Robustness to Unforeseen Adversarial Attacks
"I'm I'm Daniel Daniel King King Credit Graduate Student at Stanford University in the Computer Science Department Pad. I am or the Stanford on lab where we work on. Deploying machine learning efficiently Easily also for this particular. I was also volunteered. Open I for some time and tell me a little bit about your specific areas of research. What's most of your time in Grad School? Spent looking at considering. Yeah so Grad School. What I've been focusing on is trying to understand a how to actually deploy machine learning efficiently reliably and effectively. What we've noticed that one machine learning researchers have created these amazing machine learning models that do really well under certain circumstances let the real world is really complicated. There's a lot of issues that crop up. When actually deploying machinery models ranging from Michigan being expensive to deploy ranging from Trinidad of being noisy all the way down to worrying about attacks from adversaries. I've been focusing on trying to understand those issues when it comes to deploy the amazing technology that many machine learning researchers have been making. Yeah the paper I invited you on to talk about his title testing robustness against unforeseen adversaries. And it's interesting you frame that as a deployment issue because in my mind when I think of deploying male I'm thinking of how there's no perfect system in my opinion you know we have onyx files and different stuff like that. You can try but for some reason it's not as easy as it seems like it should be. Do you have any thoughts about why the I guess what I picture is? More lower level aspects of that are still kind of challenging for a lot of people that deploy absolutely so machine. Learning is very different than essentially all software so a lot of software comes into play when applying machine learning. But I don't think there's been a lot of understanding the community both the Research Committee and the industry community and what the difference between deploying standard software underplaying machine. Learning are so as you say. There's a lot of low level. Things for example like onyx files or actually taking a towards wallace say or while and converting to runtime engine. But that's actually being smoothed out. I think in the next year so we're GONNA be seeing a lot more of that. So for example serving has released some stuff but I think at a higher level. There's a lot of issues regarding how to combine data and Code that. We don't really know the answers to yet. And that's part of what my research deals with. A lot of other folks are thinking about as well. Yeah these adversarial attacks if I think about standing up my M. L. Model and exposing it via API. Just give that away where anyone can post to it. Or maybe someone's very clever and figures out how to get to my API for some reason they're going to post. What could be a sizable thing? An image file or something like that that has a ton of data and while that machine learning model it's a function it maps from the full input space to output space. Still we have these challenges. You think this is some sort of temporary thing where this adversarial game is going to eventually be solved or are we just dealing with a very hard problem. That will always be sort of cat and mouse. It's hard for me to predict the future but if you look at standard security ignoring machine learning there's been a cat and mouse game. Basically since computers have been invented sixty seventy years so if I had to guess I would say that. We're unlikely to solve the problem exactly. But I'm hoping that we can at least make it much much harder to attack. Machine learning systems in broadly. Speaking what are these adversarial attacks for anyone? Who hasn't heard of him yet? An adversary attack is think of it. As a procedure to generate an input that will fool machine learning model often for some nefarious mean so to give an extreme example. You might imagine posting a sticker on a stop sign that changes a perception system friction and accelerating car from stop sign to say sixty mile per hour speed limit sign which would cause erroneous behavior in a vehicle and might even cause physical harm now. I've looked into a number of these different techniques and there seemed to be more coming out by the hour. Some of them need the model and some of them need the day to set and some of them need not require too much of anything. What do you see sort of the garden or the taxonomy of these different kinds of attacks? And how much a little bit access helps or hinders. Yes as you say. There's a wide spectrum of attacks. I'll roughly them down. But these categorisations very rough and the tax can span different categorisations as well a high level. There's what I'll call white box and black box. Attacks White box attacks assume access to the MODEL AND BLACKBOX ATTACKS. Don't assume exits the model but assume you can query the model for example in a white box attack you'll have the weights and basically everything a blackbox tax. You might just have. Api access so for example Google's image classification API as an example of where he can query. But you don't have access to the model weights themselves. That's on the model side. There's also as you say a tax on the data side and here the threat model is slightly different. Typically the third as soon as you can tamper with some fraction of the data and by tampering with a small fraction of the data. This will cause the model to have eroneous outputs on typically specific patterns or be in general.

