"And back in the eighties and when Dan ward became police commissioner I I recall one of the the shootings that took place was a mistake on the bumpers was shot by officers right bill and and as a result you know it I think commissioner ward was was very clear and and disturbed by the fact that that that police officers should not be responding to two calls for emotionally disturbed individuals in it was is is is sense that we're not equipped with that we are police officers were trained to do other things but one of them is is not we're not equipped to handle those types of situations that was is is is is thought at the time and I was charged with but might be attached to look at what some options might be and and and and and backpack at the time suggested that I get together with the commission award and commissioner bill grant who was then the head of our human resources administration and to think about together how we might come back to him with the solution with the solution we actually we agreed upon was to maybe have a cold response in that core response would be with a person a social worker and then police officers responding together perhaps that those that that was the sort of the beginning of that conversation as a as a possible solution it never it never happened because as a practical matter because the budgetary reasons and you know that that logistics of having people working at the time to be as resilient and took them all to be able to respond together on those calls right now I think you have you know any any a hundred fifty five thousand calls like that a year or more and so it makes it that much more difficult well that's true now so we do have the response that we that we are engaged in with with respect to homelessness and and that's that's presented that's that's proven to be effective but it is still it's very limited and and how it and how to curse I think the general thoughts now are you know where the police should be involved in that at all as you as you indicated and it may be that that we shouldn't be but but it's difficult to see how we wouldn't be because when things happen on the street as a practical matter in people's homes people medical nine one one and and and and police will respond it's sometimes it's unclear that it is a in the most star person or at that moment and so yeah I it is it is it worth examining and looking at how that might work I suppose it is but but it's a it's a it's a challenge but it's certainly something that that has merit for a new look at taking a look at proposed reforms are around issues of transparency policy changes community relationship building training can you speak to the issue of transparency when it comes to police misconduct you know that fifty eight was repealed can you speak to the issue of transparency for well transparency I think it's always important if folks ought to be able to know what's happening we in the agency as over the past several years we try to be more transparent with respect to our disciplinary system we we overhaul that discourages them to try and build equity or equity into it and too well on both sides I mean as we try to rebuild trust with the citizens we need to also build trust with our offices and and so part of that is there our changes with the system work to increase penalties in some cases but to adjudicate the cases quickly and and sometimes offices were or you know might have been complained about over in and the process was not quick it was slower than it should be and and distant took much too long depending on the nature of of of the conduct that was being looked at that has improved significantly for the most part but we still are not is as doing it as well as we as we could but that that's that's changing and it's changed significantly I think over the over the last several years commission yeah did you did prosperity yeah no I just say that that that up but the notion of transparency more recently rejected a I guess about three years ago more in the in the notion that that fifty eight became an issue as we are it was discovered that we had personnel records that we were publishing in internal use only but then what what was given at the press of people in the in in our building in the in the what we call the shack but had access to that information but it was you would get there and it wasn't being used in any case it raised the issue of fifty eight and and and and and and we were I realized that we should we shouldn't be making that available although it wasn't intentional and so fifty eight became it was back in the spotlight it was the thing about it is it was it was the statute it was a created to protect officers identity when it was created decades ago it's now been repealed but before it was revealed we even before it was repealed over the last year and a half or two we we were intent on problem publicizing discipline is as much as we possibly could to make it you public some idea of how how the disciplinary process and it.

