"But he didn't get a chance to play that long. And they started to change the guidelines. I guess you can say, based on how good you were, it is shorter amount of time. Because when you look at Tony, that injury really took him out. Completely, I remember him trying to come back when he went to Houston and try to play with one arm. Greg literally had his arms strapped down by his side. And you look at him and it's just like, he with 5 good years. Yeah, it's crazy because I was just thinking as you're saying that, Terrell Davis, the Broncos running back came to mind. Same thing. Kurt Warner, but Terrell Davis, where it was about a four year career, very short, but you just think about the differences in positions where Terrell Davis playing the position that he did and the way he did it, it's just going to, there's a wow factor that comes into play a lot more in that regard than it will, for an offensive tackle. And that's not to sell Tony basile short. It's just harder to impress. If your career doesn't last as long. You're right. And when you look at Tony from 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000. He started in 90 games. Started 90 games and played 91. That's not a lot of games. No. And but when you look at it, he was a 5 time pro bowler, three times all pro. That in itself, he was all night on the all 90s team. So for Tony, his body of work, I always thought, greatness. You know, as you can prolong your career greatness over time was one of the key reasons you would get into the Hall of Fame. I was a decade. I look at your Thomas. Joe Thomas played wood. What did you play 12 years? He was great 12 years. And injury is part of the game. So unfortunately, if you're great in injury, takes you out of the game, you know, that could be held against you. And it was for a long time. And now people are guys and voters are seeing past that. They're just looking at and you said it with Terrell Davis, Kurt Warner, Tony boselli, now they're looking at, okay, what'd you do when you play? What'd you do when you play? And I'm okay with that. I really am. At first I was like, ah, you know, and you've got at least ten years. But if Tony was telling it doesn't hurt his owner, he's going down and probably one of the greatest offensive tackles ever played. That's just what it will be. And so for me, I just think. It's well worth it. I think it's well worth it. And it's deserved. It took him a while to get in because people were wrestling with that. And for me, as a contemporary, someone who looked up to Tony when he played, I feel like watching him get into the Hall of Fame, I feel good about it. Because I know how hard the position is to play, I remember he was going against Jason Taylor when Jacksonville was playing Miami and I mean, you want to talk about going at it. It was like a brawl, a bar fist fight, and I remember a long run had broken out, I was a long pass and Tony basile was going down the field and he started backpedaling, looking at Tony looking at Jason Taylor and waving his hands like, come on. Right? And I'm like, this is like some UFC stuff. It was unbelievable. So I take my hat off to Tony. He didn't play as long as he wanted or as long as we wanted to watch him play, but he definitely deserves it. Yeah. Now it's always an interesting conversation like that. What creates, really, it's just an impact in your mind. You know what I mean? Like, what leaves an impression? And that's always an interesting thing to me, positioned by position because some positions lend themselves to creating a bigger impression in your mind, especially as in the mind of a voter. You know what I mean? It's always interesting when it comes to that. There were actually former offensive linemen that were campaigning for Bryant young to get into the Hall of Fame. They were like, we went up against this guy. For a decade. He was a freaking nightmare. Hard to block, brother. When I tell you you got to bring your a game, man. Yeah. Former offensive lineman, there was including Willie roof. Another great one. I played in that era. And people always ask me, how come you don't make a Pro Bowl? Did you see the guys my contemporaries doing my career? Yeah, there you go. Sure. No way. Look, look, I was good, but there was no way I was as good as those guys. Yeah. Yeah, but that was an interesting thing where Mark schleyer was on that crew. They did a Zoom call for the voters and were just singing the praises of Bryant young, who was more of a lunch pail guy. Oh, right? Are you gonna bring it? Didn't get a lot of, he wasn't an edge guy, even though he can play out there as well. Right. But that San Francisco, those Super Bowl teams, and that defense wouldn't have been what it was without Brian young, period. Him and Dana stubblefield. I know it right. That was kind of like the souped up version of John Henderson and Marcus smart. Yes. That's exactly what that was. That was in my life. Early on. I had to deal with to deal with that twice. A year. Lord. Yeah, that's a hard day at the office right there. People don't really realize just how hard Football. is. Because we get captivated by the quarter. It's a lot of quarterback conversation. And they're just throwing the ball. The running bank, he's running. Look at the moves. Look at his feet. Oh, you got the extra yard. And then you get captivated by the receiving. But like when you're in the trenches, when you're grinding, there is no applause. There is no fanfare. It is a, I'm bringing my hard hat and my lunch pill for three hours straight. And that's it. There is no glory other than the win. And I think I would assume you could attest to this. It's like when the game is over, you know who is a baller and who isn't. Depending on what position you play. If you're a cornerback, you're like, man, that wide receiver is legit or vice versa, but in the trenches, I would assume that you know it even more. When it is a physical, collision, you know at the end of the game, like, yeah, that guy's a baller. A bigger impression. You feel it in the locker room in the next day, you like, I feel like I got hit by a truck. