Can you elaborate on what you meant by that post and what it means to have healthy boundaries. Yes so i am a big fan of boundaries and boundaries are about protecting ourselves so they're not about controlling changing or trying to control anyone on their side of the street. it is really about keeping our side of the street clean and making sure. Our interactions with others are away. That support us. So when. I'm when i'm setting these boundaries. What i'm saying is distance how i if i'm going to be in relationship with you. This is to be treated about andres. Then i need to set some limits. Because i'm not okay treated that way and so we don't have boundaries what happens is we allow whatever anyone says or does to get in our space and impact us. So if i don't have boundaries. I may let someone scream and yell at me. I may let someone go through my stuff without asking. I may allow those microaggressions to occur and not address them. Be the message. That i'm sending what i'm doing is that it's okay versus if i set those boundaries. Then what i'm saying is i will not be yell that and if it continues i'm gonna step outside of the room. I'm going to hang up the phone. So i'm telling them hey. I'm not going to be treated that way now. I can't control whether they continue it or not. But i can't control my behavior and whether i continue to allow it so i may step out of the room like i. I may choose to end the relationship. I may choose to set some more guideposts to protect myself.

"If you could just give us the recipe that you heard people are supposed to use when they launch a podcast. And then maybe we could talk a little bit more later about your specifically what you did in your pre launch. You said I didn't do 6 weeks. But what's kind of like this plan that you've heard in the past? Well, I've heard that you first of all need to really drill down on your avatar. So you need to know who your demographic is, and you need to be able to name this person and you need to be able to feel this person's pain. And you need to be so in touch with your avatar that when you do a podcast, that person is who you are broadcasting to. Didn't do that. And then I also heard that, of course, you're supposed to have several episodes in the bank. So you should have, I've heard anywhere from 6 to 35 episodes just stored so that you can constantly produce content. We see a lot of podcasts, ghosting that happens where people will launch a show and then you don't hear from them for like 6 weeks, and you're like, that's kind of hard, especially for a new podcast to follow. And so I didn't have anything in the bank. Like I said, I literally made the decision on Friday and did the first episode on Saturday. So I feel like all of the traditional rules, all the equipment, I was literally getting equipment in as I was recording the show. My husband would be like, hey, Amazon just delivered something and I hit pause and I ran downstairs to see what it was. I mean, it was so janky. I don't recommend anybody start the way that I started.

"We were both kinda like wool and imagine the muji where the face is all across. That was we. We were instantly friends like that really brought it together. Because i think we laughed and didn't go to the rest of the conference and we just not in hung out of new york bounced friends ever since and then we became business partners that happened. That happened really slowly over time. And i think a big part was because we were realizing that our businesses were the same. And we we were doing exact same thing and i think it really came to a head when you when you when you denounced hall thirty like that was really for us because we knew that he was in the making for a long time because we talked about it so much but i feel like once that happened. It was kind of inevitable that we were gonna start working together even more because we kept talking all the time and comparing our your Our perspective is a lot and we saw the same things. I may not have been a whole thirty catch. I was steeped in this vaccine. Stop that you are steeped in prior to that too and on i think we like from a professional level. We just really bonded in In seeing the damage that those types of things can can cause is and we talked about it a lot and seeing it in our clients in being like we can do this anymore and so he started talking about. What could we do instead. And we didn't know what we were doing. and at the time We just kind of like you know bonded over that and businesswise. Yeah in one of the interesting things was we. This was something that we didn't really see until at least i was out of school. I think you maybe were still in school at the time right. But we started to think back to our schooling both in grad school and then at i n and one of the things that i and does and they liked pride themselves on one hundred fifty different dietary theories and they also encourage their students to try a bunch of these different diets in the name of health right and so at the time. It was like oh cool. I'm trying all these different things. And then we look back on it now and even a couple of years ago. We're like ooh that is really disordered. What is happening here. And then we had started to see the kind of way that food is medicine. As taught in our grad school could be really disordered for people to and we were like. Oh this is weird and we started having those discussions and we were like wheat. Somebody's gotta be talking about this like it can't be only us. That's been talking about it. And then when i had started to talk about like seeing those patterns in the whole thirty and as i used to be a whole thirty coach right like however many years ago that was and then you're like you were encouraging me for so long you're like you gotta get out. You gotta get pro for like a year before. I was like okay. We're done anymore. It was like i was in a bad relationship. And you're like dana. You gotta leave. And i was like no but it's not good for you but i like it..