"Was so I remember how I felt when I saw California chrome win the cow when the win the king glorious, and and the Calcutta Turbie I said, I don't give this a cow bread or not just look at the rate. As was runs the way. He does it, you know, and he was right on on right up there on on derby dozen. So I'm a figured they paid six hundred thousand foot of sorts Barrett. So, you know, the the horse impressed back then. So I I even from the I test just looking at him, and he's by El Prado mayor. So, you know, he certainly break to go on. So he could be any kind something at. Took a shot with into you know, gun metal grey. I put him in there because not so much for for racing the sham because I I'm not crazy about that final. I think the racial is a perfect set up for a minute came home in twenty seven in one. That's that's pretty that's pretty slick. Our no matter how you how you look at it. And it was said, and it was really it wasn't win Coliseum. Didn't run his race. At all really wasn't too much to be there. But I'm I went back to his second in the American Phero behind behind game-winner which I thought was good race. And again going back to the size. I mentioned before he's by exchange rate catering doesn't Sipe distance sources. No. But it's a strong female family. And he's got the right running style. So, and I know I know, you know, the barn has always been very high on ROY weight, and he finished ahead of him in the American Faeroe, and he didn't run badly into base juvenile. You know, he's way back early backed twelfth and finished, you know, pretty respectable sits in the race. And I think he's even though he think crawling sham. Really, you know. He he looked good. But Iraq number eleven. I'm not saying he's gonna win the Kentucky Derby, but I think he's done enough to merit being in the being in the top twelve. I won't argue row eight and by the way, I should mention I know is sideline for those. That are that heard that name and are wondering. Where where ROY waiting might be beside side being a prominent stop on the New Haven line. He's out till the middle of the year. It looks like. Yeah. Well, risk that much book to Dan ward us doing great. So. But you know, things happened overnight in this game. You never know. In Jerry Jarrett. The Halldor went when did you talk to toward about them? Let's week. Okay. Then maybe the maybe he's back faster than expected. Because I when when I asked Jerry that was before Christmas, though, I suppose so that the time. We've kept track. That's Michael Stinson, mcgreevy force and. They were very excited about but I- Jerry said before the end of the year that he was that he was going to have some time off. So all right. Good. So damn what days made great progress from two to three. And and they, you know, pretty high on them. So all right. I'll get an up I mentioned early and he brought him up interesting. Okay. Good. He when I was way to say that. So I don't know. I have no idea. I hope so I mean, I I'm because I you know, I thought that he'd had a couple of trip issues, and you know, had had. Yeah. I was there for the. I don't know. But you know, obviously, he's got kind of -bility. But you know, after the cop two, you know, the two Baffert awards, and I really don't know which I mean game winner is accomplished more than probable, but I got a sneaky suspicion that the. At the baffled bond might think that probably some more counted of to some visual standpoint stretch where he runs through the wire and gallops out. I mean, he could be it could be any kind. But you can't not you can't knock game winner..

"Probably going amount of the quarter together about it. Lusa quality was a sprinter miler at best. Now, it doesn't matter for by loose quality. So again, you know, we go back to we go back to the pedigree's is it's not like where gonna look for the hail to reason and fabulous. And and and the round tables, and you know, all the stamina Cise Dorsey got ability now in the entrances so much on speed and there's so many horses now. And so few words is pure stamina pedigree. They got stamina on one side day of speed on the other side. So the fact that when you have so many speed influence flu influence forces in Turkey, which is are that of a horse which feed in his pedigree is gonna win derby. And you saw like I sent you start looking at these horses lookout winning derby, the winning the derby, very close. I'm not saying waiting, right? A wire but gave winning it sitting right off the pace. Yeah. You gotta go back to you know, you look at like, or, you know, he's he's a anomaly now, you know, to come from far back during the derby. Yeah. He's the he's the really the end, you know, that that's become a bit of a an oddity. Well, but you mentioned you mentioned how. You know with Instagram? So you don't, you know, like, listen, if you know voyeur on basically, you think of Iran, you think of mile ace, let's think about according to mischief you certainly don't but eventually gene into mischief itch, but how good is it source. We don't always could could be a super freak. I mean, I mean horse stock career by winning. The first two starts ten ranks, you know, fans time to be any kind. I thought it was very very good move on their part under the owner's part. Tickets put him away for the year, very unorthodox move. But he, you know, you'll expression to fast to last you don't wanna horse come out and do this that that early because how do you keep them going as that brilliant early on a two year old year? We're going back in the summer. How do you keep a horse that brilliant going all the way following year? So I thought it was a good move. Bring him back freshman them up and grow into himself. Relax, maybe trying to taunt us some of that at speed. He's not gonna lose speak with it have it'd be Detroit and harness little bit. And we'll see what happens when he comes back. Spoke to Holland office assistant, Dan ward, he said, he's he's he's really matured from two to three grown into himself. What's what you wanna you wanna see, you know, in some people might question. My ranking of Galilea n- Akao bread. You know, we've been running basically the same stakes that California chrome bid a Golden State juvenile and glorious and the California beg races. But it's the way he did it you look at his races. He went to pink glorious by nine is last start live at the factions at race twenty hits fractions twenty three four twenty three to twenty three three twenty three four pose a mile and went thirty five flat. I don't that's against California Brits or not when you can Ratliff every single quarter and twenty three and change and not get tired to Spain to sustain the ten speed or distance of ground. You gotta be you. Gotta be impressed. With. So I mean, and the only time he got beat you got beat sanded, and the voice that beat him cruel intention was very, you know, highly touted Baffert horse who had won his own stock by five and a half links nine and three and gal and Galileo average, just barely got beat by sixteen links third.

