"Come on. Come on, bro. But I love you all in good fun. And sometimes, most of the time, 90% of the time it's in good fun, but you do have some people who just take it a little too serious and with him, he was probably just trying to get a laugh. And I kind of just, that's really my comeback. Usually all the time and when walking down the street or whatever, obviously, like good ones, you know? Because it was just so unoriginal. We heard it for 6 years. I've heard. So I kind of just forgot where I was for a second, and when I heard it, I kind of just turned and just said it real fast. And I was walking off the fragile, man. What did I just do? Care for my wife here from the falcons. I screwed up. Not at all. The exact opposite. So in the minute I have left here, last one for you. That belt, you checked that, right? You can't take that through as a carry on, right? The belt? Actually, we actually drove this year. Last year, falcons flew me out and I was part of the inner circle. Okay. This year I wasn't, I just went on my own Don and we went and they actually texted me and asked me if I could do the pick. Okay. So we did drive. And while I was there on Friday night, I received the checks from them and asked they asked me if I would be willing to do it. And I was like, absolutely. But usually I'll do my belts. I'll do it in a carry on, so it doesn't get messed up. Okay. A big fan of the belt and he just said, you know, you ever seen my setup. All right, Vinny, I appreciate the time. Call back. Let's make this a regular. Keep calling. I appreciate you guys. Thank you. Be well, brother. Love it. You keep that in your bag and you put it through the x-ray, you're definitely getting flagged. You're definitely going to have to get what's going on over here. You love Lala canton Vanderpump rules. Now get to know her on give them Lala. With her assistant Jess. What you did not see is when Raquel arrives and she wants to talk to me. I made her sit in a corner. Explain a corner booth all by herself in the dark. Waiting for to talk to you. Waiting for me to finish dancing to 50 cent. It's my birthday. Sit in the corner. Give them Lala wherever you listen.

"Can find out what kind of an SOB you really are. Hey, coach. Yeah, I don't know. Hey, by the way, at the workout today, do you see anybody that tell us give us the social calendar? Who is hanging around a pro day? Come out with their panda. Right. I saw Burton burns who used to coach. Sure. There were a lot of ex Alabama players there and Paul just real pleasure to see how those guys are for goodness sakes. Was that some of the names that have some of the old players that came by, but it was quite impressive. Seeing these guys worked out, my gosh, athletes unbelievable. Eddie is a pleasure to be there. I'm really glad you met. We are going to talk to you soon. Eddie Conor is one of our favorite people in the world. We're heading to a break right now. More of your phone calls right after this. You were listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. Welcome back here on a Thursday afternoon. Susie is up next. Hello, Susie. Hi, Paul. How are you today? We are doing great. Thank you. Well, first, is it Clyde and Texas that's a Tennessee fan? Yeah, that sounds right. Okay. Because I met last week he mentioned he wished to hear for some Tennessee fans. Well, I'm calling because we got our big game tonight and certainly I'm decked out in my colors and was 7 today so pretty exciting pride and everybody else that's rooting for big orange tonight. I'm excited to watch and play and ask the square gardens pretty cool. Yeah, that is really we talked a lot about Tennessee early in the show with John Feinstein. He did this big story on Rick Barnes, which was quite interesting because Barnes does not come off as a real dynamic personality, even though he's a very good coach and John really showed a different side of him that a lot of us had not seen. Well, I have to catch that one because I was 7 and so and then I was driving and I'm out at the park walking my dog and then my car now, but I'll go back to the idea. And by the way, Susie, it involves a dog. It's a dog story. That's why it was so cool. And the story is, for those who didn't see the beginning of the show, John called Rick Barnes, he got back early in the morning, he went to church. He had the day off since Tennessee wasn't even sure who they were going to play yet. And he wanted to watch the game. And he and his wife had been married 47 years. They found a stray dog who was in bad shape. They went to three different animal clinics. Finally found the veterinarian who would treat a dog. There was a chip in the dog, so there were able to find the owner and the dog is doing great. Thanks to Rick Barnes. Oh my God, it'll be cheers in my eyes. I can tell you that, but I'm definitely going to watch the beginning of show when I get home. And see that. And wish our boys well, I'm sure your routine. You bet. Tonight? Yeah, well thanks, and then after that, John Feinstein slammed Brandon Miller. So he gave away all the goodwill that he had. Catherine is up next. Hello, Catherine. Hi, Paul. Nice to talk to you. Thank you. Listen, I'm just wondering with the inception now of this NIL. If we can say maybe that's a factor with the increase in incidence that these young men are encountering. I mean, they've got more money to purchase things that they weren't able to purchase before. Vehicles that can go really fast and other types of things, I'm just wondering if you what you might think. Yeah, I'm not really thought about that possibility, but they've always been able to get things, but now they can get things not only legitimately, but. I am not a sociologist, so I'll refrain from getting too deep into the culture, but it is something worth studying. I will grant you that. Okay, well, anyway, it's just something that I was thinking about because, you know, they weren't able to do a lot of things before and now they are. I think Catherine. I think we've always seen athletes getting in trouble, but some of it has to do with youth, but the trouble we have seen some really bad cases lately. And I think it's worth exploring. Thanks for the call. We're heading to a break. We're halfway home on a Thursday afternoon. You were listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast.

