"In a it doesn't look brilliant for being dressed at the moment. She did have a break in that second set, but it was a bit limp in the end from her suffering from that shoulder injury. Shunta has got Leila Fernández in her opener. We've already seen is this right Matt, we've already seen the two longest matches of the year. And they both sort of been in the last 24 hours. Yes, yesterday we had some son of a coming from a set down, I think, to beat velocity. And that was the longest match of the year at the time, and then today we had sarana caste beating a bitch who said that Meyer in three hours, 30 minutes, and that is the new longest match of the year. Some sort of in our place zheng shin Wen, which is an interesting one, arena Saba lenka returns this week and we have a frivolous Linda. Going well, she's already beaten Daniel Collins in round one, so tough couple of weeks for Danielle Collins. Very interesting to see how arena sabalenka comes out, isn't it? Is there any kind of letdown? Has she sort of had sufficient time to process what she did? In Australia, remember that French Open the Wimbledon after Simona Halep's French Open win where she was just too happy. She was just kind of not there emotionally because she hadn't had the time to process it. You know, friendship and comes around far too quickly on the heels of the French Open. Did I say French Open twice there? Wimbledon French Open. You know what I mean, folks? There is a WTA event in Mexico this week in Merida as well two 50 event magdalena and saint

"And that's not trying to dis yevgeny. He got to world number one. Fantastic achievement. But I think there are quite a lot of pre big three and big four world number ones who weren't there very long. And who were not necessarily that comfortable in the role as well. I'll put them to him. But anyway, it's a good match to look forward to, I think, because it's an opportunity for pagola in a way that it didn't feel like one in the past. And yet, I mean, I've still chosen Sri Lanka to win the title, even though I'm not completely convinced about it. It's just knowing that top level is in there somewhere. And if it comes out, then New York gets to see it. And I suppose I'm just really excited by that prospect, having seen what it was like in the spring. The evening match that we had tonight between Daniel Collins and sabal and you mentioned it earlier. I mean, for a set and a half, it was an absolute joy. They were going toe to toe. It was just full of ferocious shop making Collins was giving it all the big come ons and in the face and sabalenka was standing up to it and it was just everything you want really. And then I just, I'm afraid I've got a little memory that I'm going to struggle to shake, I think, of sabal and asking for a medical timeout just before Collins was about to serve late on, I think, in the second set. And then she broke. And that those 2 may be completely separate things. Collins was very warm in her handshake to establish at the end of the match, but I wish players wouldn't do that. I just don't I just don't, I think it's poor form. I really do. Yeah, it's a really tricky one because I don't necessarily think there should be a rule introduced because it would be such a broad brush stroke. It would have to be such a broad brush brush strokes rule. You want someone to be able to receive treatment if the alternative is them not being able to continue with the match. If someone happened to roll their ankle really badly and needed it taping up at that point in the school line, you very much want them to be able to get their ankle taped up rather than someone have to retire from the match. But in that situation that we had today we have a linker that wasn't right. I'm not saying she wasn't injured, but she just had a little rub. I could have done with that at about 3 o'clock today. Can confirm? And yeah, it's funny. At the time, during the injury timeout, sabalenka didn't kick up a fuss about it at all. In fact, she was laughing at the tournament supervisor came on Collins. Tournament supervisor came over to torture and couldn't make up what they were saying, but she was laughing and joking and remarkably relaxed, but maybe that was sort of trickery to shake off how she was really feeling because it did seem to affect her and it didn't feel right. I noticed, as we come to you now, she hasn't given a press time yet. So we're not going to get the sort of immediate reactionary press conference, but I do wonder what those quotes will keep an eye on. For tomorrow's show. I wonder whether there could be a rule that you can only have one before your serve. Like if you were to say roll your ankle in the middle of a game and it was your opponent serving, you just give up a couple of points so that it's then your serve. That feels to me like it could be a compromise. It would maybe, well, it would stop that. Wouldn't have been able to have the time out at that point. It was a really good match up until that point. It was giving. It was ferocious hitting. And people have been people have been on at me about the Collins back hand and all I'm going to say is monitoring the situation closely. It's a good backhand. It really, really is keeping an eye on it. The Collins serve is not on any known list. 38% in today. She out double faulted sabalenka on a bad serving day. I mean, that's really why she's ended up losing this match. Isn't it? Yeah, low percentage first serve a lot of double faults. Yeah, really, really problematic, actually. But it's frustrating so much because that's a shot totally under your control. And it is weird because usually the whole game is built around a service. It's quite unusual to have that sort of isolated area of total laps in your game and everything else looking pretty secure and confident. Her baseline game looked right on it tonight. You know, it didn't seem to be affecting the rest of her game, which is very strange, but you don't win many matches with 38% first serves and you didn't does not matter who you are. And we have to mention the incredible arena sabalenka stat. Oh yeah, which they flash it up on ESPN after she'd lost the first set saying that she was 5 and O win loss record in slams this year after losing the first set. She's now 6 O. Caroline wozniacki said, I would just start losing sets deliberately. Yeah. I mean, has there ever been a more quintessential arena savant because that? It's amazing. And you know what? That's going to get in the head of an opponent at some point, isn't it? It's going to get out there, though. It also means all her Grand Slam losses this year. Obviously, she didn't play Wimbledon have been from a set up. Yes, that's right. She lost to another great just to connect me at the Australian open from a setup and Georgie at Roland Garros from a setup. Very good. I do like that. There was another match going on as we were departing flushing Meadows, saw a bit of it on the monitor between Karen in a place cover and Victoria razor Ingrid, it was just one of those matches that every game, every point seemed to be keenly contested. It was on the I think it was on the Louis Armstrong corridor, was it on the grandstand. I think maybe Louis Armstrong Armstrong air because unfortunately the grandstand caught goes out of play for singles quite early on. I mean, I love that call. Yeah. Shame. But when we were on our way out, we heard this almighty raw and we were trying to work out now is that for push give a winning it in straight sets or is that for Victoria Azarenka leveling? And it was the latter. I think he has a rank is very popular here. Yes. Yeah. And I mean, it was electric. That court, and I think because of The Rain as well and because it's got a roof on it, people came in there to get a bit of respite. It wasn't ticketed in the opposition. So the people are absolutely jammed in and created a most fantastic atmosphere and fair play to carry on in place cover who's had a couple of pretty dodgy years really. Apart from the Wimbledon final after since then, it's been not been great. And this is a really good win for it. As our encounters are still going.