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah, no doubt. All right, coming up next. There is an organization that's making a decision that makes zero sense to me whatsoever. We'll see what the big man thinks about this as well. I'm Brian no, he's from Salaam. "NFL podcast. I'm Gary Brantley. And I'm Conor. Boy Connor, if we had just a little more of a budget on this show. What I would have liked to do is on the Sarah McLachlan song like the servant locker room song. The I will remember you. So not at the not very wishful. Yeah, not the one that they try to use to get you to donate to the cold. Not the poor dogs and cats, yeah. Sorry. No, the other one. Yeah. Yeah, we should have run that out here to play sort of behind the farewell to Baker Mayfield rumors. That's it. We don't have any more shows to do where we pontificate and just sort of wonder out loud what's going to happen to Baker Mayfield. We know now. He's a Carolina panther. Yeah. Do you know what though? And we're going to obviously break down Baker Mayfield. We have a lot of in another really exciting segment on the show, which I'll hand over the teasing responsibilities to you. But so now that the Baker Mayfield to Carolina Panthers thing has happened, the rumors are null and void at this point, but we're going to do is now we're going to start watch this Jimmy Garoppolo to the dolphins, Gary, come on. Okay. Yeah. I get on board with that, yeah. Oh yeah. All right, all right. This will be ground zero for that completely unfounded rumor. And that Connor, the special segment that we're going to try here. Connor has come into, I would say a treasure wealth. Yeah, treasure trove of 1990s football cards, and we're going to do a little guessing game. He'll give me clues. Not visual clues who give me audio clues since this is a podcast after all. And I will try and guess the player. And I'll just, I will brag right off the top here. We did a practice round just to see if this would actually work before the show started. And I got Johnny Morton in what three clues? Three clues in the third clue. I forgot how awesome football cards were. It's so much better than Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a little more convenient, but it comes with a fun fact in the fun fact, which I'm sure is what sealed it for you is that Johnny Morton had three years at a Japanese elementary school. It just seems like a guy like that, yeah. Yeah, it just seems like a guy. Yeah, just curious about curious about life. Yeah, so this is going to be really fun. I'm excited to talk about this immense wealth that I have now inherited of Johnny Morton and Dana stubblefield cards. It's a very exciting time. All right, well, let's start this off with the Baker Mayfield news. Not quite news. It's been a couple of days now. I think it's sunk in a little bit, but let's do a quick recap of what the deal was. The Panthers get Baker Mayfield, the browns get a conditional 2024 5th round pick. Now we knew it would be Mayfield for traffic. That was always going to be the situation here. But the money is kind of interesting. I guess not terribly surprising. It has to be a little bit disappointing for Baker Mayfield and for the browns and for the pan. It seems like no one got what they wanted. This deal. The browns will pick up 10.5 million Carolina will pick up a little less than 5 million and Baker Mayfield will take a three and a half $1 million pay cut. In what was a non guaranteed year here at the end of his contract that extension year excuse me option year, they could have cut him and he would have just been starting from zero somewhere else. So I guess you saved a little bit, but there were reports that the Panthers wanted to take a $7 million pay cut, which, I don't know, man. It's so awkward. It was going to be impossibly awkward for him to stay in Cleveland, even if deshaun Watson was going to get a season long suspension. I mean, I don't know how you could walk in that locker room and look your teammates in the eye when they know you're the guy who just got pushed out for the guy with all the three dozen women accusing him of sexual misconduct. Now he goes to Carolina and it's like, okay, hey, fresh start. Maybe they're excited to have them and, you know, the report comes out like a day after the trade. Yeah, they wanted him to take even less money. They didn't think he gave back enough money. It's just a bigger Mayfield to a big boy. He's made a lot of money, but it's got to be a little bit of a shot to the ego once again. A 100%. It is such a strange circumstance and players players know. I mean, we've talked about that before we have heard former players talk about it. They're not dumb. They read pro football talk. They read SI dot com, hopefully. Like everybody else. The mmm. And they see the stuff out there that baker had to take a pay cut to get out of there. They know that the browns had no faith in him. They see all the smear