"Is that what's going on there, Paul? Listen, I don't follow Twitter that closely. And not only do I not know that Trey, I think you know what my next line is going to be. I understand. Paul I'm feeling blessed today. I had a great check up with a pulmonary doctor in the cardiologist today. I don't have to go back for another 6 months. Well, that's fantastic. Congratulations. And we're all very happy to hear that. Yeah, Paul and I'll be sounded more like himself yesterday. I don't wish him continued priors because I miss all of you when he would call in. So continued prayers for August. But Paul, that guy finds turn. And then I want to talk to you about the bracket. He made a comment, and I want you to correct me if I'm wrong that Alabama said they didn't punish him because he didn't commit a crime. I don't think I ever remember hearing that coming from anybody from Alabama. And matter of fact, I think they said they didn't punish him because they didn't feel like he did anything wrong. And that's two different incidents. Don't you think, Paul? Yeah, and I think in the end, there was no reason nothing I've heard from Nate oats indicated that they were upset what brandy Miller did or didn't do because in their estimation, he didn't do anything. Exactly. Now, the rules committee for your bracket, Paul. I think we need some change some rules for next year. And I want to throw these out there. I think each one of your bracket should have a play in match. And that play again, Matt should consist of so you get 8 more callers. The new callers. I appreciate you. We struggled to come up with this bracket and last year we had, I think, 16. Is that right? And by the way, I'm fully aware that the callers take the bracket very seriously. Our entire goal with this bracket is just to have fun with it. And I know that everybody is following the direction of that as we can tell from the last couple of calls. We are heading to a break. We have sweet 16 games tonight, a couple of important ones. We'll talk a little bit more about that later on. More of your phone calls, a couple more guests. We're pretty busy and often rolling here on a Thursday afternoon. You were listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. My dad is getting out of prison after 17 years. Now streaming.

"And I think again, I just go back to show me the problem when all you guys are doing is bringing in more and more and more money. And speaking of that, what did he tell you about Notre-Dame and the conference of future? Because they were at the Vanguard of that and they seem pretty happy being an independent. He said there were four ways that could happen that he would join a conference. One is papal intervention, which is a good line. So unless the Pope says you're joining the conference, maybe that's what the FCC or Big Ten should try to work that route. Other than that, he says, it's pretty basic. They need to have access to the championship. They need a path to win a national championship. If you have a path to win a national championship, you can recruit at a high level. And that is true for both Notre-Dame football as it has been in the past and with the playoff coming to say Gonzaga basketball, which is in a small mid major conference, but because they can get in the NCAA each year and compete for a title, they routinely have lottery picks and things like that. You can recruit if you have that. You just need a path to the national title. Other than that, they need to be able to schedule games. He said, I've never called a school and not had them say yes, we'd like to play you. Obviously when Notre-Dame comes to town, love them or hate them or because you either love them or hate them, the biggest ticket in years and then start their media revenue has to be at least in striking distance of the SEC and Big Ten. And I think they're pretty confident in South Bend that NBC will provide that in their next television revenue deal. So I don't think see them going anywhere until they absolutely have to. Dan, back to another point that he alluded to and everybody does and I know there's a house meet house committee coming up here soon. And I'm not saying any of that really matters, but it seems like it's just now standard fare for administrators to lean on Congress when we all know the obvious when you deal with Congress. So in relation to NIL transfer portal and all the issues that bug coaches to death is anything or if anything isn't going to change what could change. I don't know. I mean, I think you could have a uniform law. One thing that's Congress could do that, I guess it makes some sense that every state has the same law, but these laws are really not causing any trouble. We're not seeing like schools in this state being completely hamstrung by a law. First off, no one is prosecuting the law. And I would love to see say the attorney general of, say, Florida all of a sudden decide we're going to charge four to state for some health violation or something. Not a politically expedient way to do things. Our prudent way to do things. So I guess you could do that. But again, everything else is sort of where they have a hard time coming up with a problem other than we don't like it. We like doing it this way, but we don't like doing this. As a coach inconvenienced, do they have to work harder and different ways? You listen to some of the basketball coaches with transfers or been so much and obviously the NCAA has done something and said, hey, can I transfer once now without a penalty? I mean, that is an NCA created problem, not a federally needed mandate or something. But you see these go out. It's hard. I don't know my roster until August. Well, that's very inconvenient for you doing your job. I get that, but you're also paid millions of dollars to do it. Lots of things change in the world. I college football and basketball coaches get upset because they can't do the same job that was done at the same way in 1973 or something. And nobody does their job the same way. Things change in the world and just because you have to do your job a little differently doesn't mean you just throw up your hands and tell everybody's doomed and I'm going to walk away from this and I'm not doing this anymore. I need Congress to save us and make sure we can still do the same way we did a ten years 20, 30, 40 years ago because this is the way we like it. These athletes have incredible Mark. I'm a free market guy. I'm a deregulated guy and there's a lot of people like that and they say, why do we have to have all these rules? Why do we have to control the market if these kids are worth more? Let them be worth more. No innocent people did not die