"Dot com twitter handle at. Dp show i think we came up with a poll question correct mclovin. We did which one era. I have another one. More before sean. Okay if you could buy a ticket or have a ticket to one game the opener cowboys at box or the week. Four bucks at at patriots. Now you're neutral fan. You're not a patriots fan. Which game is the musco to game. If i'm a neutral fan neutral fan yeah. You're not a patriots fan. You're not a tom. Brady fan i would go to the cowboys buccaneers really. Yeah yeah i would season opener. Cowboys always interesting. And i mean the one with brady and new england is is personal certainly for new england fans. But if you're not a patriots fan. Or buccaneers fan than i would think the cowboys might be a little more interesting. For you yes boeing. I wonder if you offer a boston. Sports fan tickets to the patriots hosting tom. Brady this season or a plane trip to the super bowl. I think that'd be a decision because well know who's in the super bowl and you patriots aren't so we're not even the we don't even know what's happening in the super were. The patriots aren't in. Because they're not that i would rather take the game against brady. Let's bring dan. Shaughnessy boston globe sports columnist. How big a deal is this with this regular season matchup brady come to town well dan. That's a bigger deal than your mates. You're going to the cowboys opener. If you're neutral at let's say. I'm not a patriot fan or brady fan. That's the season opener pomp and circumstance. You got you. you've got concerts. You've got all kinds of things. I hear that and again. I don't consider myself particularly provincial. But this thing there's so much pay those here so much history build up as you say it's personal. It's epic i mean you got. There's going to be arguments for both of these to be the greatest ever what they did and they were together twenty years. They went to nine super bowls. They won six of. I mean yeah the notion of him coming in there after winning the super bowl after leaving hard feelings. In foxborough bob kraft. They're schmoozing on the sideline and all the anger. The anger we have here in new england patriot. Fans it'll be a rare night. Though dan they'll be chair no matter what because they they love the patriots and they love brady. So there's going to be a lot of cherry every time either one scores but we wondered yesterday if before the game brady gets it out of the way in acknowledges bill or vice versa. Because you know. Robert kraft is going to be on the sidelines. Hugging tom but kissing. Okay but what happens with radian. Bella check either before or after the game.

I think they're they're saying look. We can get out of this if we have to with a couple of these games. The big ticket item though the biggest game regular season game in patriots. History is going to be with tom. Brady coming to town. Prices are crazy. You've got tom. Brady's dad calling the hotline of a boston radio station. Play you some of that like he's trash talking. "Linked with the 1980 16 has died with a story. McNamara was 88 years old. He died with his family by his side in Tennessee. He was at the helm for the Red Sox in one of the most infamous moments in baseball history, Dan Shaughnessy in today's Boston Globe, saying He has already heard from John McNamara's wife, Ellen, who told him Game six is always going to be hanging over him. Game six of the 1986 World Series where the Red Sox spiraled and lost. Many believe it all started when Roger Clemens was pulled from the game when the Red Sox were leading in the eighth. McNamara claiming Clemens wanted to be taken out. Clemens to this day denies it. Ellen McNamara going on to tell Dan Shaughnessy I just want to say one thing. "You can't see over them and you create windows, and that's what the saints do, and that's what drew Brees does. But no, we, I'm mocking everybody. When I talk about how short jubilees is I don't care. Russell Wilson? I don't care how tall you are. Baker Mayfield I didn't care how tall he was. It's how accurate are you a leader? Do you love the big moments? Do you wanna be great. It's like Johnny Menzel. You know, we love Johnny Manziel at no point. Did somebody say, you know the problem with Johnny Manziel site? No, it was everything else wasn't that. Partying. That was the problem, but Baker Mayfield I, you know, I couldn't care less toll us or isn't. Can you play the position? You know, Patrick Mahomes. It was going to be a defensive ACA Texas. RG three defensive back, Texas, Johnny, Manziel defensive back in Texas. Man, those defensive backs must be hell of quarterback there, Texas. I'm guessing imagine if Texas ended up changing the the, the history of college football. If you had these guys playing defensive back. Oh, man. Yup. I remember when Bo Jackson told you the story about being recruited by amp, Alabama and linebacker. They said they didn't have a lot of room in the backfield. Would he be open to switching a linebacker. Hello, Auburn, although I could have seen both because you magin bows linebacker. Oh, boy. Imagine him. He. He could have been Ray Lewis with more speed more Atlanticism God how scary, scary anyway. But imagine if you had Bo Jackson their plane, middle linebacker or even outside linebacker, would it be like Lawrence Taylor because he's more athletic than Lawrence Taylor. That'd be fun. I've been fun. I wonder if his career would have been extended if he played defense instead of offense, you know he had that injury where you know that leg was pulled out of the socket there. All right. We'll take a break. Dan Shaughnessy was there at Yankee Stadium last night, Red Sox roughed up the Yang sixteen to one and a little bit of drama pre-game with Luis Severino getting there to the ballpark apparently late. So we'll talk to Shaughnessy from the Boston Globe right after this in the Dan Patrick show, if you're a loved one get.