"Even if it's very little, it doesn't matter because Daniel Collins again seems to be bringing the heat and I was instantly only thinking Jesse pigula was going to be going into week two of the U.S. open as America's greatest hope. But the fact Daniel Collins is here. I mean, where do you sit on Collins peculiar? Do you think who are you more who do you think is going to go further? I just don't even think that's a question. I think in terms of Collins's ability, I think it far exceeds the consistency of pagola. Collins has brought so much on her side. I'm going to hold you to that Chris for the rest of the tournament I'm going to, by the way. I should have learned this by now. Don't say anything too concrete. I now understand why Joel sort of played both sides of the fence slightly, but I'm not. I'm getting all in on D.C., Daniel. Yeah, I think I honestly just think she's such a great player. Her backhand is probably one of the best on the tour. And her attitude and big moments is fantastic. And the thing that I would say I'm so impressed by from this tournament is that she took out Osaka a big hitter who shed a three O record against. And then she's played some tricky opponents, cornes very challenging, and she hit through her, which is something that RADA Khan, who couldn't do, and you have to have total belief in your shots to do that. And she really did, some of the shop making was extraordinary, and then she played Saba lenko in the next round, who she's also zero in three against. And so it's setting itself up for the transfer Danielle to show that she can beat players that can use to out hit her, which I think is something you should take a lot of confidence in. But pagola got through, Danielle Collins, put on a real show. And let's look forward to round four. We have all of our matchups now across the men's and women's jewels. Let's start with the women's jaws as we're speaking about Danielle Collins and Jessie pegula. So we've got Iger schwinn tech, you'll knee mire in the top half along with kvitova versus, Azarenka, pisco ver and Danielle Collins arena sabalenka and then in the bottom half we have Zhang versus coco Goff Caroline Garcia versus Alison risk anjal versus coup metaverse and then Samsung versus I Tom yanovich. I mean, where are you, where are your eyes drawn? Or where are your ears? Where did your ears perk up as I went through those match ups? I'll tell you what I was looking at this door and thinking, it's so much stronger than the Wimbledon line up at this stage. Oh yeah. And so I think I'm pretty excited for a lot of these matches. I think Myers is the common thread there, obviously. She is the common thread. And I'm very pleased she is where she is because if she had had those quarter final points, she would have been so much higher up the rankings. So it makes it even more impressive, doesn't it? Oh yeah, and she took it in a positive way and obviously rubber kina is not necessarily feeling like the Wimbledon champion. And so nimai is going to prove that she's a quarterfinalist, hopefully. If she gets away against eager, but I think that could be an interesting match up, I think she's really striking the ball well. I think another good one will definitely be called in sabalenka. I hope that's the night session. I think I'm more excited about some of the quarterfinal potential match ups than the fourth round, but what about you Joel? Who's got your attention? Yeah, definitely Collins sabalenka. Yeah. In terms of yeah, I'm sort of hoping to pencil in glossier Goff quarterfinal. I think that if that does happen for me, that could go a long way in deciding who gets to the final from the bottom half, but there's still some very tricky matches there. Versus coup d'etat, I have had to meet her to go quite. I think I got cured metadata to get to the quarterfinals. Who knew was such a big fan? You know, I know, right? So yeah, and also Tommy novich, let's see if she can back up that winning in Serena Williams. We all know how hard it is to back up wins. Against legends in the game. So some of them might get it done, yeah. Yeah, I'm with you there, which is annoying because as I say, I love Tommy annoy bitch. I think she had such a great match, but yeah, can she can she keep it consistent for round four? We'll have to wait and see. Looking at the men's side, we've got Daniel Medvedev Nick curios, booster versus Karen catching off, davidovich for an mute and caspar rude to round up the matches in the top half for round four. And then in the bottom half we have Ilya ivashka Yannick sinner. Marin Cilic Carlos alcaraz cam nori Andre Rublev and in France's tiafoe Rafael Nadal, we haven't even spoken much about Rafael Nadal. So far, given he's been on the evening sessions and we've not been able to because it's been hitting himself with the racket. He's giving himself a nosebleed. He's had some nice he's had some nice matches and you have Richard Gasquet. I think he's now 18 and O. Against Richard Gasquet. Do you know, interesting fact for you, Chris, I was reading, Djokovic has the only other one sided head to head records that is also 18 and O is at gael. It is gal mon fees, very good. It wasn't a question, but I jumped the gun there. But yes, yeah, very, very easy in the end. Yes, the third set was a little bit tighter. But yeah, where again, where are you looking at here? Because yeah, Nadal tiafoe, chafe came through Schwartzman relatively comfortably. Do you think, do you think tafe might give Nadal a bit more of a run for his money? I don't think so because I think TFO it doesn't necessarily it's not the best closer. I think Nadal is going pretty easy to do this first week and I think it will be the nori match if they're both making where something could quite surprising, maybe we would get a surprising result there. But I mean, I can't let past the only chance that I have of getting one point in collector sat and that's Medvedev curios. Yeah, I've never wanted carriers to win so badly at a time when I'm probably not as big as supporter. Because I've got a point. I mean, I've got curios winning this. I think kiros has won all of their matches on the tour in best of three, but Medvedev beat curios at the Australian open, this season, their only match at a Grand Slam. So yeah, I'm not sure where this is one thing that's going to go, but I slightly slightly tilt the momentum at the moment towards Nick curios. I think Medvedev might get it, I think he looked really impressive in his last round. But I did predict Kerry as well, and so I'm doing what you have done previously Charlie. I'm saying both in a way.

"Coping mechanisms. They're the mechanisms to deal with what she is feeling. And yeah, that was a massive challenge for her today. She came out. Hitting her forehand pretty badly, really. To be fair, Daniel Collins also wasn't hitting through on the forehand either. It was kind of a battle of Barty slice against Daniel Collins beautiful topspin for back hand and to be honest, in terms of the ground stroke rallies, it was Collins that was getting the better things with that back end of hers and Barty wasn't getting much from this life and it was the Barty serve that kept her in it and the body served was such a difference maker today got her out of so many as she called them in press half chances. You know, half chances that we're snuffed out for Danielle Collins. She just she had that in her pocket and that must be just such a comfort to have what was Nadal's expression about having got a note was confidence Nadal had in his pocket, isn't it? Well, she had that too. Yeah. Serving one pocket, confidence in the other pocket. I felt like there were moments in each set which freed Barty up and in the first set. It was when she saved a break point at two all, and she did so with a brilliant forehand winner because as you said, Collins in the early stages, I thought was looking pretty good. She was sort of controlling the rallies. She was getting the sort of shots she wanted. She was starting to hit sort of really deep returns, like Yorkers down at barthes feet and sort of jamming her a bit. And Barty fended that off, saved a breakpoint with the forehand, and then sort of raced through the opening set really just so it freed her up. She studied him in that forehand a lot better. And then obviously we can talk about the Collins come back in the second set, but the other moment that sort of freed by was being 5 one down in that second set. And she said impressed she was just trying to do things to get some momentum, get some rhythm for the third. And as she did that, she gradually came back into the match and the last 5 or 6 games she played. I thought was pretty much Barty at her top level in terms of finding the forehand when she needed it. Just doing everything she could to get her feet and you know they were sort of highlighted by those red shoes she were wearing. She was wearing just to get her feet in position so she could hit her forehand because we talked so much about the party slice this tournament. It's been the talk of the tournament in many ways, but it wasn't, I didn't think the shot which won her this final. It was it was the forehand, really, which she got into play and then, as you said, the serve as well. Once she had mounted that comeback, there was one hole she found herself in 5 6, 1530 down, and she hit three unreturnable serves. And she was just able to rely on those key facets of her game when she needed them. And then she just played an absolutely dazzling tie break as well. So yeah, there was just these there was a lot of tension, but managed to stay cool and yeah, just loosen up when she needed to and find her best tennis, I felt. My God was there a lot of attention though. I mean that that rod laver arena they increased the capacity today to 85%. It felt full. I mean, I could spot the odd seat here and there, but it absolutely felt full. It was utterly deafening. I mean, it was deafening by the point that Matt and I walked in and the national anthem was being sung, Matt and I were on our feet for advance Australia fair. I think we joined hoisted to our feet if we weren't. No, but I sort of do know a lot of the lyrics because I've just heard it. Lots of Australian opens. Yeah. The feeling I got was the same feeling I had when sitting in the commentary box for Andy Murray against Novak Djokovic in 2013 at Wimbledon. Everybody's been waiting for this moment. And he couldn't be playing better. She couldn't have been playing better. It was all set up. And yet, even though it was straight sets like that was, it always felt precarious. It always felt as though this could turn. And frankly, it did turn dramatically 5 one is a heck of a deficit, and also that deficit was accompanied by Collins, just unleashing danimal as she calls herself for everybody to see and showing that she's not afraid. And I think that it's then that must have been a really big challenge for Barty to not panic to maintain her composure, but also ramp up her own competitiveness. And I think what we saw on match point when she finally won it, it was almost a little bit pointed. I mean, it was a release, but it was almost like she just embodied Collins for a minute and let rip her own come on and showed Australia and showed the world that yes, while she is the most likeable champion imaginable and everybody thinks of her as the woman next door and wants to be her friend, she is such a competitor and she is not letting go either. And it's in there. And then she just unleashed. And I love that about her because I think people can underestimate just as they used to with Federer. These people are desperate to win and they will they will hold on in the tug of war and until they can't hold on anymore. Yeah, nice doesn't equal no fangs, does it? No. She's decent. She's likeable, but she's got absolutely got fangs totally. Yeah. I don't think you win ground slams without fans. We'll check with Mary. On that theory, does Marin Cilic disprove that theory don't know anyway. We'll check. Well, you can lose fangs, right? Maybe you can obtain them temporarily. If you've got coronavirus, you should eat too much. I don't know what's a hard food. Help me out here some one. I don't know. Rock? Nuts. Eat too much of that, you're fine with me. It's been anyway. That was a misadventure. How about that winning moment? And the winning feeling inside the rod laver arena. One of the beautiful things about tonight was that there was just absolutely no no edge to the atmosphere. It was as wild an intense as you can imagine. It actually exceeded my expectations in that regard. I wasn't quite prepared for how intense that atmosphere was going to be tense and intense. And yet there was just no edge to it whatsoever it was just pure joy and goodwill. There wasn't a so to be heard and that was nice. Goodness for that, yeah. And I don't look I haven't lived in Melbourne for the last two years. I haven't been here, so I don't want to pretend to understand what this city has been through. And equally, I don't want to claim that this city has been through a completely different COVID experience beyond anyone else. You know, everyone's had their own COVID experience and everyone is everyone is awful and different in various different ways. But this city has been through it and I have sensed over the past two and a half weeks that there is a collective post traumatic feeling about this city. One of great happiness as well that it is not over, but there's a feeling in a hope that certainly the worst of it is over in terms of all the months the city has spent in lockdown more than any other the world over and stricter lockdowns than in a lot of places extremely strict lockdowns. I do feel that that is a whole part of this victory in this moment, this collective release and relief in this city in this country and for that reason it feels perfectly timed to me. Yeah, and Barty being, as I said, such a non divisive figure. Everyone can get behind dashboard..