"Therefore just social distance yourself from other people and let's get this thing done a lot got it got it got it bad but I really really enjoy watching him do his thing he is. He's he's honest he's got to stay home. I'll he's overdoing it. You're doing it just right. Yeah exactly overreact. It's okay but don't but don't bring people down now be cool with people understand. They're going to what you're going through right. Yeah I was really bummed out and telling. My sister was bummed out yesterday. Because I'm a very snugly person I like to hug and cuddle and I'm not going to be able to see my boyfriend for a while because we'd have to fly back and forth and I'm not going to be able to see my sister my mom or my dad. Those are the people I snuggle. So am I going to snuggle? I got a dog. I wasn't question Daniel Daniel Ghani. What kind of dog do you want? What did she say? What did she say one? I can put a bow tie on. You want a dog that has a neck. Yes neck doll. Well you know some dogs can pull off a bow tie. Some can't and I really want one who can carry a good boat. Yeah no there's no they don't have an yeah bulldog in Bowtie. Not NOT THAT HOT. Snuggling your snuggling. I'm an eater. I went out there and I. I bought a ton of food. I have eaten all of it. I think everyone needs to think about that. Because all the people who stocked up on supplies at least my friends. They're like man. I'm just eating my way through my stock last August like Hurricane Snacks. The hurricane gets there. Well just to keep myself. Outta the panic heating thing. I'm freezing stuff like freeze. It just goes so if you want to cook something that's frozen. It's premeditated thing plan ahead. Let that mother thought. My problem is nice. Click eighty frozen. Because I'm afraid of need it so I just keep going and buying new stuff.
Kennedy Ife death: Family cleared of 'exorcism' killing
"Okay prepare yourself. This is a bummer. August twenty. Sixteen paramedics are called to the FAA household. On Lancaster Avenue in Enfield North London Harry. Fa Rang to say that his brother Kennedy had quote gone a bit cold after feeling dehydrated and a bit weary is a British thing. It reminds me of Monty Python. The meaning of his leg was bitten. Sort of off. It might be. Yeah I love it I like it too. They sound so much classier than we do in America. Yeah it was dangling there was just GonNa plum ripped off so two and a half years later. Kennedy Phase Family was in court his parents Kenneth and Josephine and five brothers. Roy Harry Colonist Samuel and Daniel were on trial accused of manslaughter. According to some Kennedy phase parents and brothers believed that he was possessed by evil spirits and set about curing him with prayer and restraint that led to his death basically. They tried to perform an exorcism. This is not something that an amateur should try to do. Not Bring in a professional. You wouldn't Clean Your Own Sofa and expect good result. Why cast as above out of a loved one on your own. You wouldn't steal a policeman's CAP. Well there's an obscure reference. Somebody tell us what that's from and You will earn our undying respect so prosecution claimed that Kennedy who worked as an. It consultant was restrained for sixty seven hours in the seven bedroom mansion in Enfield and he was treated like an animal or detainee. The family described themselves as charismatic Christians and they held religious beliefs and thought that because Kennedy had become quote bewitched That they needed to cast out those those demons. The family together And according to the Lincoln page The Dad of the household Kenneth. Fa is a prominent public policy analysis. That's not a word analyst who had gone and advised for World Bank and the British government so later in Police Interview Colin. Fa One of the brothers stated that Kennedy had been behaving normally up until August. Thirteen That's when he ate at a Chinese buffet and started complaining of pain in his throat and he was finding it hard to sleep. Maybe he just had an allergy to peanuts or something. It's possible maybe he had indigestion who knows about five days later. He was complaining of seed in his stomach. He said that a python or a snake was inside of him. And this is according to Call an FA. He said that Kennedy believed that he had a demon inside his body wanting to kill him and this is what he told the court on August. Nineteen Kennedy became aggressive again. This is all according to the family during their trial. They said that he bit his father and threatened to cut off his own penis rather than taking him to a doctor His mother who is known to their church as sister Joe. She sought advice from their minister. Colin went onto describe. That Kennedy had become aggressive He was shouting about the mark of the beast and When the volunteers from the church came to the house one of them His name was Andrew and his last name. I'm not even going to begin to try to pronounce He was a volunteer at Jesus Sanctuary Ministries He prayed for Kennedy at the House along with two other ministers known as brother Peter and Brother Emeka and he told the court when I arrived. I was