"It's only you out there on the platform in everyone staring at you. Are you gonNa make this lead or you not gonNa make this left right. It's very economist thing. It's like yes you made it. No you didn't make it and then it's like who lifted the most weight and that's it that's who wins But if you're not in a place where you think that you can come out of this and be okay. It's not going to mess up your relationship with food. It's not gonNA make you want to go back to counting or it's not GonNa make you a want do calories or macro start restricting or whatever it is then if you really want to compete still. I would just recommend like don't compete in a way closer. Don't cut for a weight class like just compete as you are because honestly if you're concerned about the competition like you're going to be able to lift more weight if you're not malnourished raise. There's I could probably talk about this for hours. But I mean once you start to work on this like non dieting journey and being more neutral with your body in food like you still continue to learn a lot about yourself every day with every situation that comes up and that's why last year. I was really iffy about competing because I was like. Wow at this really good place. But I don't know if this is GonNa kind of push me back into a territory where I don't WanNa go now that I've competed. I know that I'm okay with it but I will say like it's taken me a long time to get here and I don't know that everyone. I know who competes is really in a good spot to be competing to be weight classes. Absolutely yeah definitely is an individual thing and there's a lot that goes into it so I really appreciate you sharing everything you did on the show. Today there are so many layers to uncover. There are so many different possibilities to consider and I feel like for a I mean. I feel like in some ways. My listeners won't be shocked by anything they heard but there are some days that may challenge what they great and in or what they're currently doing and so I think it's just important to provide those different possibilities perspectives on. "Actually possible like what if he's not dead what does he is like living in another dimension. and He's good and then I started to think about that right and I was like. Oh this is just this is just a world that we live in. And what if I can have relationship with him on the other side as an angel or an entity or whatever and everybody's got different spiritual beliefs and I'm not here to push mine on anybody. I don't even know fully no mine. Are I just know that there were certain things that I started to think What is what's possible and it's starting to feel better and my whole thing is like if it makes me feel better? And it's a healthy coping mechanism. Some people might say. I'm a little delusion I you know I got to create a world where ended up having a relationship with my brother and I was able to communicate with him and get guidance from him right. I was like Oh what do you think about this. I'm so weird but like it's you know for a lot of people who grieve that's something that becomes very healing for that. Yeah I mean he's there are going to be a lot of people who don't agree with your or whatever but you can't while I guess you can but not great eight to disagree with whatever works for someone. Whatever coping mechanism they use whatever positive force they use in order to deal with their own agree for their own situation right? Like it's not hurting anyone else. You're not like you said you're not imposing it on anyone else you do whatever works for you and no one should be able to tell you different right and I think he you know you make a really great point and right now we're talking about grief and loss which is an extreme topic in my opinion but this could be anything right like this could be. There's a lot of people that we both work with who they're doing something different with their career. That's outside of the box and their family or friends. I don't get it and that creates a lot of friction for that but at the end of the day it's like who cares like who cares cares if they get it or not. What if you could release your attachment to them getting it? There's a part of you that things they need to get it right or you know we love who we we love. You love somebody in your family's like not into it or not supportive like yes. That's disappointing and the hope. And the prayer ultimately is like four people to be more loving but at the end of the day. It's also like no you love you love and you get to choose what you choose and so I think the other thing that that's possible here here is not caring so much what other people think and making our choices and really choosing our choices we say. Oh Yeah I made a decision but then it's like we you spend the rest of the week analyzing decisions. It was like well. Did you actually make a decision and I will say Dana. There's so much I knew you had your own experiences with his chew. But there's so much the freedom and actually deciding so I would like decide something like I am going to get rid of my lime and then any evidence.

