But it's just a matter of having a star power from every generation. I mean, older football fans certainly remember Paul hornung, Notre-Dame, Heisman Trophy winner. Green Bay Packers, all these things. So I didn't see that hurt. I thought that days, well, they're trying to compare this to the Super Bowl. You know, get over it. God sakes. It's a ring. In a signifies success. That's all. And so that's kind of where we were on that deal. I thought that was really been picky, quite frankly. What was I Karen liked to work with? Fine. Always friendly. I don't know that Hank Aaron ever got the whole story of cowboys this scenario. But he was fine. He became many WCW appearances. Yeah, he liked wrestling. Yeah. Ironically, but I wish Aaron was a nice man. And it was cool for a baseball fan or a sports fan like me. To develop a relationship with it. So he was a good dude. He was a good deed in that regard. I think that he didn't get the entire story of cowboys, you know, alleged racism. He didn't do his homework, mister Aaron. Cowboy was, if you go back and look at his history, he was far from a racist. But to me, that is a may, that's a story that got out. That's how he was, he was imprinted and that's where it stayed. And again, sadly all right, let's get into the matches in their please get into the goddamn matches. There's really no heat and only one of them will be considered pretty decent. Our first one van hammer and Dan spivey be cactus Jack and Johnny B badd in 6 minutes and 51 seconds. They seem uncomfortable working together, which hurt the match, bad pulled off a hot move early with a frankensteiner, which wasn't referred to by any name into a DDT, finished so bad, hit the punch on his own partner. And Jack was schoolboy by hammer, half a star, cactus chat Guinea pinned by van hammer seems like a crime in retrospect, but how difficult is it for these guys to put together a match like this? Well, their styles were also different. The experience levels are varying, the wrong guy want. Mix it on the match. He had more potential that he was easy to get along with. I've always been a big dance 5 fan. Dan Dan, the left handed man. One of my favorite characters of all time, waylon mercy. That was Danny spivey. Did a great job as weyland mercy. So I would have probably put Mick over with unbiased regarding me because everybody knows. So because again, I sit in my ways, van hammer, nice kid. Good luck. Wasn't ready. And big Nick foley was not going to make him ready. Mistake on our part. You see, you know, you see some of these matches now in retrospect, and you say, man, if I just throw these names in, we should have a good match on our hands. This one, you just see those names and like you said, hammer, spivey, cactus Jack, Johnny be bad, like you said, out of the gate, we got a close style clash. We've got just things that are unavoidable. It just seemed like that was hard from the get go with those guys. Yeah, and probably not the kind of man she went over the show with. You don't open the show with something that's seems to be a little bit awkward. Or less action than you would ideally want. So again, I just thought that the decision to put the big green rookie babyface over was ill advised. Second match of the night, Dustin Rhodes and big fan Vader beat kensuke sasaki and barbarian in 6 minutes and 56 seconds barbarian was bad and I can't recall sasaki doing much, finished all barbarian accidentally closed on sasaki and with schoolboy by rose for the pan, the finished look familiar after the match Vader clothesline roads and left him laying JR was this just a lack of communication that the same finish really takes places in two matches in a row? Yeah, damn right it was. You got this big booking committee of all these wrestlers. What the fuck are you guys doing? Well, seriously. Pay attention. Just pay attention. You know, your name's on it. And I don't know the guy took ownership of things as they should, but your name's on this damn thing, man. So, yeah, that's unacceptable. And I just remember that match just being one that didn't have an overwhelming amount of effort. Guys are, you know, just not good. And it should have been better. It should have been better. "It was hungry. I think Christian really wanted to be a single star. And not necessarily his first preference. Suppose it to be a tag team star. Even though he would have done it, I needed done a great job with it. Let's talk about somebody else who would have done a great job with it. Of course we're talking about our old pal, mister orndorff. It's written in the observer that they're not exactly sure what he's going to be doing because some of the stuff has already leaked, meaning they thought maybe it was going to be him and Ron Simmons since they did the TV stuff, but the booking sheets have leaked, that it's going to be Dan spivey versus Ron Simmons. But more concerning is their own magazine, the WWE magazine has already told the story of Barry Windham turning on Dustin Rhodes. Those magazines hit the newsstands the day before it happens on live TV clash of the champions. Is this just a function of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing or are we getting too big for our britches, talk me through this? No, it's communication, lack of structure, you know, left hand, you hit the nail on the head, as simple as that. hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. And it ended up being a very embarrassing scenario. Because you're