because blessed young was in a Dr Pepper commercial or Jayden Rashad was offered a bunch of money that didn't pan out. Like nothing really bad happened, it's just that's how life works. Dan Russell always fantastic conversation this time in particular. Dan, thank you very much. We head to the break. "Back as we continue, we'll get to your phone calls at 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5 on a Thursday afternoon. We begin in Tennessee, Peggy is first up. Hey Peggy. Oh my goodness. I'm just really trying to catch my breath. I swear. Well, thank you. Figure out that go about the guy had the theory about how this was really true. Somehow that he would take in the power for Palmer. And he said he had, you know, I just don't know and bewildered. I really, it's kind of space. Actually. Yeah, Peggy. Just offer you an opinion. I don't think he has proof. I think that is a supposition or a rumor that he picked up at a at a bar on a lonely Monday night. Thanks for the call. Do appreciate it. Will, as in North Carolina, you're on the air. Hello, will. I've been trying to avoid this topic, but I want to add my two students work on the old Brandon Miller. I've been hoping to ask you this question, but I ain't. If NATO would have done what he should have done, it's suspended Brandon and waited for this bond here in everything to clear up and try to bring him back. Do you think he could have rung him back? Yeah, I think NATO's going to suspended him the first week just to make sure that they had all the information and then brought him back and I don't think anything would have been made up made out of it. The fact that it looked like either a cover up or something else, I'm saying looked like is really what I think is brought to brought the hammer down on NATO to the criticism is endless. It was even there was even an article today by Dan wetzel in Yahoo calling out the president at the university of Alabama for his lack of action. I mean, it's a big story nationally. And I realized we have talked about it here for a week and a half and people are tired of it, but it's still out there. Yeah, I didn't want to bring it up. My gut feeling is the brain trust probably thought that they couldn't ever gotten back if they suspended or something. Well, it's the new era where the athlete has been empowered and yeah, again, I think blame goes NATO says does not make that decision. He's not the arbiter of that. That's an ultimately the athletic director. And the president of the university who make that call and it's pretty obvious that they were concerned. They didn't want to upset Brandon Miller and they didn't want to, they also did not want to impugn him if he had not done anything wrong. It's pretty obvious they don't think he did anything wrong. Let's check out Paul in Selma, Alabama. Hello, Paul. Hey, mister time bomb. Something that you don't get very often is a phone call that short, sweet and to the point. Well, thank you. I want to say, if they're going to shorten the football games, they need to lower the prices of the tickets. Because I'm an avid football fan, as well as an avid basketball fan, but primarily football. And I wish that would make them longer to be honest with you because I can sit and watch football game. I don't care who it is. I can watch it all day long, especially though Alabama auburn in those. But again, I don't want them to shorten the football games. I would like to see a loan. I mean, Paul, the acts like they're shortening the games to improve player health, which I'm not sure I really believe. I think they're, I think it's a gimmick. I don't think that 8 minutes is going to change anything. What bothers me and I hate to get off on officiating. But I just feel like the officials in any sport, right now we're in the basketball season, you just can't take that long. You have to make a decision, take a quick look at it. Try to be sure and then move on. I mean, this over over and over again, these officials looking at the same thing. And then still not. And then the wasted time that they have to talk to the coaches talk to everyone else. That to me is the biggest problem in all in all sports, let alone football. I hate to see a mess and with the time and I just, I understand. I mean, that's a very purest approach. Thanks for the call. Do you appreciate and you were in and out quickly. Michael is in Birmingham. Michael, go right ahead. I heard the end of that call. Rick is in Houston, Rick, you're on the air. Good afternoon, Paul. How are you today? We are doing well. Thank you. Appreciate the call. Oh, I wanted to talk to you about the looks like the real possibility of fiscal Pete's record getting broken tonight by the young man Antoine Davis from Detroit mercy. Right. What's your thoughts on that? Well, I really, I must confess, I haven't thought about it. I mean, I'm aware of it. But to me, what pistol P did will never be done away with even if this guy breaks the record and I don't know enough about his league, but I daresay the competition that he's facing every night is far inferior to what Pete maverick was facing in the SEC. I'd agree totally on that. I guess I don't really have a problem. I mean, I always felt like growing up that Roger Maris having an asterisk for a good bit next to his record was kind of a slight this young man, however, those play, he's in his 5th year playing basketball because of the COVID, COVID year, plus playing with the three point line. No, I'm glad you mentioned that. I've seen pistol play with a two point line and by the way, I mean, records, I mean, there are, I mean, you could do a whole show on what are the greatest records. I don't remember marriage is attack on Ruth, although I've read books about it. I do remember bonds and so. And I think the marriage to the same age, like you read books about it. But I think based on what I've read, the Marisa, that was one of the greatest stories ever because it really wasn't on TV and you had to listen to the radio or read about it. And I mean, there are very, to me this record, I don't know this guy up there and I really don't I'm not trying to try to act like I care because I really don't. It's a meaningless record. What records really matter? I think is the question that you have to ask. I think the home run record was a big deal. Obviously, I thought Hank Aaron's deal was, I mean, I remember every minute of that because it was so interesting to follow, but most of these records, I mean, like the other night with LeBron and Wilt Chamberlain, okay, nice, not Wilt Chamberlain, but Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Nice moment. But didn't mean, just think about this.