informed that we've been instructed to attend the address of sister. Joe To pray for Kennedy. They went to sister. Joe's house and They were gathered in the living room. He said that he saw Kennedy laying down on the city. He had a phone in his hand. He seemed to be typing something on his phone texting. Or whenever Andrew said I said high he said high and he looked me directly in the eyes. He did look unwell. He looked tired and as they began praying for him. Kennedy's father walked into the room with a man from different church and this is according to the volunteer from Jesus Sanctuary Ministries so Andrew added. I believed he was a pastor but I had never seen him before. Sister Jo asked if that man could take over he prayed for God to keep Kennedy. And he'll him. He then said that he was actually kind of angry. That he'd been asked to come out there and then was asked to leave immediately because some Rando Dude showed up. I'm paraphrasing of course. I think it was brother Rando Dude but he did report that Kennedy looked like he had a fever and that he was not as bright as he had been in. The past. One of the lawyers asked. Did you see Kennedy bound at any time during your stay and Andrew replied no and then they clarified. He was conscious. He greeted you Did you see that? There was any time where Kennedy appeared like he was not in his right mind and and he said no he. He seemed okay so he left Monday. August twenty second another brother Harry. Faa phoned nine nine nine and said that Kennedy was struggling to breathe. Paramedics arrived but Kennedy was already dead. The court heard that when police arrived at the House. The family was carrying out what they called an attempted. Resurrection Kennedy was laying face down on the floor and they were standing over him saying Kennedy. I command you to rise in the name of Jesus this did not work and during the trial a prosecutor. Tim Little claimed that the family had restrained Kennedy for sixty seven hours before laying him out on the ground and trying to resuscitate him when he stopped breathing. What kind of restraint they did. They go into detail was handcuffed and they used cable ties. Like Zip Taif my God. I can't find a comfortable position when I have the flu Yeah no this was not a great situation and I imagine it was scary for everyone involved especially the one being Zip ties tied. Who believes that? He's filled with demons. According to the prosecutor the family put misguided religious beliefs above this young man's health and wellbeing whether or not he was possessed by a demon or evil spirits. Obvious Common Sense concludes that he needed help. A pathologist found more than sixty injuries on Kennedy all consistent with forceful restraint. Did he find any snakes in his stomach? No snakes in not a single one that would have been a cool ending Sister Joe Mom said that the restraint was justified because Kennedy Post threat to himself but neither sister Joe or Dad said they knew where the handcuffs came from They also struggled with where the cable ties came from each suggesting. That media workman had left them from work that he had done years before. But one of the brothers Roy later told jurors that he bought the handcuffs on Ebay as part of a abandoned plan to go into part-time security. Work Yeah why? Did they have further on them? Sir No one was sure of who put the handcuffs or the restraints on Kennedy and everyone said Oh I don't know who did it no one saw any particular abuses being Laid on him by any particular person. It was just kind of this group. Effort that No one had any recollection of exactly how the events took place. Maybe they were the ones possessed. Maybe after the police were called Roy. One of the brothers told jurors that he panicked and took the handcuffs out of the House and threw them over the neighbor's fence. Which to me says that they knew that this was not the correct course of action. Sure if you're hiding evidence you you knew that this wasn't the right thing to be doing. Mr Little said that Claims that Kennedy was only held down. Temporarily were outlandish that. There's no way that the injuries caused him by these handcuffs and these zip ties were created just from the the individual instances that they said that they had to restrain him that he was obviously restrained for a lengthy period of time. Which because this whole process took place over? The course of three days leads me to believe. He was probably restrained for three days. The siblings all made the same choice. Not TO GIVE EVIDENCE AND BE. Subjected to the same scrutiny. According to the prosecutor however Kenneth Josephine Mom and Dad Roy Harry Colin Daniel Daniel. Daniel and Samuel were all cleared of manslaughter false imprisonment and causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult between the dates of August nineteen and twenty third 2016. It seems as though because they held these religious beliefs and they held them deeply that the jury felt that they were not liable for this man's cardiac arrest and death even though they held him down and restrained him and caused his death but they didn't according to the jury.