"Month and now back to the show so for those of you who are listening. I want you to do the same. Think about a trigger so might be something big and emotional so as Dana shared with hers. Something that really triggers you pisses you off and it can also be something little like when you're in traffic on your way to work or you know like if you spill Oh your coffee or something on yourself on your way and it just like sets off your day and you just feel so frustrated and aggravated or you come home from work and your kids leave their bags over their schoolbags. All over the house in the cleanup them like something that just triggers union. Look off. Just don't do that. Just go away. Just be better just just just me better so when it comes into the emotional trigger release and perhaps Dana. I'll send you these these steps you can put them in the show notes because okay perfect easier to see it The first step is acknowledging. What the trigger is So Dana for you noticing the way that people are speaking about holidays and having to shut this weighed in that whole concept that is the trigger peace and for others in the car. Your kids what it might be the. The actual physical trigger is the first component so identifying identifying that the next step is to understand what a motion arises in you because of this trigger so for your daily. Obviously you're pissed off it. interestrates you at aggravates you you want to just tell people want things in their faces. They go away because too. It's like that the reason that that that annoys me so much because when people are in I guess you could say a position of power or position of influence right and then when they're you're saying something like that to waive vulnerable group of people. Let's say they know it's going to rub them a certain way and that it's basically to drive a certain behavior VR. And it's like you so I'm thinking of like gyms in particular right like I used to go to this gym in my area until it. I realized it was super diety. It was like I cannot be a part of this but they would be like you know like remember. Your goals earned that Thanksgiving whatever or like earned the Christmas whatever and it's like Oh God sadly you're damaging so many people and so like frustration and sadness and being pissed off and all of the above. So what would you say is the core emotion that you feel when you think about this Probably one of those three I would say probably frustration then Okay and for those of you listening as well consider for yourself. What is the core emotion so not just like annoyance? What if you were to go a little bit deeper? One is the core emotion that really bothers you. That really frustrates. Your whether it's the sadness or the anger whatever might come up And then so. That's it's the second step is acknowledging what that emotion is and then the third step is going a little bit deeper and trying to find out what is the fear or the subconscious belief that is is underneath that emotion so Dana for you without frustration. And we don't have to go fully into this if you don't want to but I'm an open book cool. Okay okay so like what. What is that that tore rooted fear or that subconscious belief underneath that is causing you to be so aggravated be so frustrated by this trigger? What is that that foundational fear element.

"Holiday season one year. And maybe even just set yourself. I'm not gonNA worry about this anymore and just I have fun but you're after year we still feel like it gets away from us and it's that that holiday anxiety can feel like you're either enjoying it too much or not enjoying them at all and inevitably you might start saying things yourself like. This is the year I'm going to stick to all these healthy habits so I don't feel like I start over in January or on the flip side you've tried that in the past and realize it didn't work so you give up before you've even started figuring ring you'll just start with a clean slate in January but whatever it is that you're you're studying to resolve in the new year. The overwhelming feeling. Is that something needs to be resolved and and they you're just GonNa Grin and bear it until the new year and this is what we want to develop more today and talk about what the root of this is and what we find to be the number one in kind of like wolf seed that were all like unintentionally aching. That's also largely influenced it through our cultural kind of conversation around this time of year. And that's where Dana is gonNA come in to talk about that. Good morning, friends, or honestly, whatever time you listen to this podcast that it currently happens to be while. You're listening today. We have a very intriguing episode. I guess you could say we're taking a long hard look about what we believe about ourselves and why so, yeah, this one is going to be a little bit of a deep one. So today's interview is with Amy Smith, who, as a self-proclaimed SAS life coach who specializes in all things confidence, who helps aspiring bad SS, stand up for themselves without being assholes. So yeah, you guessed it. There is some swearing in this episode. So if you don't appreciate it, you might not like this episode. However, I know that you probably will like the content. So what Amy is trying to tell all of her clients, and everyone that she speaks, you is that it's time to let go of all of the people pleasing and, cultivate, some serious self worth in the meat of this episode. We are talking about the fear. Of not belonging of people pleasing and why it's so detrimental to our mental and physical health our beliefs about worthiness, and how they drive our behaviors constant comparison and perfectionism and basically, all of the things this is kind of like Bernie Brown type episode. If I can call it that this is the type of episode where if you're anything like me, you'll want to listen once, and then probably listen again, and maybe take some notes and do some serious thinking about your life, and how these things we're talking about have played out in your own life because that's exactly what I did. And by the way, yes, again, if you don't like cursing, you probably won't like this episode, but there are knowledge bombs sprinkled into this episode. No, not sprinkled into this episode. It's like a waterfall of knowledge, bombs about beliefs about yourself and worthiness, and the fear of not belonging n people pleasing and perfectionism and all the things and I know you guys are gonna love it. I would love if you could. Well, introduce yourself to the listeners and then also tell