not talking about two ham and eggers. No. You're talking about major, major stars for us. You're tag teams. Yeah. Yeah, so how that slipped out like that or whatever. Is still a head shaker. Well, it's a head shaker when we see Bill watts on the 900 number. He's going to set the record straight and say, no, no, WCW's paying for guys medical expenses if they got injured on the job. We're just not paying them. But if they wanted to secure their income, they had to write my Lloyd's London policy if they wanted to protect themselves. And if they don't, well, that's on them. And Meltzer would say the Lloyd's premiums these days go for about $17,000 a year. And he suspects that that figure will rise rapidly over the next year. That's a lot of money now. Certainly a lot of money back then, especially based on the new watts pay structure, did you think it was quote unquote fair, but if a guy gets legitimately injured and he gets sent home, we're not paying him. No, that's fair. Yeah. You don't do that. But it was a strange, so many strange decisions were being made. Right. We've revealed so many strange decisions and things that didn't make any sense. This could have been done to fix that. You and I have not just simply sit down here today to identify problems. We have discussed solutions to those problems. And I will tell you that a lot of those solutions were discussed. You know, I still work in closer cowboy, whether I liked it or not. Because this is guilt by association. And the more he cowboy got on him, the more dripped down to me. And I didn't think that was fair. Nobody's

"And luckily, I believe that somewhere down the road, and this is not coming from Tony Kahn or anybody else. It's just logical to me. With all the ever building relationship with new Japan and AEW that somewhere down the road, we'll see okada in an AEW ring for a big show. Why wouldn't we? Right. And so I know at least that's my and that this may be fanboy and JR wanted to do some amateur booking. Because I really believe Ocado absolutely amazing. Absolutely amazing. And we got and the guys like Kenny and Adam Cole gets back and there's a dozen Moxley. I'm actually in Ocado I'm buying. CM Punk, I'm on in. I want to call that. I mean, I'll be there. So I just think that there was language issues, date issues, but if we could have ever gotten that plan in place where there was a systematic way of entering and exiting WCW by these outside talents would have been a lot better off. We didn't have a good plan. We were supposed to have barbarian team up with Dan spivey, but he had plans to go to Japan. So the story they tell on the show, ironic, we're just talking about that. Is the cactus Jack called spivey and told him to stay home. I'm bringing in Butch Reed, who knows more about Ron Simmons than any one. So it's going to be barbarian and Butch Reed, taken on Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham, and what a tag team they were. They go 8 minutes and 13 seconds, barbarian actually pins Windham after a foot to the face. Meltzer will take roads took one great bump after missing a shoulder tackle, Wyndham sold the finished great, but it was just okay, two stars. I could see how, you know, roads and Windham could tear it up, but maybe barbarian and Butch rate weren't the right opponents here, but you're definitely getting a flavor for what cowboy likes, right? I think so, but they weren't ready. They were ready for a big time event on TV. They had no story. They had no angle. It's cold. And when you're dealing with a cold product in a very even as cold overall product, in other words, we weren't setting the world on fire to start with. So you bring in two guys who are both good hands, you know, a lot of respect for those guys. But they didn't have any buildup, there was no anticipation built for this situation. And so another case of booking things before they were ready to go. And the fans reacted by silence. Next up, we've got Rick rude and Jake Roberts and big van Vader and the super invader, his Hercules Hernandez, taking on sting, the Steiner, and koloff in an elimination tag match, which goes 15 minutes and 15 seconds. This is a big time match, Rick invader are gonna work hotspots together and they're the highlight of the match according to Meltzer and he even says the highlight of the whole card, the first fall would see koloff pinned in 7 26 after Jake pinned him after he collided with rude. Staying with the pen invader in 36 seconds with a face buster for the second fall. The third fall is back to Vader and Rick Steiner and their trading power moves, and Rick tries to stand up with Vader on his shoulders, but 395 pounds of dead weight, staring at the bottom, made this a bad idea. At least he didn't tear out his lower back because with that much weight and it gets shaky, that's pretty dangerous according to Meltzer. Scott's going to get the cue to three minutes and 32 seconds for coming off the top, with a clothesline invader. That's a DQ and Bill watts WCW. And they attempt the road warrior finisher, but Rick couldn't get Vader up. So Rick is counted out in 55 seconds, and they give rude a neck breaker on the floor, which leaves sting against three. So rude and sting are both on the Vader comes off the top and accidentally splashes both men. So now Vader's d-q'd and staying in rude are left four dead, and the crowd starts chanting DDT, DDT, and Robert's drag route over to the corner, tagged in and gets the pin with the DDT in 46 