"Fine bomb show best of podcast. Welcome back. I've heard a couple of people mention this, the fact that talking about Brandon Miller bringing the gun, it was I realized this is confusing here, but miles texted Miller asking to bring the gun. The gun belonged to miles. And apparently what Miller did was he drove the car back, and then the gun was in the car. I realized that may not matter to some people, but that is the chain of command that occurred, according to the police detective. Jim is up next in Tuscaloosa. Really interesting. Is it not follow? In other words, does that mean that soon and conclude from what you assume that that means it was not Miller's gun? No, it was not Miller's gun. I believe the gun was registered to Darius miles. That quite a bit changes the complex the picture of this situation. In my mind, does it not? Well, I think it does. Again, I am not proficient with Alabama law on the gun possession, but he was I mean, I don't know. I mean, the bottom line is. It was Miller, I mean, Jim, I think everyone knows that extremely bad judgment was used, but there's a difference between bad judgment and being an accessory and murder. Well, I think that even more so kind of clear. Then clear, Miller, I don't know, I don't know how to say this. I would not conclude that Miller doing what his friend teammate wanting to bring his own brings the gun of the friend to him and perhaps Miller was, I mean, I can't believe Miller would do that if he thought he would have been the murder. I mean, you have to ask a couple of things is one 30 at night. Miller had already been to the club. If you and I are out on the strip and you leave and I text you and say, bring my gun, you're not thinking you're probably bringing it so I can go to the range at one 30 in the morning and work on my marksmanship. There has to be a reason for it. I'm just saying no Paul that perhaps he was as his friend teammate miles or whatever his name is asking to bring the gun. Again, I don't know anything. I think there's a lot we don't know. I mean, I think that's. Let me just make this point. Let me make this point, if you will. Please. The point I'm making is the point I'm making is simply that I'm not sure what I would do myself in that situation with my teammate friend perhaps in trouble. Or whatever. And he says, hey, man, please bring my gun to me and there was nothing more than that. I don't think that Lillard would have I can't believe Miller would have brought the gun to and knowing he was going to wind up murdering some girl innocent girl. Now I want to say this, Paul, I really mean, I get hot about some things. And I'm hot. I'm hot about that dome call. Look, she's got no business saying he ought to be it's none of your damn business down what he should be doing. You need to let this play out. I think the same thing goes for Dan wetzel and everybody else is trying to make whatever they're making out of this. They're trying to make. It's not a good scene, no doubt. The picture doesn't look good, but they need to let it play out before judging. These people are judging and I promise you this down, you judge, you will be judged. According to how you judge, that's God saying that not me. That's the way I feel about Paul. Demi, you tell me what you think about why you said. Well, I'm very troubled. I think there has been a feeding frenzy in the media. Thank you for saying that. I appreciate you saying that. And I think that's what happens in a story like this. However, I thought wetzel was calmer than most. I mean, I don't know how much you've consumed. I know, but that's not the point. The point is he was out of line. And here's the thing, I want to say this and you know this. We've been through this many years. There's tons of bomber haters, period, not just football, basketball, baseball. Everything's about Alabama. I think Ohio call a while ago that you had the pin up and exposed what an idiot he was making his claims and then same time it goes for that down person from New Orleans where Louisiana not Alabama. She's a hater. I don't know about it. Hey, I'm not gonna judge her, but she was walking out of to suffer. I'm talking about the team. The team doesn't need to settle for this, and I mean, to me, Jim comes down to the question of judgment, should he be on the should he be on the team? Should he have paid a price? That's where this is. Can you make that judge? Can you make that judgment? Not with the information I have right now. Amen, exactly. Thank you, Paul. I'm just going to, you know, I'm a little bit of a lawyer myself, and I think I know what's going on. I mean, I know how to get to the point of things. You know that. And you do too. And I think together, what we've done some things together. And I hope we've done something profitable and beneficial in my phone call to you because you've made some comments that I think people need to hear. What would you what would help you make? What is missing here is my question back to you. What would you like to know? Nothing. Oh, I'd just like to see it play out. And honesty, that's all. No cover ups, but I've got no other questions. That part of this concerns me though, because what part? I would like to know what the university knew and when did they know it? Well, sure. And hopefully that will come out if we can give it time. By the way, it will come out. But it's not going to come out in time for this basketball season. Well, I know this and you know this. There's been cover ups all over America Napa. That's what we I mean, all parts of America is a cover up. It's a mass cover up it's horrible. What can we do? Except play it change things. But that's what we're living in a time like it. You know that, am I right or wrong? You know that. Well, of course. You are correct. What can you do? Except, play about these situations. That's all I know to do. I have no answers. It's a troubled time, Paul. It's a troubled time. Period. Overall, not just for this, everything in America is troubled. I only troubled and in bad jeopardy. Well, that's not true. I think we are at a very, but again, we're talking about a big conversation and then a smaller one here in regard to Alabama basketball, which seems pretty trite compared to everything. Well, you know what I know that there's a lot of Obama haters and I just think that I can ask you this. Whether people hate them or not has nothing to do with the judgment used. I don't think that I don't think anybody has at this point has a right to do any judging. Other than I will disagree with you on that. I think we have every right to ask questions. I didn't say that, though. Asking judge ask questions is not judging the situation. I mean, without you making a some of these people are making personal judgments like there's a judge and jury and you know when I know you're innocent, everybody's innocent in this country until proven guilty.

"And of course the player here? I mean, look, right or wrong fair or not, if Alabama is in a final four, it is the story. I mean, just is. Unless there is more explanation that we don't have. It is the story. You have basically a guy who could easily be named national player of the year. For a team that easily could win the national not easily, but would not be a shock to win a national title. The best player in the country on the best team in the country and a team that doesn't always never won it. It's a great story. There's no hiding there. So the longer you go, it becomes, it becomes the deal. And just one more point, like with all those gunshots fired out in a crowded bar area of a school, we had an emotional situation last night at Michigan state one week after innocent kids were shot there and it's a different type of school shooting, but as terrible as this tragedy was, it could have been more widespread. And you just have somebody who was admitted to the police, he was drunk and doesn't remember everything, just firing bullets around the strip. Everybody involved here is very lucky that the tragedy was limited to what it was. And I'm not trying to take anything from that, but it could have been more widespread. And so this is just a very, very serious situation. And I hope that it's viewed that way, I hope it's viewed that way. And I just I'm really looking for more answers in the next few hours. Dan, thank you, as always, a very thoughtful sobering comment, not reactionary, not, hey, look at me, put the camera on me. Thank you, Dan. Wetzel, one of the best in the country. And he's right. When you think about how bad this was and listen, nobody needs to explain. We all know what we're talking about here. If these shots had started going sideways and it escalated, it could have been a mass event. It's already pretty terrible to say the least. Let's take a break, more to come. Your reaction to this, plenty of guests, as I mentioned, we will head to Columbia, South Carolina, or Alabama, is right now, taking on South Carolina and 9 o'clock tonight. We'll be right back. You were listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Geico asks how would you love a chance to save some money on car insurance?

