days before I started spending sunup to sundown in that church, alone allies church, and that was a really sort of beautiful couple days just sort of trying to learn the script and make contact with the character and in this empty church. I I don't know why that's what I went back to it was your idea to to learn your part while sitting in the church while I was just suddenly on location. And I was like what? Okay, how day one is Monday. Okay. I'm just going to go to the church and learn scenes. It's funny 'cause that clip to quite a long seen. So that was sort of seen we filmed for all day long. And I believe our first setup was probably some kind of wider be some kind of master shot, and I slapped Daniel as you said in in towards the end of the scene, and I think we were supposed to once we get that part to stop you. Because what we're gonna be shooting this all day. And and I remember the first take forgetting and just slapping him many times. And as soon as we cut I remembered that I was supposed to stop and I went oh God. And I think Nick, I even had a little bit retinas. I and my God what is that? And he just said, that's how you do it. You know? And I was like, okay. My guest is Paul deneau. He co wrote and directed the new film adaptation of the Richard Ford novel wildlife, we'll talk more after a break and hear about what it's like to be beaten up in films, including in there will be blood and Kevin Whitehead will review a new reissue of music. "This is such an obvious answer which is yes he belongs on the pay per view that's the end of it but to try to conceptualize it with with people that always jump into the space and go what he's not deserving our he'd say yeah i don't i don't know what that means i banged my head on the wall i just simply do not know what that means are people willing to pay for him you got five fights tell me what once people are most likely willing to pay for that's your main card that's it it doesn't come down to he won this or he won that it just it just doesn't work that way and that's all of entertainment that is not unique to the fight world the fight world just always spills over to a mindset that people had of sports in their careers and their little leagues where everybody gets to play the entertainment model says whoever can bring in the most eyeballs gets to make the most money i do not believe that anybody would tell me the rock is as good of an actor as daniel day lewis or of ed norton or of johnny depp the rock is the highest paid of all of them and deserves to be because he brings in the most fans that's what it comes down to see how much jumanji made over last year it was a christmas movies made over billion dollars really really he was in the right he did that with kevin hart right yeah kevin hart jack black and karen gillan yeah yeah it was mashed up an old robin williams movie was it good.

"So going into it there's all this hype all of this energy behind it because we wanted to see this last performance and to see if it was going to be another daniel day lewis performance that would get dominated slash win an academy award so this film is based green ed is set in 1950s london dinner they lewis plays reynolds woodcock who is a world renowned dressmaker and furlan address bigger briskly that nobody really likes but they tolerate him because of what he does because of the work that he is able to create because of the art that he is evil to give people talk about someone who is not very likeable daniel day lewis as as a character reynold woodcock is not likeable he is not a good person in multiple people throughout the movie call him out for that his sister is played by leslie men ville who crew russia's it she is so so good in this film because she knows her brother knows all of a little eccentricities as a all this takes in whatever and does not care if they need to get something done and he is just kind going about it the wrong way she will call him out that was great but really what this movie is about is a relative newcomer this actress vicky clips uh died probably butchered that i haven't looked it up on youtube to see how to pronounce it just from luxembourg sodas leg cleats or something sorry vicky you're fantastic.
