"So in retrospect got past and stuff it was great for five years and one and the altea started and that was exciting. But i was a fucking drunk drugged up. Anxious angry mess. Hey we're wondering maybe but those gatekeepers man. That's what that louis guy like the waiting for you. It's that god complex. Sounds what's great about this. You know for sure. There's a freedom to a and you know. I definitely learned how to do it to learn how to i would. I learned how to be on the road in boston to in one night or so. My training was you. Know like sort of specific. It was shit gigs. Yeah a two man. Show half hour open forty-five closer and you have figured out. You gotta go up cold in place for tonight. Fight yeah l. e. But that made you see you on good shows where you're like fuck you guys. I'm like no they like you. This is the calhoun preemptively defensive. It was dan vitality to do this to open his show at the improv. Just get up there. And like yeah. I got a feeling that we're not gonna get along out of the gate. That's so perfect. Because we've all thought that. Yeah i mean i. Don't i appreciate your seeing what i saw when i started because it was sort of the end of that first generation of dinosaurs. You saw a lot of saddled guys at the old improv and a lot of the young guys coming up. And i saw guys in my generation who i love. Actually get funny. Yeah it's a weird thing the to like. Be starting out with somebody todd or jeff. Ross where it was like You you're not funny. You're funny but like someone like todd. Who's hilarious he. he didn't. We has the todd speed. Yeah so true. So like but his commitment to it was astounding. Because he wouldn't he couldn't change. Yeah he made it work right. It's almost like we're godsey. Exactly what she's guys. Get funny because they're not. There's no there's no default gear. Yes yes that's true and and it was. It was sort of amazing. i've deep kind of nostalgia and feelings about like a lot of the intel. Eight more was there. I'm mark cohen. Keith was there but like. I used to make tell. Leave the room when i got past it to sell i get it. I get i to go on stage. You know he does like a two man thing sometimes. So yeah and i do that all the time with all these comics. We have a blast with him. I just shut down. My brain goes blank. And he's like what's going on with you. I'm like yeah. I i was so emotional and weird in seller was always weird for me because i was sort of angry and it wasn't always intentional and s in manny would always come down like it when he was alive. You know you'd be onstage. He come and look around. I'll panicked like you. Are they laughing. Yeah oh my god. That's what scared about the club was there was money involved with a business. I like shit bar in the middle of nowhere where you know. The lights are barely on because he felt comfortable. That no stakes. Yeah you're letting me tell my dumb zingers onstage. Nobody should be paying for this. No but i mean you earn earn about like what the salaries and what gotham was and what you know the comic strip was and there's a need run around stand of new york was one. Yeah Boston comedy club. You know all those places you that was when you did that thing where you try to on a weekend night. You try to line up. Four to six spots elliot. And he'd do three different clubs and you're running around like fucking nuts. Yeah i miss that. I guess The journeyman it's all about the journey. Yeah man and they made it. You did it. I did all right. You know it wasn't all about standup. Oddly you know it was you know it was the podcast at the end of the line. There everything turned around and everything kind of came together. Yeah i was forty five but you almost. You're at the end. I gotta starbucks job. I wasn't a starbucks job. I didn't know what the fuck i would do. Yeah that's the only thing. I had to go back to you. I haven't had a day job since i worked in a restaurant hall. Man which is so funny. They were like could you imagine people doing never their whole life and we're like could you imagine like it's like no but i mean what what am i prepared to do outside of show business. Yeah nothing nothing never never set out to write for other people. I never sat out to be a show runner. I'm not a tv right him. stand up. yeah so it's not like can be like i'm just going to get on a writing crew. I don't know how to do that. You know. I will. Now that i know what it is. You sit around in a room with ten other guys with free bagels pretty good and they get paid handsomely and might i add but yeah no. I know what you mean. But that's annoying when bill go. Oh you work an hour night. Oh must be. Oh you do for a living is like fuck you. I did twelve years of grinding and no vice our life yes we roll the dice with our future because most people are just sort of like what do i gotta do to get the security. I feel like i can deal with life. Go fuck that yeah. You're going to try this. I know choice right. I did a gotham asked me to do some kind of qa thing You're doing okay now. Talk to some young comics. Answer questions. I was like all right. Sure comedy so as five in the afternoon. Everybody's a suit. And i'm standing behind a desk on the stage and they go razor annika. Yeah what's because. How do i get an agent. I'm like well you gotta get good. I how do i get good. You gotta go up and do a bunch of mics. How long does that take. It's like well you're already out. You're done. I got two dogs. How do i make time to do comedy and have a job and work with my dogs and my gear out to what about the dog. You're fox but they don't they want this shortcut and they all hated me by the end of it. Yeah i i. I did that. That was asked to do When he's fucking. I'm sort of mad. I see it before like the one of these kind of podcast festivals which was put together by fucking hack radio consultants. Who were you know pushing this idea. That podcasting with some sort of entrepreneurial venture that anyone could do right and they had all these booze of people selling microphones podcast equipment. And all these fucking. You're sad people that thought this was going to be their big life changing Yeah keynote speaker. So i i did a few of these rows sort of like there's no guarantee i know this may no you can't fuck and like you know i. I'm lucky yeah my timing. Once in my life worked out. Yeah i had a certain skill set right but you. I don't know if any of you have that can't get into this thinking you're gonna make money out of your mind of course and so that. That was a short-lived sidebar career keynote speaker. That didn't i didn't last. They'll they'll find out soon enough but yeah that's weird people just think. Oh this is a this is an option. Well i just fucking eight but it's also speaks that we live in this world where it's like all of a sudden. Everyone thinks they can do this. Which is fucking annoying. Because if they do at once and they think they can do it. Yeah and then we got like what about. And i don't wanna be that guy. Can you do an hour and a half anywhere. And i can you do the job. Yes no..