"You're welcome man, on middle of the week, a lot to do here today, and we begin with where we left off yesterday, the swirling controversy in Tuscaloosa, where quite a bit has happened since we last left you Nate oats, the head coach at Alabama the number two team in the country has clarified his statements from yesterday's news conference if you have not seen or heard this is what he said. I thought it was important for me to clarify the unfortunate remarks I made earlier this entire time I've tried to be thoughtful in my words relative to this tragic incident and my statements came across poorly. We were informed by law enforcement of other student athletes being in the vicinity and law enforcement has repeatedly told us that no other student athletes were suspects. They were witnesses only our understanding is that they have all been fully truthful and cooperative in no way did I intend to downplay the seriousness of the situation or the tragedy of that night, my prayers continue to go out to Jamaica Harris's family. Meanwhile, not everyone buying what coach oats is selling Dan wetzel headline here in Yahoo, Alabama's Brandon Miller could have stopped a tragedy, Dan wetzel, one of the most respected award winning columnists in the country, joining us Dan. Thanks for the time, always good to have you even though this is a rather incredible event to be talking about. Good afternoon and give us your thoughts on what we have learned over these past 24 hours from Tuscaloosa. Yes, thanks, Paul. Yeah, the clarification is interesting. When I first heard those NATO comments, I was really stunned at them. And I was waiting for more information. And my guess, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm just not going to assume that NATO is the worst person or it doesn't care or is callous, right? Am I assumption was that he didn't maybe he wasn't fully aware of Brandon Miller's involvement. Maybe he thought I knew there was a guy in the vicinity. And that's the wrong place at the wrong time kind of quote that he had given. But he didn't know, hey, he had driven back with the weapon in his car or he had been summoned there or this all the other stuff the police allege. So that the clarification still leaves that open, but I'm still surprised he didn't come out and say that. I'm still surprised like, did he know everything that was testified by the detective yesterday? And did he still know all that and say, yes, this kid doesn't deserve any punishment. There's no suspension. There's no problems. It's no big deal. It's just an unfortunate situation. And that's the part that I'm still not clear on. And maybe we'll get that clarification tonight because to me it's a big distinction between those things. This was a tragedy that bringing someone a weapon in the middle of a dispute. You know they were at a bar, you know, this could have been a worse tragedy. Is bad enough to horrible enough for the family, but at least 11 shots rang out and the strip and Tuscaloosa, which I think you and everybody certainly in Alabama knows is very popular area. With college kids and bars and diners and everything else, like who knows who else could have been caught in the crossfire. We've had enough shootings and stuff. I still just a little puzzled by what exactly NATO's new when he made those statements yesterday or made the decision that, hey, no big deal, Brandon didn't do anything unless he's charged with a felony or something here. We don't really care because that's the question I have and it's unanswered. Yes. Dan, I can't answer it, I can tell you what I think, though, and what I think is that he knew everything yesterday and he's known it for some time. I think he is much has said that. He's noted for almost 5 weeks. And I think it raises a lot of serious questions. Not so much from a legal standpoint. I think that's a big hill to climb, and I know a lot of people, colleagues of ours are groveling, the players should be indicted, oats should be put out to pasture. I mean, those are strong comments to make, but the question I really want to ask you, assuming that I'm going to ask you to assume something because I'm assuming that NATO's knew all this 5 weeks ago, what should he have done? If he knew that his player not only was involved in the transportation of the gun to a murder scene, but it's possible that the car that he brought back there was blocking the possible escape of the other party involved. Yeah, absolutely. And that's exactly what the police have testified allegedly that and I understand that it's a thin little street. It's a side street next to the I think the CVS and the involvement of Brandon Miller is far more. His windshield was hit twice. With bullets. And the shooting was far more dramatic. And I agree with you. Look, I'm not a prosecutor. I'm not going to second guess the prosecutors of up in Tuscaloosa or anywhere else. That's their decision. They have very, very hard jobs. To do. So whether somebody thinks, hey, they should throw the book at this guy. I don't know. It's hard.

I did a book of columns about twenty five years ago and then i did another one about twenty years ago but and then i did this book a couple of years ago about my first year at at. Espn but i really i. I swore. I would never do another book but i sure yeah i if this if this career suddenly goes down in flames and and i may have to dig in but i. I think you're right. It would be very interesting to a fresh perspective on sabin and and bryant I feel like i have Having covered the coach bryan. And obviously all nick sabin. But here's my second question. What's going to happen with the new team playoff when a nine three kicks. Am all florida. Get cnn over. An eleven in one central forward or houston memphis. Or someone like that. And i'll hang up and listen. Thank you for all you do gary i. I can't reach and everything. I can't tell you what you call it. Just i never thought. I would be delighted that somebody remembered my the first half of my career. I that's the thing that may surprise me. The most about the playoff is that they did not come up with a. What's called an eight q an automatic qualifier. because i do think they. There will be a lot of screaming but something tells me that if we see another scenario like ucf a couple years ago or or coastal or cincinnati. They will get in I mean i'm not. I don't think the committee will be mandated. But but i think they're going to be Cognizant of the politics of the moment. Hey thank you for the call. "With the post errol's was a visit to coach. Bryant's great you remember riding those article. Yeah and it's being elmwood. The other day i thought about that because we we're bill was buried was not far from coach bryan and i decided to do this and i ended up doing it a couple times in the first time i did it. It was very controversial because a lot of people thought it was. Blasphemous is the right word but in bad taste to go out and talk to someone who had died but it turned out to be one of these. I would do it a couple of times. It and i'll tell you a quick story. I went out there I think mike dubose was the coach. And i did. I mentioned how. I was in talking to coach bryan. That he had given up on do bows and had become a steve spurrier fan and had a and i got a call one morning from spurrier. Who sperry was a veracious newspaper reader and he was just howling about the article. About how i. I said coach bryan and i think speed steve may have been low law goal. But you think he's really a big fan i other than the fact that he was. He's been dead for twenty five years coach. i'm sure he was but it was really a lot of different things in the newspaper business. But but but i think i was the first one to ever go out and talk to To coach bryan. Well here's my first question. What would you say to coach barn now about the alabama football program. Well i'll tell you what that would be. Maybe the most interesting. It's one thing to go out there. And talk to paul ryan about and i ran this by his grandson one time. He told me that he found fairly humorous as well. So i felt better once. The family gave me the permission. But i think he would be intrigued by nick sabin I think he would be nick. Savings biggest fan because coach. Brian is you know was someone who admired and i think he would have looked at what saving is doing as as simply Spectacular and. i think that it would have been a tough question. Be out there asking coach. Brian okay coach here. Here's the exit questionnaire who's better you or coach bryan. You're coach saving. I may have to do. I'm africa have to come back for one more column. I can find somebody to publish that you know. I wish she would write a book.