seconds. Meltzer loved it called it the best match on the card and gave it three and a quarter stars. On paper, it looks odd, but a boy it worked and they were buying it that day, were they not? Yeah, maybe they're just ready for something. Because it sounds your description sounds a little herky jerky. Yes. And it didn't seem like there was any obvious attempts to build continuity, tell a story, because things kept happening, boom, boom boom. And maybe that's what maybe that's what that show needed. Because they had reacted this way yet. And there had been some pretty good talent in the ring, prior to this cluster. "Ron Simmons are one thing about it. You can't rest on his laurels, the rematch is already been signed with big fanbase. With the intensity in the WCW, nobody can rest on their laurels. But you're right, the champion or ex champion has a man. God damn it. That's going to be a war, because you got Harley race, and he will be focused, and he will be focused on Ron. So Meltzer goes on here. He said, these angles were kept pretty much of a secret while there were a few wrestlers that knew ahead of time that Simmons was winning the title, and many wrestlers who knew the title was changing in Baltimore, but some needed to believe it was sting that was going to get the belt and everyone knew something big was going to happen, although exactly what was a well kept secret and Baltimore supposedly neither Vader nor Simmons knew for sure about the title change until they got to the building that night. That's true. Most of the wrestlers were shocked backstage when Robert showed up doing the angle, even though it was generally assumed Roberts was the bad bob on the August booking sheets and there were some expectations that he would debut at center stage the previous Monday. Roberts wasn't backstage before the show began, and almost nobody even knew he was in the building or in town until he did the angle. So JR talked to us about why the importance of keeping the boys, I guess. Because they had the big mouse, Paul, they talk. They want to make themselves relevant by having more information than their neighbor. Hey, did you hear what's going on, brother, and brother and brother? It's ego. It's insecurities. And I love this guy's gang. When Dan's spider became waylon mercy, he gained a fan for life for me. I love that characterization in WWE at the time. Danny was just he's perfect in that role. Do you think though it came a little bit too late for him in his career after that hard bumping in Japan and of course? Yeah, he was beat up. You mentioned guys like Bret Hart, Ric Flair and Ted dibiase will be discussed, and these are all WWF guys. At JR, I mean, obviously trying to just drum up more hotline dollars and discuss it. I guess when gene came to work for WCW, Gina made a deal to run the hotline. And he also made a deal over here to get a piece. And other guys got paid. I never got the first check on the hotline. Never made a dime ever. And I had the hottest night Saturday, and it generated more revenue than anybody else, but I never got paid for it. I'm not complaining about this. I'm not going to. But it was just a whole different system. And gene came in and changed that. Of course, they had to do it to get him hired. Man, could you imagine a red ass JR hotline? How fun that would have been back in the day. Oh God, like you just spitting, spitting some red ass. You're on the show. People would have paid all kinds of money per minute to hear that. Look, we got the dragon sleeper, Dan spivey with the big win, but man, he had to look your right JR. The look, the charisma, the scary eyes, Danny's a good guy, too, boy. Overcome a lot as clean and sober. You know, he's married to Ann Russo, who was one of my assistants at WWE for so many years. They lived down here in Florida. I haven't seen Dan in a long time, but he's seems to be doing well healthy, but man, they always cause a temporary Dan Dan, the left hand man because he would knock your ass smooth out in a street fight that left hand. So he was he had a great reputation in that Tampa saint Pete area. Bad dude. I always liked Dan. Well, there we go, promoting the WCW fan club show now, but I wonder how that's going. Yeah. I think they're about to get their ass kicked, JR, because here comes the junkyard dog and mister Hughes. They were calling them big cat at the time. Yeah, mister Hughes, the big old Curtis Curtis Scott talked about Curtis's wrestling school that are based in Atlanta. At that point in time he just did his most athletic move of the night. His dance on the old dance on the apron? I don't know which ones to Chris Sullivan. Nobody does JR. I guess it doesn't matter. No. It does if you're James Sullivan's family, I guess. It does. "On that piece of business. So, but he was over, but I like this right. Vance wanted to see sting succeed. And him getting a nice rub, the house shows working the main events. As he's in tags, he takes the fall that kind of thing. Seemed to work to start working out decently. From the standpoint of disappointment and frustration, that's a personal thing with Steve Borden. He had to live with himself that this thing just didn't work. And they cruel irony of that is, it didn't work, but everybody knew that it should and could work. Yes. I should get all the pieces together, put it back into place and start a plan, if it takes us a year, but we have a destination that we're going to. We know on this day that this pay per