tactics they're using to kind of legitimize the deshaun Watson thing on the back end. And so you've made his job somewhat more of an uphill climb. You're already saying that he's got a battle with Sam darnold and training camp. Which to me shows, you know, I get that you're trying to pacify everybody, but that is a tough situation, not only to put Matt rule in, but to put Ben mcadoo in because Ben mcadoo, if you remember correctly, took a really bad giants team to the playoffs, and then got fired the next year because of his inability to handle the politics of Eli Manning's sucking, you know? And that's why he lost his job. The long and short of it. He wanted to see developmental players. Gino Smith and Davis Webb. And giants fans got all haughty for some reason. And we're like, well, you never gonna buy a ticket again if I can't watch it. Rubber Eli Manning flail around my son is disgusted and, you know, all this stupid, stupid stuff. I'm quoting a letter. My ancestors were offended by this Eli Manning for our four and 11 team. It's like, come on, man. But the long and short of it is, I think you've put everybody in a bad spot. I think if you're Ben Mack, you do, by the way, Ben mcadoo told the New York Post after he was fired that he didn't like Baker Mayfield as a quarterback prospect. So you're putting a lot of people in really bad spots and I think what they have to do is they have to basically ensure that baker is so far and above better than Sam darnold and camp because you can't go into this season divided. And I think Matt rule knows that. I think Scott fitter knows that. I think Ben mcadoo knows that because all three of those guys are not getting a second shot at this if this doesn't work out. Because and we can get into this aspect of it as well. The Panthers have now traded a second round pick, a fourth and a 6th for Sam darnold, a 5th for Baker Mayfield and they traded up for Matt corral. So you've invested like almost an entire draft's worth of capital into your quarterbacking room and it might be one of the 5 worst quarterback rooms in the NFL. Yeah. Arguably?

I don't want to speculate too much about until the facts are clear in the case. But i'm very curious to see this was injured. I like i said. I don't want to speculate too much. What i think cabin. I'd rather know what what did happen. And i'm going to invite everybody to check out fit. Radio are good morning empire on friday morning where we'll probably be jamie. We'll probably be talking about this. 'cause we will probably have more details available on this but man it sucks it really really does suck and as far as i know. Richard sherman has never been involved in an incident off the field. As far as i know it sucks. I'm pretty sure you can kiss them. Back to the niners. By after ruben foster situation. I don't think that the niners are going to beef with that. Has any type of domestic violence situation. You know going on. Obviously we'll see what comes out in the case and you know sherman's record will be you know his he's gotta clean record so i'm pretty sure that will be taken into account so always the offer transition between real life and football life even though football is like We're going to go ahead and go into our all time. Forty niners defensive draft. We're going to start out on the d. line. And i think the d lives probably one of the easiest positions that you can do for the franchise obviously d. end. You're gonna have charles. Haley charles haley outside linebacker. Da and he's at war. I think makes a lot of sense. I mean honestly the best. I'm not gonna say the most talented 'cause i believe the most talented edge rusher team. His three is on smith but I mean charlie haley clearly the best edge rusher. She mystery outside linebacker. Rusher wherever you want to call it hall of famer and eddie. Dee didn't make too many mistakes. After the hiring of bill walls but one of the mistakes he did and he'll mitt is biggest mistake as owner was trading allowing charles haley to be traded to dallas Two girls for you know and obviously started their rise to power back to the niners many occasions. So we're gonna go to detangle yet again. Another while not pro football hall of fame but definitely this year will be officially inducted into this. Edward j debartolo senior hall of fame forty niner hall of fame in the nfl. All in the red and gold super bowl champion. Great guy ten times s award winner. I mean last night or chevy tires and have the carried off the field by his teammates. Just how many of really truly had that opportunity you know. That's another question. But i think. Byu deserves to get carried off the field by teammates all around great dude. Anybody who's ever met him said he's a great guy and honestly be wide needs to be in the hall of fame. I do not understand why he's not in the hall of fame and it is seriously really troubling that he is not going to are editor d. Tackle i'm going to go with. I know this'll be a controversial pick because it'll be other players they're available. But i'm gonna go with charlie crew. I think that charlie krueger dana stubblefield. I don't think you could go wrong either. Way you know as far as you know. Best player in one of the best players in the tackles in franchise history war your salary. I don't know why. Every time i do find early sundry coffee but yes charlie krueger. The other deanne slash outside linebacker. However you wanna look at. This is i. Don't think you can go anywhere else. Besides alden smith. I mean look.