us more about your personal health, journey specifically about confidence and boundaries. And how you even learned about what those concepts were in the first place. Oh man. While I love first of all, that, you, you incorporate the health piece, because I think a lot of times we don't realize that some of the reasons why we have a stomach ulcer might be because of our relationship with their mother over, we don't a lot of times, we like to compartmentalize our internal narrative, and what's happening with us versus our external body, our health, it's very much tied together, so mice nation is I'm assuming that there are many people out there who can very much relate, so a bit of context that grew up in extremely conservative born again, Christian family and my father had a masters. Divinity and a doctorate in ministry. So I mean we were fucking around over there. And so I grew up with a lot of dogma around, what was right and wrong and just a lot of motivation from fear and guilt. And a lot of shame. And there was a lot of kind of why am I apart of this family? Gosh, you know, I'm disag- Centric kind of wild hearted child who just would love to have been in a hippie commune in here. I am you know, the total bible, thumper. And I'm like, what, how did they warn into this fan? So fast forward, probably I dunno almost three three decades and I had the I, I guess I should say fortune, and misfortune to lose my father in os seven and I say fortune just because it really was one of the most beautifully intimate experiences to be with somebody as they passed. And so the day of my father's service, I had. A very rich career in a makeup artistry at the time. So I knew without a shadow of adult that a I was going to speak at the service and B I was gonna do his makeup, the actual mortuary makeup for his deceased body. So here I am thinking I'm daughter of the year award. I'm speaking to this crowd of hundreds and I'm doing makeup on my father, and my mom later, that day found it the most opportune time to say that she felt that that my father and heard failed and that because the three of us myself and my two siblings. My two brothers weren't quote walking with the Lord, now another bit of context. I was I was by all context. The good child, I had started working since I was fourteen I worked in a company that paid for my tuition, I paid for all my college myself got married. When I was young moved out both my brothers did jail time. I mean, it was sort of this. How the hell can you want me in and say, like your children are disappointments? And the only thing that I could really muster kind of in that moment was to say, well, you probably shouldn't say that to child, and she kind of just well that's just how I feel. In that I think was kind of impetus for me to realize that there were going to be costs to actually standing up for myself, and there would be a cost. Conversely, of not standing up for myself. And what that meant was, I was gonna have to choose between making them happy or making me happy. And when it came down to that I chose me and the trajectory thereafter was extremely combative adversary oil when I kind of found my- flooding and was like, no, this is who I'm about, I'm, I'm a liberal, and I met, you know, I love free lab. And I'm you know all these things. And it kind of came out of the Christian closet, so to speak. I or the agnostic closet, I guess, my, my relationship with my mom became extremely combative. And I just I wanted to talk about all the things let's talk about abortion. Let's talk about gay rights. Let's talk about, but let me just take you to school on all these things, and it wasn't until having some blowout fights in and being so incredibly embarrassed of my behavior in realizing that there's a different way to communicate that I kind of stumbled upon what I what I teach now which is, this dichotomy of you can speak up for yourself. You can be incredibly assertive, but you can also be extremely kind in loving and compassionate at the same time. But I'm sure you see this to a lot of times in our society. It's a we'd want to get anything done. You must dawn the masculine, and you must be aggressive in better not ever be vulnerable and got. So that, that. Kind of has been what has led me to doing the work that I do now. Which is twofold, it's knowing internally, that, who you are matters, that your voice matters, your wants your opinions your needs all matter. And then the external piece of okay, we'll know how does that relate to actually communicating with people in my life? What does it sound like to establish a boundary with my inlaws Sangley, please? Don't see my kid, hyper riposte corn syrup, or please don't take them to the church that I don't believe in, or hey spouse, I actually think I want a divorce a quarter of the things that you say in these really tumultuous polarizing situations. So that's, that's kind of what I do in my little corner of the internet. Yeah. So that is so cool. And so how tell me about that, like transition period when you're having all this strife with your family and stuff. And then you kind of had this like a Pitney of this is how I'm gonna stand up for myself. How did you then transition to? Okay. This is working really well for me, and I'm able to live my best life. How did you then start working with people on how to coach them through that? Well, what's interesting? It was kind of harmony us because when I first started my coaching practice with which was well over ten years ago. Now, I went to coaching school in the mid two thousand so it's it's been a minute, and I originally was all things relationships. So it was generally how to make marriage work. What was my kind of Nisha at the time and what I was noticing in my work as I was focusing primarily on relationships, though. A lot of women were lacking in the belief. In who they were a lot around this self worse Pierce, a lot around at forgiving themselves or forgiving. Other people letting go blame so that they could find a more strong footing in their relationship. And so instead of really focusing on this symptom of a need to get through to my spouse, or need to fix my communication. I kinda went back to the basics. We started unearthing a lot of this stuff around self worth. So then in twenty fifteen I went through total rebrand, and I kinda started looking at this, and then building on a lot of the things that I was working through in my own life. I kind of went oh here's this is my sweet spot. It is not just finding your voice, but also how to use it how to broach boundaries