"Well, thank you very much. Rose from Kingston Ontario that you heard in our intro, there rose is a friend of the pod from Canada, obviously, and just to clear something up very quickly, various different Canadian listeners have been in touch to let me know that mittens are a thing in Canadian sport and among Canadian sports fans. So I've learned something. I told you the Canadians mobilize with their emailing and apparently apparently stems from the Vancouver Winter Olympics a few years ago. Which were a very good Winter Olympics. I have to say, but we shall be dwelling on that folks because we need to talk about Ashbaugh the Australian open champion. She won through today in two sets over Danielle Collins two hard fought set she is a deserving champion as deserving a champion as they could ever be, I think she is a celebrated champion, a popular champion. I mean, I don't think popular even comes close to it. Matt and I were in the stadium in rod laver arena tonight watching ush party grit out that title and watching her receive the Daphne at cursed memorial trophy from evangel gong, which was a surprise to everyone goodness me. They kept that secret well. I genuinely think it was a total surprise to almost everybody in that stadium and it was a very well delivered moment of theater and theater theater is exactly the word I feel for what we've all been lucky enough to see tonight, but I think Matt and I feel particularly privileged that we were able to be there and PS. It's because of Friends, the tennis podcast that we were able to be there. So thank you very much. The whole night. Down to the fact that for the first time, this Fortnite, they didn't announcement saying, please put your phones on silent and make sure that they don't make any noise. I haven't heard that before this fortnight. They've been making various admin announcements about masks, et cetera. But this really felt theatrical from the word go and don't labor the analogy, but Ashbaugh definitely read the script, I think. And to be fair, Danielle Collins read the script as well because she made it a match she made it an occasion. She made it not feel like any kind of anti climax tonight. Totally, yeah, absolutely. It was a really good match. I think it looked for a long time like it was going to go three sets, of course, but in the end it was too very competitive set. Certainly the second set, it was very special being on the rod laver arena, as you said there were points of difference tonight compared to other nights. That's always going to be the case with a final. It feels different. There is a sort of tension in the air from the start, so much on the line, just the fact that the trophy is was right there at the net when they were shaking hands and having the photo taken just I don't know, it's just also intimidating, I feel and yet sort of both players really really handled it. I thought and yeah, the media seats were rammed. We've often sort of had the run of the place to be honest, but they were packed today. And yeah, I thought the atmosphere was pretty spine tingling actually really went through you when there were big eruptions whenever I sparked one points and whenever it got close and yeah, I think you said at the start of joy, there's so much joy around ash Barty. Everyone likes everyone roots for her. There's not a bad thing to say about ash bharti and I think she unites everyone and in that stadium. There's just such a warm feeling towards her tonight. It was special to be there. Yeah. I had the privilege of commentating on quite a few of these finals. And even in the role that you occupy whilst commentating, you're aware that it matters more than it feels different that every point is being hung on by everyone there and I find myself quite edgy. Myself feeling quite edgy even just watching TV and Hannah on our Twitter was really summing that up and from a party perspective as somebody who has everybody rooting for you and if she would dare think about that for a few minutes and feel like those people at home were feeling all those people that were rooting for in the stadium, she would not be able to play the sport, frankly, and so she had a real job to do on herself in that regard. I think she's done a brilliant job really of preparing itself for this moment. And I actually felt overall the occasion ended up being just about perfect because we got to see a close start. We got to see the moment Barty put the foot down and showed what she got. Then we got to see the Daniel Collins the real Daniel Collins and so did everybody in that stadium as she just decided to take them all on. And let everybody have it. Let everybody have the full Daniel Collins come on, let's go in your face experience whilst slamming backhands down the throat of ash bharti. That was her stunning to play her very best tennis for a purple patch there that got her out to that 5 one lead. And then we saw the flick of the switch of the bharti game. I compared it to Roger Federer last night, and I stand by that comparison. She has some think she has magic in her fingertips and she showed. She showed why she is separated in that regard from everybody else. And therefore we ended up with that scene at the end of a play winning the Australian open first time I've said it in my lifetime and it's a massive deal. It really felt huge. Because she didn't play her best tennis tonight, did she and I'm you know I'm not used to rush party, not looking sort of anything, but impervious to anything. You know, that's what she's, she's looked all tournament, you know? It's been sort of implausibly smooth almost. So I really enjoyed watching her challenged not just by Danielle Collins, but by the occasion and by the nerves which occasion she's got these real coping mechanisms with everything that she deals with her level of self control and all the rest of it is extraordinary, but she's not a robot. They're coping mechanisms. They're the mechanisms to deal with what she is feeling. And yeah, that was a massive challenge for her today..