Don Johnson on His New Film 'Knives Out'
"This is popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies and there's a movie now that is a WHO Dunnit of sorts but to me. It's the most fun that I've had at the movies movies this year. It's called knives out. And one of the stars is my guest today. Don- Johnson here especially little torture chamber. We Ah the black inside the black kind event also. Well people confess when they sit in this chair. I'll tell you anything anything. Anything he wanted to unburden yourself on. This is a you know I'm I'm ready. I'm ready to just leave. Just push the button. Okay Yeah who did it. No I is a movie that actually begins with the murder but it's not like we know anything well. The interesting thing is is that in the first ten ten minutes you see the actual death actual murder you see and so without knowing without knowing what you're meant to see or what what what you know there. And then you spend the next COUPLA hours having a blast watching these incredibly beautifully flog people entitled I really it just Hilarious it's Christopher amherst character that murdered right and he's having his eighty fifth birthday and yes this all star cast including you. I looked at that movie into any one of these bastards could adopt. Yeah that cast. Is You know the the interesting thing that happened. Is that when we got together to make this movie. It all came together pretty fast and we we arrived in. We shot out of south side of Boston towards Wellesley in this in that house in a big mansion. Yeah and and We all had these new enormous trailers not more than two hundred yards away from the house. we never used them. All we did was as we go downstairs in the basement of this house and we'd picked a room a lot like this a lot more friendly but I had a little more humor to it not much but we would sit around and tell stories about the movies. We'd done it asked you know I'd asked Daniel Daniel Daniel Craig about you know what. Tell me about that stunt and tell me what you know about about this and that and he had asked me about things that that We had done Christopher plummer summer and and I've known Christopher for a long time we we held down a couple of barstools and in San Francisco. I'm not shocked. And that and Jamie Lee Curtis who plays. You're pissed. Oh she he's still see. Well I worked out pretty well because she plays my wife and the thing and I showed up for work she started bossing me around and I said okay. Why not and captain? America's your son Chris Evans. Yeah this normal. Sure everybody's just hanging out there that hey birthplaces and there's a lot of movies that I see sometimes where I think the actors actors are having a great time. But I'm not in this case it's red from what you guys were doing to the audience when we see I know it's infectious. It really is. Yeah and that's harder actually think you know the the the the extraordinary extraordinary thing about this We didn't have a table read. We didn't rehearse we just showed up on the first day and you no. It's not an uncomplicated. No people have to and so we showed up on the first day. And we we start to go and I and and I hit a I hit the tone that I think is right. and Lo and behold Jamie Lee tosses the ball back to me and Scott the same tone and then we started to roll and everybody else sort of you know did their thing and we kind of brought that sense of joy in and in the moment to the to the to the to the To two knives out and I think that that's what you feel. I think that that joy in that fun kind of ride is what you feel like. You're lifted up. But it has a very contemporary temporary kind of spin on it. Yeah you should explain Richard who is a bit of a rat bastard. Yeah well they're they're all horrible people there are they are but he. He is kind of the personification of the Great. I loved him because he doesn't do. Anything doesn't have a job. AUB doesn't do anything he just you know. He's the personification of entitled because he lives off of His wife in the family and all that stuff I sort of played him like a like a one of those country club sizes. Just kind of walking around with half a buzz on over time. It is whatever you want but yeah people you need to see this. And when they do they can thank us for it. I can thank you. You're welcome. You're welcome bureaus. It's a good time and then I have to bring this up too because it's so great is watchman on HBO. You know I've seen you do a lot of great things things right from the beginning. You know even Miami Vice where when people think of it now and they think of how you're dressed and the style that you had and the suits the cheese and the t shirts and the whole deal no socks yeah started a complete fashion trend but that was a really good show. Yeah I was a little ignoring by in the beginning when there's Oh it's just fluff at style over substance and I was going well not so fast you know we we managed to get had some you know a golden globe. And you're gone. What does that mean? It's true But yeah no I've I've been fortunate in that I've had some Some meaty parts get to play over the years and I just think I mean you'll show Abo thing is is is ah trip. Sorry to interrupt with that Help the the the the writer creator of Damon Lindelof was I think I gave him his first job on Nash Bridges. You don't quite remember no way I mean I know that I I saw now I see. Yeah Yeah and then he went on of course to To do lost and forgiving him. No no no. He's true they should. I should be getting away. From all guys Sean Ryan and Carlton Carlton Cues and all the I mean. So many people came out of that That little incubator. I had gone up there. Those shows Nash Bridges and Miami. I swear long running shows which you're playing cops and I remember hearing you do an interview once and said I'm done with that you know and here you are as sheriff drugged God. You Judge Judge for judge hanging around the hanging around. But there's something in that role on. I know I get killed if I say