Is Cam Newton Ready to be Patriots Quarterback?
"The biggest question of all and of course, I'm talking about Cam Newton Cam Newton ready to be the quarterback for this team or false pause, as of today. It's false and I wrote a column this weekend for Boston Sports Journal, that basically laid out and I'm talking to different people both around the team and also around the league about where Cam is and there's three things that need to go on Nick and it needs to go on now and it needs to go on every day off of the day until the season kicks off and number one. It's cam has to lose weight. He can't he can't play a 250 anymore. He's not a young buck. We saw dead. You know, I thought this but it was confirmed by a couple of NFL people that I I talked to and I trust they said that cams legs got heavier as the season went on and off and run as much he wasn't as a as Elusive and the big thing is not only that but your legs are everything when you throw the ball, if you don't have your legs which you did earlier in the season, they threw the ball a little bit better. If you don't have your legs then you have nothing as far as power and things like that and also just accuracy if you don't have your legs then you have to compensate upper body and things just get all out of whack and that's what happened. When cam last year. So in cam I will give him credit on the I am athlete podcast. He did say, I think he was trying to lose ten pounds. I'd go less. I think he needs to get to 3235. I think that gives them a better chance to be sustainable. He doesn't he doesn't need to be 2:50 to run over linebackers anymore. There aren't that many linebackers that are 2:50 a.m. Should be in a business and his age are going to be 32 a plow on those guys over. So there's that there is he has to get into he he has a he has to get with her own coach. I hope he's working with one but he better be working on one that works on his mechanics all the time every day. Get back to where he was at the beginning of last season get it out of her system because he needs to learn how to just be able to flick the ball. Ten yards instead of making a whole body convulsion just to get the ball out in the last thing is the biggest thing Nick and we've talked about it. I thought is he needs he needs Express 24-hour premium tutoring on the Patriots Playbook and what goes on as far as all right. If the defense does this then I can change to this and what's my audible what's my check because I know everybody's all excited about Johnny Smith and Hunter Henry and you know, we you can also factor in The athletic fullbacks that they've wanted to have for two years. Dan Vitality is coming back supposedly and also they dropped adult and Keen to play that position because there's a choice that they want to be more like the 49ers with use checked. And so it's all nice and dandy that they have two tight ends and athletic fullback and people are absolutely right to say that benefit of that is you get match up issues where all right, if it's safety then we're just going to run over them if their linebackers then we're just going to run past them. We're going to throw the ball. That is great and all but it doesn't mean Jack if you don't have a quarterback who can't see the defense see what's going on check to the right play and take advantage of the defense and last year cam wasn't even close to that. So unless all those things happen and he's not there at this point. He is not ready to be the starting quarterback for the for the Patriots. Do I think he can get there and be better? Yeah, but we'll have to see.