"That is that ball that ball variety because I think they were just too many it was just too many shots I think from her that just sat up middle of the court there to be hit and that's and you don't want to do that with Danielle Collins across the net from you. Exactly. And I think Collins, you know, I didn't quite realize this, but since she came back after that surgery last year, she has been really on it, her first two titles, which again, I would have, I think, when we saw her do that at the time, I was surprised that she hadn't already won a title. But she's got 36 ten record since coming back, which is very impressive. And now into the top ten. So I think, you know, it's just getting a bit like rapha, you know, coming back after an injury lay off, not really sure how it's gonna go. You know, I think Collins is just so grateful as well to kind of be at this stage after all her health woes. And I guess it shows what she could have done years ago if she hadn't have been hindered by her endometriosis, which must have been obviously such a big impact on her life. And I've just really pleased that she's kind of got through that side and she's now in this position. It's just you can't help, but be happy for her. You know, even if you're not particularly a fan of hers or yell it or her yelling or you know find her a bit aggressive or whatever, I just think it's such a nice story. You know Kim, you know that yell is coming out in the final against ash Barty in front of you. Yeah. I mean, let's just look, let's just kind of preview the final because ash Barty, Daniel Collins, Ashbaugh leads the head to head three one. Barty won their previous meeting in Australia in 2020 at Adelaide in a final set tiebreak. I mean, Kim, where are you on this? So is Barty just going to steamroll it? I mean, this is her third American in a row, pegula keys Collins. Arguably Collins plays a similar game to keys, but perhaps her execution is at a higher level than keys that could challenge Barty. And the other thing as well is the pressure of the situation going to get to party because and Andy Murray at Wimbledon. She's aiming to become the first home champion down under since 1978. So I feel like there's quite a few factors at play, isn't there? Definitely. I think Collins generally speaking doesn't seem to have the same usually the same sort of fear, stepping onto a court. She doesn't care what she certainly doesn't show it, yeah. And I think that is what she's what you're going to have to need a facing overwhelming home favor on her home court going for him. She's going to love it though. I think she's going to revel in that though, isn't she? I hope so, 'cause I want to say a competitive match. I don't want to say a job in 6 one 6 two by Barty like you know we want a good match and also I mean even if you're an Aussie fan, maybe you'd want a good match or not just to have it be over in an hour. They've also got an Australian doubles final following afterwards. So a lot of people will be well buoyed up for that as well. But I think I can't look beyond Barty winning, of course. I think they would have to take a real. Collapse mentally from her at the thought of what she would be about to achieve. You know, in front of her home fans. And it would have to take a supreme performance from Collins. And I both of those likely to happen to such an extent they would turn it from being Barty straight set to Collins winning. I don't think so. I think you just have to go with the kind of record going through this tournament. But what he's only been on court for about 6 hours, which is just ridiculous. Her legs are so fresh. So fresh. Yeah, I know what you mean and I think with ash bharti, she will go in as obviously the overwhelming favorite and it will almost feel like a shock if she loses a set given that I think the dominance that she has had. Yeah, but again, if you are to ask me who do I think is going to win? Who do I want to win? I still want Daniel Collins to win. I just think she's great for the tour and to add another name into the phrase at a Grand Slam champion. I think is great. I also wonder, be interesting. If Daniel Collins did win and she became one of these new Grand Slam title winners. Maybe that also will take a little bit of the focus that will obviously still be massive focus on emerging, but adding another single Grand Slam winner into the pot, perhaps takes a little bit of the focus off. So yeah, anyway, I would love to see Daniel Collins win, but at the same time, if I'm going with my head, it's got to be ash bharti. Yeah. Straight sets. It's just been relentless and I'm just a little bit, I guess it worried that Collins is just going to play it like Madison keys and she might execute a bit better.

"She can use it offensively to maneuver opponents around the court is such it is such a good shot. It's sort of such quiet total mastery of the game of tennis that Barty seems to have developed at the moment. And the way she's serving and rolling through games on her serve as well, just sets her up for the rest of the game to flourish. Well, in the final, she will be playing somebody who has beaten her before in Australia. Who knows how significant that will be, but I'm sure it'll be in the mind of Daniel Corden when she takes to the court on Saturday Collins today, be eager on tech 6 four, 6 one. It was just in the zone stuff from Danielle Collins that sort of purple patch match that we all dream of having one day. Every time you unzip your bag, you think, today could be the day. It's never the day. But for Daniel Collins today, it was one of those days she was just brilliant she if possible up her level of aggression and intensity. Certainly aggression there was some stats coming up, I think, certainly on the coverage out here showing that she had added about 5 mph to her average backhand speed. She was just absolutely drilling her shots with just confidence in commitment to the extent that ego Schwann tech said after the match that that was the hardest ball she'd ever faced. In a match, she said, look, there are players that hit the ball harder than that in practice, but they usually take a lot off the ball in a match, you know, to reign in the margin for error. So, you know, I think if Collins is a big hitter, I don't think of her as one of the biggest strikes out there, but I wonder if she was just so confident. I'm feeling it so much that she was hitting the ball as big as she possibly could and just trusting that it would go in and not worrying about margin for error. Especially that backhand because she's so confident with it. That is her shot and Darren Cahill, who is there, I think, doing ESPN court side coverage. He made a little cameo pop up on eurosport, and he said, look, after the first set, he said, the first thing shown tech's got to do is stop feeding that backhand. She's got to start going to the forehand more. And next thing, you know, just as in the first set, it was three love in a blink of an eye. And the stats were coming up, and she was going way too much to the full hand to the backhand rather and just feed in that shot. And Collins was sitting on it and when she strikes the thing and often she'll go across court too, she'll give herself a maximum margin for error, hit it as hard as she possibly can. And it is like a catapult coming out of the racket and you know, you're on the defensive and actually that shot to the body, slice back and most likely will be a fascinating visual, I think, and to see where that ends up. Ego shrunk serve, I think was shown up tonight. Look, we know it's not necessarily the strongest part of her game and perhaps never will be a big weapon, but it was attacked viciously tonight, you know she was frantic was just looking stranded after the service delivery and the fact that Daniel Collins was serving sir will herself. It just, you know, as schwantz said, impressed, she just didn't really stand a chance. Given all that. But I got the impression from what she said impressed. She really knows she needs to try and beef up that so she was talking a lot about the fact that she feels there are a lot of areas she can improve with her in her game, and she's glad about that. She said, look, if there were no areas that I could improve, then that would be pretty bad news because I'd be losing like I did tonight. But it's going to be interesting. What she can do with that shot because I don't have the technical knowledge to know whether she needs to change the motion at all to get more out of it or whether it just needs time and attention. I don't know that, but I do think it needs beefing up for hardcourts. And I certainly think she is ambitious about having success on surfaces beyond clay. I also think she was not a step slow tonight, but just perhaps didn't have the energy to even try and match Collins for intensity. You know, I know probably not anybody can actually match her for intensity. But that's quite an intimidating and fearsome thing, I think, to have across the court from you and she won't take looked not up for the fight, really, not that she wasn't fighting for it out there, she was, but, you know, I'm not sure she was bare knuckle fighting the way that Danielle Collins wanted to. They're different characters, aren't they? But I mean, I think the interesting thing with Collins is I only really she had a really dug into the massively vocal come on and let's go when she started to feel.

"She's another player that I don't know if she thought that she would get back into this situation because she's had some surgeries in the last couple of years. She's had her long-term battle with endometriosis. And I think she probably questioned whether she would be playing this well again, making it through to the latter stages. But here she is. And it's a fantastic story. She's also now into the top 20 for the very first time in her career. So I'm really pleased for her. I really admire always her grit and determination. She's always quite an entertaining person to watch on the call, even if her opponents perhaps don't appreciate her, yelling all the time, but I think it's always good to see her getting fired up and corneille I think was just a bit too hot and tired to really try and fight back after losing that kind of tighter first set today. Yeah, Danielle Collins is a real character, isn't she? She's very intense on the court and I think that intensity is one of the reasons that she I think does so well, grand slams, I feel like she always quite the opposite I think to Madison keys who I think perhaps is a bit too reliant maybe on a plan a game. I actually think Collins is one of those players who fight her fight to win means that she's going to lead. She's going to leave no stern no stone unturned. She's going to kind of look at any sort of roots she can. To win it to winning a match. She just wants to get it done. And yeah, I think coming through cournet again, another great story for cornet first first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. It's just kind of I think ran out steam against Daniel Collins who will make her debut into the top 20 next week. I mean, it's been a great, it's been a great tournament, hasn't it Kim for Americans in the ladies in the ladies draw two semifinalists, Jessica bielle, as well get into the quarterfinals, Amanda Anderson over as well with that amazing win over Naomi Osaka. But yeah, Danielle Collins really kind of leading the way you feel. In terms of, I think, just showing, just showing how to get it done and just kind of move on to the move on to the next round and. You get your tech next who had a bit more of a tussle against kaia kanepi. I think actually it was her longest match in a Grand Slam one minute over the three hour mark. So there's going to be potential questions there, even though Xi on tech may go into the favorite as that is going to be questions there of how of how much does she on tech have left in the tank and against a fit and firing Daniel Collins? That might be that might be closer than perhaps some people are expecting. I mean, Collins has had a few three setters, I think against Clara torson and Elise mertens. But yeah, there's only one day between matches. They're playing literally straight away the next day. But she won't take his sport 21, so you'd think that she should physically be able to recover, but it will be interesting because when she won Ron Gareth 2020, she breathes through that draw, you know, barely dropping games. So if she can potentially win the title here, she's going to have to have done it in a bit of a grittier fashion a couple of three setters and just not having that kind of ease of sort of through the draw. And I think that's what she said that she's been really working on finding solutions on the court when she's in adverse positions and she spoke about she was a setting a breakdown against Canopy. Exactly. And you know, she spoke about working with the sports psychologist when she won ruling garrison obviously she's still working with her to really focus on how to deal with adversity in these matches because she didn't have much adversity when she won her first Grand Slam. So I think that's testament to you, I guess the work that she's been doing. She was able to turn it around today against a very seasoned opponent who could well have that second set was a tie break. It could very well have gone can epi way give or take a few points and most certainly that would have been a very unexpected 70 finalist. And I'm going to admit, I did not watch a lot of this match, but I did see match point over and over because it was an incredible show of defense for English. I actually listened as I recommend if there's one shot one point you want to watch today, it is the match point in the film tech can match and yeah, the defense I think that should be on tech showed was for me was a sign of a player who could I don't think necessarily is a fore conclusion this is going to be ash party title. Because I do think that the defense that should be on tech shows I think is a good foundation, a good platform for her to potentially mount her own challenge. To win her, her second Grand Slam title. It's obviously not necessarily going to be easy and she's got to come through Danielle Collins first, but I think she will have tremendous belief given those adverse positions. She's found herself in grand slams in gansa matches and has come back from. She is now 5 O in three set matches where she's lost the first set on the Grand Slam stage. So I think she's going to have tremendous confidence regardless of what I think Danielle Collins is starring at her if she's a break up. If she's a setup or if she's a sat in a breakup, I don't know, but I think regardless of that she don't take is going to have that confidence that, yeah, she's going to be able to find a find a way to win. But you just know that Daniel Collins is one of those players, he's not going to she's probably not going to let it go that easily. Yeah, I mean, I have to say both of these semifinals, there may not be what we've predicted as is often the case with the ladies, but they are very entertaining matches that I'm going to enjoy watching them even though I do believe that bharti will win fairly comfortably and I think we'll come through in a tougher match..