"The university came out with a report last month but is somewhat vague in there were very anonymous players saying. I told how well three of them came forward to players. And and both steps on matt and they all said you know directly told us what he often. He protected dr anderson and Unbelievably disturbing stuff and unbel- almost impossible to fathom how. And why especially. I think from a perspective of twenty twenty one looking back And it's really hard. To hear the name sham boeckler and think of sham boeckler and again and one of the most iconic figures in college football history and sullivan. Speeches the team the team the team the the battles with where you haze way the intensity just hard to look at any of that in the same way. I would suspect at as this goes forward. You know they're they're sham. Boeckler hall is where the michigan football building is You know that name will change. Or the st. The statue will come down. Because i i just don't know how you'd want to be associated with this It's it's you can read more about it so there's a radio show. I don't wanna get too into the details but it's it's incredibly disturbing incredibly disappointing When something like that happens and you know i think about you look paternal. It'll show Sam boeckler you look at a lot of these different cases and you just wonder how those guys were from an era where there's a whole bunch of coaches that ruled with iron fists and anything happened and you just wonder this probably happened at other schools. Like the wouldn't make sense that it only happened once and then it turns out it didn't and it wouldn't make sense at all. It happened twice. There's levels of abuse by you know. I'm not sure we're not gonna look back on all of that era and different manner as we get older and we you know we have time passes that people kind of look. You know what what happened to me at this university even with this legendary person wasn't right then we'll toll on The beker allegations as well as the. Cfe dan thanks for making time. "Recruiting pool. That are willing to play for notre dame. It'd be good as long as brian. Kelly there that they could be in the playoff most years so they basically are saying. We're giving up the chance at that by every few years to get in. Let's say five years we get a by but now we're going to get in three or five years I think that's a deal. They're willing to make. And i think they look at the home gate of that. First round a good thing. It's a huge money maker and You know if you know. I think the home dates will be. Thanks so i don't think notre dame really got swindled on. That's what they had to give up yet this. I thought that was a pretty decent. The alfie notre dame's giant Conference anytime stoop dan. What's from yahoo. Dan hancock earlier. Today on the show said this. The championship games are going to be more consequential. And that's one that a lot of people are scratching their heads. Because if you have to top four teams playing for the big ten or the sec. Or whatever yes. The winner gets an advantage but the losers still getting in the playoffs. So can you addressed app part. I know you heard that yesterday. Yeah i i've been saying for years that they should They should go. They should eliminate the conference championships altogether. they should eliminate divisions that she'd go back. They're just running conferences. And have your cat and you're gonna have a twelve team playoff. Find a way to determine who. Your champion is without playing a conference championship game. Conference games are ridiculous in a competitive sense because they're basically geography based So if you're in a certain part of your you know you're in the sec. West and the ester c. e. is loaded or vice versa usually You get the big ten west. You just get seated in. It makes no sense. 'cause they always are talking about well. Every game must matter and everything must be competition and then they create these incredibly on justified ways to set up a copper shipment based on geography which has just. There's no point you know no points for geography of football game. So i would get rid of these things altogether now understandably people make money off it. They're gonna get rid of I don't think more consequential. I think don't continue to have problems. But if you really look at convert ship.

"It. Hello welcome to the weekend. Big huge weekend for college baseball one win already in the book. To just literally ended moments. Ago in nashville. Where the commodores or now one game away from the college world series but as it was yesterday today. The conversation here is all about the cfp and the twelfth team playoff. Let's talk about it. S i dot com with a positive headline. You don't see this or often. A refreshing change college. Football looks to be getting playoff expansion right. Meanwhile college football playoff expansion may may just mean more for the sec. And the tie that is a see-saw hurts column in tuscaloosa. So what would it mean if this had been in existence for a couple of years. How would the The sec fared twenty fourteen. How about this. Mississippi state and ole miss would have been the playoff. We're talking to you. Hugh freeze and dan mullen. Dan mullen you finally made the playoffs. Two thousand fifteen and two thousand sixteen. It was all about obama. We know georgia alabama made it. But so we'd gus malzahn. I wonder if he would still be at auburn. Had he been a playoff contestant in twenty seventeen in eighteen florida would've made it again. Dan on you know how to play off bids had always you're on. You have to shoot me. Dan's got another one dan. Dan's like the sabre of the playoffs. Look at that in two thousand twenty alabama. Florida and georgia. Even jimbo matt from san antonio has to be happy is team finally got in the playoffs conley so not. Everyone liked it. We thought it was pretty cool but leave it to barrett. Salida be killjoy. Sadly rights him propose college. Football expansion puts the emphasis on access over. Excellence bah humbug. Back to The the congress two. Us senators criticized proposed college. Football playoff expansion cash. Grab that will hurt players. Considering there's a former sec. Coach in the senate. And i don't believe he's one of those senators quoted. Should we really care. Meanwhile nick sabin has won yet. Another award this from the national coalition of minority. Football coaches the willie jeffries trailblazer award and that is well deserved. So what are we going to do here today. How about our first guest. We are fired up to listen to bill hancock. He's the cfp executive director. Dan wetzel joins us in about an hour. He wrote a book about fifteen years ago. Called death to the bcs like he's got a chance to write one again mcelroy on the cfp in the college. It's one of those things where we're certainly all four this. We think that our student athletes need to have this opportunity as as a normal student would as any of us would But yes there are some concerns. And i think for us we want to monitor it. We want wanna put those those procedures in place and make sure that you know. We're doing the right things there. But you know paul. I think the thing that we're going to learn is that this is going to change. You know things are gonna evolve. We're going to have to make sure we're we're working in real time. And in his things change we're going to have to change with those things. We talked a lot about the michael mccann Law school professor from new england appeared in front of the senate committee and then he joined us the next day.