"All right so we're back okay. So we decided to or actually before we get into what we're gonna talk about a little bit today We had some very very sad news within the empire this week. Former niner tight end. Greg clark has passed away From what i've been able to discover it was a suicide streaming sad man. I it's so sad like i remember greg clark. You know. I remember the two sounds. He had against the walkers in the playoff game and ninety eight. Ninety nine depending on how you look at it but definitely sad to see and Don't want please people you know if you ever feeling down playing. Let's say hit me up because you know who am i but find somebody because you know probably simplest way this was put to me and you know we'll get off the subject after this is that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem so i don't know what mr carcass going through. How am i going to say that when he was going to temporary. But you know. I really wish that didn't happen. And that really sucks but as always an awkward transition from real life news to to football but i aside we'll go ahead and i'm kinda just giving give my thoughts on where the twenty nineteen niners rank amongst teams throughout nine or history. That didn't win the super bowl and you know i. It's ultimately year year to say okay. Well look at the two teams. That didn't win the super bowl. Twenty twelve and two thousand nineteen wishing was better on paper. I'm out to give it to the twenty twelve team. Just because oh will they do it this way. Let's break it down Position group opposition group. Okay so obviously if we go defense twenty twelve versus twenty nineteen. I mean you you gotta start with the d. lie and you know all the smith justin smith you know braille franklin rarely pringle was team is acceptable ouaga. You know it's it's hard to compare because you know then we are three four defense and our four three defense so it. It's you know the d. lines were a little different but yeah you might be able to look at strictly numbers. I wanna look at it. Strictly numbers I wanna get you know player. Basis like okay. Hey who had the more talent. And i have to give to twenty twelve like. It's very hard because it's like okay. You had nick both I mean talent. Wise that by one of the best talented allies dider history. Just 'cause deforest buckner air armstead. You know. Nick boasts a and d ford. All first round picks for believe so is very difficult to look at the g. Line and and compare it to that but i mean i just i have to get the twenty twelve because all the smith like that was probably prime older smith. Both i believe is the overall better all around better player like all. This smith was just freak of nature. And it wasn't until i went and did a little research and watch a little highlights is out of twenty seven over again just really realized like while all was played a part time role and have fourteen year by. That's crazy to think it. A part time roles somebody got fourteen sacks you know nick bosa playing every game got nine now. I understand that you know you can't always go by numbers. But i take if you if you could tell me you can get arguments smith with his head on straight or nick bosa stinking. All in smith like i. I'm sorry i would love to have either. But i think i'm gonna take golden smith and if you'll get here like i said if you're looking at here pass rush peer pressure. I'm taking on the smith Just because i feel that. I feel that he's just better passer but if i'm looking around by every greed down player although it become that his second year i'm significant just because i feel that nick boast is better than the run game you know. There's a better overall player. But on smith is a better pass rush at injustice smith. I'm sorry yeah. Ford you know deforest buckner. But i'm not taking any of those players over the cowboy cowboy tonight love So i'm i'm sorry. I've been taking justice smith over everybody and then so i mean would you take you know dj jones. I guess we'll be the closest. We have the nose tackle now so you. Dj jones or isaac soap water. I guess you could say i take. Dj over over this. Oh man you know. But honestly i. I'm gonna give it the twenty twelve just because i think the tandem of other smith adjusted smith. You know the smith brothers. I'm sorry i just don't think that the niners twenty nine thousand nine hundred anything quite to that level They had a overall defensive dominant defensive wine but twenty twelve i. It was pretty much all smith injustice. You know brooks did his thing you know but navarre would blitz but that that was ultimately and i'm sorry that might be the best deal just as far as working off each other and everything that that i may have. I have ever seen maybe besides. Py and dana stubblefield so linebackers. I mean come on. I if not even close you gotta go twenty twelve. I'm patrick was to devolve. Did their prize look. I love everybody who watches. This show knows how much i love. Fred warner big degree fan. I do think that he might be slightly hyped up. But i do believe that. He's a solid starter in the league. And you can do a lot worse than drinking law especially on a rookie contract. So yeah i mean but you've got probably the best linebacker do nfl history. Plus you know ahmad brooks and all the smith although he would be an end in our defense now as smith and and Mark brooks ain't no slot and so although they probably both the end so you can't get better than than P dobbin and bo. So yeah you gotta give it to the linebackers and twenty nine thousand nine hundred twenty twelve versus twenty nine thousand nine Secondary now. This is where i think that the twenty nine hundred nineteen can make a little bit of case. You know we are yet college. Rogers tremaine brook trout brown.