"So I think he can be pretty proud of what he's achieved, Howard Daniel, but yeah, Yannick, you know, expected to win that one before it happened. Because just because it's an excellent. Yes. Exactly. And finally, we had very very good win, I think. Taylor Fritz, another American who is doing very well down under. He defeated Roberto Bautista gut in 5 sets. He's through to the forefront of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. He, again, it's playing some very, very good tennis. I didn't realize this Lee. He had lost all 7 of his third round matches at grand slams before this. So he obviously was very excited, I think by breaking breaking that duck against a very widely opponent in, I think, in RBA, coming through 6 three in the 5th set. You know, he was talking about the fact that he has waited so long for this moment. It was obviously, I think plague on his mind. And yeah, really nice to see, I think, for a player like Fritz, because on his day, he's can be a handful, very quality player. And I think he deserves to be in the I see him as a player who certainly can be a forefront quarter finalist player at a Grand Slam. And I think on the hard courts in Melbourne, he feels he feels right at home. Yeah, I mean, you know, he'd already got a good head to head record against RBA. But I think, you know, he obviously he's had a good match against TFO in the second round. Where he winning straight sets. So he went into it with a lot of confidence. He went out and bagged him in the first set. You know, I think he can say that he's having a good Australian open. He will play city pass next. Which I think will be a good test of where his level is to play a top 5 player. Not that he hasn't he hasn't played those before, but I think that will be that I'll do a really good if he can take a set or two off 60 pass. I think you'll be quite happy with that. Who knows, maybe you can go on one more than that. You know what, I would not be surprised if Taylor Fritz potentially upset stefanos. I do think there's there are opportunities. I don't think it's a bank official to pass to win that one. There are other round matches where I've been more confident in calling the winner. I mean, met with F cressey for but there are others in there where it's going to be less close. I think it's pass could be a really good match to watch. That would be tomorrow. Yes, definitely. And, you know, let's move on to the talking about the women because it was really a day of comebacks from a set down on the women's side. Sabalenka, Daniel Collins and Elise corneille, all one from a set down. Sabalenka's just making a habit of this at the moment in Australia. I think she's, I think this is her third match in a row that she's won from a set down which again, I think shows how much fight and determination she has. She beat von der rusev four 6 6 three 6 one. Yeah, very, very good. She's, again, I think slowly rediscovering her serve. I think she I say this quite like I say this offhand, but only ten double falsely only ten, but yeah, I think she's employed for the pieces, I think, to help her, I think she credits him helping rectify the kind of serving situation. And I think just recognizing it, yeah, in the first place means that you're right. You can get onto the thinking. How do I solve this in order to potentially go on and win a Grand Slam? Even get to the final. I mean, she joked about it, didn't she in a post match interview that she only had ten double faults. I think if she can solve that problem and I'm not saying this is going to happen overnight that she's now not going to double at all between now and the end of the tournament because clearly she will. But I think if she can solve that problem, that is going to do her really well because the rest of the game is there, isn't it? Yeah. Which makes it more. It just makes it even more complex. It's like one, it's one shot, but obviously it's like the most crucial shot. But every point, you can start every point with it. She's got the focus hasn't shared. You can tell that in a facial expression. She's very serious looking person when she plays. So she's got the focus. She's got she can clearly adapt to play to what her opponent is doing. She shows that in the sort of the three step comebacks that she's had. I mean, she did that in the first round against storm Sanders. She did that in the second round against one. So she's the three matches in a row where she's done that this week. She's clearly got the mentality to get her out the obstacles that her opponents put in front of her. So I think if she can just sort that first serving issue out she can she can go far, but I'm not saying I'm not sure whether that's going to happen at the Australian open. I think that will come hopefully with this side then that will hopefully come this year. Just on that, do you think sabalenka can win the Australian open without her serve firing a 100% or do you think actually going to be very, very difficult? Because at the moment, I'm just kind of looking at her performances. And as I said, that grit and determination seems to be. It seems to be the difference at the moment. And I wonder if you can just keep that battling mentality going, perhaps she doesn't need her serve to be firing on all cylinders because she's just finding a way to finding a way to get it done. Yeah, I mean, if she's not, you know, she's double folding a lot, and she's not necessarily winning service games, but she's winning matches. She must be doing something right when she's on the return. Is that enough.

"Fairer and on day one for France against a band who was ranked outside the top 300 should have been a shoe in. I felt like they did that today, and I think really, you shouldn't do that when it comes to this format. You've got to play your strongest pairs, get the win, and then if you want to muck about muck about in the doubles, but because over turned up, she hit big, I feel like they were really Slovakian team and really spurred on by the fact they were playing against someone so big as the U.S. they had a point to prove after losing the night before 5 hours on court for me to vote. I know. Yeah, I mean, it was an absolutely punishing schedule, I think, for Slovakia. And it did feel like the cards were stacked against them in some respect. And I think that showed in the schmid lever Collins match, because Daniel Collins completely fresh, this was USA's first tie night session. I mean, this was their first match. Canada were already out of it before USA even played their first match, but you could just help with Schmidt. She was just running on empty wasn't she. I mean, she didn't even sit down, I think a change events. You know, during one of the changeovers, she just looked like she had played a lot of tennis already and Daniel Collins looked very fresh and you know, she was, you know, she was in typical sort of Danielle Collins fashion. She was straight down to business from the first point. Yes, she was under a bit of pressure. The fact that USA will one kneel down, but it didn't feel like there was any any going to be any surprise I wish made the for coming through because Collins just paid a game and I saw that she needed to do really because, yeah, she is Schmidt, but just ran out of energy, I think. You could tell from some of the movements that she was doing that her legs she didn't have.