anything too much about it but you know we probably both would. Well you'd be specially killed but I don't know how you get killed yeah to do this. But it's such a wonderfully complex charming character Thank you might have many many other level the NFL. What's happening? Yeah well when I see an emmy nomination for that too in your future Oh bless your heart. Don't vote for the Emmy Okay. So it's useless. I think you know every listen every reality start somewhere with a rumor. Okay talk to John. You heard it here therefore I give you know I'm not getting it's make it happen. Yeah that is a lot of fun to do too because it was. I didn't have a character who can be sitting at a family dinner and get up and do Rogers and Hammerstein and make everybody feel. I WANNA be around this guy. It was just very ballsy and Fabulous to what you know. That's the way I felt about it because Damon column. He wrote me this beautiful letter and of course if you want an actor's attention you just write him a letter and tell him how great he is and you've got his undivided attention. I guaranteeing I don't care who it is. It's like Kryptonite right. You know. Start Bragging on an actor and telling them how great they are. They'll do anything and I fell victim to that. He came in. Yeah Yeah you're the God. And so he Lewis. Is this Lewis right walk on. I love it but he asked me to come in and he told me he kinda told me that story. The sort of long grades plans for for watching it. I don't think he wanted to scare me off so he didn't. He didn't tell me the whole thing but he told me enough and I and I kind of felt like well. I'm in on the joke and I like that. You know and and I also think that it's an interesting thing to have My fans wouldn't expect it no one expects and it's kind of A. It's kind of like one of those things where I can get away with that these days where maybe couldn't before

Our Company Has Problems
"Back. In two thousand fourteen I laid out the premise of what I was doing. I was trying to start a business while simultaneously telling the story of starting a business in a podcast and it was going to focus on all the little details onto what kinds of shoes I was. GonNa wear to my first ever investor meeting my wife. Nazanin House need didn't like the shoes I'd chosen. They're fine. They're just there'd be a higher chance that he's GonNa give you money if you're not wearing running shoes dining that's through these he's meal issues that I can wear that my feet don't hurt. I ended up wearing those durkee shoes to the pitch was not successful not surprisingly and I kept recording recorded difficult Goshi with my co-founder tense confrontations with my wife other pitches to investors. I thought I was making a six to eight episode mini series but it turned out. I was launching. I showed that would continue for many years and we document all kinds of milestones in the history of this new company that I was making for example recorded the moment I partnered partner with my co founder Matt so the final thing to discuss which we had put on the agenda for last time style up our conversation of where we see this relationship going yeah checking in on a recorded choosing a name for the company Gimblett what sure easy to spell like madmen sexy. I'm okay documented undocumented the moment my wife Nazanin in the beginning worked as a TV producer eventually joined me in Matt to help run GIMBLETT. We're going to work together. Look look at US going a New York living the dream. Yeah Okay it's S. and over time the PODCAST. I'd accidentally started did branched out into new territory. We hired a new host from Gimblett media startup. I'm Lisa Chow any big success requires looking failure in the and Lisa started following other founders launching their own companies to women who rushed a dating APP several friends from college who actually meaning to started the billion dollar streaming company company twitch and most recently she told the story of Eva Moskowitz the controversial founder of Success Academy one of the fastest growing education startups in the world and we continue to follow it what was going on here. Gimblett the growth of our company from our first few employees through our twentieth or fiftieth and eventually our hundredth we documented our attempts to increase diversity diversity to decrease burnout and manage the chaos that inevitably comes with running a fast growing startup and here. I am now five years after that. I started episode dropped to document a bold new chapter and give them a history spotify. I'm a big user. Dave big user no call we are as well this is footage from the CNBC program squawk on the street dip so that aired February sixth twenty one thousand nine hundred the host. Jim Cramer and David Faber are about to welcome guest to the program this morning and this is big special exclusive interview from quite excited about this spotify scope boundaries Daniel Daniel. I've got an issue right right up front broadcast. I understand they are red hot and what we want is agriculture. I didn't think that a music company would do it but I do think that an audio audio company would do it and that's what this is about as an yeah. It's it's really about expanding our mission from just being about music to being about all audio and being being the world's leading audio platform and the thing that they're talking about here. The reason Daniela showed up at squawk on the street to talk to Jim Cramer and David Faber is because of an announcement inch that had just come out that morning spotify was acquiring to podcast companies hundreds of millions of dollars podcasting technology company called anchor at podcasting content company based in Brooklyn called Gimblett in this season of start up the final season and we're going to wrap up the story that we started over five years ago and I can't imagine a better final chapter than the one. We're about to tell you for the next several episodes. We're GONNA share with you. What an acquisition looks