"Here's your five minute. Poll question. Would you rather know the truth about Malcolm Butler being benched in the Super Bowl, why Jimmy Garoppolo was traded deflate gate or other with the patriots. I guess that would be spying on the Super Bowl with the Rams their walk through. There's a few of them in here, but let me see Butler benching Garoppolo trade deflate gate. Probably going to go Garoppolo because is Brady involved in this. How involved is he in this be owner involved in this? The owner Trump the coach in this. The Brady talked to crab. So if I could get all the answers to all of this, I sort of feel like I know what happened with Deflategate Butler. I am curious. Because I do think that that cost the patriots, a Super Bowl, and Dan Shaughnessy brings out, you know, one of those amazing stats. Imagine if you said to a team, you're not going to have to punt in the Super Bowl. Brady's gonna throw for over five hundred yards. You got one of the best defense in minded coaches in the history of the NFL. On your sideline. You got a great defensive coordinator, you're gonna lose the game. Not possible really when you think about it, it's it's not possible, but I, I would want to know the Garoppolo trade details, the Butler benching you know if he got into a fight with Bela checks, son, or there was something else at the hotel room or whatever it might be. Okay. Once you get that answer, it feels like there's a lot of layers here with the Garoppolo trae. Yes. Phone, I think I'd like to know Butler because of its disciplinary. It's really tough to discipline. Someone at the hindrance of your own team at the biggest game of the year doesn't send them belch. It doesn't seem like that kind of guy you'd seen like he'd wanna win. I over discipline. But the fact that nobody has said anything is really interesting. And I've said this before about ballot check. I don't know him, but I do respect the fact that he doesn't wanna talk about it and he doesn't want to say anything about Malcolm Butler. I guess he could slander him. He can have some things to save Malcolm Butler, but he's chosen not to say anything at all. Yeah, see the. You have to wonder that if Malcolm Butler messed up. By. I mean, what else could it be? Oh, yeah, he had to do something. We just don't know what it is. I don't think it's it's his play. I don't think all of a sudden Bella check goes, you know on second thought you haven't been playing that. Well, he played ninety eight percent of the snaps during the regular season. You're facing the eagles their torching you. If you wanna make a point, you suspending for the first half and then you bring him back in the second half and maybe you get a stop, maybe win a Super Bowl because of that. Yeah, it does give the appearance of it being so we agreed. Yes. Where Bill Belichick maybe doesn't want to embarrass one of his former players and Butler for him not to talk, you know, he did. He do something really that bad where he himself was too embarrassed to to share why he thinks he got. He may not want to talk about it because it's not gonna reflect well on him. But I, I am curious. I'd love to know what Tom Brady thought of this. What Dan at any point do you say to Bella check like at halftime coach. What's the deal here? I mean, we're not stopping anybody. I, I mean, I'm gonna have to throw for five hundred yards. Mean punish him in the off season, like just telling me what's going on here. We're going to play the players that are on field. That's it. Coach, could you speak up? It's really loud in the locker room or going to play the players on the field. Okay. All right. Coach all to throw for five hundred yards here..