saying no in having this demand ticks in the actual scripts, the it kind of happened as a gradual evolution, I would say, and I ended up going back and looking through. True path client notes in, you know what are the things that you most want to get out of things in that was really helpful to me in figuring out. Okay. Here's my pen is on a genius. Yeah. That's awesome. And then where where did the name the joy junkie come from? Oh will that was one hundred percent like a business decision? My. Well, yes. Okay. Swell one was, I realized that in, I'm sure you can definitely attest to this with disordered eating, and things like that, that we are all addicted to something, it might be our smartphone. It might be counting calories. God forbid, it might be all of these various things I thought will what would shift for us, if we were equally as addicted to joy as we are to all these other vices that aren't actually bringing us any fulfillment or happiness. But another piece of it was going through trademark processes and things like that. I knew that very realistically. I would change my niche. So if I got involved in health coaching, let's say or if I got involved in physical, fitness, or became an accountant, I could still have joy junkie accounting. So part of it was was very much a business move. But then also talking about the outcome. You know what are we actually striving for when we want the perfect Creole when we want the perfect body, when we went the perfect business were actually just striving for an emotion. We think we're gonna feel we think it's going to bring freedom happiness fulfillment. So I thought why not really talk about the end result that we're all really looking for. Yeah. So talk about that. What are the biggest things that are standing in the way of people actually finding that joy? Oh my gosh. I would say, probably at least from my vantage, point, it is a heavy investment in what everybody else thinks it's that everybody else it, even a noble distraction like your child. Everybody else is once opinions in needs just are more important than mine, period. And that's how many women a disproportionately are raised to believe that self sacrifices noble in, in one of the things that I say, all the time is constantly, putting everybody in front of yourself is poison disguised as nobility, we think that it's so valiant and what it is is. It's martyrdom. And were not better. Parents were not better. Entrepreneurs were not better activists or artists were not better anything if we're depleted. But we're wired that way ends..

Hello, internet, and welcome back to episode seventy seven of the real talk with Dana podcast today. We have Caitlyn Higgins from nerdy nutritionist on the show. She is a new licensed nutritionist just finished grad school got her degrees, now she's a real person and all the things. Who is talking about her health journey with mysterious symptoms food, sensitivities intestinal permeability and how she figured out what the heck was going on with her body. We're also talking about her experience of disordered eating from starting with stuff like skipping meals and school binging, and purging, two more exit behaviors of doing multiple whole thirties in a row combined with sugar detox is an obsessing over steps on her Fitbit, and how she started to get out of those things were also talking about finding the middle ground during this podcast. So this is the kind of elusive no-man's land that exists for many people who are dealing with on the one hand, chronic health conditions that may necessitate a therapeutic diet or some kind of food restriction to prevent flare ups or some serious symptoms with autoimmune disease. So Caitlin has both Hashi motives, and ESPN Affleck is off Justice, which we're going to explain in the podcast. But at the same time these people. All also have a history of chronic dieting, maybe over exercising, or therapeutic behaviors all the way to disordered eating or eating disorders. This then becomes really tricky because not only is the complete trial and error process and a really hard space to get to this, like, elusive freedom or neutrality, or whatever you wanna call it, but it's going to look, so different for every single person depending on their background specific health issues or autoimmune conditions, the severity of your symptoms, etc. Right. And so that's one thing to keep in mind with these episode is I'm trying to have more people on the podcasts that fit this Bill of having deal dealt with both of these things. And now we're all trying to find what does this middle ground? Look like for different people. So no matter what Caitlyn or we talked about this with page when she was on the podcast to no matter what is working for them. Sure. That might work for you, but it also might look completely different. So I don't want you to take what any one person says, not only on this podcast on any other. Podcast or any other person that has this kind of experience just because that is the exact thing that's working for them, even if they do have a very similar background to you of say they have Hashi motos, and they also have this background of chronic dieting, or eating disorders, of where wherever it is, even though you have Mace, have some commonality with the symptoms that you're experiencing from the auto immune disease, or whatever it is. That doesn't mean that your general food guidelines are going to look the same even with those similarities in your health condition so little offhand topic there. But then with Caitlin stories specifically throw another massive debilitating wrench into the equation. If you have ever experienced some kind of trauma for Caitlin it was not only the stress of moving to a foreign country completely away from home and some bad breakup, but also losing her only sibling to opioid overdose. So we're chatting about how all of these things impacted her recovery. And also the most helpful resources that she used to help get through these tough times. Welcome to the podcast. So for people who have not met you before. Please introduce yourself a little bit. So you are a functional nutritionist and Rakia healer, I tell you not yourself and what that means. So I'm Caitlyn. Agains also known as be nerdy nutritionist. I recently earned my master's degree and functional nutrition from h like you and I just got my license son and my CNS. So I did. All those things and are real person. I am. Yes. Now, I can think all things. And then I also my first or my second year at age, I did level one Ricky healing. So