"Google search. I'm guessing I would assume so. I mean, I think it's one of the first pictures that pops up if you just search a Jayhawk high school also pretty sure when you just search high school football in general, that's like the first thought of that. I probably should be. I guess it's Ah, yeah, you know, back they will be trying to bull my neck, trying to pull my neck to have a bigger a bigger neck and traps. And then you just get giant shoulder pads with tiny little baby arms. And you look terrible. That's pretty much my high school life. Whole re. They're eight. Unfortunately, I think I was I was probably 14. I was probably going into my freshman year. I think what year in high school for you. Was it like Holy Hell. Look at that kid's chin. He's definitely going to the NFL. I don't think that ever happened in high school. I don't I think that only happened once Power. What's Pat came along? You started talking about my jaw. My chin. All of it. So on high school, I feel like I was awkward. You know you don't Ganguly, especially early on when you're like, 13 14 15 years old, your trying to grow into your body just all gangly and weird looking. Faces all awkward neck is tiny. Your head is big. It's just not a great time. I guess when it comes to your physical appearance when you're like, 13 through 16 I feel like we're growing kind of growing pains. Time. Yes, you mind last until 25. Not all of us are agent freaking Hawk. But okay, whatever man. Look, you look great. Now car. What's going Zito is anything we're gonna thing cleared up. He's still wearing several hats in the background. Oh, you I think you hear me. Yeah, Everything's good. Begin to show no one could hear you. That was so nobody could hear me. Yeah, but now we fixed that We're good. Oh, good. It was. It was not a good intro anyway, so it was pretty. It was pretty bad, but I see you run around the backyard, right? You okay, man, I'm doing it. I'm sweating. I'm losing some weight. That's good. Oh, gosh. Well, I know I mentioned we have Andrew brand Michael Lombardi coming on the show. But I mean, we have to start it right right off the top man. Five Patriots players often I think the biggest one that come my attentions. Dante. Hi. Fallon just recently has said that he is going to opt out of the season. He has a a two week old baby with this fiance right now. His quote was something saying, like we were worried about our our lives outside of football. More than where? What's going on on the field? Something like that. I think that's a huge deal. And I instantly thought of Connor back there and condoms. I'm wondering. Is this a good thing for you? Or a bad thing with all these guys opting out? Yes, you're you're losing some stud players they have to replace and already lost another. Stud players to free agency. But is it a good thing? Are you suspend zone for you? Because they're opening up cap space? Definitely the spin zone I'm going with, you know, Marcus Cannon, Big offensive lineman for us, him leaving spins on obviously Cam new and you know he could move around. But for me, the biggest worry is high towers of captain. Right. So for a team, like if you're on that team, and you see a captain, not play. Is that gonna trickle down to the rest of the team? You think her by this point have they already kind of known about this for a week in there? Just kind of now reporting it. I mean, I don't know. I wonder how much dialogue he has had back and forth with Bill Bella checking the rest of the team. I'm sure his teammates especially guys, he's really close with. I'm sure he's been texting with them throughout, Prime, like, Hey, man, what do you What do you think in what? What do you think going into this year? He's pride when they asked him, Dante, What do you think? I've been a couple of teammates were a little bit surprised me said, You know what? I'm not sure, man. Look, I got a little baby on the way, which the baby's two weeks old now this could go back months, maybe two or three months. He's been thinking about this. I'm guessing, but you're right with Captain thing. There's always Like the intangibles. And then that the tangibles you have high talent has all the tangibles. His big, strong fast. Violent is a solid tackler, especially the open field can cover. Anybody can put him on the line rush like an outside back or put him in the middle. He could do anything, but he has all the intangibles like you said. He's a captain. He's the leader of that defense. He calls the defense for that. And oh, by the way, you lost Calvin away and Jamie Collins and free agency as well. So you're replacing pretty much that whole linebacking corps Inter You're replacing the guy that that made it all happen. The guy that lined you up and got everyone situated, but I'm sure like anybody else You feel like okay? If anybody can handle it, don't you think the Bill Belichick led troops can handle this? Absolutely, without a question. I mean, I It's not as if I've wavered in any sense that the patients are still gonna win the Super Bowl this year, but on the opposite side, Dan vitality. Also fullback. We just got from the Packers. He also opted out. So my question for you A J. If you were on the Patriots, you know we don't have a fullback anymore. Linebacker fullback very similar position. Are you hopping over the other side of the ball made playing Both ways and sticking your face in a couple holes. I'm trying to do both. Yeah, I'm trying to play both ways. Who? What's Ah, Landon Robertson. He's the guy that went both ways last year. Yeah, We also lost him. Thank you for reminding me. How could you go to Miami, Right? I think so. A lot of those guys loved florist age. Yes. What's up? Do you think like like five Patriots players came out this morning. Then there's been others trickling from others team, but there's no there hasn't been like multiple for one team or another team yet..