"So unless Brady somehow gets hurt something unexpected happens. They will get what they wanna get. And really, all this stuff is real is it is doesn't really matter for them getting to the final four. So what was the sense in the room after you had your four follow up swings of the bat? Dad was a sense. You You know, know, I mean. I mean everybody down there is sort of beaten down there. They're so used to it. I understand that. So you know, they just they just beat it audio and and no one really tries or is just there's no, there's no no gain in pushing these these sorta narratives, and he's good at it. And when you win, you get to do that. You know, when you're getting kicked around in Cleveland, you don't get to do that. You talk to twenty years ago. So if you win, then you can be that guy and have control the room and and not be challenged on anything. So I guess where does he rank for people that you've interviewed press conferences all time in the history of sports, which I choose not to play the game most of the time. I mean, we're like the same age and I've been through a lot. He's I respect him. I think he's one of the greatest coaches who ever lived and I would love to drive cross country with him. I think he's fascinating character, but he is not going to give it up these. Gonna issue, one more piece of information other than what is Courtney ended. And if you ask him if today's Wednesday, he'll he'll just tell you that's traditionally the day that follows Tuesday, but he's not going to give in. And I understand that and I don't. I don't harbor any bad feelings. This is the dynamic and and I've learned to live with it. I just choose not to engage most of the time. But I thought today I say back five and a half months. That game I've been asked about it every day of my life since then. And you know, I'm a sports guy. He's a sports guy, just thought, okay, let's just try this one more time I'd like to do. Did you purposely use the do your job line? I mean, that's absolutely you know, you gotta come. You gotta come to these things. You know, and that's the truth. And that's what our job is, and we can't lose sight of the fact as much as pokes may not like it. But in this case, I will say this is really the first time it's been pushed back from the fan base on really anything he's done. You know, they had a fourth and to the punt and different things, but but this is the one that has stuck because they're a fancier who really think that it cost him the Super Bowl, and I'm not gonna go that far, but it was pretty, you know, contested game. I mean they lost Super Bowl, gaining six hundred thirteen yards. The quarterback like five hundred five, never punting and they lost the game almost impossible. Well, and in the last one for you asked the poll question Dan, because he's interesting that you say Dan, that this is the most shaken the in Bill we trust foundation has ever been shaken. It really was about a minute from being shaken at the the Super Bowl that Malcolm Butler made the intercept without an interception. Everyone ask him, why didn't. Bill call timeout a time, wasn't there a time out? Yes. So asked the the, the dodged or they were still brilliant in such a great read across the field of the nurse guy over there that they, they were genius again as the Polk, whereas. So Dan, what's the most shocking? Super Bowl, coaching move Seahawks throwing on the goal line there or Bill benching Butler. No pekao retire. The trophy with the ultimate act of stupidity, they said Pete, you just won the Super Bowl. He said, I don't think so. I'm gonna try slammed pass over the middle instead. Yeah, and it's the isn't amazing. Malcolm Butler is involved in both. I know it's like it's like kinda of these Dan, thanks for the call. Very interesting, press conference today as always. Thanks, take care. Thanks. You Dan Shaughnessy the Boston Globe. That would have been the com- we were sitting there watching that Super Bowl me sues our friend, Jill, our kids, and while our kids were hopped up on Eminem's and..

"Only use the do your job line that Bella check is known for to inoculate himself from getting the usual wrote. We've moved onto Cincinnati answer from Bella check, but he fires off not one, not two, not three, but I believe a record for Bill bell check, press conference. Four follow up questions in case you missed it. Here it is in all its splendor. All of this year. And I wouldn't be doing my job. I didn't ask about last year last year last year. I'm not focused on last. What about the fact that everywhere we go, folks want to ask about bother sports coaches, players, university, your sports fan, thought about that that's model months ago. Is it going to be any more explanation about why didn't play. Focused on training camp. Any differently. Training for started work on that right now, we'll do the best we can and visit Matt. You can't. The fans wanna know more about this. From focused on doing the best that I can't for the two thousand eighteen New England, Patriots. That's not job. That's what I'm gonna do. That's what I always done in fast every day. Coach here done the best that I could this football team all continue to do that. And right now my focus on the two thousand eighteen season not two thousand seventeen thousand fourteen thousand seven thousand four, two thousand and one not two thousand not focused on any of those seasons. They're done. This season's team is important to address thing with your team. It's important for Mehta, good season. Two thousand eighteen. I'm do everything I can't do that. Do the best that I can for football team as my job. And that's my responsibility. Let's try to do. Hopefully you can respect that. Maybe not. Here we go. Dan Shaughnessy joining us here on the rich Eisen show. How are you? Dan Goodrich are you? I'm fine. Would now does that suffice for your cardio for the day to Dan? Does that. Like like fifty rounds Tyson, just a minute and thirty five seconds. You know, it's like you gotta be ready and I respect Bill and and I, I appreciate that he, he let it go back and forth a little bit. It was sort of the expected outcome. I guess you could say. I think it's important to try to get it on record. Well, I mean, he didn't really, I guess, answer it the question, but you did at the at the end, ask the million dollar question is how will how might it manifest itself in that locker room? Are you hearing that there are some people in that locker room who are still suiting up for the patriots were questioning to this day? What in the world happened? Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl. Well, there's been stuff, you know. I mean, everybody's been running at the players for five and a half months now, and there's been guys saying, yeah, we wish we knew and and you know, back and forth Brady was very cryptic about it. One of his paid gigs, Jim gray, where where he just said, yeah, I wish he'd played and which we knew. Kind of thing. So yeah, I think that you know, that's why, when when Bill, you know, of course, the great dodges to say on just talking about this year. So I try to say, well, it's part of this year, or do you plan to address this with the people in the room about this year because this is the first one, rich and like nineteen years with as been some serious pushback from the devoted fan base. The Bill, we trust people that has been shaken a little bit because of this decision. I mean, he dressed the guy they got gashed there was arm tackling going on when they couldn't. You know, even at his worst, Malcolm Butler can tackle everybody knows that..