I became certified as Ricky healer. And so what that means again. So Rakyat essentially, it was to healing practice that originated in Japan in the early nineteen hundreds and Ray means universal life force in key means essence of individual conflict Chee in acupuncture, in so what it is. It's just like noninvasive light touch on lake on the body. Obviously, you're closed in everything, and it can be for people or animals. And so it's essentially like jump starts a person's own energy like he'll link or healing system, through it aims to detect and correct any kind of energy imbalances in the mind, body and spirit. How'd you get into that Hamal? I've always sleek, not always, but like when I started really getting into light Neutra. Shannon, and like more of a holistic lifestyle I learned about Rakia few years prior to starting school. And I was so fascinated by that. And also in a lot of different spiritual healing methods in general. I was just very my mind. I was pretty lake open minded to all these different things when I heard about it a night heard that there were some people locally, who taught classes I was like I jumped on that now was like I gotta do this. And I also was looking for ways to heal myself because really raking first and foremost, his like for yourself end. That's what we were taught is to do your self Frankie practice every single day to kind of in it really made a difference in my life, cool. Awesome. Yes. So backtracking a little bit. Like, why, why did you get so interested in nutrition to the point where you will, like, yeah, this is what I wanna do like I want to become a practitioner. So it kind of took a while to get there. But so in two thousand twelve hundred thirteen I was teaching English in South Korea and. And I was either I was like at a kind of the road, I was like, I'm gonna either resign in stay here another year or I'm going to go back to the states in go get my master's degree. And I knew that I was really into. Honestly, I didn't know that. I wanted to do nutrition. But I knew that I wanted my master's in. I was like, I'm interested in food, and all this stuff, and I was looking into I'm like I just chose it. I'm going to do that. But then when I moved back to the states, I moved to Houston thinking, I was gonna do like your traditional nutritionist degree type thing. I looked it up. I didn't it didn't resonate with me like the traditional like my plate, the food pyramid. And he the live at milk and all that stuff. So I was like I can't do this. So I've been searched for schools that were more integrative in had like the same kind of mindset that I did. And from there, a just like I started kind of digging into the research in trying to heal myself, I had some kind. Kind of I developed food sensitivities in allergies, when I was about twenty years old. So it's fan. Almost a tenure journey for me to try to figure out, I guess what foods work for me and to find that food freedom, kind of thing. And so I guess that that's just kind of wet started at all was, you know, trying to heal myself looking into getting really into blogs, and, you know, Instagram and all that stuff in it, sorta falling people and I was like, oh my God. This is so pool and we can talk about it later but I was doing like the whole thirty end twenty one day sugar detox in weren't we all yet we were. But then when I when I found results for me, as far as I kind of heal myself I wasn't feeling sick all the time. I was eating really well whole foods. Yes. I did lose weight. But it wasn't like dramatic at first I felt really good about myself. And I was like I believe that I can help other people do the same thing and my biggest passion kind of above all, this working with, like adults is working with children in educating them, like working in the lunchroom's and changing the lunchroom food and stuff like that. So I'm just really passionate on that side. Yeah. Yes. So what we're the kinds of symptoms that you were experiencing that then, once you went down this rabbit hole, like research in blogs, and everything you're like, oh, these might be food sensitivities, but what was coming up for you before you figured out that, that's what it was severe physically. I was me and my girlfriend at the time we were in college, you know, we were going on all the time and eating out and drinking and all. All that stuff. And you know, I had that typical college diet lifestyle cereal op cards Rama noodles writing theory the air. Yes. Of course. And then I started every time we would go out to eat, or I would eat something I literally felt nauseous, like I might cheek started to flush. I started getting like lightheaded dizzy, and my like I was start celebrating and I needed to go throw up immediately and it was with everything, though, I mean, anything that, especially, you know, anything with cream or dairy all the bread things wine all the things it just like made me feel really bad in. So I was like, I don't know what's wrong with me. Like I couldn't keep anything down inside, eventually went to the doctor and get tested and they came back with itchy ease. So people don't know. That's like your true allergy. I was alerted to everything I felt like it was allergic to life. You know, Brad milk dairy eggs, beef pork all the all the things. But then looking back now. And with. I have that would just show that I have severe in impermeability in, you know, had some gut issues for sure. Yeah. Yes. Always going to ask, like, we know that as practitioners, but many people don't realize that when you get one of those tests back in it shows that you have a ton of food sensitivities it doesn't mean that you're actually allergic to all those foods. It just means that will one you're sensitive to them right now, but most likely because you have some leaky gutter intestinal permeability going on. And then the answer to that problem of having all these food sensitivities that are causing the symptoms is okay, let's, he'll up the gut, and then you will should be able to eat these things at least in some kind of moderation again, but then it's also backing up from that even more in saying, okay? Well, what caused the gut inflammation league he got in the first place. So were you able to figure out what that was, I would looking back up? Lutely, it was just from a very young age. I you know, my family did the best they could. But we ate vary. You know boxed every. Saying, you know, really poor quality food your hamburger helper. You know talking Denner kits. So I ate really poorly. I also used food as comfort..