"We ever has ever played around and Tim Wills his way to win, and so that's going to be enough. Then? Yeah, I think he's in for a rude awakening. I don't think Over admires that naive, though, But if he is this is that that would be the warning sign here. Tim Tebow is not going to make that big of a difference on your team, even though he makes it. Um You know, it's there's there's it. Why's he signing opposed? Why is he really signing him? And what's the thought process behind it? He's not going to be even if you even if he can. Was phenomenal and makes the team and catches a couple passes and catches a couple touchdowns or something like that, right? Even if he becomes a viable, it's tight end. He's going to rock. He's not gonna be a game changer in any way. So it's really not a huge, you know, if you Hey, I got caught up. 27 passes and two TDs. I don't want 15 football team. You would know who he is. It's not a It's not. He's not going to change the fortunes of Jackson's up, so it's It's kind of like what what urban really thinking. But I'll give him this. He's he. He hasn't signed them yet, which is kind of interesting through the trial balloon out there. I think he wants to see what's going on. Um, if you ever pulled the rug out on people at this point, I'd be kinda Real rough. Um, but supposed to be a guy? I don't know. We're gonna see it. I'll say that's man. Jacksonville's interesting. No. I just didn't think you'd be talking. Ah, a lot of Jacksonville Jaguars in the middle of May. Normally, but there's certainly interesting that we'll see what Tebow can do. I mean, I have no problem with signing. What the heck one of 90 guys. If if they signed him, he didn't get a con. You gotta you gotta camp invite. Why not? He's a very unique athlete, but anything other than that, I don't know. Dan Wetzel joints on the hotline. Let's switch gears here to the NC, double A and again it's another week in the new cycle another week where their leadership gets absolutely hammered so bizarre because For years. It's all it's always been about making money. But then again, you could make the argument Mark Emmert has left a ton of money on the table, so it's kind of unclear times what he's done. Really Well, now there's discussion Maura and more discussion about name and likeness and how these players are gonna be compensated. What is the latest with this? Because I've heard so much And you know you have federal government potentially intervening. You have state Government already doing that around the country where we now, Dan Wow, This is the This is the problem with this. Some states have enacted this name, image and likeness, saying it's against the law to prohibit someone from doing that. So at that point, the N C A would be Violating a state law. That if they try to stop, you know whoever from from making a couple bucks on instagram really like that. But could a federal you know, Federal law was would would supersede that, But they've got to get a federal law. Don Is a lot of confusion. The schools want to risk it. They're still members of the N C. A. A So it's like, even though we can do something, should we? There's so much My issue with Emmert and not just not just him. But all of these commissioners. A lot of these really prominent AIDS and presidents for the last And at least 10 years when this became really obvious it was coming. Really since the O'Bannon lawsuit that really put this to the forefront and people were going to make this money and economy change, and you saw the ability of of athletes to mark it on a personal level Social media It's so obvious this was coming at some point. And why couldn't they have tried to All the problem themselves come up with their own rules. At any point during this thing instead of standing around the very end going. What are we gonna do now? I don't care what business you own. You don't want the government. You don't want politicians in different states, saying this is how you have to run your business. Nobody wants that. It's terrible business, so you avoid that you work out this is going to be our plan will work something out with the union or some kind of rep. Whatever we do it on a bunch of politicians doing because That doesn't make any sense. They're not. They're not in our business. In all of college sports has done is stand there and do nothing until now, their force basically by the state of California, and now all these other states to do this, and it's a total mess, and that's the lack of leadership. I don't really care what they come up with. They needed to come up with something over these last 5 to 10 years when this became obvious that it was coming, and they weren't gonna be able to slow this trade out because it's here. You can't just keep sitting there going. I don't like it. Tough break. That's that's how it works. Now we have a potential chaos in college athletics because there's this zero leadership from these commissioners. And the president and anyone else. The incident. I'm just amazed it. It seems like every day a new player is deciding to skip college basketball, and they're going into the G league or they're trying to figure out. You know another way to circumvent what happens. You know, not everybody could be Zion Williamson. And play a certain amount of games and be rewarded because of it because of a shoe deal or whatever. And then in college football While you don't see players skipping college football, you are seeing players skip more and more games at the end of the year. Some players deciding to opt out. And I'm just curious what both of those sports and those of the big revenue producers what those look like five years from now and even 10 years from now. I mean, this is our name. Evans would like this could play a big role in now because you could make a lot of money..