They will parties I was not invited to. So. Completely obsessed and introverted and just. Uncomfortable no comfortable I didn't know I was missing out on anything really now I did not. I knew there was something going on underneath girls sweaters that was of course yeah, but next prime minister in and as part of the other social world event. It didn't appeal to me it. I didn't like the scapegoating the hostility. The elitism I knew I am not going to navigate any of this. I didn't like I didn't care for. It was very happy to just watch TV. Be Your own guy. In not getting. TV WATCH BATMAN But, but it's sort of interesting to me that given that true, and even when you started, and you saw that sort of tone catch like I I could see like a guy like you comes in your young guy. You're working really hard, and you got these guys that are boozing it up right fucking off over there, and even that life studio fifty four's happening has all that. Shit Yeah Yeah. Yeah, and you're just like I want to do this, but somehow or another at the strip. You're able to find an appreciate some Brotherhood eventually. Well, that's where it started or us. Because we were all new all together, we were all at the starting line together. Right naturally bond that it was being Larry. Miller all day every day. All night of George Wallace Mark Shift. All Riser Carolina for. Every day was Wolfsburg your generation or a generation after. Oh, okay, yeah, and yeah, because she. If I've talked to shift I've talked to Lee. I've talked a lot of them. Do you like there? There's so many dudes it like because I've seen the talk about another place where and I think it's a fairly I think it's a student. It's real that you know we start out with all these people you know what happens to everybody. But, you're I'm sure you're on facebook I'm not. A. Now. I can't stand I. Don't understand. It's too much going on facebook. Find out what happened. People sometimes I, mean sometimes they just call you. I was surprised you know. With this with my girlfriend passing how many people reached out to me? I heard from. Dan Vitality called me down. By Tally A. Yeah right and you think he's all right. You know and then out of nowhere Leno calls me. I'm very. It's a very beautiful thing that's happened in light of that. Our entire community reached out. I'm. Not GonNa lose I'm like. Yeah, like who the Fuck Am I. You know why, but everybody? It was crazy. Have that's me and you actually met? I always felt like I was like I represented something chaotic that you needed to avoid. That's probably true. We. Catch. You. I was at I. Mean I was there at the seller? The entire time you were shooting that documentary? Starting. Not Really I mean I started in started eighty nine. Ten Years Still Kinda. Star eighty-eight I started in eighty. Nice started doing I moved to New York eighty nine I was working Boston doing one night is but yeah. I was definitely around I never got into the celery, either by the way I didn't sit in their. Past me until she saw Hbo Half Hour. In Ninety, five, ninety five. But I was working at this hour by the time you were there and I don't think we ever met. Collin I knew all those. I know Joyner I know. You know I know everybody that was around you, but by the time you know I was around. You were Kinda out right well, finally, meet them. Yeah, it's nice to meet you, too. 'cause I always assumed Mike, 'CAUSE I. I know Papa I know all those guys. Yeah, you know and I remember when I was earlier doing when we started the podcast, I, I was talking to Papa in. I don't know where we were working. We both work in somewhere in different rooms and I'm like you tell Jerry wants to do it and we don't really do anything you were. It was just like you're like. Why would? I said did yes jerry. He goes. Yeah, I did he goes well what he said why. I appreciated the honesty of that. But. Yes, so that was. That's why we never met because you were. You were in another. You're another on another level, not really around much right? But when you think about that like all those guys because I don't know really how to. There's reasons why people don't make it. There's and there's there's definitely many reasons. Some of them are personal and some of them are just you know it's not crecy. Some of it's just timing. Some some people look better than others who the hell knows but you sort of have to balance the heartbreak of all that when you have all these people that you know that your friends at that struggle forever, and I guess that's What do you attribute that like when you look at your own success. Do you think it was inevitable, or do you think that there was a just work or do you think you know what I mean? I'll tell ya like the the seminal events the most seminal event. Yeah, my career to go to go back to what we were just talking about. Let's go back to catch a rising star nineteen seventy six. and. I see a guy. Get on the tonight. Show up! Right and he had about. You know and there's there was a period there where you kind of go like well. What's everyone else's take on this? I generally my envy used to follow around people who you know who had the freedom and the the sort of innate ability without even trying to be incredibly physically funny yeah Or do voices and things like you know a lot of my favorite comics to watch our magical or Maria or Even Kevin James. You know just sort of like you know. They just can't help either. You know they just have a freedom of storytelling in doing characters or they just can't help but be physically funny. You know. Were you know like here's how to think about trump. Here's my thing had to think about sex. Here's how to think about say race and sports. It's like i think of the work as sort of you know as interventions. I like that and i agree with you and i think that's why they probably resonates donates with me because i am a big fan of of great lines right yeah that that it is poetry and i am by avoiding the sort live <hes> contextual trap of being a poet right like capital p poet you know where where it's already sort of once removed moved from from cultural language in a way but you know freeing yourself to do this clashing and have bits and pieces that worked together in a poetic fashion. You know there's a little something some for everybody where you don't have to labor example like what the fuck is li- i like the way it feels when i say it but not but <hes> but like there was a guy that dan vitality to do this line about you know like being fucked up and he was like you know when you hit bottom folks. What kind of trajectory did your father's bi polarity. Send you on you know like how did that affect you. Know your creativity or your choices in life well. That's a big one. Obviously i mean i've written about it and part and trying to answer that in a way that is you know. My dad died at ninety nine nine and my mom died a while ago as well so i mean it's huge. I think my father's what we called panic depressive so for me. There's you know what's amazing. Though need indicted ninety nine yeah it was so he didn't kill himself. Nope up tried many times then failed many times he would drive to the golden gate bridge virtually monthly.