"Seats titans in here so even with that. I mean consummate could have to play teichmann in the second round than you would get potentially advantec teichmann third round winner to play bench. Gula in sixteen winner to play potentially astra body in the quarter is like. That's where i think that like once a second week kicks off. I think that bharti's draw ratchet ratchets up a lot in terms of Level difficulty but we also know that. It's almost a good thing freshman. I think that sometimes it's those trap matches you know of even like second round. I mean i think that too. Many tools to be bothered by tossing for example who is great but it's still not as multidimensional players ash but to play players that she doesn't play a lot and she doesn't know a ton about and that's where the uncertainty can undo her game a little bit but then entrance loves. The and bench loves that but she will not playing bench. Which i gotta level of. She will know playing fantastic which they played in madrid. I gotta level up show. Honestly she'll know and that's when things get and then obviously because we yeah in cincinnati. We saw that played a little scratch and then goes in like dominates aranka dominates critique of a dominates kerber and then beats teichmann wimbledon similarly so river teichmann. We didn't do isn't what do you make. Jill teichmann's run at cincinnati. Like one of those that dropped out who were like. Why did she get a wildcard. Was the main conversation octagon answer. Obviously there manager company. it's also owner of cincinnati of hers. talk. I don't know if she felt like obligated to prove that well something but like holy cow that was like on the come up a little bit and it had good results but that was next level. Lake making final thousand. Like wow like she was just so solid and both like in her game you have bettas beer insider moment. Wish people know about about who hadn't seen her before this month. Yeah now obviously. I mean legality. You said she is having results in an when you watch. If you've ever had an opportunity to watch joel teichmann play. When she is locked in it so good she is so good. She's incredible athlete. Great speed has every shot in the book. All court player likes the front court can play kind of clay style. She was born in spain. Opposition to swiss parents By she's coached by rancho sonya. A ranch antonia. She a fluent in spanish like she is. There's very spanish vibe about her. But and so sometimes i think that it even for for those of us. I think who watch her a lot. There is this tendency and plus plus because her first two titles came on clay. This idea of like oh. She's a clay court specialist but then once the pandemic hit and then restarted last summer. She's been a hard court quyen. I loved the story about how she was defending champion palermo and went to go play. I think it's multiple knows plymouth somewhere else. Yeah palermo but it was going to be the poster coming off the same week as lexington and says something about how she wouldn't get more points if she played plaermo again so you went to play lexington instead and made the final. Yep there that was. That was a really cool story. A loved backing yourself. A west coast conquer new. She's an interesting she's an interesting player. I'm still. I'm still getting to know her like lake. Just as a as a person as a player. I find her incredibly interesting. I think that the way her brain works is a little bit different. I don't that sounds weird to say. But like i just. I asked her questions. I don't really feel like. I'm getting answers that i expect you know. And she made a comment and cincinnati. Where kind of offhandedly that her coaches always tell her like. You're weird like they're like they are. My coach is always telling me. I think different. Or you do things weirdly or you see things in a different way or something. And i'm like that's really fascinating. I want to get to the bottom of this little bit. Because how do you have this kind of like left brain nece difference but then locked into a spanish style. Very fundamentally sound. You know it's to yeah it's a really and also be really really good athletes. She's very good with her court coverage he's like roger and rafa had a baby is it. You'll take me. I'm sure that fans has been interest but no just to finish up type in so she she comes out of the pandemic she makes that final in. Lexington starts this year incredibly well. has a great run semifinals in adelaide and then semifinals in dubai so she made a semifinal of a one thousand before should be competitive She beat I can't remember who else but she to two or three top twenty players martin's maybe in that run But anyways and then loses to critique of in dubai and then basically had a litany of injuries after that so it so when people say like it did come out of nowhere yes it came out of nowhere because her recent results through the clay the grass were absolute crap I think that she would like maybe one three matches over the last like maybe four months before cincy But she said that lake. She played montreal first. Round against daniel collins daniel collins coming off of san jose and she played three sets and she played she's she's like my level analyst beano free she's like the first one was wasn't paying. I didn't feel any pain. So she came in cincinnati and just played with and got real amp to play naomi night's session and they didn't handle her. She lost her composure. At moments in that match. Naomi she didn't believe bad match like teichmann was on it and every time naomi kind of pushed and pushed to try and get breaks back or break and get the lead teichmann to slam. The door was serving incredibly. Well that's the other thing too. She's got served like she's got future a lefty so she's got these naomi i think like an not just naomi i think caroline as well should be positive on the siamese and should be in the quarters. Belinda the left penis. I was really does not allow coffees. Yeah and i think with carver. Everybody looks at kerber. Inca the top. These but cleveland players have played them so many times. But like. here's a lefty. That's coming out of nowhere doing a combination of things that you're not used to seeing so it was wrenching so i was super excited for that final against ash because i was like oh ashes never played you one of the funniest moments since he's gone deep on jail here but I asked barney in the semi final after the semifinal win arizona. How would you know about jill. Like what do you know about teichmann and parties. I yeah no. I don't know much about her. Then spent the next forty five seconds completely breaking down her game of just like i mean. I know that lake. She's been injured for a while and like she's so starting pitching great results the start of the year. I'm like ash party. i don't watch. I don't watch women tennis liar like no you like. She's totally on it. And the pro. That's also part of it. She's a pro but she knew to stay wants uses the transition not more technologically. But in the next game. I loved teichmann sort of standing impressed when they talk about. Plus cavs sir yes. There's this lovely quote like well. She's the queen. She wears the show. This as green serves okay. But she's the eighth grade it was it was really like differential and like and and josh but also like good. It was like it was amazing in that answer because it was wash from an australia because she was saying that she tries to serve. She tries when she serves. She's like just like plus cover and then it came from ozzy journalists asking her. We'll but ash bardy leads the tour and aces like do you think that like you know ash. Parties serve is actually the one that you should emulate type type in first of all crack the joke. She's very funny. She carthago will but she has the shirt that says as queen. I mean like but then she also had this rationale like. But it's just like it's what you know player of. She's like when. I say when you say and a doll you think forehand roughest.

The the human mind will resort to those types of things. If you are repressing any side of yourself. As in that's the thing i've had to d program myself in unlearn everything that i've ever learned about life about relationships with people you know like i said with faith with masculinity with Drug addiction and all the underlying issues. And i've done it without therapy. I've gone through trial and error bumping my hand against one million times and i still have issues with it. You know what i mean. I inner demons all the time. And i'm thankful that i've got some people that are helping out with it but this is the other thing you get out of prison. They don't offer this kind of access in prison in if they do. The label of being a psychological are being a site inmate in prison is not good you get thrown into camps so you could be like somebody who may be suffering from a high functioning person suffering depression or something. Yeah you need some but you will get thrown in the same box with the saint with the people that are way far. Going in the you know the level. It's a one size cookie cutter approach to mental health in prison. And that's that was my question like if you ask for mental health care. Is it available but so you. You're going to the psych where we're people were. I'm guessing suffering from severe. Mental illness like schizophrenia. Or something are also going And in the security levels are higher on the lack of care. It's just a lot more. Everything about it is because empathy. There's no equity in that. Approach is what keeps and this is the other thing too like. My biological mother passed away. When i was in prison and i lived three streets down for my entire life. I never met her. But i called her for the first time in my life right went prison. That was on the encouragement of my wife. She's like you need to get some closure. This is what's been killing you for years to face it so like i called her. We found her number on google through the The white pages on on google and we call her income to find out. She lived with three three streets apple minds. So that's so. I knew that's when you found that out. Yeah well. I kind of figured it out a little bit before then but connecting the dots that i wasn't like when i was young. I don't remember how old i was i was. We had just moved into the to the neighborhood. My parents about their first house. I was playing basketball out in front of the house and two girls come riding by on a bicycle one grow points the other girl and says they know that your sister rebecca and they keep riding up and i'm young so i'm not really able to processes in the school and the girl comes up to me. She says daniel. You don't know me. But my name. Rebecca on your sister so that's a run run as far away from it but i don't discuss this with my parents house but now i started to get curious. I started looking for things. So that's when. I got the birth certificate when i took it to my literally coach. The name on it said i had a mother's name that didn't match up with my mother and then i had a sister named rebecca so later years later i ended up talking about it and he always just assumed that i knew you know and we never it was never communicated in our house. I don't you know he just. He thought that. I knew like just almost like it was a given in it. Wasn't you know he didn't have time to sit. You down and have never sent me down and have that conversation. We just just businesses normal. But i became very. I started that Out against my parents my mom one time. She told me she tried to punish me disciplining for something. I said you can't punish me. You're not my real mum ballots. Really the breakdown you know. that's a rebellion. That of course. Yeah a young child. Teenager would feel you know so these are some of the issues that had so when i found out that my birth mom died when i was in prison my wife told me and i have a cousin that was in contact with my wife which i'm hoping to meet soon and Hopefully i can beat my sisters as well too but when she passed away. My wife told me this situation if it bothers me which he did. I can't go to mental health. will you can. But the whole process of out mental health imprisoned takes about a month. They got two weeks to respond to you by the time they respond to you in two weeks politics about another two weeks to get you on the list to see a mental health doctor for it you have to apply. There's only.