"Blackhawks back on the penalty kill three quick ones here. Now. In the second period for Tampa Bay on the powerplay paves, the latest shorthanded restaurants, Saad through center ice over the lightning line down the right wing side. The iron that's posted two nights. For granted. Suck the other way. J T Miller hold the hawk line to the left circle. Seabrook caught him forced him back to the point. And then Miller gave it away and hit caves at the line bounces over in front of the benches tastes to get. It was pulled off the puck lightning. Get it. Back into the hawk zone at the left point hadn't hopes the puck to the left wing corner. Ends up behind the net to Miller took alarm beside the right circle to Miller right corner to Cologne inside the right circle. Again, the headline right point now to Putra hurling top of the right circle. Fires flocked. Here's an eastern carrying out of the hawk zone to center ice and he'll make the easy play. And that can the puck down in behind the lightning, and then chases headman and in nearly strip the puck away and did put it in front of the benches but had been got it back in the lightning bench. He slapped down the right? Boards and in behind the hawk net around to the near corner. Rueda put up behind the net Davidson drives around not out kept in by Yanni gore. Gore leaves it at the right point. And it's taken there by Brayden point grading point for the right wing corner. Feted out to the left point this topples over Tyler Johnson, stick and banks to center ice, forcing the whitening to regroup. Thirty five seconds on their power play Yanni Gordon to the hawk zone drops. It left point Johnson. Moves it for right point to point. You moves into the right circle. Score Yanni Gord taking a hand off that originated from behind the hawk net that from Andrei Polat shot it in behind Cam ward. It's a power play goal and the whitening extend their lead the three one of your given Tampa Bay. Too many opportunities on the man advantage sooner or later, it's gonna come back to haunt you. Averaging one for every four coming into this one one for three the official count in this one. If I'm reading this right now. And that's it's an amazing stat have been out shot. In this period of twenty five to three and we still have eight minutes to go will twenty four shots on goal in just over ten minutes. Dan ward has been under fire to say the least. This is Yanni gorge goal on the power play from Polat and point. Yanni Gordon who was leading the lightning goalscoring anyway or scoring anyway, I should say it's his fourth on the season. Third on the power play Tampa Bay one for three with the extra man Uekihara. You hit hard in the near corner. By Matthew Joseph got the puck. I had to pay the lightning wind down the right wing backhanded in front batted away. Now by Sara Lee. Out the Senate race in down to the hawk line. Here's your key. Hire you passing ahead over the center, ice circle. Mcdonagh grabs it for the lightning steps in the hawk line. Fires from the left circle turned wide by war. A follow up from ferrelli and war knocked down away. Caves takes a handoff up the left wing from debrincat to center ice crosses, the lightning line, high flock vetted over the left circle that was intended for us and ends up behind the net to Cahoon tried to give it to debrincat became entangled with mcdonagh next to the lightning and went down. No penalty is called the puck is now down in the near corner. Hawk zone. Duncan Keith got it there passing to Seabrook, right wing boards. The key factors center ice over the lightning. Blue line dropped passing ISA mop wasn't expecting Chris rock took it away from a lightning quick pass Johnson over the hawk line down the right wing England with a backhand turned wide by Cam ward, who then lays down facts, the pads again and stops a follow up shooter. That was you're up then a shot from headman from the left corner. Deflects off of Johnson sticking wife, circuit chip takes the puck. Back at the right point hawk zone. The Johnson now right corner. Back to search of along the fire board met by his countrymen. Anisimov Seabrook takes actually schmaltz did try to clear it out this one pinballs out the center ice. Now. Headman Scott Hoch wine over the kucherov off the Polat over the hawk line on the right wing side. He put it out in front of the walkout. Here's coutrai. Big scrambling say by ward, the Rebound Ace cards spreading point standing next to the net flipping it into the top shelf after Seabrook and Cam ward did their level best to stop the first couple of volleys point came along and picked it up and backhanded at home for one Tampa Bay Tampa Bay's defense are stepping up in all areas of the ice. And the Blackhawks just aren't reading the players. They're cutting off the place before they happen. And the Blackhawks are getting caught and they're trying to scramble back and defend another one great example here is they had possession and they lost. It all of a sudden two or three opportunities Chambord has been spectacular. You've already gone up to no forty four shots on goal in this game. I don't even know if that's right. But has had a lot of opportunities. Forty four shots to go. And we still have six minutes to go here in the second period. I to one lightning, and if you're going to sit here and try and figure out if this is Cam Ward's thoughts, you