"We don't win that game in nineteen to give green bay we don't we don't games in limbo and it's probably a different game. I'm not saying we can win but you know. So that's important. Now how do you. How do you force turnovers as not even so much and this will get into blitz rate. We'll get into a second as not so much. Oh sacks but it's pressure is speeding up the quarterback it's tips and overthrows and and so allowing having four to rush the quarterback so seven are in coverage you're having seven players cover five eligible receivers. You know running backs tight ends. Whatever your eligible p- pass catchers i guess so. I'm that that obviously that benefits the defense. The defense has more players in covers in the offense can send out on routes that's just automatically gonna benefit the defense and so does blitz rate in twenty nineteenth. We were twenty ninth in amount of times. We sent bliss and twenty twenty. We were tenth. So we're a top ten team blitzing team that that guy goes into now you're sending extra players choosing the extra player or two and now sending instead of having seven on five you having six on five or five on five. That again goes to the benefit of the offense especially if the blitz can't get home so at pudding pressure on the quarterback is important. Dennis brown talked about on the his. Mike heads Here's the catch. Podcast that you know back in the nineties. When the niners he was a second round pick and then they went and got dana stubblefield and they went got bryant young now. Why did they do that because they were building up. A d line football i. It's with the first football cliche. That was probably ever spoken was. Football is one in the trenches. Football games are one in the trenches. The worst pressure that you can have is is is. Well that will that will get a little bit into the offense to but office line The worst thing that you can do is have pressure up the gut and so what allows the pressure of the gut obviously having great interior players but also what the edge presence that's going to force a quarterback to step up alot air garbage said road that to a seventeen million dollar a year contract. Well it's not seventeen million a year but still that that was deported. Nick bosa basically serving quarterback on a silver platter for defoe and eric arm said between nineteen so fast forward to here. Twenty twenty one. That's nick bosa and player axe to be determined later for serving players on a silver spoon for javon kinlaw. So that's going to be important and yes. I do believe that is a better bigger. Need for the team than quarterback. We have a quarterback that can win as of all the roster right now well technically. His contract has expired. But you know. Carry haider's you'll be a free agent. We don't have him on the roster. Now if we bring in kerry hyder okay. Maybe it's less of a need and maybe you adjust on my second need that i would be happy with the niners. Going with over quarterback would be offered line and twenty are wind. Ray on espn are. Win percentage win rate that you know the offensive line one. The snap was fifty four percent. Which is one percent farther down to fifty five in twenty nineteen. Now i'm doing this show Everybody say detoro favorites now By boys over there. I'll talk to you a second towards are so it's important that sorry y'all that threw me off track. I didn't expect it to qatari. To come. Stay was up but So right guard as center are the issues. I mean like thomas. In the mayor's ms to snaps all season and just say any niner twenty twenty twenty that only two segued through steps you debris back if they're free agent like lincoln thomason and be that somebody you could bring on like we don't have to worry about the left side because his league townsville plagued thomas into world's greatest guard no but williams is the best left tackle in football. And so if you put a good guard which lake. Thomas is next to the best tackle in football or arguably may be barked ari but you are okay on the left side is the right side. What was the problem in the fucking super bowl. Right guard and center. Chris jones killing us in the fourth quarter. Jimmy had a rough quarter before. Yeah well maybe that's because he was getting pressure right in his frigging face. So getting offense wine is important and so everybody's quarterback quarterback quarterback week away with jimmy. Yes we can win with the office of line that we have now but if you sell me jimmy. Garoppolo injury prone. What do you mean to tell me that that that we gave up. I think i believe it was the third. Most quarterback hits in the nfl. Can we win. Giving the third most quarterback no quarterback can stay healthy like that. So you address the offense of line. A jimmy has a better chance of staying healthy or whatever quarterback is back there so to me. Is the issue quarterback could we upgrade of course. But it's the issue quarterback issue a lot. I think the issues align everybody all. We need to throw the ball. How you think this align can block for depots really really you really think that mike mcglinchey twenty nine twenty twenty status block four five six seven seconds to allow deep all the development. The fuck out of here breath so everybody screaming for line for quarterback. I'm not saying that. I wouldn't want wanna job. Zack wilson or i. I wanna drop the best player available and i think the one of the best players available that we can get without sacrificing. Too much of the future is indeed line.