"Possible to have played really really well and was on the call for a long time and competed really holds. Am i think gathered a little confidence in her body from last night. I think she got sort of a tournaments worth of good stuff from from one match considering she hasn't played in At least two months. I think maybe even closer to three months it was very wasn't that she sustained that cough test so Obviously she'd have liked to have one but she kind of got everything other than a dopey from that much danielle collins. I love watching daniel collins. She she reels me. Writing with the intensity over. I feel like i'm in a vortex it's brilliant. She's just she's just great. I know there was a slightly controversial incident which daniel collins agrees was a controversial incident. She took her. She took a medal medical time out before it was was to serve to stay in the match and tunnel. Collins ended up breaking and winning the match and apologizing to simona highly apart the net for doing that. She said locos just in so much pain. I had no choice. I don't want to be that person that that exploits the rule in that way and not sure simona harp was desperately in the mood for a kiss and make up moving. I mean she was dignified. But chilly i would say well. She was asked about in her press conference. I saw and and one quote in the middle of her answer was something along the lines of. Yes some some players just need to go to that. If if it's not going away it was that kind of thing is all penco esque. It was sandwiched by two lovely pieces of bread which were completely understanding of it and congratulating her parent for for her excellent tennis and actually as you say viewing the loss in a positive light berry. Mind how she played given it was her return. Shiels absolutely care. That's stuff goes on and isn't exactly all right. I mean collins did hyper-extended her knee. That was quite obvious and it did look like she was in kuala pain She was just returning so well. The whole match hallett couldn't shake free of her. I think you know. If i think how does have a weakness it probably is her second serve and collins just poundstone. At every opportunity circumstances it would take for daniel collins to sort of back off a service return. You take a step back and not try to have all of them. I mean just doesn't ever seem to. That's going forward isn't it. Yeah it's It's quite a sight. Yeah i thought. I thought it was a great mansion. Yes there was that moment but it it really did feel like collins who's just the sharper match player as i said how it couldn't finish her off and she played very well not even well just because she hadn't played for three months. This was a good level from hallett even if she played last week so i think that's a really positive sign for her that she seems to be free of that injury and he's never really done that well in new york. She spoken about not actually liking the hustle and bustle of it. She's had a couple of runs but it has been her weakest slam. And i think in similar ways to to a golf run and then undress goof around i would i would love hallett run in new york. I mean we're gonna run out of spaces for the place. We want to have runs but i think how that how that would be high on my list as well i was. I was reminded. Changeover watching her play. Tennis as well. She had that much. I ran against sharp over a century. Call a few years ago and and she's come up against canopy hasn't sheets big hitters the dangerous to her early on your. I've got that quote by the way her exact quote in the middle of this answer first of all she said it was tough for me because after two hours and a half to get more than ten minutes break is not fair before the serve. I think this rule is not good at all as she says some players when they don't trust they can win with the game. They ask the medicals then. They run better than before but she. She said she said at the end. She said credits her because she played.

"The senate but the fact the madonna. Mcdonald's came out fighting He's been he's great. he's a great talent. And i think consistencies the thing that will poets back. Think today i think in that final he kinda showed it. And i think he was able to kind of all of the day's lost points Behind him yeah. He's had get himself over the line but it wasn't wasn't easy for him to do and i think mentally that was so impressive about the cinema performance. Yeah when you say many challenges and then the you know getting the yugoslav recreate. Those jobs isn't just like clean slate. Let's let's focus on each point. And i mean we saw that as well in the daniel collins win which will get onto a bit later as well but yet in a very exciting time for him going into kind of the most is level events and then the like. What can he do for the rest of this year. So you can swing. Because he's made the perfect star and osa mckenzie mcdonald. Probably not someone you wanna come up against in in the coming up tournaments. Because he's he's getting you know he's been improving this this season i think he got to the fourth round of the so now into his first final. Hopefully he can stay injury-free and build on that. I swear we just associate because he done with the australian open. You had that had that batch. She gets A few a few years ago but yeah the story the story for him. He feels like he's like i think twenty five twenty six now injuries. Hopefully injuries are behind him. And he's just been. I think a slowing calm steady improve the disease. Then you look him on coal and i think he doesn't look the most imposing figure but he sort of reminds me a little bit of of how well kind of cam nor is doing. The season in terms of that game is a bachelor and he just makes the most. I think of his is talent. I certainly i think kind of showed that this week. Particularly with some of the victories he kind of pulled up because he beat kei nishikori in really tyke three-set battle in the semifinals out dennis cutler is while elliott ivanka and he took out a nick. Carry us in in the first round in straight-sets who is the defending champion. So you know we've had some very very good wins this week and generally speaking for american tennis at the maidment. It's been it's been on. The men's side is been really really impressive stuff there over the last couple of weeks. You must have been really annoyed. They beaten at tighter. You're looking to carry on and an wolpe a i was like. I don't know that would be for carrier. Say defending champion particularly. I think the fact that that were full full full crowd in In washington so i thought he would absolutely love the atmosphere coupled with big fatty. In your house like yeah. Surely he'll come. Come come through but dodo to give us that. Grad stabat sheds bed wallpaper. The at least maybe some of us wanted but no it was. It wasn't too bad but Yeah i think yeah. I think nick was probably disappointed with the mangrove that but the fact that mcdonnell went on to get to the final property says something about the you know the level that mcdonald was bringing to the core. Yeah and akshay kiro set that his head was in the shed after leasing that much he was particularly both of the two either way he you know he lost that much but he he was kind of saying he didn't really care that he lost an bit worrying because if he's actually that invested in what's happening on the core like does he really want to be there and you know yes. He hasn't played law and sort of just connie coming back into it but he was sort of saying he's he doesn't really feel like how he should or how he used to get used to get very worked up an emotional on the court say really kind of needs to rediscover his his mosier because even with the crowd that he just wasn't wasn't failing at yeah. That's what i was asked why. I was surprised by because you took quite him. He was saying. I actually missed the days when i was losing and i was carrying on and i was getting fined and i was frame my rackets. That just meant the cattle archie cad. What was happening now. i lose. i'm actually happy for the guy it was. Yeah it was. I think surprising to hear those comments and you know we know. I think nick carry offices either. His character i think has changed. I think dare. I say the pandemic has has changed him but It feels like at the moment. Yeah he's he's lacking that little bit of energy and not an x factor. The i guess gets him up in the morning in terms of playing on the tower. And i think that sort of coupled with the fact that he's not had a lot of experience in as much as he is a great talent and a great kind of competitor. He's just not had much much. Tennis is probably thinks he wants to be able to do is just not letting him do that at the moment and i think that was the case in in round one in in dc. Losing donald in straight-sets Yeah i think it was. It was disappointing and fa carry us. Maybe he needs to go away in. I think maybe get angry but maybe angry with a more sort of constructive positive sort of output as opposed to the fines the bands and with soda. Stuff that i think we saw that we saw pre pandemic..