like from the inside and the first season I learned that starting a company is a very emotional experience what I didn't know then is that selling one that's pretty emotional and just a quick warning here at the top there is some swearing in this episode through down the left hand side his revenue split out by show or property so that so just the B. B. Through this tape from a meeting in late March of two thousand eighteen almost a full year before spotify's announcement on NBC that they had acquired Gimblett back back during this meeting the idea that a year from now we'll be selling our company is really hard to imagine row forty. One is the prophet line. The voice you hear is Jim Grau our VP of finance he's walking a few of us on the company's leadership team me not seen and Matt through the numbers for the year and the numbers they're not great what burn rate projected burn rate for the air. Yes if you will to burn rate in other words how much more we spending than we were making alter now. Spending more than we made was always part of the plan. That's what most startups do early on and just nine months earlier. We had reached a big round of funding fifteen million dollars. The the plan was to invest a lot of that into making more shows hiring more people. We wanted that big chunk of money to last for a while two and a half years meaning. We wanted to burn about about six million a year but this meaning. Jim is telling us that right now and early two thousand eighteen. It's looking like we're going to burn a lot more than that. So something like probably ten million eleven million million. A month is probably a where we're headed towards. If we don't uh change some things in other words we keep going the way we're going by the end of the year almost that entire investment we just got James. We'll be gone and that's because a lot of the things we assumed would happen. Didn't we assumed audiences would grow but instead they plateaued are launches had not done as well as they had in the past and some of our biggest shows with the largest audiences still weren't making money because we couldn't sell ads on them shows like science versus. The last season was very sold out this. This season is not super sold so what's wins empty spots how threat in terms of how many sponsor consoled a what's the percentage. What's the what's the sell through rates over ten percent fifteen percent ten percents old. That's a little bit. That's counting the next season to probably like twenty twenty to twenty five percents old. Why is it that that it cabinet bed bad because if we can't make money on our biggest shows what does that mean for the rest of the company because the fact is Gimblett specialty specialty up until this point our business model basically had been to make kind of podcast costs a lot of money. I kinda requires big reporting trips large teams of four or five five producers and editors and engineers. The kind of show had a proven track record for example this American Life Cereal Radio Lab. They're all that kind of podcast and that Kinda show for the first couple couple of years Gimblett. It worked for us but at the time of this meeting for years into the company there was another kind of show that was getting more and more popular a kind of show that wasn't what we specialized. Stan shows like pod save America and my favorite murder the DAX shepard podcast these shows rely on a charismatic oast connecting with fans and they're much cheaper it to produce and the audiences for these shows are huge way bigger than the audience for any Gimblett podcast these shows we never mentioned them by name during this this meetings but they lurk behind everywhere the conversation because of what their success seems to suggest for US business that maybe we are spending a lot of money making in something that people don't want anymore to me in particular. That was a scary thought if if it ends up being that we can't make there's no business camel to support like good programming. That fucking sucks yeah. We're in this world that prioritizes like cheap you know cheap mass market and and like we definitely need to start doing that but I like that sucks having to make the different kinds of show that was scary to me that it wasn't as scary to Matt to Matt was scary was me and my resistance to change. It seemed to ignore the basic math that a show made by just a producer and a charismatic host. The comes out frequently finds a big audience that show will be more profitable than anything we were making right then. The thing that keeps me up at night is like we're super fucked if we don't have a much lower cost per episode model of production and right now. We don't have that we we don't know how to do it. There's a large chunk of organization has to reinvent the way it does what it does if we just continue on our current pace. I don't think there are things that are going to improve like I don't don't think all of a sudden audiences have just start growing and like we'll get better but we can make decisions to improve revenue. Yeah yeah absolutely yeah but I don't want Asli. This is a conversation about cost as well as you when when I listened back to this tape now all I hear is everything that is not being said the tension between me and Matt this just sitting beneath the surface tension over the fundamental question of what kinds of shows Gimblett should make and what kinds of shows we shouldn't. This new financial pressure was facing it put that tension front and center are started producers Chris. Mary Molly Mystic Interviewed Matin me separately about this time and how things felt between us. Tell me about your relationship with Alex last spring spring two thousand eighteen. Here's a low point. I guess the Metaphor I wanNA use as like a romantic relationship. Last last spring was the real time where it was like. We've been married for like seven years. We have kids we have a mortgage and and and we are fighting and I don't think we ever said the word divorce.