"Welcome back to the real talk with Dana podcast where we talk all things nutrition health, fitness and mindset with a healthy side of sarcasm. So I have a bonus episode for you today because I was feeling really inspired yesterday when I was talking to and ranting with one of my friends about this topic. And I was like, hey, I turn it into an Instagram post in you guys really seem to like it. Why don't I turn it into a podcast too? So I was chatting, okay, honestly, ranting with Laura from the sausage Titian who I Pat on the podcast before. And we decided that we all need to start talking about diets like drug commercials. You know, the ones that sound great that promised to fix all of your problems until you get to the terrifying list of potential side effects that are listed in extremely fast foist over fashion. This is actually a running joke in my family because anytime one of those commercials comes on I have been known to do my own voiceover of. Oh, here's all the problems that we've promised you to fix, but actually the drugs going to make them worse. At could result in even worsening symptoms at death. And this is not to say that medications are not helpful and that we shouldn't have medications, and obviously you need to list all the potential side effects for these medications because companies have been sued over this. But here's the thing because have you ever actually listened to those prescription drug commercials. Because like I said, they promise you one thing to aid whatever symptom, you're experiencing, but then in the side effects part, which they tried to read over super fast. You don't actually hear or pay attention to them. Have you noticed that some of the side effects actually include a worsening of the very symptoms that you're taking the drug four and some side effects that are even worse than the initial symptoms. And the reason that you wanted to seek out this drug in the first place. So this is where the connection with diets comes in because while many people go on diets for weight loss, you're actually getting way more than that. And depending on which one you pick and how long you do it for the way. More part is not. Really a positive thing. And we're so we're talking about the type in dosage if you will. And there's a reason that going back to the drug companies they say that you should ask your doctor. If this drug is right for you. There's a reason why you shouldn't just jump on any elimination diet or fad diet, or whatever it is. Because what about your unique health history, your family history or genetics food allergies or sensitivities bloodwork everything that makes you an unique little snowflake in this world. Why do think there are million and one diets and diet books out there because depending on the person something different will work for everyone? Which is also exactly why you should run in the other direction like the night. King is coming for you. If you have any practitioner influence or so called nutrition expert that says this is the one and only diet or extra exercise plan or supplement for anyone and everyone will guaranteed it's going to fix all of your cages trust me it. Well, you only have to spend hundreds of dollars on my program to get the results. You have to believe me. Have you seen all my before? And after transfer. Mation Tuesday pictures. I swear it's the best thing ever. That's my first of my mini rents for today. And so I thought it would be fun to give you guys might own version of a diet slash drug commercial, and this can be any fill in the latest fad diet commercial. This is obviously completely exaggerated and sensationalized because Hello, it's me. But you get the idea, and it is way more fun. I have to say doing this on a podcast and on Instagram because I actually get to do the fun drug commercial voices. All right. So here we go and feel free to make fun of me afterwards for whatever voice. I choose to use. Because I don't really know what's going to come out right now. So are you ready for quick fix weight loss to get rid of all of your inflammation and stress and body fat and food sensitivities and live your happiest life, ever talk to your doctor who most likely has very Niddle nutrition training to see if this diet is right for you side effects may include also interlude here. I was totally thinking of reading these in voiceover voice similar to the drug commercials as fast as humanly possible. But then you probably would have missed half of this information. So if you want maybe listened once at regular speed, and then go back and listen on like double or triple the speed, and you'll get the idea also disclaimer here, this does not include specific therapeutic diets that are done for legitimate, medical reasons, like the Keita genyk diet for autism or epilepsy. Which is initially what it was created for. Okay. Disclaimers over let's do this side effects of dieting may include initial weight loss with a side of being totally metabolic screwed and a completely destroyed relationship with food in your body, which by the way, who knows how long it's going to take you to fix because this diet or doing any other diet. Sure as hell is not gonna fix it. So good luck there