better not because he is holding the Blackhawks in this game right now and they're down by three. There is no doubt about that. Pervading point. That's his fifth goal on the season. Takes over the lightning lead in that department. Four one talked about it that you didn't shore up some of the deficiencies and the problems that they had last night against Columbus. This is a different animal with the Tampa Bay team heaven the gaps and scoring and they they'd shoulder here. David camp deep in the lightning zone on the left wing corner. Fending off a check from Brayden point one way. Then the other than the other put the puck back to the left point intended for Saad whacked down ice by stamkos. However and yon Ruta racing back in behind the hawk net. Takes the puck moving up the right wing side advancing through center ice over the whitening line to the high slot. You let go a shot, but it was walked away to the right corner risk Kunitz there for the hawks will spin it back in behind over to the far corner. Stand post wax it out to the line kept in by Gusta sin and taken back in the lightning owned by the sit through the air, the hawks wind gusts of Senator put the puck to center ice front of the penalty boxes covert for the lightning will steer it down. Along the near boards, a shot it in front of the hawk net. Ward had to deflect it over to the far side. The puck is misplayed by Cedric Paquette and impact that got it back in the hawk zone. Top of the right circle. Fired a shot was blocked Martensson steamrolls. Mcdonagh with a big body. Check along the near glass hawk zone turnover. In the hawk end. Spins it over to Martin hit by Callahan, next to the lightning bent Martensson. Moves the puck down to the far corner in the hawk zone. Justice incentive behind the net. Over the Ruta. Moves it up the right side Martinson picked up by the lightning. They enter the hawk zone. A shot from the top of the right circle by Lorne that deflects wide Martensson runs into mcdonagh again. And again, they battle just outside the hawk blue line. Meantime, back up by syllable lightning zone firing from the top of the right circle. That's over the net. We get a whistle. Stopping player. We're going to get a couple more penalties. I believe they'll both go off Martensson and McDonough four eleven left in the second period. Four one lightning. This is Blackhawks hockey on seven twenty WGN here. He brings. A message from the king..

He didn't talk about it much, but if you ever sort of brought up the subject as long as he felt like you weren't second guessing him with that topic than he could get him to open up. It's not the he ever was dismissive of sort of advanced numbers are analysts, and he would tell you which ones he thought merited a conversation in which ones dismissed. I think he picked and choose he. He could pick and choose which ones he really felt were more indicative in some of them felt we know would indicate past performance, but maybe what predictive in. And then some of them he did like. So I think it is important in Susan's, not wrong. I think it is important that the next guy do that, but I don't think that necessarily means that banister didn't it. He certainly was more into it and I didn't cover the team when Ron Washington was the manager, but talking to some of the other beat writers and people that were around the team Bannister definitely paid more attention to analysts than washed it. Wash strength was that he would get the team to run through walls for they just the players loved Ron Washington. So so, yeah, I mean, I think ideally, you'll get somebody who's both somebody that really makes a good connection with the players in his able to speak the language of these younger guys. And I didn't use the phrase speak the language on purpose, but it kind of fits that. Like I think maybe a bilingual candidate would be a good fit with the clubhouse. There's a lot of Latin American guys in there, and then somebody who also understands the the advanced metrics in his able to take those numbers and apply them. And. Maybe it's maybe it's a manager bench coach combo that you get one guy that is sort of people person in. He listens really well to the other guy who's the numbers guy, and I do think will maybe start to see that and maybe have already begun to see that a little bit a trend where your bench coach becomes more important. He's not just the guy that's like making sure the that all the the little details are taken care of. But he's like in your year going, here's this matchup. Here's this number. Here's what I've gotten from the analytics department. So the I mean, it's funded that I just sort of said the football coach mentality wasn't working, but but maybe more like football coaches where you're gonna have your offense, coordinator defensive coordinator. I think he will have more guys in the dugout with a bigger voice than they would have. You know, ten fifteen years ago. Now I did ask about that a little bit as well because the before the Rangers hired Don Wakamatsu to be around, they hire Dan ward than to be around, of course, responsibilities more than just being around. They also had jobs enrolls in everything, but Wakamatsu of courses been a manager before bid, Amanda. Abed baseball team before I walked a lot. They were very bad. I was wondering in in your observation, we talked about Jeff Bannister..