Hostless Emmys Hit All-Time Ratings Low
"The Emmy awards were last night and for a second year in a row the ratings hit it and all time low but bad news for broadcast. TV was good news for streaming joining me to recap the ceremony is the chief TV critic at Variety Daniel Daniel Diario. Hi How are you. I'm good. I WanNa ask you this whole idea of the hostess award show. It feels like it's not going away anytime soon. If you were to grade the as on how they handled it. What kind of Marx would you give them. I would give the EMMYS a failing grade for how they handled filling in the gaps without got a host. I thought all of the interstitial bits all of the comedy all the attempts to explain to the audience what TV was fell totally flat. I will say one positive fringe benefit was that I noticed that fewer stars were being played off and the longer speeches were more impactful and more thoughtful every other aspect of the production. I thought didn't work and I missed the presence of a kind of guiding intelligence. Let's listen to the speeches that did get to run a little bit longer. This is Michelle Williams accepting her emmy for playing gwen Verdon and Fosse Verdon and so the next time a woman especially a woman of color because she stands to make fifty two cents on the dollar compared to her white. Male counterpart tells you what we need to order to do her job. Listen to her the. I think it's important to note Michelle. Williams has simone history with this. She went back for some re-shoots on the movie all the money in the world. She got paid a thousand thousanddollars. Mark Wahlberg got a million and a half so this is a personal issue for her but it feels like the really did discover something by not playing Michelle. How Williams off absolutely I think I mean I feel as though if you think back a couple of years when Nicole Kidman won for big little lies she ultimately we got to give a long speech about what she learned about domestic violence in the role but she was kind of fighting with the orchestra in a way that kind of sapped the dignity and meaning of the moment the fact that Williams was able to kind of speak in Kristalina way as composed she was carrying across these points that were personal to her relevant to the project relative to Hollywood. I thought it was really important on unfortunately with the viewership being what it was. I'm not sure how many people saw these great points but I I still think it was important. Let's talk about the viewership because it does appear that the ratings were an all time low for the Emmy Broadcast and it does. I feel like what was celebrated. Last night was not network television. I think Saturday night live with the only network show that picked up any emmy's in the primetime ceremony last tonight. Does it feel us if this is a network show that celebrating stuff that you would never see on any network. Yes it feels as though this is a network show that not only we celebrate stuff that doesn't air on network but stuff that never could I mean fleabag show. I greatly admired that was the night's big winner in comedy is so so far beyond I think what the great network watching still extant mill American audience is accustomed to that basically could come from another planet. I think what this means for. The EMMYS is an existential question going forward of what the show can do and where it should even be. Would this be better better served. If we put the Amazon Netflix would be better served. We put it on
Giants Name Daniel Jones the Starter, Sending Eli Manning to the Bench
"Re hitting the top story of the day Daniel Jones going to start this week for the New York giants against the Tampa Bay buccaneers Eli Manning officially benched looks like his career with China's over as the starting quarterback well again and we'll see what Daniel Jones happened. I mean he could get blown up and then he lies back in there. Yes that's true I I mean but we haven't heard from Pat Shurmur and we will tomorrow and and what we will hear as I'm sure he's the quarterback and we're moving forward with him and Eli will do his best to mentor him in any. I don't think Eli wants to be traded on like he wants to go anywhere. People are wondering if he is traded spot track tweeted out while unlikely if the giants do trade Eli Manning. He'll cost his new team six hundred seventy six thousand dollars as per week ten point one million dollars to the rest of the season. The giants have already paid him six point eight million the jets are going to get Sam darnold back before or the midseason point okay. The Jaguars are going to get nick foles back around the midseason point. Drew brees is coming back around the midseason point. The steelers are not getting big ben back but it makes sense for them to see who they have in Wehr young guy a guy that Ben didn't want to mentor cantor when he was drafted last year he was definitely rankled by the drafting of Mason Rudolph the of that. I don't believe there's any doubt and he didn't say a mentor him like Rudolph said it's not Ben's Job to mentor me and he used that on his radio show which has since since been shuttered that just to put it all out there that I'll just point to the book and just say you know that's yours since he doesn't want me to mentor him even thought it was funny and and it landed with a thud but they have to see what they have in Mason Rudolph and at Mason Rudolph. Let's say performs like Dak where it's amazing and he's terrific traffic and the team makes the playoffs and gets a playoff start then. We're going to have an interesting thing on her hands right here. Ben will come back and come back saying I am ready to show up and it'll be like far like when Aaron Rodgers got there like oh I don't plan will be ready to garage. Come back in shape. He'll probably say ten fifteen rounds and it'll be ready to go and put the steelers and a tough bind but that is a high class problem and the steelers are going to find out if that's a high class problem that they can have because at some point Ben will be done and Mason Rudolph. We'll be sitting there and for Mason Rudolph he'll be able to just basically say to them because they don't have a fifth year option on him because he wasn't a first round draft pick nick franchise tag me Pittsburgh or trade me and someone also pay me like Jimmy Garoppolo. This is a big opportunity for him and whose his first quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo so we lies not going anywhere no one's going to be wanting to hire Eli manning and the giants the best backup quarterback and perfect mentor for for Daniel Jones perfect. Why would they trade him? who had taken are just told every? I