because we just screwed you up. Sorry, sucker, we got your money. And we're going to continue playing off your insecurity saying that it's your own damn fault that you failed and not the diets vaults. Spoiler alert. It really is our fault the dice fault. But we're not going to tell you that. No. Oh, okay. More side effects, insulin resistance when going to low carb for too long. Wait, isn't this? The opposite of what you were going for with low carb. Ha got you again digestive distress when existing higher fat foods do going low fat for too long even more digest distressed from eating too much protein and even more digestive distress from taking to many supplements or weight loss pills. Basically all of the digestive issues for you to look forward to then inevitable. Wait rebound from too much, caloric restriction. Or yo yo dieting also yo don't yo yo dieting can be assigned effect. And you feel like you can never get out of this cycle disordered eating potentially leading to eating disorders and feeling the need to control your food at all times feeling completely out of control around food while still trying to control it inability to savor the pleasures of eating not knowing what to eat. If you can't log it in my fitness, pal. Not knowing what hunger really feels like anymore body Dismore via which is always fun low to no energy severe nutrient and mineral deficiencies and malnutrition and symptoms resulting from these being hungry. All. The time constantly thinking about food, and when you can eat next what you can eat next. And how many grams of everything is in the food. You can eat next fix Asian on forbidden foods, or no foods that you keep telling yourself, you shouldn't eat leading to food obsession and guilt anytime, you do eat them also known as getting caught in the shame spiral losing all of your friends because you keep bringing your scale to weddings and events. This is a great one from Laura losing all of your friends because you won't stop talking about your diet or your new exercise fad like you're trying to sell them a crop used car fearing social events because of the foods that will be available having about whether or not you will eat those foods, and then more anxiety about what people will think of you. If you eat those foods loss of your menstrual cycle or irregular menstrual cycles decline in thyroid and adrenal hormones and many other health issues which also plays into metabolic, adaptation, and adaptive Thermo Genesis hair thinning and loss. Cold hands and feet inability to regulate your body temperature. Oh, and don't forget an eventual decrease in performance in strength because you're under eating. Also, realizing that you're not actually happy or more confident despite the initial weight loss because you realize that losing the weight wouldn't fix all of your problems as you hoped. It would. Oh, and it's not a diet. It's a lifestyle. So what you're really saying is I'm going to be experiencing all of these side effects for life. Great can't wait. So that's the end of my diet commercial. "Your support. Network to fall back on. Yeah. Exactly gone. It's like, oh my God. I can't imagine why I love going to the gym by I can't imagine, you know, taking six months off from working out at all because I've been athlete my whole life. So which it that's something that that I think would really I would really struggle with you might not even need to do that. Right. It might just be scaling back. The number of times, you go and also scaling back the intensity when you go or maybe for a little while like just doing one or two Crawford workout too week and then doing like to barbell days, and then the other days you like find a yoga studio or something 'cause the one the one stake. I did make is when I stopped going to the gym for like that period of six months. I was the same thing. I'd been an athlete my entire life from what I was like six all the way up until that point Alek twenty five I guess it was and it got to the point. We're like all of my friends had been at the gym. And I felt like really lonely because I wasn't going. So I would avoid that if you can. Then you're on social media. And you see everybody down like, oh my gosh. Social media gamble that actually done in a poverty me this fall because I was like really sick with the flu or something for like two weeks. So I could not go to the gym. And then the joke the day that I got back in the gym. I dropped a dumbbell on my hand. And my finger split open. I had to get stitches. So obviously couldn't do anything because I had I couldn't use my hand for the first week. I couldn't even get my heart rate up because the stitches would a burst open, and then the second week I could barely touch anything with that finger. So that it was like a whole month of not really being able to do anything in the gym. And I was like legit depressed. Yeah. I can't even imagine. I mean, even whenever Iowa's dealing with the injury while I was marathon training. I was so hard headed I trained through it. But like looking back. I'm like, wow. I should've just taken that time to just chill out. I'll read a book 'cause I don't think I would have gotten a journal fatigue. Honestly, it just a life.