"dan wetzel" Discussed on KNBR The Sports Leader

"Google home Smart speaker play can be our Paul Historic tape. Oh, here's Lady Gaga doing are failing it. What a great version. She's just knocking it out right now that that Italian that Italian girl she can sing, she can really sing spectacular. Very, very good. Every I'm taping it, So I watched it a little bit later on too. But everybody Hey, yeah, it was like, Listen, I don't want the politics and I want the gaga. I want to know who Where the hell did Sean Watson's going there? Come on His Tom Brady. The greatest is get Tom Brady gonna knock off Aaron Rodgers. All this stuff we could talk about with our next guest. The veteran columnist from Yahoo Sports. Dan Wetzel's always one of the best and Dan Welcome back to the Murph in Mac, Show. Brian Murphy Paul McAffrey out here in San Francisco on the Yuma guest line. How you doing this morning, Dan? Morning, them. I am doing great. How are you guys doing? Good man. We're juggling little images from D C with a little a little sports chit chat, my friend. That's what we're doing, sir. Pardon? Pardon today for anything. You didn't make the cut? No. But the loom we're talking about a little Wayne Pardon could resonate here in The Bay Area because Kyle Shanahan is a known little Wayne head. He's really big, big fan. So it's good for all involved to Joyce Day at the Shanahan household there, so let's start with this Sunday. Here we go, man. Tom Brady and you wrote the column. And you wrote about the break up. You know, everybody's got an opinion. I'd love to hear yours on, you know. Did Brady win the break up? Was it him all along, not politic. Well, um now he won that he's won the breakup so far. You know, I think The column kind of makes fun of the whole concept of like it was one or the other, like Bill Belichick was just riding the Cape. Riding the coat strings of Bill of Tom Brady or vice versa. Brady had a much easier task this year, which was too and select a extremely talented yet underachieving cause of Jamis Winston drawing. Record. 30 something that interceptions Um And so it's like, you know, it's like the there's a There's a divorce. And, you know, one of them moves into us, you know, cool downtown loft. The other one's left with the aging family home. That is incredible. It s so you know what? Come on thing. One looking 1.1 party is looking a lot better than others. But we will see It also look making the trip each of game that's kind of the Mendoza lied for Brady Belichick of what was a successful season, but clearly, um, in terms of this year. Yeah, absolutely. Tom Brady. Whatever lingering doubts were out there and they were, so there's always gonna be a hater of these things. Someone saying, Wow, you know he got he had Bella Chapman If he hadn't have Bella Jack, how great of a quarterback would be big, you know? A 13. This team's 13 5. Now they're in the championship game that hadn't wanted hadn't been in the playoffs in 2007. There are vastly underachieving. Is it because he's the best quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Better pure quarterback and a lot of other guys are better. Perricone about what does Brady brain Where wherever he goes, he wins whenever he's playing, he went and and that That's the case. So I think this is a great uh, you know, whatever, bit of validation or whatever. Whatever last argument come, Brady might have need it. But this season provides an awful lot of it because he's had so much success right away. Bella, check. You need talent. I don't care what coach you are. One of the good quarterback, you know, really went in the NFL. And so we'll see what Bella check still does. But Look out, Bella. Just some 500 without Tom Brady. Many, and you know that Z. He's now coached, Uh, eight seasons without Tom Brady, and he has some good quarterbacks test over T through blood cells. Some other guys. Um, he shot five other Cam Newton on this issue was okay, but a shell of themselves, So I like it solved anything, but I think it's certainly a bit that says, if you're Tom Brady like I could win without him, even at age 43. It. Zafon is hella fun attack to talk about And it's the ultimate, you know, bar room so we will listen. We had you know Bill Walsh and Joe Montana here and we, you know, kind of it wasn't really it wasn't really either or we kind of there was never really a pitted against deal, but that's because, you know Did. Walsh was not coaching the Niners when when Montana left, So that's a huge difference. And in the numbers are fun to go through. As you point out, Brady a much better record, you know, then balletic without him, and you know that But that line you got me there was. I love that Mendoza line. That that making the conference championship is the Mendoza line for these guys. That's what the that's the baseline they're starting with. In these you wrote in your column, your win in Wisconsin and then call me because if he does lose the game I mean Brady sees this season is a failure, right? I mean, I would imagine he does, and And if you're a Brady, if you're a person, I don't know if there's a crazy person. Maybe somebody who's talking to you right now who still believe Joe Montana's better than Tom Brady? You say? Yeah, he didn't win a Super Bowl. So you know, blah, la dee da, All right. Yeah. I mean, I think in for e. I don't know what Brady thinks of is a successful getting here or not, I think in New England obviously. The stakes are so high they want so much. I mean, any 13 conference championship gauges is Brady's 14th. They made nine Super Bowls, You know, obviously win six, and it just got to a point once they once they got into that second stage, you know, they choose different stretches of winning three Super Bowls. Appearing in Amman Stop Um, where you knows Winner not and and anything less. You know, I'm not sure what he what he would look back and think I think making this game certainly when he's when he does retire, and he's in his sixties or something. Look back and say This is a kind approval. We proved a lot But this would certainly be a big step. I mean, he goes back to another Super Bowl Super Bowls player. It's pretty amazing, but the idea that anyone would be able to hold and say, Look, you didn't win a Super Bowl in Tampa..

"Doctor really assert that approximately one third of all big 10 athletes who have tested positive for covert 19 have myocarditis, potentially damaging or even deadly inflammation of the muscles around the heart. And his conclusion. Not exactly that very conclusion went viral Thursday after a story printed some off the doctor's comments this week. Now somewhere, and I'm reading verbatim from Dan Wetzel Sporting Dan Wetzel's article. He does a great job, Yahoo sports, he said Somewhere in the translation between zoom meeting and social media. Ah, lot of nuance and perspective was lost, and the doctor's comments had become a political football to be batted around. And that's exactly where we're at right now. Absolutely, positively is, the doctor explained, You could have quote you could have a very high level athlete who's got a very superior vo two max and cardiac output who gets infected with covert And he could drop his or her vo two max and cardio cardiac output just by 10%. And that could make them go from elite toe average status. We don't know yet. And I think that there's a