Beyond The Baseline
Storylines from Roland Garros 2020
"Everyone John, we're up here in this week's sports illustrated tennis podcast late Wednesday night we have reached the round of four. We've reached the semi. Draws so Jamie and I will talk some tennis from Roland Garros and. We would try to keep it sufficiently general. So the school be absolutely by the time you're listening Jamie how are you? I'm good. How are you from a little little cold but no complaints it's been spin. French Open like no other, it's been an interesting interesting time so far but you know the the good news is Kobe hasn't really become the story, and if we're talking about the chilly weather and not a global pandemic, that's a win in itself. In here, we are at the business end of our second major in four weeks. You're cold or office cold. I think some other players are cold I think joke just cold I've seen a lot of PARKAS. I actually double check the weather temperature today because I said, how cold is it? Really there people are inferred jackets and you know Winter Winter Parkas I think some people look like they're going skiing. Is it really that cold I? Mean you're you have survived many New York winters what's going on? Oh boy I'll say a few things. One of them is that whatever the temperature is it is that an accurate indicator is has that sort of British chill where you're. Just coal to the bones. You know I mean obviously for for athletes it's it's different. You're running around your your body's warming up than stopping as rob pointed out I think some of this is just what people are accustomed to. There's a part of me that doesn't mind it. You know we we played tennis in extreme conditions or extreme heat must failure I think it probably speaks well of the sport that same players that win when it's one hundred twenty degrees or winning when it's forty nine degrees. I would say that I think this has had a bit of an impact, not so much on the level of play but I don't think the caliber of play has dropped because everybody is. Dressed like they're going skiing I think it hasn't changed the mood in the vibe and we've got Novakova did and it's it's just funny how these tournament sort of change as they progress but there there is not been as far as i. can tell a whole lot of Kobe fear doesn't seem to be much of the talk it doesn't come up much in press conferences. Does, players like Daniel Collins shoot it down, but it's been if this is not the French Open that people are used to and I thought at the US Open the apparel manufacturers missed a golden opportunity not to do more with the surface area of these masks. Why not put a? Cough alligator or Nike swoosh mask, and here it's time to show off the winter gear in the Lacoste and Nike. And Adidas Park aware because as soon as the vitamins you've seen like as soon as the players. Get done leaving the court they as a record it Patrick of did it they all put on Ski Jack So It's been a twist on the tournament but again I mean. For the last six months you and I have been talking about. Bubbles and pandemics, and how are we going to get athletes from all over the world? Into into a common spot. And the fact that the talk has been a lot about. Tennis and conditions and scheduling and doubles and singles in wide open draws. And not about players tested positive I think is a good sign. For sure. I wanted to ask you I was reading and piece by CPS ignore and he he said that you know it was about the handshakes in about, of course, how they're really not happening anymore the racket touch. is now has now replaced it, and so I actually thought twenty because in the past few matches, we've actually seen some players after you know after the match in in the t match, he did it and there was some others where you know. They go to the night in a do this very strange hesitant high five or maybe there is a little bit of an embrace and course you sit there and you cringe and you say, oh no, they're touching each other amino they're so close I talk about Kobe and all this What is Of the players talked about the handshake what about you just watching? On my end I feel like You know a lot of after really great matches long matches. It's nice to see two opponents kind of embrace each other or just kind of you know pat each other on the back for for a hard-fought match and we don't see that what what are your thoughts on on just the lack of handshakes in this cova time. Yeah. You see handshakes like if you have. I have this thing where like I'll watch an old movie your you'll cringe and say, no social distance, oh. Yes. This was a bill before March of twenty twenty. So, yeah you see these these. Sort of belly paths or the even the on the shoulder at the you know the net you know I, mean I always loved the handshake I recited would've tennis is nice quirks. You spend hours battling with this opponent, and then the very first person you bake human contact with is that same opponent When Ron Swanson say about handshakes after the for dry and. In three seconds or something like that it's it's great. Now I mean the racket tap is a little bit strange in some players are are not even doing that other players are as as you know, there are have been a couple of exceptions. Dominant team seems to be a a serial offender which probably ultimately speaks well of him and it has has actually gone gone the hand I. He did what after the US Open finally did there were some some contact against Schwartzman I. Don't know I feel at some level you've been. You've been hitting a sweaty tennis ball back and forth for three hours at your opponent is touch. you know none of us are perfectly convicted and our Kobe protocol and the same person who watches groceries is. Also holding the poll on the subway. Think I think we all have a inconsistencies. I have to think if you've been using the same tennis ball as as another opponent and your bodily fluid is getting on that same tennis ball I don't know if you brush palms at the net for a second to is that really so bad but yeah. I mean there are a lot of sort of jarring little twists I mean the lack of a crowd I think has been especially acute here in France especially when French players have taken the court because often the the fans try to impose themselves on the match here Dan. Is it really happening? it'll be interesting to see what stays in what doesn't I mean if I never see another ball kid and all towel again, that's that's probably a good thing It's very strange doing a courtside interviewed a math. It'll be interesting to see I mean I think we're already sort of looking to twenty twenty, one I suspect there will be him shakes at the twenty twenty one Australian Open because the players will of quarantine for two weeks and essentially what what I'm wants the players were there. And test negative in are in this this quarantine situations that they they don't even have to wear masks

Yes, there are questions about the ultimate tennis showdown mat-su. Dust off your knuckles. He's easily in fighting mood today's map because as I look at him here on my laptop screen. He is wearing his Fulham shirt. You Resplendent Matt. Early on the Fulham, sure we didn't kick off for another ten hours or so, but yes quite quite nervous today, but wearing them colors, mets team Fulham. Playing in the first leg of the playoffs, this is stage one three in their attempt to get promoted back to another season of misery in the primarily. Alongside David, he's already confirmed. Be Subjecting himself to a year of misery in the primarily next season. I e the night before I watched. My, team just stumble over the finish line I watched. What fit in the Premier League Neil four down against Manchester ccn about half an hour and Really, did change my mind as to whether I wanted to go open all. It made me. It made me think you know my. Maybe, think back to when we were when we were booking and planning a trip to the French Open. and. Planning our early days. shedule around your. Travel to the playoff finals. Wembley I said, would it be okay if I trip back to London for the final during the French? Open and we decided that that would be content gold, yes. And then the universe conspired against us, and here we are six months later, making more lockdown content. Enjoy everyone. But we love to listen to questions ones, don't we? It gives us a chance to rant and rave and. Give! Opinions about things and it is drew David. They've. Picked out the best of the questions from social media they've they've come up with some of their own as well. And a good questions quite meaty, so proposals fakes ready. Oh Yeah Yeah. Matt's never looked already had a haircut. He's yeah. What do we think of the haircut? It's pretty dramatic as he did. Go four and a half months without touching. Any haircut would have been quite dramatic because. Quite. Did You keep the her? No. As I said God. What A WEIRD QUESTION OKAY! To lockdown, everybody being on. We'll obviously quite a lot of questions that have come in about lockdown about covert about how it's going to affect tennis. Is Kind of unavoidable to to address all of those issues. And try and speculate about a completely unpredictable. Because frankly that's what the situation has been in instill is but. We make our money by predicting the unpredictable say goes. It? I I question. will go with the something covid related. Is the players responsibility to do what safe for themselves or is it? The tournaments responsibility to guarantee safety regarding covert. A Nice easy one. To to to ease yourselves and he wants to take that. Why I don't think it is possible to guarantee anything really you know. The the tournaments rinsed Francis the US Open. It is incumbent upon them to create the safest environment possible and to convince the plaza, the bubble that they are creating and the passage they're creating into that bubble is a secure as possible, but ultimately the players have got to decide whether that's something that they are prepared to do whether. They're comfortable to do whether they're. Also prepared to stay within an environment like that because they cannot be breaking the protocol. We've seen in world team. Tennis. They from what it seems like did a pretty decent job of creating a bubble. Daniel Collins decided to go elsewhere. for I, I mean she. She did say it seems that she needed some treatment for her. What's the condition? She has rheumatoid arthritis which Kim. You know okay. I sympathize with her, but. She brought the bubble and therefore got thrown out a world team tennis. We saw Griego Dimitrov who tested positive for. ovid's during the until. gave an interview last night and He's had a really terrible time with illness I. Probably mild symptoms relatively speaking and yet he said he was in bed for three weeks and he's still feeling the effects of it now so. Players have got to make the call as to how much of a risk they're prepared to take. HOW COMFORTABLE LEAD! Enduring, cyber, there is it is impossible to guarantee safety I think.