just gave you the possibilities. Nobody needs him but you're you're. You're not like it's not like there's a Minnesota Vikings situation where they had to pull the trigger for Sam Bradford because they had a super bowl ready team that went poof because teddy bridgewater blew his knee up but if you take away his name. Ui Manning and you look on paper you're trying to acquire a guy is three and nineteen eighteen again his last starts and seven years old and I'll say this again do we have shown O'Hara's tweet and obviously he's biased. He won a super bowl with Eli. Put it up Shara so incredibly disappointed and frustrated with the giants right now. Defense gives up sixty three points in two games wide receiver group is depleted but let's change your. QB question marks Kurt said the same thing he sees the film you lie is not making poor decisions. He's making the right decisions. The only decisions decisions he has in front of him and he's being held to account now you can say that it's been a long time coming but it's not the only answer and Daniel Daniel Jones and again credit gettleman. He's putting it out there right now he could have sat there and say I take the rest of the year because the ownership is ready for you. Take the rest of the year and then I'll get more. I'll get more top five picks for Daniel Jones but he didn't do it. What if Daniel Jones comes out as three hundred yards and beats the bucks this week while then we're we're not talking about any more we

"Can. But you don't have to you can ask the question who do we think gives us the best chance to win the next three or four years? And if you say, Nick foles, the nets the call you make Daniel from Hamilton's up on ninety four w I pay. Jodi, Jodi, what's going on what he say, Dan? What's going on, man? How are you? Good. I was calling about Nick foles. Everyone's giving them all this hate people. Don't want him. Sorry. No. No. No. No. No. No. Daniel Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, dos say, everybody because. No that would you just said everybody hates Nick foles. No. As a matter of fact, right now more people are in love with Nick Boles. If there has to be a decision today made as dude eagle quarterback is more people are gonna pick pulse and Wentz. So you're you're starting from an incorrect statement saying everybody hates Nick balls. Still go into war with Carson Wentz. And we'll defend Carson Wentz. They're going to minimize Whitney Wells' is done. That's their that's their right. But that's the minority right now, not the majority. I don't know I have to disagree with you. I was listening to it yesterday. I on here about how is the way better quarter. Carson Wentz is the way better quarterback. He has. Speech tonight speaks for all now. Oh. What? I speaks for all of Philadelphia now. Well, yeah, I have to agree with you. The Nick should be the starting quarterback there. Daniel even if it's us too that takes everybody out of the picture because there's two of us to be told this two million of us because yes, Nick foles is one over the town. There are some people and they're within their rights is the beta, but this isn't an easy stance debate either Nick Walter Chrysler went it's a good debatable topic there arguments on both sides, but just judging from listening to WIP people, I talk to what I get as far as social media response goes right now the pendulum has swung to Nick foles. The majority of people who have a strong opinion on this. Our big enough eagle fans to register a strong opinion. The majority are believing Knicks demand today. Knicks the man next week nixed. The man next month and Knicks the man next year, which is the most important thing. 'cause when you bring neck wells back he's as you're starting quarterback. He's not coming back as a backup. Up that that can happen either. He's the starter or he's elsewhere. And the majority of the people are there now Nikko's out and throws four picks and eagles get crushed again. Forty eight to seven we may get some of those people who aren't as strong in their opinion to swing back. The other way the pendulum can absolutely swing. But do me a favor. Call say Jodi, I don't understand these people who are still back in Carson Wentz. I'm like Carson too. But what Nick foles is done here is historic. How do you not give Nick foles the job? Teens rob gas station after clerk collapses
"What do you do with a couple of kids like this police in Washington state said Tuesday the identified two teenagers? Who robbed a convenience store after the clerk collapsed with a life threatening medical issue. Police say the teens walked into a shell station with an adult man on Saturday afternoon. One of the teams took a pepperoni pepperoni. Stick from the counter and started eating it. Then gave a second one do his friend with a man tried to purchase a different item. Felisa clerk tried to charge him for the two pepperoni sticks. As well. An argument broke out before one of the teenagers offered the clerk a dollar Bill. Incense the clerk came around the counter to confront the teens. After a brief conversation, the clerk term to return to the register only to stumble and collapse. The adult man left the store and one of the teenagers grabbed the dollar Bill out of the clerks hand. The teens initially left the store, but each of them return to steal merchandise an empty the stores cash. Register. The teens can be seen on surveillance video stepping over the clerk to exit the store. Police said another customer who entered the store after the boys left called nine one one. The end of that the clerk is still alive, but he's in critical condition. It's not clear whether any of the trio had been arrested or even charged with a crime robbery. They went back into the store cleaned out the cash register. Steal merchandise. What do you mean, the they don't know what they should arrest on? Are. You kidding me? I bet you these these teenagers are just the pride of their family. Question is what what do you do? What do you do with teenagers that behave like this? Do you charge them with a robbery? Charge them with simple theft. What are you charge them with? You know, the argument that the engaged with a clerk is what caused his medical condition. To reach a level where he collapsed. He was fine before the teenagers came into the store and get into a confrontation with the guy. So I think you could make the argument that they are responsible for his medical condition. So what do you do with these kids? Police are trying to figure out whether or if they'll be charged with a crime. I mean, it's pretty cut and dry when they're on surveillance videos rifling through the cash register.