"A really a blessing to be able to do all that but the patriots you know they were clown show in the first thirty forty years of their existence and and now it's the opposite other a brand like the cowboys and the packers were and that kind of thing so that has flipped entirely the red sox thing you know and you can talk to our friends in chicago it it changes when they win i mean eighty six years you don't win and you win they're not as interesting as they were they're not and the cubs aren't either it's nobody's fault and you wanna win that's good but the whole uh dynamic changes once with you you're in the desert for eighty six years or a hundred four years of the cub thing was and and it just changes when the team wins in and the fans become different dan shaughnessy to commisson boss kinda reminds me um uh not to get to highbrow here but you know in in the maltese falcon greek daschle hamid uh detect a story you know there's there's that little uh there's a little story within his story to sleep krasts parable and in this that seamus passage were hammett writes um about uh about the crowd he just didn't cells to beams falling and then no more of them fell and he had to adjust himself to them not falling it seems to me that's what it's like to be a boston sports writer boston sports faith in uh in this day and age and i love the so true in and you know our group halvard ryan who was of course a great friend of your dad's and works along with him and in europe bob has has seen it but bob the one thing bob is now going for him that i had was bob grew up in trim so what the hell can he though the jersey guys who can hobbling now he's only been here for fifty years so we can't buy hillock like started on the same day with peter yemen's at the boston globe i believe 1968 sameday bobby kennedy was shot sits reading story oh i didn't realize it was data mike add we're speaking with degrade this from the boston globe dan shaughnessy who's been added now for forty five years which is amazing here's your only like 52 um uh you when you write that.

"Chris as it is now you didn't have you know salary tops since and some of the restrictions and and the the designs toward parody you have now so uh i saw both sides of it as a as a child growing up as a sports fan but to see this in the nfl in this time is extraordinary and like you say they are not the uh uh giants of of cooperation and and revealing themselves so it's a it's a it's like covering the pentagon you just don't get much dan dan shaughnessy these sports columnist from the boston globe and beyond the patriots you know it's been a remarkable uh eighteen nineteen years just to cover sports in boston and of course the celtics had um they're great run in the in the '60s in than there uh excellent run in the 1980s but um too large extent when people thought about the patriots any way they thought the red sox they thought about failure and it's really been largely the opposite now for a full generation what is it like wrapping your head around a success yeah i think that's a good pray framework for germany's that a generation which is that there are people now in college it and grad school who you're grew up and they know nothing but perutz it's who's on and on a temporary in this century then i was at every one of them it's like nine different cities said only two in boston the other eight were on the road.

"A paper of rockstars' the big rockstars' in the paper the sports writers there are a you know well mcdonough attack an mollin bob ryan dan shaughnessy and so on me are all more heavyweight boston sports was bad but the sports reading was great it was just loud and chaotic and heartbreaking and those are all just unbelievably great things to have happened actually when a go back home my mom is still back in boston i don't recognize the town anymore you know these kids who have like tendinitis from waving their arms at so many championship parades i don't even recognize that whole world i mean to me boston sports was about you know using your heart cut out and stomped on so but anyway it was really really a fertile environment to be a sports fan and especially a someone who like newspapers now is one of those weirdos who like this was delivered it i read it in the morning this is a true thing peter my father who has a science teacher actually got to the point where he's frustrated by my over obsession with sports and so in the morning when the paper would come he would yank out the sports page and put it over the fridge where i couldn't reach it and denied me the ability to look at into had brad like the metro region section in the business and so on so in the great tradition of becoming what your parents specifically what your parents don't want you to become that's how i think i look at i now in this business yeah exactly late didn't you could wisconsin i did i want to wisconsin i know it's greater right but they weren't really.

"Four multiple assets that would have helped you this year and down the line come on out yet use with a birdie has the ac's in this year what do you do with garoppolo next year if well you franchise him and then you trade of odd but i i think you you will certainly find trade partners but i don't think that you'll get as much back in return because garoppolo this year makes minimal money i don't know to salary is but it's not big that was part of the carrot you could get jimmy garoppolo for one year and a low number you could work with them figure out if he works in your system and then franchise him yourself or sign him to a longterm deal the patriots elect to hold onto him as protection but it's protection for the longterm it's not protection for the shortterm yellow or 2017 garoppolo is making a base salary of eight hundred and twenty thousand dollars okay peanuts peanuts especially for a guy that could be a starting quarterback this is jimmy garoppolo is last year in knowing you can't bring to quarterbacks back at that highest salary and the patriots for their sake longterm vet hoped that trade off route there for garoppolo is close to what you were getting uh you could have received this past march or april our eight seven seven three d p shows the phone number email address dpm patrick dot com as a magic dan shaughnessy boston globe he's gonna join the program later on this hour mike freeman is terrific job company nfl for bleach report bill joined the show later as well as sam aiming covers the nba for usa today he's going to join the show alito get into the tie re irving trade proposals i've got the one team.