view is staying is going to become the champion. And the smart money might have been you wanting to become the champion at the end of the day, against layer. Until then, or you're rebuilding staying with a succession of wins and getting him away from the horsemen, exclusively, flair could have been working with other people, helping other guys and making other guys feel like a star. But that might have been thinking too deeply. I'm not sure. Well, the first challenge here for flair is not going to be staying. It's going to be Scott Steiner and boy Scott still has. I like that. Yes. That sounds good, right? That sounds great. I mean, everybody knew Scott Steiner had all the tools to be a top guy. One of the most jacked up physically impressive guys on the roster, arguably had the hottest move in the whole business with frankensteiner. Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. But for whatever reason, the match didn't click, Scott has contended for all these years that he felt like flair sandbagged him, and a lot of people in the newsletters at the time said the same thing. And I know today's episode is about staying. Maybe that's a conversation for another day, but at clash of the champions, we see sting and Luger team up to take on doom and Dan spivey is going to interfere. And he's going to attack Luger before butcher E thrift sting over the top rope for the DQ. But somehow we wind up with Dan spivey and Lex Luger in a situation here. I don't know that that's what I would have picked for either one of those guys in hindsight. Me neither. Neither one were ready for that role. Like I said, Dan is 5 you never really found his creative home until you can't waylon mercy. When Dan's father came away to mercy, he became special. And he was booked half hazardly, skyscrapers, this partner, that partner, whatever, and Dan was always a reliable as hell. I think the business, the rest of business needed more dance 5 years in it, but the way that he was being booked was never going to get into the promised land. So yeah, I like dance work, but the way the mercy character I sit here on the show is one of my favorite personas that I work with as George the hell out of it. Those vignettes take produced on him. We're just I still think about them. They're very good. Really good. I want to mention this whole Luger sting thing becomes a bit of a thing as a tac team. Because we would see them take on Sid Vicious and stay enhancing at the Omni, and then take on flare and sit in both Philadelphia and Baltimore as a kid, I absolutely loved the pairing of Luger and sting. As someone on the inside of the business, what did you think of that? Was it too much of the good stuff? What we have gotten more mileage and building a card if we had these over baby faces in different situations or was there something wrestling fans always want new? Is this the way we get a new coat of paint on these guys putting them together? I think it rejuvenates both guys a little bit. It was great artwork for a poster for a graphic lex and staying their young and vibrant physiques. So there are a lot of positives to that situation. Without somebody starting already out there and real and JR land that, yeah, they work. Well, sometimes working is a extremely important, obviously. Hello. But it's not the only thing. If they were a great workers and they were obese lobs, then what do you got? Yeah. You got two pretty good workers at OB Slavs, not only to watch that. That's like watching ugly women. I just think that it's a visual business television business. And people ought to be pleased visually and Luger and staying for the kids out there and sting's face paint. They're big muscles or tans and all that. The women loved them. So I thought it was here's how to ask you this Conrad in response. Why not? Why not try it? Are we doing something better? Are we holding all something guaranteed to be better? No. Is this newer? Yes. Are you featured to your top earners? Absolutely. So why not? So let's also mention that even though maybe that title run wasn't what anyone hoped it was for staying, staying winds up being presented the pro wrestling illustrated award for wrestler of the year and inspirational wrestler of the year by Bill after, and I know people look at that sometimes and I say, oh, the PWI awards. But buddy, back in 91, that was a pretty cool deal. I mean, their distribution was major. And that meant that your top guy is going to be on the cover of that magazine. That's a great thing not only for sting, but the promotion, right? Yeah, good PR, good, merchandising, good marketing. A lot of wins there in those awards because they were looked at and like you said, entirely different than as they are now. I mean, every website has got an award award edition, it seems like. Yeah. You know, males have been doing his awards addition for probably 30 years. And a lot of people follow his lead in that world. So consequently, there's awards or I don't want to say a dime a dozen because that's disparaging, but you can get a little overkill on the rest of the year, all that stuff. And they don't understand what the criteria was to be to earn that distinction. But in any event, staying getting those two awards on a very challenging year for him is professional was very, very well timed..

They were just likeable guys and just full of energy and to be in the rain with those guys without really having you know a long conversation with them we would see each other.
